Title: Favorite Artists
Post by: Avaitor on December 27, 2010, 08:39:48 PM
Or whoever you're listening to the most. Lately, I've been playing, and favorite albums included:

Iron Maiden- Powerslave
Tom Petty- Today I'll say Full Moon Fever, but there are a few others that can take that spot at any other time
Frank Zappa- Hot Rats
Pink Floyd- either Dark Side of the Moon or Wish You Were Here
Megadeth- Rust in Peace
Fugazi- Repeater
Sonic Youth- Daydream Nation
Agalloch- Marrow of the Spirit
Marvin Gaye- What's Going On
Cynic- Focus
Simon & Garfunkel- Parsley Sage Rosemary & Thyme
Talking Heads- 77
The Beach Boys- Smiley Smile
Alcest- Souvenirs d'un autre monde
Isis- Oceanic
The Mountain Goats- Tallahassee
Death- The Sound of Perseverance
Rush- Moving Pictures
The Smiths- The Queen is Dead
Sir Lord Baltimore- Sir Lord Baltimore
The Clash- London Calling
The Temptations- The Ultimate Collection (greatest hits, yes, but I don't care)
The Doors- The Doors
Extreme- Pornograffiti
Xiu Xiu- Fabulous Muscles
Sleep- Dopesmoker
Godspeed You! Black Emperor- Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven
Swans- Children of God
Carissa's Wierd- Songs About Leaving
Thin Lizzy- Black Rose: A Rock Legend
Van Halen- Van Halen
Dire Straits- Dire Straits
Miles Davis- Bitches Brew
Steely Dan- Katy Lied
UFO- Strangers in the Night

There, a pretty eclectic selection.

Edit: wtf, Full Moon Forever?

Truth & Soul is one of the best albums of all time. Seriously. I'm actually kinda surprised Foggle put in over the Reality Of My Surroundings or Give A Monkey A Brain since it's not as weird as those. (It's better though)

Supergrass - I Should Coco

Listen. Learn. Love.

Outside of a couple songs, I've never been a fan of Give A Monkey A Brain or Chim Chim's Badass Revenge. Truth And Soul and In Your Face are by far my favorites, but Reality Of My Surroundings and Still Stuck In Your Throat are up there, as well.

Yeah, most of the music I listen to would fit rather nicely in a porno, a 70's blaxploitation flick, or a cheesy b-grade action or horror movie.

Yeah, Give A Monkey A Bbrain is the last album with Kendall Jones, the guitarist. After he left, the band just sort of went weird for weird's sake. He wrote the best songs, too. The self-titled debut EP is awesome, however. Hard to believe that a band so young could make stuff like that. Party At Ground Zero, Ugly, Another Generation, and Lyin' Ass Bitch are some great songs.

Sort of relevant, I think Avaitor would love this sum up (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOhxEyPSEoY) of It's A Wonderful Life. Shame that isn't on an album.  :shit:

My favorite EP by them has to be Set The Booty Upright. In The Name Of Swing is a fucking JAM.

I actually like Just Call Me Scrooge more than It's A Wonderful Life, but that's just me. :humhumhum:

Don't even talk about fucking Babyhead. Ugh.

Did you like their newest album? Jackass Brigade is really fun and their cover of Date Rape is great.

Have you heard any of the demos from Fishbone 101? And They Prey On You might be my favorite Fishbone song ever.

Jackass Brigade is the best song on the album, but I honestly found most of the rest pretty forgettable. Like, Fishbone was great because everyone in the band contributed but no matter who they get they just can't get songwriters good enough to cover for the lack of Kendal or Charlie in their sound. Without the rock n roll and the soul (Walter was the ska) they just have the funk and the weirdness left and Fishbone was at their best when they did everything.

Just listen to Housework (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9hgb04T6pk). That song has everything great about music in it written by the whole band. If you love music, you can't hate that song. You just can't.

For reference, my ten favorite songs:

Chuck Berry - No Particular Place To Go
New York Dolls - Trash
Robert Johnson - Crossroads (by extension most covers)
The Ramones - Slug
Led Zeppelin - In My Time Of Dying
Supergrass - I'd Like To Know
The Beatles - Paperback Writer
Rolling Stones - Brown Sugar
Fishbone - Housework
Flamin' Groovies - City Lights

Yes, most are old songs, but they are of "all time" after all.

I know we're mostly rock fans, but I want to ask if you guys are into hip-hop. I'd make a thread if I didn't already make almost every other thread on this board.

Besides the basics that just about everyone else likes, (Run-D.M.C., Public Enemy, Outkast, Beastie Boys), I really dig alternative hip-hop. I think this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cM4kqL13jGM) is probably my favorite hip-hop album and song in general.
Title: Re: Favorite Artists
Post by: Commode on February 15, 2011, 10:04:48 PM
I mainly like those four that you mentioned(although Outkast to a somewhat lesser degree), but I do like the gangsta rap from N.W.A., Dr. Dre. Eazy E, Snoop Dogg, Tupac, and Biggie.  I've also mentioned it/alluded to it that I'm a pretty big Eminem fan, especially The Slim Shady LP, The Marshall Mathers LP, and The Eminem Show.  I also like a few odds and ends, artists that were big at one point but now are rather overlooked, like Arrested Development or Whodini.

Oh, and as far as contemporary hip-hop goes, I do like a few like Jay-Z, T.I., E-40, Country Grammar era Nelly, a little bit of 50 Cent and so on.
Title: Re: Favorite Artists

Arrested Development is pretty legit. I like them as well. And yeah, Eminem has some great stuff.

Title: Re: Favorite Artists
Post by: Spark Of Spirit on February 15, 2011, 10:09:45 PM
The best Eminem album was the first one because it was light on lame crossovers. I fucking hate crossovers, it feels cheap in music.

I most likely like classic hip hop or alternative, and hate gangsta rape.

I consider this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9FbRN-w4Wk) to be the best hip hop song ever both expressing everything good about the genre while dumping on everything awful about it.
Title: Re: Favorite Artists
Post by: Avaitor on February 15, 2011, 10:13:15 PM
The excessive crossovers don't do much for me, either, and Eminem does overdo them. "Love the Way You Lie" is phenomenal, though.

Great song. I had to mention Jurassic 5 just before you posted, but they really were one of the best.
Title: Re: Favorite Artists
Post by: Spark Of Spirit on February 15, 2011, 10:21:32 PM
The Marshal Mathers LP was half crossovers which blew and half really good songs. It's a hard album for me to like.

But yeah, don't really like Gangsta because of how creatively bankrupt it sounds and how every talentless hack does it. It's always about the same things, the lyrics suck, and there's usually one annoying sample they milk throughout the song that doesn't fit right at all.

P!nk was the definition of guilty pleasure for a lot of people around that time. Well, her first three albums anyway. Then she kind of got boring.
Title: Re: Favorite Artists
Post by: Avaitor on February 15, 2011, 10:49:47 PM
Wow, I haven't heard that P!nk song in a while. Never been something I particularly liked to listen to, but like a couple of her songs like this, I wouldn't mind dancing to it at a party.

Also used to hear this a lot. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWJ_P-TdEJ0&feature=related) I still remember that vocal spike after chorus, even though I haven't heard this song in years.

On another note, she has some pretty good songs in her own right. "Sober", "Stupid Girls", and "Fucking Perfect" are all good songs which contain a lot of range and emotion from her. I'm not a big fan of P!nk at the end of the day, but compared to the Britneys, Katys and Ke$has, she is by far a better option.

Edit: What the hell is up with the guy with the jalopy in 2:45? Feels really out of place.
Title: Re: Favorite Artists
Post by: Spark Of Spirit on February 15, 2011, 10:55:37 PM
P!nk was kind of like the non-rock version of Eve 6 or Third Eye Blind. Kind of quirky with some good songs, but it doesn't stick around too long.

Way to mention another guilty pleasure of mine.

I think P!nk made a somewhat successful transition from a quirky, harder edged pop star to an older voice of reason with years of experience for younger fans. I can't defend her stuff like "Raise Your Glass" or "So What", but I still like the songs I mentioned in my previous post.

Also, remember when Nickelodeon used to show videos like that one, and New Found Glory's "My Friends Over You", and Good Charlotte's "The Anthem", and Box Car Racer's "I Feel So"?  Seems like so long ago.
Title: Re: Favorite Artists

New Found Glory was once a guilty pleasure of mine... Well, the self-titled. The stuff after that had the songwriting slipping hard.

It's kind of hard for me to listen to a lot of that kind of music now, though.
Title: Re: Favorite Artists

Nickelodeon used to air videos that weren't Britney Spears or Aaron Carter?

That's all I remember.
Title: Re: Favorite Artists
Post by: Commode on February 15, 2011, 11:15:54 PM
Oh yeah, Aaron Carter.

Yeah, I remember watching The Brothers Garcia or some shit, and that NFG song came on, and being super excited.  Fuck, I still love NFG(Sticks and Stones was a killer record in like 8-9th grade), and Sum-41, and I guess Box Car Racer, considering it's 2/3s of Blink-182.  Don't really give two shits about Good Charlotte though.

Also, a little further back, but I remember watching The Disney Channel back in 1998 when both NSync and A Bugs Life were coming out, and there was some NSync song that they played with footage of ABL playing in the background.  Can't remember for the life of me what the song was though...

Heh, I don't remember that. Didn't get Disney Channel full time until around the time Lizzie McGuire premiered, though.

I do remember that one of those boy bands did a duet with Stevie Wonder for the Mulan soundtrack. Didn't really fit in at all.

So now that tz is getting a music board, I'm considering making album reviews/talkbacks. I've been thinking about this for a while, and now's the perfect chance for me to.

I'll stick with mostly stuff everyone knows for a while then go to less-known albums for recommendations, and only do one album per artist.

I think I'm going to start off with every hipster's least-favorite band. :D

If you remember my short-lived album series where I reviewed Piece of Mind, it'll be like that, but with a different structure, broader focus, and more user participation. And I'm also planning on coming back to Maiden as well.

So I played the new Boris today. In case you aren't familiar with them, they're a Japanese band that fluctuate between a lot of different styles, and are usually pretty cool. Here's an example. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_GgowniQWk) Way better than Dir en Grey.

They have three albums planned for this year and the first one, literally named New Album, just came out. Sadly, it's crap. More J-Pop with American top 40 influences than any of the sludgey jam sound that they got down earlier. There was some decent riffage in there, but some of it sounds like an anime OP, and most sounds like stuff you'd hear at a club. It just doesn't gel with their normal stuff, and sucks overall. Avoid.

Dir En Grey sucks. For real.

Fucking love The Stranglers. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmyAm-srFuQ) I actually like their New Wave stuff, too, even though it's not as good; but their first four albums are goddamn masterpieces.

Title: Re: Favorite Artists

I don't have any confidence in them anymore after Grohl legitimately admitted that he has no idea why people enjoyed the first three albums more than newer material.

All it takes is a keen ear to notice the missing energy, dynamics, and clever songwriting was replaced by generic rock and boring pop. On the other hand, In Your Honor might have been better if it was one album, but it still wouldn't top the first three albums.

For instance, The One was a way better song than anything on One By One, as was the B-side Win Or Lose, and it did not make the album. I can't listen to that sleeping pill of an album without giving up and going back to the first three.

So I just found out Descendents opened up for Rise Against not that long ago. Ugh. No. Wrong. Improbable. That's worse than when Cheap Trick supported Poison and Def Leppard, but at least nowhere near as bad as when King Crimson opened for Tool.

This is why I hate the industry. Shit bands (not so much Poison and DL, but you get the idea) who get incredible influences to support for them. What's next, Blondie opening for Paramore? Killing Joke opening for Rammstein? Gorguts opening for Lamb of God? I wouldn't be surprised if one of these happens.

Well that's a little different, since as a whole, GNR are more popular and have been for a longer period of time than Weezer.

But that's just a bullshit pairing to begin with. Not to mention that I doubt too many people care about whatever lineup Axl could assemble that week.

