Well, if there is one thing that I can say about anime compared to most Western cartoons in a positive light, it's that the former typically tends to put a bit more effort into its music, and many great anime have a wide breadth of well-composed scores, giving their OSTs both variety and also a distinguishable identity. For this thread I want to mainly focus more on OST music, but feel free to talk about your favorite OPs and EDs as well.

For today, I want to get at least some of you guys acquainted with the awesome music from a series that, outside of its own country, is tragically overlooked and is still to this day left unknown to even plenty of hardcore anime fans. I am of course talking about Ashita no Joe. Here are some of my favorite tracks from that series between both of its anime adaptations:

Rikiishi's Theme- http://youtu.be/MvfLcncxSGw

Joe's Theme- http://youtu.be/8_Zh9VzhAh0

Joe Whistling His Own Theme- http://youtu.be/_b2zzxY24q4 (I dare any of you fools to give me another character who's as bad-ass as the one who whistles his own fucking theme song)

This One That I Don't Know The Name Of, But Is That Theme In Every Classic Shounen Series That Pumps You Up- http://youtu.be/vEHu8nVm5mg

Midnight Blues- http://youtu.be/cA1NK-B45Is

Yeah, if there's one thing anime unquestionably trumps american cartoons in, it's better music. Seriously, the ost in any battle shonen anime trumps every superhero cartoon not named BTAS by miles.

Those Ashita no Joe tracks are badass. I'll have to listen to them more to see how much of an impact they stay with me, but it's certainly the kind of music I dig.

To be honest I'd have to listen to the soundtracks of some of my favorites again before I can put together a confident list of anime osts. Off the top of head, though, these are my 20 favorite individual ost tracks:

20. Baka Song - Ranma 1/2 : AKA the theme song for tsundere's everywhere.  :D
19. Misfortunate Priestess, Kikyo - InuYasha : InuYasha actually has a really good OST. The anime just uses it awfully.  :srs:
18. Battle Action Theme - Ranma 1/2 - When I think of a chaotic melee, I think of this.
17. Spokey Dokey - Cowboy Bebop - I'm a sucker for harmonicas.
16. Space Lion - Cowboy Bebop - Oh god, the feels.
15. I Want You - Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt - Second best villain theme.
14. Red Ribbon - Dragon Ball - Best villain theme.
13. Beauty's Theme - Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo - A calm but unforgettable track.
12. The Legendary Hajikelist, Don Patch - Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo - Don Patch is badass and so is his theme song.
11. Conan Main Theme - Detective Conan - You know shit is going down when this plays.
10. Showdown - Detective Conan - Always so satisfying to hear when the case is closing and the moment of truth approaches.
9. Blumenkranz - Kill la Kill - Yeah, it's recent and the german is shittier than any engrish I've heard, but it's so goddamn epic, I don't care.
8. Overtaken - One Piece - You REALLY know shit is going to go down when this plays.
7. Hachamecha Daikonran 1 - Urusei Yatsura - The most epically jazz-tastic track in the Urusei Yatsura ost. Whenever I watch it, I get pumped up.
6. Fly Away - Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt - Irresistibly addictive.
5. Don't Lose Your Way - Kill la Kill - Yeah, it's recent, but it pumps me up and is always used to epic effect in the show.
4. Never Could Have Been Worse - Trigun - Whenever I think of Trigun, this track comes to mind. The feeeelllsss!!!
3. His Name is Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo - Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo - The single most nostalgic and adrenaline pumping anime theme for me.
2. Ai wa Boomerang - Urusei Yatsura - Simply beautiful. Not surprising, since it closes out Beautiful Dreamer.
1. Lupin the Third theme and Super Hero - Lupin the Third - I couldn't choose between these, because both are awesome and iconic Lupin goodness to me. Undoubtedly my favorite tracks.

These explanations might be a little half-assed, but these are all badass tracks that refuse to get out of my head and I've listened to them over and over again. Give 'em a listen, why don't you?  :)

In the meantime, I should go listen through a few OST's again and reevaluate/rediscover some more good tracks...

EDIT: Shit, I can't believe I forgot about Komm, susser Tod...Really, there are just too many great tracks for me to remember.  :P

Great songs, guys! Your list is very good Cartoon X, though personally I would put I Want You higher. ;) I think I'll abstain from making my own top 20 until the Space Dandy OST comes out, since I've already heard at least three tracks in that show which would appear in mine.

