This is about a week old, but I decided to create a topic for it on here. Scamp over at The Cart Driver compiled what could very well be called "The Rotten Tomatoes of Anime;" a listing of over 2141 anime titles based on the opinions of 82 different anime critics. The results are quite interesting, to say the least. So what were the top 100 most critically acclaimed anime?...

It's interesting, at the very least, and obviously I love the fact that Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer is the 34th most critically acclaimed anime among these 82 critics (as well as Maison Ikkoku being #92)  .  I have some misgivings about the whole thing, especially the fact that Bobobo is much too low, but overall it's a good gauge of opinions.

It's nice seeing Cowboy Bebop, Monster, and Planetes so high, but I'm not sure the point of putting movies with series. They don't have the same intent or purpose.

Why is New Challenger in the top 10, while the first season of HnI is ranked leagues bellow it? Is that really bases on 82 reviews, or does the site just rank the series by the average of the scores, while not taking into account how many people have actually reviewed it? If it's the latter, then this list is really unreliable, and a complete joke.

And yes, no Yu Yu Hakusho is fucking ridiculous.

Hell, it's even missing Hunter X Hunter.

It's a metacritic-style thing based on the thoughts of various anime bloggers. Some of them will love your favorite shows and some of them will hate them. This is not an accurate representation of quality, it just shows the diverse opinions of said bloggers. And for what it's worth, this list is far better than MAL's top anime section.

Anime bloggers can be an elitist and contrarian sort. I'm not saying their opinions are necessarily bad or wrong, because shit, I am an anime blogger, and some of my opinions definitely do not match the mainstream at all, but many of these guys look down on shounen and other "fun" shows like I did 3-5 years ago.

I...didn't put up the full list. Just what made the top 100. 

This isn't an objective list, btw. It's like a "Rotten Tomatoes" of anime. It's based on the average reception of the anime based on the number of people who have seen it. If you had checked the link, you would have seen there is a number reflecting how many people reviewed that anime and an average score (based on a ten pt scale) of it's critical reception based on that. In any case, you don't need to take this t so seriously, this is just a gauge of the general opinions among the english anime-watching community (or, at the very least, anime reviewers).


In any case, a new, revised list made by Kaidan has been put up. This one doubles the amount of reviewers taken into consideration, and is separated into lists of well-known (read: more than 11 reviewers have seen them) titles and obscure (read: less than 11 reviewers have seen them) titles.  Since you guys seem to be adverse to checking out links and scrolling down to find things, I'll just have to post the ranks of all the series people here give a shit about, plus the ones of some bad/unpopular ones for comparisons sake. 

Here are some details about it, first.

Notes:

I polled 161 internet anime writers in total, including all of Scamp?s original 82. This list counts all anime titles with at least 12 total anicritic entries.
I was pretty lenient and included retired, inactive, and infrequent bloggers. They just needed to write on a website more substantial than a picture tumblr and have a MAL profile I could find. They are all listed on the first sheet of my excel spreadsheet.
I only counted entries by bloggers who had seen a ?representative? amount of an anime. Obviously a completed (and rated) title is valid, but also those that
1) counted at least 24 episodes seen with a rating OR
2) counted at least 25% of total episodes seen with a rating
That means for a 12 episode series, at least 3 episodes are necessary to count. For a 26 episode series, at least 7. For a 52 episode series, at least 13. The 24 episode minimum was to count super long shounen series and sitcoms.
All lists were polled between Oct 28th and Nov 1st. It doesn?t reflect any rating changes individuals have made since then.
This list is only as authoritative as you want it to be. Many folks aren?t super serious about ratings, and the 10-point scale means different things to different people. The only generally agreed upon standard is that 10 is ?good? and 1 is ?bad?. What comes between is a crapshoot.
The overall average rating across all eligible entries is 6.711.

Admittedly, Yu Yu Hakusho's fandom has kind of dwindled over the past few years. Understandable if it doesn't have that much of a presence on the blogging scene.

And since this list comes from a guy I genuinely like, as well how he enunciates that it's subjective, I can't really complain. Especially since an anime I hate is at third worst.

I'd do a review of it, but nobody really cares enough about my opinions to take notice of it.

Later on when I do my series about reviewing story arcs, I'll make sure to give Dark Tournament and Chapter Black some great pieces, though.

303 out of 1500+ anime titles really isn't that low, honestly, so I've got no problem with it even though Trigun is my second favorite anime and all that. Of course, I still enjoy seeing Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer and Maison Ikkoku so high up (especially considering how they should be less popular than most of the stuff in this list because so few people seem to know/talk about them, unlike series like One Piece or Hunter X Hunter or even Trigun). I didn't post it, but on the "obscure" anime list the Urusei Yatsura anime ranks #10 with a score of 8.2/10, which also makes me very happy.