Dude, that happens all the time with punk bands like that; I've sure been to shows just to see the opener(think along the lines of The Lawrence Arms or Lagwagon) and left before the main act(think along the lines of Underoath, or even MCR).

Wait, the Descendents are still a band?  Last time I heard, the members all lived in different parts of the country(California, Colorado), one of the founding members died a couple years ago, and of course no new material has surfaced from them in like 7 years...

Yeah, they recently got back together, and even though Frank Navetta died a couple of years ago, he left before I Don't Want to Grow Up came out, so it's not that big of a deal that they're still playing without him.

Right now they're playing with the same line-up that recorded All, which is good enough for me.
Title: Re: Favorite Artists
Post by: Spark Of Spirit on May 27, 2011, 06:13:49 PM
I still to this day think Frank Navetta played on I Don't Want To Grow Up, even if the credits list the dude from Enjoy. I don't know, Enjoy's guitar playing doesn't feel the same, and IDWGU's guitar sounds closer to College.

It's been the same line up since All, though.
Title: Re: Favorite Artists
Post by: Avaitor on May 27, 2011, 06:21:36 PM
It's possible, but it's also possible that Ray Cooper tried to emulate Navetta's style on IDWTGU, and tried his own thing on Enjoy!

I might be off with that too, but who knows.
Title: Re: Favorite Artists
Post by: Spark Of Spirit on May 27, 2011, 06:28:26 PM
I don't really know, but it has happened before that the current guitar player is credited with playing on an album he never played on simply because he's the current guitar player.

Not to take anything away from Cooper, but Navetta co-wrote songs on the album and I even think he's listed under "additional guitar player" or something leading me to believe he either left during recording or after the album was done.

I can't be sure, but it's something I've always thought. Especially considering how different Enjoy is from everything else, as well as All is also different.

Nice hip-hop selections. I've been trying to get more into that type of music lately, and some of these I'm already familiar with. Some I like a great deal (Tribe, Del and JMT <3), others I can't get into (Tupac, Biggie, and Wu Tang do little for me), and a decent chunk I'm unfamiliar with.

I have been obsessed with The Kills lately. Their new album is a strong contender for AOTY for me so far, and has encouraged me to replay their earlier stuff, which I have been doing nonstop.

Obviously Alison is the driving force to why I like the band so much, but Jamie Hince is good as well. He and VV share some great harmonies and his guitar has a distinctive sludgy tone that adds to their sound. Without Hotel, I don't think Alison could hold her own.

Blood Pressures, the new one, is my favorite, and I'd recommend either it or Midnight Boom for newbies.

First of all, the Sabbath reunion ain't happening. A reporter misunderstood Iommi, and got our hopes up for nothing. Forget about that, for now.

But as for new Opeth, holy shmoly. There's next to no death metal in there now. Instead, there's traces of just about everything else. Swedish folk, jazz, traditional heavy metal are the most common trends in it. It all sounds so good, too. Mikael Åkerfeldt isn't doing his so-so death growls and is belting out his sweet normal singing voice instead, which I consider to be a far better substitute, and easier for new listeners to get into. The rest of the band, themselves, are incredible.

The wait was worth it. Now to check out the new Peste Noire.

You guys probably know about how much I enjoy Iced Earth, so with the new album out today, of course I had to check it out. It's pretty eh though. The new singer is okay, but I think he tries to sound too much like Barlow and Ripper for most of it.

I might give it some more time, though. Schaffer's lyrics are solid from what I can tell, and it just might be a grower.

Not listening to Gin at least once a month is bad for your health. I'm an unforgiving Cobalt fangirl.

I was blown away by quite a few albums this year. Mostly the new Septic Flesh and Blut Aus Nord.

Anyways, I've been binging on !T.O.O.H.! and Astral Sleep a lot lately, mostly for reviewing purposes. I love !T.O.O.H.!, but I really need to be in the mood for Astral Sleep (though they're also quite good, very doomy and very Finnish in their style).

So uh, apparently a new Van Halen album is dropping on February 7th, the first one in nearly 30 years to feature Diamond Dave.  A new single, titled "Tattoo", also debuts next week.

http://www.vhnd.com/

Thoughts?  I think this is either gonna be really really bad(like, Chinese Democracy bad), or it'll kick ass.  I love Dave, so I'm hoping for the latter.  It's been so long since "Hot For Teacher" and "Panama", do they still got it?

So I don't know how many fans are on the board, but apparently At The Drive In, a post-hardcore band who was somewhat popular in the mid to late 90's and into the early 2000's(and are pretty influential; think along the lines of Jawbreaker or Fugazi), is reuniting after being apart for ten something years.  I honestly have mixed feelings, because while I liked them back when, there's just some things that I think are better off staying in the past.  I'd probably have the same feelings if Jawbreaker announced they were reforming.

That and I haven't listened to or thought about them in quite some time.

A hidden gem. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPYGKCG-PsE)

It manages to sound very 80s, but like most of her early work it still has the soul (and beat) of rock n roll. It wasn't a single, so I doubt many have heard it unless they owned the album... But in my opinion, it should have been one. Call it a guilty pleasure, I guess.

So after some recent thought, I don't think that I have a second favorite band. When asked, some days I'll say Sabbath. Other days I'll go with INXS. Other days still I'll say Agalloch. On days other than those maybe The Kills. Or Zeppelin. Or Cynic. Or Dead Kennedys. Or the Beach Boys.

It's really all over the place. My replies and my taste.

Title: Re: Favorite Artists
Post by: Avaitor on April 29, 2012, 07:34:31 PM
Random question, but am I the only one that doesn't like my albums to run on too long? By that, I mean that I think that 40-45 minutes is the perfect running time for a 1 LP album, and that if it's going to be much longer, your material better be good enough to fill out that length.

It seems like a fair amount of artists today try to fill up their allotted 80 minute time limit as much as they can, and you can tell that there's some filler that could easily be cut out if it extends past the hour mark. Hell, even Maiden has been going that route with their past couple of albums.
Title: Re: Favorite Artists
Post by: Foggle on April 29, 2012, 07:51:07 PM
Yeah, any album starts to drag when it goes on for longer than an hour. Doubles are the worst. I agree with you that 45 minutes is just about the perfect run time. Anything from 40-50 hits that sweet spot for me.
Title: Re: Favorite Artists
Post by: Avaitor on April 29, 2012, 08:03:22 PM
I mean, don't get me wrong, there are plenty of great double albums, and I do really like Maiden's longer stuff.

But I'm listening to Accept's comeback album from about 2 years ago, and while some of it is pretty good, we didn't need 67 minutes worth of material in one disc. You could have easily left some of this on the cutting room floor or save them for next time, since a lot of little things need polishing throughout.
Title: Re: Favorite Artists
Post by: Spark Of Spirit on April 29, 2012, 08:06:09 PM
Between 30 minutes and 45 minutes is usually the best length. If it's any longer than that there's usually some duff filler that you always end up skipping.
Title: Re: Favorite Artists
Post by: Foggle on April 29, 2012, 08:07:41 PM
There are definitely exceptions to the rule, but generally longer albums tend to have too much filler IMO.

I should look for Hemispheres the next time I'm there. I still don't own a copy.

Although the next time I'm at WalMart, I'll probably buy season 1 of The Jetsons anyway.

Two things-

1- On the subject of WalMart, I forgot that Demi's first 2 albums are there for $7 each. If you wanna humor me or give her a shot, I'd recommend checking those out. I still say that Here We Go Again is a close to perfect pop album.

2- Do me a favor and vote for Marky Mark, please. (http://www.guitarworld.com/poll-greatest-guitarist-all-time-round-1-jeff-beck-vs-mark-knopfler)

Yeah. I love Jeff, but it's not fair.

A lot of these aren't. I mean, Nuno, my own personal favorite, went against Steve Vai. Guess who won that?

But back to 1, if you want more incentive, check out this. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWFWRLE1X3Q) Miley she ain't.

Other great ones-

Pete Townshend vs. Robbie Krieger. The winner= the one that didn't play lead

Stevie Ray Vaughan vs. Johnny Winter. Two great guitarists, but the winner got 90% of the votes. Guess which one that was.

Lindsey Buckingham vs. Peter Frampton. Totally unfair, but Lindsey smeared Frampton.

Tom Morello vs. Robert Fripp. "Bulls on Parade" vs. "21st Century Schizoid Man". Guess who won.

James Hetfield vs. Scott Ian. James played lead in but one song in Metallica's history, against Scott's dozens of times, but Hetfield still creamed him.

Tony Iommi vs. Leslie West. Tony thankfully won, but this was still unfair. Leslie kicks ass, but all people know from him is "Mississippi Queen".

Zakk Wylde vs. George Lynch. .... Moving on.

But whatever, we all know Eddie's gonna win.

Kirk also smeared the good Slayer guitarist.

I'm afraid of who they'll pit Michael Schenker, my other favorite, against. Probably Clapton or Page.

Clapton or Hendrix are the obvious picks for winners. Though Page might pull a surprise upset.

Metallica stole one of the greatest funk rock bassists ever from Infectious Grooves. You can barely even hear the bass in the former's songs, and when you can, it's really boring.

That's enough for me to hate Metallica. That, and I think their music is bad.

You know what one of my favorite Metallica stories is?

When Cliff died and they were auditioning for other bass players, Les Claypool tried out for the job. They didn't let him in because, and I shit you not, he was literally too good for them. He eventually did play with the band though- he played banjo on their cover of "Tuesday's Gone".

Also, this proves that they weren't joking. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZDdrUi1HzI)

I've always just found them boring. I thought Dave Mustaine was a better songwriter than anyone in Metallica, and were way more interesting to listen to.

They must have thought so too since they were using material he wrote almost three albums into their career.

Is there a bassist alive better than Les Claypool? That cover was like 1000x better than the original song.

One time I saw some chucklefuck RHCP fans calling Claypool overrated and saying that Flea is better. God no.

The problem with Primus is that as a songwriter Claypool is incredibly inconsistent. They probably would have been huge if they didn't sort of fade away around Pork Soda.

Same issue with Fishbone, really. Only they had a much messier time staying together.

I would still recommend Truth & Soul to any fan of rock music, however. Same with Sea Of Cheese for Primus.

Fishbone really went in a steady decline after The Reality of My Surroundings. Still Stuck In Your Throat was pretty good, though. Primus/Claypool haven't ever really gone downhill; they've always been kind of hit and miss. But their hits more than make up for their misses.

Seas of Cheese is up there for me, too. I really like Primus, but yeah, Les can be way too weird for most people.

It's funny about Metallica. As boring of a lead guitarist as Kirk is (seriously, his best stuff was on the first album, which he literally stole note by note from Dave's scraps), as sloppy as Lars is, and as awful of a singer and guitarist James is, their bassists are typically pretty good. Cliff was easily the best part of the first three albums. Jason is a great metal bassist, but you'd never figure it out since they dubbed him out of the recordings (check out Flotsam & Jetsam and his Voivod work). Robert is way more cool in literally every other album he's played on. And for all the problems St. Anger had, Bob Rock's bass playing was the only redeeming quality.

It's really says something when the best members of the band either got kicked out and formed a much better one, died, and left due to being criminally underused.

They suffered hard after losing Kendall Jones and Chris Dowd. Losing the Rock n Roll and the Soul writers threw their balance out of whack. Not to mention the lyrics.

They've never topped Ma & Pa, Question Of Life, Pouring Rain, Mighty Long Way, Ghetto Soundwave, or Change since then.

I enjoy pretty much everything before Give A Monkey A Brain, though I find the first album is a bit too heavy on filler. And Reality is when they seem to get a bit too big for their britches but too be fair, it lead to this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X15Riw5JwqE) which is probably their crowning achievement as a band since they all wrote it.

But Truth & Soul? That album is filled with soul and passion, and the lyrics are so hopeful and positive that you just can't help but love it. To be honest, I'm surprised it wasn't a huge hit at the time even on rock radio.

Cool!

Pyromania was pretty great, by the way. I'll be listening to Hysteria soon and hoping for the best there. So far, I can see why they were big. They might be "hair band" or whatever, but they definitely had the songs to back them up.

