Title: Greatest Villain Tournament
Post by: Pharass on January 27, 2011, 10:31:19 AM
Friends..

We have gathered today for one purpose and one purpose only:

To Conquer The World!!

Well, ok, we shan't do that yet. Instead, we have gathered here to decide which villain in fiction; books, movies, television and what have you, is the biggest and baddest bad guy of them all. The first match of round 1 will commence shortly, but first allow me to explain how the game works. It's really quite simply, quod erat demonstandum:

Each match will consist of five villains. Your mission is simply to rank these villains in order from best to worst. I need not point out that 1st place= Best, do I. Sooner or later, two out of these five will proceed to the next round. As for the other three, well I'll leave that to your imagination.

Well then, my lovelies. Shall we begin?

Round 1, Match 1

Commander Rehalt Guou (Guyver)

(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages3.wikia.nocookie.net%2F__cb20101121043234%2Fguyver%2Fimages%2F6%2F6d%2FGuyot.png&hash=08354ddf1727cb23b1b0a3ba1aa6d3f4963de419)

Vs.

The Weeping Angels (Dr. Who)

(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdailypop.files.wordpress.com%2F2010%2F04%2Fweeping-angel-3.jpg&hash=bd75908821e418c14d71a26a96a7f38f2a047272)

Vs.

Magica de Spell

(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.metrobloggen.se%2FUserFiles%2F18.4989%2FImage%2Fmagica.gif&hash=47083d0540ff68b6c8966405869bf4665afacc39)

Vs.

Magneto (X-Men)

Vs.

(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.atom.rmutphysics.com%2Fcharud%2Foldnews%2F0%2F283%2Fmagneto1.jpg&hash=c4670d19319a21205f44a3648780df3da6fa6752)

Vicious (Cowboy Bebop)

(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.paraorkut.com%2Fimg%2Fanimepics%2Fimages%2Fv%2Fvicious_cowboy_bebop-12952.jpg&hash=bc3a3f3e70132d1327e4efe6b1489a462edcdd6b)

1. Magneto
2. Vicious: While I do prefer "Cowboy Bebop" over "X-Men",  I can't help but find Magneto a slightly more interesting villain than Vicious. With that said, this snake in human form is unsettling enough to gain second place.
3. Magica de Spell: Aside from Glomgold, Magica is definitely my favorite of Scrooge's adversaries. Incidentally, my favorite comic featuring her is the one in which she has a wand that will cause whoever it's used on to forget the next word he hears. To wit: If the affected hears the word "walk", he will forget how to walk and has to crawl on his belly. Great stuff!
4. The Weeping Angels: I've seen their first episode, pretty spooky stuff.
5. Commander Guou: I've only seen a few episodes of "Guyver" (the 2005 animé that is, I haven't seen any of the other versions) but so far, I really like the "evil mastermind" vibe this guy gives off . Plus, look at that hair; it just screams villain. Or  maybe "Aunt May", I'm not sure.

1- Magneto (Probably my favorite villain in the game.)
2- Magica (Doesn't stand much of a chance, but she's always been my favorite foe of Scrooge's. June Foray was a big part of that.)
3- Vicious (Honestly, I always found Vicious to be an average, if effective, rival. I'm more familiar with him than the following two, though.)
4- The Weeping Angels
5- Guou

Magneto (Too much iron in your blood.)
Weeping Angels (Don't blink.)
Vincent (In the rain... in the rain...)
Magica (should rewatch DuckTales)
Guou (could watch Guyver)

Magneto (He ripped out Wolverine's skeleton one time. That's pretty much the epitome of villainy)
Magica (I liked her in DuckTales, and what I've read from the old comics.)
Vicious
Weeping Angels
Guou

I'm going to go ahead and say same as Avaitor for this round, for basically the same general reasons as he listed.

Honestly, as much as I love Cowboy Bebop, I was never that big a fan of Vicious. I mean, he was a well-made villain who had some terrific voice acting done for him in the English dub, but he honestly never stood out to me that much aside from being a fairly worthy adversary for Spike. He's fairly memorable in his own ways, but he's never been one of my personal favorite anime villains.

Ok, guys, I think it's time to wrap this match up.

Now, when tallying the votes, I decided to go with a rather simple system (math not being one of my stronger subjects). Basically, 1st place= 5 points, 2nd place= 4 points and so on. Thus, the results for the first match are:

Guou= 5pts
Weeping Angels= 12pts
Magica de Spell= 17pts
Magneto= 25pts
Vicious= 16 pts

Magneto and Magica move on to Round 2.

Round 1, Match 2:

Iago (Othello)

(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.examiner.com%2Fimages%2Fblog%2Fwysiwyg%2Fimage%2FOthello_and_Iago%281%29.gif&hash=3f3b68d07c5b1d681997829f93190b9ac3f515ea)

Vs.

Alfred Bester (Babylon 5)

(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.spontaneousderivation.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2009%2F04%2Falfred-bester.jpg&hash=b2e40571b05dd2630bde7dac66e040e47c19b205)

Vs.

Vincent (Collateral)

(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.webwombat.com.au%2Fentertainment%2Fmovies%2Fimages%2Fcollateral-1.JPG&hash=d49a3d99589ad90bac644bcf39df36aef08db685)

Vs.

Satan (Paradise Lost)

(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2F9%2F90%2FGustaveDoreParadiseLostSatanProfile.jpg&hash=1750fc3396635491b3a837fa1b566d71aa1aa1eb)

Vs.

Livia (I, Claudius)

(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fpaulfesta.com%2Fuploaded_images%2Flivia-760833.jpg&hash=6521dda4649e32d33ab5bed4b6289885c20310dd)

----------------

1. Iago: One of Shakespeare's greatest villains (possibly the greatest), he is the template for all the false, treacherous "friends" in fiction.
2. Livia: Quite possibly my favorite female villain; Livia is not above poisoning her husband and her second son when she perceives them as threats to her schemes. Plus, she had all the best lines.
3. Milton's Satan: An incredibly persuasive villain who makes you root for him even as you realise what a petty, self-serving bastard he really is. Of course, the fact that he's the most interesting and complex character in the poem could have something to do with it.
4. Alfred Bester: Not only is this guy my favorite "Babylon 5" villain, but he's also my favorite human character on the show. I'm currently on season 4 and so far , I've enjoyed every episode he's appeared in.
5. Vincent: Haven't seen "Collateral"

I'm not very familiar with any of these pieces of work, but I'll try to vote anyway.

