Here we go! New thread, more music for us all to share.
As of now I am listening to "Evil Thrill" by Marty Friedman. This is from his first solo album, done between Cacophony and his stint in Megadeth. He even gets Becker over on a few of his tracks, like this one.
Golden Earring - "Twilight Zone"
Over the years, more and more I think this is one of the greatest songs. Ever.
NOFX - "S&M Airlines".
The Ting Tings - "That's Not My Name"
I have a problem, you see...
The Monkees- "Papa Gene's Blues"
Don Henley - "New York Minute"
Atoms for Peace - "Judge, Jury and Executioner"
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing
Queensryche - Promised Land
Queensryche - Queensryche (2013)
Heart - Fanatic
Robert Randolph & The Family Band - Diane
Judas Priest- "Night Crawler"
Run DMC - "Run's House".
All I can think of is Matt Damon in Dogma. Who's house...
Amorphis- "Drowned Maid"
Living Colour - "Leave it Alone"
The Black Dahlia Murder- "Death Panorama"
I'm trying to give them more of a chance and... no. I should go back to some Evoken or something instead.
Django Reinhardt. Lots and lots of Django Reinhardt.

It is a really good song. I get pissed off with certain radio stations that'll sometimes play the cheap radio edit of it. The length of the song is no excuse - it must be all or nothing. =)
---
God, I hate Rob Zombie. ;D But I'm finding myself listening to him now. "Let It All Bleed Out"
Queensryche- "Della Brown" (Unplugged)
WOW. How have I never seen this show before? The song selection is great, too. It's hard to believe that Geoff is here, at his prime and cracking jokes with the audience. It's a shame that this couldn't last.
The Firm - "Radioactive".
George Harrison - (I Got My Mind) Set On You
Black Water Rising- "Blessed"
I heard of these guys while having Music Choice on, and saw that they named themselves after a line from a Clutch song. I dug their style already, but this was the bit that sealed the deal in. Very Clutchy, with some Maiden added in as well. A good mixture!
Queen - Sheer Heart Attack
Slayer- "Tormentor"
Back to the 90's... AGAIN!
As usual, I was able to come up with a list of bands/artists I neglected the first time. And the 2nd time. So, I'm brushing up on the following:
Digital Underground
Chris Rock
Porno for Pyros
Jane's Addiction
Jennifer Lopez
Usher
Rahzel
De La Soul
Kula Shaker
Cyndi Lauper
Eminem
Kelis
George Michael
Suzanne Vega
Imogen Heap
Vitamin C
Goo Goo Dolls (pre-"Iris" which I fucking hate more than hate can hate)
Smashing Pumpkins (pre-Siamese Dream, which I know as well as anyone who's owned the album for 16 years)
Radiohead
Counting Crows
and some soundtracks
Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare
The Rugrats Movie
Mallrats
Empire Records
The Doom Generation
Nowhere
Splendor
and whatever else I note later
The Rolling Stones - Sympathy for the Devil
Tegan and Sara - "The Con".
The Allman Brothers Band- "Mountain Jam"
twice I have sat through Mountain Jam. Never again. I like jam sessions, but ABB can't hold my attention for 33 minutes.
It ain't bad, but "Whipping Post" is more epic. I still prefer the Allman's jams to the Dead's, but that's just personal taste.
Outkast - "Bamboo"
The Brains - Cucaracha In Leather (http://sailorsgraverecords.bandcamp.com/track/cucaracha-in-leather)
Reminds me of a spaghetti western. Love it.
Life of Agony- "Weeds"
Screaming Trees - "Tomorrow Changes"
Sergio Mendes- "The Joker"
Bloc Party - "One Month Off"
One more month of this shit...
Queensryche- "Della Brown"
Really good reading music.
Beastie Boys - "The New Style"
The Smiths- "What She Said"
Sometimes I forget that I do like the Smiths.
Rozalla - "Faith"
Damn it, Venture Bros., now I'm listening to all this chick's 90s stuff... and I fucking love it. Reminds me of Sonic R music.
Aerosmith- "No More No More"
Killing Joke - "Pole Shift" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99tqSr0Ml1s)
I'm kinda diggin' this album that song comes from (MMXII).
Seems like appropriate material to keep the neighbors awake. :sly:
The Smashing Pumpkins- "Muzzle"
Iced Earth - "A Question of Heaven"
The Verve- "Space and Time"
Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians - "What I Am".
One hit wonder.
Seether - "Fine Again"
Quote from: Comeau on August 14, 2013, 09:52:46 PM
Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians - "What I Am".
One hit wonder.
Yeah, but it's a good one though. Always had a soft spot for that song.
Radar Eyes- "Side of the Road"
I'm sick of the garage rock revival scene that Jack White and the Strokes started up and Japandroids are keeping alive, but I like this. Go figure.
Beck - "Think I'm in Love"
Desireless - "Voyage, Voyage"
I got into this because of Maison du Malheur's cover of the song, which was played in the latest Heineken commercial with the guy and his goat running through the streets of India, but Maison du Malheur has yet to release a single of their version, so I bought an mp3 of Desireless' original after listening to it in its' entirety.
Fog-gle sent me this grrrrrrrreat al-bum. Lets listen to it to-get-her.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvlslhihfnU&feature=c4-overview&list=UU1m1xEmgcKWRLBPErHutlMQ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvlslhihfnU&feature=c4-overview&list=UU1m1xEmgcKWRLBPErHutlMQ)
How sweet the sound.
The Ramones - No Go
Still the best punk rock song, in my opinion.
Journey - "When You Love a Woman".
Love the build up in the song.
Iron Maiden- "Phantom of the Opera" (Live at Download '13)
This has always been the one Di'Anno-era song that was tailor-made for his voice, and not so much Bruce's. But the music is SO GOOD that I'm just glad to see them pull it out again this tour.
The Ramones - Howling At The Moon (Sha-La-La)
Into
The Ramones - Daytime Dilemma (Dangers Of Love)
Yep, still my favorite Ramones album.
I've now heard a second song by Robin Thicke. And just like Blurred Lines, he makes sure to mention that his dick is huuuuge. Is this supposed to be a running joke, or is he really just that cocky  about himself? Dude comes off like the biggest fucking tool.
"What rhymes with hug me?" is an actual lyric?
The song isn't even finished.
Todd nails into it better thanI ever could. (http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/teamt/tis/tpsr/39936-pop-song-reviews-blurred-lines)
Honestly, I do like the beat, but the lyrics are just sooo sleazy. And the performance. And the video. This is the most popular song of the year, people.
I wonder how the Kidz Bop version will sound.
Probably not as epic as their version of Thrift Shop.
a-Ha- "The Sun Always Shines on TV"
Still one of the best pop albums ever.
Arctic Monkeys - Do I Wanna Know?
Never really went out of my way to seek this band but this song was on the radio and I fucking loved it. Music video's great too.
Been listening to this about every day for the past week. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slqVU5tfr_c)
Goodie Mob - "Soul Food"
Cee-Lo Green... good rapper! Still hate him as a singer. But he's a pretty good rapper.
Tom Waits- "9th & Hennepin"
Necessary double post for Slim's new song. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=359na4NeaVA)
Mehtastic. He just can't do diss songs anymore.
Neurosis - "Aeon" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgBuR6wSCeI)
I listen to this song too much. :e_pleased:
^I like the build up in the beginning of that song.
--------
Killing Joke - Love Like Blood (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9MvdpC2dp4)
Guitar riff/drums are quite comparable to Dr. Feelgood by Motley Crue.
Stolen? Borrowed from KJ? You be the judge.
Yes, Neurosis are great.
The Strangeloves- "Night Time"
I don't know where this Icona Pop came from...
but...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whCFh3WiGNw
I hope they're gonna be around for awhile!
They've really improved since "I Love It (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_q8L8Tksd8)" .
The Blackouts - "Something...I can't Say"
The Nice Boys - "Teenage Nights"
Ladytron - "Playgirl"
Phontaine - "Isla de la Piedra"
-Since Fuel TV died this past weekend, I've been revisiting a lot of the music and bands I first heard on that channel.
Billy Idol - Dancing With Myself (Long Version)
Underrated track.
Divine Fits - My Love Is Real
I dig this album.
Going over my 90's playlist. In the S's now. Re-listening to:
The Sundays, Super Furry Animals, Superchunk, Suzanne Vega, SWV, The Supernaturals, System of a Down, and Suede.
Do you only have SOAD's singles, or are you listening to s/t in there?
Death- "Suicide Machine"

