Let's get this show on the road!

Like many of you, I'm an avid reader of comics and so, I thought it only appropriate that the next tournament I host on our forum is dedicated to this noble art-form. However, before you can begin nominating your personal favorites, there are a few things I'd like to clarify:

This tournament is open for comics of all formats, so before you ask; yes, you can nominate manga. I know we already had a "Greatest Manga Tournament" sometime ago, but I see no reason to leave out Japanese comics on that basis alone.

For the moment, I'll allow each member to nominate up to 40 comics of their choice. That said, that amount may be expanded, should it prove necessary.

Finally, please make sure to write the name(s) of the creator(s) of the comics you nominate. Thank you.

That is all, I hereby declare the nomination thread open.

I'll nominate a little later, but I have a few questions first:

Are all manga eligible, or only ones that weren't previously a part of the Greatest Manga Tournament?

Also, when it comes to nominating Superhero comics, should we nominate by story arc, the specific run handled by a writer/artist duo, or just the entire book in general?

And just a suggestion...but I think allowing everyone to nominate up to 40 comics might be a bit too much. It'd probably better if we limited ourselves to 16 or 20 per each member. Past competitions have suffered from overcrowding, so I think we should try to be stricter about the limits and what we nominate.

Pharass

Those are some good questions, I shall answer them in the order they were given:

All manga are eligible. So, if you want to nominate a few from the Greatest Manga Tournament, go ahead.

This one's a bit tougher, since any comic with multiple writers/artists tend to vary in quality over the years. I'd say, let's go with specific runs.

You make a good point about the overcrowding. Very well, 20 nominations it is (for now).

Hope this cleared things up.

So, we would nominate by specific runs, not arcs? So, if I wanted to nominate some of Fables, I'm nominating the whole thing right? Ok. So, some of my nominations will probably be of things I haven't read the whole run of, but love some arcs of. Like Fables. I love what I've read, but I'm still really early in it.

I'll post my nominations soon.

LumRanmaYasha

I have one more question: are comic strips like Calvin & Hobbes or Peanuts eligible?

In any case, here are some of my initial nominations to get us started:

1. The Adventures of Tintin by Herge
2. American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang
3. Asterix by Rene Goscinny & Albert Uderzo
4. Deadpool Killogy by Cullen Bunn
5. Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi
6. A Silent Voice by Yoshitoki Oima
7. Ashita no Joe by Ikki Kajiwara & Tetsuya Chiba
8. Barefoot Gen by Keiji Nakazawa
9. Buddha by Osamu Tezuka
10. Urusei Yatsura by Rumiko Takahashi

I'll add more after seeing what other people decide to nominate.

They are. Oh, and before anyone asks; the same goes for web-comics.

Might as well begin nominating myself. By the way, I will update the OP with a list of all the nominations later.

Corto Maltese by Hugo Pratt
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind by Hayao Miyazaki
Aama by Frederik Peeters
District 14 by Pierre Gabus & Romuald Reutimann

12. Brawl in the Family by Matthew Taranto
13. Calvin & Hobbes by Bill Watterson

Whoops, is the limit 20 now?

It is. Although, I'm considering extending it to 30.

A few more comics from me:

Stinz by Donna Barr
The Desert Peach by Donna Barr
Digger by Ursula Vernon
Finder by Carla Speed McNeil
Les 7 Vies de l'Epervier by Patrick Cothias & André Juillard
Ibicus by Pascal Rabaté (based on the novel by Alexis Tolstoy)
Blast by Manu Larcenet

I've decided to prioritize more obscure (for lack of a better term) comics, since I figure that titles like Monster and Scalped will be nominated anyway and in the case of the latter, my hunch was correct.

Correct. Oh, and don't worry about not having read the whole run of a comic, I haven't finished all the ones I've nominated.

Ok, editing now. Edit: I see you already put 20 in. Good, I was going to ask to stop at Thrillkiller and leave the rest for later.