1- Satan
2- Iago
3- Alfred Bester
4- Vincent
5- Livia

Out of all of the characters on this list, I am only familiar with 2 of them, so my voting will kind of have to reflect that:

Vincent
Iago
Alfred Bester
Satan
Livia
Title: Re: Greatest Villain Tournament
Post by: Pharass on January 30, 2011, 02:51:44 PM

Iago= 13pts
Alfred Bester= 8pts
Vincent= 8pts
Satan= 10pts
Livia= 6pts

Iago and Satan move on to Round 2.

The next match will be up shortly.

Round 1, Match 3:

The Wicked Witch of the West

(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.wikia.com%2Fvillains%2Fimages%2F8%2F8f%2FWicked_witch.jpg&hash=ea9a3f203bfc822e90d01390354f541fe5f26593)

Vs.

Eneru (One Piece)

(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimage.forumfree.it%2F2%2F6%2F0%2F8%2F0%2F4%2F1%2F1217785958.jpg&hash=1e8016cd23490648a33d2fdc10b078712f090f43)

Vs.

Horius Parry, Vicar of Rerek (The Zimiamvian Trilogy)

Damn it! I can't find a picture. I'm considering posting a quote from the book instead, how's that sound?

Vs.

Gordon Gekko (Wall Street)

(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F4.bp.blogspot.com%2F_R-tzRgJ-LRI%2FSPcvN-enWKI%2FAAAAAAAABc0%2FZRwua4pydVE%2Fs400%2FGordon%2Bgekko.jpg&hash=cb543fd438451f1ecda032e8e953e04fa18a9907)

Vs.

Biff Tannen and all his iterations (Back to the Future Trilogy)

(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ft3.gstatic.com%2Fimages%3Fq%3Dtbn%3AANd9GcRDXaapUXxt9BWlBO3qMJYkOwjTKdRfJN0wKxHrfRsmNHZH0aFu%26amp%3Bt%3D1&hash=62c84721c7ee67e0b2dc4a874d19c3bc37147e7d)

--------------

1. The Vicar of Rerek: This guy is so damn obscure that his chances of moving on are slim indeed. A shame, because he's one of the most deliciously evil villain I've ever read about and completely steals the show from the rather stuffy hero.
2. Eneru
3. The Wicked Witch of the West: I think I prefer Roquat as far as "Oz" villains go, but she's definitely memorable enough for me to give her 3rd place.
4. Biff Tannen
5. Gordon Gekko: Greed may be good,  but unfortunately for Gordon I haven't seen "Wall Street".
Title: Re: Greatest Villain Tournament
Post by: Dr. Insomniac on February 01, 2011, 06:30:14 AM
The Witch
Eneru
Horius Parry (well, he's gotta be evil if we can't find any pictures of him)
Gordon Gecko
Biff (never really liked him, never really hated him. He exuded a quality of indifference for me.)
Title: Re: Greatest Villain Tournament
Post by: Dr. Ensatsu-ken on February 01, 2011, 12:28:56 PM
Awww....No picture for Eneru? Ah well, here's my votes:

1. Gordon Gekko (He's seriously underrated among movie villains, IMO)
2. Eneru (I think he's both a very fun yet sinister villain, who is also one of those evil guys who has an insane God-complex....except in this case he practically has the powers of a God to back up his ego with)
3. Biff (I'll be honest, I only nominated him because we needed to fill in some extra spots; don't get me wrong, I love him as a villain but he's far more of a fun villain that I really find to be memorable in all of his incarnations throughout the different time periods explored in the Back to the Future film trilogy, than he is a villain who can actually be taken all that seriously)
4. The Wicked Witch of the West (I think the book better portrays her villainy than the movie ever did, but either way its been ages since I've either read or watched The Wizard of Oz, so that unfortunately does affect my opinion of her since I don't remember her achievements as a villain too well)
5. Horious Parry (Unfortunately, I am unfamiliar with this villain, but I'm sure he's great and memorable; I'm kind of ashamed to admit that I'm not too well-versed in villains from literature, anymore)

Anyways, this was a great round. I at least know something about all of the villains in this list (except for Horious, unfortunately), and I do have a liking for each of them that I know of (though with very different reasons for each).
Title: Re: Greatest Villain Tournament
Post by: Pharass on February 01, 2011, 01:50:41 PM
Ensatsu-ken: Considering that the guy is from an obscure pre-"Lord of the Rings" work of fantasy, I wouldn't feel too ashamed about not having heard of him before if I were you.

Anyway, for those interested, here's the low down on the character:

Horius Parry is (not unexpectedly) the chief villain of "The Zimiamvian Trilogy" by E.R. Eddison, which is set in the fiction land of Zimiamvia. Prior to the beginning first book, the king of Zimiamvia has been assassined and the two most powerful men in the land: Horius Parry, who is the regent of the land until the king's legitimate son comes of age (and the one who was behind the assassination) and Duke Barganax, the king's illegitamte child are duking it out for control of Zimiamvia. That's the gist of it, at any rate.

What makes Parry into one of my favorite villains of all time is how vivid and larger than life he is (I can't help but picture him like an evil Brian Blessed). While at first he appears to be merely an ill-tempered brute we soon learn that he's also a masterful schemer who makes deals that he has no intention of keeping and is patient enough to swear fealty to a rival more powerful than him until he's in a position to stab him in the back.

The guy just dominates every scene he's in and whenever the focus switched to the hero, I found myself wanting to read more of Parry doing wonderfully evil things, such as killing one of his own dogs, by biting through it's throat.

