Title: Boomerang
Post by: Commode on January 20, 2015, 01:07:22 AM
You know what, we never really talk about this channel, but that may be because I'm probably like one of two or three people on this forum that actually get it.  But I guess as of the morning of January 19th the channel has rebranded, with a new look and a new logo.  Supposedly less classic programming is going to appear(although it's still playing The Flinstones, which just ended, and Looney Tunes, which are starting up now), and the bumpers with the toys are long gone after nearly 15 years.  I wonder where all the Hanna-Barbera shows are gonna go now?

So here's a place to talk about the channel you don't get.

This is a channel I've always been indifferent about. It's fun if you just want to watch random old shows without having to be selective. Premieres weren't really a concern like they are on CN. Just switch to the channel and enjoy.

The rebrand is kinda half-assed, IMO. It's the same few bumpers with different characters running around. After watching for about an hour, I'd seen them all already. They've been announcing this rebrand for nearly a year, and THIS is all they made in that time? I'd expect at least a bit of variety after making us wait for so long.

EDIT: After about a day, they've added a few new bumpers. I'm glad they're trying new things. This could take some getting used to, though... (Boomerang's repetitive schedule could prove detrimental in this case.)

I'm going to miss Michael Kohler's classic themes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i16CUDPUHdM) for the channel; they were addictive as hell.

It seems he also did the music (https://twitter.com/finch_film/status/557445937971601408) for the rebrand. :joy: I'm glad to see he's still on board.

Boomerang has supposedly rebranded itself as a first-run sister channel to Cartoon Network aimed at younger kids (aged 4-9 or 4-11) and families; it will supposedly feature some imports from the international Boomerangs, have original programming for the first time in its' broadcast history and some (though not all) of the older shows are said to be sticking around during non-peak viewing hours. But so far it's just been double-bills of the same 4 shows looping nonstop. Someone on TZ claims that Boomerang is undergoing a "stealth" rebrand, meaning the new shows are going to sneak in gradually rather coming in all at once; if that's the case, then I think they've made a huge blunder. They should have ushered in the changes from the get-go instead of meandering with the same 4 shows endlessly until the Upfront in May. If Turner is trying to make Boomerang more appealing to mainstream markets so it will get picked up by more cable/satellite providers, then they're shooting themselves in the foot with this half-assed display.

CN's upfront was already announced, and three shows from last year weren't mentioned in the press release. Hopefully, at least one of these shows can premiere before May.

I'm disappointed that Turner waited way too late to rebrand Boomerang and gave it a slow burn. They should've launched the rebrand a week earlier to coincide with the Numb Chucks premiere; at least they'd have something to commemorate for it. Instead, the rebrand wound up being an uneventful breath of hot air.

I meant Boomerang's Upfront. That's supposed to come out in May.

Yeah, Turner really dropped the ball with this rebrand. By the time the new stuff finally arrives (which I'm guessing will be spring by the sounds of it), nobody's gonna care. People are already pissed off by this rebrand. Of course the retro-snobs hate it because the classic cartoons have all but vanished (though the original Flintstones, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, Powerpuff Girls, Smurfs and Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? are still there) and they're pissing their pants because Boomerang's not an archive channel anymore (though it hasn't been that since last February when it became ad-supported), I'm disappointed by it because it's too little change and the projected wait for things to improve is too long.

Those shows are still there, but there's a lot of worthwhile old H-B stuff that WB needs to put somewhere like DVD or streaming, seeing as how it may well never appear on American television again (e.g. seasons 2-4 of Huck and the whole run of Quick Draw's show, and on a long shot Ruff & Reddy and 2 Stupid Dogs). I honestly prefer the Huck/Quick Draw/Yogi trifecta to the Flintstones or Scooby.

Most of the popular/worthwhile H-B material has already been put on DVD though. In my heart I still carry a torch for some of the misfits like the Cattanooga Cats (which I know is coming to DVD when hell freezes over but still).

Well, color me surprised. I thought that show would've been on the network already.

Also, the upfront is mere days away.

This channel is so blah now, I actually preferred when it was a Hanna-Barbera dumping ground.  Too many bad shows like The Garfield Show, and shows like Gumball and Teen Titans Go that get a ton of airplay on Cartoon Network already.  Johnny Test certainly ain't gonna do the channel any favors.

Yeah I'm not really seeing how this rendition is any better than what we got for years. At least you could say with the old HB library, it largely consisted of stuff that wasn't already airing two channels up.

