Title: What Are You Listening To II: Whole Lotta Music
Post by: Avaitor on July 06, 2013, 03:05:35 PM
Here we go! New thread, more music for us all to share.

As of now I am listening to "Evil Thrill" by Marty Friedman. This is from his first solo album, done between Cacophony and his stint in Megadeth. He even gets Becker over on a few of his tracks, like this one.

It is a really good song. I get pissed off with certain radio stations that'll sometimes play the cheap radio edit of it. The length of the song is no excuse - it must be all or nothing. =)

God, I hate Rob Zombie. ;D But I'm finding myself listening to him now. "Let It All Bleed Out"

WOW. How have I never seen this show before? The song selection is great, too. It's hard to believe that Geoff is here, at his prime and cracking jokes with the audience. It's a shame that this couldn't last.

Black Water Rising- "Blessed"

I heard of these guys while having Music Choice on, and saw that they named themselves after a line from a Clutch song. I dug their style already, but this was the bit that sealed the deal in. Very Clutchy, with some Maiden added in as well. A good mixture!

Back to the 90's... AGAIN!

As usual, I was able to come up with a list of bands/artists I neglected the first time. And the 2nd time. So, I'm brushing up on the following:

Digital Underground
Chris Rock
Porno for Pyros
Jane's Addiction
Jennifer Lopez
Usher
Rahzel
De La Soul
Kula Shaker
Cyndi Lauper
Eminem
Kelis
George Michael
Suzanne Vega
Imogen Heap
Vitamin C
Goo Goo Dolls (pre-"Iris" which I fucking hate more than hate can hate)
Smashing Pumpkins (pre-Siamese Dream, which I know as well as anyone who's owned the album for 16 years)
Radiohead
Counting Crows

and some soundtracks
Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare
The Rugrats Movie
Mallrats
Empire Records
The Doom Generation
Nowhere
Splendor

and whatever else I note later

I got into this because of Maison du Malheur's cover of the song, which was played in the latest Heineken commercial with the guy and his goat running through the streets of India, but Maison du Malheur has yet to release a single of their version, so I bought an mp3 of Desireless' original after listening to it in its' entirety.

This has always been the one Di'Anno-era song that was tailor-made for his voice, and not so much Bruce's. But the music is SO GOOD that I'm just glad to see them pull it out again this tour.

I've now heard a second song by Robin Thicke. And just like Blurred Lines, he makes sure to mention that his dick is huuuuge. Is this supposed to be a running joke, or is he really just that cocky  about himself? Dude comes off like the biggest fucking tool.

I have access to whatever Mrtzcmp3 and Mp3Skull have on "wax" (though I had to do a little Foreign Shopping to get my hands on Salt-N-Pepa's "Giddy Up"... that one's quite the slippery sucker). I only bothered with the singles and they only released 2 ("Sugar" and "Spiders") before 2000, which naturally is my cut-off year.   ;D

I'm currently in the H-I-J area. James - who I can't believe I've never heard until this week, Ini Kamoze, Ja Rule, Jade, Jane's Addiction, Hanson, Imogen Heap, Jay-Z, Janet Jackson, Imani Coppola (and one of my favorite albums, Chupacabra- and I can't find a Google Image for her "It's All About Me, Me, and Me"; which Wiki informs me was a single) and Hole. Who will be making my list quite a few times- they have an impressive pre-Live Through This catalog. Which I've known since I was a huge fan of theirs as a teen, but I wasn't aware "Dicknail" was a single (though that won't be making the list, not with so much more to choose from).

"Old Age" is playing right now - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYsNB4_yt-M . Should have been a single! Instead, it's "Violet"s B-side. I should cheat and put it on the list anyway but... I've already literally cooked up / doctored a few cover pics for songs Wiki told me were singles. I have to have "Navy Bean" on my list: https://myspace.com/tracybonham/music/song/navy-bean-68382-77345 . So, I'm just blaming this on Wiki.

Avenged Sevenfold- "Requiem"

Since I'm seeing the Ghost show where they're opening for A7X, I figured that I should check out their new album. It's definitely taking more cues from Sabbath and Maiden, which is a good thing, but it's still not beyond okay.

Well they deliberately went for an old-school vibe here, so that's probably what alienated a lot of fans.