In short: E.R. Eddison was way better at writing villains than heroes, mostly because his heroes always come of as a bit too perfect.

Vs.

Haman Karn (Zeta Gundam/ZZ Gundam

Vs.

-------

1. Shodan: One of the most memorable game-villains of all time.
2. Claudandus
3. Haman Karn: Not only one of the best "Gundam" villains, but possibly the best female "Gundam" character as well.
4. Scar: A great example of the tragic villain whose thirst for vengeance leads him to punish both innocent and guilty alike, until he eventually finds redemption. Edmond Dantés and Captain Nemo would approve.
5. Max Cady: I really need to see either version of "Cape Fear" some day. Incidentally, which one would you recommend? Personally, I'm more interested in seeing the original, but that's mostly because it has Robert Mitchum in it.
Title: Re: Greatest Villain Tournament
Post by: Avaitor on February 06, 2011, 01:05:07 PM
1- Haman (easily the best part of ZZ)
2- Max Cady (classic performance)
3- Claudandus (also great, but something's got to give.)
4- Scar (fairly interesting character)
5- Shodan (sorry, not familiar)
Title: Re: Greatest Villain Tournament
Post by: Dr. Ensatsu-ken on February 06, 2011, 06:48:28 PM
Pharass: I'd actually recommend seeing both the original and the remake. Both films are extremely well-done in their own respective ways, and the remake pays homage to the original movie with its music and some of its stylistic choices, without being a rehash of it. Its also nice to get a cameo appearance from Gregory Peck, the brilliant actor who happened to play the hero in the original film. As for which one should be seen first, though, I honestly can't say. To be honest, I was introduced to the remake first, but I consider that to be a good thing because I went into it without any preconceived bias towards it as I might have if I had already seen the original. The original Max Cady is portrayed brilliantly by his actor, but Robert De Nero is equally brilliant in his roll as Max Cady as well, but in a different way, just like how Heath Ledger is brilliant as the Joker in a different way than past actors had portrayed him while still portraying him excellently, especially Mark Hamill doing the voice of The Joker in B:TAS.

Anyways, as for my votes for this round:

1. Max Cady
2. Claudandus
3. Scar
4. Haman (Unfortunately I haven't seen this particular Gundam series yet, or if I did I don't remember it very well)
5. Shodan (I'm sure that she's a menacing villain, but unfortunately I've never played System Shock before)

So, here's the deal: Simply post whichever one of these two you wish to proceed to the next round. Remember I only need one more vote, so the first post after this one will decide the winner.

--------

1. Colonel Bozzo: Not only is the guy one of the first criminal masterminds in literature (preceeding Moriarty by about 30 years), but he's also the head of what may very well be the first fictional evil brotherhood/cabal/organisation, long before SPECTRE had ever been heard of. Add to that the fact that he has managed to keep his position by being surrounded by scheming backstabbers, for over a century, murdered his own son and is believed to be Satan (or at least an avatar of him) and we have one awesome villain.
2. Legato Bluesummers: Another great and very creepy villain, who knows how to use his psychic powers in creative ways.
3. MacBeth
4. Dr. Robotnik: I've always liked him more than Sonic, for some reason.
5. Freeza: "Dragonball" in general is something I cared much more about when I was younger than I do now, still even today I have to admit that Freeza was a pretty good villain.

1. MacBeth (Pretty underrated among animated villains, IMO)
2. Legato Bluesummers (He's not nearly one of the best anime villains, IMO, but he's still a memorable one)
3. Colonel Bozzo (I'm still ashamed at the lack of literature that I have read in the last few years, but even though I haven't read anything about him I do at least know quite a bit about him from my older brother, and he's definitely the type of villain that I love to see in fiction)
4. Freeza (I like him much better in the Dragon Ball manga, and I greatly prefer the manga to any adaptation of the anime in general, but overall he's a decent villain)
5. Dr. Robotnik (I like him and all, but its not like he has all that much character to him, so I can't really vote him above the others)

Round 1, Match 6:

Askeladd (Vinland Saga)

------------

1. Askeladd: My favorite character in one of the best manga I've read. Machiavellian, ruthless and deadly, like any truly great villain he manages to steal the show from the protagonist (I hesitate to call Thorfinn a hero).
2. The Dane: While it's never outright stated, I always assumed that Eddie was the true power behind Johnny Caspar. He was certainly much more capable than his boss.
3. Yukishiro Enishi: I haven't read the "Jinchu" arc yet, but from what I've heard of him, he seems like an interesting villain.
4. Hans Landa: Same as with Enishi, so whoever is first of these two is rather unimportant when you think about it.
5. Vergil: Haven't played any of the "Devil May Cry" games. Wait a minute, isn't the hero of those games named Dante? I see what you did there Capcom.

1. Yukishiro Enishi- Some day I need to go into why I think that he's almost as good of a villain as Sensui in terms of manga villains, but for now I'll just say that he's a really well-constructed character
2. Hans Landa- One of the few characters in general in any Tarantino film that I feel is totally deserving of his praise, and in this case its mostly thanks to the fact that Christoph Waltz is such a damn good actor
3. Askeladd- I really need to start reading Vinland Saga one of these days
4. Vergil- Meh, he never really impressed me
5. The Dane- Unfortunately, I don't know anything about him :(

I definitely got to read the Rurouni Kenshin manga after I finish the anime (man am I loving the anime more than ever)

1. Vergil (Hey, he's the only one I know. Hell, did I even nominate this guy?)
2. Enishi (based on potential)
3. Hans (Tarantino is a great director and writer)
4. Askladd
5. The Dane

2. Akuma
3. The Four

I've also never owned a SNES and NES is the only Nintendo system I ever owned (unless you count those few months my brother borrowed a N64 from his friend). Anyway, there's no excuse for not having any Akuma exposure. Speaking of Akuma, ugh, how'd he lose?

Beat em'ups (or whatever they call the genre these days) aren't really my thing (mostly because I tend to suck at them), is there any other way to get some Akuma exposure?

