Title: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Post by: Spark Of Spirit on July 27, 2011, 05:07:38 PM
Since Nick is getting its very own TMNT show (since it now owns the IP), lets discuss how it is coming along here.

Is anyone looking forward to this? Have Trepidations? Or maybe you're like me and just hope they give the videogames to somebody worth a damn.

This doesn't look very good.  I don't know about you guys, but I'm not impressed.

I dunno, to be honest that report didn't really tell me anything new about thsi show. If anything that's what is annoying me about it- the absolute glacial pace of information leakage.

All in all, I just want it to be a fun action-packed show. We seem to be getting less and less of them these days.

I'm not "feeling" the idea of Donatello having a crush on a teenage April O'Neil (Gawd, I can see the pointless shipper fanfics now!), but I'm going to wait until I see/know more about this new TMNT series before passing judgment.

I saw a photo of the new character designs in this week's EW. Wow the CG looks crappy.

Also, why did they get Rob Paulson back... to play Donatello?

I haven't been following this too closely but I saw some toys the other day. Did they turn April into a high school student or something? :whuh:

Yeah, April is a teenager in this series, and Donatello apparently has a crush on her.  :wth:  Personally, I don't think that the Ninja Turtles should ever try to "get with" human females. They're turtles!

I'm sorry, but I'm still annoyed that Paulson is voicing Don instead of Ralph. I don't even care about anything else on the show.

Is the pie-fucker still voicing Leonardo? I still find that weird.

Also, I find it interesting that 2 different voices for Raph are in this not being Raph as well. Rob Paulson and Nolan North.

I did! It was great. I like Splinter's design, I thought it made him look slightly imposing and distinguished. All the turtles have different designs that reflect their personalities. Michelangelo is pretty funny in this one. Raphael is a nice balance of the sarcastic Raph from the 80s and the gruff tough guy he was in the 2k3 version. Donatello's crush on April is a little bit odd, but at least she's a teenager so it's not creepy to me.  Even Leonardo has nice new side to his character with his love of sci-fi shows.

The best thing is that they showed the turtles not being perfectly in step with each other yet, as Splinter trained them as individuals instead of as a team. And boy, did it show. This leaves them plenty of good room for development as themselves and as the crime-fighting squad we all know and love. That alone makes this series seem promising.

Only flaw I would say so far is that the villains were a little bit weak, but that will hopefully be rectified when Shredder and the rest of the turtles' rogues gallery show up. Not sure about Kevin Michael Richardson as Shredder yet, but we'll see.

So yeah, I'm liking it.  :D

Yeah, I think it definitely has potential. It was more comedic than 2K3, but more serious than the original show, so given enough time it could really meld into something great. As it is right now, it's a decent framework but where it goes from here will be the real test.

'Twas all right. The pilot wasn't as silly as the 1987 TMNT became, nor was it as hardcore action oriented as the 2K3 version was. It was more of a happy medium between the 2.

My complaints (more nitpicks, honestly):

-Rob Paulsen (Rapahel's VA from the 87 series) voicing Donatello will take some getting used to.
-Don having an inner species crush on a teenage April O'Neil? Yuck!
-The Alien race's name being changed to "The Kraang" with 2 'A's. Nice nod to the 87 series, but the extra 'A' seems unnecessary.
-April becomes the latest teenage heroine with a kidnapped father and no mother (again, I say "Yuck!") Did we really need the whole "They kidnapped my father" backstory to introduce April into the series? It's just such a cliche.

The CGI animation was OK. Again, a nice mix of goofy and serious. This new show isn't something that I'd go out of my way to watch, but it seems like a good alternative to what else is on.

Thankfully this so far doesn't seem to be at either extreme of serious or comedic and finds a good middle ground.

Also I should mention that this has already been renewed for a second season. So the show will run for at least 52 episodes.

^ Heard that recently too, which to me is awesome news. As long as the rest of this season keeps up a good balance it should have no problem standing out from the previous two TMNT incarnations.

I wouldn't worry about it; it'll more than likely be completely one-sided. It's not like April and Don are going to get married and have a bunch of mutant babies or anything.

