Title: Most overplayed songs
Post by: Kiddington on May 20, 2011, 08:23:13 PM
Just as the title says. When it comes to terrestrial radio, which particular song(s) do you feel get played way too much?

For me, it starts and ends with Bon Jovi's Livin' on a Prayer. Heard this on the radio twice today (same station); once on my way to work, and again on my way home. Saying that I cannot fucking stand this thing would be a bit of an understatement. For the life of me, I cannot see the appeal. Even for Bon Jovi's sake, they've certainly done better.

Sooooo... yeah. Discuss.

"Don't Stop Believin'".

I do envy the royalties Journey makes off of that. Between the millions of times it's been on the radio, plus shows like Family Guy, the Sopranos, Laguna Beach and especially Glee, the band must make at least a third of their annual earnings off of that one song.

I hate Bon Jovi. Hate.

I don't listen to the radio or watch television enough to name much of anything, honestly.

Smells Like Teen Spirit

The song isn't even that good. Play something else. I usually end up physically gasping when I hear Lithium or In Bloom being played on the radio. 9/10 it's "here's Nirvana" followed by that same tired riff.

"Enter Sandman is too overplayed. Let's play Smells Like Teen Spirit!"

Anything from Creed. Just... anything.

This band is so horrible. Everything they have ever done is an assault on my eardrums... and yet, almost every damn radio station in the world just HAS to throw some of this garbage into their daily playlists. There is no escaping it. Heck, even classic rock stations are to play them now.

Look, I don't mind if the classic stations start dabbling in 90's stuff; that's not the point. Pearl Jam is fine with me... but Creed? No. Just... no.
Title: Re: Most overplayed songs
Post by: Avaitor on May 20, 2011, 09:18:55 PM
Yeah, I hate when my classic rock station plays Creed, too. That's just too recent to play. I even feel the same way with Californication-era RHCP, and I still like some of that.

For more recent examples, "Firework" by Katy Perry needs to die, preferably not by the firework-spouting bra that she wears in the video. It deserves a more painful death.

Speaking of "new", I've heard no less than three different covers of Rebecca Black's Friday over the past week, while walking around in various locals that have the typical "soft rock/variety" stations playing over microphone.

While no specific version is overplayed, the fact that this song as a whole (even if it isn't being sung by Black) is making it onto radio airwaves as much as it is is more than a little irritating to me. No one singer can make lyrics this bad sound good; I akin this a lot to the Merrie Melodies segments of the new Looney Tunes series. The lyrics are awful; they don't work. NOTHING can make these work. I implore the music industry to stop trying already, and just let this thing die.
Title: Re: Most overplayed songs
Post by: Avaitor on May 21, 2011, 11:14:14 AM
"Plush" has got to be up there as well, either the original or Unplugged version. Even the top 40 station here still pulls that out every now and then.

On the other side of Velvet Revolver, my classic rock station loves playing GNR's "Live and Let Die" cover a lot. I don't get why, it's so bloody boring, even by the band's standards.

Creed would be okay if they didn't treat them like a One Hit Wonder.

Love Story - Taylor Swift, although I have personal reasons why I like it, but they airplay this more than all her other singles combined

some oldies that you never have to buy the single for:
Changes - Fleetwood Mac (or Dixie Chicks version, who cares)
Simple Minds - Don't you forget about me - first song to be brought up whenever it's time for retro 80s music.
Kool and the Gang - Celebration
Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive   /  ABBA - Dancing Queen    - this even outlasts the Spice Girls in overplay
Title: Re: Most overplayed songs
Post by: Avaitor on May 21, 2011, 11:53:55 AM
The thing is, they don't treat them like a one-hit wonder- all of Creed's songs really sound like that. You can probably hear about 3-5 different songs of theirs on the radio and won't be able to tell the difference.
Title: Re: Most overplayed songs
Post by: Angus on May 21, 2011, 12:47:39 PM
I only hear their two big songs; I'd be very surprised if stations bother with more than that unless they're local to that band. As for other songs sounding the same, that can be said about many bands. It ain't a Bad Religion song unless it has those core chords.

Green Day - Time of your life  - they make a musical on a later album but those songs never get played; they'd rather play the thing that sounds like that Indigo Girls song.

At least overplayed songs can get "rick-rolled" status someday.

What, "Master of Puppets"?  Haven't met too many people that hated that song as much as I do, usually I get incredulous responses, because apparently people think it's one of the greatest songs ever written or something.

I don't know, I'm trying to think of some, but I really haven't listened to radio in ages; I've been moving around too much to get sucked into any radio stations.  I do remember hating songs like "All Right Now" by Free, "Fly by Night" by Rush, and "TNT" by AC/DC(actually pretty much anything by AC/DC, except Highway to Hell, I'm pretty much burnt out on by this point) because of how much the classic rock stations in Boise used to play them, but that was a while ago so I don't know.

And I still like "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)", I don't care how much airplay it gets.  Remember, a few years ago the only Green Day you could hear was "Boulevard", "Holiday", and "Wake Me Up When September Ends", so I don't think it's that bad.  I guess the radio realized 21st Century Breakdown wasn't as marketable as American Idiot was; really the only song that made an impact was "21 Guns".
Title: Re: Most overplayed songs
Post by: Spark Of Spirit on May 21, 2011, 07:50:17 PM
And 21 Guns is total Bowie rip. Yes, I still hate that album.

I long for the days when they'd play Brain Stew/Jaded and not cut the second half of the song off. I actually remember when When I Come Around was overplayed as hell, now no one plays it. Same with 1979.

