LD Talkback #205

The Brosnan era begins with easily one of the best Bonds ever, no question.

This is the biggest tease in all of film.

A damn-near flawless Bond film and a perfect opening for Brosnan. But the rest of his tenure as 007 doesn't come close.
Life is not about the second chances. It's about a little mouse and his voyage to an exciting new land. That, my friend, is what life is.

Sir, do you have any Warrants?
I got their first CD, but you can't have it, motherfucker!

Goldeneye is my Bond movie. Of course I've only seen Casino Royale (love it as much as GE. Martin Campbell rocks) and that bad Halle Berry one but GE holds a special place in my heart. I love the beginning of this movie so much. I'll never get tired of it.

That's what I hear. Ah well, there was Everything Or Nothing, which I'm sure is better than any Bond film between Goldeneye and Casino Royale.

I really liked GE when I first saw it and the subsequent times that I viewed it afterwards, but I haven't seen the film in over 5 years so I don't remember it that well. I guess I'll be the one to point out the obvious, though, in that GE is one of those few rare cases in which the video game is remembered more than the actual movie itself. While I do find the game to be a tad bit overrated, I do think it has a lot to do with having GE being such a well-remembered Bond title.

Its worth noting that this movie was also my introduction into the James Bond series, as it was my very first Bond movie ever. For that reason, I can't help but think of Pierce Brosnan whenever I think of Bond, not to say that he's the most indentifiable actor for the role, as he's not (and you can clearly tell by the much poorer reception of his subsequent bond films), but he still the first Bond that I ever saw in action.

Yeah, the belief is that your first Bond is typically your favorite and the one you recognize as the character the most. Kind of the same thing with the Doctor, too.

Goldeneye was my first Bond as well, but I guess I'm a little different in that Connery is my go-to 007. But that may very well change if Skyfall kicks ass.

I must be ashamed to admit that the first time I saw Goldeneye was on cable when they were showing Bond movies in preparation for QoS. Still, a good first impression for a poor era.

I saw it when I get the DVD from a library about 7 years ago. I was blown away at how good it was. In fact, I thought it was better than even its own hype. I love when that happens.

The only thing this movie lacks is a good score.  Sorry, not a fan of what Eric Serra tried here.

In contrast, it's my favorite Bond soundtrack. My blood gets pumping during the action scene after Gottfried says "You'll blow the gas tanks!" because of the music.
