Title: How to Train Your Dragon
Post by: Avaitor on September 25, 2012, 08:39:38 PM
Discuss the franchise here. The film, the show or whatever.

Is the show any good? I saw the first special that CN aired, when the movie was first coming out on DVD/Blu, and liked it, but haven't been keeping up with the show at all.

I'm not a big fan of Dreamworks shows (Penguins aside) so I haven't checked it out.

The movie is really good, though.

Meh...
I'll take that as a no.

Oh well, it's still my favorite Dreamworks movie, but I can wait for the sequel.

I still think this is DreamWorks' best film to date.

Seeing the film for the first time right now on FX.

This... this is much much better than the fucking show. Holy crap.

Yeah, the show fucking blows.  Can't believe they are pushing it so hard, but then again it's not the first time.

Alright, totally not watching the show then.

That said, if the second movie they're making is as good as this, I'm all for it. I'm honestly loving this.

The show? basically, this is every episode I've seen.

-Problem seems to be caused by dragons.
-"Son, these dragons have got to go."
-"No, dad, this is the real problem."
-"Okay, the dragons can stay."

Every episode has been a snoozefest and honestly didn't make me want to watch the movie. I only just caught this on FX, thank goodness.

Yeah, that sounds tiresome.

But from what I remember of skimming the original book's sequels, there seems to be a lot of cool things they can do with the concept. I'm really hoping that the sequel turns out well.

The movie was OK. I didn't love it, but it was enjoyable (use of the worn out dead mother trope aside). The series, however, is a total bore and it rehashes the exact same plot ad nausea; with Hiccup having to prove to his father that dragons are good week after week. I watched the 1st few episodes and then fell off due to lack of interest.

As for the movie sequel, I'll most likely wait for it to come out on DVD, like I did for the 1st one.

I'm guessing I'm the only one here who likes the show? I thought it was going to be boring to watch when I first saw the previews but I rather enjoy it whenever it's on.

I have yet to see the movie but I've been meaning to.

I don't make a habit of keeping up with it, but it's certainly a good show and can be quite enjoyable, maybe surprisingly so.

For myself, the movie was an enjoyable watch. The series.. well... I'm not saying it's horrible. I DO watch it, but the formula is too much the same...

Exactly.
I'm thinking Dreamworks had best pull a rabbit out of their hat soon to keep things fresh and interesting with Riders Of Berk.

Favorite characters: the twins, Ruffnut and Tuffnut. They have some of the funniest lines. I recall one episode where Tuff thought a mother's baby, wrapped in a blanket as looking like a "bunch of sticks, wrapped in a slab of bacon." That really got me.  8)

Recently noticed that Dreamworks put up their teaser trailer for How To Train Your Dragon 2 on YouTube. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsFdEt_OAhI) It's about a year away from release.

Does it deserve a sequel? Anyone looking forward to it? Could it end up being too much of the same old same old?
Thoughts?

There are plenty of books to take inspiration from, and the trailer looks good enough, so I'm sold.

The first movie was excellent, and if they're following the books I see no reason not to. Just leave the tv series canon out of it; we don't need that shit.

Saw the trailer...doesn't tell much about what the movie will be about, but it was a very gorgeously animated sequence, so I loved it.

The first movie was quite good, probably my second favorite Dreamworks Animation flick after the original Kung Fu Panda, so I'm hoping this movie will be a worthy sequel to the original. 2014 can't come sooner.

Sorry about that link I posted earlier. I had no idea it was being regionally restricted like that. It's ridiculous on why they do that to begin with. They even labeled it as "Official International Teaser Trailer" yet it can't be viewed internationally. Interesting how that works, huh?  Pfffft...!  :??:

Glad you found the alternate link, though - Interestingly enough, it works for me as well. =)

Definitely. As long they keep Riders Of Berk as a separate entity from the movies, things might be okay.

That would be my only gripe about it. But as a teaser trailer, I guess we can't expect too much. If anything, it's probably best to not let the cat out of the bag too early.

I saw How To Train Your Dragon 2 today, and I thought it was just as good as the first film. I found the stuff with Hiccup and his mother particularly nice, and appreciated Hiccup's character development in this film as well. If I have any complaints it's that the side characters are rather obnoxious comic relief, but they play such a minor part in the film that it didn't detract from it much.

Just saw the new one, and I liked it about as much as the first, which means this is tied for my favorite Dreamworks movie.

I'll try to write a bigger post later, but don't expect a full review. ;)

At least they're not as obnoxious about it as Lindsay and Todd are with Wreck-It Ralph.

Did we watch the same movie? What parts did he not find funny or charming? I personally thought most of the stuff involving Ruffnut and her admirers was funny. The part where Hiccup bonded with his estranged mother was charming.

I did see Dragons 2 and I thought it was a step up from the first in comedy and drama. Might be my contender for best animated flick of 2014, still divided on The Lego Movie.

That whole subplot with Ruffnut was my least favorite part of the movie, honestly. I thought scenes like Hiccup playing around with Toothless and Astrid teasing Hiccup were much funnier, charming moments, while the Ruffnut stuff tended to make me roll my eyes and annoyed me.

In any case, I thought the movie was overall as good as the first one, myself. I'm surprised at some of the criticisms people have made about it. I have no clue what they wanted from the film, but I fail to see how it could be an unpleasant viewing experience in the slightest.

I personally thought the villain in the movie was handled better than Alvin was in the TV show. Someone that decided to use Dragons for evil does serve as a good contrasts for Hiccup and his mother who wanted Dragons and Humans to live in peace. The fact that unlike Alvin, Drago Bludvist had his own dragon army years before Hiccup started to train dragons. I dunno, I found Drago to be a more threatening force overall, and even a bigger threat than the den mother of the first film.

Yeah, Ruffnut's subplot was a low point for me, as well. It's such a cliched joke that almost broke everything up when it happened. Maybe I got a chuckle out of the whole thing, overall.

So, as someone who's always incredibly behind on big-budget animated movies, I FINALLY saw the first movie....5 years after its initial release.

I really enjoyed it quite a bit. It's probably my second favorite DreamWorks movie behind Kung-Fu Panda, which might not be saying much, but keep in mind that I'm not exactly a huge fan of Pixar, either, despite them having a better track record.

Anyways, the sequel is on Netflix right now, so I'll probably get around to that soon.

I just watched the second movie. Overall I liked it as much as the first. Possibly even a little better.

This and Kung-Fu Panda are pretty much the best things that Dreamworks has put out since The Prince of Egypt, IMO.

They really are. They're, like, the only movies I really care about from Dreamworks.

Although I have been thinking of watching the first 2 Shreks again, and I still need to see The Croods and Peabody & Sherman.

I saw Hidden World last night, and was blown away. The world and character building in these films are fantastic, as is Saliari's villain role. Not to mention how gorgeous the animation and use of lighting are- this is easily one of the most beautiful animated films I've seen, to the point that I almost gasped when we got to the titular world.

This was easily worth the wait, but I'm sad that there won't be more. Still, at least the franchise will end on a high note, and I think that it's a better trilogy than Toy Story. Granted, that's not going to be a trilogy for much longer, but nothing we're seeing for 4 is giving me much to anticipate.
