It's probably because many of their hit shows are ending, so they need to pick up some new talent fast.

They do have time as most of them still have a year or two left. As far as I'm aware, there was no Upfront this year. They might have some new stuff already on the way, but perhaps not enough to fill out their schedule hence this opening.

Yes, it's a new pilot. Creator Owen Dennis was Tweeting about it days before the premiere. There's also another pilot called
Victor & Valentino, which aired on Halloween.

So far, there aren't any other pilots announced just yet. We'll have to wait and see.