Anyway, on to the next match.

Round 1, Match 8:

One Eye/Mad Dog (Hardboiled)

Vs.

HAL 9000

(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F3.bp.blogspot.com%2F_fEfJDarUjXM%2FS0Lsa2R3WRI%2FAAAAAAAAAIs%2FRvYlwr1G64A%2Fs320%2Fhal-9000-eye.jpg&hash=8b221f8183e5ce3885ad5e570e33a581e45cf86e)

Vs.

Vs.

Toguro (Yu Yu Hakusho)

-----------

1. Hans Gruber: It's been ages since I last watched "Die Hard", but I remember Alan Rickman being awesome as it's main villain: "I'm going to count to three, there will not be a four".
2. HAL 9000: I prefer Shodan, but HAL is the archetypical rogue AI, no doubt about it.
3. Toguro: You know, while the younger was a more fleshed-out character, I think both Toguro brothers were great villains, each in his own way.
4. Don Karnage: I remember this guy,  he was pretty entertaining.
5. Mad Dog: Looks cool, but since he's the only one here I'm not familiar with, he gets last place.
Title: Re: Greatest Villain Tournament

What a great match.

1- Karnage (Normally Gruber would be above him, but I wanted to give him a little push this time)
2- Gruber (What was that you said, "Yippee ki yay mother fucker?")
3- Toguro (Is this for both of them? Even by themselves, I'd put them fairly high)
4- HAL (GREAT villain, although I don't care much for 2001 itself)
5- Mad Dog (Also cool, but something's gotta give)
Title: Re: Greatest Villain Tournament
Post by: Dr. Ensatsu-ken on February 17, 2011, 04:55:46 PM
1. Hal 9000 (I'll be honest and say that I rank it so high because of what this particular villain represents rather than its overall execution, but Hal is indeed a classic villain)
2. Toguro (Just for clarification, I meant Younger Toguro, but I feel that both Toguro brothers are great villains in their own respects, with the Elder Toguro being memorable for how he tries to psychologically toy with his victim's emtions and sadistically makes them suffer....until he faces off against Kurama who is the only person that his tricks don't work on, ending up giving him a taste of his own medicine, in fact; as for Younger Toguro, I could go on forever about his great qualities, so I won't do that right now in order to save everyone a lot of reading ;) )
3. Mad Dog (Classic John Woo villain)
4. Hans Gruber (Classic Die Hard villain)
5. Don Karnage (Unfortunately I've never seen TS before, so I had to rank him last, sorry :( )

HAL 9000= 16 pts
Hans Gruber= 17 pts
Toguro= 18 pts

Hans Gruber and Toguro move on to Round 2.

On a sidenote; what happened to Toguro's picture? It just disappeared..

Anyway, let's move on, shall we?

Round 1, Match 9:

----------------

1. Demona: A wonderfully complex and tragic villain. To paraphrase Gregx: "She's humanity's worst enemy, but more importantly, she's her own worst enemy. She is Demona."
2. Sir Crocodile: While I'm not a big fan of One Piece (I always get the feeling that it's something I should like more than I actually do) I have to give Oda credit for creating some really great villains and Crocodile is by far my favorite out of the ones I know.
3. Eurymachus: Been years since I read The Odyssey, he was one of the asshole suitors, right?
4. Shin: Some day, I'm going to watch Fist of the Northstar
5. Cyrus: Haven't played a Pokemon game since "Gold/"Silver", so I'm not familiar with this character.

Title: Re: Greatest Villain Tournament

1. Sir Crocodile (I'm not as big a fan of One Piece as most other people who follow the series, myself, though I do now have a greater appreciation for the series than I once did; that said, whether I like the series or not is irrelevant in this case because even when I wasn't all too fond of the series I still found Crocodile to be a superbly crafted villain, and still to this day I find him to be the most memorable villain that Oda has ever created in One Piece)
2. Demona (I can't give enough praise to her, and quite frankly GregX already described her character perfectly in 1 sentence)
3. Eurymachus (Yes, Pharass, he is indeed one of the asshole suitors, but to his credit Homer made him a bit more intelligent and manipulative than the rest of the bunch)
4. Shin (I still haven't seen enough of FOTNS yet, and I've only seen him in a few scenes so far, so unfortunately I can't really judge how good of a villain he is, yet)
5. Cyrus (I am unfamiliar with this particular Pokemon character, so I have to rank him last by default)
Title: Re: Greatest Villain Tournament
Post by: gunswordfist on February 18, 2011, 01:18:26 PM
How can you two bitches not know that much about Shin????

1. Shin- Probably my favorite villain voiced by Steven Jay Blum. Definitely like him more than Shisio. Also, probably my favorite underappreicate Blum character. Either him or Guyver III from The Guyver.

2. Cyrus- Haven't played a Pokemon since Crystal...or was it Platinum? W/e is the upgraded version of Silver/Gold.

3. Erymachus

4. Croc

5. Demona (Like her but this is strategy baby!)
Title: Re: Greatest Villain Tournament

1. Crocodile- Pretending to be the hero of Alabasta, just so he can find the blueprints for the ultimate weapon that even the World Government doesn't want back.
2. Cyrus- He wanted to destroy the world, and rebuild it in his image. His image included making humans fucking emotionless. Well, at least he's happy in the Distortion World where no will bother him again.
3. Shin
4. Demona
5. Eurymachus

I thought that they did want it back, though, or at least wasn't CP9's mission to recover the blueprints intact? They seemed to be pretty pissed when Franky burnt them, at any rate.

--------------

1. Michael Corleone: While he's not my favorite character in the movies, he did make for an excellent villain whose fall-from-grace between the first and second movie was fascinating to watch.
2. Two-Face: My favorite version of the character, by far.
3. The Governor: I've never read The Walking Dead (nor have I seen the TV-show), but from what I've heard of him, he sounds like a really evil bastard. By the way, I love the eyepatch.
4. John: Haven't seen the Drunken Master movies.
5. Geechisu: Maybe it's just me, but if I didn't know he was from a Pokemon game and did a GIS for the guy, I'd never have guessed that he's from a Pokemon game. He looks more like a Final Fantasy villain, at least to me.