Now it's For Your Heart. Definitely the best of the bunch. Love it.

I have access to whatever Mrtzcmp3 and Mp3Skull have on "wax" (though I had to do a little Foreign Shopping to get my hands on Salt-N-Pepa's "Giddy Up"... that one's quite the slippery sucker). I only bothered with the singles and they only released 2 ("Sugar" and "Spiders") before 2000, which naturally is my cut-off year. ;D
I'm currently in the H-I-J area. James - who I
can't believe I've never heard until this week, Ini Kamoze, Ja Rule, Jade, Jane's Addiction, Hanson, Imogen Heap, Jay-Z, Janet Jackson, Imani Coppola (and one of my favorite albums,
Chupacabra- and I can't find a Google Image for her "It's All About Me, Me, and Me"; which Wiki informs me was a single) and Hole. Who will be making my list quite a few times- they have an impressive pre-
Live Through This catalog. Which I've known since I was a huge fan of theirs as a teen, but I wasn't aware "Dicknail" was a single (though that won't be making the list, not with so much more to choose from).
"Old Age" is playing right now - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYsNB4_yt-M . Should have been a single! Instead, it's "Violet"s B-side. I
should cheat and put it on the list anyway but... I've already literally cooked up / doctored a few cover pics for songs Wiki told me were singles. I
have to have "Navy Bean" on my list: https://myspace.com/tracybonham/music/song/navy-bean-68382-77345 . So, I'm just blaming this on Wiki.
Avenged Sevenfold- "Requiem"
Since I'm seeing the Ghost show where they're opening for A7X, I figured that I should check out their new album. It's definitely taking more cues from Sabbath and Maiden, which is a good thing, but it's still not beyond okay.
Not a fan of A7X myself, but from what I've seen, a lot of the fanbase seems to be thinking that Hail To The King is a step down. I only hear them bitch about it all the time on another forum I'm on. :D

Well they deliberately went for an old-school vibe here, so that's probably what alienated a lot of fans.
Which is funny, because their most popular (and best, IMO) album, City of Evil, is almost straight Maiden-fappage.
Wang Chung - Dance Hall Days
Megadeth- "Hangar 18"
Always a good time for RIP.
Headed down south to the land of the pines
I'm thumbin' my way into North Caroline
Starin' up the road, pray to God I see headlights
I made it down the coast in seventeen hours
Pickin' me a bouquet of dogwood flowers
And I'm a hopin' for Raleigh
I can see my baby tonight...
I'm listening to a wonderful rendition of Shostakovich's 4th symphony.
FINALLY got the final 999 set. That is, the selections. Working on ranking now... that takes awhile. Right now, Pharcyde is playing.
Immortal- "Cursed Realms of the Winterdemons"
Bastille - Bad Blood
Dayum. All these great debut albums coming from new bands this year and all my usual staples are going to make my top ten at the end of the year a really, really difficult one.
Fleshgod Apocalypse- "Elegy"
Death metal and symphonic. Goes together pretty well, actually, although sometimes it sounds like freaking TSO.
Ted Nugent - "Hey Baby"
Corrupted- "El mundo frio"
Basically Dopesmoker with even less lyrics. Not baddd.
The 90's list is on the backburner (again). But now I'm digging around in the old Horror Soundtrack vaults.
Currently, I'm playing "Paura e Liberazione" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AtlzJuuv-E) from City of the Living Dead. Not a movie I heartily recommend by any means, House by the Cemetery is a lot more outrageous, fun, and entertainingly bizarre. Unless you've never seen an Italian splatter flick before. In which case, the intestine vomiting scene is at least a moment you really should see. This track is, uh... really beautiful. Somehow it was displaced onto this soundtrack because one listen instantly throws you into The Beyond, Lucio Fulci's superior in places (but not quite as a whole) followup to City.
Where I go from here... I might wind up in Nightmare on Elm Street 4-5-6 territory soon (I can't wait to hear those tracks!!!), The Beyond is inevitable, as is From Beyond, then maybe The Church if there was ever a proper soundtrack released (and if there's one for Burnt Offerings, I can't imagine there wasn't one for this).
Wire- "A Mutual Friend"
Simon and Garfunkel - "The Boxer".
Listening to this on my brand new iPhone 5S.
Oh man, no one told me The Constellations released a new album last year. I must have listened to Southern Gothic at least once per week since 2011.
Starting off with the excellent Black Cat (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4iRQW2QF4A), this record is already my jam.
You can listen to the entire album for free, officially, here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4trw-PEUqY
Seriously, do it. This is some of the best music I've heard in a long time.
Thanks for the link, Fog. Not really anything I could get into but it's nice to try and expand my horizons now and then.

Aww. :( Glad you at least tried listenin' to it though!
The playing was pretty tight. :)
Just, the songs in general didn't really do much for me.
Of course, I know not everyone would care for this kind of music. ;)
Speaking of music that isn't for everyone
Tinariwen- "Tenhert"
Lyscus- "Engravings"
Holy fuck, I need to own this now. Funeral doom at its best.

haha, yeah. It's basically really depressing doom metal, after the pot has worn off.
Cannibal Corpse- "From Skin to Liquid"
Demi Lovato - "Made In The USA"
Sirius plays it a lot. I'm behind the times I know, been gone for nine months, but I do like the song.
Rihanna - "What's My Name?"
what have I become

I'm actually not a big fan of this one. There are more clever songs on the album, and it doesn't have the weight of "Heart Attack". But she nails it live.

This song I do like though.
Goblin- "Dr. Frankenstein"
The Jam - Strange Town
Better than the Stones (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wr04oP99up8)
Mahavishnu Orchestra - "Birds of Fire" easily one of my all time favorite albums.
The Fixx - "One Thing Leads to Another"
Dream Theater - Dream Theater
While other fans seem to be loving it, I've never been more disappointed in this band. After how great the last album was, I don't understand how they churned out this meandering, cobbled-together mess.
ELO - "Four Little Diamonds"
Too good.
I'm listening to the Remix Two album by Breakmaster Cylinder.
The Who - Leaving Here
Matchbox 20 - "Mad Season"
Aerosmith- "Rats in the Cellar"
Rockwell - "Somebody's Watching Me"
The Sword- "Tres Brujas"
Somehow, I haven't listened to their last 2 albums, despite really digging the first 2. It seems like I made a mistake.