Which is funny, because their most popular (and best, IMO) album, City of Evil, is almost straight Maiden-fappage.

The 90's list is on the backburner (again). But now I'm digging around in the old Horror Soundtrack vaults.

Currently, I'm playing "Paura e Liberazione" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AtlzJuuv-E) from City of the Living Dead. Not a movie I heartily recommend by any means, House by the Cemetery is a lot more outrageous, fun, and entertainingly bizarre. Unless you've never seen an Italian splatter flick before. In which case, the intestine vomiting scene is at least a moment you really should see. This track is, uh... really beautiful. Somehow it was displaced onto this soundtrack because one listen instantly throws you into The Beyond, Lucio Fulci's superior in places (but not quite as a whole) followup to City.

Where I go from here... I might wind up in Nightmare on Elm Street 4-5-6 territory soon (I can't wait to hear those tracks!!!), The Beyond is inevitable, as is From Beyond, then maybe The Church if there was ever a proper soundtrack released (and if there's one for Burnt Offerings, I can't imagine there wasn't one for this).

Oh man, no one told me The Constellations released a new album last year. I must have listened to Southern Gothic at least once per week since 2011.

Starting off with the excellent Black Cat (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4iRQW2QF4A), this record is already my jam.

Seriously, do it. This is some of the best music I've heard in a long time.

I'm actually not a big fan of this one. There are more clever songs on the album, and it doesn't have the weight of "Heart Attack". But she nails it live.

Yeah, I like the album. Funny enough, they recorded Safe And Sound in 2011 and while it was in constant rotation on Sirius, it and a bunch of other indie songs by newer bands started showing up on mainstream radio en mass about a year ago. I think by the time they recorded the rest of the album their sound had changed a bit. At least, the rest of the album sounds like it was recorded separate from that single.

They're on tour with Amon Amarth and Enslaved, and the tour is supposed to come to the House of Blues here. Sadly, that HOB is at Disney, and Skeletonwitch are the latest casualty in their recent embargo on metal acts. I don't really get what makes them so much more obscene than the other 2 in Disney's eyes, but them's the breaks. I might still do that show though.

(As of about 11pm:)
Organizing the core 500-800 middle of my Top 999 Singles of the 1990's list.

(As of about 12:45am:)
Decided the 300-500 section needed some restructuring.

(Somewhere around 1:30am:)
Running up the 110-200's. Definitely needed some work.

And, right now, L7 is playing.

I'm finally listening to Sunbather. This is an album that's been getting a lot of love from outside of the black metal community, even obtaining praise from hipster-prone sites like Pitchfork and AV Club's Music section. I certainly know of some people who dig it but you'd never catch at a Gorgoroth show. And... it ain't bad. I wouldn't say that this is the best black metal has to offer, but this is a fine entry-level release and nothing sounds off. I'm glad it exists, even if it probably won't make my personal list.

Going over that impossibly challenging 999 list again. It is taking so long, so much work is required comparing each track to one another to make them fit to position into a list like this. Now that I keep going through each set of 500, 600, 700- I wonder how I ever mixed them up in the first place. Somehow they all scattered in generally the right place I thought they belonged. Then I go through them deciding one Busta Rhymes is an 800 rather than a 600, one La Bouche needs to be booted altogether and replaced by Sarah McLachlan, Dismemberment Plan is good enough for the 200 rather than somewhere between the two Black Sheep's. So much relistening involved. And 999 songs? When I SELECT+ALL the tracks, the program tells me the total time of the songs together is: "3.0 Days." Days- that is a bit crazy. Just a tad. But... I swear I feel like I'm getting close. 700-999 is pretty much set. I'm just figuring out the 500-699 right now.

Anyway, Ace of Base just morphed into Aphex Twin... a rather dramatic mood shifter. And when I was thinking about what song to replace "Sweet Dreams" with, I was considering Shampoo's "Girl Power." I freaking love that song- I know it's awful, but I love it to death. Bask in its guilty pleasure...ness: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_S5aMe9atw

FINALLY done with the ordering and pic-snatching on my Top 999 Singles of the 1990's list. Actually, I was done Tuesday afternoon. Just need the ambition to start doing the linking and all that. Wanted to share a couple of insights in my Year of Labor on this project:

A good contender for Most Pointless Song of the 1990's is 702's "No Doubt." Also the title of the album it's from. Almost 70% of the song is the chorus repeating. You should hear it, it's incredible...y annoying. You really do start thinking they're finished...but then they do it again. And again. And again. And it's a terrible chorus too. Gotta get down, to what it's all about, see I want you, and that's no doubt. Repeat for 2.5 minutes of a 4:20 song (exactly 4:20, no jokes or I'll roast you- try me).