1. Crocodile- Pretending to be the hero of Alabasta, just so he can find the blueprints for the ultimate weapon that even the World Government doesn't want back.

I thought that they did want it back, though, or at least wasn't CP9's mission to recover the blueprints intact? They seemed to be pretty pissed when Franky burnt them, at any rate.

From what I can recall, I think the Government just didn't want it in the hands of a pirate, which Crocodile technically was. I think I might have gotten them confused.

Which is also something I forgot to mention that while pretending to be the hero and a member of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, he was also the kingpin of Baroque Works.

How in the fuck can you prefer TDK's version? All Two-Face did in that movie was go for revenge. The deepest thing about him in that movie is.....he's evidence that good people can go bad. I'd dig up that review you had on Two-Face's final BTAS alone to show how much better he is in that show. I even prefer that Two-Face to any comic book version I've seen.

Oh and yeah, that's John. That's round is too fucking stacked to try strategy so this is my real order.

1. Two-Face (DC's greatest villain of all time)
2. John (Thank you for protecting my favorite actor's life, Ken Lo)
3. The Governor (ALL HAIL THE KING OF THE GREATEST THE WALKING DEAD ARC!!!!! The best writing zombies have ever been involved in since Dawn Of The Dead.)
4. Corleone (Not a favorite but can't ignore his greatness)
5. Geeunit or whatever his name is.

--------

1. MacBeth
2. Norman Osborn
3. Norman Bates: While he's not one of my favorite Hitchock villains, I have to give Anthony Perkins some credit for an excellent performance. "She wouldn't even hurt a fly..."
4. Alonzo Harris: King Kong ain't got shit on him!
5. Jacobi-Master: One of my favorite actors, too bad he only got to be The Master for one episode.

This one was tough, especially in regards to Norman and Alonzo. To be honest, I'm not sure which one of these two I like more, but "Psycho" lingered in my mind longer than "Training Day", so Mrs Bates' boy had a slight edge there.

1. Alonzo Harris (Normally I wouldn't rank him this high, but he honestly deserves more respect than what he's getting in this round)
2. MacBeth (He'd usually be my number 1 pick, but GSF would probably kill me if I let Alonzo drop out of the competition so easily without at least putting up a little bit of an attempt to save him, even though its pretty much futile by this point)
3. Norman Bates (I would have ranked him one higher but he's already sure to make it to the next round anyways, regardless of where I place him)
4. Norman Osborn (I do get a great guilty pleasure of fun out of Willem Dafoe overacting for this villain in his portrayal of him, and I enjoyed his much better and more serious performance in TSSM, but honestly he was never one of my favorite comic book villains, but maybe if I read some actual comic books it would change my mind on him)
5. Jacobi-Master (Unfortunately I don't know anything about him; sorry :( )

Quoted for truth. While I did admittedly vote for Alonzo over Jacobi's Master, it doesn't the change the fact that I prefer Jacobi as an actor over Denzel Washington, it's just that his version of The Master wasn't my favorite version of the character (although, if he had been around for a few more episodes, I think I'd put him higher). Besides, Jacobi will always be Claudius to me.

To clarify, I'm talking about the main character in "I, Claudius", not Hamlet's uncle.

-----------

1. Graham Reid Malett: Malett is a very interesting villain because at first he seems to be much more heroic than the actual hero; being a brave, humble and inspirational knight in shining armor, so to speak. Scratch a surface though and you'll find a ruthless sociopath willing to do everything to obtain wealth and power. A fantastically loathsome bad guy, the human chessgame between him and Lymond is my favorite final battle between a hero and a villain in litterature, possibly in all of fiction.
2. The Green Goblin: My favorite version of the character. Of course, I liked "The Spectacular Spider-Man" far more than any "Spider-Man" comic, movie or animated show I've seen or read, so I'm obviously a bit biased. That said, I don't think anyone can deny that Gobby was a great villain.
3. Claudius: I can think of a few Shakespeare villains I'd rank higher. However, I give him points for the fact that he (iirc) actually tried to be a good king, unlike certain disney-villains who only cared for themselves.
4. The Master
5. Protman: I don't remember him being that villainous, of course it's been a long time since I played a "Mega Man" game.

Proto Man is shit. Idiots like you should be castrated. You're taste in just about everything is horrible. I'd totally beat the shit out of you if I saw you in public. :sly:

The results:

The Master= 19 pts
Graham Reid Malett= 16 pts
Claudius= 18 pts
The Green Goblin= 22 pts
Protoman= 14 pts

The Master and The Green Goblin move on to Round 2.

By the way, allow me to say that everyone who voted for Protoman over Malett needs to read "The Lymond Chronicles". Come to think of it, anyone who hasn't should read "The Lymond Chronicles", they're great books (albeit, a bit hard at first) and they feature some of the greatest characters in fiction, including one of the most despicably evil, yet fascinating villains of all time.

Round 1, Match 15:

Saito (Rurouni Kenshin)

(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.saitouhajime.com%2Frurouni-kenshin%2Fimages%2Fsaitou-sword.jpg&hash=3154b6f5d24bdf45e0a4a4db0ba726c7aa574f70)

Vs.

Tony Montana (Scarface)

Vs.

Vs.

Keyser Söze (The Usual Suspects)

Vs.

Eric Cartman (South Park)

(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.southparkizle.net%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2010%2F08%2F243j1ao.jpg&hash=460be63d189820d894db313c60050d2ee862524d)

---------------

1. Keyser Söze: A ruthless, elusive criminal mastermind, a modern day Prof. Moriarty more or less. It's been a long time since I saw "The Usual Suspects", but I still remember this guy and everything he did (or was rumored to have done) in the movie.
2. Saito: I wasn't sure whether to put him or Soze first. Saito is a great antagonist and his introduction in the anime was amazing and a sign of things to come. No more plots that are resolved in thirty minutes or silly, generic bad guys. Things were about to get real, so to speak.
3. The Master: Here comes the drums!
4. Eric Cartman: Four words:"Scott Tenorman Must Die". That's all.
5. Tony Montana: You can add "Scarface" to the list of famous movies Pharass haven't seen yet.

