Title: Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!
Post by: Daikun on July 28, 2014, 07:27:26 PM
I'm creating a new thread for this show so it doesn't get lumped in with the Wabbit discussion (which is where it started).

Warner Bros. released this teaser image months ago:

Now the designs for the rest of the Scooby gang have been revealed.

(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fscoobyfan.net%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2014%2F07%2FBeCoolScoobyDoo_Gang.jpg&hash=6a89a5e87e07b30e619d1d805957faa52accb99d)

There's also more info on the show here. (http://scoobyfan.net/new-details-on-be-cool-scooby-doo-plus-a-first-look-at-the-gang)

They're bringing the tone back to its 1960s roots. It's not going to be a darker interpretation like Mystery, Inc.

I am not a fan of those designs. I can't really see this turning out very good.

In the Wabbit thread, I joke-observed that it looked like they lobotomized Scooby when that poster was released.

And now that this new picture is out, it really does seem like the case. He looks even DUMBER now.

It makes me feel sorry for Scoob, looking at that. :shit:

Ugly designs.

I don't mind the designs, I just hope the writing is actually funny if they're supposed to be playing up the comedy this time around.

As much as I liked Mystery Incorporated, a return to the franchise's comedic roots sounds like a logical conclusion for this series.

But these designs, yee-ikes. How can anyone like them?

Because to others like  myself, they really don't look that bad? I've seen some people on other boards say they don't mind the designs, a few even said they liked them. At any rate, I don't think the designs matter as much as how the writing is. If it's snappy and well done like Gravity Fall it'll be good, if it's lame like Teen Titans Go! became after the first few episodes, not so much.

"We're going for a simplistic, edgy design to match the comedy styling" is not really a confidence builder for me, personally. Scooby Doo has always been scatter-shot when it comes to quality, but this really isn't the direction I prefer.

This just looks like it's going to be obnoxious and the characters are going to be stupid for the sake of being stupid.
Title: Re: Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!
Post by: LumRanmaYasha on July 29, 2014, 02:44:36 PM
The more I look at them, the more the designs remind me a bit of Rick and Morty, in a way. It feels, like with TTG!, they've simplified the designs to make the cost of making the show cheaper, and obviously, it's easier to get away with being cheap if you're playing up the comedy aspect of the series and downplaying the mysteries and such. In any case, I'll give it a fair shot when it airs and all, but I just don't think "edgy" modern cartoon comedy and Scooby Doo is going to make for a particularly good mix.

Comeau, I think you just hit the nail on the head. This was ordered, methinks, before Stupid Snyder left CN, so this is his way of saying thanks.

Daphne baring her legs and she's not on the beach? The designs play her as being at least 13, not 18. Her biggest asset is her legs, usually wrapped in purple (or pink) nylons/tights. This is a fail.

Be cool, Honey Bunny.

Not sure if this is the right place to mention this (we don't have a general Scooby thread, and I don't really feel the need to make one, tbh), but I actually picked up that recent puppet special because it was $2 at WalMart this weekend.

It was okay, I guess. I was marginally interested in it since the puppet designs look cute, and the effects were done well enough. The jokes were more or less what you'd expect, but like most pieces of work, at least a couple end up working. But the pacing was crap. This is basically a two-part episode with a dance number ala A Pup Named added in, but both parts dragged enough that I couldn't help but wonder if it would have worked better as a half hour special, since Warner's actually doing that now alongside their traditional movies. The other main problem I had was Velma's voice. The rest of the cast was traditionally solid, but Velma had this weird, cutesy lisp added which was annoying as hell to deal with.

Still, with some fine tuning, I think that more puppet Scooby stories would be a welcome change of pace from the bland movies and whatever this show is going to become. I probably wouldn't spend more than $2 on another release, but if Warner tries another special, I'd give it a shot at some point.

Also, it came with a couple of older Scooby episodes. One of which was a classic Where Are You?, and I have the same opinion on it the show that I've always had- it's an okay distraction, but I'd much rather watch Mystery Incorporated, the late 90's/early 00's movies, or, y'no, one of the HB shows that's actually better. Then there was an episode of Pup, which still has some of that Ruegger charm, but yikes, the animation doesn't hold up. Some of it is pretty embarrassing, in fact.
Title: Re: Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!
Post by: Nameless on December 02, 2014, 03:16:16 AM
I watched a clip of Pup on YouTube not long ago. The animation did seem kind of shoddy to me. H-B's production qualities seemed to be deteriorating even further in the last few years that Taft/Great American owned the studio - I watched an episode of the ill-fated Yo Yogi! that was riddled with mistakes.
Title: Re: Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!
Post by: Avaitor on December 02, 2014, 01:45:03 PM
Yeah, I actually watched some of Yo Yogi! for a project on the blog that never came into fruition. It wasn't very sharp on any level.

Pup is another show from that era which has the distinction of having its opening credits contain tighter animation than the show itself. In fact, I'd go as far to say that the sequence of Daphne powdering her face while leaping in the air gives her more character than the whole of the show does.