And... by the way, worst song of the decade, hands down, is thus: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5giWfpANMac I was literally disgusted when I clicked off of it (early in the summer), but forced myself to listen to the entire thing. I don't know how, I reached my peak point of outrage several times.

Zooming at the Zoo - "Go to Hell"

The song playing at the dance club when pre-teen Asia Argento actually expressed a desire to go back into the demonic church where everyone was dying. In the 1989 film, The Church. No, she decided dancing with her friends was the pits and the hip thing to do was to go to an evil church where her father jackhammered himself to death a few hours earlier.

I think that's THE question of the past three+ decades. I honestly don't try to answer such a question for fear of a brain aneurysm or three. Everything about ABBA was such pure cheese. The single from the solo album "I Know There's Something Going On" by Frida might be one of the very few works which has earned my respect. Very powerful sounding 80s track. Strong vocals, strong guitar, strong drums. I listen to it just for Phil Collins' drum work on it.. it's gorgeous.

I can't claim to be an expert on their discography or anything but... I like them. Of course, there are few artists / groups I literally sit down with for longer than 20 or so minutes at a time (Rihanna is a frequent exception) (unless we're talking just repeating the same song over and over again), so perhaps every album they ever waxed was just that. An instant relic. But most of their famed material seems to live on and be protected under the Cult Hit banner. And that is more than fine with me. I think "Mamma Mia" is fantastic, "Honey Honey" is heady and entirely solid as fuzzy dancefloor material, "Dancing Queen" might be one of the greatest pop music contradictions every created- it sort of single-handedly gave birth to its very own Gremlins. If you've never seen the original Prom Night, they used disco as a kind of Beat of the Grim Reaper theme throughout. But DQ is even better at feeling like the kind of song that would play, in one form or another, if ever there were a Prom Queen hanging / beheading or remembrance ceremony in a soapy TV-movie about Sarah Michelle Gellar dying in a crunchy car crash. And, to these senses, "SOS" is untouchable. Inarguably perfect. If you don't like it- You don't like it. That simple.

Also, they were an important theme in the film Muriel's Wedding.

I'm currently trying to get into Army of Lovers, but they lost me quickly after the one song I already liked from Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead.

Tina's always a good choice.

Black Sabbath- "Changes"

In terms of overall songwriting, this isn't very good at all. The lyrics are wishy-washy, the piano's bland, and Ozzy's voice just isn't suited for softer songs. But the novelty of Sabbath doing a piano ballad? I think that alone makes the song the fascinating curio that it is.

It's a very strange (demented) mid-aughts rollerskating-type jam. Schoolgirly, bitchy, gum-snappy, self-absorbed, but... probably the most fun thing she's ever done. I was not a fan of her baggy-pants ballads. The ones she got famous for. "I'm with You" and "Complicated." (Half-ballad, half what was left of late 90's grindy guitars.)

Now I'm checking out Peaches' 1995 debut album, Fancypants Hoodlum, under her real name, Merrill Nisker (mrtzcmp3.net has the whole thing)... I literally just found out she had an album in 1995, so... Wish I could describe the style. I've heard it before. It's very emulating the style of another band. But, unfortunately, I just never listened to them much. I want to say... Primus. Only a lot more ghetto. Especially "I Want Something." I am loving her rendition of "Kung Fu Fighting" though.

Tony Iommi- "I Go Insane"

Little history fact: In the mid-80's, Iommi disbanded Black Sabbath and worked on his first solo album, with Glenn Hughes as the lead singer. He got it all made, named it Seventh Star, and was just about to release it, until Warner got cold feet about him going solo, and begged him to title it as a Sabbath album and go on tour under the name. He relented, and that's how that album fit into the canon. Almost 20 years later, Iommi finally got to make his own dang solo album, even featuring Hughes on vocals. Isn't it nice how things work out?