Eh, I don't think there's really any filler on In Your Face. I like the whole thing almost as much as Truth and Soul. I don't outright hate any of the albums - Give a Monkey a Brain has Unyielding Condition, Lemon Meringue, and Nutt Megalomaniac / Chim Chim has Alcoholic / never listened to Psychotic Friends / I actually really like Still Stuck - but yeah, nothing compares to their early work.

So I assume you've heard the two EPs (the previously mentioned one and It's A Wonderful Life), but have you listened to those demos at all? Some very fun tracks.

The first 3 Def Leppard albums are classic glam metal. They get progressively less heavy as they get along, but I think that Pyromania is a perfect balance between pop rock and hard rock sensibilities.

I dunno, I don't find the second half quite as good as the first half of IYF, I actually thought the EP was better. But I really detested Chim Chim, that one really felt like they were trying too hard. Still Stuck didn't age as well to me, the lyrics are pretty junk for the most part even though some songs are decent. But yeah, I've heard the demos. They're alright, but nothing quite as great as anything on the pre-Monkey material.

Would Stagefright be predictable? The singles I already know, but the other stuff was pretty great. The album actually seemed like it was getting better as it went. By Billy's Got A Gun I was kind of sad it was over.

I'm aware that Hysteria is more pop, but I'm still eager to give it a go. If the singles are anything close to what I should expect, at least the songs are still good even if the sound is lighter.

Still Stuck isn't amazing, but I love Jackass Brigade and their cover of Date Rape.

Yeah, the only good song on Chim Chim is Alcoholic. The rest is pretty disposable, except for Swim, which is easily Fishbone's second worst after Babyhead.

Crazy Glue is pretty bad if I recall correctly. Forgot that even existed until now. What are your thoughts on it?

Yeah, those are the best things on Still Stuck. It was the closest they've sounded to the old style since Reality.

When it comes to Fishbone, there are a few qualifiers for what makes a bad song.

One is that no matter how dark their material can get, they always rely on the fact that natural positivity is always the counterbalance to whatever bad will happen. They deal with some dark themes on Truth & Soul and Reality, but while they acknowledge these things, they realize that in the grand scheme these things are microscopic compared to the good the world offers. They're at their best when they are positive, because their appeal is the underdogs who never give up.

After Reality, other than a small handful of songs, they completely lost the plot.

Two is that their sound is wide and inclusive. It makes them accessible to anyone who loves music. They write all styles and aren't afraid to combine them. This makes their pleas of unity even more believable than they already were.

After Reality, every album is pretty much 10+ songs of the same style.

Three is that the lyrics are very powerful, sometimes moving, sometimes funny, and sometimes dark. But always hopeful.

After Reality, their lyrics lost almost all soul. Unyielding Condition is the only song with lyrics that matches their older stuff.

But despite that, there are some songs before Reality that suffer from what I mentioned. Babyhead is terrible. If I Were A... I'd is total filler, Junkie's Prayer is redundant considering the following song (It's well written, but... it's not really needed is it?), One Day is four minutes of the same thing over and over (I like this song, but I can't really defend how repetitive it is), Subliminal Fascism and Deep Inside are both short songs treading the same territory on the same album, the second half of IYF kind of relies more on groove than song, and the EP's production isn't strong enough. But as to their B-Sides, well It's A Wonderful Life is pretty great, but the rest kind of bore me.

^Despite all that, I really enjoy their first three albums and EPs. It's just such a shame they lost the plot.

I don't care that it's repetitive... One Day is one of my favorites.

I don't think this is a bad thing at all. But you know what kind of music I like.

I'm listening to Psychotic Friends Nuttwerx right now. Five tracks in at the moment. This is actually a really good album so far, IMO. Yeah, Everybody Is A Star is shit (I hate Gwen Stefani) and Where'd You Get Those Pants? has abysmal lyrics, but the music is really fun. Shakey Ground is a great funk rock track, while The Suffering and One Planet People are just pleasant listens (dark lyrics of the former notwithstanding).

My problem with Nuttwerx is that it feels very phony. Not forced like Chim Chim, or too much like Monkey, or even scattershot like Still Stuck. It feels like they went in to make an album that they think people wanted from Fishbone (Positive and upbeat), but instead they just sort of threw non-negative lyrics together and called it a day.

The lyrics became incredibly stupid after Monkey (which was too serious), and they really don't have any real thought put into them. Sound-wise it's pleasant enough, I guess, but I just can't get into lyrics like:

I flew to the nearest escape
I ran from the land of rape
I jumped in the krnked up pit
I skuttled over snakes and bacon bits
I slipped on the peel of misfortune
I stumbled while tryin' to recover a fumble
I scraped up the flattened and started again
I leaped from within without a spring or a spin

Bad lyrics don't bother me unless they're outright offensive, tbh. Good lyrics really improve a song, though.

I don't find their latter material flat-out awful (other than Chim Chim), but after Still Stuck I told myself that unless they get the original line up back together they just weren't going to make the music I wanted from them.

Nope. The song titles alone made me realize it was more of the same.

No. It's just really, really boring. It's better than Chim Chim, but it's not as good as Alcoholic, which is their worst good song.

Crazy Glue and DUI Friday are about on par with Monkey, though.

Yeah, "Money for Nothing" and maybe "Sultans of Swing" aside, their work as a whole is somewhat forgotten. Which is a shame, since Knopfler was an incredible musician and they have some really sharp compositions.

At least they did up to Brothers in Arms. When they started going in a more country route, they lost me.

I still hear "Walk of Life" and "Southbound Again" on the radio occasionally, so I wouldn't say they're totally forgotten beyond those two songs.

They are definitely underrated either way, though.

Heh, speaking of Primus, I found a copy of Pork Soda at the GoodWill by my gym today. I nearly picked it up, but I only had enough money for either it or my brunch, so I had to put it on hold.

I'm hoping that it'll still be there the next time I'm able to go there, which will be in a few days. I'm still kicking myself for holding off on buying The Low End Theory at the one by campus.

-Paranoid
-Billion Dollar Babies
-Whitesnake '87
-Sailing the Seas of Cheese

So my friend and I made this unofficial "Best of" from Priest in the 80's. Since most of their 80's stuff sucks.

Rapid Fire
The Rage
The Hellion/Electric Eye
Bloodstone
(Take These) Chains
Screaming for Vengeance
Freewheel Burning
Jawbreaker
Ram It Down

Download these and buy Unleashed in the East and Painkiller, and you've got all the Judas Priest you need.

QuoteTHD Interview by Abigail Sweetwater

I've known Germ (Jeremy Page), and Godforbid for almost three years now, and I can confidently say: anyone who's listened to all of That Handsome Devil's albums, knows them just as well. They are the music they make. But that by no means has slowed the constant flood of questions that I, and I'm sure most of you, are dying to ask. They communicate in jokes, and stern opinions, and while hanging out any random night, I can't help but think "someone else should be hearing this!" So I decided to sit down, and make it happen.

A: how do you write your songs?

JP: Shitty question, next..

A: Come on, these questions aren't for me they're for the people.

JP: What people?

GFB: The ones who live in the computer, and come to the shows.

A: Yeah, those people.

GFB: It's easy really; I eat life, and shit words, and he eats life and shits music.

JP: Some people eat life, and shit carpentry.

GFB: Yeah, I wish I was one of those people, I'd build a cabin... out of shit. A: Alright guys, you know how I love to talk about poo..

JP: Magic poo.

A: Okay, yes, speaking of magic poo; I think people would say your music has a bit of mystisim to it. GFB: We burn incense and sacrifice goats while recording.

JP: Yup, a lot of dead goats.

GFB: Yes it is; it's getting so now we do it just to watch their expression change, though to be fair their expressions change very little.

A: I thought it smelt like dead goat in here.

GFB: But really; I don't know if it's mysticism, I'd say more paranoia and escapism.

A: What do you think about pop music today?

JP: We don't.

GFB: The whole things become lip service; rock and roll and hip hop are clothing choices, and the attitudes an accessory.

JP: How many fucking songs can you write about dancing?!

GFB: Yeah, America's obsession with singing and dancing is ridiculous, we need plumbers and engineers, everyone just wants to prance around on camera, or throw a ball for a living.

A: Well what about you guys, what's the difference?

JP: He writes, and I make music.

GFB: What we do on stage is just the only delivery method available. It's not some choreographed seal clapping.

JP: There's also a lot of good new music out there.

GFB: Definitely. I'm constantly hearing new, innovative and beautiful artists.

A: Can you name some?

JP: I don't listen to any of em', I just know they're there.

A: If someone didn't know you, and just saw your online following, they would think you were doing quite well, but you're not, you're poor, how does that work out?

JP: Well, we don't have a manager, we don't have a label, and we don't have any financial backers, where we've gotten is through word of mouth. All we make goes into keeping the whole thing going.

GFB: It's not hotel art, it has opinion, so some disagree with it.

A: But it seems like those who do agree feel very strongly about it.

JP: So do we.

GFB: We're not those guys that would strum guitars in the corner of parties, or got into music to get laid. Those people annoy the shit out of me. We started doing what we do as a means of coping with an outsider existence, those are the artists that always spoke to me.

The good 4-

Annihilator, Overkill, Testament, Kreator

To replace the big 4. Maybe replace either Overkill or Testament with Coroner, Death Angel or Metal Church.

Although the "big 4" is an awful term to begin with, and only exists because Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax were on sublabels for major studios, as opposed to considerably smaller independent labels like Metal Blade that would hold the other thrash bands back in the day. It was pointless elitism back in the 80's, and a dated reference now.

You know, if we were to do a greatest artists list, my one major request would be that we don't fap to the Beatles. There is no reason that Rubber Soul should be above The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, or that Sgt. Pepper should be above Pet Sounds or Freak Out!

I'd also say Kick for #1 or bust. But that would be a harder case.

Fucking finally. I'm glad they pulled a Journey/Foreigner. Everything I've heard since Promised Land was shit and Dedicated To Chaos was some of the worst dreck ever. And cabaret shows? Fuuuuuck that. I'm glad they booted his ass out (dude doesn't even take care of his voice anymore, so he sounds worse with each new album) and I'm very curious as to what they can do left to their own devices. My interest in the band is rekindled.
Title: Re: Favorite Artists
Post by: Avaitor on June 20, 2012, 05:15:02 PM
Yeah, I think it was a mercy firing myself. He seriously had one of the best voices in rock back in the 80's and early 90's, but he's blown it out over the years. I still love their earlier work, but their newer stuff is dreadful. Mindcrime II is so inferior to the original that it's not even funny, and American Solider? Cripes. That cover album was blah too.

I'm just surprised that they let Geoff go. He's the biggest name of the band, and it doesn't seem like it was his idea to leave.

Well, recently he was locking the other band members from the FB page when they wanted to advertise Rising West, while he still used it to promote his wine collection. Methinks that was part of the final straw.

I remember when the first two were still good before RBF went generic ska and Goldfinger went political. IIRC, RBF has no original members anymore except the lead singer. I can't even picture seeing them live without Scott, he was the only one on stage who said anything.

But, uh, you might have a good time. You should go.

Jon Lord, the keyboardist of Deep Purple, just died.

A shame. He was a gifted keyboardist. Of course he was a part of MK II, which contains a lot of the songs most people recognize, but he was also in MK III, which is my personal favorite lineup of the band. It still had Ritchie Blackmore and Ian Paice, but it also added in what I think was the best addition in the band's history- the one-two punch of David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes.

Regardless, it's a big loss.

Title: Re: Favorite Artists
Post by: Foggle on August 08, 2012, 03:35:52 AM
I would like to talk for a minute about one of the greatest bands I've ever heard; one I, unfortunately, only recently discovered: The Fun Lovin' Criminals. Are they rock? Hip hop? Funk? Blues? Lounge? Yes. They combine all of those genres, and it is an utterly beautiful fusion. This is the kind of stuff you listen to when you feel bad, because it lifts your spirits. But it's even better if you're already in a great mood. The musicianship is godlike and their vocalist is one of the best.

