Title: Favorite Disney Movies
Post by: Avaitor on December 27, 2010, 08:24:54 PM
Of the 50 to make it into Walt's canon, which ones are among your favorites?

I can still watch Lion King, Fantasia, The Great Mouse Detective, Sleeping Beauty, Aladdin, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, Princess and the Frog, Snow White, and The Emperor's New Groove to this day and never tire of them. Those are all among my personal favorites.

A Goofy Movie is still my personal favorite, but I'm partial to both Rescuers movies as well.

I have a soft spot for Walt Disney's originals. Snow White, Bambi, ESPECIALLY Pinocchio which I also find to be, hands down, their scariest. And more. For Christmas I also got Fantasia which I have not seen in the longest time.

Of the more recent films, I'd have to give the edge to Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King. Those two are just plain awesome. And though it was after the golden age and before the renaissance, Alice in Wonderland was also awesome. 8)

Vincent Price, man. Vincent Price.

Even the man himself admitted that Ratigan was one of his favorite roles.

Vincent Price was such a badass. He made any movie he starred in so much better.

I have a soft spot for Lilo and Stitch! I kind of liked the dynamic between the two, well that and Elvis.

Though, I do fancy some Aladdin, Lion King, Great Mouse Detective, Emperor's New Groove, and Mulan, to name a few.

Might as well go with The Lion King and The Goofy Movie.
So many...  :whuh:

Last night, for the first time in at least ten year, I re-watched Fantasia. This movie is just... it brings so much nostalgia to me. Plus, it's a poetic masterpiece. :)

Both Sleeping Beauty and Alice in Wonderland are usually tied for my favorites. Then, I've always been crazy for Fun and Fancy Free. Following those: The Rescuers, Dumbo, The Three Cabelleros, Fantasia, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Pocahontas, and Robin Hood.

According to RT, these are the best-received Disney movies (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/guides/best_disney_animated_movies)?

I think it's a fair list since it goes by reviews rather than bias and personal opinions. But some of the choices seem weird. Like in no other list would Bolt or some of the package features be ranked that high.

I agree with the top 10 overall, even if I don't quite agree with the rankings.

What about you guys?

1. Mulan
2. An Extremely Goofy Movie
3. Enchanted
4. A Goofy Movie
5. The Three Musketeers
6. The Princess and the Frog
7. Rescuers
8. House of Villains

I love Disney so much that it's so hard to rank them. But I think my favorites are Fantasia, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Toy Story 3, Pinocchio, and Toy Story. In that order, probably.

Did you guys like seeing Lion King 3D? There's going to be more Disney 3D rereleases coming to theaters in the future. Here's the schedule as of now:

January 13th, 2012 - Beauty and the Beast
September 14th, 2012 - Finding Nemo
January 18th, 2013 - Monsters Inc
September 13th 2013 - Little Mermaid

I'll probably go to all of these but Nemo.
Title: Re: Favorite Disney Movies
Post by: Daxdiv on October 04, 2011, 11:14:03 PM
My thoughts exactly. Will also pony up the money to see all of them in 3D, except Nemo as well since I do think of it as one of Pixar's weakest films. I am honest when I say that I would watch Cars over Nemo any day of the week. I'm interested in seeing how the 3D will work for Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast.
Title: Re: Favorite Disney Movies
Post by: Kiddington on October 05, 2011, 02:20:52 AM
Meh. I really don't get the sudden backlash towards Nemo (not just you guys; I see this all over the place). I mean, yeah, it's kind of an overrated movie depending on who you talk to (Pixar's best? No no no), but come on; it isn't that bad. I'd go see it again; it's funny, and definitely has its own brand of charm, IMO. I've always loved the casting as well, with the only real noteworthy exception being Ellen as Dory. Everybody else is great, though. Love Geoffrey Rush as Nigel especially.

So yeah, I'll be going to see all of these. Looking forward to it.
Title: Re: Favorite Disney Movies
Post by: Avaitor on October 05, 2011, 12:20:41 PM
I think its similar to the backlash for Lion King, in that considering it's huge popularity, those who never found it special seem to have its appeal lost on them, or it just became overplayed to a lot of people. I guess I'm kind of like that myself, but I never really liked it to begin with.

I think besides these, Aladdin and The Incredibles would make for good 3D transfers. I think the 3D hype is all but dead, and none of these movies have the massive appeal that TLK does, but if they do well enough, maybe those two have a chance as well.

Edit: Of these four, the only two I've seen in theaters are Little Mermaid (in its re-release) and Nemo. I was too young to see BATB in it's original release and don't have a nearby IMAX for me to have seen the re-release, and from what I recall, 2001 wasn't a good year for us financially, so we didn't get to see many movies then, so Monsters Inc was out of the question. I'd love to get a chance to see them both in theaters now, so I especially need to see those two.
Title: Re: Favorite Disney Movies
Post by: Spark Of Spirit on October 05, 2011, 06:26:21 PM
I'm so annoyed I missed out on TLK, but it was too short notice for me at the time.

Mostly I'd be interested in rewatching these in theaters regardless (with or without 3D, I don't care) as sometimes it's really the best way to watch them. But I'd pay to watch almost any of the classics in theater again, the experience is worth it, IMO.

Aladdin would have been a great pick, but I can deal with the others.

I've been in a Disney mood lately. In the past couple of days, I watched The Lion King, Snow White, Cinderella, and Lilo & Stitch. I think I'll add some Pixar to the mix and watch the first Toy Story next.

It's funny about L&S, I really loved it when it first came out, and Stitch instantly became one of my favorite Disney characters, but it hasn't stayed as high on my favorites or in my rewatch list in recent years. I don't know why, since it's a great one. The writing is quite sharp, with a heart of gold, and all the characters are incredibly likable. It's a shame that the sequels and TV show didn't capture that magic.