Lately I've been listening to a lot of these:
Gatchaman ~ In The Name of Love [Gatchaman Crowds] - Say what you will about Crowds (I don't care for it, myself), but this song is a masterpiece.
Inu ka 3L [Kill la Kill] - Two of my absolute favorite songs from KLK in one.
Shinkai [Redline] - Dat bass. :swoon:

I'll also post my top 10 openings and endings, I suppose. :)

Openings
10. Out of Control [Psycho-Pass OP2]
9. Top Of Tokyo [Tokyo Tribe 2] - Yes, this is from the Goosh Goosh show. I've never actually watched it, but the OP is still amazing.
8. Theme from Lupin III '79 [Lupin III Part 2 OP3]
7. Viva Namida [Space Dandy]
6. R.O.D Theme [Read Or Die OVA]
5. Bowl Man [Hyouge Mono OP1]
4. Uragiri no Yuuyake [Durarara!! OP1]
3. Bloody Stream [JoJo's Bizarre Adventure OP2]
2. Tank! [Cowboy Bebop]
1. Guns & Roses [Baccano!]

Endings
10. Kizuna [Hyouge Mono] - Not really a favorite, but I needed one more.
9. Date Time [Samurai Flamenco ED1]
8. X Jigen e Youkoso [Space Dandy]
7. Minasoko ni Nemure [Blue Submarine No. 6]
6. Lithium Flower [Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex English ED]
5. Ride On Shooting Star [FLCL]
4. Roundabout [JoJo's Bizarre Adventure] - Yeah, it wasn't actually made for an anime, but it's still one of the best songs of all time.
3. Fallen Angel [Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt]
2. The Real Folk Blues [Cowboy Bebop]
1. Duty Friend [Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine]

Great lists Foggle!  :joy: A lot of those are favorites of mine as well. I'll edit this post later when I can put up my own opening and ending lists.

And Shinkai is totally badass. I can't believe I forgot about it, but then again, I forgot about a lot of other tracks too.  :P I really do need to go through a bunch of OSTs again.

Your list is very good Cartoon X, though personally I would put I Want You higher. ;)

I love "I Want You," but after listening though all of those again I decided I liked those other tracks a bit more. It was a very hard list to make, honestly.  ;)

Lord Dalek

Stuff I listen to frequently as of late...

Watching You -This Time I'm Seeing You-: The best Gundam op that...never happened....Fucking F91.

Pierrot Headroom: Five minutes of pure Taku.

Firebird: See above.

The Storm and The Process: Easily my two favorite Big-O tracks.

Prologue: Gene Shaft This show is boring crap but the music.... DAAAAAYUMN.

CCA main theme: 80s anime music at its finest. I love it.

Great lists, guys!

After much deliberation, I have also complied my top favorite opening and ending songs list. I made these lists both top 15 ones because, though I tried, I really couldn't cut 'em down any further since I really love all of these songs. However, because posting lists like this take so much time for some reason, I'll only put up my top 15 opening list right now, and put up my endings list when I'm less busy.

Also, because this thread is solely dedicated to the music of anime, my rankings are only based on how much I enjoy the songs by themselves. Otherwise, my favorite openings list, ranking the actual openings, can be found here.

And now...MY FAVORITE OPENING SONGS:

15. "Advance Adventure" - GARDEN (Pokemon: Advanced Generation)

I know what you're thinking. A Pokemon opening? CREDIBILITY INVALIDATED. Well, hold on, and actually take a listen to it. This opening is for the original japanese version of the anime. Specifically, it's the first opening of the second series (known here in U.S. as seasons 6-9), Advanced Generation. It's upbeat, full of energy, and lyrically, it's very fitting for the mood of the early AG episodes, and the franchise in general. Reading the subtitle lyrics actually makes me a bit nostalgic for the days of playing the generation 3 Pokemon games on my Game Boy Advance, and for this portion of the anime as well. It's a strong song and always a great listen, and the second best (imo) in Pokemon to date.

14. "Cutie Honey" - Koda Kumi (Re: Cutie Honey)

There are three anime themes that have been repeatedly used throughout their franchises: Lupin the Third's, Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro's, and Cutie Honey's. I have never actually watched any Cutie Honey series, but I have heard every form of it's irresistibly catchy theme song, and whenever I recall it I find it hard to get it out of my head again. My favorite rendition of the theme and opening is Re: Cutie Honey's, by virtue it sounds the most energetic and jazzy of all them. All the songs are the same lyrically though. They're laughably silly and campy, which is the charm, and at the same time it's what makes it awesome. They really get stuck in my head sometimes, and it's not hard to get pumped up whenever the singer yells "Honey Flash!" I'm not sure if I'll ever get around to watching a Cutie Honey series, but the endless renditions of this song over the years are all the validation I need to claim it as a truly awesome and kick-ass theme.