Now let's discuss albums, songs, that jazz. They've put out 7 records, and they're all fantastic, outside of their most recent release, which - ironically - is entitled Classic Fantastic. Now, don't get me wrong, it's still a great album, but it feels like the magic is missing at times. We'll get to that in a bit.

So their first album is called Come Find Yourself, and it's a phenomenal debut. Every track is greatness, from opening twangy rock/rap track The Fun Lovin' Criminal (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPdcWja7-5s) - which serves as a cool theme song for the band - to the Tarantino film-sampling single Scooby Snacks (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1u5Yir0E5Y) - which actually attained a fair amount of popularity in the 90's. It's incredibly solid from beginning to end, but it has some true masterpieces scattered throughout. The Grave And The Constant (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjH6XEzve9U) forever cemented my undying love for these guys, helped along greatly by the one-two punch of I Can't Get With That (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iypQvX49M8k&feature=related) and King Of New York (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2EX2HSIIc8). Later on, we get some slightly heavier tracks like Bear Hug (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sib4tOC4iUE) (an alternate version of the even better Blues For Suckers (http://www.4shared.com/mp3/Eaddxrg9/05_Fun_Lovin_Criminals_-_Blues.html)) and Crime And Punishment (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeRjNr1NKlc), both of which I absolutely adore.

Their second release, 100% Colombian, is better in every way, and that's saying something. It's smoother and more musically accomplished, and the vibes it gives off are far more wonderful. Up On The Hill (http://www.4shared.com/mp3/6utRZma0/01_-_Up_On_The_Hill.html) is lovely, and contains some fantastic sax. Back On The Block (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHq9s2DSNDs&feature=related) is one of my all-time favorite songs. We Are All Very Worried About You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBbISN-BbVw) is chilled out and beautiful. All For Self (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bP3vfBzI1BU) is perfect funk rock. And Big Night Out (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JOWMEWJcpA) is just loads of fun.

Next came Mimosa, which is pretty sweet for a collection of b-sides. Highlights include their cover of Couldn't Get It Right (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwX_-rj34A4) and the "Circa 1956" version of Bombin' The L (http://www.4shared.com/mp3/I5FqwM5m/04-Bombin_The_L__Circa_1956_Ve.html), a track from Come Find Yourself. Really wish they did more songs like that second one, because I love it waaaay too much.

Their fourth record, Loco, is a bit odd in that the opener, Where The Bums Go, is fucking awful and (thankfully) sounds nothing like the rest of the album. On the whole, it's a lot faster-paced than their earlier work, but still every bit as classic and groovy. The undeniably cool Swashbucklin' In Brooklyn (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iaZVrH_0HLs) tells a fairly humorous tale of a guy beating up street punks while dressed as a pirate, and it works on every level. Bump (http://www.4shared.com/mp3/srpIm9D6/07_-_Fun_Lovin_Criminals_-_Bum.html) is a super funky, very fun dance track. Microphone Fiend (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_utW45kIrBE) is an even better cover than Couldn't Get It Right, and There Was A Time (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qss9TAVNgiM) is simply magnificent despite featuring none of Huey Morgan's suave vocals. My Sin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7oSuhU6YQM8) is another great song, and probably the closest in style to their first releases on this CD.

Welcome To Poppy's took a while to grow on me, but eventually I came to love it. Too Hot (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4werZIRI_Oc) and Take Me Back (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57Q-vCbumAA) are as funky as it gets and seriously fantastic, but the rest of the album is more rock-oriented. And that's totally fine, since it made way for songs as amazing as Living On The Streets (http://www.4shared.com/mp3/_LpJop-A/03_-_living_on_the_streets_-__.html), Lost It All (http://www.4shared.com/mp3/5TNuhLk5/04_-_lost_it_all_-__03_01_.html), and Running For Cover (http://www.4shared.com/mp3/j50bp4fR/07_-_running_for_cover_-__04_2.html). The groove is still there, it's just a different kind of groove.

Then there's Livin' In The City. Outside of The Preacher (http://www.4shared.com/mp3/wd5KePE4/Fun_Lovin_Criminals_-_04_-_The.html) and Will I Be Ready (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pnb6DDbt64o), the latter of which being another of my all-time favorite pieces of music, I just straight-up didn't like this album on first pass. But it really is phenomenal in spite of my initial impressions. Gave Up On God (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fV_uR8q217s) is easily their most powerful track, City Boy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GSa3QeIUQo) is some of the best "city music" I've heard, and Mi Corazon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuJt2q-_CqE) is undeniably infectious.

There was a five year gap between the previous album and their newest, Classic Fantastic. This is apparently because they weren't legally allowed to release music during that period for some reason. It's a decent piece overall, though not especially classic or fantastic. Unlike their past releases, this one is basically a party album, with varying degrees of success. It's definitely good and a lot of fun to listen to, but it feels kind of phoned-in at times, and the only real standouts are Mister Sun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0O1STCZEihI) and Get Your Coat (http://www.4shared.com/mp3/7E22nlJA/13_-_Get_Your_Coat.html), the former of which being the lone track to truly approach the quality of their other records. They also put out a truly awesome cover of Right On For The Darkness (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjcMKjffafs) around the same period of time, and it's much better than any of the tracks on the actual album IMO.

And that seems to be all she wrote for the FLC. From what I hear, Classic Fantastic will probably end up being their final release. Not exactly the best note to end on, but their discography is so amazing that it almost feels greedy to ask for more. I can only pray that I'm fortunate enough to see them live someday.

----------

HOLY SHIT THAT IS A LOT OF WRITING. I hope you guys enjoyed reading my sophomoric thoughts on what may, in fact, be my favorite band of all time (it's kind of a toss up between them and THD). Please let me know if you liked the music I posted, because I really want to introduce other people to their excellence.

So this cover exists (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7St2Gz3PTc)

I'm on the fence about it right now. As muh as I love this band and their sound, I think I would have preferred a more traditional-sounding cover for the song. It's a little too out there for me, which I normally like. But here, I dunno.

I've been listening to a bit of The Cult lately. They really do kick ass. I remember that a couple of years ago, the band was performing at the club right by my house. It was only like ten or fifteen bucks and literally like a two minute drive. I nearly went, but some of my family from England came during the month, so I had to pass. I wish I didn't though.

I've laso been listening to Alice in Chains and Queensryche more than usual lately. The feud going on between Geoff and the band might be bad for PR, but damn if it didn't help with their album sales. I really need to add Empire to my collection.

Blahhh. One thing they've always been able to do fine is covers (well, almost... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BB7aUMjl7Xo)) but it feels off. Kirk is the best part of the whole thing, and he still sounds as bland as ever. James' voice does not fit this at all and Lars' drumming has really turned to shit over the years. It's obvious that they meant well here, but the band is well past their prime.

Which is crazy, since Maiden's been doing it for even longer, and their "Space Truckin'" cover is ace.

VH1 had a poll going up on their website to vote for 100 hard rock songs in order to help them rank a top candidate for a new TV special or something.

Guess what won? I bet you didn't expect this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xjtxCdMyQ4)

I don't know about you, but I think that it's pretty epic to see something like this win instead of the same old AC/DC or GNR songs.

QuoteGreen Day hasn't been "alternate" (as you put it) for quite a while; they broke into the mainstream with American Idiot.

I don't get why people say this(I've seen comments like this a few times recently), they have been mainstream as fuck since 1994.  Shit, Dookie is still their best selling record by far, and "Longview", "Basket Case", and "When I Come Around" are amongst their most well known songs(along with the American Idiot singles and "Good Riddance").

Green Day have pretty much been commercial since day 1.

Whatever.
Title: Re: Favorite Artists
Post by: Commode on October 16, 2012, 05:10:37 PM
Eh, I don't know about that.  They were never as punk as their contemporaries or the bands that they were influenced by, but they weren't really all that commercial until sometime after Dookie dropped, probably with their infamous Lollapalooza/Woodstock '94 appearances.
Title: Re: Favorite Artists

It's always seemed like they kind of were, but you know Green Day better than me, so I won't argue with you.

And either way, it isn't like commercialism is a totally evil thing. I like KISS, after all. :P

Well I mean, while Kerplunk sold extremely well for an independent record at the time, it's hard to say that they made the record for commercial reasons.  They were just kids back then, doing cross country tours in a Lincoln, performing in basements and sleeping on floors.  It's a little hard to call that commercial.

I personally have a hard time saying that the recording of Dookie was commercial, despite it being their major label debut.  The only reason they signed with Reprise was because of Rob Cavallo, they had turned down several offers from majors prior to that.  The amount of time that went into writing and recording that album was minimal, I think it was all said and done in just a couple of weeks, and they had no idea what that record would become.  After it did explode, yeah they totally went commercial, but at the same time they kind of went their own way with it.  And they kind of went in all sorts of directions this past decade.

The band has a very weird history, that's for sure.
Title: Re: Favorite Artists
Post by: Commode on October 16, 2012, 07:54:11 PM
And no, there isn't anything wrong with being commercial/on a major label.  If there was, then I'd have to hate Ramones records, Clash records, Social D records, Bad Religion records, Sex Pistols records...

Okay, I don't really care for that last one, but it ain't because they were commercial, I just don't think they were really that good.

I love how even on the NFL site, the editors are complaining that they chose Beyonce over Maiden, Foos or VH.

Those really would be a lot better choices. I know that after The Who's crappy performance, they've been going back to more recent and poppier acts, but hey, just because Daltry can't sing anymore doesn't mean that actually talented and proven arena giants should be given the shaft for Beyonce or whatever.

Well, this was actually made for VH1 Classic, the one that gets away with pretending that it's still the 80's, some obvious 90's tokens aside.

It's pretty much the only channel left that still cares about music though, but you still get lame stuff like this.

#1 was "Livin' on a Prayer".

I was actually worried that it was "Wanted Dead or Alive", but at least it wasn't that. Still not really hard rock, though. And "Black No. 1" at least got to be #2, even though it was clearly voted to be #1.

I approve.  The non-rock thing doesn't bother me too much, because as the years go by less and less traditional rock bands are going to go in it, instead more of this stuff is going to make it in.  Just wait until the year Britney Spears makes it in, it's going to happen.  At least if hip hop and pop and other stuff like that makes it in that it's PE and Run DMC, they are only like two of the most important acts to the evolution of the genre.

Anyway, I've been trying to think of albums that have both epic openings and closers. Iron Maiden and The Beatles typically have very good examples of both, and Powerslave and Sgt. Pepper are the first to come to mind for this. Cynic's Focus is another one.

Well, it depends on your definition of 'epic' is, but I think Led Zeppelin has some that count. Like, Zeppelin IV opens with Black Dog and closes with When the Levee Breaks.

1. Judas Priest - Painkiller
2. Megadeth - Peace Sells
3. Motörhead - Orgasmatron
4. Metallica - Battery
5. Iron Maiden - Fear of the Dark
6. Mercyful Fate and King Diamond (tied) - Into the Coven and The Invisible Guests
7. AC/DC - Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
8. Black Sabbath - Children of the Grave
9. Slayer - Angel of Death
10. Pantera - Walk

Yup, my opinions have definitely changed since I last posted here. Figure I might update this list as well as include favorite albums by them:

1. King Diamond - Abigail
2. Judas Priest - Painkiller and Stained Class (couldn't decide which one I like more so tied)
3. Mercyful Fate - Don't Break the Oath
4. Amon Amarth - Twilight of the Thunder God
5. Death - Human
6. Devin Townsend (including Punky Br?ster, Biomech, Devin Townsend, The Devin Townsend Band and Devin Townsend Project, but not Strapping Young Lad. Nothing against SYL, I just include them as separate entities) - Infinity
7. Blind Guardian - At the Edge of Time
8. Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast
9. Candlemass - Nightfall
10. Black Sabbath - Mob Rules

If there's any version of this album you need in your collection, the Immersion Box Set is the one. What I enjoy the most are the unpolished 1972 variant studio recordings before they got their final mix - it's like listening to the songs again for the first time. The early live performances are nice too.
I don't own it, but I'm thinking of picking it up.

