Title: The Top Ten Thread
Post by: Spark Of Spirit on February 06, 2012, 02:26:24 PM
Nothing is more fun among fans of music than making pointless lists that don't really matter to anyone but the fan, yet that never stops them from making them. "Top 5 best songs to listen to in the dentist chair", "Top 25 songs of the underground 70s", "Top 10 songs you wish would die"... The possibilities are endless! So I decided to make a thread dedicated to such lists, either ones you find out in the internet or just ones you want to make yourself, share them with the rest of the AR community. I'll start with one myself:

Top 5 Instrumentals You've Never Heard

5. Madness - One Step Beyond (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOJSM46nWwo&feature=related)

How these guys never made it huge in the Americas is beyond me. Their first album is a masterpiece, as is this title track If you have the chance be sure to check out the entire album  that even includes a ska cover of Swan Lake (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-utkYnIV1_k) that is also brilliant. Whether you're a fan of ska or not, I have yet to meet anyone who didn't adore this album, and while they have several other great pieces (seriously, they are the most consistently great bands of the late 70s and 80s) they still have yet to match the sheer energy of this one.

4. Brian Setzer - Go Go Godzilla! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mo7VWqcqJ3M)

Yes, he's still the most underrated rock n roll guitarist alive. If this one song doesn't convince you, I don't know what will.

3. The Go! Team - Everyone's A VIP To Someone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_UFPU_v_iE)

While this band mostly deals in instrumentals, it's this closer song from their debut that always stands out to me as no one (not even this band) does much music like this anymore. It's pretty low key, but still manages to build in scope to quite a large sound that makes it one of my favorite songs.

2. The Ventures - Dick Tracy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8G0KFogjJhw)

I could have included any song that's NOT Walk, Don't Run so I included my favorite. One of the earliest instrumental bands and one of my favorites, keep in mind this song was recorded when the Beatles were tying to make stuff like Rubber Soul and it's quite the contrast to that stuff. In my mind it was this song that invented the whole surf music + spy theme that has been prevalent in decades since and you can easily see why. This is one ripping rocker.

1. Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet - Who's Afraid Of Alyson Hymer? / Wow Flutter Hiss! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieijkT2C0vg&feature=related)

A Canadian band that was probably overlooked because they don't tend to sing in their songs, but they offered short and punchy instrumental pieces that manage to evoke great atmosphere with only three instruments. The song there is a perfect example of music you'd never hear on the radio, especially in the early 90s. Few bands were able to do it as well as these guys did, check out how the song changes tones at least 3 times. They unfortunately only had three albums before they broke up, but the first two alone are well worthy of adding to anyone's collection, and the third isn't bad if you like more experimental stuff. If you want to hear more check out these:

5 American, 6 Canadian (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQCc4wK7k6w&feature=related)
D. Tour (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPHpjjxKn8c&feature=related)
Siesta Cinema (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tWjA-2KtnE&feature=related)
Our Weapons Are Useless (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWWhld64Pv4&feature=related)

I also didn't get to list stuff from Dick Dale and some of my favorite all time instrumentals, but this is stuff you've probably never heard so for that I think it's a pretty cool list. How about you guys?

I'm working on like 5 different lists now, and I just came up with a new one involving music that must take top priority. It might have to go to tz, in fact.

Top 5 and unordered, but whatever. My best side 1, track 1's.

Honorable mentions go to practically every Beatles and Maiden opener that isn't "invaders. They have far too many great ones to name.

I guess mine would be:

T. Rex - Mambo Sun
Flamin' Groovies - High Flyin' Baby
Dick Dale - Surf Beat
Lynyrd Skynyrd - I Ain't The One
Madness - One Step Beyond
Beach Boys - Wouldn't It Be Nice
The Jam - Art School
Blondie - Hangin' On The Telephone
The Ramones - Cretin Hop
Cyndi Lauper - Money Changes Everything

VH1 is currently doing a top 100 songs of the 90s list.

