Title: TV Sucks
Post by: Commode on February 09, 2012, 08:41:15 PM
Post stuff you dislike or don't understand about TV in this topic, including trends, popular yet awful shows, Snooki, and so on.

The reason I started this thread is what is up with all these weird reality shows they have on cable now?  Stuff like Pawn Stars and Storage Wars and shit?  I just saw an ad for a show about towing cars, and if I'm not mistaken it's not the only one on TV(there's another one called Operation Repo, right?).  How is something as mundane as repossessing cars worth enough to make a TV show about it?

Why did people let Unsolved Mysteries die but turned around and watched "reality" like the Jersey Shore?

One of those can actually benefit people!

Unsolved Mysteries did make a brief comeback not all that long ago (2008-ish or so; Dennis Farina was the new host, among other things).

I'm guessing that reboot didn't last. I haven't seen it on in ages.

Despite hating the show myself, I honestly think bitching about Jersey Shore and any other reality show has become overdone. Yes, Snooki is a cunt who does not deserve a single cent that she made from that series. But attacking her will only spread her infamy.

Also, I hate how British sitcoms have entire series that are shorter than most seasons. Know it's due to quality control and a budget, but it just feels wrong having so little of shows like Fawlty Towers to watch.

Is Unsolved Mysteries not on TV anymore at all?  I remember watching the show on Lifetime(yeah ha ha) with my mom all the time as a kid.  It was a pretty awesome show, and I would like to see it again.

...Remember Supermarket Sweep?  Another show that was on Lifetime that we watched a lot.

The original Unsolved Mysteries with Robert Stack hasn't been on TV in a really long time; probably closer to 10 years or so, at least.

The revamped version with Dennis Farina was still on as recently as 2010 (and airing on Spike, no less), but I haven't seen it in a while. Of course, I thought I heard something about the rights going back to Lifetime, so maybe it's on there now. I dunno, I'd have to check.

It's on Lifetime like once a week. Fridays at like 5:30 and that's it. It's such a shame because it really was a good show and it helped a lot of people and families out as well as offering some interesting stories from across the world.

I have a soft spot for Jersey Shore. It's like watching a tanned train wreck. Can't look away.

Besides the lack of good channels I have, I too hate all the family business or whatever shows. So many bad reality shows that I forget what the hell we should be replacing them with. I also hate all of the blow stuff up shows and all the shows about jobs (truckers, oil workers, etc.) Shit, seriously someone tell me what good tv should be like because they made me get lost here.

There's far too many daytime talkshows in the LA area. I thought blocks of court shows were mundane, but after sitting through hours of Anderson/Wendy/Oz/all those other D-tier hosts, I start to wish I could be watching those old UPN dumping ground shows.

I miss soap operas. Nothing like mixing the bombast of theater with the most mundane plots of television to create some absolutely weird stories.

Too bad the genre is on its last legs.

They're still around and thriving as telenovelas and British soaps. Don't even need to learn that much Spanish to get all of it.

Watch any that feature Malillany Marin. She is hot as fuck and always plays a grey-area character. William Levy is also very english friendly since the dude grew up outside Mexico if I remember correctly.

If they want to add some sex-appeal to Sherlock Holmes, they are plenty of femme fatales they can bring in for intrigue or love interests from the original stories. or hell, even make new characters.

There is no reason whatsoever for Watson to be a female.
Title: Re: TV Sucks
Post by: Spark Of Spirit on February 29, 2012, 06:45:46 PM
I hate gender swapping, too. There's really no reason to do this at all.
Title: Re: TV Sucks
Post by: Dr. Insomniac on February 29, 2012, 07:03:25 PM
That said, I'm not really that pissed about it. We've always had Sherlock on the big screen or on TV for ages on end. It's not like a show with a change like this will ruin the mythos in anyway whatsoever.

And at least Lucy Liu's not playing Sherlock.
Title: Re: TV Sucks
Post by: Foggle on February 29, 2012, 07:08:04 PM
I don't really have a problem with a female Watson, either. It just came as a humongous shock to me. Especially the part about her being Lucy Liu.

I mean, there's no real reason for them to do this, but hey, the gender swaps in BSG worked really well. I'm willing to give Liu's Watson a chance.

Why is George Lopez still on Nick at Nite?
Title: Re: TV Sucks
Post by: Kiddington on March 13, 2012, 05:49:39 AM
Everything with George Lopez is automatically terrible by default. Everything.

You know what I still can't believe? TBS actually giving him a talk show. Thankfully that thing is long gone by now (praise Conan for bumping his cushy timeslot), but still, just the thought of it gives me chills. You couldn't ask for a more uncharismatic, downright ear-searingly annoying host than him.