Not one of her best. But well-produced.
Surprisingly, by the way... I came across "Dr. Frankenstein" myself just a couple days ago.
The Sword- "Cheap Sunglasses"
Sick cover! Okay, I'm glad I checked these albums out. I should try to buy them now, like I have the first 2.
90's bug bit me...a'gin!!:
Saint Etienne - "Like a Motorway"
Queen Pen - "Party Ain't a Party"
Pentagram- "Death Row"
Sam and Dave - "Soothe Me".
Listening to some random Firesign Theater:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2I2PjLna4C0
"How come we found you in a classroom today? Why weren't you hanging out in the parking lot, relating to the kids and teachers?"
"I don't smoke."
"Malcolmx Johnlennon, come on in and dig your mother."
"Aw, mom, I can't now. I gotta go do my homewor-- I MEAN I gotta meet my connection!"
"You can't fool me, you're in one of those underground study sails, aren't you?!"
"NO!!"
"It'll kill your father. I didn't breast feed you for 14 years for this."
Foster the People - "Pumped Up Kicks"
John (Corbell) sent me an album called In A Tidal Wave Of Mystery by Capital Cities. I looooove it! I haven't quite listened to the whole thing yet, but tracks 3-5 are a slice of absolute perfection.
Yeah, I like the album. Funny enough, they recorded Safe And Sound in 2011 and while it was in constant rotation on Sirius, it and a bunch of other indie songs by newer bands started showing up on mainstream radio en mass about a year ago. I think by the time they recorded the rest of the album their sound had changed a bit. At least, the rest of the album sounds like it was recorded separate from that single.
I noticed that too! Safe And Sound is really good, but I think I prefer the more disco/funk-influenced sound of the rest of the album. But hey, that's just the kind of music I like to begin with. ;)
In Solitude- "A buried Sun"
This album was a birthday request that came by just in time. It's killer so far.
Madcap - Lovesick
Their only exceptional song, in my opinion.

I think the reason I fell in love with Safe and Sound is because the trumpets remind me of old Sonic music. Like Marble Garden or something.
Pearl Jam - "Got Some"
The Stooges- "We Will Fall"
Lana Del Rey - "Summertime Sadness".
Never really felt any of her music until this song.
Iron Maiden- "The Nomad"
I have a lot to say about this song. About the whole album, really. Actually, I really should do track-by-track reviews of each song by the band on here.
About to start marathoning every album I've picked up this year (meaning anything released this year) so I can do my top ten down the road. First up is Alice In Chains and Alter Bridge.
Opus - "Live is Life"
Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers - The Drum Thunder Suite
Man I love the sounds in this.
Fishbone- "Let the Good Times Roll"
I haven't seen The Mask in years. I barely even remember watching the film to begin with. But I just dig the song.
"Roses" :humhumhum:
(Oh, how badly I want that line to be "Caroline- she's the reason for the Blair Witch.")
My sister's name is Caroline, and when that song came out, she loved it... until she really heard the lyrics. :P
Brian Eno- "Matta"

90's... AGAIN:
Suede - "Beautiful Ones" (and soon after that, "Trash")
David Guetta ft. Nicki Minaj - "Turn Me On"
good lord what have I become
Sonic Youth- "Mote"
Cyndi Lauper - Hole In My Heart
One of my favorites of hers.
Foo Fighters- "Arlandria"
This album really was good, honest.
Wasting Light is is my favorite album by them, yeah.
Van Halen- "Get Up"
God help me, I love the new Panic! At The Disco album.
Diamanda Galas- "There Are No More Tickets to the Funeral"
Lady can sing.
The Velvet Underground- "I'm Set Free"
RIP Lou
The Undertones - I Gotta Getta
Robert Randolph & The Family Band - Good Lovin'
Wow, this might be their best album.
Skeletonwith- "I Am of Death (Hell Has Arrived)"
They're on tour with Amon Amarth and Enslaved, and the tour is supposed to come to the House of Blues here. Sadly, that HOB is at Disney, and Skeletonwitch are the latest casualty in their recent embargo on metal acts. I don't really get what makes them so much more obscene than the other 2 in Disney's eyes, but them's the breaks. I might still do that show though.
The entirety of Iced Earth's Horror Show album.
Gorguts- "Ember's Voice"
Okay, it's good! Sure am glad about that.
The Shaolin Afronauts' first album.
Pop Levi - "Sugar Assault Me Now"
Toto - "Hydra"
Fleetwood Mac- "Never Going Back Again"
It genuinely confuses me that there are people who really hate this album.
Tegan and Sara - "So Jealous"
Love this album.
Listened to Lady Gaga's newest last night and... she's losing her touch. 15 tracks and only 4 are really any good. My official individual track purchase recommendations, in order from most decent to most outstanding: "Venus," "Do What U Want," "Aura," "Artpop."
Agalloch- "Dead Winter Days"
Robert Randolph & The Family Band - Love Rollercoaster
Always a good cover.
Windir- "Arntor, ein windir"
T. Rex- "Lean Woman Blues"
Missy Elliott - "She's a Bitch"
I'm desperately trying to iron out my 999 Top 90's Singles List but it is taking For-Ev-Er. I really thought I had 900-999 down but I have spent hours (Tuesday to Thursday) just re-arranging that (as I collect pictures of the covers) and I'm only up to about 912 right now. My final list might be ready by December.
Might.
Eminem- "Rhyme or Reason"
I LOVE the use of sample on this one. Digging the album thus far.
Haven't had the chance to listen to the new album yet, but I want to.
Green Day - "Misery".
It's really good! I liked it a lot better than his last one, which I thought was decent.
Van Halen- "Dirty Movies"
Naughty By Nature - Down With OPP
That bass-line, man.
I Wanna Get a Mohawk(But Mom Won't Let Me Get One) - AFI
These guys used to be so great.
Crowbar- "Existence is Punishment"
The Black Keys - "Little Black Submarines"
The Killers - "Read My Mind"
SubRosa- "Fat of the Ram"
This has been a pretty good year for metal. It'll be tough to make up my list.
"I Love You So Much It's Killing Us Both" - Jawbreaker.
Fates Warning - Darkness In A Different Light
After my utter disappointment in the self-titled mess Dream Theater put out this year, this was needed. Fates Warning hasn't released anything in nine years and they still got it.
Rainbow- "Gates of Babylon"
I should totally check out new Fates, though.
If you can, check out the 2-disc version. Falling Further is an awesome rocking out version of Falling, a short piano piece on the main album. Kind of wish it had made the main disc.
Pearl Jam - "Nothingman"
This is such a great song.
Def Leppard - "Photograph".
I still don't get how they took such a nosedive in quality after Pyromania.
$$$
Naam- "Pardoned Pleasure"
Man or Astro-Man? - "Television Fission"
They Might Be Giants - "Rat Patrol"
-I was introduced to both of these songs via The Isle of Rangoon; just another reason to jump on this show's bandwagon.
I may have to give a listen to more MoAM? now.
Tom Waits- "Dead and Lovely"
(As of about 11pm:)
Organizing the core 500-800 middle of my Top 999 Singles of the 1990's list.
(As of about 12:45am:)
Decided the 300-500 section needed some restructuring.
(Somewhere around 1:30am:)
Running up the 110-200's. Definitely needed some work.
And, right now, L7 is playing.
The Mountain Goats- "Night Light"
As much as I love them, I skipped this album for whatever reason last year. Now I'm really regretting it.
Pearl Jam - "State of Love and Trust"
This is one way to start your morning.
John Coltrane- "A Love Supreme, Part 3: Pursuance"
Beastie Boys - "Shake Your Rump"
Nothing gets your day going quite like the Beasties.
Rory Gallagher- "Philby"
The Decemberists - Down By The Water
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Heard It Through The Grapevine
Iron Maiden - Sign Of The Cross (Live)
Haken - Cockroach King
Blues Traveler - "Cara Let the Moon"
Deafhaven- "Vertigo"
I'm finally listening to Sunbather. This is an album that's been getting a lot of love from outside of the black metal community, even obtaining praise from hipster-prone sites like Pitchfork and AV Club's Music section. I certainly know of some people who dig it but you'd never catch at a Gorgoroth show. And... it ain't bad. I wouldn't say that this is the best black metal has to offer, but this is a fine entry-level release and nothing sounds off. I'm glad it exists, even if it probably won't make my personal list.
Autograph - "Turn Up the Radio"
The Cars - "Dangerous Type".
Kajagoogoo - "Too Shy"
Robert Randolph & The Family Band - If I Had My Way
Electric Wizard- "Mind Transferral"
Going over that impossibly challenging 999 list again. It is taking so long, so much work is required comparing each track to one another to make them fit to position into a list like this. Now that I keep going through each set of 500, 600, 700- I wonder how I ever mixed them up in the first place. Somehow they all scattered in generally the right place I thought they belonged. Then I go through them deciding one Busta Rhymes is an 800 rather than a 600, one La Bouche needs to be booted altogether and replaced by Sarah McLachlan, Dismemberment Plan is good enough for the 200 rather than somewhere between the two Black Sheep's. So much relistening involved. And 999 songs? When I SELECT+ALL the tracks, the program tells me the total time of the songs together is: "3.0 Days." Days- that is a bit crazy. Just a tad. But... I swear I feel like I'm getting close. 700-999 is pretty much set. I'm just figuring out the 500-699 right now.
Anyway, Ace of Base just morphed into Aphex Twin... a rather dramatic mood shifter. And when I was thinking about what song to replace "Sweet Dreams" with, I was considering Shampoo's "Girl Power." I freaking love that song- I know it's awful, but I love it to death. Bask in its guilty pleasure...ness: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_S5aMe9atw
The Velvet Underground - "Femme Fatale"
Lush.
How did I discover them only this year??
RHCP- "Snow (Hey Oh)"
I find it funny that the album's two hits are what start it of. But tbh, I've always hated this song.
I really like that song and album.
I think this is the first time I've tried listening to it all the way through, and it's better than I was expecting. Certainly funkier than their previous two.
Yeah, a lot of the deeper cuts on Stadium Arcadium are great. 21st Century ftw.
It's not their finest work, and is certainly bloated, but some of the tracks are excellent IMO. I love Storm In A Teacup, Turn It Again, Hump De Bump, and Make You Feel Better. Wish they hadn't dropped Rolling Sly Stone from SA, that one's fantastic.
I just hit "21st Century", and dudeeeee.