I also remember the promotion for it when it first came out. The ads where Stitch would mess with Disney characters during their beloved musical numbers, like Ariel during "Part of Your World", Belle and Beast in the ballroom scene, and Aladdin and Jasmine during "A Whole New World". Those were classic.
Title: Re: Favorite Disney Movies
Post by: Spark Of Spirit on January 11, 2012, 11:54:49 AM
Yeah, I remember L&S being a real shot in the arm at the time for Disney. It's a shame it took them so long to capitalize on its surprise success.

I've also been in a Disney mood recently, but more for the live action stuff.

Just cause I can, I'd like to ask you guys what you all think of Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Truthfully, it's a personal favorite of mine, but it has a couple of flaws that prevent it from being one of Disney's very best IMO. Besides the gargoyles and needless messing around with the original story, which I'm sure you've heard complaints about a million times by now, for one thing, I do agree with the notion that most of the voice actors don't exactly fit. Granted, Tony Jay is pitch-perfect as Frollo, and I have no complaints with him. I also like Tom Hulce as Quasimodo for the most part, but his singing voice, while not awful, just doesn't really gel to my ears. He has the emotion and some range, but I don't think it's strong enough for the character. I also can't stand Demi Moore's nasally speaking voice for Esmeralda, and the singing voice they got for her character isn't a whole lot better.

I also don't really like the character of Phoebus at all. He's pretty bland as a heroic character and love interest, and doesn't have anything to define him as a character otherwise besides those obvious qualities. And the relationship with him and Esmeralda just doesn't feel right, especially when you learn that in the original novel, he tried to rape her. Even then, their few scenes of romantic interaction towards each other felt very forced and were written poorly, while them just getting together at the end doesn't really work for me.

The rest of it, however, is amazing. The new blood really honed their craft by The Lion King, and there's some amazing animation and background designs in here. The church looks absolutely ravishing, especially in CAPS. And it contains some of Alan Menken's best work. Not even just the songs, which are (the gargoyles' tune aside) fantastic. The score is incredible, huge and spiritual, which is just what is needed for the film. And the story turns out fine for the most part.

This is actually the only Disney movie from the 90s I have yet to see. I'm not sure why, but it just never really interested me at the time and I don't really feel the need to see it now.

Back when Toon Disney was still on, they showed it somewhat regularly, along with a lot of the other DACs that aren't a part of the Platinum/Diamond line. You know, I still kind of miss that channel. It went to crap when they brought in Jetix, yes, but even then, they still showed some good Disney movies and a few good shows every now and then. I haven't used Disney XD since SSM ended.

I honestly didn't like Hunchback much as a kid. I liked it enough to dress up as Quasimodo for Halloween when it came out, but it was more in the category of Pocahontas and Hercules as a Disney movie I tolerated more because it was Disney than anything. Watching it now, I just think that I didn't understand it back then, because a lot of it isn't really for kids at all.

By the time I got that channel, the Jetix Days were already kicking in. Shame I never fully experienced Toon Disney except for a few instances where one of my aunts had it. Seemed like a fun channel.

But looking at clips and songs from Hunchback, it felt like a film I didn't get as a child, but probably would understand more. I think most of the shit with Frollo flew over my head. Especially what he was doing with Esmeralda.

I watched The Little Mermaid earlier tonight, and curiosity had me watch the first episode of the TV series shortly after. I never really watched this show as a kid, since, well, I'm a boy. I liked the movie fine enough, but that was as much Ariel as I could take. The show was just not a blip on my radar.

And seeing it now, the show looks alright. Disney's TV output from this time was overall solid, and while the animation and songs aren't anywhere on par with the film, this seems to holds up fine with stuff like Goof Troop and Aladdin's show. I don't think I'll watch much more, but it was nice to see some of the show for now.
Title: Re: Favorite Disney Movies

The show's pretty decent, but it's basically for people who want more Ariel. Nothing is on par with DuckTales or Talespin or whatever, but it's a fun enough show.

Oh, so Netflix added up a bunch of Disney movies lately. Some of their animated offerings available to stream include:

Dumbo
Alice in Wonderland
The Fox and the Hound
The Rescuers Down Under
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Pocahontas
The Tigger Movie

Plus the Tinker Bell movies and Mater's Tall Tales. As well as the Muppet Movie, which isn't animated, but totally worth mentioning anyway.

y'no, watching some of the Aladdin series again, one thing really bugs me about it- one of the biggest reasons Genie wanted to be free was so he could be free from the lamp. Yet in the show, he still resides in there more often than not.

That's kind of lame.

I didn't see a lot of these as a kid. At least, I don't remember too many.

As an adult, I've seen:

The Great Mouse Detective
Toy Story
The Lion King

And, even though it's both live-action & animated.....Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

Memory is hazy on......

Cinderella
Peter Pan

Even though we're no longer getting The Little Mermaid in 3D in theaters, we are still getting it on 3D Blu-Ray. This is what the cover is going to look like come October.

Title: Re: Favorite Disney Movies
Post by: Avaitor on April 23, 2013, 12:20:42 AM
I didn't really get to talk about the recent Peter Pan release (probably since Disney has really been slacking on the bonus content recently- and sadly, word is that this will continue to happen, since they're just about done doing bonus material period), but this is what the release looked like if you buy the version with the digital copy.

(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flarryfire.files.wordpress.com%2F2012%2F11%2Fpeter-pan-blu-ray1.jpg&hash=5fdc10d00db23b0cbfce071d3b0b1eb064024fd7)

Isn't this great? The use of Peter's silhouette is a subtle, tasteful reference to one of the most memorable and important parts of the film, and its juxtaposition to the shot of Big Ben fits in tone to the rest of the film, particularly by using one of England's most poignant symbols, again, used in the movie, to take the place of the Darling children without completely losing them or the ideal of the film.