Test footage of the show has been posted. (http://vimeo.com/113678388)

Considering the negative reception this show's designs initially got, this bit of footage has a surprisingly decent reception from what I've seen. Although personally, I wasn't impressed. Maybe if I hear Frank and Grey like I'm supposed to, I'll warm up to the show.

I didn't think the designs were that bad in the first place, but I'll admit Scooby's eyes will take some getting used to. As long as the writing if funny, I'll tune in. I still wish Mystery Inc. could have gotten another season. Aside from Zombie Island and Witch's Ghost, that was the best incarnation of the Scooby Doo mythos.

You know what? While I didn't hate the designs, I was caught by surprise with this. It wasn't just good, it was GREAT. I had numerous chuckles and some good laughs at this. I loved Daphne's puppetry. Too bad it most likely just for this episode, but I'm sure there will be other good gimmicks like that. Regardless what people still think about the style of the show, the monsters as shown in the intro looked well done. A couple like the ghost in today's episode even strongly resemble the original bad guys. They also seem genuinely creepy and menacing which really impressed me. In other words, yeah one episode and I'm sold. This is the good Lighter and Softer counterpart to Mystery Inc.'s Darker and Edgier narrative.

I wanted to watch a little Scooby-Doo to get me pumped for Halloween, so I decided to watch the first episode of this. But yeah, I don't think Spark is too far-off by calling it Family Guy for kids.

I respect that they wanted to take the show in a different direction following Mystery Incorporated, but I guess that is more to my taste for the franchise, since that, Zombie Island and Witch's Ghost are my favorite Scooby things, along with Ghoul School and a little of WAY/Scooby-Doo Show for nostalgia's sake. That, or the style of humor isn't for me. Maybe I'll give it more of a shot soon, but I think I'll watch some of what I listed above for now instead.

I'm not too too sad, but I do think it's a bit of a shame. I think the show was becoming more entertaining than we gave it credit for, and I'm curious to see if season 2 expands on that.

But the reason that I'm not heartbroken is because I feel like the next Scooby series could really knock it out of the park beyond this one. Let's hope that Warner continues to find interesting ways to evolve the franchise.

The show was getting better, and it actually was a lot more like P&F as it went along, but I never really cared all that much for it. Still, I thought it was doing decently. CN (and WB) just don't treat their legacy properties all that well. I don't think Wabbit got near the respect it deserved for being so well done, and I know they futzed around a lot with Tom & Jerry. They just can't allow these properties to reach the audiences they should be able to reach. It's bizarre.

QuoteAnimation (especially kids animation) is made up of a bunch of artists who went to art school and they're brilliant, trained artists, not writers - which takes JUST as much training and practice. It's the old cliche - EVERYBODY thinks they're a writer because words on a page look like words on a page - unlike ART, which you can tell when someone has gone to school and is trained and learned the craft of drawing and animating. They all think, "I'm funny! I can write this!"  without having any idea what there-act structure is, what character arcs are, how to create character driven comedy, how to structure and build a story and keep your character's voices and action unique and individual to that character.
Case in point: John K. and his acolytes. Animation needs strong writing to go along with the pretty pictures, guys.

Wish this had been done a while ago like when they had the first four DTV movies, but this looks like a lot of fun! Glad 13 Ghosts is finally getting the series finale it was robbed of.

Now if aside Vincent Van Ghoul and Flim Flam we could see the hot minx from Boo Brothers I'll be a happy camper.

Interesting. I've actually watched a little of the original on Boomerang recently, and it's not that bad. The stories are a little more clever than they had been with previous Scooby series, Van Ghoul is fun, and even Scrappy is a little subdued.

This is obviously a bit overdue, but I'm curious.
Title: Re: Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!
Post by: Peanutbutter on November 08, 2018, 09:52:22 PM
Yeah, it really wasn't a bad show. Scrappy in particular is at his best in it. He's not annoying whatsoever like he could get at times in his first series and his specials. Flim Flam took that role, but he doesn't bring the whole show down at all.
Title: Re: Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!
Post by: LumRanmaYasha on November 11, 2018, 02:06:33 PM
This is a great idea for a film, and I'm looking forward to it! Though I hope they don't short-change Scrappy. He was a part of the original show, so he should be included in the film too. The vendetta against him is getting in the way of telling good stories with him and redeeming the character's reputation, which I think is a real shame, because there was a lot to like about him that gets overshadowed by the meme of him always being annoying.
Title: Re: Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!
Post by: Avaitor on November 11, 2018, 05:08:29 PM
Not only would I bring Scrappy back, but I'd honestly make it closer to the original and just write out Fred and Velma for this one. They don't really have any reason to be here, but I can understand why they're here anyway, since Warner probably wants to get as much out of Frank Welker as they can before he passes.
Title: Re: Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!
Post by: Dr. Insomniac on November 11, 2018, 06:26:32 PM
I didn't realize the last time Scrappy was used for a genuine appearance and not for a cameo such as in Scoobynatural, an ironic joke like in the CN City bumps, or a target of mockery like in the live-action film was way back in 1988. Maybe it's about time they finally use the character for something without treating him like the franchise's black sheep. Or maybe not. I have no fondness for Scrappy either way.