I'm still not sure how I feel about April being a kid on this show, but I do like teenage April's design. We'll just have to see how this idea pans out.

I like how the show seems to be a happy medium the between 1987 and 2003 version. Raphael in particular seems to be a mix of the wisecracking, sarcastic 80's version and the hotheaded '03 version, but without the major psychological issues that the movie versions had. I also like how they actually made Leonardo funny this time around, since he's always traditionally been the stiffest and least entertaining Turtle.

I'm... enjoying this show way more than I thought I would.

I mean, it's still early and they could mess it up- but as it is right now I think it's really fun.

Nick turned its animation studio into a haunted house today, and the TMNT room (http://nickelodeon.tumblr.com/post/34724847445/watch-out-for-the-kraang-in-our-teenage-mutant) by far looked the coolest.

You can find some of their other rooms in there. Surprisingly, they didn't seem to make a SpongeBob room, though.

I'm checking this new TMNT out, and while it's not the 2003 series (I'm fond of the action until they brought in the dino's and aliens) there is a nice little charm to it.  The goofiness it brings can be corny, but it made me chuckle a bit.

Question, the dog/cat thingy, is that the same v/a that did the big guy in the 2003 series?

Speaking of TMNT, I've noticed that lately during The Hub's ads for their HuBoom! action block, they've started subliminally inserting silent clips of Saban's Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation. I checked around and sure enough, The Hub has started airing Next Mutation on HuBoom! at 1:30 PM starting Jan. 12th, though they haven't announced anything as of yet. I can't imagine why they'd want to air that, except that the Turtles are a hot property right now due to the Nickelodeon show and Next Mutation was probably the only TMNT show that The Hub could afford to acquire. They probably got it for a song since Next Mutation hasn't been seen anywhere since it's initial run on Fox Kids in 1997 through 1998, and let's face it, the show isn't exactly in high demand.

These are some interesting programming choices that The Hub has been making as of late: the worst Superman movie, the worst Batman movie and now the worst TMNT series. At this rate, they'll start showing Saban's Masked Rider next. The Hub's only good choice is Animaniacs, and I already have that show on DVD.

I watched the season finale tonight, it was a good finale. Not spectacular, but good. Splinter's fight with Shredder was really cool. If it didn't have to be inter cut with the Turtles fighting the Kraang the choreography would have stood out a bit more. Everyone was right about Karai. I liked the part where April in a daze said "You're my hero." to Donnie.

Next season looks like it'll be good. I can't wait to see how they handle Casey Jones since he was only in for like ten seconds in the teasers they played. I'm really looking forward to how Mutagen Man's story plays out with his personal connection to Donatello.

Oh, and I REALLY hope Rat King gets more episodes next season. By far the best version of him, and one of the very few characters I thought sucked in the 2k3 series as opposed to the 80s series.

The second season has been very good so far. That episode with Slash was great, his fights with the Turtles was brutal. It's good that he's more cunning and not just a dumb lug like in the 80s series. Casey Jones's vigilante attire is awesome.

Also, they finally answered why the Kraang are obsessed with capturing April. That episode had a lot of freakishness going on.

Complete Season 1 and 2 coming to DVD this fall. (http://tvshowsondvd.com/news/Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-Seasons-1-and-2/21299)

Considering that's 52 episodes, that's quite a lot.

Also, the show is getting a fourth season which will allow it to crack 100 episodes. That makes TMNT a franchises that has now had three shows to make it over 100 episodes apiece. Pretty impressive!

From what I've caught, it is. It has wacky comedy like the first show, but more grounded with more action like the second show.

I've got a friend that's a pretty big fan and he seems to like it the best of all three shows.

Slated for this fall, the series follows the famous half-shell heroes as they discover a magical new world beneath the streets of New York City.

Yeah, it's annoying. I saw some of the discourse on Twitter a few days ago, and rolled my eyes at all of it. Though I'm not really a fan of April's new look either. Preferred her Rise of TMNT design more.

Also, it came to me how improv-y the dialogue sounds here. I know it's to emphasize that these Turtles really are teenagers, but it feels a little flavorless. Reminded me of that Good Boys movie Rogen made a few years ago.