From the top of my head, Mike Patton comes to mind as being one of my favs. First found out about him when he started to front Faith No More in the late 80s. The guy has an insanely wide vocal range and is a crazy motherphucker on stage. His vocal range had gained the attention of gaming and film companies for V/A work -- sometimes wonder if he's part demon. I don't like everything he does, but he certainly is entertaining.

I'm bored enough to rank how each of the following singers take on the song "Remember Tomorrow"-

Bruce Dickinson- The best. They don't do it live much anymore, but when they did, especially during the Early Years tour, he nails it.
Mikael Akerfeldt- I think Opeth's cover of this was the first song where he kept his clean voice all the way through, and it's incredible. A damn-near perfect cover.
Paul Di'Anno- Personally, I don't think Di'Anno's voice was meant for slower songs like this, but there is sincerity in his take of the song that does make it stand out on the original album. It's not my favorite version of the song, but it's a classic.
James Hetfield- 'nuff said.

Have I ever got into all the problems I have with That Metal Show on here? If I haven't, that's a shame, since I could go on and on, but for some reason, I still watch every episode.

Well, they have some fun features to check out, like this new lightning round where they ask all of their guests the same questions. One question that keeps on showing up in that, as well as in some of their recent interview videos, is which album said guest was the first that they bought with their own money. Check out how varied some of these answers are:

-Jason Newsted has 2- Jeff Beck's Blow by Blow and the first KISS
-Bobby Blitz from Overkill worked at a pressing where he was able to score a couple of copies of the first Black Sabbath
-Corey Taylor's first was Somewhere in Time (which I knew), while Stone Sour Josh Rand's was Stay Hungry (while I haven't heard of this guy until he was on)
-Pantera's own Rex Brown bought ZZ Top's Tres Hombres on 8-track. Makes sense, right?
-Sebastian Bach of Skid Row fame's first was... a 45 of CW McCall's "Convoy". Go figure.
-Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen got Deep Purple's In Rock
-Former Ozzy guitarist Jake E. Lee (who is in a band with Di'Anno now, of all things) got In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida first
-And Don Jamison, one of the show's three hosts, first bought Iron Maiden's debut

I just like random bits of trivia like this, even if I don't like the artists in question. How about you?

Edit: Besides these, I know that Lars and Yngwie both got Purple's Fireball before anything else.

I feel like I'm the oddball when it comes to music, especially when it comes to anime/game forums, especially since I'm no fan of metal.

Run DMC
Fat Boys
LL Cool J
Bone Thugs n Harmony
Michael Jackson
Kirk Franklin
Donnie McClurkin

I like a nice variety of people. There are more favorites, but I don't feel like making a long list post at the moment.

Ghosth have been touring with Opeth, Skeletonwitch, AIC and even Maiden and Slayer, but the only show we're getting for them is one with freaking A7X.

If the tickets are cheap enough, I might go anyway. But I'm not sure.

Same with Ghost. It sucks that I'm the only one who seems to listen to either act on here.

I got to see Demi live again tonight. This isn't a part of her upcoming tour, so instead of doing a full show she only did a few songs, most from her new album but also the singles from her last one and a killer cover of "Stay" by Rihanna, but it was a hell of an experience.

And Cher Lloyd opened for her. I don't know if it'd surprise you if I said that the songs she did for her new album sounded better than the ones I actually knew.

The ballots for this year's HOF inductees:

-Nirvana
-KISS
-Hall & Oates
-Linda Ronstadt
-Cat Stevens
-Peter Gabriel

I'm disappointed that Purple, Yes and 'Mats didn't make it in for another Gabriel induction, but at least we're getting KISS to shut up the fans.

I think it's funny that people are of course praising the decision the induct Nirvana(because they changed music and all), but are decrying KISS making it(because KISS was a direct influence on hair metal and all that crap that Nirvana single handedly eradicated in 1991).  Never mind the fact that KISS was a major influence on Cobain, but you're bitching that KISS doesn't deserve it because of all the crap they influenced?  Tell me again the music that Nirvana's influence is directly responsible for?  I'll give you a hint:  look at this photograph, every thing's so blurry, everyone's so fake.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=735577

It's like people don't understand the "Fame" part of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  It sucks, but Yes and The Replacements aren't really famous.  KISS and Nirvana are.

If that's the case then the Stooges and the Velvet Underground shouldn't be in there. Yes and the Replacements outsold them both.

The one I still don't understand when it comes to being inducted into the HOF is Maiden. They've sold more than enough and only get more popular as the years go by, and have influenced practically every metal band since they started, yet they still haven't got the nom.

But besides Maiden, have you guys been keeping up with Lemmy? His health has gone SERIOUSLY down in the past year, to the point that he had to cut his show at Wacken in half and Motorhead's upcoming Europe and US shows are slimming down a lot more than usual. Apparently he was diagnosed with diabetes about a decade ago, and it's been really starting to pull him down. Lemmy is pushing 70, but he's been fine for so long that it's surprising to see this happen to him.

He can't even drink Jack & Coke anymore, that's how bad he's getting. He substitutes it for wine now.

Well to be fair, from what I can, Springsteen's show was good if you're a fan, but I'm just not.

It's depressing how badly The Who sound now, though. I actually just saw them do a charity performance on TV last week, where they pulled out "Baba O'Riley" and I believe a brief Tommy medley, and while it sounded more rehearsed in a good way, they still just aren't the same.

No New York Dolls, Meat Puppets, or Replacements, but their ripoff bands all made it in. Don't ever tell me its not a popularity contest.

SRV is more than welcome. I'm surprised they remembered him since he didn't die recently and no commercials play his songs.

Well, we did pass the 25th anniversary of his death. I guess that's good enough, especially since Guitar World has been name-dropping him more than usual, and they seem to be a surprising influence on the Hall, along with Eddie Trunk.

Although I'm particularly happy that SRV and Kraftwerk made it on the long list this year, I do wish that Replacements, Purple and Yes also made a return as well. But nah, I guess Nine Inch Nails and NWA are more important.

Well yeah, of course they are, but I'm still iffy on rap making its way into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. Then again, NWA definitely had more of a rock-ish influence than, say, Tupac, so maybe I was wrong with my previous post.

I think it's safe to say Green Day and Nine Inch Nails are shoo-ins, as much as some people will protest it(the whole Hall is about fame after all, and inducting the most famous acts gets the Hall the most attention).  It's the other slots that'll be interesting to see.

On that Foo Fighters show that I mentioned in the other thread, the band was working with Steve Albini while in Chicago. Of course, he's best known as the producer of In Utero, but that's pretty far from my favorite work of his.

I'd have to say that if we're only talking his production, these are (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_YLvXPQLbs) two of (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5B07aejKGM) my favorite albums of his. Of course, I really appreciate Big Black as well, and I also admire his production work for The Jesus Lizard, Om, and Surfer Rosa.

FINALLY got the new Opeth, and I do really like it. They're furthering themselves from metal even more, to the point that they're almost straight prog, jazzy at some points, but it works. I love Orchid too, but if you want more stuff like that, there are tons of other bands out there going for their earlier approach. I approve of Opeth's growth.

I'm not sure if it's my AOTY, though. But I certainly liked it better than Agalloch's, which left me lukewarm at best.

Need to give the new Opeth and Weezer another listen. There's been so much new stuff this year that I've only been able to give each album a single listen, but I remember liking the new Opeth more than Heritage. I'd still prefer it if they went back to a Watershed-esque mix of the old stuff and the new stuff, because on the whole I haven't really found the 70s-proggy-jazzy-folksy noodling stuff all that interesting. But hey, it's their band, they can do whatever keeps them happy.
Title: Re: Favorite Artists

Yeah, I would be happy if Opeth kept their heavier sound around, but I'm just happy that their transition away from more traditional metal jams has sounded as good as it does. They're still just as experimental and big-sounding as ever

I got to see Clutch, Torche, and Lionize at the House of Blues tonight. It was a great day, especially since I spent a lot of the day hotel hopping at Disney. ;D

Lionize are new to me, but I dug their show pretty well. The musicians are decent, but I think my favorite part about their performance was the chemistry between the singer/guitarist and the pianist, who trade off quite well on each other. The music is definitely up the other band's alley, so it was a good fit. Good enough for me to consider trying their album out.

Torche were the band that I most wanted to see, and they did not disappoint. Their setlist was mostly based on Harmonicraft, but fans of the first LP (myself included, although I do prefer the latter) would have been pleased. They were just electric on stage, and brought most of my favorites to life with the same heavy force and pop tendencies with no problem. I just wish that I could have caught Andrew's guitar pick.

And Clutch are Clutch. If you've heard any of their stuff, you'll know what to expect. Not surprisingly, a lot of their fanbase are also big Motorhead fans. Actually, there was a moment when "Overkill" came on the loud speakers of the HOB which resembled when "Wrecking Ball" was being played during my Demi concert at the same venue. But yeah, if you like sludgey rock that skirts the line of metal and classic rock throwback, you'll love Clutch. They deliver live.

Although I have to admit, while I like most of their stuff, Clutch's music doesn't really stick with me on its own. I actually bought their new album while I was there (I've heard it a couple of times before, but decided to support the band and finally get a copy while I had the chance) and played it on the way home, and was surprised to realize that they only played one or two songs from it. Then again, Earth Rocker is almost 2 years old now, and they're just about to work on a new album. They actually played something from that tonight, and again unsurprisingly, it rocked.

Do you know what I really dig? Recorded studio performances. When an artist plays some of their material in a small studio, rather than a crappy recording of a concert performance with a lot of people in the way.

Take this for instance. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNFYoC7ZFe0) The quality is completely present, and the performance is excellent.

I'm watching the season premiere of That Metal Show (guilty pleasure, shut up), and in it, Geddy Lee is hinting that this new Rush tour will probably be their last big one, primarily since Alex Lifeson wants to focus on his family now. It sucks, but it is inevitable. And now, I'm definitely going to try to see it.

Yeah, it seems like Geddy's still up for touring and making music. And I'm sure that we'll get another Rush album, even if they won't match their last few tours for it.

Oh, but I will take Eddie Trunk's advice and listen to the album from Glenn Hughes and Jason Bonham's new (apparently already broken up) band. I liked their last group a good deal, their second album being a major improvement over the first.
Title: Re: Favorite Artists
Post by: Avaitor on March 06, 2015, 02:18:56 AM
I've been on a bit of an Aerosmith kick recently, so here's an albums rank for them.

1- Rocks
2- Toys in the Attic
3- Draw the Line
4- s/t
5- Get a Wing
6- Pump
7- Night in the Ruts
8- Permanent Vacation
9- Nine Lives
10- Get a Grip
11- Done With Mirrors
12- Rock in a Hard Place

... is there anything else?

But yeah, the first 5 albums are legends for a reason. Rocks is one of the best things from the 70's period, and it rocks from start to finish, with "Home Tonight" easily being their best ballad. Toys is equally as good, but I think I side with Rocks because I've heard "Walk This Way" one too many times. Draw the Line was considered a disappointment early on, but it's slowly been assessed that it's actually quite good itself. I know that when the band was doing full albums live before Steven's fall a few years ago, Joe Perry was vouching to try it. That would've been awesome.

The first is definitely rough around the edges, like most first albums, but "Mama Kin" might be the best thing they've ever done, period, and there are enough awesome songs on top of that to make it stand out. A little more than Get Your Wings, which isn't as special, but rocks well enough.

The band really was never the same after they got clean, but I have to admit that Pump is by all rights a good and important album. The rockers genuinely rock, while "Janie's Got a Gun" and "What It Takes" have more weight to them than most of their other ballads. The production is also stronger on it than Permanent Vacation, which just never sounded as right.

I'd say the top 6 are essential, but everything after that, not so much. I mentioned Permanent Vacation above, but the stuff in between it and Draw the Line are messy. Night in the Ruts definitely showed the fatigue some people accused Draw of. There were some good moments on it, though, certainly better than Rock in a Hard Place. The lack of Perry sure hurt the band, although they didn't really recover when he returned for Done With Mirrors, which I'd only call marginally better just for his and Brad Whitford's involvement. It's also worth noting that the only good song on RiaHP is the one with Whitford still on it, though.

