Title: Courage the Cowardly Dog
Post by: Avaitor on June 28, 2011, 07:12:26 PM
Let me start this thread off by posting this. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbKby_0kHKg) Easily one of my favorite vids from that era.

Anyway, favorite episodes/ones that freaked you out the most?

Freaked me out? The pilot is pretty creepy.

I still think the pilot short was the perfect episode of the show. If the rest of the series was like that, it would be more of a favorite for me.

Courage was in the same boat as Pinky and the Brain was for me; great in small doses, such as a single episode or two, but much more than that the story and premise gets stale.

That, and the show had some of the most twisted material I've ever seen in a cartoon. until Billy and Mandy that is(that episode with substitute teacher and the mutant chickens still creeps me the fuck out).

The pilot did have its charm. I loved watching it premiere with my family. It's been forever since I've seen it and I plan on watching it again soon

I can't find out too much about it right now (this was taken from Jerry Beck's FB group, and my Google results have been disappointing), but I do know that John Dilworth is involved, which should make this different from the recent PPG special and Johnny Bravo in Bollywood.

The designs translate pretty well in CG, and the animation seems rightfully vibrant, although I'm not sure if I like Eustace's new VA. But I'm excited.

If that's the case, I'm tempted to go grab a copy today. I'll have to think about it...

I think this might have been the best of the Cartoon Cartoons.

Yeah, $20 at WalMart. Not too bad, so I gladly picked it up. You should definitely consider it if you like the show.
Title: Re: Courage the Cowardly Dog
Post by: LumRanmaYasha on August 13, 2014, 01:13:21 PM
Cool! I'll definitely pick one up later this week. I need to get the first season sometime too. Now that I don't have Boomerang anymore, and CN is starting to release more of these collections it seems, I should start picking up these season sets (though, I confess I wish they just made complete series sets for them like the Nicktoons have been getting, but I'll take what I can get).
Title: Re: Courage the Cowardly Dog
Post by: Avaitor on August 13, 2014, 01:29:59 PM
Well, there is a complete series set for Powerpuff Girls, but ultimately you have to take what you can get.
Title: Re: Courage the Cowardly Dog
Post by: LumRanmaYasha on August 13, 2014, 01:44:43 PM
I know. I already have that.  ;)

If nothing else, I want a complete Ed, Edd, n'Eddy or Billy and Mandy set too. But at this point, I'd still settle for seeing anymore of their seasons being released on dvd at all, so hopefully that happens sometime.
Title: Re: Courage the Cowardly Dog
Post by: Avaitor on August 13, 2014, 07:51:54 PM
I really want those as well, but at this point, WHV seems to think that animation is only for kids. Jerry Beck had to fight to make the last Platinum Collection, and now that it's out, the Looney Tunes aren't getting any more nice sets like that in the near future.

And we're lucky that we're getting another season of Courage now, as well.

Bought Season 2. I'm surprised to see that they even went as far as to put a slipcase on this one.

I'm just so so happy to have The Tower Of Dr. Zalost on dvd.

I really should get around to collecting these DVDs, but on top of all of the other stuff that I want to buy,it probably won't happen anytime soon.
Title: Re: Courage the Cowardly Dog
Post by: Avaitor on August 19, 2014, 03:16:34 PM
I still haven't bought season 1, but I felt like I really should get this one as soon as I could to make sure that more sets come out. Not just for Courage, but the other CN series.

Aww shiiiiit, I just realized this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKbF033pUAE) was from Season 2. I had nightmares for weeks after seeing that as a kid. Still hard to believe this is the same guy (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0577329/) that plays Larry's psychiatrist on Curb.

.........but yeah, so getting this.