Corrosion of Conformity- "Positive Outlook"
Fuel - "Falls On Me"
FINALLY done with the ordering and pic-snatching on my Top 999 Singles of the 1990's list. Actually, I was done Tuesday afternoon. Just need the ambition to start doing the linking and all that. Wanted to share a couple of insights in my Year of Labor on this project:
A good contender for Most Pointless Song of the 1990's is 702's "No Doubt." Also the title of the album it's from. Almost 70% of the song is the chorus repeating. You should hear it, it's incredible...y annoying. You really do start thinking they're finished...but then they do it again. And again. And again. And it's a terrible chorus too. Gotta get down, to what it's all about, see I want you, and that's no doubt. Repeat for 2.5 minutes of a 4:20 song (exactly 4:20, no jokes or I'll roast you- try me).
And... by the way, worst song of the decade, hands down, is thus: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5giWfpANMac I was literally disgusted when I clicked off of it (early in the summer), but forced myself to listen to the entire thing. I don't know how, I reached my peak point of outrage several times.
Nirvana- "Aneurysm" (Live at Reeding)
Oh yes...I almost forgot:
The acoustic version of "Fake Plastic Trees" (on the Clueless soundtrack) is markedly superior to the album version.
And Pitchfork claimed "Nightswimming" was R.E.M.'s best single of the decade? Royal steaming bullshit.
Iron Maiden- "Rime of the Ancient Mariner"
THis is probably my best music to inspire me during writing. Sometimes on a loop. :P
Zooming at the Zoo - "Go to Hell"
The song playing at the dance club when pre-teen Asia Argento actually expressed a desire to go back into the demonic church where everyone was dying. In the 1989 film, The Church. No, she decided dancing with her friends was the pits and the hip thing to do was to go to an evil church where her father jackhammered himself to death a few hours earlier.
Paramore - "Fast In My Car"
So I like this new album.
Glad to hear it, I like it too.
Jars of Clay - Flood
Cult of Luna- "I: The Weapon"
A bit of a gap from this year for me. It's good so far.
Steve Miller Band - "Jet Airliner"
Perfect credits theme for Anchorman 2.
Army of Lovers= "Say Goodbye to Babylon"
Well, this is much better than ABBA. Although honestly, every Swedish pop act I've heard is better than ABBA. Seriously, what's the appeal of ABBA?
Quote from: Avaitor on December 27, 2013, 08:47:26 PM
Seriously, what's the appeal of ABBA?
I think that's THE question of the past three+ decades. I honestly don't try to answer such a question for fear of a brain aneurysm or three. Everything about ABBA was such pure cheese. The single from the solo album "I Know There's Something Going On" by Frida might be one of the very few works which has earned my respect. Very powerful sounding 80s track. Strong vocals, strong guitar, strong drums. I listen to it just for Phil Collins' drum work on it.. it's gorgeous.

Primus - "Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers"

Good choices, Il and Nel. :)
Listening to the album Conexion by Alcohol Jazz. Definitely a worthwhile purchase. This song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jr2K85Pjbos) kinda' reminds me of the Lupin III theme.
The Dead Weather- "I Can't Hear You"
I still maintain that this is Jack White's best act by far.

I can't claim to be an expert on their discography or anything but... I like them. Of course, there are few artists / groups I literally sit down with for longer than 20 or so minutes at a time (Rihanna is a frequent exception) (unless we're talking just repeating the same song over and over again), so perhaps every album they ever waxed was just that. An instant relic. But most of their famed material seems to live on and be protected under the Cult Hit banner. And that is more than fine with me. I think "Mamma Mia" is fantastic, "Honey Honey" is heady and entirely solid as fuzzy dancefloor material, "Dancing Queen" might be one of the greatest pop music contradictions every created- it sort of single-handedly gave birth to its very own
Gremlins. If you've never seen the original
Prom Night, they used disco as a kind of Beat of the Grim Reaper theme throughout. But DQ is even better at feeling like the kind of song that would play, in one form or another, if ever there were a Prom Queen hanging / beheading or remembrance ceremony in a soapy TV-movie about Sarah Michelle Gellar dying in a crunchy car crash. And, to these senses, "SOS" is untouchable. Inarguably perfect. If you don't like it-
You don't like it. That simple.
Also, they were an important theme in the film
Muriel's Wedding.
I'm currently trying to get into Army of Lovers, but they lost me quickly after the one song I already liked from
Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead.
Whitesnake- "Still of the Night"
This is a very good song, and I do feel as if Whitesnake are under appreciated sometimes.
^ One can't argue their choruses aren't masterful.
Napalm Death- "Christening of the Blind"
I've been listening to a lot of ND lately.
Rob Thomas - "This Is How a Heart Breaks"
The Rolling Stones- "Stop Breaking Down"
Ice Cube - "Check Yo Self (2010 remix)"