And while Get a Grip was more successful, I do think that Nine Lives was their better 90's album. Both are overproduced and reek of studio writing too often, but "Pink" and the title track are awesome, while "Falling in Love" is better than any of Grip's ballads. But "Eat the Rich" has got to be their best post-reunion song, if you can handle the rest of the album's blandness.

But no, I can't really rank what comes after Nine Lives. Nothing I've heard from Just Push Plays entices me to give it a try, while the new one didn't impress me in the slightest when I first tried it out. I'm vaguely interested in Honkin' on Bobo, however. I'll probably end up listening to all of them if I keep this fascination going on, though.

Just Push Play has "Beyond Beautiful", and that song is excellent. And Bobo has "The Grind", which I also love.

So we almost got the iconic Megadeth lineup back, but... (http://www.metalinjection.net/latest-news/bummer-alert/menza-says-classic-megadeth-lineup-almost-reunited-but-mustaine-was-being-cheap)

I've heard rumblings about Nick and Marty coming back for a while, but those went away fast. This isn't remotely surprising.

Hey Avaitor, I know you are a fan of Kelly Clarkson (or, at least, I think you said you're a fan of some of her earlier songs). What do you think is her best song?

I dunno, anything on Breakaway, really. "Since U Been Gone" is the obvious choice, but it is as definitive of a statement as you can make.

Continuing the Kelly topic, who do you think is better between Kelly and Pink? The reason I ask is because... well, they have similar voices.

So I got to see Extreme last night, as a part of their Pornograffiti 25th anniversary tour. They did the whole album from start to finish, but it wasn't like seeing something like Classic Albums Live, where they do it note by note. The band messed around a little, and definitely had fun in between certain songs. One bit that holds true is how different it is for the band to do "More Than Words" so early in the set, since that's the kind of song you usually save for the end.

The band still has it, too! Gary's vocals were a little shaky at first, since apparently he was sick, to the point that he and Nuno let the audience sing about half of "More Than Words" with them. But before long, he was able to back into the game, and hit almost all the right notes near the end. And thankfully throughout, he was complimented by the greatest of Nuno Bettencourt and Pat Badger, who are just fantastic together. Their current drummer is also pretty good, and held his own. I'd prefer if the original or Mike Mangini was back, but they're all good, and the important members are still around.

I've heard that previously on the tour, the band just stopped after finishing the album, but they had a pretty lengthy encore where they knocked off a few songs. Mostly from III Sides to Every Story and the most recent, but with enough room for "Play With Me" and a great acoustic solo from Nuno. They also ended the core set with a brief take on "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", while Nuno and the drummer started the encore up with the opening of "Good Times, Bad Times". Edit: Apparently this is a separate tour from their last one, which was just Pornograffiti all the way through. This explains why the encore happened, then.

Gary did mention that they're doing a couple of other shows in FL, this time more akin to their traditional setlists, but I'm happy with just this concert. I'll keep an eye on if they come back around here in a year or so though, especially if they finally make their next album. Pornograffiti

The Fury of the Aquabats! will always be their best album. Every track on that one is great. Rock, ska, surf, and general weirdness rules the roost.

Also features the drummer from Blink 182.

I do tend to favor the era when their music had ska influences. But as far as individual songs so, my favorites might be "Stuck in a Movie" and Hi-Five City", both from Charge!!.

I would rate their albums as such:

Fury of the Aquabats!
Charge!!
The Aquabats Vs. The Floating Eye of Death!
The Return of the Aquabats!
Myths, Legends, & Other Amazing Adventures, Vol.2!
Hi-Five Soup!

Though I prefer their ska/surf stuff by a mile, Charge is an awesome album with some excellent songwriting like Nerd Alert!, Waterslides!, and Awesome Forces! even if it's a bit more mature than earlier stuff. None of them top Fury, even though Floating Eye and Return have some incredible songs (Ska Robot Army!, CD Repo Man!, It's Crazy, Man!, Giant Robot Bird-Head!, Lovers of Loving Love!, Hello, Goodnight!, are particularly great) they are not as consistently great as Fury. The last album was a real disappointment, though.

NPR is streaming the new Faith No More (http://www.npr.org/2015/05/10/404672919/first-listen-faith-no-more-sol-invictus), and it's bad. Not St. Anger or Risk bad, but just megaboring bad. It definitely sounds like a cash-in rather than the necessary return to form the band deserves.

But my local record shop is throwing a listening party for it next week, and if I have that night off, I might go. Because hey, free(ish?) pizza. And it might even grow on me by then!

Fuck it, I'll just listen to The Real Thing, Angel Dust and King For A Day on repeat.

I'm looking at my Aerosmith rankings from before, and some things would be done a little differently. Nine Lives should be higher, for one. That has some pretty good stuff on it, more than I gave it credit for. Also, Honkin' on Bobo is pretty decent (Nel's right, "The Grind" is great), and the last one is a little better than I remember, but still pretty disjointed. I also forgot about the Carrie Underwood duet- that makes Steven Tyler's country turn all the less surprising, huh?

Now I'm gonna do another discography rate- this time, for Type O Negative

1- October Rust
2- Bloody Kisses
3- Life is Killing Me
4- World Coming Down
5- Dead Again
6- Slow Deep and Hard
7- The Origin of the Feces

Bloody Kisses is the iconic album, and for the longest time it was my favorite, but in the past few years, I've been listening to a LOT of the band. In that time, I do think that its follow-up is stronger. Not a bad song in the bunch, but if I have a problem with it, it's that there might be too many songs, since I usually like my albums a little shorter. But if that's the biggest complaint I can come up with, it's pretty great. And at least half of it is among the smartest and heaviest material the band has dished out. But Bloody Kisses does have "Black No. 1" and "Christian Woman", two of the genre's all-time greats. And it's not like it's lacking in gems beyond them, but I think the problem is that the original version of the album doesn't flow all that well, and that's the one I own. The version they put out a few years later, with all the ambient tracks removed, the order changed a little, and a bonus track added, fits stronger. That probably ties with October Rust.

Life is Killing Me is a little underrated. Deeper fans recognize its greatness, but the previous 3 albums were more successful, and the next has more notoriety, being their last. But Pete has a lot of fun on this one, and some of his most irreverent and jamming tracks are here. I think that OR and BK have more notable tracks, but it might flow the best of all of their works.

World Coming Down was the first Type O album that I actually owned, and its random purchase helped me to really get into the band. That said, the production is off here. Despite some greatness abound, this somehow feels too clean AND too murky at once. On top of that, the Beatles medley is pretty disappointing, and the ambient tracks are mostly unpleasant. But "Everything Dies" is something everyone should hear.

And despite Dead Again being their very last LP, it's sadly pretty disappointing. Well, the performances are fine. It was around this time that Pete reunited with his original band, Carnivore, and he did help find the thrashy intensity that was present in their first 3 albums, but was being streamlined for a smoother doom sound during Bloody Kisses. That's actually kind of refreshing to here, but most of the album isn't all that impressive. I'd even go as far to say that one of the highlights for it would be the single edit for "The Profit of Doom". When I single out an edit, that's not a great sign. But the production isn't bad, and Pete's charm is still there. I'd just call it the weakest of the good LPs.

Although I do think that the first album has its merits, but it's too rough around the edges and coy for me. I did like Type O better when Pete dropped most of his Carnivore remains, since they're not really my thing (even if I agree with you, I can't really get into an act that literally screams their politics at me). It's better than Origin of the Feces, though- that's just unpleasant, no matter who you are. That is the intent, though.

I think the next band I'll do this for might be Van Halen. Maybe I can also try for Sabbath, Priest, or any of the big 4, as well.

I'll try one for Urge Overkill:

1. Exit the Dragon
2. Saturation
3. Rock & Roll Submarine
4. The Supersonic Storybook
5. The Stull EP
6. Early stuff

Exit the Dragon is one of the best albums I've heard that rails against the excesses of the RnR lifestyle while at the same time having a deep sense of soul and keeping the hard rock edge they were known for. The album is still probably their least popular, but man is it underrated. About the only track I could do without is Take Me-- everything from Jaywalkin' to Digital Black Epilogue is mesmerizing stuff. My personal favorites being Need Some Air, Honesty Files, Monopoly, and And You'll Say. They were one of the last mainstream bands I remember that understood the sound without having to subscribe to the attitude of the Rolling Stones. Personally, I like this album better than any of the Stones albums. Probably because this is more genuine than any of them.

Saturation is their most popular album, and it's their best pure rock n roll album. It skewers both the rock n roll lifestyle while embracing the big sound that originally put them as Cheap Trick's successors (they remind me more of early Big Star, though, plus I like them better than CT) and memorable hooks. Sister Havana, Positive Bleeding, and Dropout are easily some of the best rock songs of the decade. It deserved every bit of success it had, though it doesn't have near the depth of EtD. In the end, it's one of my favorite albums of the '90s.

Rock n Roll Submarine came out 16 years after Exit the Dragon, and it shows. In a good way. The band is clearly older and more experienced, which helps with their sound and lyrics as they manage to balance their rock n roll sound with deeper lyrics. The only thing that holds this album back to me is that it feels a bit like they wanted to prove themselves more than just write good songs. I mean, She's My Ride is a loud rocker, but there's nothing to it-- it's B-side material at best. Quiet Person is a slower song, but it doesn't work anywhere near as anything on EtD since the lyrics are so shallow, nor does it work as well as the final track, Touched to a Cut, which works far better. However, unlike EtD, this album brings back some of the humor of Saturation, which is highly welcome. Mason/Dixon, the title track, and The Valiant, my three favorite tracks, are great rock n roll as is the rest of the album. It was glad to see them back.

The Supersonic Storybook was the album where they came into their own and locked down their style. About the only problems I have are the couple of forgettable songs in the back half and that its missing the production that gives their sound such a kick. It's pretty thin here. But the album is still well worth hearing, which is more than I can say for their early stuff. The Candidate and Emmaline in particular showed what they were really capable of before they probably even knew.

The Stull EP only suffers because it's an EP. The handful of songs are easily better than TSS and almost to par with Saturation, but there are only a handful of them, and two of them are covers. That said, it's essential to any UO fan for a reason.

The early stuff includes their first two albums and a noise punk EP. It's typical smirking indie stuff without any real cleverness, hooks, or genuine emotion. This stuff didn't age well when I first heard it, I can't imagine how well it aged to people who heard it when it came out. They got much better with maturity and adulthood, and I don't see any real reason to go back to any of this. As for quality, well, they got better with each release, but not to any real important extent. They only got to worth remembering with TSS.

Let's try something here. I haven't done a music list in a while, so how about my favorite albums from the MTV age. That means from the early 80's-mid aughts, each with a couple of songs with serious video recognition, that are as fun to listen to mow as they were new. And yeah, I'm mostly sticking to big releases, but I'll try to add a couple of familiar curveballs in as well.

Thriller (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zi_XLOBDo_Y)/Bad (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzZ_urpj4As)- You guys should all know the impact and quality of Thriller. How it helped to give black artists more play on MTV, caught virtually everyone alive in awe with its tight production and songwriting. That it was able to get some of Eddie Van Halen's sickest work in one take, and that Michael could jab with one of the biggest names in music ever completely naturally (okay, "The Girl Is Mine" is in hindsight pretty cheesy, but their spoken parts feel genuine). The scope of the title track's video. Then Bad came and equaled Thriller in some ways, even surpassing it in enough to make it stand on its own. Michael will still have some solid stuff in his last few albums (less so Invincible, though), but nothing after could top his 80's work.

She's So Unusual (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdQY7BusJNU)- Obviously Madonna had a much longer period of success, but she was never able to make an album nearly as consistent as Lauper's debut. Nearly every song on here is a well-made blast, even down to its slower moments. It took off right away with the 80's-tastic "Girls Just Want to Have Fun", but that's only the tip of the iceberg.