Everlong is at #104.

What?

I've watched that one before.  I can't remember if Teen Spirit was number one, but it probably was.

The greatest songs of the 80s was just as bad, I think number one was "Living on a Prayer", and number one on the greatest hard rock songs was "Welcome to the Jungle".

Wow, it's a pretty good list so far(except for "Toxic" , I can't stand that song, and being a Britney song has nothing to do with it).  While I don't particularly like them too much, I do think that Rihanna and Lady Gaga are amongst the most tolerable pop music out right now.

...Rihanna's acting though, that may be a different story.

Agreed. I have no real opinion on Britney one way or the other, but I fucking hate Toxic.

Rest of the list is great, though.

I could've gone with "Womanizer", which is the only other Britney song I can really tolerate. But I figured that I kind of needed something by her in it, since she's too big of a name to leave out.

Although you could argue that Katy Perry is in the same boat, but I can give away that nothing by her will make it on here.

Uh... okay yeah.  But I'm in the Navy, and this film was a way for the Navy to wave it's (somewhat fictionalized) boner around.  I'm even on the type of ship Rihanna is on, a destroyer.

It's pretty good visually, and much of the portrayal of the Navy(except for the fighting aliens part) is rather acurrate, but its garbage acting and story wise.  So yeah, just like Transformers.

Oh god, Evanescence.  Hearing Amy Lee's voice is enough to burst my ear drums.  And I've seen them in concert before, granted way back when right around the time that song was coming out.

But still, awful awful stuff.
Title: Re: The Top Ten Thread
Post by: Kiddington on May 25, 2012, 10:40:58 PM
I don't think I've ever heard a single Evanescence song besides the one you listed (and if I have, it was obviously underwhelming to the point that I don't even remember it). That song, by the way, is still massively overplayed.

Did any of their other stuff ever get radio play, or were they just another glorified one-hit wonder?

Yeah, there's "Going Under", another song from the first album that I can't remember the name of but it's a softer song, and "Call Me When You're Sober".

Aside from the songs I already bitched about, it's a really solid list.  Although I think "Rabbit Run" is the better 8 Mile song over "Lose Yourself"(it's still good though).

I don't know if I could do a top twenty list like this, but I will say that my favorite pop song from the last decade is "Crazy in Love".

Title: Re: The Top Ten Thread
Post by: Commode on May 27, 2012, 09:57:01 PM
I don't think most people on tz listen to music, and many of them were probably too young to know what some of the older songs are anyway.
Title: Re: The Top Ten Thread
Post by: Spark Of Spirit on May 27, 2012, 09:57:39 PM
Outkast is the best band/group that I just can't entirely like. They have some phenomenal songs, but still inhibit so many of the problems hip hop has had over the past decade, ESPECIALLY on the album Hey Ya was from.

But that song proved that they're a phenomenal group with massive amounts of untapped potential due to being fixated with all the lesser parts of the hip hop scene.
Title: Re: The Top Ten Thread
Post by: Avaitor on May 27, 2012, 10:13:47 PM
Yeah, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below is pretty weak. It's obvious that 3000 and Big Boi were having creative difficulties and were ready to branch elsewhere, since they're actually both solo albums combined together. Andre's disc is stronger, but you can't say that it completely proves that he was the stronger member of Outkast, since it's still far from perfect.

I will say that Stankonia is one of my favorite hip-hop albums, but the rest of their discography is rather erratic. But I knew right from the beginning what the top 3 were going to be, and the only way "Hey Ya!" might not have been #1 was if I went with my earlier deadline, in which case I could've also gone with "Smooth".

Oh, also, here's a fun fact- SBxxx/TLB is the last album to this date to have gone diamond. Mostly since it's a double album sold for the price of a single one, and the RIAA doubles the sales of 2-disced LPs together.