Saw them in concert before they were big back around 2002, the local radio station gave away tickets to shows by bands that were unknown at the time(I saw bands like Chevelle, Story of the Year, and Hawthorne Heights this way as well before they broke out).  I honestly haven't listened to their music in several years, but I don't really dislike them, that's about as positive as I can say.

My sister had their first CD and I basically usurped it from her. Most of the songs on there sounded the same, "My Immortal" aside, but I really did like a couple of tracks.

I don't know where it is and I haven't been keeping up with them, but I always leave the station on when "Bring Me to Life" comes on.

The first half of the debut is excellent (the second half isn't anywhere near as memorable), the second album is uninspired garbage, and the third album is inbetween the first two in terms of quality. It sure as shit is a lot more listenable than the second one.

If you like them, talon, check out the one album by We Are The Fallen, it consists of the Evanescence members who left after the first album (including the guy who wrote most of the first album's hits), and some chick who was on American Idol. I don't think it's quite as good as the Evanescence debut, but I like it more than their second and third.

What I hear happened is that the singer (Amy something or other?) got a bit of an ego after the first album, the guy who was essentially writing everything left because of it, and it really showed on the second album because everything Amy wrote for it was mediocre. Could be wrong though.

It's okay overall... the stuff is more atmospheric than anything. Their peak albums are still "Clarity" and "Bleed American" (or "Jimmy Eat World" depending if it was a post-9/11 version or not) which still hold up really well.

I'm really surprised either aren't as regarded as they should be. Alternative rock fans used to be all over those albums.

I'm not actually sure if you'd like them. They're a bit on the lighter/poppier end of the spectrum. The closest band I can relate them to is Weezer, but their songs aren't quite as tight as JEW's (that is weird) are. I was more speaking in a general sense, though that might because their last few albums haven't been anything amazing.

If you were to give one a chance first, I would go with Clarity.

Checking out some 90's Apollo 440. If you never heard of them, they're the band that did that poppy techno song "Ya can't stop the rock- don't stop the rock" that you heard on tv in the background on shows like Daria. This was the days of stuff like Moby's "Bodyrock," Fatboy Slim's "Praise You," and that "Start the Commotion" song from Zoolander, so the definition of techno changed quite a bit to being like Tarantino-esque genre mixes (faster than Beck, liTer than Cornelius). I don't mind saying that wasn't my favorite time in electronic music. Their earlier to mid 90's stuff is pretty interesting. Shy of their cover version of "Don't Fear the Reaper." Their sound began lightening up around '96 to get as pop as "Stop the Rock". Before that, they were heavier than Fluke. A great surprise to me. Anyway, since I'm not the biggest fan of "Rock," I think I can say that their change of sound was a mistake. Right now, I'm playing "Heart Go Boom" and it's flat-out awful.

Okay... for whatever reason, I keep clicking Play on tracks on Robin Thicke's 2013 album (I hadn't heard anything but "Blurred Lines" and GI2U)... HOLY HELL! I've only found 1 so far that I didn't like (the single he decided should follow "Blurred Lines" directly, "For the Rest of My Life" - bad choice). "Take It Easy on Me" should have been a single. I also adore "Ain't No Hat 4 That."

The only good thing to come out of blurred lines was that redhead. Sweet merciful shit.  :swoon:

When I listen to people slag that song, I mostly hear how different Grace Slick and the band's style used to be from this point in their careers. I don't hear a lot of solid criticism on the song itself. Just: it's lousy.

Which I get how people can think it is. But I've heard worse. Quite a bit worse.

Because it's pure, unadulterated, grade-A cheese.  It's not bad by any means, it's just so darn cheesy, it couldn't be more 80's if it tried.

Most of S.A.W.'s songs were fairly monstrous. Although, "Cruel Summer" will always garner a fair amount of genuine, entirely unironic critical respect. Deservedly so.

Meanwhile, I'm sort of working on Best Horror Themes mix-cd thing. I still don't play CD's anymore, but I really enjoy making up the track lists. Right now, I'm playing "Verso L'Ignoto (L'Aldila)" from Fulci's The Beyond.