But if you're like me and don't need a digital copy and thus wanted to save $5, this is what you get.

(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thehdroom.com%2Fimages%2Fbluray%2Flarge%2F6266.jpg&hash=fc54e70f6ad68801e2b52635e5e8d2cf08e34118)

Which isn't awful. Big Ben is still here and still a strong enough background, while I can't say that anyone here is too off-model, not to mention that the lack of Hook, Smee or the alligator when they have no reason to be here is refreshing, it's still considerably more hokey than the previous design.

But if you're spending extra money on pure aesthetics rather than anything proper, that just adds mere vanity to BD collecting. It's kind of like buying Malibu Stacy for extra because she has a new hat.

I'm kind of with Dr. Insomniac on this one. I buy movies mainly because I want to watch them and have them in my collection to watch again when I want to (and occasionally I can watch them with family or friends, and would show them to my kids if I ever had any). At the same time, I can see where Avaitor is coming from, because I can still admire good art-work when I see it.

I dunno, I like having a little more incentive to shell out the extra cash for a movie I already own or have seen hundreds of times, and Disney used to put out some excellent covers. Since they're cutting down on the extras and even their restorations are hit or miss, there are less reasons for me to buy their stuff with every release.

Yeah, basically. If they didn't re-release their movies all the time I wouldn't always be waiting for a better version to come out before I jump in.

A couple of people on UltimateDisney do a monthly podcast where they add their own commentary track to various Disney movies, and I'm watching the one they do for Peter Pan now.

I'm only a few minutes in, but somehow I find this more informative than a lot of Disney tracks I've heard. It helps that one of the commentators is familiar with most of the story's various versions, and he's comparing the movie to the book and play a lot.

Atlantis is the wiki article of the day. I have to say, I have a bit of a soft spot for the film, but it is far from Disney's best. I like how different it feels from Disney's regular stuff, appreciate the film's sense of humor, and really dig Mike Mingola's designs, but i can see how the story doesn't feel as epic as it should, as well as feel that the casting isn't that strong. I mean, I love Michael J. Fox, but when Milo speaks, all I can hear is Marty McFly.

While of the three upcoming combo packs, it's the one I'm the least likely to get (I love almost everything about Lilo & Stitch, while I don't think I've ever disagreed with Doug Walker on a movie more than I have with his thoughts on Emperor's New Groove), I'm going to at least consider getting it at some point.

I should come up with a top ten Disney list. Surprised I haven't done that yet. I need to rewatch a bunch first though. My friend and I recently started a marathon of them, so maybe I'll do a list afterward.

A Blu-Ray for The Sword in the Stone is supposed to come out this coming week. But based on comparisons like this (http://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.php?p=7869960&postcount=217), it doesn't seem to look like a good restoration at all.
Title: Re: Favorite Disney Movies
Post by: Avaitor on September 13, 2013, 07:49:15 PM
The Sword in the Stone's poor restoration angered a lot of Disney fans, but there has been even more of a shitstorm with The Little Mermaid's upcoming release. Near the end of "Part of Your World", there's a major error in editing, which to many ruins the tone of the song. This is what I'm talking about (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=1Kg57ivgvFE) if you care to look.

Flounder comes in at the wrong the wrong time, and Ariel's lips don't match the lyrics by the end. I can see why fans are annoyed with this change, and Disney has confirmed that they don't intend to fix the error. This might be the first Diamond release I'm skipping.

Well there's talk that the DVD version doesn't have the error, at least the solo DVD version. The DVD that comes with the Blu-Ray combo definitely does.

Good news! Disney IS offering to issue replacement discs of the DVD and Blu-Ray copies of TLM, which fix the errors. Not for 3D Blu-Ray, however. If you buy a copy of the movie and still have your receipt and can name off some codes, you're good to go. Call these numbers or check out the site down here.

I know that the film has its critics, but I still very much like it. Tiana's probably my favorite princesses while Dr. Facilier is one of my favorite villains, and I especially like how his final confrontation was a smaller affair than Disney's used to, but had the right way to end his arc. And I also really like Ray, that scene in particular.

Tiana is definitely one of the better princesses. My favorites are still Belle, Merida, and Giselle (she still counts to me), but Tiana has character and does more than many other princesses. I really liked the music, too. Friends on the Other Side is great and has some phenomenal animation.

So I'm in the mood to rank my favorite songs from each of Disney's animated movies. I'm going to leave out films like Bambi and Sleeping Beauty which only have like one or two songs, as well as Winnie the Pooh, which I still haven't seen. I'll also keep in Nightmare, because let's be real, it has a more memorable soundtrack than most of Disney's movies.

Snow White- "I"m Wishing"/"One Song"
Pinocchio- "When You Wish Upon a Star"
Dumbo- "Baby Mine"
Cinderella- "So This is Love"
Alice in Wonderland- "In a World of My Own"
Peter Pan- "You Can Fly! You Can Fly! You Can Fly!"
Lady and the Tramp- "Bellla Notte"
The Sword in the Stone- "That's What Makes the World Go Round"
The Jungle Book- "I Wanna Be Like You"
The Aristocats- "Thomas O'Malley"
Robin Hood- "Oo De Lally"
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh- "When the Rain Rain Rain Came Down"
Oliver & Company- "Why Should I Worry?"
The Little Mermaid- "Under the Sea"
Beauty and the Beast- "Something There"
Aladdin- "A Whole New World"
The Nightmare Before Christmas- "Jack's Lament"
The Lion King- "I Just Can't Wait to Be King"
Pocahontas- "Just Around the Riverbend"
The Hunchback of Notre Dame- "Heaven's Light"/"Hellfire"
Hercules- "I Won't Say I'm in Love""
Mulan- "I"ll Make a Man Out of You"
Tarzan- "Two Worlds"
Brother Bear- "Great Spirits"
The Princess and the Frog- "Friends on the Other Side"
Tangled- "When Will My Life Begin" (the reprisal in particular)
Frozen- "Let It Go"

The Jungle Book comes out tomorrow. This one is a little too disjointed to be one of my favorites, but I'm certainly glad to own it besides my old VHS copies now. The animation's a bit of a mixed bag (they started recycling heavily with this one), but parts of it are fantastic, and soundtrack has some of Disney's strongest numbers, so there is good, but far from their best.