I think Chalmey means that the vast majority of tzers may not listen to music how we do- as in, listen to full albums from artists all over the place, appreciate the notes, lyrics, melodies, creativity, etc, but rather just listen to what's on the radio or stick to one side of the spectrum.

Because I think he might be right.
Title: Re: The Top Ten Thread

I could go over there and write something if you want, but it would largely just be a regurgitation of what I've written here. It's probably not even worth it.

Good list, though, by the way. I'm impressed that you had the willpower to keep Demi out of the #1 slot (not that #2 is all that shabby  ;)). Hey Ya is a great choice, too; not sure if it'd be my #1 (I'd have to really think about this before I decided either way), but it'd probably be in my top 5 as well.

Thug mentality, glorifying greed and the almighty dollar, waxing poetic about how low you think of women.

I tried so many times to get into them, but their albums are plagued with that stuff. Which is strange because their best songs (and hits) are frequently not.
Title: Re: The Top Ten Thread

Yeah, I hate that shit too. Do you like hip-hop at all when the lyrics are good and meaningful? If so, you should check out an artist named Brother Ali. His music is some of the best I've heard in a long time.

You can also add in tons of filler one minute sample demos to that, because that's another major problem I have with their albums and hip-hop in general.

Also, do you have any particular favorites or least favorites from the list? Like, what would've you put on or kept far, far way yourself?

One more mention of the list for now. I'm done with my noir list on here, working on a new post on tz, and planning to do a brief update to my Nick list.

But this is my #1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zfzka5VwRc). It didn't go anywhere when I was making the list, but by the time I was posting it, the song was hitting the charts fairly high. Not too high though. If it made like the top 10, I'd find room for it. Otherwise, not yet.

Whaddya think?

Man, I remember when you couldn't escape PATD. I have to hand it to them for having a lot of ambition, but they were not good song writers at all.

Demi is a tolerable pop act, I've said it before. It also helps that I don't have to here about "escapades" from her all the time on the news.

You can say that about all of the FBR acts, really. I get the rest of PATD's stuff confused with FOB all the time, for one. And I used to check .fun out occasionally before their big breakthrough and thought that they would've been a lot more tolerable if they knew what the hell they were doing. They still don't seem to know.

Oh, and I mentioned this before, but if I went with earlier timeframes, "Smooth" or "Bittersweet Symphony" could've been #1, and "Scar Tissue" would've been my RHCP song of choice. Thoughts on those?

Those are all good choices. It was weird how inescapable those songs are, but I never seemed to really hate any of them.  I guess that must prove they're good pop songs.

But I also have a soft spot for a lot of Matchbox 20's stuff, especially the early stuff.

I have a bit more of an appreciation for M20 than I used to. The older stuff is solid modern day AOR. But yeah, they really went to crap after their hiatus from Rob's solo act.

Their first two albums are solid. The first has a bit of a southern bent to it and the second is a bit more straightforward, but they sort of lost it after that.

I'd just say any song that was a hit on the charts, but I think sticking to only #1's will give me more of a challenge. Although of all the songs I could rank in, the ones I'll miss a chance to do so for the most are "What's Going On" and "Epic".

Just make the list longer!
Title: Re: The Top Ten Thread
Post by: Avaitor on July 12, 2012, 09:41:27 PM
But Casey Kasem only went up to the top 40.

I could go to 100, but then I'd start running out of choices.

although yeah, the further I go, the fewer songs I see the need to add on here. To give you a reference point, the only song from my list that you'll likely see on is "Hey Ya!". "Skyscraper" peaked at 10, so it's out, and I can certainly find 40 better songs than "Lose Yourself", as much as I love it.

You probably could have filled a list with Celine Dion tunes. She's one of the few divas I just can't stomach. Never could.

Ironically, My Heart Will Go on is probably the only one on your list I'd be able to listen to without my ears being tortured and defiled (Don't think I've heard Number 3, so I can't judge).