And while we're here, daily reminder that The Garfield Show is really bad. If they wanted to get creative, lock up the rights to Garfield and Friends, which would serve the dual purpose of adding variety to the lineup while also not being terrible. But that'll never happen.

There were points in 2006 and 2007 when they did run it - they were broadcasting from the DVDs too. I remember them accidentally running an episode with an overlaid Spanish track once.

Boomerang streaming app launching soon. (http://variety.com/2017/digital/news/boomerang-cartoon-streaming-subscription-time-warner-turner-wb-1202003660)

Bad news: No free videos for you! Unlike the CN app, this will be subscription-based. :bleh:
Good news: Hopefully, you won't need access to the channel to use this app. :D
Better news: We're finally getting new episodes of WBA's neglected shows from last year! :swoon:

For $5 a month, you get access to what seems like a lot of Warner's classic animation library. It sounds like a good deal to me, especially if you like a lot of these works, but haven't collected much on DVD. While I have most of the Looney Tunes releases and still have some of my favorite HB series on DVD, I'd like to use this to watch some series that I like, but not enough to own, like the Scooby-Doo shows, the Wacky Races shows, Pink Panther, Popeye, etc. As well as get around to some of the newer series.

Although I am curious about a couple of things. Like if we'll see the majority of the Looney shorts, or just the same few dozen that CN/Boom airs. And if we're getting any CN shows or not. The site shows Courage (which is cool, but I already own it all) and Gym Partner (which ew), but no other series.

Bunnicula is listed on there. It's been a damn year; I'll be happy to see it again, especially since 40 episodes have aired overseas while the U.S. only got 9. :srs:

Jack episodes will probably be on the [adult swim] app since that's where the new episodes are airing, and those should be available the day after it airs. They've also had a 24/7 stream of every episode of the series going on for a while now.

Title: Re: Boomerang
Post by: Avaitor on March 24, 2017, 07:25:08 PM
According to Jerry Beck, it's sounding like the material here won't be remastered. Apparently Warner volunteered to give Turner their restored cartoons, but Turner refused and decided to stick to their old prints. It makes sense for some of the Looney Tunes and MGM cartoons with racist material, but even comparisons to the prints for Hanna-Barbera cartoons that will be on the app and how they look on DVD show a definite down grade.

I think I'll at least still get the trial, though. If there's enough material that can't be purchased elsewhere, like various Warner and MGM classics, then I'll stick around. But I don't like Turner's attitude here.

Well Juniper Lee is a strange choice. I'm still intrigued by this, but I'd be more interested if they end up having more CN shows on there. Like Johnny Bravo or Ed Edd n Eddy. If they had the Ed's, I feel like I'd have to get this.

Juniper Lee was not a bad show, and I wouldn't mind checking some of it out again. But yeah, I would gladly trade it and Gym Partner for the rest of EEnE and JB not available on DVD.

So, when I posted the list of shows on the beta app launch, I guess Droopy: Master Detective was on there and I missed it. Oops. :humhumhum:

Anyway, the Toon Zone forum members did some lurking on Boomerang's website and discovered a bunch of pages for upcoming shows. Here's a list of things to expect (I'm skipping the movies, since it's just more Scoob and T&J):

Baby Looney Tunes
The Flintstones
Flintstones Kids
A Pup Named Scooby-Doo
The Perils of Penelope Pitstop
Camp Lazlo
Codename: Kids Next Door
Captain Caveman
Tom & Jerry Tales
Teen Titans
Scooby and Scrappy-Doo
The Jetsons
Dorothy: Princess of OZ (new app-exclusive series)

Of all the Scooby movies we have and will get, Zombie Island is not on there. :oo:

It is surprising that we're getting Flintstones and Jetsons later, and not right away, since they were a big part of the promotion for this app. I'm also surprised that Jonny Quest isn't in the cards yet, since he's in that group selfie they love to share, but I'm sure we'll get it by the end of the year.

As for the CN shows we're getting, meh. Neither really interest me. I sent in a request for EEnE, Sheep, and Cow & Chicken. I'm not sure if they can stream Sheep if they wrote it off, but I would love for that to show up especially.

Title: Re: Boomerang
Post by: Avaitor on May 06, 2017, 11:21:36 PM
This week's new addition were a bunch of Smurfs episodes. Nothing really exciting tbh.