What's next on the Diamond line for the fall? Sleeping Beauty. Which they already put out on Blu-Ray a few years ago, albeit as a part of the Platinum line. This one is more of a cross-promotion for the Maleficent movie than anything, really. I'm going to pass on that since I have the previous release, and I doubt that they'll pull out a more impressive restoration or new bonus features besides fluff for Maleficent, but if you missed out, here's your chance to get it.

As of now, I'm wondering what Disney's doing for Aladdin and 101 Dalmatians. They were a part of the Platinum line way back when, but seem to have been dropped now. They're great films, so I'd hate to see them get the shaft in terms of releases.
Title: Re: Favorite Disney Movies

The Jungle Book is a good one but yeah it's not one of my favorites. Still, it is well deserving of a release like this one. It's one of those well-known but rarely aired ones like The Fox & The Hound and Robin Hood that almost everyone knows but has rarely seen.
Title: Re: Favorite Disney Movies
Post by: Avaitor on February 10, 2014, 07:08:20 PM
Yeah, the Platinum releases were originally decided on by the 10 in particular from the original series, which were Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Aladdin, Bambi, Cinderella, Lady and the Tramp, The Little Mermaid, The Jungle Book, and 101 Dalmatians. Eventually they decided to add the next few films into the line, which were Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty, Pinocchio, and Fantasia, although they pushed Peter Pan up into the line early as a promotion for the first Tinker Bell movie. Meanwhile, from what I can tell, Aladdin and Dalmatians under performed, which is why they were pulled out for the Diamond line, which is basically the Blu-Ray equivalent of Platinum, although Blus started for animated movies with Sleeping Beauty. I think there was talk of Dumbo and Alice joining the line, but that never happened, and you'd think that Lilo & Stitch would be able to join itself, but nope.

What do these lines mean? Better representation for the movies, which should mean a restoration that's done with extra attention paid to it, as well as more bonus features, but Disney's been slacking there, so I guess it doesn't matter at all. Which sucks, because the Aladdin DVD had a fantastic 2-hour documentary on it which may not get transferred onto the Blu, since they're not even really doing that anymore.

I think the reason that Jungle Book is a bigger deal for them is because it's Walt's last animated movie, which makes it important for fans. And even though I don't think this helps its sales, but it is Andreas Deja's favorite, and his big influence for Scar was Shere Khan.

Edit: I just skimmed a review for the movie, and wow, this got a lot of new bonuses, and only lost a handful of old ones. Not bad. There's even some new stuff with Diane Disney Miller before she died last year.

Post by: Spark Of Spirit on February 10, 2014, 07:24:11 PM
Do you think the whole "vault" technique is backfiring on them here? I'm sure there must be many people who don't buy them simply because they think they'll wait for the next release but then forget about it when the time comes. It certainly doesn't help that Aladdin has been aired so many times on TV and has so many past releases that maybe most people have had enough of it.

I'm guessing, anyway.
Title: Re: Favorite Disney Movies
Post by: Avaitor on February 10, 2014, 07:39:18 PM
The Vault was a good idea in theory, since giving the films a limited amount of times on the shelves did help to give people incentive to buy the movies before that happened. At least, at first. If you want to own this movie, you have a year and a half. None of that waiting for the bargain bin crap. Since the studios are claiming that streaming is the future of the industry though, this is a bit of a dated idea. Not to mention that by letting so few of their big titles become available to buy on iTunes or what have you, that cuts out potential buyers' interests.

This is just my estimation, though. I don't work for Disney or in the industry, but I don't see there being much of a purpose for putting their films away for so long nowadays. The 7 year policy worked for theatrical releases back in the day, when you couldn't see these movies whenever you wanted to like you can now with video and streaming media. Now, not so much.

My older favorite is The Rescuers, but I like a lot of the newer ones, too, including Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, Lilo and Stitch, Mulan, and about 2/3 of Pixar.

I think the vault idea still works as a marketing ploy.  People who want to get a film that's been off the market for a few years have to buy it second-hand, often at collector's prices, so there is still a lot of excitement when it is re-released in a new edition.Compare it to the 'Masterpieces' that never are taken off the market...it's hard to drum up excitement about a new release of Robin Hood or Alice, because they are available in abundant amounts. You can pick up a new or a cheap used copy any time, anywhere. There is no pressure to buy it NOW so that your two-year-old will be able to watch your favorite childhood movie when they are five.

The Disney Movie club is offering Ghibli films at low sale prices now...someone said they've lost the distribution rights?  Hope someone else will pick them up....and ideally, redistribute Totoro without the meh Fanning dub.

Title: Re: Favorite Disney Movies
Post by: No-Personality on February 19, 2014, 12:52:16 PM
Well, I don't: the atmosphere is crisp, the characters actually behave more like real human personalities than the comparatively hyper sequel (and they have human voices anyway), the colors really pop, Medusa is a lot of fun, the music is haunting and misty, and the movie makes excellent resounding use of its theme of never giving up and turning being-underestimated into an advantage. It's a very natural film, nothing feels forced. (Except maybe Penny- I have to admit I think Doug was right there.)