Before anyone says it. Yes, I'm aware that the season of "Kenshin" had a few multi-part episodes and a few villains who were memorable and/or legitimately threatening, but they were the exception rather than the rule.

Damn, this is a really tough round:

1. Tony Montana (To me, this is Al Pacino's downright best performance, and far better and more interesting than his role as Michael Corleone in The Godfather movies)
2. Keyser Söze (One of the best villains ever thought up that you never actually get to see....if you know what I mean ;) )
3. Saito (He's a great character though I have to admit that I can't rank him too high only because I think of him more as an anti-hero than as a villain, since he does fight for his own sense of justice more than anything else)
4. Eric Cartman (I'd rank him higher on the list if the competition wasn't so damn tight in this round, but aside from Scott Tenorman must die he does deserve a ton of credit for the numerous other misdeeds that he has performed; the fun thing about his character is that his intellect is actually higher than what one would expect but he focuses it on utilizing it towards the most fucked up evil deeds imaginable....at least for an 8-9 year old boy)
5. The Master (Sorry, but once again I'm not familiar with any characters holding this particular title)

Actually far from being anti-hero. He's not reluctant about being a hero which is basically killing evil and he's all about killing evil on sight hence his motto.

1. Saito (the first few episodes of the Kyoto arc is the best part of the series. I could literally just watch the part where Kaoru willing lets Saito walk into the dojo over and over again)
2. Tony Montana (Pacino at his best)
3. Cartman (Id insult SP right here but I want EK to focus on my Saito comments)
4.  The Master
5 Soze

-----------

1. Johan Liebert: Don't be fooled by his wholesome looks and friendly demeanor, this guy is one of the sickest, most twisted individuals in any manga or anime. In fact, I can only think of one villain in this tournament that's scarier than Johan and even than, it's a close call.
2. Rev. Harry Powell: The Night of the Hunter is a movie that despite a pretty basic plot, has a surreal, almost dreamlike quality to it. However, Mitchum's murderous minister soon turns the dream into a nightmare.
3. Ganondorf
4. Atinous: Asshole suitor, part deux.
5. Hush: Quiet, you!

1. Hush (Heart Of Hush) I don't just have him here for strategy. I'm glad to see that a good modern rival for Batman was successfully made.

2. Atinous
3. Rev.
4. Ganondorf (Need to play Oracle Of Ages and *gasps* Ocarina Of Time. Ether way, he's only this low because of strategy.)

----------

1. Tony Windice: Quite possibly my favorite Hitchcock-villain. Not only did he have a very cunning plan for murdering his wife, but when he was found out, he proved himself to be a graceful loser as well. Sure, Tony may be pretty small-time compared to the other villains in this match, but he makes up for it by being, by far, the coolest of them.

2. Purple Tentacle: One of the funniest and most memorable villains in any game. Plus, in the game's alternative future, he had managed to conquer the entire World. Well, except for Antharctica. Hey! Everyone who has seen "Wallace & Gromit" knows that penguins are ruthless bastards.

3. Claude Frollo: In the original novel Frollo was (iirc, been a long time since I read it) good man who did some terrible things because of love (or maybe lust). In the Disney-version though, Frollo was an evil bastard who firmly believed in his own goodness. Possibly the darkest villain in any Disney-movie, not to mention he had an awesome song.

4. The Cybermen
5. The Huntsman: Never seen "American Dragon"

Pretty good round.

1- The Huntsman (I would reference Name now, but I feel better than to do that. In all seriousness, I think he's an entertaining and menacing villain that could use the support.)
2- Frollo
3- Wendice
4- The Cyberman
5- Purple Tentacle

2. Frollo
3. The Huntsman
4. The Cybermen (I still have never seen any of Dr. Who, but they look cool)
5. Purple Tentacle (Sorry, but this is yet another villain who I am unfamiliar with)

Frollo= 16 pts
The Huntsman= 11 pts
Purple Tentacle= 7 pts
Tony Wendice= 15 pts
The Cybermen= 10 pts

Man, you guys need to play "Day of the Tentacle". Seriously, it's one of the classic adventure games and a testament to how awesome LucasArts was back in the 90's.

Anyway, Frollo and Tony Wendice move on to Round 2.

Round 1, Match 18

Lady Kaede (Ran)

-------------

1. Dr. Mabuse: Whether he's the master-criminal of the first movie or the mental-patient/evil spirit of the second, Dr. Mabuse is one of my favorite villains. Brilliant, twisted and diabolical. Plus, Rudolf Klein-Rogge portrayed him with such intensity in the first two movies that you couldn't help but be fascinated by the guy whenever he was on screen.
2. Dr. Fu Manchu: Another awesome master-villain with undeniable style. Often imitated, never really equalled, The Devil Doctor's greatest achievement must be the fact that he has a mustasche named after him, whereas in the original books, he's never described as having any facial hair at all.
3. Lady Kaede: There have been other vengeance-obsessed villains in this tournament. However, most of them realised in the end, that revenge can only lead to more suffering and tried to repent for the innocent lives they'd. Lady Kaede on the other hand, lives only for the complete destruction of the Hidetora clan and remains unrepentant until the very end.
4. Michael Meyers: Never seen a "Halloween" movie. Still, he's a horror-icon, I guess that's worth some points.
5. Kazuo Kiriyama: Haven't seen "Battle Royale", but I confess that I find the premise intriguing.