I've been using this to check out some of the newer series, and I kind of dig the new Tom & Jerry show. The animation is solid in motion, and the music is pretty tight, too! It keeps the original shorts' formula down fairly well, and surprisingly isn't as talky as you'd expect. I do think the show suffers from keeping a standard 11 minute format, but it looks like they switch to a more traditional 7 minute timeframe for season 2, so I hope we get some of that soon.

I've also been giving Be Cool, Scooby-Doo more of a shot. I did not like the pilot when I tried it, but I think it's gotten a little better since then. The art style is still a cross between Family Guy and Gravity Falls, which are also its biggest comedic influences (season 1 of GF in particular), and while that combination doesn't always work out, I think it does a good job of giving the characters their own thing to do. I still prefer Mystery Incorporated, but I'm glad that they didn't try to redo that right away, and let this be its own thing. It is for the best.

Soon I'll try to get more into Wabbit/New Looney Tunes. I like what I've seen of it, which to be fair, it's been a while since I last saw some of it.

Boomerang is just a Cartoon Network rerun channel now. They've already been playing Teen Titans Go!, Powerpuff Girls 2016, and Gumball for a while now, so it's not a surprise to see UG on the lineup, and I'd expect other current or recently ended shows to start popping up on there soon enough.

A couple of Tex's shorts are scattered around the Tom & Jerry sets, but not nearly enough, I agree. And I'd also like more of HB's funny animal cartoons.

Apparently this week we'll be getting the new Oz show. I don't know if I'll check it out, though.

A disappointing lead-off from getting a Jetsons preview, but the early Scrappy episodes are watchable. Once they get into the shorts where it's just him, Scooby, and Shaggy is when it becomes unbearable, though.

I'm honestly very surprised that Juniper Lee is on the app, since I don't remember that being much of a hit for Cartoon Network and even though I remember seeing promos and stuff on the channel, I only remember it airing a few times a week for the most part.

Also surprised about Tom and Jerry Kids and the short lived Droopy Master Detective. I know its Tom and Jerry, but I don't remember Tom and Jerry Kids being the most popular kiddification Hanna Barbera show. Honestly, I remember A Pup Named Scooby-Doo being more popular. And Droopy Master Detective was very short lived. However, I will admit that its nice to see a classic Fox Kids show on the app. I haven't seen Tom and Jerry Kids in a while, but I do remember liking it

Also didn't expected to see Gym Partner on here. I know it was popular with young kids back in the mid 2000s, but it's not the most fondly remembered Cartoon Network original honestly. Plus, it just kind of feels average looking back. I have fond memories of watching it, but looking back in my opinion, it wasn't even close to the best CN show at the time.

You know, I honestly think A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, Taz-Mania, and The Sylvester and Tweety Mysteries would be a good fit for the app. They all have famous characters in them (in Taz-Mania's case, a famous character in Taz).

I don't think that they go by popularity for what shows get added in.

Title: Re: Boomerang
Post by: Avaitor on February 01, 2018, 03:43:50 PM
This is a show that I remember being on a lot, but don't really remember enjoying too much. It was a staple of Kids WB! until right around when anime started taking over Warner properties, and then became a mainstay of CN's daytime lineup for a while. Apparently it even came back on there for a little bit not that long ago, and is on Boomerang a lot as well.

I'm kinda curious about seeing how much of it holds up. I recall the short subject material being better than the full-length episodes. These weren't really the characters or stories that demanded a half hour.
Title: Re: Boomerang
Post by: Avaitor on February 08, 2018, 05:59:12 PM
I've been taking the time to watch a little bit of Sylvester & Tweety Mysteries again, and yeah, I don't think it's a great show. It has the makings of a good one though. I recognize some of the staff from other Warner shows at the time, and there are good gags abound.

But even though he's otherwise one of my favorite characters, I think Sylvester is a big reason that this show doesn't fully work. In a regular short with him and Tweety, their feuds are entertaining and filled with good character moments. When they're interconnected with story, they end up as tiresome filler, and make Sylvester seem useless. All he really does on the show is try to capture Tweety, yet Granny still keeps him around. There are some chases that get extended for a bit longer than they need to be too, and it gets really tiresome.

It also doesn't help that the mysteries in the show aren'y very interesting or well-plotted out. Even Scooby-Doo usually tries harder. I think a part of the show's lasting power came from having June Foray as Granny, and she still had it at that point. The voice acting is generally a highlight on the show, aside from Joe Alaskey not doing a great Tweety. He nails Sylvester, though.