Back in the day, I didn't bother to listen to their 3rd album. I just hit the Amazon.com/CD-Now (ahh, the 90's) samples for FanMail, but I love "Good at Being Bad" and "Silly Ho." They're trashy and not in the original vein of their signature style but work well for the attitude we had (as teens) at the time. We were definitely becoming less sophisticated in 1999 and ready to let loose with some fatty, carefree garbage. Even "No Scrubs" at least had more flavor to it than stuff like Lit, Smash Mouth, Len, etc. They couldn't all be Moby's.

I'd like to think they were a cornerstone in everyone's nostalgia. But, usually, it's kids of the next decade looking back and discovering what we knew all along.

Yo, Lit was cool.  Don't be hating on Lit, that one album with the hit songs was alright.  It's like that one Alien Ant Farm album(again, the one with the hit songs).

TLC just makes me think of mid-90s VH1.  And that's not bad at all.

Man, VH1 played it so ridiculously safe in the 90's. They didn't play any rap, grunge, industrial, etc(.) until maybe 2003 or somewhere around there. When they launched their Celebreality thing and became the channel of The Surreal Life, Hogan Knows Best, Flavor of Love, The Fabulous Life of, etc.

Nostalgia tripping again... this time, Sheryl Crow triggered it. The UK really loved her in the early 90's, they made exclusive singles out of "Run, Baby Run" and "What I Can Do for You" and got her before America did. Her first American single ("Leaving Las Vegas"- which I adore, one of my favorite of her songs) dropped about 7 months after her album was released.

Way better than either U2 or Metallica's songs of the same name.

Ahh: Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie. I only have a few tracks from the album, but they're all incredible- "Front Row," "That I Would Be Good," "Are You Still Mad," and the singles- "So Pure" and "Thank U."

Some of her better stuff after SFIJ should have been singles- "21 Things I Want in a Lover." I don't know why they weren't.

Making a Forrest Gump soundtrack mix-CD, because of course the only interesting thing about the movie is the music, and even though there is easily an hour of extra songs (a CD will only fit 80 minutes) my goal is to best boil the movie's chosen songs into 1 disc's worth. 79 minutes. Here's what I have and what I downloaded but have decided to cut:

Making the Cut:
1. "For What It's Worth"
2. "Sweet Home Alabama"
3. "Break On Through (to the Other Side)"
4. "Respect"
5. "Fortunate Son"
6. "Let's Get Together"
7. "Land of 1000 Dances"
8. "Hey Joe"
9. "California Dreamin'"
10. "Hound Dog"
11. "Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There is a Season)"
12. "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head"
13. "Mrs. Robinson"
14. "Stoned Love"
15. "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair)"
16. "Rebel Rouser"
17. "Go Your Own Way"
18. "Everybody's Talkin'"
19. "Volunteers"
20. "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)"
21. "On the Road Again"
22. "Joy to the World"
23. "Medley: Aquarius / Let the Sunshine In"
24. "Blowin' in the Wind"
25. "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35"

Being Cut:
"Against the Wind"
"All Along the Watchtower"
"Get Down Tonight"
"Hanky Panky"
"(I Don't Know Why) But I Do"
"It Keeps You Runnin'"
"I've Got to Use My Imagination"
"Let's Work Together"
"Love Her Madly"
"Lovesick Blues"
"Mr. President (Have Pity on the Working Man)" (oh, GOD Doug wasn't kidding about Randy Newman)
"Running On Empty"
"Sloop John B"
"Soul Kitchen"
"Sugar Shack"
"Walk Right In"
"What the World Needs Now is Love"

Curiosity strikes again: checking out some songs I've never heard by artists I of course know of...

This is, total honesty, the very first time I've ever heard Fergie's "London Bridge." I swear. It's pretty damn shocking. But, after something as how the hell could they? as "Clumsy" (maybe this one bothers me more because I actually know "Girl Can't Help It") and "Here I Come" (which of course completely rips off The Temptations' "Get Ready"), I have to say- I like this. And I already liked Gwen's "Hollaback Girl" but this just puts that to shame. This is pure audio sleaze. Perfect trash. Utterly glorious in every way. I'm giving it the full:

If there's a right way to rip-off another song, assuming this sounds like an exact copy, this is the right way to do it.

I also decided to check out what Icona Pop and Lorde have done after their big hits. Lorde's sound really rides that chilly laidback samesongy "Royals," the best of which being "Glory and Gore." Icona Pop I wish I could say nicer things about, but they really just SCREAM on every song they do. With one exception, the pretty good "Just Another Night."