Compared to what they're overplaying now, I wish they would bring those back. Champagne Supernova, too.
Title: Re: Most overplayed songs
Post by: Avaitor on May 21, 2011, 08:06:22 PM
My classic rock station still plays "When I Come Around" every now and then. It's the only Green Day they play, actually. And my top 40 also pulls out American Idiot stuff, maybe "Good Riddance" and "21 Guns", too, but I don't follow that or the modern rock station at all anymore.
Title: Re: Most overplayed songs
Post by: Spark Of Spirit on May 21, 2011, 08:43:42 PM
The only Green Day I ever hear is stuff from American Idiot and newer with Good Riddance the only pre-AI material they play.  I think I heard Geek Stink Breath once, which was very surprising.

I kinda wish they would play the Pre-AI stuff more because they are much better as radio songs than the newer material is.

Believe it or not, the local "variety" station here still plays a lot of pre-American Idiot Green Day. In fact, they hardly even touch the new stuff, if at all. They did play "Boulevard" the other day, but that was actually the first time in years that I heard it on the radio. It's funny, too, because I remember just how badly that song was played into the ground back in 2004-2005; now, I hardly ever hear it.

Last time I heard the song on the radio, they still played both parts.  There was a time there for a while where they didn't play both parts, but they started back up on it after a while.

"BUT IT HAZ A GEWD MESSAGE!"

In all seriousness though, it's probably the worst motivational song ever. But it's admittedly a lot better than most of her other songs I've listened to.

Oh man, today's standards.

You talk about fireworks, people think you're talking about Katy Perry.
You say "Sticks and stones may break my bones" and someone will finish the rhyme for you by saying "but chains and whips excite me!"
You're about to start talking about the evils of ignorance, and then you hear people say that it's your new best friend.

Fuck our culture, man.

The fireworks show I went to last night actually played KP's "Firework" during their song montage over the radio. Ya' know, right next to "The Star Spangled Banner", "America the Beautiful", etc.

If garbage like this now qualifies as a patriotic overture to this country, I think it's high time I move to Canada.  :humhumhum:

...and yes, I am aware that they probably played it for the simple reason being that the name of the song is "Firework", and it's a fireworks show... but still, it felt pretty bush-league in my opinion. It's not the same class of song at all, and was totally out of place in that little playlist they had going.

Sounds disgusting. Wouldn't have mattered to me since I bring my mp3 player to fireworks shows anyway(Playing Daft Punks "One More Time/Aerodynamic "mix while fireworks go off is just an awesome experience), but still.

You know what song all the oldies stations have been raping to death lately? "Wonderful Tonight" by Clapton.

It's not an awful song, although it is boring as fuck, and just doesn't hold up after a bunch of plays. Granted, you could say that about most of Clapton's solo work, but that and "Cocaine" are all you can really catch. Maybe sprinkle in the odd play of "I Shot the Sheriff" or "Lay Down Sally", or sometimes even "Tears in Heaven" or the Unplugged rendition of "Layla".

I dunno, it's all the same to me, really. I wish they'd play good Clapton more often, like Cream or D&TD.
Title: Re: Most overplayed songs

I hear a lot of "After Midnight" myself.  "Cocaine" spins a lot too.

You don't hear Cream on the radio at all?  They play "White Room" quite often.

There's a lot of songs with whistling...

Do you mean "Moves Like Jagger", though? That's a pretty recent one that comes to mind. And it overplayed as fuck around here.

I keep hearing Sexy and I Know It everywhere I go, every channel I'm on, every station I tune into.

But the worst part is, it went from being terrible to irritating to a complete earworm. After my sister showed me the music video, I couldn't help but laugh every single time I thought of it.

I love Journey, and really the only song I don't like because it's overplayed is "Don't Stop Believing".  The classic rock station around here only plays songs like "Any Way You Want It" and "Wheel in the Sky", at least as far as I've heard.
Title: Re: Most overplayed songs

There's also "Stone in Love" and "Separate Ways" which get played a lot here.

I dunno, I just think that AOR is the blandest kind of music on earth. That or post-grunge.

Those are both awesome songs though. :-\  "Any Way You Want It" and "Stone In Love" both show off Neal Schon's awesome guitar too, along with "Feeling That Way/Anytime".

And I love Arena Rock, stuff like REO, Boston, Foreigner, and Kansas.  I just don't really like Styx.

Along with Zeppelin, Skynyrd, The Eagles, and Aerosmith, Journey was a band that I was raised on that I still like and hold a great deal of respect for.  Other bands, like GnR, I was raised on also, but for the most part I couldn't care less about, and some, like Motley Crue, I only half-like.  But those five were the key players to me growing up.

Shake it Off is the worst of them. I've only heard that song entirely, like, two times. And yet it feels like I've heard it way too much. And then it hit me why: it's the most generic, dumbed down song on the radio (or at least one of them), using almost every cliche in the radio music book. It hit the radio and became instantly dated.

Does it ever seem like Taylor Swift is the most overplayed artist on the radio?

I say this as someone who likes her. I mean, I don't like all her music. Shake it Off was one of the worst songs of last year, and in general I think her music is worse nowadays than it was a few years ago, Blank Space excluded for the most part. However, while I like most of her music, she is overplayed far too much. In fact, speaking of Blank Space, that song has been playing non-stop for months now. It's been overplayed longer than any song I can think of in recent memory.

I hear either Blank Space or Style, sometimes both, at least once a day.  I don't mind it too much though since I like both songs.

"Take Me To Church" by Hozier and "Riptide" by Vance Joy are the two big offenders for me right now. I am so sick to death of those tracks, but they seem to play every time I make the trip to/from work.

Style doesn't do much for me, but Blank Space is certainly good. The melody is a bit run of the mill for Taylor Swift, but the lyrics are great. I like that the song seems to not only make fun of the way people react to her relationship life, but also kind of makes fun of herself.

Never heard of Riptide. Take Me to Church does play too much on the pop stations, but it's still a good song.