I say it's easily Top 10, in Disney's best animated films.
Title: Re: Favorite Disney Movies
Post by: Inkwolf on February 20, 2014, 08:19:13 AM
Penny was mainly there to be the cute and helpless victim. I'll admit, she was a bit annoying at times. But if I were to choose a criticism of The Rescuers, I would say that, while character development in this film was excellent and important, there were a few scenes (like the trip through the zoo, or Penny's Medusa impression) where they sacrificed pace and story for cute scenes between the main characters.

Contemporary reviewers of the film accused Madame Medusa as being a copy of Cruella DeVil, and while I don't think that's entirely fair, it is true that Disney tends to get stuck in a rut rehashing the same character types. (Jasmine/Medea/Esmeralda, anyone?  I was SOOO glad when Tarzan came out and Jane finally broke the chain of sulky, sultry, pouty Disney chicks.)  There's a degree of grossness to Madame Medusa that you won't find in any other Disney character, from the scene of her peeling off her fake eyelashes, to her hideous, color-blind makeup, to her garters left dangling out of the suitcase. She's Cruella's trailer-trash cousin.

Eva Gabor was fabulous as Miss Bianca, and I loved the characters and situations and story. The Rescue Aid Society song and 'Someone's Waiting for You' are among some of my favorite Disney tunes. And, unlike most other Disney movies, it does NOT adhere to either of Disney's two main plot formulas. So, warts and all, in my eyes it's still fantastic.

Agreed.

I did a rank last week of the Disney Villains in all the films I've seen (or remember- I can't rank Frollo until I rewatch Hunchback on Netflix) and I tried, but couldn't find any real similarities between Cruella and Medusa.

Oh, so I finally got to watch Winnie the Pooh, and I liked it! The animation is especially great, fully expressive, almost like a Disney Afternoon show's would be with a bigger budget. The writing is also pretty strong, and there's some great lines throughout. The songs are hit and miss, though, and the story isn't very robust.

Yet I think that the story flows okay for its length. I know that it being under 70 minutes was a deterrent for people to go see it in theaters, but this is basically an 11-minute story from the TV show multiplied by 6. They could've easily cut it in half and added in another story or two instead, but obviously that didn't happen. Ah well, it was fun to watch.

And speaking of DMR, they put Home on the Range's Blu up as well, and I used some more points to redeem it.

It's worth less than half the points that Pooh was, which says a lot. So I guess I'm ready to finally see this thing.

Yeah, from what I can tell, the Blu-Ray contents, right down to the cover, are exactly the same as the DVD's.

Same with Treasure Planet, which I think deserves a little better. Even Brother Bear at least is combined with the sequel, and Chicken Little came out around the time BD was becoming a thing.

Home on the Range is as bad as everyone says.

Well, there are one or two things that made me chuckle a little. The animation does look nice when they place with the skyline colors. And k.d. Lang's song is pretty good. That's all there is to recommend.

If I do, I might rope it in with some of their previous folk fable adaptations, like Paul Bunyon and Johnny Appleseed. Partly since the staff behind it acknowledged (in a pretty cool documentary, even if it's only about 15 minutes- would you expect it to be any longer, though?) them as influences, and partly to talk about Disney's attempts at portraying the frontier in animation.

They also talked about some of their earlier plans for the movie, including how it may have been more of a wild west ghost story with a mainly human cast, that actually sounds kind of interesting. Then someone brought up cows, marketability, and girl power, and that's the direction they went with.

Post by: Spark Of Spirit on May 02, 2014, 08:54:00 PM
That wild west idea actually sounds interesting. But then, considering how lackluster their 2D movies were generally getting it isn't surprising that they didn't go with it. Much like latter day TDA, they lost the plot.

Disney has a new series of deluxe edition CDs to commemorate some of their films' anniversaries. (https://d23.com/walt-disney-records-announces-legacy-collection/)

If you don't want to click the link, here is their schedule so far:

Yes, we're hitting the 20th anniversary of the Lion King and the 25th anniversary of the Little Mermaid. You are that old.

It's a little weird that they're doing this, since CD is increasingly fading away, but the Frozen soundtrack is doing so well, that this might have sparked their interest. I'm definitely interested in a few of these, though, including the Lion King. I wish 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was a part of this though, since its anniversary is this year, but hey, maybe if they're still putting these out come 2019, we might get it. They also skipped Toy Story 2 and Princess and the Frog, so there's room to keep on.

I tend to prefer their non-fairy tale movies, and one of my favorites is One Hundred and One Dalmatians. I love its somewhat irreverent tone, the fact that the parents don't die, the whole idea of the dog/animal society, and, frankly, the lack of nasty under/overtones relating to race or gender roles.

I guess that's what annoys me about the TV series...all that potential tossed out for generic slapstick comedy and an attempt to ape Animaniacs.

Is Aladdin not available on Blu-Ray yet?  How is this possible?  If I'm reading correctly, the last release of the movie was a decade ago on DVD, which of course is long out of print.

All I want to do is watch Aladdin, but it's not on Netflix, I can't download it on iTunes, and there's no reasonable physical format readily available(unless I want to try my luck at local Goodwills for a VHS).  What the hell Disney?

The belief is that Aladdin will finally got its Diamond Collection release next year. I guess after the Platinum DVD's disappointing sales, they weren't sure if it should be kept on, and decided at the last minute to keep it in after all.

Just as big a tragedy were those classic cartoon collection sets and the Walt Disney Treasures that were probably only left in-print for a few months. Leading to Scalpers buying up all the remaining copies and selling them at the OOP prices for profit. A new copy of Dr. Syn: The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh shot up to hundreds of dollars in something like a couple months. Maybe less. It went OOP within the week it was released, something like that. Proving that scalpers bought more copies than anyone else.