Of my discoveries, Fergie's beautiful "Finally" and nasty-amazing "London Bridge" are the standouts.

Churchill's "Change", which was really popular last summer.

Turns out they broke up shortly after that. I had no idea. I remembered the song while scrolling through my iTunes (the song was free for a short time last year), and had been wondering why they never seemed to capitalize on that fifteen minutes. I've been scouring the internet to find out why, and it seems from what I'm finding, that the male and female singers were screwing. Both were already married to other people.  :wth: Way to throw away that shot at success and your marriages for some poon, guys. Hopefully the other band members found something they enjoyed after the break-up.

If I'm not mistaken, Motorhead did that song specifically for Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth. (In my opinion, the only tolerable sequel of the franchise.)

Re-doing my 999 Singles of the 1990's... and I can't tell you how intensive this is. As I basically go through the numbers and decide that "this song is right for number 330, 331," etc, etc, the hours are flying by and after over 4 hours of re-listening and carefully deciding how far up or down the list a particular song needs to be repositioned... maybe 5 hours, I've only finalized about 34 songs. It's 10:30 and I truly don't know long I've been sitting here.

But, anyway, a few songs have been tossed, opening up slots and there might be room for Aerosmith's "Eat the Rich" if it impresses me on a replay. (It might be in competition with "Not Forgotten" by Leftfield, "Milk" by Garbage, and "Blackout" by Apollo 440. But, we'll see.)

Lemmy actually wrote the song for Ozzy, alongside a couple of other songs for No More Tears, including "Mama, I'm Coming Home". And I guess he liked it enough to record a version of the song himself, which made it onto Hellraiser III and their next album.

Ah. Then, for the movie's sake, they lucked into it.

Anyway, finally listened to the radio yesterday (first time since "Gold Digger" was actually a hit, so it's been awhile), and caught Izzy & Charley's "Fancy." Yawn. And this is from someone who didn't yawn when they heard "Whip My Hair" for the first time a week earlier.

You know what are two radio songs that I despise? Wake Me Up, and Happy. Two unimpressive songs that somehow gained enough popularity to be played constantly every day.

The only question is, which of the two songs I hate more. Wake Me Up is the worse song as it's just typical radio dance floor slop, whereas Happy can admittedly be a bit catchy the first few times you hear it. However, Happy is more overplayed than Wake Me Up ever was (I think radio stations began to cut down on Wake Me Up when listeners began to realize that it's not really a good song), so my hate for both kind of evens out at some point.

This man's work will never get old.
I used to be a rabid fan of WAY... and, without question, "The Saga Begins" is what killed my ability to latch onto anything new he did after that (wow was 1999 the wrong time to parody a Don McLean song) (1985 on the other hand? Perfect time to "go after" The Kinks). I'm ecstatic, because I do remember the old fan in me, that he's finally getting the kind of validation for his success that has eluded him for quite awhile. Though, to be fair, he's had a lot of downtime over the last 12 or so years. And, until now, nothing he's done since "It's All About the Pentiums" has in any way glued itself to the reputation of the song he's chosen to parody. I mean, the old adage is that Al's parodies affirmed the success of a song or artist in popular culture. Which it certainly did when he was parodying Michael Jackson, Madonna, Red Hot Chili Peppers, TLC, Nirvana, and even Puff Daddy (and... how the hell did he remain popular without any actual music for over 15 friggin' years after scoring a few hits? That is just not right). I have no clue what "White and Nerdy" was based on or who did it, and South Park kind of beat Al out for exposure and relevance on that R. Kelly parody.

But, finally Al is proving that he's been paying attention. I didn't even know he parodied "Fancy" until I saw the Kids React episode last night. And the second "Foil" came up, I said "he really should have gone after Iggy Azalea instead. But I guess that song is too new..." Now I have to rush off to YouTube and see "Handy."

How many other people from there besides Daughtry have had much of a career after it?

Clay Aiken did pretty well, though I'm not sure how well he's still doing at this point in time. I also couldn't tell you many radio songs he's done.

Daughtry is good, too.

I remember Clay Aiken doing okay for a while, yeah. I don't know what he's been up to after Spamalot, though.

From what I can tell, Idol stars usually have one successful album, if that, and fade away into obscurity after a little while. Kelly Clarkson, Cary Underwood and Daughtry are the exceptions to the rule that I can think of.