According to Dilworth, the specials are on hold. (http://spacemandilly.tumblr.com/post/103175597819/good-news-and-bad-news)

"The Fog of Courage" is online! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fI6DDJHwNhE)

Not bad. Yes, that is Wallace Shawn as Eustace, and he does a pretty good job. And I feel that the CG sticks to the show's cartoony nature quite well, although Muriel's design is weird. But still, this is a welcome compliment to the show.

edit: I said Wallace Shawn did Courage? wtf
Title: Re: Courage the Cowardly Dog
Post by: Nel_Annette on January 09, 2015, 08:16:44 PM
Much as I love Wallace Shawn, he doesn't really fit as Eustace that well. Rest of it was pretty good though.
Title: Re: Courage the Cowardly Dog
Post by: Spark Of Spirit on January 09, 2015, 09:25:35 PM
Yeah, Muriel's 3D design looks weird and Wallace Shawn as Eustace sounds strange, but otherwise it was classic Courage weirdness.

Season 3 for February! (https://www.facebook.com/dvdnewsflash/photos/a.183888851677587.45074.183880418345097/917495958316869/?type=3&fref=nf)

Considering the gap between the releases, I was expecting the DVDs to be put on hold again, but this is a much shorter gap than the wait between the first and second sets. Hopefully we won't have to wait as long for the last season!
Title: Re: Courage the Cowardly Dog
Post by: Avaitor on January 06, 2016, 10:03:39 PM
The season 3 set is still happening, and while this says it's coming in March (http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Courage-Cowardly-Dog-Season-3/21883), I think I've read that the date has changed to June.
Title: Re: Courage the Cowardly Dog
Post by: Avaitor on March 13, 2016, 01:53:44 PM
With the season 3 set coming soon, I decided to order the first season from Amazon. It's here now, and I think that when I'm done with season 2 of The Flintstones, I'll switch that out with Courage for my quiet night time watch.

Can't wait to own the next season!
Title: Re: Courage the Cowardly Dog
Post by: Avaitor on August 11, 2016, 08:03:56 AM
Wow, this looks all but official. (https://www.amazon.com/Cartoon-Network-Hall-Fame-Cowardly/dp/B01K5N185M/)

And you know what this means? We will now have all four seasons of Courage the Cowardly Dog on DVD. And we won't even have to wait too long for this one! Remember when we had that 4-year gap between the first 2 releases, and thought the series was done for on home video like most other CN classics?
Title: Re: Courage the Cowardly Dog
Post by: LumRanmaYasha on August 11, 2016, 09:58:58 PM
Awesome! I gotta get around to collecting these. If only other CN classics could have their runs all out on dvd. Hopefully they'll look at doing some of those next now that Courage is done. It's baffling to me that it's the 20th anniversary of Dexter's Laboratory, their very first Cartoon Cartoon, and they still haven't put out the entire thing on dvd.
Title: Re: Courage the Cowardly Dog
Post by: Avaitor on September 27, 2016, 11:26:46 PM
So apparently preorders were pulled from Amazon a few days ago for the last set, and it's only available from second-hand sellers now. I can't help but wonder if it's been delayed.

I really hope not.
Title: Re: Courage the Cowardly Dog
Post by: Avaitor on October 03, 2016, 07:57:05 PM
I found season 4 at Barnes & Noble today! Apparently it's also available to order from Warner's site, but $25 plus S&H is a bit of cash. B&N had it for $25 at retail, which ended up being a little less thanks to my membership.

Still, it's nice to finally have the whole series of Courage. It feels right. Now can we get the rest of Ed, Edd n' Eddy, Dexter's Lab, and/or Johnny Bravo soon?
Title: Re: Courage the Cowardly Dog
Post by: Avaitor on November 14, 2016, 05:24:45 PM
Now that I've gotten around to watching the show the whole way through, I think that the last season has to be the best! The last couple of episodes were especially particularly strong, right down to its perfect finale.

It's funny, Courage wasn't a favorite growing up, but I really have grown to appreciate it in the past few years, even more than Dexter's Lab and Powerpuff Girls, which are a little too safe for me today. Not every episode does much for me, but I really like a good third. There's just a lot to enjoy here.

Still bitter that Dilworth wanted to bring Courage back, but CN was like "Naw, man. Shitty PPG reboot that we market like hell for one month before exiling it to early afternoon."
Title: Re: Courage the Cowardly Dog
Post by: LumRanmaYasha on November 15, 2016, 12:05:08 PM
A new Courage supervised by Dilworth would've had more potential than the new PPG for sure.