I can't understand what anyone sees in Katy Perry for the life of me. Her songs are possibly the most shallow I've ever heard (and quite tasteless too, if "I kissed a girl" and "Ur so gay" are any indication), even her supposedly deeper meaning songs like Firework are pretty shallow since it's obvious she's not doing this out of heart. I've listened to a Lady GaGa song or two, and while I don't like her songs, I can at least see why they would appeal to some people.

"California Gurls" is the song that made me despise Katy Perry. I didn't care about her in any way with her first album, but when this came on... ugh.

It's an ugly mesh between a Beach Boys and Ke$ha knock-off, contains such a godawful chorus, has possibly the worst, most cashed-in rap appearance added into a pop song, and is written more embarrassingly than Willow Smith's crap. And of course, not a week has passed by with at least one Katy Perry song in the top 10 ever since this song came out. Proving that talent and creativity means nothing.

And I just can't stand Celine Dion at all. Or Titanic. Seriously, it's just Gone With the Wind on a boat. There's nothing else to the film.

I just don't get what people see in Katy Perry. Her songs are shallow even by bubblegum pop song standards, her image is completely unremarkable ( despite supposedly being "quirky"), she's basically just your average everyday pop artist.

I dunno, all these artists get treated as geniuses, but they aren't doing anything even remotely original or well written.

I just realized that "Where the Streets Have No Name" only hit #13, so I'm swapping that out for "With or Without You". Like it matters though.

Also, as an east coaster, I have even more reason to hate the existence of "California Gurls".

West Coast is the best coast, East Coast is the least coast.  :>

And California Gurls is awful.  Not really a fan of California Girls either, honestly.

I was going to make another list, but it was going to end up as a post just trashing "Nothing Else Matters". So I just gave up on it.

I had to bump this thread. (http://www.toonzone.net/forums/showthread.php?295005-Avaitor-Presents-The-Top-20-Modern-Pop-Songs-of-Our-Time&p=4038381#post4038381)

Some honorable mentions and a major change to the original list if you care to read.

I'm really not big on any modern R'n'B or hip hop in pop music (it doesn't compare to TLC, J5 or the like), but I find it hard to argue with most other choices... I mean, there isn't exactly a vast pool to pick from.

Wait, which song in particular are you referring to?

I don't mind the Kelly or Demi songs is what I mean.

Ah, okay.

I do get what you mean though, just wasn't sure if you were referring to anything in particular.

And because tonight is the VMA's, here are my favorite music videos:

1- Van Halen- "Hot for Teacher"
2- Billy Joel- "We Didn't Start the Fire"
3- Peter Gabriel- "Sledgehammer"
4- Bob Dylan- "Subterranean Homesick Blues"
5- Type O Negative- "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend"
6- Red Hot Chili Peppers- "Dani California"
7- Queensryche- "Silent Lucidity"
8- Paul Simon- "You Can Call Me Al"
9- Smashing Pumpkins- "Tonight, Tonight"
10- Megadeth- "Sweating Bullets"

Honorable mentions go to "Right Now" (I didn't want 2 songs by the same artist on the list, even if there's a difference between Dave and Sammy; I also could've added in "I Don't Wanna Be Me" by Type O), "Thriller (obviously), "You Could Be Mine" and "November Rain" (one is excellent product placement, the other is bombastic to the point where even David O. Selznick would think its overdone- both are good qualities, but since I'm not a big GNR fan, I didn't see a need to add either in), and "Remember December" (heehee).

Edit: Oh! And "Holy Diver". Duh!

Oh shit, I forgot this. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQ7z57qrZU8)

Is it just me, or does it sound like they say Brak during a lot of the song? I always thought that [as] should have done a parody of this video, starring Brak obviously.