I don't think much else has changed since then. I also barely watch it anymore because it's all the same shows, and they refuse to let anything new in to shake it up.

Also they still air George Lopez way too much. The show that thinks it's some kind of groundbreaking comedy but is really not at all. The show thinks too highly of itself and it's a real pain to watch.
Title: Re: TV Sucks
Post by: Rosalinas Spare Wand on March 13, 2012, 10:14:34 PM
Lopez has his heart in the right place when it comes to social issues, but lord knows the man's idea of comedy is the definition of squeaky clean sanitized jokes. Thought that seems to be a problem with a lot of ethnic comedies. They have to conform to stereotypes to find a bigger audience, otherwise they risk alienating the bigger audience. A sad reality because stuff like Everybody Hates Chris shows that there's definitely room for that kind of comedy.

It's probably because everyone on EHC is a character and not a stereotype. As I've said before, compared to Malcolm In The Middle in which every character acts the same in every episode using the same formula, there's just no contest between the two.

Post by: Avaitor on March 14, 2012, 07:22:40 PM
I do think that Nick should at least occupy the channel until at least 9 PM again.

I'd also love for them to put on some of the 90's Nick shows on, primarily the ones that The 90's Are All That barely touch. You can watch all of these other shows on syndication, other networks, or on DVD, and it'd cost them nothing to put shows like Clarissa, Pete & Pete or Alex Mack on.
Title: Re: TV Sucks
Post by: Avaitor on June 19, 2012, 07:51:28 PM
Man, you know, thinking about it, I'd do some major renovations to Nick@Nite.

First of all, it needs more variety. I don't even mean variety in terms of different kinds of shows- as cool as it would be to see something other than sitcoms on the block for a change, that's primarily all the network has been airing since around the mid-90's. The days of catching Dragnet and Alfred Hitchcock repeats alongside classic Lucy and Bewitched eps are long gone. You can still air nothing but sitcoms, but try to air more than the same 3 or 4. Just go back to shows airing on TV Land if you don't want to buy the rights to more shows. And again, you can try some older Nick shows as well.

You don't even need to bring back some classics, but I don't think it'd hurt to try really. Everything that has been airing on the block over the past few years have been syndicated to death over the past few years, which explains the low ratings. Stuff like Bewitched, Taxi, Jeannie, MTM, etc have been ignored for a longer period of time, and could easily gain some viewers who are tired of the same Friends and George Lopez repeats airing all fucking night.

And put some effort back in. Nick@Nite used to have games, contests and specialty marathons all the time. Now they just air Friends for hours on end with no rhyme or reason.
Title: Re: TV Sucks
Post by: Spark Of Spirit on June 19, 2012, 08:05:02 PM
Yeah, I haven't watched the block since Friends mania returned to it. It's all they show now. There are more fitting recent sitcoms that would work like Reba or even one of the TGIF shows. Friends has been aired to death on every channel already, I can't believe everyone isn't sick of it yet.

Don't seem so surprised; I actually know quite a few people that still legitimately like Friends.

I often wonder if they're somehow vicariously living in the year 1998 and don't realize it (or in reality, how long it's been since they've even seen it), but, it is what it is.

To bring back the Honey Boo-Boo discussion, I just learned that the dad of the middle child is a registered sex offender.

It makes sense. I mean, can you really think fo any other kind of person who'd want to tap this:

Can we just not talk about Honey Boo Boo? I mean, it's like talking about watching a dog slowly die. It's unpleasant for everyone involved and only the blackest humour can be made from it.

But seriously, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo is the bleakest program shown on television. Even bleaker than The Wire. Even bleaker than most Holocaust documentaries. Even bleaker than the ending to Blake's 7. You feel this combination of pity and scorn when seeing this little girl mutate into an attention whore. The ultimate futility of humanity is portrayed in seeing this girl lose touch with her own identity, simply being known as "Honey Boo Boo".

That's partly why I bring this up. The Honey Boo Boo, or really, the Mama saga, is one of the greatest tragedies of our time and hints towards the upcoming end of the world being a likely possibility.

And really, it's becoming the new One Direction on tumblr- something that you'll find on your dash no matter what kind of blogs you follow. There really needs to be a better male-female ratio on the site.

Child pageant girl who's been manipulated by her stage parents with steroi--I mean, "GoGo juice". Her mom looks like a talking thumb, and their show is basically today's incarnation of the freak show.

Also, I feel that this talk of bad television needs to be balanced out by recommending everyone to watch The Wire instead.

You know, I just thought about something- it sucks that FX won't find more time for reruns of their own shows. I understand that the network was created as a dumping ground for Fox's stuff, but at this point, aside from premieres and the odd late-night repeats of their show's most recent episodes, all they really air are CBS's shows and movies. The crazy thing is that while they do own some of the movies and HIMYM, they don't own Two and a Half Men, or stuff like Iron Man or Transformers.

