We have a thread for Looney Tunes and Tom & Jerry, so why not one for the cartoons from Walt's days?
The ever-awesome Yowp, normally a Hanna-Barbera expert (which really deserves a thread of it's own (http://yowpyowp.blogspot.com/)), posted this short (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZgiVicpZGk) on his Facebook the other day.
It's one of the Goofy shorts which looks at society at the time while admittingly not having Goofy keep his traditional traits. It's still a funny short, probably a bit harsher than a good deal of Disney shorts from the time, which makes it such a fresh change of pace. Check out Goofy's facial expressions from about 1:37-1:42. For a studio that typically tries to stay as on-model as possible, there are some great shots in here, almost Warner-ish.
Yeah, this one is a pretty good short. I love watching as "Mr. Wheeler" flies off the handle behind the wheel of the car, and I remember the bit where he's racing the other cars and crashes into the light post was probably my favorite scene as a kid watching it on old-school Disney Channel.
Anyways, you want I to post some shorts? I'm not necessarily going to post my favorites, just some good ones that I think people could start out with.

Der Fuehrer's Face (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iumEGAUceDg)(I love the wartime cartoons, both from Warners and Disney; there's just so much history here)
All great ones.
Also, my first article is up. (http://arevelationfeechurs.blogspot.com/2011/02/year-of-disneys-shorts-set-1-by-avaitor.html)
Comments?
Nice article. I remember seeing some of 'em, but it's been a while.
Number 2 is up (http://arevelationfeechurs.blogspot.com/2011/02/year-of-disneys-shorts-set-2-by-avaitor.html), a little earlier than I was expecting.
Comments?
After linking to "Friend Like Me" and reminding kids in my Comm class that Walt died 25 years before Aladdin was released, I feel like watching it again. I'll pull my DVD out later.
Good stuff. Love reading this stuff.
Hockey Homicide may be the greatest single thing ever committed to celluloid. Yeah screw you Citizen Kane.
The next one is up. (http://arevelationfeechurs.blogspot.com/2011/03/year-of-disneys-shorts-set-3-by-avaitor.html)
You guys taking anything from these so far? Since I'm a quarter of the way done from my series, I'd like to get some feedback on these as of now
I'm enjoying them, but I think you put one too many "Mickey"s in the Mickey's Rival summary.
*double checks*
Huh...
You didn't see anything. :>
Another month, another entry. (http://arevelationfeechurs.blogspot.com/2011/04/year-of-disneys-shorts-set-4-by-avaitor.html)
Thoughts?
I love Goofy's Gymnastics. I watched that last year for the first time since I was a kid. I laughed SO HARD when the woman hit Goofy with her shoe.
Here's this month's entry. (http://arevelationfeechurs.blogspot.com/2011/05/year-of-disneys-shorts-set-5-by-avaitor.html)
On the plus side, I got a copy of the Oswald Treasures release for free thanks to Disney Movie Rewards. I might try to find some room to go over that, as well.
Next set's finally up. (http://arevelationfeechurs.blogspot.com/2011/07/year-of-disneys-shorts-set-6-by-avaitor.html)
Already looking over this month's, as well.
I was wondering when you'd do the next one! Guess it got delayed from June due to our big list. I actually don't think I've seen any of the shorts in question this time.
Yeah, I put it on hold to focus on the list and my studies. I just took a little more of a break than I probably should have, though.
New one's up. (http://arevelationfeechurs.blogspot.com/2011/08/year-of-disneys-shorts-set-7-by-avaitor.html)
Sorry these are so brief. I feel like no one reads these, anyway.
No, I find these fun to read. I just don't have anything proper to say to it.
Yeah, I read them too. The only thing is that with a brief description and a little words on it there isn't really much to respond. Maybe if you dug up into the production of the shorts, or explored some of the history during the time they were made...
That's something I'd really like to do, but I think it might be a little harder t do that with Disney's shorts than Warner's, since they haven't been analyzed as much. That, and I do purposely try to keep these brief, so they don't seem like too much to go through.
If I keep on getting such short set like this again though, I might try to dig up more info on the cartoons. I'm sure if i look hard enough, I can find some tidbits you may not expect for some of them.
Nah, I like reading them as well. I guess just like everyone else, I don't have much to say.
Really, I'm wayyyyy behind when it comes to a lot Disney's classic shorts though, and many of these I haven't seen in a really long time (or, at all, in some cases). I've been trying to get caught up through Youtube, though. The ones I've been making a point to watch are mostly through recommendations by other people, and your blog for these is one source I've been using.
So yeah... keep 'em up, I say.
Hey guys, I'll tell you this now- no feature this month. I've literally got nothing to write about.
See you next month, most likely.
Maybe you should try to find the more odd and obscure Disney shorts, and figure out what makes them stand out from the norm.
Well, I might be doing that later on, like at the end of the year. Stick around.
A quick break sounds good for me. This way, I can take some time to figure out what I should do with this series, and if I want to try something similar next year. And with the Ludovico Trials and other potential reviews and features coming down the pipeline, it's not like the blogs will seem empty if I take the month off.
Looks like I have another month off. I think I'm going to retool this series a little bit now.
Barnes and Noble has a Mickey book titled "Mickey Mouse Race to Death Valley", which is a collection of Floyd Gottfredson comics from back in the 30s. I'm sitting here looking at it right now, but it'll have to wait until at least tomorrow when I get paid. But I really do want it, it looks so awesome.
Actually it looks like there are two of these collections so far, with a third one coming. The Barnes and Noble I'm at only has the first collection though.
I've seen those before, and they look very impressive. I'd love to collect them myself. Gottfredson's stuff is incredible, if you haven't read it before.
Picked it up, and so far it's pretty cool. Gonna definitely be on the lookout for the second book, and of course the third one which comes out in May.
Also picked up this: http://www.amazon.com/Walt-Disney-Treasury-Donald-Duck/dp/1608866564/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1329439681&sr=1-2