Here's a challenge- favorite DAC per decade? Obviously skipping the 30's, mine would look like-

40's: Fantasia, with Dumbo as a close second.
50's: This is a tough one, since I think each of the films from this decade are artistically wonderful, but held back by specific imperfections. On another day, I could easily say Peter Pan or Sleeping Beauty, but I think as of now, I'll give the edge to Lady and the Tramp. I know that it isn't many people's favorite, but I like how it's such a low-key film, that focuses on character and atmosphere rather than a big story.
60's: 101 Dalmatians is a tighter film, but I'm inclined to give the personal edge to The Sword in the Stone.
70's: I think that my vote would have to go to The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. The Rescuers is probably a stronger movie, but Pooh is just more fun to watch.
80's: The Great Mouse Detective all the way.
90's: The Lion King for sure.
00's: My vote would probably have to go to either The Emperor's New Groove or The Princess and the Frog. TENG is honestly a less-flawed film, all things considered, but the elements that I like about TPATF are elements that I REALLY like. I honestly can't decide right now.
10's: So far in this young decade, I like all of the films Disney has done, although I have to say that I find Tangled and Frozen to both be overrated, and I'd like Winnie the Pooh more if the core story was shortened and another one or two was added into the film. Wreck-It Ralph is the strongest in my eyes for now, but I'm excited to see what Disney comes up with in the years to come.

40s: Fantasia, although Pinocchio is about as perfect as you can get.
50s: Alice in Wonderland by a pretty significant margin.
60s: 101 Dalmatians
70s: The Rescuers. But other than this and Winnie the Pooh, I feel like the 70s really didn't have anything at all. Aristocats and Robin Hood are completely bottom tier.
80s: The Little Mermaid
90s: Beauty and the Beast or The Lion King, with little real contest.
00s: The Princess and the Frog, I suppose.

Haven't seen enough from the 10s to pick.

Copied and pasted from a thread I made on TZ, my top 10 2D features, in no particular order:

-Aladdin
-The Emperor's New Groove
-The Rescuers Down Under
-The Fox and the Hound
-The Great Mouse Detective
-The Jungle Book
-Beauty and the Beast
-The Little Mermaid
-The Lion King
-The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Honorable mentions:
-Atlantis
-The Princess and the Frog
-The Sword in the Stone
-Robin Hood
-Hercules

As for CG, my favorite is still Tangled, though Wreck-it-Ralph is a close second.

101 Dalmatians came out today, and I just watched it. I don't think this will ever rank among my very favorites, but it's by all means a great one. The story is up there with the best realized of all of Disney's animated features, as there are some fantastic characters throughout. I'm glad to own it!

And I just watched the new Thunderbolt short. It's mighty short, but fun and pretty for what was made.

I've added a few more Disney films to my collection, all at reasonable prices (sometimes even free!) and have slowly been getting around to watching them.

I caught Mulan about a month ago, and it's still a strong one, but not exactly perfect. The story, music, and animation are fantastic, but I don't think the majority of the characters are memorable. Mulan's arc is more interesting than her personality, while I always forget about Li Shang and villain when I'm not watching the film, even though the latter has such a cool design. I do enjoy the comic relief warriors though, moreso than Mushu at least, and the general's assistant. The way I forget about the majority of these names show what impact they have on me, but it's a good movie anyway. I have no interest in watching the sequel despite being bundled together, though.

And the other night I watched Bedknobs and Broomsticks, which is enjoyable enough but obviously derivative of Mary Poppins. Some of the songs used in the film were initially written for it, too! But despite some elements that just don't work (the kids in particular aren't very good, the bossy one especially being a dry nuisance), there is a telling sense of fun to keep the thing going. Angela Lansbury and David Tomilnson bring fantastic performances in, and keep even some of the weaker moments fresh thanks to their ingenuity.

And thankfully, this version is the theatrical release, with the deleted material available seperately. I think the shorter version runs better, since the Roadshow take seemingly goes on forever. And really, who needs 10 minutes of "Portobello Road"?

I also have both Rescuers movies (now there's a sequel that I want to get to!), Monsters, Inc. and Tangled to watch soon, so hopefully I will. Oh, and Tron, but that's for something else.

Having now read The Sword in the Stone (the first part of The Once and Future King), I feel compelled to re-watch the movie to see how it holds up as an adaptation.

Interestingly, I recall reading that before this movie, Disney was planning to adapt The Ill-Made Knight (which is more about Lancelot than Arthur), though decided on making an animated feature out of this since it's obviously the most appealing of the four stories to kids. That said, it still would have been nice to see them adapt the other three parts of T. H. White's King Arthur compilation, though they would have been better-suited to live-action movies.

This isn't exactly news- it's been known for a while now that Disney didn't have too much faith in TLK, and were really expecting Pocahontas to be their next megahit. It's a pretty interesting read.

When Chicken Little first came out, I'd sing along to the song in the commercials by replacing the word slip to "one little bitch". I thought it was funny because I was 13, and random swearing was funny like that.

Finally seeing the film, this is probably still more entertaining than it is. There is very little good here. The CG looks grossly out of date, not just by today's standards, but even compared to Pixar and Dreamworks' stuff from the same period. Bringing up Dreamworks is important, since it's obvious that Disney wanted to try to capitalize on their success, by adding pop culture references and hit songs into the shuffle when they don't belong whatsoever, with few notable attempts of humor beyond this.

Still, I'd say that it's a little better than Home on the Range, since there's some semblance of love here. But it's not a very pleasant or fun film to watch.

In other news, the renaissance really did peak with The Lion King. This is a movie that never gets old.