13. "Angelus" - Hitomi Shimatani (InuYasha)

Rockin' Latin-esque beat? Check. Good, fitting lyrics for the part of the show it covers? Check. Badass? FUCK YES. This song simultaneously pumps me up and get me sentimental over some of the most emotional/intense parts of InuYasha (manga, of course), and I always enjoy listening to it.

12.  "Viva Namida" - Yasuyuki Okamura (Space Dandy)

Just a really energetic and cool song, make even better combined with the opening's visuals.

11. "Dancing Star" - Izumi Kobayashi (Urusei Yatsura)

80's dance music at it's finest.

10. "Cobra" - Yoko Maeno (Space Adventure Cobra)

Man, 80's shonen were so much cooler weren't they?...

9. "Mezase Pokemon Master" - Rica Matsumoto (Pokemon)

MEZASE POKEMON MASTER BEATS THE SHIT OUT OF I WANT TO BE THE VERY BEST AND ANYONE WHO DISAGREES WITH THIS IS A NOSTALGIA-BLIND FOOOOOOLLLLL!!!

....But, no, seriously. I really do think that the original japanese opening for Pokemon is a more kick-ass opening theme. The beat is faster, the lyrics more meaningful and fun ("Even if in fire, in water, in grass, in forests/In ground, in clouds, in that girl's skirt" > any line in the U.S. opening), and there's more energy to it. Don't get me wrong, I am fond of the U.S. opening and it is nostalgic for me, but the original japanese song is just a cooler song, and the one I prefer at the end of the day.

8. "Rock the Planet" - Steffanie Borges (Urusei Yatsura)

There's both an english version and japanese version for this one. I love them both. "Rock the Planet" is the opening song of Urusei Yatsura that best covers the kind of show it is, in my opinion, even more so than Lum's Love Song. More than that, it's just a kick-ass song to listen to. Rocks the planet indeed.

7. "Guns and Roses" - Paradise Lunch (Baccano!)

Writing these lists takes too long. Does this one really need an explanation? I don't think it does. Just listen to it.

6. "R.O.D." - Y K Z (R.O.D)

I haven't watched either the OVA series or the tv anime of Read or Die, but I discovered this opening theme a year ago and I loved it. It's like the perfect spy/secret agent theme, and certainly the kind of adrenaline pumping theme I dig.

5. "Tank" - The Seatbelts (Cowboy Bebop)

Yeah, like "Guns and Roses", I don't feel like explaining this one. It's pretty much perfect.

4. "Duvet" - Boa (Serial Experiments Lain)

The song to my favorite anime opening ever. It's a beautiful piece.

3. "Theme from Lupin the Third ('79 version)" - Yuji Ohno (Lupin the Third)

I just love this theme. I loved it from the moment I first heard it, and I still listen to it regularly now. It's like the embodiment my kind of music, which, as you probably can see by now, is upbeat high-octane adrenaline pumping jazzy goodness. It's also the most iconic anime theme ever, imo. Even alone the song reminds me of the greatness that is the Lupin the Third franchise.

2. "Bloody Stream" - Coda (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure)

See above but with lyrics. The way the song builds up is amazing.

1. "Wild Challenger" - Jindou (Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo)

SAY WAH! BOBOBO! SAY WAH! BOBOBO! This is by far the most adrenaline pumping, ass-kicking opening theme for me. If you look at my list, the actual opening isn't that high up, because as much as I like it other songs have better use of both visuals and the song. Alone, however, this song does SO much for me to remind me of the awesomeness that is Bobobo. I can't help but feel pumped up and nostalgic from it. Yeah, I'm probably biased, but this is the kind of anime theme that every other anime comedy wishes they had, and it's on par with the best of the best battle shonen anime themes as well. I love it to death, and probably will until then.

Honorable Mention:

"Life" - Fujifabric (Silver Spoon 2): I really like this song, but a full version isn't available yet, and until I hear the full thing I can't really put it above the others in my top 15. For now, though, this fan-made extended version is a nice listen.

And there's my list. Bash away. My ending songs list will be up sometime later.

Ah, I forgot to put up my favorite endings themes list before! Here goes:

15. It's Love - Rabbit (Ranma 1/2: Big Trouble in Nekonron, China)

A massive ear-worm song. I was humming the shit out of this for weeks after I first heard it. Also kinda nostalgic since they used it in the movie trailer, which would play at the end of old Pokemon vhs tapes I watched as a kid.  So, even though it was years until I would actually watch the series much less the movie, the song already left an impression on me.  :D

14. The Ballad of Ranma and Akane - Yamaguchi Kappei and Hidaka Noriko (Ranma 1/2)

This is such a sweet song, having Ranma and Akane quietly sing about wanting to share their feelings for one another, settling to shyly hold each others hands. Even I get a little teary eyed at it sometimes. No wonder they didn't make an english version of this song; no way could they top the original seiyuu's performances in this.