The Smashing Pumpkins- "Geek USA"
Grand Funk Railroad - "The Loco-Motion".
So tacky, but so awesome.
Gwen Stefani - "Breakin' Up"
For about the 16th time in a row.
Ornette Coleman- "Eventually"
It's got me again, the tidal wave of face-freezing, rationality-throbbing, awesomeshock that is:

"My Party" by Icona Pop. Holy...fuck, this is something amazing. It's not supposed to be. It's supposed to be irritating, whiny, intolerable because the lyrics are technically just complaining about a spoiled (likely heiress's / socialite's) party going to hell. Yet, it isn't. It's inspired.
Death Cab for Cutie - "Crooked Teeth"
Velocity Girl - "I Can't Stop Smiling"
Incubus - "Stellar"
Anaal Nathrakh- "Le Diabolique Est L'Ami Du Simplement Mal"
Alanis Morissette - "Wake Up"
Cult of Luna- "Mute Departure"
This album is pretty weird, but in a good way. I'm not sure where it'd rank on my list for last year, but I've had a few good listens out of it.
That "Carry Me Home Maybe" mashup of 2012 songs... I just came across it randomly- never heard it before.
Glorior Belli- "Ain't No Pit Deep Enough"
Train - "Meet Virginia"
I was just searching for who wrote this, and I can't believe it's Train. I've gained such a seething hatred for every single they've released in the past five years it's hard to believe they ever released anything listenable.
Rainbow- "L.A. Connection"
Tina Turner. Alternating between "Girls" and "I Can't Stand the Rain."
Tina's always a good choice.
Black Sabbath- "Changes"
In terms of overall songwriting, this isn't very good at all. The lyrics are wishy-washy, the piano's bland, and Ozzy's voice just isn't suited for softer songs. But the novelty of Sabbath doing a piano ballad? I think that alone makes the song the fascinating curio that it is.
Quote from: Avaitor on January 26, 2014, 01:43:27 PMTina's always a good choice.

Although, not so much when we get to
Foreign Affair.
Noothgrush- "Thoth"
This spilt with Coffins is great!
Gaga's "Venus" on repeat.
B.F. Shelton- "Pretty Polly"
I was recommended to check out this collection of vintage ballads, and the selection here is mighty strong if it's your type of music.
Veruca Salt - "Awesome"
James Brown- "The Bells"
Jimmy Eat World - Goodbye Sky Harbor
Beautiful.
Avril Lavigne - "Girlfriend"

I only like the song because of it's inclusion in Burnout Paradise(which totally doesn't fit the tone of the game).
I remember going to a Just Dance party one of my friends hosted, and two of them competed against each other to this song. The choreography for it was rightfully silly.
It's a very strange (demented) mid-aughts rollerskating-type jam. Schoolgirly, bitchy, gum-snappy, self-absorbed, but... probably the most fun thing she's ever done. I was not a fan of her baggy-pants ballads. The ones she got famous for. "I'm with You" and "Complicated." (Half-ballad, half what was left of late 90's grindy guitars.)
Now I'm checking out Peaches' 1995 debut album, Fancypants Hoodlum, under her real name, Merrill Nisker (mrtzcmp3.net has the whole thing)... I literally just found out she had an album in 1995, so... Wish I could describe the style. I've heard it before. It's very emulating the style of another band. But, unfortunately, I just never listened to them much. I want to say... Primus. Only a lot more ghetto. Especially "I Want Something." I am loving her rendition of "Kung Fu Fighting" though.

Queensryche- "Lady Jane"
Lady Gaga - "Aura" and "ArtPop"
Tony Iommi- "I Go Insane"
Little history fact: In the mid-80's, Iommi disbanded Black Sabbath and worked on his first solo album, with Glenn Hughes as the lead singer. He got it all made, named it Seventh Star, and was just about to release it, until Warner got cold feet about him going solo, and begged him to title it as a Sabbath album and go on tour under the name. He relented, and that's how that album fit into the canon. Almost 20 years later, Iommi finally got to make his own dang solo album, even featuring Hughes on vocals. Isn't it nice how things work out?
Alternating between "Royals" and Miley's "SMS (Bangerz)." Repeating both.
I'm watching Maiden's Beast Over Hammersmith concert now. I like how it starts off with "Murders in the Rue Morgue", which I'd gladly trade to be on this setlist for at least half of what is on now.
Rihanna's "Where Have You Been"
again.
Jimmy Eat World - Cautioners
Miley - "We Can't Stop"
Steel Panther- "Death to All But Metal"
I can't help but wonder if I'm a bad person for liking Steel Panther, considering how blatantly sexist and homophobic they go for the sake of a joke in songs like this. But then I end up just not caring and keep on listening.
If Eminem and Tyler the Creator can get away with it...

I would have called them "egotists," myself.
Gaga's
The Fame (first whole album in a while, other than The Beatles) - only, not in proper sequence.
Agalloch- "She Painted Fire Across the Skyline I"
Still in the Gagasphere.
This time it's "Manicure." Which used to be my 2nd least favorite song on the album. Not anymore.
The Mars Volta- "Televators"
De-Loused In The Comatorium is still one of the greatest albums ever made, as far as I'm concerned. :)
Goldfrapp - "Little Bird"
I can't believe I didn't love this song the first time I heard it... but, somehow, I didn't.
Galactic - Dolla Diva (feat. David Shaw & Maggie Koerner)
Fantastic.
The Kills- "No Wow"
Sometimes I forget just how much I like this band.
The Knife - "Heartbeats"
The Turtles- "Food"
M.I.A. - "Sunshowers"
Queensryche- "Operation: Mindcrime"
The lyrics on this album are actually consistently perfect. Still one of the best concept albums ever made.
Lady Gaga (featuring T.I., Too $hort, and Twista) - "Jewels n' Drugs"
Probably my current favorite song on the album: best example I've heard yet of Gaga's auditory sci-fi futurism. I adore this.
Jimmy Eat World - If You Don't, Don't
This album holds up exceptionally well. Though I have never been all too fond of the title track the rest is still top notch.
Nina Hagen - "(Viva Las) Vegas"
RIP Paco de Lucia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oABACBhmhCg&feature=kp)
Peter Gabriel - "I Have the Touch" (4:36 version)
Wishbone Ash- "Blowin' Free"
Now here's a pretty big gap on my hard/prog rock palette that's being rectified. Good stuff.
The Flirts - "Jukebox (Don't Put Another Dime)"
Elvis Presley - "All Shook Up"
Re-listening to one of my favorite albums in high school, Carl Craig's More Songs About Food and Revolutionary Art.
Electric Wizard- "Torquemada '71"
Been listening to a lot of their work lately. Always good.
David Bowie - "Underground"
The Kills- "I Hate the Way You Love"
Kate Bush - "The Big Sky"
Ago - Trying Over
I cannot stop listening to this.
Def Leppard- "Where Does Love Go When It Dies"
This album is kinda weird. Very reflective of the 90's, but there's still a bit of that Hysteria sound throughout. Not terrible, but I don't see it as the overlooked treasure that the band does.
Working on... (shoot me, please, somebody) ...extending my Best Singles of the 80's list. At this point, another entire hundred is coming. (So much link gathering... So many aspirin.)
Oh yeah, what's playing now.
Berlin - "Now It's My Turn" (Billy Joel before, Beastie Boys after)
David Bowie- "Starman"
I'll never understand why people consider this Bowie's best album, when pretty much everything else he did in the 70's was better, but it's still a classic.
Ziggy Stardust was my second Bowie album and it still has yet to click with me. Only song I like from it is Suffragette City, and that's mostly from Rock Band.
Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam - "I Wonder If I Take You Home"
Ministry- "Burning Inside"
Lady Gaga - "Applause"
I literally have no shame at this point.

