Title: Mike Tyson Mysteries
Post by: Daikun on May 10, 2013, 09:16:41 PM
Adult Swim's 2013 Upfront was announced today, (http://blogs.indiewire.com/shadowandact/adult-swim-2013-2014-slate-includes-mike-tyson-mysteries-2-new-aaron-mcgruder-projects-return-of-boondocks-black-dynamite) and a bit of a surprise popped up in their list of original series: A project from WBA!

QuoteMIKE TYSON MYSTERIES - In the new animated comedy series Mike Tyson Mysteries, Mike Tyson is taking the fight from the boxing ring to the streets... by solving mysteries! Armed with a magical tattoo on his face and a trusty associate by his side -- a talking pigeon -- if you have a problem that needs solving, Iron Mike is in your corner. The series incorporates live-action appearances featuring Mighty Mike himself, and the gloves come off as the former heavyweight champ and his fowl-mouthed partner gear up for weekly adventures as they put unsolved mysteries -- like how to defeat a super computer at chess or why a famous author/werewolf can't finish his novel -- down for the count. Animated quarter-hour from Warner Bros Animation.

It shall be such an avant-garde show that minor minds like ours will be too casual to appreciate.

Hopefully this will be good and not random for the sake of random. It being done by WBA means it'll at least be animated well.

I don't know, compared to all the other crap they announced, this may be the best show AS has come up with in a while.

As WTF?!-inducing as this idea sounds, it actually sounds like it could be head-and-shoulders above Adult Swim's usual drek. At least with WBA at the helm, it will be animated well, and hopefully the usual Williams Street hacks won't be writing it.

Now that I think about it, when was the last time AS made a Hanna-Barbera parody series? Those were certainly when AS' originals were at their best. Nice to see that WBA is trying to recapture that.

Wait. That may not just be a Speed Buggy rip-off. Considering it's Speedy's 40th anniversary, it may be Speedy him/itself. It wouldn't be an [as] project without some kind of back-handed tribute to H-B's past, even if it's WBA.
Title: Re: Mike Tyson Mysteries
Post by: LumRanmaYasha on June 02, 2013, 11:19:37 AM
Well, maybe it is a redesigned Speed Buggy, but it looks quite different from the original to be honest, despite their similarities. Either way, if this show treats HB's shows with the humorous treatment Harvey Birdman gave them, then this could be quite a fun show.

It's been a while since we've heard anything...

The show is due in the Fall, (http://adultswimcentral.com/2014/05/09/pre-upfront-news-mike-tyson-mego-figure-hints-at-fall-release-of-series) and we have action figures!

That was brilliantly ridiculous. Loved it!
Didn't realise Norm Macdonald was to be part of the cast.

I'm thinking this could be a good shot in the arm for [as].

That was funny! Exactly like Harvey Birdman and Sealab, i.e. the exact kind of show AS needs way more of. Pigeon and the Marquess are going to be awesome characters I can tell.

You know what would really rock? An episode that features a parody of Punch-Out.
Title: Re: Mike Tyson Mysteries

The trailer reminded me of The Venture Bros.

Also, unless I missed something, where was the talking car from the teaser image? I don't think I saw it anywhere in the trailer.

I love how the Marquess is a parody of Funky Phantom and the Pigeon is a parody of HB mascot characters.  ;D

I guess they ditched the talking car. Oh well.

The teaser has me interested. If Iron Mike actually developed this himself for [as], I'll give him a gold star. Yes, they're tossing parodies of 70's H-B in there at every turn, but as I said, it's not [as] if they weren't making a mockery of those halcyon days.

That said, Ani-Mike looks a bit like Curly Neal (Harlem Globetrotters), but with the tattoo and gap tooth. Didn't know Mike was a toon fan as a kid......

The first episode has been up on ASV and youtube for about a week, actually. I've watched it. The first episode had a lot of expository dialogue at the beginning and not  many strong jokes, so I kind of found it dull overall. But I do like the concept of the show, and the characters seem amusing enough, so I think it could improve in future episodes. I'll stick with it for the time being.

Nothing spectacular but it still got some laughs out of me. I think Mike is great portraying himself as a bumbling detective. It works really well.

This show has lots of potential. I'm going to stick with it to see how it goes in future episodes.

Yep, that was Norm Macdonald. He's quite amusing with most voice work he does.
I enjoyed his role as the first appearance of Death in an old episode of Family Guy - it just stands out to me for some reason.

Mike tends to be my favorite character so far and got the most laughs from me. But the pigeon could easily take Mike as fav if he's wrote into the episodes really well. Time will really tell how this series pans out in quality.

I'm rather surprised by how this show is so different from what I was expecting. From the trailers and promotional material we've seen before, I thought this would be a comical action/adventure show similar to The Venture Bros. Instead, we got something more low-key and slower-paced than usual for a typical Adult Swim show.

And I like it!

I've missed the last two eps, but can catch up quickly via On Demand. In typical [as] fashion, the joke gets old real fast, in this case, poking fun at Tyson's own shortcomings (i.e. lack of intellect).

Wasn't too thrilled with the chess ep (week 2), as I thought the jokes were a little dated.

They do both involve the moon. Not sure how continuity is going to work in this series, but that's where it seems to be leading.

Ah man, really? I guess Mike killed God in the last one so that sorta works as a finale-ish final episode, but that's still a bummer to hear since the show was still really good and I always looked forward to new episodes. This is the same as hearing from Dave Willis on the [adult swim] Summer Showdown stream a few weeks ago that Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell is pretty much over except for maybe a finale special. All my fave [as] shows are ending it seems.  :-\