And you'd think with originals that have received such critical acclaim and commercial interest as theirs, they would find room to air their shows more regularly. But nope. That's why Sunny repeats went to Comedy Central before they got syndicated, and I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happens to Archer when it hits 65 episodes.

That's almost as bad as APC being on DVD, yet the majority of KOTH still isn't.

Granted, APC was only like seven episodes long, so it all fits neatly into one set, but still; it's the principle of the matter.

That's kind apples to oranges though.

A better argument would be that APC came out on DVD about 5 years before Rocko got its release, besides that MOD shit on Amazon.

I've changed my mind; Mike and Molly is the absolute worst sitcom on TV right now. Even worse than BBT (VERY close, but still is).

...and to think, Melissa McCarthy won an Emmy for this. Over Amy Poehler. And this is why life is unfair.

She can be funny, though. Check out Bridesmaid and see what I mean. But yeah, there's no meat on that show at all.

And it does seem like people are getting that, too, since the show hasn't been anywhere near as popular as it was when it started out.
Title: Re: TV Sucks

Even so, her winning an Emmy for this would be pretty much akin to Kelsey Grammer winning an Emmy for Hank (for those that don't remember, Hank was the original lead-in to Modern Family that only lasted like five episodes).

Maybe she is funny; I dunno, I've never really payed any attention to her other stuff. But if she is, it's certainly not on display here. To me, she just comes off as gross, with all of the apparent comedic value being in how much of a glutton she is.

So besides that new season/mini-series of 24 that's supposed to air soon, next year, NBC is doing the same for Heroes. I don't know about you, but as one of the many people who got into the first season and instantly felt disappointed with the show as it went on, I can't help but wonder, when looking back, if the show wasn't that good to begin with. Its plot advancements probably feel dated now, and I don't recall really caring about any of the characters even when I was into it.

Although if this is part of the future of TV, I'm curious. I don't care about Heroes anymore and I haven't seen 24, but if we can get a mini-series revival out of Firefly, I'm game.

Title: Re: TV Sucks

The ratings were plummeting, yes, but CBS pulled a last-minute time slot switch with it and The Crazy Ones (which I actually like, but hasn't been announced for renewal yet), and Men got a bit of a boost back. It's still nowhere near BBT level popularity anymore, but I guess Warner demanded that CBS to try something to get some more syndication money out of the show.

There's no way that Ashton Kutcher and Jon Cryer are gonna be paid as well as they had been, though. I think they were making like twice as much as BBT's group was, which isn't even remotely feasible now.

In all honesty, a lot of the people whom I know watch the show, especially those who read the comics, do agree that it isn't necessarily great TV, but they like the action and some of the characters enough to stick around.

There are also some people who stick around just for the end game, but I don't think even Kirkland knows how it'll end.

That's about how it is for me. The show has an intensity to it and atmosphere, and I like the characters to a certain extent. As a whole, though, the show doesn't really stick with me much. I can get engaged with it when it's on, but every time the season ends and I'm away from it, I lose all ounce of attachment to it.

I dunno, count me in as another that just can't get into it. I feel like I'm watching the same thing every episode; like yeah, it's brutal and intense, which I guess makes it entertaining, but.....eh, it's just not for me. I feel like it would've made a great mini-series though.

Speaking of everything being the same, you know what I just noticed today? There's a third NCIS now (with Scott Bakula!). Like I kinda get the appeal to the original (the cast all being quirky as hell, with standard procedural platitudes thrown in), but it's hard to believe this went from being "just another cop show" to its own major franchise. What did I miss in the period that this went from middle of the pack, to the highest rated show on TV? Is it literally any different now than it was 10 years ago?
Title: Re: TV Sucks
Post by: Avaitor on October 19, 2014, 01:36:54 PM
NCIS is that weird kind of show that is supposed to be insanely popular, but I couldn't tell you anyone I know in real life that actually watches it. And I know that the show's ratings in the 18-49 demo aren't all that impressive, but the people I know outside of it hate procedurals.

And then you compare that to the other big shows on TV- Walking Dead, Big Bang Theory, Game of Thrones, the Shonda Rhimes trifecta (although Grey's is falling into the same exact trajectory that ER did- we're at the phase where less people are watching it each week, but good timing and control from its creator is keeping it around for now)- where I can't tell you how many people I know keep up with them, and NCIS seems like an afterthought.

Thinking of the disaster that is season 2 of True Detective, I was curious of your thoughts. What are some of the worst second seasons you can think of?