I have to believe that Al Jourgensen decided to have a pissing contest with Marilyn Manson to see who could come up with the creepier version. Manson's cover is more listenable than this by far.

My buddy and I saw Yes back in November 2008, second row. We were two of the younger people in the audience, my buddy, a bass enthusiast himself, decked out in his death metal clothing, me in my StS shirt, and my favorite part of that concert... Chris Squire, who had a complete look of concentration all show, spots us, looks right at us, cracks a smile, and plays on. We were both giddy like schoolchildren.

Rest in Peace, sir. Spinning a lot of Yes tonight.  :(

Electric Light Orchestra - "Fire on High"

I love the creepy start to this song. Think I read somewhere that Jeff Lynne did this in response to the ignorant criticisms he was getting about having "satanic messages" in some of his recordings. The album title "Face The Music", coupled with the eerie album picture of an empty electric chair was pretty much him giving the finger to such critics.

Backwards lyrics are always fun. ;D

Finally gave it a proper listen all the way through. I love it. I freaking love it. This is what I wanted.  The self-titled was good, but Condition Human is the comeback. Bulletproof is my favorite here. Just Us is a really good light song. All There Was is a great rocker. Pretty much every track is worth a listen. We have our long song at the end, we have a longer album length, the production doesn't irritate my ears as much. Combine this with that Dream Theater-esque album art, and yeah, I do believe we have a winner. This will probably be in my top ten of 2015 for sure.

Not sure there's anything on this I'd rank a masterpiece, but I'd easily rank this among the classics. I certainly enjoyed it the same way I enjoy the early stuff. And I can happily say "they're back".

If the last one was like an old machine creaking back into motion, this one is basically the machine restored to its former glory and firing on all cylinders. That self-titled album was a good way to say that they still had fire in them after Tate basically ruined the band, but I honestly didn't think they'd put out something as good as their early stuff again. Check it out if you get the chance!  :joy:

I'm not really a fan of this album, but this is probably my favorite song of their entire discography. It reminds me of a Smashing Pumpkins song (you know the kind I mean, more "1979" than "Zero"), but with an extra touch of beauty to it. Doesn't sound like any other ballad from that era at all.

Witch- "Soul of Fire"

This is J Mascis' doom band, and they're pretty good. They're not too traditionally doom- this song has a very Sonic Youth/Dino Jr-esq beat, and Mascis shreds a bit harder than you'd expect another guitarist in the genre to. That doesn't mean they're bad at all- on the contrary, I think this is a cool album.

I forgot to mention this, but I did find a country artist I like- Luke Combs.

He's probably best known for "Hurricane", which is pretty good, but I like his next hit (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXyxFMbqKYA) even better. My taste in country for the longest time has been more angsty stuff like Cash and Townes, but in truth, I don't really want to find modern versions of them. I also really don't like the current bro country trend or Taylor and Carrie wannabes that are still around. Something like this, which has a little more weight, but you can still pull a beer to and enjoy, is way more my speed.

The new At the Gates single does not disappoint. It swings so damn hard.

KONGOS has been one of my new favs lately. You've undoubtedly heard this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bs3nH8bE1AE) - if only because every brand in existence was using it advertising for about a year or so and basically beat the life out of it - but their last album was really good and definitely deserves a look. Extremely my shit here. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wpxXODaSdo)

I put off buying Helmet's Aftertaste for many years since most reviews I read of it were bad and said it paled in comparison to Meantime and Betty. Well, I finally decided to give it a shot and it's actually a pretty good album. Sure, it's no Meantime or Betty but it has some underrated Helmet songs like It's Easy To Get Bored and (High) Visibility. Sometimes the reviewers get it right but it's ultimately better to listen to something yourself. Bad Religion's The Grey Race and No Substance get looked down upon but they are actually some really good albums with some of the band's most solid songs. I feel the same about Napalm Death's  mid and late 90's era.

Made In Heights - "Murakami"

One of my new favorites; can't believe this has been out for three years and I'm just now hearing it. Great for getting work done at 3am.

Been binging through a lot of Sex Pistols recently. It makes me want to read some books about the punk rock scene and Sid Vicious' life.

Aretha Franklin - Respect (R.I.P.)