Danzig- "Twist of Cain"
Blues Traveler - "Carolina Blues"
How was this not more popular? Don't care what anyone says, these guys still had plenty left in them after "Four".
Girls Aloud - "Good Advice"
Black Sabbath- "The Mob Rules"
YOU'RE ALL FOOLS
Zeppelin - "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You".
What do you guys think of Evanescence?
Saw them in concert before they were big back around 2002, the local radio station gave away tickets to shows by bands that were unknown at the time(I saw bands like Chevelle, Story of the Year, and Hawthorne Heights this way as well before they broke out). I honestly haven't listened to their music in several years, but I don't really dislike them, that's about as positive as I can say.
My sister had their first CD and I basically usurped it from her. Most of the songs on there sounded the same, "My Immortal" aside, but I really did like a couple of tracks.
I don't know where it is and I haven't been keeping up with them, but I always leave the station on when "Bring Me to Life" comes on.
The first half of the debut is excellent (the second half isn't anywhere near as memorable), the second album is uninspired garbage, and the third album is inbetween the first two in terms of quality. It sure as shit is a lot more listenable than the second one.
If you like them, talon, check out the one album by We Are The Fallen, it consists of the Evanescence members who left after the first album (including the guy who wrote most of the first album's hits), and some chick who was on American Idol. I don't think it's quite as good as the Evanescence debut, but I like it more than their second and third.
What I hear happened is that the singer (Amy something or other?) got a bit of an ego after the first album, the guy who was essentially writing everything left because of it, and it really showed on the second album because everything Amy wrote for it was mediocre. Could be wrong though.

Hmm..........well, "Going Under" is a great song. The rest of the album didn't do too much for me though. Second album was awful. Still haven't checked out the third.
Motley Crue- "Live Wire"
The only song worth giving a damn about on their first album IMO. The rest of it has this weird DIY production to it which does not fit with the band's sound at all.
As far as Evanescence goes, the only songs I would call myself a big fan of are Bring Me to Life and My Immortal. I love both songs a lot, though. Kind of wish they'd play at the Mann Center, though.
Silversun Pickups- "Broken Bottles"
This EP was so good, ugh.
Had to look it up. Never even heard of that EP. :(
Must have it!
Jimmy Eat World - Lucky Denver Mint
Seriously, y'all.
I love old Jimmy Eat World. Haven't listened to their last couple records though.
Midtown - "Become What You Hate".
It's okay overall... the stuff is more atmospheric than anything. Their peak albums are still "Clarity" and "Bleed American" (or "Jimmy Eat World" depending if it was a post-9/11 version or not) which still hold up really well.
I'm really surprised either aren't as regarded as they should be. Alternative rock fans used to be all over those albums.

I'm not actually sure if you'd like them. They're a bit on the lighter/poppier end of the spectrum. The closest band I can relate them to is Weezer, but their songs aren't quite as tight as JEW's (that is weird) are. I was more speaking in a general sense, though that might because their last few albums haven't been anything amazing.
If you were to give one a chance first, I would go with Clarity.
Cynic - True Hallucination Speak
Not bad.
I can't say I liked the new Cynic that much. The middle four tracks of it are alright, but the two at the beginning and the end just don't do much for me. Whole thing just feels like a weaker Traced In Air.

I don't regret trying new things though, so thanks for giving me the chance, Avaitor!
Yeah, I remembered before it was too late that jazz or heavier prog aren't much of your thing, which is what the band has been embracing a lot lately, but I just wanted to see someone besides Nel talk about the album, heh.

Just started this track. It's okay so far.

Though honestly I find a LOT of music needs to grow on me these days. I'm getting curmudgeonly in my mid-20s, but I still warm up to things after a while. That's how it was with the other Cynic stuff.

Melvins- "Zodiac"
Jimmy Eat World - "Sweetness"
Ahhhhh way to go Spark, you got me on a kick now. >_<
Checking out some 90's Apollo 440. If you never heard of them, they're the band that did that poppy techno song "Ya can't stop the rock- don't stop the rock" that you heard on tv in the background on shows like Daria. This was the days of stuff like Moby's "Bodyrock," Fatboy Slim's "Praise You," and that "Start the Commotion" song from Zoolander, so the definition of techno changed quite a bit to being like Tarantino-esque genre mixes (faster than Beck, liTer than Cornelius). I don't mind saying that wasn't my favorite time in electronic music. Their earlier to mid 90's stuff is pretty interesting. Shy of their cover version of "Don't Fear the Reaper." Their sound began lightening up around '96 to get as pop as "Stop the Rock". Before that, they were heavier than Fluke. A great surprise to me. Anyway, since I'm not the biggest fan of "Rock," I think I can say that their change of sound was a mistake. Right now, I'm playing "Heart Go Boom" and it's flat-out awful.
Cold Cave- "Love Comes Close"
Their new album should be out this year. I really hope so, since their first 2 are landmarks.
Robin Thicke featuring Kendrick Lamar - "Give It 2 U"
For... research. Yeah, that's it. (Seriously, I like this even more than "Blurred Lines." Yes, I liked "Blurred Lines.")
I liked the video to Blurred Lines. That redhead is hot.
Okay... for whatever reason, I keep clicking Play on tracks on Robin Thicke's 2013 album (I hadn't heard anything but "Blurred Lines" and GI2U)... HOLY HELL! I've only found 1 so far that I didn't like (the single he decided should follow "Blurred Lines" directly, "For the Rest of My Life" - bad choice). "Take It Easy on Me" should have been a single. I also adore "Ain't No Hat 4 That."