A few I remember include:

Dark Angel: Season 1 was a pretty good action adventure show. Season 2 was Buffy-lite and blew chunks. Shame it got canceled, but it really was lousy.
The OC: Season 1 was a pop culture phenomenon-- it even momentarily made Death Cab For Cutie relevant (like Garden State did for The Shins who were also promptly forgotten) before season 2 sent a wrecking ball to the whole thing. It was amazing how fast this fell apart.
Heroes: I have yet to see beyond one episode of this show, but am assured that it gets stupid really fast after season 1.

Any other examples?

I haven't really seen enough shows, but I could list my least favorite seasons from certain other shows:

Buffy Season 4
Angel Season 4
Dexter Season 6
Boy Meets World Season 2
Monk Season 3 (not bad, but the transition was awkward)

I can also list some of my favorite TV seasons as well:

Breaking Bad Season 4
Game of Thrones Season 2
Boy Meets World Season 4
Buffy Season 2/3
Angel Season 5
Arrow Season 2
Dexter Season 4
Malcolm in the Middle Season 3

I liked the transitional episodes of Monk because they played well into how awkward Monk's life was. On normal shows, it would bug me, but Monk I just dug from start to finish. I do wish they would put it back on Netflix-- I've been wanting to rewatch it for a good while now.

My personal favorites right now are Arrow season 2 and Person of Interest season 3. They just nailed everything in those two.

In terms of shows I've actually finished, I can only really think of the last 1.5 seasons of Battlestar Galactica. They weren't awful by any means, but a lot of the plot developments were very stupid and sometimes even cringe-worthy.

As for favorites, seasons 1-4 of The Wire are perfect television, with each one better than the last.

As far as sophmore slumps go, I think that Glee's pretty much destroyed any potential the show might have had and subsequent seasons got even worse. Heroes' second season also destroyed that series' momentum and it never got better afterwards.

As far as my least favorite seasons of shows, go, that would include:

That 70's Show seasons 7 & 8
30 Rock season 6
The Office seasons 8 & 9

That's all that I can think of right now that I really didn't like. There are other seasons of shows I wasn't big on, like Community season 4 and Louie season 4, to name a few, but I liked too many episodes or moments in those seasons to think of them as outright bad. I'd probably be able to list more if I included animated shows.

Kind of a random thought but pretty much every new character after Leo in That 70s Show seemed out of place to me. In later seasons it made it seem like a straight up [bad] parody of the show.

... Why?

The show just ended, NBC has The Voice, and these kinds of shows aren't as popular as they used to be anymore. At least wait until the decade's over to reboot it.

The Flash/Supergirl's showrunner has been fired.

Somehow I don't feel guilty about not catching up on Flash's second season still.

I've been seeing others bring up how TV seasons are shortening themselves, primarily on streaming. Only the networks and kids shows on cable are still doing 20-something episode seasons, while cable and streaming have cut things down from 13 episodes, to 10, and now they're doing 8 or less.

I understand that episode budgets are getting bigger, and the shorter seasons can work well depending on the series. Game of Thrones, for instance, probably couldn't have afforded to have more than 10 episodes a season, and it did a good job of making a season feel full at least early on. It also works that The Queen's Gambit only had 7 episodes, as it's an adaptation of a novel, and makes each episode count. But the recent MCU shows feel undercooked with little breathing room, and I'm noticing that other shows are feeling similar. Sometimes, it feels like some of these showrunners would rather be making a movie instead.

It's funny, a couple of years ago, I probably would have been in favor of the shortened seasons, and brought up how a lot of network shows had plenty of fluff in their seasons. But I've been watching Buffy for my blog again, and I'm honestly vibing with some of those early "filler" episodes more than I remembered. They're good for character and world building, and can offer worthwhile moments almost as well as the best episodes. If anything, these help to keep the pacing of a show. If everything only exists to fulfill the bigger picture, it can get exhausting. Television shouldn't need to be film.

It does feel like the lines are blurring between tv and movies as storytelling mediums, especially as tv has gotten more high budget and reliant on tighter serialized storytelling. Both Falcon and Winter Soldier and Loki felt like they could be done as a couple of movies with a little re-editing. I definitely wish Loki in particular had a longer status quo where Loki and Mobius were just doing time-traveling adventures before Sylvie and the rest of the plot kicked in.

So yeah, Warner Bros/Discovery's been shooting itself in the foot in the last couple weeks, to such a level that even execs from rival studios are like "What the hell are they doing?"

The thing that sucks (well, one of the things) is that HBO Max was easily the best streaming service before all of this bullshit started coming down.

It's really depressing.

So Riverdale's finally over tonight, and I actually saw people mourning, not because out of any enjoyment for the show ironic or genuine, but just because they're sad another 22-episode season show is gone.