1984 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdQY7BusJNU)- It really is a shame that videos weren't as much of a thing during Dave's earlier days with the band. They were able to score some success before his infamous split with the act, most notably with this landmark. A lot of people consider 1984 a sellout move that signaled the band's end, but I mean, have you listened to it lately? It's great rocking stuff, and even "Jump" is a hell of a pop song.

Kick (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyZU4iNRdsM)- Kick is one of those albums that tries a dozen different things out, and totally succeeding at each experiment. It's at once sexy, sleazy, demoniac, relaxed, energetic, and elated, sometimes switching its emotive status right next to each other with no issue. And if there's one thing you could say about this Michael, it's that the camera loved him.

Pump (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkGfPrst29Y)- Of Aerosmith's comeback albums, there is no doubt that this is their best, and I'd go as far as to call it among the best hard rocks. It just feels so big, with even the throwaway songs having this larger than life attitude to them. The rockers like "Love in an Elevator" and the linked track are sharper and more exciting than almost any other rock songs you'd hear on the radio at the same time, while "What It Takes" and "Janie's Got a Gun" feel more sincere and breaking than most other ballads, from then or even the band's later material. The latter, especially made a rightfully big splash in how it tastefully tackled its subject.

Full Moon Fever (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdRViFCvvUo)- What can I say, Tom's my guy, and he's another artist that the camera loves. Literally since the channel's first day, he remained a presence, which more or less peaked with his biggest album. Despite being a solo release, most of the Heartbreakers are here, as Petty delivers his typically personal lyrics on top of a heavy touch to his music. I actually prefer his next solo album, 94's Wildflowers, but there's something magical about Full Moon Fever that also requires a place in everyone's collection.

The Real Thing (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4tsGWdarHc)- Okay, so "Epic" was the most well-known track on here, by a crazy notion. But "Falling to Pieces", which does have a cooler video, is the one that took home VMAs, and is still fairly recognizable in its own way. In truth, Faith No More's breakthrough had a few hits, and while I wouldn't call it their best, there's enough of the band's eclectic style throughout to qualify it as their first complete success in every meaning of the word. If you can handle a little heaviness in between some believable funk, rap, and a little jazz, you need to hear this all the way through.

Empire (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHapAsmvGEU)- You know that there are videos for the majority of songs on Mindcrime? But I believe that was for the tape, and that you wouldn't see "Eyes of a Stranger" or "I Don't Believe in Love" that often on TV. "Silent Lucidity", though? Empire doesn't totally match the previous album in terms of quality, but it's still Queensryche at their prime, smart and tight as hell, but heavy enough for those wanting more. And the album's handful of hits had gorgeously-shot videos that received various levels of attention. Enough to make it on here.

Weezer (Blue) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHQqqM5sr7g)- Nostalgia? Yeah, kind of, but this really did, and still does feel like a change of pace from rock at the time, almost seeming like a good halfway point between Pearl Jam and Pantera. Rivers became an unlikely face in the same era of Cobain, Corgan, and Cornell as he switched the tables from tired angst to his nerdy pleasures, and enough relatable anxiety to still feel relevant to the day's audience. And the band's dorky exterior did help to make them stand out. Just check out how they mesh with the blue screen here, for instance.

CrazySexyCool (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4tsGWdarHc)- Their first album got the ball rolling, and FanMail is probably more notable to slightly younger fans, but to my tastes, TLC got it down in the second LP, still the best girl group album ever made. It's a silky smooth R&B album, heavy on aesthetic and heart that made it a perfect compliment to the mid-90's. Another disc where just about every element works.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3_dOWYHS7I)- As great as the Fugees are, I think Hill's first, and to date, only solo album is the best thing she's associated with. She brilliantly sings and raps throughout with a tenderness and edge that keeps it totally real, and the production perfectly compliments her. I'd place it among the best hip-hop LPs of them all.

Stankonia (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVehcuJXe6I)/Speakerboxxx/The Love Below (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xI5NQ-0Ubfs)- Their first couple of albums are more experimental and just as smart, but Outkast didn't officially mark their name to legendary status until Stankonia hit, which kept their integrity with massive success that is still felt. And while the end was nigh with their follow up, to the point that 3000 and Big Boi split their sides up, its impact was undeniable. Dre still had some more things to say before going on his own, while Boi showed that his genius was equal, going for a successful funk sound that can't be forgotten. It's one of the last Diamond-certified albums released for a reason.

Very good choices. They pretty much epitomize the era they were made in. I'd probably add Morning Glory for Britpop: only Parklife comes close to how much it epitomizes a movement.

I think Infinite Sadness, Nevermind, and the Black Album were probably up there influence-wise, but I just don't like them. Some people would argue Ten or Dookie, but they were radio albums, their videos were not very big or influential. I'm also of the mind that a lot of Pantera's popularity is revisionism: they were not big even at their peak. But if we're talking stuff we liked from that era, then your choices are much better for it.

Also, I like individual tracks from Outkast, but I've never been able to sit through a whole album.

Yeah, if we're talking icon status, all of those would require a mention, and honestly, Mellon Collie could make it on my favorites depending on the day of the week. Today, meh.

Again, I kind of cheated with a couple of my choices, but if I was to make a list of the most iconic albums from that era, I think that you should keep the MJ's, 1984, Pump + Get a Grip, and CrazySexyCool would all deserve to be there.

I do want to note that if I was to pick any grunge album on here, it would either be Dirt or Superunknown. And as someone who has listened to a lot of the black album, I couldn't tell you a thing about any of the videos from it.

Oh, and I almost put Kelly Clarkson's Breakaway on here, but it kind of crosses that line from where music videos weren't becoming as noticed, when MTV was increasingly finding less room for them, and Vevo still wasn't a thing yet. But I remember seeing the title track's video a lot in between school, so I think even that could have fit.

I went to two concerts this weekend, and had a pretty good time at both.

On Saturday, I finally got the chance to see Ghost, and holy shit, is this an experience. There really is more to the band than the gimmick- they care about their music, and every thing adds to a great time. Papa is an insanely talented singer, and the Ghouls do a good job of holding their own to his charisma. The lighting is some of the best that I've seen at a show, too, perfectly fitting whatever is playing. Like when Papa changes costumes, it gives him a transparent look that adds to the effect. And then there's "Monstrance Clock", which is just a perfect closer.

If I have one problem, it's that this seems to be a shorter show than a lot of their other shows from this tour. But I still feel like they did mostly everything that I wanted to hear, so I can't complain. This was also super heavy on the latter two albums, with only a couple of Opus Eponymous tracks, and of course "If You Have Ghosts". But I actually do prefer their more recent stuff (Infestissumam has a pretty mixed reception from what I notice, but it's probably still my favorite), so I didn't mind.

And the opening act, Purson, was pretty cool. They clearly reach for a 70's aesthetic, which is presented well in not just the music, but their look- the bass player could easily fit in with Blue Oyster Cult on his beard alone, and the frontwoman/guitarist rocked a pair of bell bottoms. Their set also had a bit of a 70's feel with some obvious tech issues, but the band seemed strong enough to make it work anyway.

Also, some of my friends in our group got to meet both bands after their sets. INCLUDING Ghost without their masks. They have a very strict no pictures rule, but the guys autographed their tickets to prove that this happened. If I had known that they were sticking around for that reason, I would have stayed. Damn.

Then I went to Failure, Hum, and Torche's show last night. I saw Torche earlier this year, just before their new album came out. I really liked their live presentation and dug the album enough to go out of my way to see them again, and they sound as good as ever. Except for some horrible technical difficulties plaguing the band. Their amps were constantly acting up, and the lightning and acoustics were off, but the band remained professionals throughout and played their set as is. This wasn't their best day, but they still put out a solid show, mostly sticking to the two most recent albums and nailing it.

Things were running better for Hum, although the PA system was blasting "2112" when they were just about to come out, and not just the Overture- by the time the band was out and ready to play, the song was about halfway through. But they did a great show as well, sticking to the best of their material. Of course "Stars" (their unexpected hit back in the day) was a big showstopper, but the audience seemed to be happy to hear everything, even getting a request out. It really felt like they were away for too long, since the reception to them were great.

I had to miss Failure due to an emergency, but I bought their newest album as a compromise and will try to see them the next time they come back here. I mainly went for Torche, anyway. I do hope that they can get the rights to their classic albums back, though, since the label isn't interested.

Next up, I'm going to an autograph signing event for the Winery Dogs on Saturday. They're doing a show later that night, but I have to miss it. I mainly just want a chance to meet them, primarily Kotzen. And I'm trying to agree on the best seats to see Maiden in my price range with another group of friends, but that show isn't until February (first concert of the tour, holla).

Best Urge Overkill songs:

1. Nite and Grey - To me this sums up their whole sound and purpose as a band. Though they didn't start off as what they became, and I'm not sure how much of this song was originally written to be serious, it certainly became serious as the band went through exactly what they weren't supposed to by chasing the fame drug and falling into darkness themselves. Not to mention the actual drugs. Not to mention the bluesy riff, my favorite guitar solo (perfectly thematic, builds, drops, and falls apart, at the right times) and pitch perfect vocals. This is their best song, even though it's fairly unknown.

2. Digital Black Epilogue - An 8 minute song hat never gets old. This is the finale on their best album, Exit the Dragon, and it remains their crowning achievement as a band. A song about death but full of wonder and excitement without irony, it always gets me pumped when listening to it. Not to mention, there's a theme throughout Exit the Dragon of random feedback bursts between songs that sound as terrifying as they are beautiful that sound out of place until they return at the end of this song to close out the album. Wrapping it into the theme of death it makes perfect sense of those earlier static bursts (taking place after songs about honesty, in the middle of a song about repeating mistakes, and the second to last song about truth) which give those songs extra kick.

3. Positive Bleeding - In my mind, this song should have been a big hit. Exciting, catchy, and with hilarious lyrics, this song takes Cheap Trick down at their own game. This song also has a cascade of feedback at the end, despite being on their earlier album, Saturation, which makes me wondr if this was meant to tie into the next album more than they originally thought it would. Anyway, who can resist singing along to a lyric like "I can bleed when I want to bleed"?

4. Back On Me - This is probably their most inspiring song on Saturation about believing in dreams despite tremendous pressure against you, but it also has a surprising solo to close the song out that really sells the song. I'm kind of surprised this wasn't big on alternative radio back in the day, but that's probably because it isn't whiny or 2edgy4u.

5. Monopoly - An acoustic pop song about treating life as a game, it's one of the catchiest and most fun songs they ever made. Soaring chorus, light touches of piano, it manages to be the only song on Exit the Dragon that manages to fit the heavier themes while keeping a lighter sound. And for that it's one of their best.

6. The Break - This was the first single from Exit the Dragon, and it's hard to see why it was chosen. Despite the Stones-ish riff, it's a pretty dark song about falling into darkness and trying to find a way out. It's near the beginning of the album so it's not quite as hopeful as other songs that come later, but it certainly epitomizes their mix of 90s alternative, classic rock, and weightier material. I just don't think it should have been the lead single. I would have personally went with "Need Some Air" instead.

7. Honesty Files - A song about stumbling to the light from the darkness and finding honesty where you would never expect it, this song is always the one I think of when I think of Exit the Dragon. The main riff is amazing, as is the ending, not to mention the burst of feedback at the end (as mentioned in Digital Black Epilogue) perfectly caps it off.

8. Bottle of Fur - First of all, that opening and that riff. Does that not scream Rock n Roll? Second of all, that solo. So exciting. This might be one of their more straightforward songs about falling into depression after losing a girl, but it's one of the most exciting on Saturation. The constant mood shifts are perfectly constructed and placed, too.

9. The Valiant - I know this list has been concentrated on their two best albums but, well, they're their two best albums for a reason. This song, on their most recent album, however, is one of their best. As the title states, the song is about staying valiant in the face of overwhelming odds and how things are not as bad as they seem. This could only have been written by a band that has been through the wringer, which gives it a lot of honesty and power.

10. Stull, Part 1 - The title track on their EP probably freaks these guys out nowadays. You see, this was constructed to be like an old Blues song about meeting and accepting death while being fairly tongue and cheek like they were before Exit the Dragon. However, listening to it after everything that happened since they released this EP makes this hard to swallow as a joke song anymore. It's kind of creepy as it is, but age and experience has only made it creepier and a bit more wondrous in the process. I wonder if they still play this song, since it has to be hard to do without playing it straight.

