What do all these series have in common?

They're all dead.

Goodbye, Konami. If you can't succeed with IPs like this, then you shouldn't be in the industry. Extra hate points for dragging Hudson down with you.

At least Capcom seem to be improving, and in their case I hope they turn things around. I've never cared about Konami since the NES days ended. MGS and Silent Hill were the only things holding them up, and their utter laziness with their numerous catalog of games is why I don't really care if they somehow crumbled (so long as their IPs went somewhere good). They apparently own a lot of slot machines and pachinko games (and I think they still produce certain animes if I'm not mistaken), so I don't think they'll ever completely fall.  :immad:  :bleh:

Konami and Sega are actually both doing quite well financially because of pachinko and such. They're only incompetent at publishing video games.

Studios the HD generation buried. (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=459131)

But that isn't Konami's (or Capcom's, or Square Enix's) problem. Their problem comes from a total lack of direction and respect for their IPs or fanbases. Square-Enix seems to be turning around, and Capcom seems to be flailing in the wind, but Konami has mismanaged every single IP of theirs (that's not Metal Gear) since the PS2 generation ended.

I think Square-Enix is a good publisher. In fact, one of the better ones these days. They just happen to be good at producing everything except JRPGs, it seems. :D

QuoteWe saw with these games that even people who buy physical games are motivated to buy extra content. The success of Power pro especially has motivated us to actively push more of our popular series onto mobile than ever before.
QuoteGaming has spread to a number of platforms, but at the end of the day, the platform that is always closest to us, is mobile. Mobile is where the future of gaming lies.
QuoteWe hope that our overseas games such as MGSV and Winning Eleven continue to do well, but we are always thinking about how to push our franchises onto mobile there too.
QuoteWith multiplatform games, there's really no point in dividing the market into categories anymore. Mobiles will take on the new role of linking the general public to the gaming world.

Just 3 and a half months left until Phantom Pain comes out... Konami can go bankrupt after that for all I care.

I wonder if the bad blood between them and Kojima was due to a difference of opinion in regards to this mobile garbage.

I really do hope there is a mobile game crash in the near future. Companies like Konami deserve it quite badly.

Sell Axelay, Salamander / Life Force, and Gradius to Treasure and Castlevania, Rocket Knight Adventures, Sunset Riders, Goemon, and Contra to Nintendo and get out of gaming. You won't be missed.

Also, Silent Hill. That can't be sold to Nintendo, but they need to sell it to someone. Someone we can trust with that type of game.

Of course, there's also Metal Gear... and it's time we lay it to rest. Just let it end with MSGV, a game that will supposedly be fantastic. Let Metal Gear end with more dignity than Konami.

Nintendo can get Silent Hill and Suikoden (and rehire Murayama to manage it) and outsource them to the Fatal Frame team and Monolith Soft.

Guaranteed the series would have futures at that point.

QuoteComing from series creator Akira Sakuma...
- Momotaro Dentetsu is "officially finished"
- one Konami employee in particular is blamed for killing the franchise
- "Konami hasn't gotten in touch with me at all. This is how they've tossed me aside for a while now. I'm announcing here that Momotaro Dentetsu is officially done. Ishikawa at Konami squelched everything."

Quote from: http://gematsu.com/2015/06/40-minute-metal-gear-solid-v-phantom-pain-e3-2015-gameplay-walkthroughWhile it is true that a few micro-transactions options do exist, the entire game has been carefully balanced to be enjoyable with or without using these options. There's no pay-to-win option. Rest assured that every single item, weapon, and mission in the game is available to all players without paying a single cent. However, due to the sheer scale of the game and the time required to explore it all, micro-transactions were added as a completely optional feature for players who might not be able to spend as much time with the game. Nothing more, nothing less.

That's better, I suppose. As long as they aren't purposefully gimping aspects of the game, it's all... well, not good, but fine.

I have a feeling that Phantom Pain went enormously over budget, and that Kojima outright refused to do any more Metal Gear games after its release. I doubt Konami would have taken well to either of those things.

Title: Re: The Death of Konami

Well, if he really did spend 7 years working on a single game while using up more of their funds than they were comfortable allowing in the process, then refused to continue pumping out installments in their only money-making franchise, I can kind of understand their point of view.

But it's shortsighted. No matter how much money was spent on it, MGS5 is bound to become one of the most critically and commercially successful games of all time. And Kojima's name alone sells games by the truckload, especially in the west. They could have had their cake and eaten it too if they'd let him stick around for Silent Hills while simultaneously farming out endless MGS sequels to some shitty 3rd party development studio.
Title: Re: The Death of Konami

Konami is looking for an excuse to dump their traditional gaming division. It's dead weight and isn't profitable enough. Get rid of Kojima and that's it for the traditional gaming division. Anything else is just an excuse to finally cut him loose and scrap the whole thing. No one else is left there.

Good news: Silent Hills is back!
Bad news: It's a pachinko machine.

All that's left is that Metal Gear pachinko machine.

Boy I wish someone good would buy their IPs.

I don't mind Metal Gear dying with Konami if Kojima really intended the upcoming game to be the last in the series.

Then again, if Konami keeps Metal Gear, will that mean the series will never see any ports again?

Konami Heritage Survey (http://mobilesurvey.blicx.com/)

I have no idea why Silent Hill and Metal Gear are not there, but look at the ones they included. They even included Bomberman. Those franchises deserve so much more. I don't know if this is "official", but I figured it worth posting here anyway. All those properties deserve better.

The retail version of MGSV (PC version) is a total ripoff. (http://www.destructoid.com/the-only-file-on-the-pc-retail-version-of-the-phantom-pain-is-a-steam-installer-308547.phtml)

You should probably specify that it's specifically the PC retail version of the game that's a total fuck-up on Konami's part.

That doesn't make the act any less despicable, but it is a tad misleading to refer to the retail release in general, which would also include the consoles.

Putting that aside, this kind of practice is so disgusting that it should be against the law.