13. Afro Gunso - Dance Man (Sgt. Frog)

A silly, fun, and groovy song that perfectly fits the bizarreness of Keroro GunsoO0

12. Duty Friend - NIKIIE (Lupin the Third: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine)

11. X Jigen e Youkoso - Etsuko Yakushima (Space Dandy)

10. All of the Urusei Yatsura Ending Themes

I love ALL of the UY endings. They'd take up too much of the list if I had 'em separated, so I'm lumping them together in one slot. I will say that, among them, the first two and the eight are my MOST favorites.

9. Ride on Shooting Star - The Pillows (FLCL)

What can I say? It jumps pumps me up and is synonymous with the show to me.

8. Eternal Pose - Asia Engineer (One Piece)

Perfect song to close out the Water 7 episodes. I'm glad it gets played on even more episodes in the U.S. release. One time song lisencing problems worked out for the better.   :humhumhum:

7. Roundabout - YES (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure)

"Roundabout" is one of my favorite songs ever. I don't care if it wasn't made for the show, it's awesome.

6. The Real Folk Blues - The Seatbelts (Cowboy Bebop)

Even alone the song pulls strong emotions from me, reminding me of Spike and his struggle to deal with the past he can't leave behind. A brilliant piece.

5. Melancholy no Kiseki - Kayoko Matsunaga (Urusei Yatsura 4: Lum the Forever)

4. Come by Naime Amuro, English Version by Sophie Monk (InuYasha)

3. Shiki no Uta - Minmi (Samurai Champloo)

2. Ai wa Boomerang - Yuuko Matsutani (Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer)

Yeah, I know I had already put this in my favorite OST list, but I didn't know then that I'd make a favorite anime ed themes list later. But yeah, I really love this song, and it's a perfect closing piece to my favorite anime movie ever.

1. Positive - Miho Morikawa (Ranma 1/2)

This is the most uplifting song for me. I don't really know why, but I feel really...positive whenever I listen to it. I mean, that IS what the lyrics are supposed to make me feel, but even without reading subtitles over it the song alone satisfies me on a level that beats any of the other songs in this list. And it's strangely nostalgic for me too, which is something I don't know how to explain. I love all the songs I've put on this list, but among them, I can say with most certainty that "Positive" is the one that gives me the most pleasure out of all of them.

Okay, I guess I'll start with quite possibly my favorite anime soundtrack. Also, while I will focus on background music, I will mention some of my favorite openings and endings.

Romeo x Juliet

Opening: Inori (You Raise Me Up, Japanese): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHYB9u8vt2c

Can't find the English version of that song, which plays occasionally in the series. But the Japanese is really the main version. Just a lovely song, really.

And now for the background OST, the soundtrack just has a lot of class. It's very nice.

Capulet Ie no Higeki: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXBVPYGHfX8&list=PLD0794A91623DBFC8
Nakama Tachi: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4yO9ex3IaI&list=PLD0794A91623DBFC8
Deai: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQxF8dxwMGc&list=PLD0794A91623DBFC8
Kakki: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxmBA_JJ52s&list=PLD0794A91623DBFC8
Doukoku: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrJ3AfSn-NU&list=PLD0794A91623DBFC8
Yakusoku: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8Wr_Qd6Qrc&list=PLD0794A91623DBFC8
Yami: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_hVaCRQZvk&list=PLD0794A91623DBFC8
Unmei: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOYdpzwe4TQ&list=PLD0794A91623DBFC8 (This is the song, after "Inori", that I immediately associate with the series. Really bring back the feels when I listen to it.)
Kibou: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QX4wdLYoEM4&list=PLD0794A91623DBFC8
Kimi no iru Sekai: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcvlVNcKkIk&list=PLD0794A91623DBFC8 (One of my personal favorites from the series.)

Although I didn't like any of Romeo x Juliet's ending themes. :P

I'll move on, as Romeo x Juliet makes me a sensitive talonmalon333, and we don't need that around here.

Monster

I mostly like the ending themes to this series.

For the Love of Life: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qUtPttl5vg
Make It Home: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enYX5tpKRe8

Admittedly I don't love the second ending, and I was unsure about it at first. But it grew on me, and it did fit.