Well, truth be told I've listened to quite a bit of her today. Being a native Detroiter, we've seen it coming, but still it sucks. Michael Jackson is my favorite artist and I respect Prince but neither of their death's hit me. Aretha passing stung a little bit.

Yeah, Aretha is a massive loss. Granted, I recall there being a scare for her sake a few years ago, but the real thing happening makes it hurt all the same. Her library is incomparable.

Last night, it was some Evanescence since I was trying to see how I felt about them nowadays. The verdict being that while I think Amy Lee can still carry a tune, something about the songs I re-listened to just felt so... flat. I can't listen to them anymore.

At least I still have Within Temptation, though. They still rock.

YOB- "The Screen"

Not sure if I can do a list this year, since there's so much that I liked, limiting myself to 10 or even 20 might hurt. But this would definitely be near the top.

The Darkness- "Why Don't the Beautiful Cry?"

I forgot to check out their last album when it came out- it's pretty good!

Motorhead - Line in the Sand

I'm not into metal at all, but my goodness WWE/WCW has some good tunes back then. Makes me go down memory lane (4 horsemen theme is epic).

NF
I don't know if any of you heard of him, and I didn't know he was from Michigan, but at the moment he got me about ready to get rid of the majority of the rap and r&b music with no content I used to listen to (even 90's - early 2000's) that's on my phone. The guy doesn't curse at all and he's putting all of his emotions into every song.

So, back in the summer of 2018, Zach Callison (voice of Steven on Steven Universe) released an album called A Picture Perfect Hollywood Heartbreak. Finally got around to listening to it the other week, and I thought it was pretty good. It has a mid-2000s alt rock vibe in the vein of My Chemical Romance that I shamelessly enjoy, and is also host to this loose rock opera narrative that I feel flowed well enough. My favourite song is either She Don't Know or Interlude IV, the latter of which is admittedly more slam poetry than a full-on song. My least favourite, though it has started to grow on me after repeated listens, is War. It has a different feel than the rest of the album (feels less emo, for lack of a better in-the-moment descriptor), so it sticks out on the track list. It also happens to be the last track on the album, meaning the entire thing ends on a weak note. But like I said, I found it an enjoyable listening experience overall.

I've also been listening to the Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts Season 1 OST while working on a soapstone sculpture for class.

I haven't done one of these in a while!

Dynfari- "3rd Door: Madness"

I've been listening to the albums that were meant to be played in full at this year's Roadburn Festival, and thus far this is a favorite of the ones that are new to me. It's a concept album melding the theories of author Patrick Rothfuss and poet Jóhann Sigurjónsson. While it gets close to meandering bullshit, what makes it work for me are the compositions. It's a similar blend of post rock's bitterness and black metal's beauty, into a one-of-a-kind sound.

Not exactly music, but I've been listening to Liam Gallagher interviews. He sounds like a complete dick, but he's fun to hear. Kinda like John Lydon. Even when John got old, and turned out to be a sellout (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mSE-Iy_tFY), his interviews are always funny to watch.

3 years and some change.

I haven't changed much from what I usually listen to (r&b, rap, gospel, jazz), but I have added a bit of rock into the rotation along with lo-fi. I wish I had given lo-fi a shot way back when Samurai Champloo first aired. I could've used it to try and go to sleep to. And then it just calms me down.

Now in terms of new folks in the industry. I've listened to some of these younger and up and coming rap artists. Without trying to be too harsh on them, the talent is there. Some of these 19-25 year olds can actually rap-rap. It's just too much street/gang culture involved and you can see it's becoming stagnant. This "Drill" music is out of hand and it can't be supported or marketed. They only got YouTube reactors going for them which is cool but at the same time, sad, because these YouTubers are condoning the music unintentionally. Like I said, some of them can actually rap-rap, but Drill is literally, going out and killing "ops", which is what the younger generation is rapping about and actually doing. Unless they change it up, they're in a no win situation.

I've also tried listening to Drake for the first time. Still don't like his music. I'm not one of those that listen for "bars" and lyrics like some of your hip hop heads. I'm more of a cadence, flow, and substance kinda guy. Sure, if you can actually do schemes, double/triple entendres that's a plus, but flow first for me. That being said, J.Cole and Kendrick has been added to the playlist.

Anyway, anymore music heads still around?