Bleed American (or yeah, the self-titled one depending on when you bought it) is especially addicting. Great album.
The Who- "Love is Coming Down"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3Qfq5xBq1g
I knew they'd been making new music but I assumed it was all like "Chaos" (repeating their earlier hits, "Ice Cream" and "The Bomb"). I love this. The video is...something else too.
Gotham City- "1999"
This is an 80's Swedish traditional heavy metal band I just discovered, and they're pretty good. They remind me of Saxon quite a lot.
"Call Me Maybe"
Been stuck in my damn head for hours.
Animals As Leaders - The Joy Of Motion
6ix Toys - "Do Your Thing"
Peaches - "Trick or Treat"
Missing Persons - "Walking in L.A."
Robin Thicke - "Ooo La La"
Even Justin Timberlake would swoon over this. Make this a single, Robin!!
I can't stop listening to "We Built This City". What is wrong with me?
When I listen to people slag that song, I mostly hear how different Grace Slick and the band's style used to be from this point in their careers. I don't hear a lot of solid criticism on the song itself. Just: it's lousy.
Which I get how people can think it is. But I've heard worse. Quite a bit worse.
Because it's pure, unadulterated, grade-A cheese. It's not bad by any means, it's just so darn cheesy, it couldn't be more 80's if it tried.
It's really hard to nail down that Signature 80's Sound in one song. But, if I tried, I really think anything from Stock-Aitken-Waterman would be my first stop.
A: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMCXx5k01Tg (I really think this one might be The One)

I like most 80s pop music(either ironically or unironically, depending on what it is), but I fucking hate this song. No thank you.
Most of S.A.W.'s songs were fairly monstrous. Although, "Cruel Summer" will always garner a fair amount of genuine, entirely unironic critical respect. Deservedly so.
Meanwhile, I'm sort of working on Best Horror Themes mix-cd thing. I still don't play CD's anymore, but I really enjoy making up the track lists. Right now, I'm playing "Verso L'Ignoto (L'Aldila)" from Fulci's The Beyond.
The For Carnation- "Emp. Man's Blues"
Nine Inch Nails - "Reptile"
Cranked up REALLY loud. bwah-ha-haaa!
Jimmy Eat World - Your House
TLC, specifically the videos for "Creep" and "Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg" back to back...
Biggest shot of nostalgia in the arm I've had in years.
TLC seems to be a recurring theme on this board.
I quite like their first two albums.
Jimmy Eat World - If You Don't, Don't
Back in the day, I didn't bother to listen to their 3rd album. I just hit the Amazon.com/CD-Now (ahh, the 90's) samples for
FanMail, but I love "Good at Being Bad" and "Silly Ho." They're trashy and not in the original vein of their signature style but work well for the attitude we had (as teens) at the time. We were definitely becoming less sophisticated in 1999 and ready to let loose with some fatty, carefree garbage. Even "No Scrubs" at least had more flavor to it than stuff like Lit, Smash Mouth, Len, etc. They couldn't all be Moby's.
Quote from: Comeau on March 30, 2014, 06:28:47 PMTLC seems to be a recurring theme on this board.
I'd like to think they were a cornerstone in everyone's nostalgia. But, usually, it's kids of the next decade looking back and discovering what we knew all along.
Yo, Lit was cool. Don't be hating on Lit, that one album with the hit songs was alright. It's like that one Alien Ant Farm album(again, the one with the hit songs).
TLC just makes me think of mid-90s VH1. And that's not bad at all.
Man, VH1 played it so ridiculously safe in the 90's. They didn't play any rap, grunge, industrial, etc(.) until maybe 2003 or somewhere around there. When they launched their Celebreality thing and became the channel of The Surreal Life, Hogan Knows Best, Flavor of Love, The Fabulous Life of, etc.
Avril Lavigne - "Complicated".
Really great song.
Nazareth- "May the Sunshine"
Madness - Believe Me
I think the tenor sax might be the best instrument almost nobody uses in music.
Ghoul- "As Your Casket Closes"
Thrash with surf riffs. I dig.
Snoop... - "Who Am I? What's My Name?"
Frank Zappa- "St. Alfonzo's Pancake Breakfast"
Southern Culture on the Skids - "White Trash"
Nuclear Death- "The Colour of Blood"
Rihanna - "Diamonds"
Slint- "Good Morning, Captain"
Faith No More - King For A Day... Fool For A Lifetime
Betty Boo - "Where Are You Baby?"
Buddy Holly & The Crickets - Down The Line
Opeth- "Windowpane"
Smashing Pumpkins - "Today"
I'm watching the Real World tribute to Pedro Zamora (where this song is playing) who died in November 1994 after working to his death trying to educate the 90's youth of the U.S. about AIDS. President Clinton spoke, live, in-person, at his memorial and called him on his deathbed, and flew his entire family into Miami from Cuba.
Good luck ever convincing me either Bush was a better leader.

They played "Walk Like an Egyptian" during Jojo's. I am pleasantly confused.

Man this song is a trip.
Madonna singing "Like a Virgin" live, with acoustic guitar.
Not a bad performance, considering she forgot nearly half the lyrics.
The Hong Kong Knife - "Cherished Memories"
Orange Range - "Shanghai Honey"
Crazy Town - "Butterfly"
Krayzie Bone - "Ridin' Dirty" (I'm not a big fan of hip-hop, but the refrain is stupidly infectious)
Sick of It All- "Who Sets the Rules"
I'm giving them another chance to impress this girl. It's not really workig.
Alcest- "Away"
Someone compared this song, and basically the album, to Slowdive, and I can definitely see it. I think it's a strong contender for AOTY so far.
Paramore - "Ain't It Fun"
Man I love the new album, it just gets better with each listen.
Big Star- "What's Going Ahn"
Yeah, I actually quite love Ain't It Fun.
Rolling Stones - "Angie"
W.A.S.P.- "Sleeping (In the Fire)"
Harry Chapin - "Taxi"
I think. I'm not playing it but I can hear it on the radio in another room.
Agalloch- "The Lodge"

Like I dunno, this album is a lot more pop than their last three, but I still love it. Like there really isn't a bad song to be found here.
I still really like the whole album, honestly. I've never been much of a Paramore fan, but I thought the album was remarkably strong. All the songs are really well written.
I really only like the first two albums, but hey, credit where it's due. I really like Ain't It Fun and Part II (fitting, as it's part 2 to Let The Flames Begin, one of my favorites off of Riot!), and Monster's a great song.
As for me, I bought Morning Parade's first album two days ago, and the new one came out today, so I'm digging into those.
The Suburbs - Love Is The Law
This song sounds like it was a huge 80s hit, but it wasn't big at all. Odd, because it really does sound like it would have been huge back then. Nonetheless, it is a fun little song.
I know this isn't actually Paramore, but it's Hayley Williams (and she's awesome). Anyone know her song "Stay the Night"? I just feel like mentioning that song does nothing for me.
But yeah, Ain't it Fun is awesome.
Sorry, I just can't do Paramore. I've tried the new album, but I still can't do it.
It's about time they start to cut back on Happy.
I'm hearing Dalek sing the Sword Art Online opening right now.
Nostalgia tripping again... this time, Sheryl Crow triggered it. The UK really loved her in the early 90's, they made exclusive singles out of "Run, Baby Run" and "What I Can Do for You" and got her before America did. Her first American single ("Leaving Las Vegas"- which I adore, one of my favorite of her songs) dropped about 7 months after her album was released.

My mother probably had Billy Squier on vinyl back in the early 80's, but I remember the song mostly from carnivals / fairs, they liked to play it on outdoor rides that - of course - spun around a lot.
I personally like "In the Dark" a lot more.

Devin Townsend - Epicloud
First time listening to any of Devin's stuff. I'm loving this. I love when you can get so many different kinds of songs on an album, and yet they go together so well. Hell, they even segue into each other fantastically here. It's like a musical roller coaster. Regret not getting into this guy's stuff sooner.
Mindless Self Indulgence - "Fuck Machine" (Flock of Jimmy's Remix)
The original of this song when compared to this remix is like a difference between night and day. Quite a change in context!
Todd's newest review was the first time I ever had the notion to check out "The Harlem Shake" and... I think I agree with him. It does kind of suck.
Only, I can't agree with him on "Turn Down for What." Which I guess is my cue to say: I could get behind dubstep... but I think it's time to send trap back to the factory. It's not done cooking.