Hunter x Hunter

Opening 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hANaSlH9wpw

That opening kind of takes me back to when I saw this series. I remember, after the first 5-10 episodes (which I thought were a bit average), I became so hooked and marathon'd the whole series in a relatively short time.

Densetsu: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAIpdZR5XfM
Gon no Tema: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAsLZ-8eYSU&list=PLBD5EA674B001DBE7
Kurapika no Tema: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUkmYZJiAks
Yomi E No Tobira: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkjcSdLnQek&list=PLBD5EA674B001DBE7

Now I have a question for anyone familiar with Hunter x Hunter's soundtrack. There are two songs in particular that I really liked, but I can't seem to find them. The first song played during the Hunter Exam, when Gon was running away with Hisoka's badge in the forest. The second song played in a following scene. It was played when Gon sitting in a field thinking to himself about how he had gotten as far as he did because everyone helped him, and that he couldn't have done it alone. Those are the two scenes that I particularly recognize the songs from. For anyone who knows what songs I'm talking about, can you tell me what their names are?

Cowboy Bebop

Everyone knows this soundtrack, so I don't need to talk about it or post anything from it. It's a great soundtrack.

Rozen Maiden

Ending 2 - Traumend: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a90seA2rMbw

From this show, Rozen Maiden, I wasn't the biggest fan of its opening themes, as well as its first ending theme. But I love the second ending. Just as Inori from Romeo x Juliet is my favorite anime opening, this is probably my favorite anime ending, and possibly my 2nd favorite anime theme in general.

Awai Omoide: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TiPYl72OhaQ&list=PL85BEF0B94468C800
Naisei: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iE4piMKMwOs&list=PL85BEF0B94468C800
Hyoukai: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fkv4dZi2DrA&list=PL85BEF0B94468C800
Abstract: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRbJp2PF6tg&list=PL85BEF0B94468C800
Kodoku nai Kokoro: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Blp7OVhGQDM&list=PL85BEF0B94468C800
Kodakai Oka ni Te: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yX2LPKTsAHg&list=PL85BEF0B94468C800
Alice Game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abhS96AtTDc

Those last three themes I listed are my favorites from the series. And as far as background music goes, that last one, Alice Game, is the song I think of right away with I think of this show. It does a good job of creating the feel of the underlying story of the series, and it has that level of class that the rest of the soundtrack has.

Yu Yu Hakusho

Struggle of Sadness: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hHTTBH6QRE

I have a bit of a hard time not favorite that one. It's powerful and extremely flexible. But I also love Takati no Hate, both versions.

Tatakai no Hate (Main Version): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGMlFryj-N8
Tatakai no Hate (Alternate Version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04tnfl7YQms

The "alternate version" is actually the one that is usually played in the series. I think that, despite being much smaller, the alternate version manages to hit that same "heroic" note as the main version with the chorus.

Ashitta ni Mukatte (Main Version): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhtxiRgB3GE
Ashitta ni Mukatte (Acoustic Version): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASMEHieo02w

Again, the main version on the soundtrack is actually used less frequently (I can only remember one usage of it). I also think I like the acoustic version a bit more.

Unnamed Sad Song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZNZ9XahnZk

Anyone who has seen the show knows this one. In this song, I think it's important that the middle section repeats three times (as it does in that link). For some reason, that makes the entire song for me.

In the Yu Yu Hakusho thread, I also talked about my opinions on the show's opening and endings. So my opinions on those can easily be found there in the most recent pages.

Azumanga Daioh

Raspberry Heaven: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWsxg3uNMt4

I have to admit, if you can get into this type of show, it's easy to get attached to the characters in it. And this ending theme really captures that feeling of connection with them (if that makes sense). It also creates a bit of sadness and, in some ways, nostalgia when you listen to it at the end.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni

Opening 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRtsIJXrhqc
Opening 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VO_wT4mNSFc

I think those two openings really do a phenomenal job at giving off the overall feeling of the two seasons. The first season is all mystery and, in many ways, kind of crazy and downright creepy. The opening captures that feeling well. The second opening, on the other hand, has a feeling of just overwhelming sadness that sets the tonw for Kai, which almost has a feel of hopelessness to it.

Main Theme: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UuofG8a7EEk

That, as listed as the show's main theme, is the best in it, I think. Remember that feeling of hopelessness that I mentioned the second season carries? Well that background theme captures it, but in its own, kind of creepy way. I do have to admit though, that for personal reasons which coincide with the time when I saw this series, that theme does make me feel a bit uneasy. But it's really perfect.

talonmalon333

Somehow, I forgot to mention Legend of the Galactic Heroes in my last post.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes

Skies of Love: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPeLIXWLaiw

That's some anthem goodness right there.