I remember when Boomerang had a block on Cartoon Network. It left in October 2004 and during its last year or so, it was the only place you could see the Hanna-Barbera produced (Or in the case of Tom and Jerry, shows created by Hanna-Barbera) shows (Except Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, The New Scooby-Doo Movies, and Tom and Jerry). Do you remember the Boomerang block?
Title: Re: Boomerang
Post by: Avaitor on May 28, 2018, 04:57:57 PM
Yeah, but I have clearer memories of trying to wake up for the 6 am hour version of it rather than the longer one. When it went to hour-long installments, they used to pick cartoons by year, so you'd see something like Space Ghost and Birdman together for 1967, for instance.
Title: Re: Boomerang

The streaming service is changing its upload schedule from weekly to monthly.

Rather than a few episodes per week, they'll be uploading whole series every month.

I'm glad they're doing this. They have so many shows to add and at the rate they're going, they were moving at way too slow a pace.
Title: Re: Boomerang
Post by: Avaitor on June 16, 2018, 11:26:23 PM
Yeah, I'd gladly take a full series every few weeks over a handful of episodes a week.

We recently got the complete run of the Flintstones, and they added the 80's Jetsons on top of the original season, and it sounds like we're getting all things Scooby this summer. These are legit steps in the right direction. I hope that we get more Looney Tunes and MGM shorts, black and white Popeyes, and classic CN originals down the pipeline as well.

The app recently added sections for Marc Antony and Pussyfoot, the Goofy Gophers, and Sam and Ralph. This is pretty damn cool, since Warner as of late has been avoiding anything that doesn't involve any of the major characters. Even Foghorn Leghorn is an A-lister in comparison to the Goofy Gophers.

Maybe we can get a Michigan J. Frog and friends category or something soon, with some one shots or even less popular characters. As well as more cartoons of popular characters.

I know. VRV is pretty awesome. I streamed all of YYH and Escaflowne on there for free. It's pretty nuts what you can watch on there without having to pay.

And now they have obscure Cartoon Network and Kids WB shows, Nickelodeon, and now Boomerang in one place. VRV has really been enjoying the spoils of the AT&T buyout.

Yeah, I really like that I can have Hitchcock's Rope, Full Metal Panic (shh, don't tell anyone that Funi's still on there for now), and Salute Your Shorts next to each other on my watchlist. It's slowly becoming more variety than I can get on Netflix as they keep getting rid of stuff for their increasingly meh originals.

Now if they can find a way to bring FilmStruck over, it'd be perfect.

I haven't seen the new Wacky Races, but I did watch a little of the Oz show, and saw the preview of Yabba Dabba Dinosaurs we were offered as Friends of Boomerang. Neither seemed like much to write home about, although we didn't really get much of the latter. But the reception for that one did not seem very strong.

I'm not surprised that these aren't catching on. I really don't think people who are subscribing to the app want new shows, at least not ones as cheap-looking like these. I do like the Warner is trying their hand at more animation again, but they're not really spending much money ob them, are they?

They're giving the channel attention for the first time in years. They've also been airing older CN shows again. I think Clarence is on the network for the first time in forever.

It's nice to see Boomerang be more than just the Scooby, Looney, and Tom & Jerry channel, even if only, like, 20 people have it. I just hope that some of these series will go to HBO Max. I know that Huck and Magilla are on the Boomerang app, but Max is supposed to be a wider venue, and they have been restoring most of their library.

To be honest, I'm not sure if this is more damning for the Boomerang app on its own, or for VRV. All I hope is that the content that isn't already on HBO Max joins it soon.

Content on the Boomerang app has slowed to a trickle. Barely anything premieres on it anymore. The moment it moved to VRV was the day I stopped subscribing to the app. There was no need for it when you could get much more content.

Also, Crunchyroll is pending a potential sale to Sony. I think Warner might be divesting its networks from that service in advance. If Rooster Teeth is removed, that's the final nail in VRV's coffin.

Yo Yogi! is joining October 30. (https://twitter.com/CNschedules/status/1714742415490273721) Network premiere. This has never been on CN, Boomerang, or even the app. EDIT: It's been on the app since 2019. Never mind.

You know, between Taz-Mania and this, I wonder if Boomerang might be getting a resurgence under Ouweleen's leadership. It's certainly doing a lot more than CN is now, anyway.
