-----------
My votes:
Bridge of Birds - One of the best fantasy novels I've read.
Animal Farm
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
The Black Cauldron
Robinson Crusoe
Haven't read the Prydain books since I was a kid, but I remember enjoying them. Same goes for Robinson.
The First Man In Rome
The Master and Margarita
A Storm of Swords - The best book in the series
The Curious Incident...
Congo
By the way, I wonder if its necessary to write the title of and author of each novel when both perfectly visible on the covers. I don't know, it seems a bit superfluous.
How long will each match be up?
Anyways, I can't vote on the second match right now, but I can on the first:
Robinson Crusoe
Animal Farm
Bridge of Birds
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
The Black Cauldron
A Storm of Swords
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time
Congo
The First Man In Rome
The Master and Margarita
Animal Farm
Bridge of Birds
Robinson Crusoe
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
The Black Cauldron
The Black Cauldron
Robinson Crusoe
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Animal Farm
Bridge of Birds

How long will each match be up?
Haven't thought that much about it. 1-2 weeks, I guess.
To be honest, I don't think it's going to be possible to read every book during the time the tournament is going on. Personally, I'm going to pick and choose and prioritize some novels over others.
I just had to accidentally spark this tournament. You guys will be in here trying to read all of these books until the sun burns out. :il_hahaha:
I can only do the first for right now.
Robinson Crusoe
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
The Black Cauldron
Bridge of Birds
Animal Farm
Just a heads-up to tell you that I'm going to start counting the votes. The results will be up either tomorrow or later this week and then we'll move on to the next two matches.

My votes:
Fifth Business - The first novel in one of my favorite literary trilogies
Night Watch - My favorite Discworld novel. Although, Small Gods is a close runner-up
David Copperfield
Lucifer's Hammer
Ellen Foster
The Idiot
Foundation and Empire
The Prisoner of Zenda
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
The Catcher in the Rye
I haven't read The Catcher in the Rye. I know I probably should at some point, since its such a well-known novel, but I haven't managed to work up any interest in it.
I'm going to skip the first one for now, but I'll go with the same order as Pharass for the second.
Catcher in the Rye honestly isn't that good once you grow up. I can barely stand it now.
I hate Ellen Foster, and I hated my school even more for forcing me to read it back in 9th grade. I just wanted to put that out there.
Anyways, this, like presumably with most rounds, is where I must shamefully admit that I've read so few of these books that I really can't vote on anything.

I thought it was terrible even before I grew up. :D
I've never read it, but that one South Park episode about it is hilarious.
I'll go with the same ranking as Pharass in the first match. Just so this game continues.

Thank you, Avaitor.
I've decided to keep the matches open for a few more days (probably until Wednesday), but then I'm going to move on to the next two. Just a heads-up for those of you who haven't voted yet.
To be honest, I think that a week per round would suffice, just to give some people enough time to vote in case they are away for a few days or something like that. Unlike the movie thread, most of us can't read so many novels within just a few weeks if we haven't already read most of them in a round, because most novels are pretty long and I'm sure all of us lead fairly busy lives.
Just a suggestion, anyways, since otherwise this competition will take forever to complete.

My votes:
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy: A strong candidate for the title of best spy novel.
Dracula
The Napoleon of Notting Hill
Second Foundation
The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing
Flashman and the Redskins:
The Flashman Papers is among my favorite book-series and this volume is (along with
Flashman at the Charge in my opinion the best one. If you want well-researched, well-written historical fiction and don't mind spending your time in the company of an utterly detestable, yet extremely entertaining protagonist, I recommend seeking these books out.
A Clash of Kings
The Old Man and the Sea
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
The Great Brain
I haven't read
Octavian Nothing or
The Great Brain, but the former sounds interesting; I'll check it out when I have the time.
A Clash of Kings

The Brothers Karamazov, The Outsiders, The Three Musketeers and Game of Thrones move on to the next round.
From what I read in the Greatest Live-Action Movie Tournament it seems that people are getting a bit burned out on these type of threads, so I'm wondering if maybe I should put this on hold until interest has been renewed? Let me know what you guys think.
Nah, this one's already been ongoing for a while, so I'd still probably see it through to the end. I just meant to say that I probably wouldn't be interested in doing any new ones for a while.
Oh, please keep this one going! It's still fun to keep up with. If anything, this one will help to be the end of an era, which is not a bad thing at all.
The people have spoken! (the people in this case being Avaitor and Dr.E-k). The tournament shall continue. On to the next two matches:

The Castle of Llyr: 10 pts

Switch Goblet and Castle of Llyr in my rankings. That should allow Things Fall Apart to move on

My Votes:
Flashman at the Charge: Perhaps the best book in the series. In this volume, anti-hero Flashman finds himself caught up in the horrors of the Crimean War and later as a p.o.w. in Russia. As usual, MacDonald Fraser's mix of fact and fiction is top-notch and this book introduces both one of the series' best villains and heroines in Captain Count Ignatieff and The Silk One, respectively. Ignatieff is based on a historical figure, whether or not the same can be said about The Silk One, I don't know, but she's great and one of the many reasons why you should read this book.
Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norell: Been ages since I last read this one, I remember it being great though.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
The Haunting of Hill House: Haven't read it, but I know that its considered a classic of the horror genre.
Out of the Silent Planet
Shogun
Frankenstein
Wise Blood
Love In The Ruins
Raiser of Gales: Haven't read any of the Vampire Hunter D novels, I've seen both movies though. Didn't care much for the first one, but found Bloodlust to be an enjoyable watch.
I love the hell out of Bloodlust. It was probably my second favorite anime movie for years.
Oh boy, I might have to pass for right now.
Out of the Silent Planet

My votes:
Pawn in Frankincense - The fourth and best book in Dorothy Dunnett's The Lymond Chronicles. In Pawn in Frankincense, hero (or anti-hero) Francis Crawford and his allies journey into the heart of the Ottoman Empire in order to track down the villain from the previous novel. As usual, Dunnett's writing is impeccable and the confrontations between Lymond and the villain are among the most intense I've read, particularly the final one.

