Title: Let's Get Edumacated!
Post by: Daikun on December 10, 2012, 06:22:47 PM
Does anyone watch documentaries or any programming that they find educational? There can be some interesting things to watch beyond the scope of History Channel's weekly Hitlerthon or PBS' Pre-school Brain Sugar.

1) Unwrapped on Food Network. Every episode covers a topic on a popular snack food or dessert that is devoured through the world. And it's hosted by Marc Summers! (Yes, THAT (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_Dare_%281986_game_show%29) Marc Summers!)

2) Modern Marvels on the History Channel. Hour-long documentaries about the history, adoption, and expansion of inventions that have changed the world.

3) Rick Steves' Europe on PBS. My dad and I like to catch this before he heads to work in the morning. You get to learn about a few cities in a specific country in Europe. You learn about its culture, food, attractions, people... The whole shebang.

I used to be a huge buff of Neo-Nazi documentaries, if only because it was interesting to see and hear people who'd kill me if I was near them.

Lately I've been learning about a lion named Christian. I'm someone who's really into nature and wildlife, and have taken an interest in this particular animal and watched a documentary about him. Christian is a lion who was born in the late 1960s/early 70s and was bought in London by two guys who have just moved into the city. At this time, it was legal to buy such exotic animals as house pets (I think it became illegal in 1975), and it wasn't totally unnatural. But anyway, the two guys spent the next year raising Christian in their house, feeding him with steak and giving him exercise in a nearby field. Eventually he outgrew their house, of course, and so they decided he needed to be brought to Africa to be integrated into the wild. The crowning moment of their time together, and of Christian's recognition, came a year later, when the two guys decided to visit him. It's a phenomenal moment. I'll just link the documentary here.