Courage still holds up so well, no matter what age you are. It's no surprise that CN kept it around in reruns for years after it ended, even after they stopped airing all the other original Cartoon Cartoons.
Title: Re: Courage the Cowardly Dog
Post by: Avaitor on November 15, 2016, 01:24:03 PM
The thing that sucks about CN turning Dilworth down is all he wanted to do were two specials. That would take nothing, but CN isn't interested.

Also, have you heard that he's been posting commentaries online? (http://www.animationscoop.com/creator-john-dilworth-posts-online-commentary-for-courage-the-cowardly-dog/) I really should get around to listening to some of these.

Since its leaving Netflix soon, I've been doing a bunch of episodes in no real order. There's some great episodes. I was surprised by how much I liked the Demon in a Mattress episode compared to Freaky Fred. Which wasn't bad, but it didn't wow me like I thought it would. It always freaked me out as a kid. I was curious how much I'd like it now.

I don't think he'd be able to reveal a project like that on a random facebook post without breaking some kind of disclosure agreement or getting him in trouble, so I'm betting on it either being a joke or something very early in development that hasn't been greenlit and might not see it the light of day. I wouldn't get my hopes up, but it'd be cool if it gets made.

A Courage prequel would be weird though. I assume it would probably follow him during the period between when his parents got shot into space and he was adopted, but I don't know if I want to watch a Courage show without Eustace or Muriel...

It's official- Before Courage is a thing (https://twitter.com/CNschedules/status/1054753886500806658?fbclid=IwAR0kEpDOORvMWjJO7Lq8nYR03QgB_BNIqJet4_vUauBlP1Ituq5EpK2fato).

So what will this entail? Courage's life before Eustace and Muriel? But that's what "Remembrance of Courage Past" was for, and I don't want that. Eustace and Muriel before Courage? I don't want that either- who does? I'm all for a continuation, especially with Dilworth on board, but a prequel sounds like a weird idea. But again, I trust Dilworth enough to keep my ears open.

It only seemed like a matter of time, tbh.

I'm somewhat surprised that Courage is the primary CN classic to have the kind of legs it has, give or take PPG and Samurai Jack. Meanwhile, we're still waiting for Warner to release more of Dexter's Lab, Johnny Bravo, Ed, Edd n' Eddy on DVD. At least the first one was on Hulu, and is reportedly going to be on HBO Max on day one.

I almost never go out of my way to watch trailers, but I had to see this one.

The animation isn't 100%, but I mean, methods and aesthetics change over time, so I'm not too bugged. I'm just excited to see more Courage, and making it such a no-brainer crossover is just icing.

Yeah, that really stings.

I don't know if the prequel is still happening, either. It would be really disappointing if that was cancelled in favor of a project he has no involvement with.

I'm more curious to see how they're gonna handle the more supernatural elements of Courage with Scooby Doo, since a lot of a modern Scooby Doo productions tend to downplay the supernatural elements in favor of them being hoaxes.

Yeah, I haven't even thought about that.

I recall skimming an article with Maxwell Atoms, who suggested that the franchise goes through cycles of whether it believes in the supernatural or considers it to be fake. Maybe this will be the start of the franchise going back to real paranormal phenomenons? Or maybe a one-off? Because I would be really disappointed if this movie pulled a Return to Zombie Island or Curse of the 13th Ghost and retcons Courage in the process.

Just watched the Scooby-Doo crossover. I gotta say, they did a great job paying tribute to Courage!

My biggest concern with this movie was if they would pull the "fake monster" ending that the Scooby DTVs have been doing this past decade or so, and doing that with Courage, of all things, would have been a travesty. I'm proud to report that they didn't go this route. Also, Jeff Bergman is great as Eustace after his two previous VAs have passed on.

If you want one last adventure with Courage, this is a great way to go out.

Sounds great!

I haven't had much free time this past week, but I'm hoping that I can go to Target after work tomorrow and get a copy.