-------------

1. Sgt. Hakeswill: One of my favorite villains and the late Pete Postlethwaite did a great job portraying him in the show, from the weird facial ticks to delibaretly mispronouncing the main character's last name, to his obsession with his mother. Take all those ingredients and add some murder and rape to the mix and we have a villain that one loves to hate.
2. Lady MacBeth: Sure, she went insane later on, but for the greater part of the play, she was the one who egged her husband on. Behind every strong man, there's a woman and all that.
3. Maleficent: Not much to say about her, a very imposing and menacing disney-villain to say the least.
4. The Terminator
5. Colorado: Omar Sharif? Is that you?

---------------

1. Lord Gro: By far the most interesting character in the entire book. Lord Gro is the classic scheming, conniving traitor-villain, but with a twist: Unlike other villains of the same type, Lord Gro's sympathies lies firmly with the underdog. Of course, whichever side he's on, isn't going to be the underdog for very long.
2. Count Fosco: Don't be fooled by his joviality and kindness to animals, this man is about as ruthless as they come. Fosco is a master of all trades that a criminal mastermind should know; from hypnotism to chemistry and has ties to secret criminal society. The fact that he's genuinely likable only serve to make him much more frightening.
3. Ben Wade
4. Bowser: He gets some points for being an iconic video-game villain. Plus, I always liked him more than Mario.
5. Ah Jong: Looks cool, but I've yet to see The Killer.

1. Ben Wade
2. Ah Jong (I would say that this is, by far, Chow Yun Fat's 2nd best performance ever, his best being Mark in A Better Tomorrow)
3. Lord Gro
4. Count Fosco
5. Bowser (Now, if this were more specifically the giant baby Bowser who is the final boss in Yoshi's Island, then he'd rank at the top of this list for sure ;) )

-----------

1. Rasputin: Sure, he's a friend of the hero (of sorts), but he's also a sociopathic murderer and thief who shows no remorse for his actions and makes it clear that he only cares about satisfying his own desires. A great villain who one can't help but like.
2. Olrik: It's a shame that the more recent comics have turned him into a shadow of his former selfs, because in the original comics, Olrik was an excellent villain that practically oozed mystery and style. Plus, he helped an evil empire conquer the earth and destroy most of it's major cities in his very first appearance, that has to count for something, right?
3. Nurse Ratched: Bitch.
4. The Smiler: I've only read very little "Transmetropolitan", but from what I've seen of this character, he certainly came of as a twisted bastard.
5. The Master: This one's from the movie, right? I haven't seen it, so I'm not familiar with Robert's interpretation of the character.

-------------

1. Stringer: My favorite villain in The Wire (I considered nominating Omar, but wasn't quite sure if he qualified as a villain or not). Stringer was sophisticated, cultured and tried to lead the business he was involved with onto safer paths. He was also ruthless and had no qualms about killing anyone who proved to be a risk factor. Not quite as ruthless as Marlo, but not someone to underestimate either.
2. Fassad
3. Demon King Piccolo
4. Gauron: I've only seen very little of Fullmetal Panic, but from what I saw, this guy definitely creeped me out.

-----------------

1. Friend: A true evil mastermind if ever there was one. He takes innocent childhood games and fantasies and turn them into reality, horrifying reality. One of the most twisted villains I've seen in a manga.
2. Makoto Shishio
3. Sakyo: I can't help but think of him as the Lex Luthor (or maybe David Xanatos?) of YYH. Considering that he's the only major villain who relies on his vast fortune and massive intellect instead of special powers (well, ok, he's got Toguro on his side too), the comparison seem quite apt. At least to me.
4. Rob Lucci
5. Angelus: I've heard of him and he certainly looks intimidating, but I still haven't seen an episode of Buffy.

Note: I haven't seen The Exorcist, but I do know that Reagan is under demonic possession. So, I'm going to include the demon along with her in this match. If anyone sees any reason for why this should not be, let him speak now or forever hold his peace, at least on this matter.

--------------

1. Shinobu Sensui: A great villain, both as a fallen hero in the vein of Milton's Satan and as an evil counterpart to Yusuke. I haven't finished season 3 yet, but this guy is definitely my favorite in this match.
2. Knives: Seriously, who names a kid Millions Knives? That's just begging for him to grow up and become a genocidal supervillain.
3. Slade Wilson
4. Majora's Mask
5. Reagan: I'm almost ashamed for ranking her so low, since she's from one of the most famous horror-movies ever made. However, since I haven't seen the movie (nor read the book, for that matter), I'm afraid that Reagan is stuck at the bottom. At least for now.

Title: Re: Greatest Villain Tournament

1. Shinobu Sensui (Wow, I was ready to write-up a ton of reasons for why Sensui is such a great villain, but Pharass already put it so well in many less words than I ever could :D ; with the exception of Johan and probably some villains from prestigious classics that I still have yet to see **cough**legendofthegalacticheroes**cough**, Sensui is hands down the best villain in anime out of the ones that I have seen, shonen or otherwise)
2. Knives (Who names a kid Knives? Some pretty awesome parent, that's who. :sly: )
3. Reagan (Sure, she can be an iconic villain, but I feel that her popularity has more to do with the mass shock value that she caused at the time rather than truly clever writing and a truly creepy performance, to be honest)
4. Majora's Mask (I felt more sorry for Skull Kid than threatened by him, and the mask itself has absolutely no personality, so I can't really rank it that high as an interesting villain)
5. Slade (I haven't read any of the Teen Titans comics, and as for the animated series I'm not really a fan, to be honest)

1. Judge Holden: I'm hard pressed to come up with a better example of ultimate evil in fiction. Everyone in Blood Meridian is pretty bad, but The Judge towers over them all like some sort of God from ancient mythology treating mortals like mere playthings. He never sleeps, The Judge. He's dancing, dancing, he says he'll never die.
2. Frank: "People scare easier, when they're dying."
3. Captain Vidal: One of the best villains of the past decade. The Pale Man was pretty unsettling as well, but Vidal was the most evil monster in that movie.

You guys really need to read Blood Meridian (unless you haven't already), so that you can witness the evil of Judge Holden firsthand. This is the man who, upon arriving in a town, informs the townspeople that their newly appointed preacher is, in fact a fraud and a condemned child-molester. This leads to the preacher getting lynched by an angry mob. Later, The Kid (the main character) meets up with Judge Holden again and the latter admits that he just made all of those accusations up.