I decided to pull off a pretty cool double feature tonight.

First, I put on my recently purchased copy of Hercules, and boy, does it look great on Blu. Disney has been hit or miss with their recent transfers, but the colors really pop here. And while this will never rank among my all-time favorites, I do find the movie to hold up a little better with age. It's nice to see Disney make a movie in their Renaissance format that has comedy at the storytelling's core, and not as a distraction like some of their other films. It doesn't fully work, true, but it's at least better than Pocahontas, and probably equal with Tarzan.

And I decided to follow it up with another Musker & Clements film, their most recent before Moana. If Disney could find a way to use computer graphics as visually creatively as Princess and the Frog's eased animation, I wouldn't be as opposed to their hand-drawn department being caput. And truthfully, I still resonate with this more than Tangled or Frozen, or really, anything Disney's studio has done since. True, not every element of the movie's plot works, and Newman only offered a few notable songs, but the characters are more than endearing enough to make this fun to watch.

And don't forget the cow.

Such a perfect montage of one great moment after another.

I saw this on another board, where you can take an (almost) side-by-side look at the renaissance and revival-era films, draw comparisons, and pick your personal favorites. The general consensus goes with the renaissance, but when I think about these movies together, my answers are a bit more varied.

The Great Mouse Detective vs. Meet the Robinsons

Here, we have a pair of movies that, while not necessarily commercially successful, have their fans, and have received a bit of a cult following in recent years as new people begin to discover them. They represent some of the new talents who were beginning to gain more control in making Disney's animated films, and also signaled the start of a new change in leadership, with Eisner and Katzenberg starting their runs around the start of TGMD's production, and Lasseter coming in near the end of MTR's. To the average fan, these are barely considered footnotes in the process of Disney's movements that they occupy, but observant fans give them credit when it's due.

I think these are both good movies (they're also movies that I still need to add to my collection), but there isn't a doubt in my mind that Great Mouse Detective is the better film. Basil is easily among Disney's most entertaining protagonists, while Ratigan is similarly among their most fun villains. The only weak spot is the club scene, and even that isn't too painful. I do enjoy Meet the Robinsons as well, but the second act is too all over the place for me, but even then, I do believe that the first and last thirds make up for that. It's still the lesser film here, however.

Oliver & Company vs. Bolt

Here are animal movies that did quite well for the studio, even though they've slowly been moved to the backside since, and feel forgotten in comparison to some of Disney's later triumphs. Still, you're more likely to find a plush of Dodger or Bolt than Basil or Lewis.

The truth is... I don't find either of these particularly memorable. I've seen Bolt twice, and while it's a nice movie, very little of it actually resonates with me, while even nostalgia doesn't give Oliver & Company much of an incentive for me to keep it around. I don't really feel right voting for one over the other, so I'll skip this one. But I'm sure that one or even both of these will rank much higher for some people, and there's nothing wrong with that at all. I'd take them over Home on the Range or The Aristocats any day.

The Little Mermaid vs. The Princess and the Frog

The big ones. The movies that helped bring music and magic back to the studio, and helped to remind audiences that Disney can still make dreams come true. They have smaller intakes than most of the films to come, but will quickly find plenty of fans the world over. And they're among Musker & Clements' most iconic works from Disney.

I feel like I grow a little more appreciation for Little Mermaid every year, but it's just never truly resonated with me in the way that it does for many. I love the music, Ursula, and the supporting cast, but Arie's far from my favorite princess, and I can't stop finding faults in the animation that knock it down for me. TPATF, however, has it all for me. Tiana became my favorite princess the moment I saw the film, and that hasn't changed since. Naveen's only competition for being my favorite prince is Aladdin, and that's tough competition. Dr. Facilier is also high among my favorite villains, and the supporting cast is tight as hell. I do think that the soundtrack isn't among Disney's strongest (but even then it has some knock-outs), and the plot's a little overdrawn, but the good still outweighs the bad.

Not many would pick it over Mermaid, but each time I watch the film, I'm reminded of why I was blown away when I saw Princess and the Frog in theaters opening weekend.

The Rescuers Down Under vs. Winnie the Pooh

I'm skipping around a little here, but bare with me. These were sequels on a budget with meager intakes, but generally positive receptions from those who did get around to seeing them. They're usually considered write-offs in the canon more than anything, but even that isn't always a bad thing.

I think these are both fun movies, but neither would rank high among my favorite Disney movies. I think that Rescuers Down Under is a stronger picture on the whole, though, since it feels like a story that was meant to be told in feature length. There's a big feeling and a lot of emotions in the film, as opposed to Winnie the Pooh, where the plot felt like an episode of the TV show stretched to too long. I can't even say that it's feature length, since it's still pretty short. There's a lot of nice moments around, with some of the general Pooh Bear charm still present, but I'm sticking to Rescuers Down Under.

Beauty and the Beast vs. Tangled

Proof that Little Mermaid and Princess and the Frog weren't flukes, and that people were hungry for more of Disney's winning fairy tales. These were bigger hits both commercially and critically (although I believe that TPATF and Tangled are closer critically), and cemented the idea that Disney was back on a roll.

Neither of these are among my all-time favorites, but I think that BATB has more to offer than Tangled, which feels compromised. It's such an important movie to Disney's canon, and has more memorable songs and characters. I do really like certain elements of Tangled, though, enough to where I don't regret owning it at all.

Aladdin vs. Wreck-It Ralph

These were even bigger financial successes than their predecessors. They're a little more "boy-friendly", which probably helped with their success, but we know that good movies are gender neutral to begin with. I hear that Aladdin was a popular date night movie, and from what I recall, WIR fit that bill just fine, itself.

