My one regret about the Thaumatropy podcast's absence is that we didn't do something like this.

To illustrate how much I love these two hours of a podcast, Zac Bertschy apparently told the creators this.

In a thread marked little things in movies that bug you:

The strong independent woman.

It bugs me that in any action movie, there are only two options for women. The damsel in distress or the mighty woman who must assure that the audience every 5 minutes that even though she has ovaries, she still can knock you out. The latter usually involves a scene similar to the following.

Woman steps up to firing range.
Douche: *Scoff* Woman. *shoots target*
Woman: *shoots same target, but better* Man.
Audience: YEAH! YOU TELL HIM! WOOOOOOO

It just would be nice to see complicated women, as opposed to Whedon Trope Clones.

Asking for complicated characters in a modern action movie is like asking for complicated characters in porn.

Though yes, both of those archetypes are extremely played out and boring.

I mean yeah, the whole "You sure you can handle this, being a girl and all?" is a dumb cliche. But do recent movies even do this anymore? I haven't heard that type of dialogue in any of the action movies I've seen lately. Regardless, what he said still sounds misogynistic.

Yeah, I haven't heard that kind of dialogue recently either.

The guy does sound like he takes offense to women being cool in movies, so your analysis may be correct. Especially since he writes "strong independent woman" like it's a bad thing.