Sorry for the wait, guys. I've been looking over the second round and I've decided that this time, each match will be a one-on-one thing: Two novels enter, one novel leave, that sort of thing. My votes:
The Name of the Rose
The Count of Monte Cristo
The Idiot
The Man Who Was Thursday
Same as Pharass.
I'll pass on the first for right now, since I actually picked up a copy of The Name of the Rose the other day, and want to read it first.
But I'll vote for The Count of Monte Cristo for the other.
Since its been over two weeks since the last post and no more votes seem to be coming in, I think its about time we wrapped these matches up. I'm going to leave them open for one more day (just in case), but that's it.
Also, I'll try not to keep the next ones running for quite this long.
I'll just leave my other match unvoted for. I don't want to cause a tie, and while I'm still not done with The Name of the Rose, I'm not against it winning at all.

My votes:
One Hundred Years of Solitude
A Storm of Swords
Pass on the first.
I have such a deep nostalgic attachment to The Hobbit, and the kid in me wants to vote for it, but the adult part of me also adores A Storm of Swords as one of the best pieces of fantasy literature that I've ever read. For me it's truly a tough decision, but I have to go with A Storm of Swords on this one.
Speaking of The Hobbit, GRRM's Tales of Dunk and Egg really strikes me, tonally, as his spin on the more light-hearted adventure story that takes place many years before the much darker main story (much like The Hobbit compared to The Lord of the Rings).

Vs.

---------
My vote:
The Three Musketeers (sorry Martin, but I'll have to go with the classic on this one)
A Storm of Swords.
The Three Musketeers is a classic (and yes, I've read it), but I'm against the idea of something being undermined for not having as many years behind it. A Song of Ice and Fire is a modern classic, IMO. The themes of the repercussions of war and violence, in combination with the in-depth and nuanced character arcs makes this one of the most thought-provoking pieces of fiction that I have ever experienced, and A Storm of Swords is my favorite book in the series.
A Storm of Swords
Oh, don't get me wrong, A Storm of Swords is a great read and I wouldn't be opposed to it winning this match. Its just that I do have a slight preference for The Three Musketeers in this case.

Sorry, I should've been more clear. I know full well that you aren't being biased in the slightest. The Three Musketeers is a great book and I'm not the least bit opposed to it winning this round either. What I wrote was more intended to explain why I personally picked a more contemporary novel over a classic, and why I do so in general when it comes to this particular series. I wasn't in any way trying to belittle your opinion, and I apologize if my post came off that way.

ASoS very well. I apologize in return if I came off as being on the defensive.
I think its time to put the lid on the third round. Here are the results (note: in this case, each vote was worth 3 points):
The Three Musketeers: 6 pts
A Storm of Swords: 9 pts
A Storm of Swords move on to the next round.

What a match. Honestly, I'm not sure what was the toughest decision to make; deciding which novel between Cities and Swords that would occupy my top-spot or whether Twenty Thousand Leagues or Dracula should end up being sacrificed.
Damn....this is brutal. There is really no right or wrong choice here, regardless of the outcome.
A Storm of Swords- My favorite fantasy novel
And Then There Were None- My favorite suspense/mystery novel
A Tale Of Two Cities- My favorite Charles Dickens novel
Dracula- My favorite classic horror novel

Well, its been a long road, but we're finally here. In one corner, we have what is one of the finest works from the queen of mystery fiction. In the other, we have a work, whose influence can not be underestimated. Which one of them will be crowned the forum's greatest novel? Its up to you.
Final Round
The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

Vs.
And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
(https://s3.postimg.io/ipqd4dsv7/And_Then_There_Were_None_HB.jpg)
---------
This is hard, I'll have to think about this one for a bit.
These are literally two of my favorite books of all time. Both are tremendously worthy of being pitted against each other in the finals, and I'm especially pleased to see an Agatha Christie novel make it so far in this competition. I will also need to think on this one.
Two of my favorites, but I'm going to have to go with LOTR for simply sticking with me through so much.
Damn. You really can't go wrong with either here.
As much as Tolkien changed the game and still stands up, I think I'll go with ATTWN. It's fresher in my mind, but that's not really why- it's probably the best use of tension that I've felt in a piece of fiction, and a perfect example of a page turner. But really, you couldn't go wrong either way.
After giving it some thought, I've decided to go with And Then There Were None.
I think I'll go with And Then There Were None as well.
After putting some thought into it, I'm going with "And Then There Were None". On top of being a legitimately good mystery story, it's rich with nuanced characters all connected by a common theme of being haunted by their past crimes. It also comes off as the more accessible read.
I love TLOTR to death, but it has its flaws, and the story can stagnate at times. Either one of these books could be declared the best, but ATTWN takes the slight edge for me.
Well, its been ten days since the last vote and I don't think there's any reason to put this off any longer. It is with great honor that I hereby pronounce And Then There Were None as the winner of Animation Revelation's Greatest Novel Tournament. A well-earned victory for what is, arguably, the finest novel written by the uncrowned queen of the mystery/thriller genre.
During the course of this tournament I read several books that really deserved to be included (not to mention all the books I should've nominated that slipped my mind). There will always be great works of literature to discover and as such, I wouldn't mind doing this again, when enough time has passed. For now, however, I'd like to thank all of you for participating and I'll see you around.
A well-deserved winner! I ought to give the book a re-read in celebration.
Congratulations on finishing this tournament!