Honorable mentions:

Sister Havana
Need Some Air
The Mistake
Goodbye to Guyville
The Candidate

Look at this relic that I just dug up! (http://www.toonzone.net/forums/threads/25-albums-from-my-generation-worth-listening-to.5114941/)

How much of this do I still agree with? Well, let's see.

Amesoeurs- I was actually listening to some of this earlier today! I do really like what Neige has done with Alcest since he dedicated his full time to them, as well as his one album with Lantlos, but this is still his best work to my tastes. Yet, I don't want him to get the band back for another album. What they did together was perfect and isn't likely to be matched. But I wouldn't mind if he got Audrey Sylvain on stage for a song or two.

Ashes Against the Grain- Yeah, okay. Agalloch is still one of my favorite bands, even if their most recent album was a disappointment- that was a solid B album for an A+ band. I think that I prefer the album in between that and Ashes, but I don't mind that I went with this one.

Bloody Kisses- I wrote about Type O here not long ago, and I stated that while my appreciation for the band has only increased in recent years, I think that I prefer their breakthrough's follow-up. But it's hard to argue that Bloody Kisses had a surprisingly big impact on the scene at the time, and that it deserved every accolade it received. It must have been insane to see "Black No. 1" appear on MTV, and to feel the reaction it received.

De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas- Undeniably an important album, not just for metal, but music in general. But I don't really listen to black metal all that much anymore, and I would easily swap this out for something else today.

Dopesmoker- Holy Mountain is easily a better album to give to get someone into Sleep, but whenever I feel the challenge of dedicating an hour of my time to Dopesmoker? It's still worth it. I don't regret putting this on here, since there still isn't really anything else like it.

Focus- I'm not sure if you guys know this, but this is my favorite album not made by Iron Maiden. Every time that I listen to it, I pick up something new. And while I love the band's sophisticated integration of death metal with jazz and latin, I don't regret their later day descent into straight fusion at all. The only thing that disappoints me is their recent break up.

Here We Go Again- Demi has released 3 albums since this, and while I think she's released better songs than most of what HWGA contains ("Skyscraper" and "Cool for the Summer" have got to be her best singles) and she has only grown as a vocalist, she hasn't come close to making a stronger album than this. The general lack of studio hack collaborators helps to make HWGA feel genuine, just as the contributions from John Mayer and the non-legendary John McLaughlin fit well with her style. I'm not ashamed to say that this is one of my favorite pop albums.

Houdini- This is probably still their strongest album, but I won't lie, I'd probably trade the Melvins out with a more modern, sludgey release if I had my say today. I still have a lot of respect and admiration for Buzz and the boys, but I just haven't listened to them as much lately.

I Get Wet- Fair enough, but my admiration for AWK comes more from his persona than his music.

Ill Communication- Not the Beasties' best, but their strongest made since I was born. I can live with it.

In the Aeroplane Over the Sea- This is a good album, but I honestly just don't listen to it at all anymore. I heard a little bit of it at a bagel shop about a year ago, and I still recognized it as well-made, but I didn't feel a strong desire to hit up my collection again. That's my general reaction to NMH at this point.

Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating Into Space- This one, I can still get behind, though. I just dig Jason Pierce's style a lot, but most else of what he's done hasn't resonated with me nearly as much as this has.

Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven- Beautiful, beautiful music, but GY!BE's lengthy, layered tracks are not easy to listen to on a regular basis.

Love Comes Close- Cool, but I haven't really thought about them, or this kind of music in years. The last I checked, they pulled out a b-side collection, but haven't done another album. Ah well.

Loveless- Is this really from my generation if I wasn't even a month old when it came out? lol, but this is still a dynamite album, and more or less ties with Souvlaki as the best shoegaze has to offer. I still pull it out decently regularly, too.

The Marshall Mathers LP- No one's going to deny that Slim is an insanely talented rapper, because they would be dead wrong to do so. But considering how rotten he can be as a person, I get a bit ashamed to call myself an Eminem fan nowadays. This is still his best, and among the best that hip-hop has to offer in the past 15-20 years, but I'd probably switch this out for another artist today, Probably someone slightly less misogynistic, like Gambino.

A Matter of Life and Death- I'll come out and admit it- The Book of Souls is my favorite Iron Maiden album. And probably my favorite album period, at this point. But that didn't exist yet, and Matter was by far their best material in recent years at that point. Since it wouldn't be fair to have them both on here, I'd swap it out for Book of Souls, but if there was room for both, I would be happy.

Ocean Beach- I actually had the chance to pick this up for cheap a while back. But I still passed, and I only kind of regret it.

Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space)- No problem here. This is still among my favorite hip-hop LPs.

Sea Change- I know of one person who wasn't happy with this one's inclusion, but okay, while I admit that Odelay is a better representation of Beck's ouevre, I still like Sea Change better. Although I recently put Morning Phase on again, and I think that it might be my new favorite of his.

The Sunset Tree- As you can tell, I've been falliing out of indie acts lately, but I do really still like the Mountain Goats. I just dig John Darnielle's style a lot. That said, Tallahassee is my favorite of theirs, and I would have included it here if I wasn't going to do one of my album reviews for it. So I went for my next favorite at the time, which was this. I think that they've been on a major roll with their last few, though (check how Beat the Champ made my top 10 this year for proof), so I severely doubt that this would be my representation for Darnielle's act.

Swoon- I like SSPU's following album more, their first about the same, but maybe a little less, and their first EP the best, but I actually haven't heard their newest yet. I am getting it for Christmas, though, and I might get to finally see them live about a month later. And I'll always have a lot of love for the band behind "Panic Switch", no matter where my musical tastes otherwise venture.

Toxicity- I still stand by this, but yeah, if I made this today, I'd probably switch it out for either of Ghost's more recent LPs if I couldn't find room for both. This is still one of the most important releases from my time, though.

Tragic Kingdom- Let me say this- yes.

Weezer- Pinkerton was a masterwork of angst, and their latest was as close to a 5-star album as they've pulled out in a long time, but something still remains as special for the band's first album. Rivers' uncompromising nerdiness in his lyrics, the band's excellent range of musical influences, the timeless production, it all just fits. As inconsistent as his mid-period material may be, I'm proud to be alive since Rivers Cuomo made his impact in the music industry.

So yeah, I still like and stand by a lot of my inclusions, but I'd definitely do things differently today. Albums I would like to find room for:

-Faith No More Angel's Dust or Mr. Bungle's California (if not both)
-Childish Gambino's Because the Internet
-Tom Petty's Wildflowers (WHY WASN'T THIS HERE ALREADY????)
-Opeth's Blackwater Park
-Deafheaven's Sunbather
-Lauryn Hill's The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill

It's official- Neil Peart is retiring. (https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/general_music_news/rush_drummer_neil_peart_i_am_retiring_from_music.html)

I feel bad because I never got the chance to see Rush, but it seems like he's happy to do this, so I can't really blame him. It's sad, but if Neil's happy, good for him.

Oh, and I also forgot to post about Scott Weiland's death. I feel a little bad about that, but at the same time, I was never really a fan of his music, and I'm sure that you all have heard about it. But it is really sad.

Most of Motorhead's albums are out of stock on Amazon, and Ace of Spades is their current top-selling metal album.

Wow though, it feels so unreal that he's gone.

I'm honestly more hurt by Lemmy's loss, mainly since Lemmy was reportedly cleaner, but it's hard to deny Bowie's impact.

I'm listening to the new Megadeth, and it's pretty good. I didn't like their last 2 at all, and got tired of Endgame fast, but this feels like a better version of that one- a return to their thrash heyday, with better musicians on hand.

That said, Mustaine's recent problems are still present here- he's having a hard time adapting to singing with a deeper rasp, his conservative viewpoints are stinking up his likability and lyrical content, and he's basically given up being an interesting rhythm guitarist to match the lead. If Kiko Loureiro wasn't such a good shredder, though, that would be more of an issue. Chris Adler also proves to be a hell of a drummer, even though Lamb of God still isn't my thing, and it's just nice to have Junior back with them. I would have been curious to hear how this would have turned out with the 90's lineup, but I dig it anyway.

Besides, maybe they will come back next year for Countdown's 25th anniversary. Marty has expressed some interest in a brief reunion, and I would definitely be down to catch a tour with that lineup.

Bought the bonus track version. Working my way up to it. I binge-bought most of Megadeth's discography over the past month (I only owned Rust in Peace, Countdown to Extinction and Super Collider) and am starting from the beginning.

It's official- Aerosmith are doing a farewell tour (http://loudwire.com/steven-tyler-confirms-aerosmith-2017-farewell-tour/).

This has been in the cards for a while, and although it's sad to see a band that has been an important part of my life call it a day, I think now is a good time. I'd rather the band end on their own terms than split at the last minute when one of the members dies.

Best Run-DMC albums:

1. Raising Hell
2. Tougher Than Leather
3. Run-DMC
4. King of Rock
~
5. Back From Hell
6. Down With the King
7. Crown Royal

The first four albums are great, but their later stuff just isn't. They tried to be like everyone else and it hurt them. Also, Crown Royal isn't even really a proper album since DMC is barely on it and it's filled with (really dated) guest stars that make it sound out of sync with the rest of their stuff. But those first four albums? So great. I can listen to them over and over and never get bored.

It should be noted that I like Tougher Than Leather WAY more than most people. On some days I might even consider it their best album. Run's House is the best hip hop single of all-time, in my opinion.

The Harvard Library has begun archiving important hip-hop records (http://2dopeboyz.com/2017/01/27/kendrick-lamar-lauryn-hill-nas-a-tribe-called-quest-harvard-archive/). The first 4 to be inducted are:

-A Tribe Called Quest's The Low End Theory
-Nas' Illmatic
-The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
-Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Buttefly

A great first selection, IMO.

Excellent picks, though I unfortunately haven't really been able to get into Kendrick. Would love to see them induct Ice Cube's Death Certificate, The Coup's Steal This Album, Jurassic 5's Power In Numbers, Wu-Tang's Enter The 36 Chambers, and Public Enemy's Fear of a Black Planet (among many others) in the future.

It was really shocking and unexpected to hear about it. I never got to see Soundgarden perform live as well so that's another band along with Type O Negative I love that I'll never see live. The grunge dynasty is almost gone. Once King Buzzo and Eddie Vedder go, it's over.

Chester Bennington of Linkin Park committed suicide. I haven't felt hit this hard in a while. Depression really sucks. Linkin Park in my view was the only numetal band worth a crap because they at least changed up their music at times, and their stuff like Hybrid Theory and Reanimation are great to me even now.

RIP. :(

Sadly, a LOT of Chester's songs are going to be harder for people to listen to. Numb, Crawling in My Skin, and their latest one Talking to Myself especially aren't going to be easy listens for a while.

Not going to lie, I am still hurt by this. Its a silly little thing in the grand scheme of things, but Linkin Park came out while I was in high school and it always made feel better when I was in a bad mood. Didn't have a bad time in high school at all, but my home life could be a bit much at times due to certain issues. Linkin Park in my eyes represents the positive side of the Y2Ks/Aughties/Noughts/00s/New Millenium/whatever the crap the last decade is referred to in the future.

Was never a Linkin Park fan but after Chester's death I listened to the latest LP album and I like it, perhaps only because it's so different from what I had come to think of as the standard for Linkin Park music.  Some of the album veered a little too much into the 21 Pilots direction(not sure that's really a fair comparison since 21 Pilots are awful, but it's the closest I can think of in the current music environment).  Sure wasn't worth the hate it got upon initial release, though I have noticed people changing their tune a bit now that he's dead.

Losing Tom Petty hurts. I've been listening to him my whole life, and I tried to see him back in May, but that wasn't able to work out. It's crazy, too- he was doing a big tour this summer, and besides a brief sickness, he seemed perfectly fine and full of life.

This shows that you shouldn't take anyone for granted. You never know what will happen the next day.