3- On Fire
4- Spanish Fly
5- And the Cradle Will Rock
6- Take Your Whiskey Home
7- Mean Streets
8- So This is Love?
9- Hang 'Em High
10- Little Guitars (w/intro)
11- Hot for Teacher

If you remember this list, no, I haven't forgotten about it. I gave up on my early lead for it while working on last week's Cartoon Cartoons article, and life kind of worked away from me being able to follow up on it since. And since I'm working on this week's article now, I probably won't have time to post my next entry.

It's not like there's a whole lot of interest, anyway.

To be fair, the board does kind of run terribly, and I don't think there's much activity.

But I do enjoy reading.

I can't go into full detail like I used to in order to explain my remaining choices for my last list, but I can go into the basics for each of them, and I'm bored enough to do so:

35- Let's Go Crazy

In terms of musical cues and signatures, this song is pretty abnormal in its own right, but the craziest part? The opening. Which also works as perfect atmosphere, and sets up for one of Prince's best.

34- Yesterday

Some say this is when the Beatles smarted up, and became worthy of praise. Others say that they have always been laudable. Either way, this is a pretty perfect little pop song.

33- Oh, Pretty Woman

This one is easy to have been ruined for you, thanks to a particular movie and Sunny in Philly episode, but damn if it isn't catchy.

32- Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough

MJ's first great solo track. At least to top the charts, that is.

31- Crocodile Rock

Elton sells this bitter take on nostalgia based on the tone of his voice and keys. Easily among his finest.

30- Let's Dance

One word, three letters- SRV. 'Nuff said.

29- Heart of Gold

I'd argue that Neil Young has made plenty of stronger tracks, but this is his only one to top the charts, and it's a wonder., selling his trademark voice and lyrical shuffling as well as he usually can.

28- Mrs. Robinson

Unbelievably catchy. Made for one of the best movies ever made by one of the best songwriters ever made, and both will forever stand the test of time.

27- A Hard Day's Night

The opening chord sold millions, and the rest never let go. It's one of their best.

26- I Will Always Love You

This was a last-minute addition to my list, but a few listens of it made me realize just how strong Whitney's performance was. It has every right to be as beloved as it is.

25- Need You Tonight

I don't think anyone was able to sell sex and sincerity so equally well as Michael Hutchence. His time on here was brief, but with unforgettable music like this, he forever made his mark on this planet.

24- Last Train to Clarksville

One of the cornerstones of the 60's, everything you need to know about the decade is present in this one song by a band people thought didn't even play their own instruments.

23- Let's Get It On

Besides Hutchence, Marvin Gaye could do it all, like here, in the definitive baby making track.

22- Paint It Black

The reason we still talk about the Stones today, and why many preferred them to the other giant British band of the time, was prevalent in songs like this. Wonderful ambience combines perfectly with musical and lyrical anguish in one of their sharpest numbers.

21- Call Me

Not Maybe. Blondie did it best.

20- The Power of Love

The best song ever written for a movie, period. A bit of 80's cheese is always fun, and few did it as memorably as Huey did.

19- Beat It

It was really hard to choose between this and "Billie Jean", as both are insanely catchy and unforgettable. But I went with this, if only for Eddie.

18- House of the Rising Sun

The Animals arguably did the best take of this stable over anyone else, as it remains one of the best of the 60's.

17- Papa Was a Rollin' Stone

Funk. Aww yeah.

16- Waterfalls

The best of both worlds, in this case, R&B and rap, are put together in this demandingly relevant 90's gem, which help to make it hold up today as one of the best of its kind.

Seriously, I can't think of too many more gripping opening lines than "A lonely mother gazing out of her window staring at a son that she just can't touch". Bam. There you go.

15- (Sittin' on) the Dock of the Bay

Atmosphere unlike anything else, that would've been great if Otis was still here or not.

14- Miss You

A sell-out? Fuck that. No one did disco better than the Stones.

13- Sledgehammer

The video, the lyrics, the voice, the sax, the back-ups. Do I need to say any more?

12- I Want to Hold Your Hand/She Loves You

With these two classics, a couple of British lads took over the world in a way that no mere celebrity, before or after, could possibly comprehend to happen. And yes, these songs are still infectious.