Now, that's Evil with a capital "E".

Of course, The Judge's entire character can best be summed up by what seems to be his motto: "Everything that exists without my knowledge, exists without my consent."

--------------------

1. The Joker
2. Char Aznable
3. Marlo Stanfield: The most ruthless villain in the entire show, the scene with the security guard at the store in season 4 is a perfect example of how evil Marlo is. Not to mention all the vacant houses, filled with bodies.
4. Cell
5. Willow: I've just started to watch Buffy, but since I'm only at the beginning of season 1 and she obviously turns evil much later in the show, I can't really put her any higher.

Wow! A match where I actually know all of the characters. This is going to be tough. Anyway, here goes:

1. David Xanatos: This man is truly an inspiration to us all.
2. Harry Lime: So charming and so evil. Also delivered one of the greatest monologues in cinematic history.
3. Count Dracula: Although, I know he was only called that for legal reasons, I still can't help but think of this version as "Graf Orlock". Great villain though, no matter what his name.
4. Angel-Eyes
5. Talky Tina

Xanatos and Count Dracula move on to Round 2.

And now, are you ready for the final match of Round 1? Here it is:

Round 1, Final Match

The Master (Roger Delgado)

(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fblogs.telegraph.co.uk%2Fnews%2Ffiles%2F2009%2F10%2FMaster-360x288.jpg&hash=16c494016c9e43932c7c18b5c0b3d3f5df115109)

Considering that I love all of these villains, this match is propably the toughest for me, so far. Ah, well, here goes nothing:

1. Al Swearengen
2. The Master: The first and best version of the character.
3. Littlefinger: In a series filled with manipulative bastards, Littlefinger stands out as the most magnificent of them all.
4. Philip Vandamm
5. Thailog

Wow, you guys all suck. Ranking Tony Montana dead last, you must either really hate Scarface or are just too pussied out to respect a top-tier villain like Montana. He'd step on all those other "Cockroaches." :anger:

Anyways, my (much better and more accurate, list):

1. Tony Montana
2. Malificent
3. Magica
4. Scar (seriously overrated, IMO, as I don't even really consider him a villain to begin with)
Title: Re: Greatest Villain Tournament
Post by: Pharass on April 09, 2011, 01:35:08 PM
I can only speak for myself, but my reason for ranking Montana last is because I haven't seen "Scarface" yet.

As for Scar, while he eventually redeems himself, he does start out as a vengeance-obsessed mad-man who goes around killing state-alchemist regardless of whether they were involved in the Ishval massacre or not. I'd say he qualifies as a villain, at least early on.

Keep in mind that I regularly say stuff like that when I think it will piss GSF off, just because I get a kick out of that. I don't really think Scar is a bad character or anything, but ranking him last lets me take some of my daily real-life frustrations out on that punk, GSF. :D

Enough of this nonsense. Here are the results:

Tony Montana= 10 pts
Scar= 12 pts
Maleficent= 16 pts
Magica de Spell= 12 pts

Once again, two of the contestants are tied. As usual, you may give one extra vote to the character you wish to proceed. Remember, I only need one more vote, so first come, first served.

Title: Re: Greatest Villain Tournament
Post by: Pharass on April 10, 2011, 09:07:57 AM
Yeah, you could do that. Unfortunately, it won't matter since the round is technically over and all I need is an extra vote for either Scar or Magica in order to move on.

I vote for Magica, on the grounds that I want to piss GSF off for being a dumb-ass and voting Montana last. Now his dumb-ass favorite villain can be dropped along with him. Too bad GSF tried to get so cocky with me, the little prick. :>

I think I'll give Nemo the edge this time. Classic literature needs more representation on here.

A tough choice. The Joker does have a long and varied history of villainy behind him, but in the end, I'll have to go with Johan; truly one of the most frightening monsters I've ever encountered in both comics and animation.

I'm going to have to go with Johan on this one. I think the Joker wins as a more iconic villain with many memorable iterations of him, but since he is such as obvious choice on any list of top villains or such, I think its only fair to give the must less credited yet just as deserving Johan the title of best villain this time.

Well, there don't seem to be any more votes coming in, so we might as well wrap this tournament up. Are you ready? Here are the results:

2nd Place

The Joker

(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.comics101.com%2Fcomics101%2F%2Fnews%2FComics%2520101%2F63%2Fjoker2.jpg&hash=d4e58fd549f1a510aff4de622d170d0a71e7ecfd)

And the champion of this tournament and Animation Revelation's Greatest Villain is:

Johan Liebert

(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages4.fanpop.com%2Fimage%2Fphotos%2F17400000%2FJohan-monster-17426175-600-450.jpg&hash=ab5cc8ac75478b3abd9eada94236d80bf21c54d5)

:worship: :worship: :whip: :whip:

I'd like to thank all of you for participating in this tournament, I hope you enjoyed it, I certainly did. Anyway, for no particular reason, here's a list of characters I didn't nominate either because I forgot about them or didn't know them at the time, or because I wasn't sure they qualified as villains:

Omar Little (The Wire)
Helmut J. Lecoque (Fang of the Sun Dougram)
Adrian Rubinsky (Legend of the Galactic Heroes)
Paul von Oberstein (Legend of the Galactic Heroes)
Lady Eboshi (Princess Mononoke)
Loren Visser (Blood Simple)
Palmer Eldritch (The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch)
The Count of Monte-Cristo (both in the novel and in Gankutsuo)

And a few others, but I digress.

Villain in the tournament that I would have voted higher if I had been familiar with him/her at the time:
Propably Angelus.

Once again, thank you all for participating. I'll see you around.

Either villain would be equally worthy of the #1 spot, but as Avaitor says, Johan really deserves his ranking, and The Joker is already widely recognized as one of the greatest villains of all time as it is, so it was nice to have a slight change of pace for this tournament.