I really do like Wreck-It Ralph. The characters are all fun, and it has a good message to build off of. And there's a few killer ideas for park areas that can be taken from the movie. But I can't think of a better reason to give it my vote against Aladdin. Even besides nostalgia, it still features one of the strongest casts, score, and tension of all of Disney's movies.

The Lion King vs. Frozen

This is when think pieces were being made about Disney's next coming. The big money makers, Disney is clearly very happy about their success. Frozen gave Disney their first Best Animated Feature Oscar, and The Lion King a Diamond record.

With the hype removed and a few viewings of the movie nailed down, I still think that Frozen is good. But it's nothing compared to The Lion King. I don't think anything more needs to be said.

Pocahontas vs. Big Hero 6

Following The Lion King or Frozen is no easy challenge, and these films tried their hardest to, and the end results ended up decently. Both made a lot of money, although not nearly as much as their most recent predecessors. Big Hero 6 did match Frozen's critical acclaim, even winning Best Animated Feature again, while Pocahontas became the first Certified Rotten film of the renaissance.

And for good reason. The errors in animation that the studio were still suffering with The Little Mermaid were entirely streamlined by The Lion King, allowing Pocahontas to be one of their most gorgeous-looking movies, and it's one of the few Disney movies with a bittersweet ending (don't forget The Fox and the Hound), but that's about where my compliments for the film end. There are so many boring spots abound, and the history between the real-life Pocahontas and John Smith makes the movie uncomfortable. It's just not a very good one to me. Big Hero 6, on the other hand, has its own problems, but it's a much stronger movie on multiple levels, and is nearly as visually impressive. It's the best of Disney and Marvel movie magic combined, which sounds like a chore to some, but is a joy to me.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame vs. Zootopia

Two movies with a strong social message, both among the best critically received films of their movements. Hunchback was a commercial disappointment, making less than Pocahontas and only a fraction of The Lion King, and isolated many children due to its heavier subject matter, but would become a fan favorite to those who gave the film another chance later. Zootopia, on the other hand, is nearly at the level of Frozen and Lion King's success, and has been graciously received by all ages.

I really do like Hunchback, but the gargoyles and some of the lamer gags push it back for me. Not too much, but there are moments where I wish the film could have gone all out, and it sounds like the stage show is that version. I could have voted for it in many other instances. But Zootopia is such a marvel. It has a fantastic message that doesn't beat you over the head with it, allows for audiences to interpret as they please, and has so much to offer all around. It's a strong contender for the best of the revival era, and has already cracked my top 10. I can't praise it enough.

So yeah, I think the renaissance does ultimately win out, and nostalgia only plays a bit of a part there. But the revival is nothing to sneeze out.

It'll be interesting to see how things compare from here. Next, we're going to have another Musker & Clements film to compare against. I'm not sure how Gigantic and Mulan will stand to each other, though. And while I'm very sure that we're getting Frozen 2 after that, I'd rather get something else before, since I'd like to see how I can rank that against Fantasia 2000.

Have you guys seen Alice in Wonderland recently? It's a weird little film, and almost feels like a return to Silly Symphonies a few years removed from Dumbo and their package features, which hit the same vibe at times. That's not really a bad thing, although some of the non-sequiturs do show its inability to tell a complete, concise story.

It's visually one of their most fun films to watch, and has good pacing when it sticks to the resemblance of a story that it has. It's a film that I'd recommend checking out if you want something light to focus on.

I was watching Roger Rabbit with my girlfriend last night, and one thing I thought about was how good of a job it does with keeping Judge Doom a surprise villain. Granted, it's not too much of a surprise that he's a bad guy- right away, he has an creepy vibe to him, that only grows the further Eddie and Roger get into the mystery- but it's all about build-up, right down to the reveal of everything Doom is behind. And there's some decent foreshadowing of his true character throughout. One bit that I noticed this time is how Doom stepped back when Eddie kicked the dip down in the bar. Because of course he doesn't want that.

The movie's use of a surprise villain works better than Disney's recent efforts at that. Zootopia probably does it best between Frozen and Big Hero 6 (it helps that like Roger Rabbit, it has noir elements), but it felt pretty tired and obvious by that point.

Who said Disney were out of ideas?

They were right (https://deadline.com/2023/02/frozen-toy-story-zootopia-sequels-in-the-works-bob-iger-disney-earnings-1235253824/?fbclid=IwAR0QFxaanBDwqZW98yjTKycGS-5FV0HmwptNZU3ui1oopfDp2G6S1ZLSJwA).

What are they even supposed to do with a Toy Story 5? I remember 4 ending with Woody leaving everybody to join a runaway toy commune. If they really need to squeeze out sequels, why not just milk the Finding Nemo movies instead? Just churn out an endless series of movies where Marlin and Nemo meet different fish or something, while saying Dory has laryngitis.

The only idea I can think of for a Toy Story 5 is maybe some random adventure with that toy commune Woody joined up with or focusing more on the other toys adapting to Bonnie, but even that feels like a retread of 2. Especially since 3 & 4 had the message of "You have to let go of the past" I don't know how many times you need to tell that story in the same series/franchise, but I think we hit that quota already.

I know Lightyear had a weak reception, and I never bothered to watch it myself, but it's a shame that scared Pixar away from doing spin-off instead of sequels. Because if they're just gonna mine Toy Story and turn it into a zombie franchise, makes more sense to do movies about the other characters instead of doing Toy Story sequels that just throw Woody all over the place.

I was wondering if there was initially a plan for a Woody's Roundup movie, but the poor reception to Lightyear made them switch things up. Because I think that could make for a fun series, and I'd much rather see that than a TS5.

And I think that another Nemo or Incredibles would be a smart idea, but I guess Toy Story sells more merch. That, and I think Brad Bird is busy at
Skydance.