11- Jack and Diane

There's nothing but hooks on this song. Not one, but two catchy riffs, a solitary little clap repeated throughout, a strong chorus, and one hell of a breakdown. All of this fits into one of the best songs written about growing up ever conceived.

10- Let's Stay Together

So undeniably smooth. speaking of...

9- Smooth

This is basically the biggest hit ever made, give or take "Twist and Shout". Rarely does something like this work when you combine one of the most respected guitarists of all time with the singer of a then mildly successful band, but this one definitely deserved its love here.

8- Respect

Aretha wasn't asking for respect, she was DEMANDING it. And she better have got it. With a voice like hers, how could she not? I mean seriously, she is the best.

7- Bridge Over Troubled Water

Paul needed Art, if nothing else, for this song. His voice just wouldn't have cut it if he did it himself, and thankfully this turned out as well as it did.

6- American Pie

Over here, this song is WAY overplayed. So my appreciation for it is a little smaller than it would be. But it's such a giant, that I can't knock it down too much.

5- When Doves Cry

This song kept the Boss's Born in the USA from dominating the summer of '84. God bless him for that. It's not my favorite from Purple Rain, but for all rights and purposes, I can't think of many stronger pop songs.

4- I Heard It Through the Grapevine

One of the first, and finest, psychedelic soul songs recorded, Gaye sells his paranoia and passion in here like second nature. Many other covers have tried the song at different angles, but I feel that only Creedence's comes close to matching the urgency.

3- Light My Fire

All it takes is one opening drum beat to open your mind to better. This or "Like a Rolling Stone", your call. You won't go wrong, either way.

2- Good Vibrations

I only have one Beach Boys song on here? Crazy, but hey, I could've picked something worse, right? There isn't a nanosecond of wasted recording on this track.

1- The Sound of Silence

Right from the beginning, I knew this was my #1. There are so few songs that can be literally considered as perfect, and this is one of them. The only way this wouldn't have topped my list was if like, Hallowed ever went this high on the charts.

All of these choices are obvious, very well-known songs, but they're all chart toppers. Of course they are.

I'm like one of the only people that never got tired of Smooth.

Hell, they even play it over the intercom at the store I work at least once a day (give or take), and I still like it. Really not a bad song at all.

The problem is, I don't think DK is very consistent at all. I also can't really sit through an album of theirs anymore.

Whereas with the Ramones, I still bust out Rocket To Russia and Too Tough To Die every once in a while.

But whatever, it's your choice.

different strokes (https://animationrevelation.com/DifferentStrokes.jpg) for different folks. Then again, my punk mileage has always varied.

I actually think I prefer later-era Ramones, now that I think about it. "We Want the Airwaves" and "Do You Remember Rock n' Roll Radio" are my jams.
Title: Re: The Top Ten Thread
Post by: Spark Of Spirit on August 23, 2013, 03:33:47 PM
End Of The Century is a bit underrated as a whole, but I do agree that a lot of their albums blend together. Especially the post-TTTD material.

I do remember at an old music board I used to go to I was considered crazy for thinking Too Tough To Die was their best album, but I really do. It's like they nailed the sound they were trying to get on the debut. The two hardcore songs even outdo most hardcore because they know where the style originated from (IE, them) but still have their hooks in 50s rock n' roll.

I don't listen to much punk anymore, but Rocket To Russia is still really fun, and Too Tough To Die still contains some excellent songwriting. Shame so many bands exist that sound exactly like them, it really takes a lot away from some of their other stuff.

Best Christmas song ever. Nothing gets me in the spirit quite like it.

It's the Christmas song that I immediately associate the season with. You know, the image of Christmas carolers on a street corner on a snowy day or night in December. To me, it's also a Christmas song that's hard to mess up. Whenever I hear it, in nearly any version, it is always just awesome.