They're from her follow-up to Jagged. It's a pretty cool album, and that was my first time listening. It won't be my last.
Ahh: Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie. I only have a few tracks from the album, but they're all incredible- "Front Row," "That I Would Be Good," "Are You Still Mad," and the singles- "So Pure" and "Thank U."
Some of her better stuff after SFIJ should have been singles- "21 Things I Want in a Lover." I don't know why they weren't.
Brian Setzer - Far Noir East
overkill- "Live Young, Die Free"
Making a Forrest Gump soundtrack mix-CD, because of course the only interesting thing about the movie is the music, and even though there is easily an hour of extra songs (a CD will only fit 80 minutes) my goal is to best boil the movie's chosen songs into 1 disc's worth. 79 minutes. Here's what I have and what I downloaded but have decided to cut:
Making the Cut:
1. "For What It's Worth"
2. "Sweet Home Alabama"
3. "Break On Through (to the Other Side)"
4. "Respect"
5. "Fortunate Son"
6. "Let's Get Together"
7. "Land of 1000 Dances"
8. "Hey Joe"
9. "California Dreamin'"
10. "Hound Dog"
11. "Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There is a Season)"
12. "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head"
13. "Mrs. Robinson"
14. "Stoned Love"
15. "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair)"
16. "Rebel Rouser"
17. "Go Your Own Way"
18. "Everybody's Talkin'"
19. "Volunteers"
20. "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)"
21. "On the Road Again"
22. "Joy to the World"
23. "Medley: Aquarius / Let the Sunshine In"
24. "Blowin' in the Wind"
25. "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35"
Being Cut:
"Against the Wind"
"All Along the Watchtower"
"Get Down Tonight"
"Hanky Panky"
"(I Don't Know Why) But I Do"
"It Keeps You Runnin'"
"I've Got to Use My Imagination"
"Let's Work Together"
"Love Her Madly"
"Lovesick Blues"
"Mr. President (Have Pity on the Working Man)" (oh, GOD Doug wasn't kidding about Randy Newman)
"Running On Empty"
"Sloop John B"
"Soul Kitchen"
"Sugar Shack"
"Walk Right In"
"What the World Needs Now is Love"
Outkast- "Da Art of Storytellin'"
Van Halen - "Little Dreamer".

ELP- "Karn Evil 9: 1st Impression, Pt. 2"
Curiosity strikes again: checking out some songs I've never heard by artists I of course know of...
This is, total honesty, the very first time I've ever heard Fergie's "London Bridge." I swear. It's pretty damn shocking. But, after something as how the hell could they? as "Clumsy" (maybe this one bothers me more because I actually know "Girl Can't Help It") and "Here I Come" (which of course completely rips off The Temptations' "Get Ready"), I have to say- I like this. And I already liked Gwen's "Hollaback Girl" but this just puts that to shame. This is pure audio sleaze. Perfect trash. Utterly glorious in every way. I'm giving it the full:
(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fen%2Fd%2Fd7%2FFergie_-_London_Bridge.png&hash=4fba59791ab25b32f3ed1fabdd5e48eb719469fe)

If there's a right way to rip-off another song, assuming this sounds like an exact copy, this is the right way to do it.
I also decided to check out what Icona Pop and Lorde have done after their big hits. Lorde's sound really rides that chilly laidback samesongy "Royals," the best of which being "Glory and Gore." Icona Pop I wish I could say nicer things about, but they really just SCREAM on every song they do. With one exception, the pretty good "Just Another Night."
Of my discoveries, Fergie's beautiful "Finally" and nasty-amazing "London Bridge" are the standouts.
Electric Wizard- "Saturnine"
Not sure if this is their best, but I come back to it as much as Dopethrone, which is telling.
Kongos - "Come With Me Now"
Crazy to think that this is already three years old, yet is just now getting noticed by people (don't think anybody in the States even knew about it until just a few months ago, myself included). Cool as heck though.
The Clash- "I'm So Bored with the USA"
The Jam - Slow Down
Esquerita- "I Got a Lot to Learn"
Apparently, he was a big influence on Little Richard, and I can totally see it.
Over the past few days.

Frank Zappa- "200 Years Old"
Otis Redding - Security
Azealia Banks - "212"

Just a little Aquabats lately.
Stuck in a Movie and High Five City in particular are awesome.

Public Image Ltd- "Rise"
The Blasters - So Long Baby Goodbye
Churchill's "Change", which was really popular last summer.
Turns out they broke up shortly after that. I had no idea. I remembered the song while scrolling through my iTunes (the song was free for a short time last year), and had been wondering why they never seemed to capitalize on that fifteen minutes. I've been scouring the internet to find out why, and it seems from what I'm finding, that the male and female singers were screwing. Both were already married to other people. :wth: Way to throw away that shot at success and your marriages for some poon, guys. Hopefully the other band members found something they enjoyed after the break-up.

Found this at the local video game shop today for a couple bucks. Greatest soundtrack ever, the only one that matches it is the classic rock station in San Andreas.
Rocking Slayer's "Raining Blood" at the moment.
I was always more of a fan of San Andreas' modern rock station, although I wish that they played Motorhead's "Hellraiser" instead of Ozzy's version. ;)
If I'm not mistaken, Motorhead did that song specifically for Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth. (In my opinion, the only tolerable sequel of the franchise.)
Re-doing my 999 Singles of the 1990's... and I can't tell you how intensive this is. As I basically go through the numbers and decide that "this song is right for number 330, 331," etc, etc, the hours are flying by and after over 4 hours of re-listening and carefully deciding how far up or down the list a particular song needs to be repositioned... maybe 5 hours, I've only finalized about 34 songs. It's 10:30 and I truly don't know long I've been sitting here.
But, anyway, a few songs have been tossed, opening up slots and there might be room for Aerosmith's "Eat the Rich" if it impresses me on a replay. (It might be in competition with "Not Forgotten" by Leftfield, "Milk" by Garbage, and "Blackout" by Apollo 440. But, we'll see.)

Lemmy actually wrote the song for Ozzy, alongside a couple of other songs for
No More Tears, including "Mama, I'm Coming Home". And I guess he liked it enough to record a version of the song himself, which made it onto Hellraiser III and their next album.
Ah. Then, for the movie's sake, they lucked into it.
Anyway, finally listened to the radio yesterday (first time since "Gold Digger" was actually a hit, so it's been awhile), and caught Izzy & Charley's "Fancy." Yawn. And this is from someone who didn't yawn when they heard "Whip My Hair" for the first time a week earlier.
Also stumbled across something called Pretty Reckless. Put Pink, Lady Gaga, and Marina & the Diamonds into a blender.
Bad Brains- "Leaving Babylon"
Weird Al - Word Crimes
This man's work will never get old.
You know what are two radio songs that I despise? Wake Me Up, and Happy. Two unimpressive songs that somehow gained enough popularity to be played constantly every day.
The only question is, which of the two songs I hate more. Wake Me Up is the worse song as it's just typical radio dance floor slop, whereas Happy can admittedly be a bit catchy the first few times you hear it. However, Happy is more overplayed than Wake Me Up ever was (I think radio stations began to cut down on Wake Me Up when listeners began to realize that it's not really a good song), so my hate for both kind of evens out at some point.

I used to be a rabid fan of WAY... and, without question, "The Saga Begins" is what killed my ability to latch onto anything new he did after that (wow was 1999 the wrong time to parody a Don McLean song) (1985 on the other hand? Perfect time to "go after" The Kinks). I'm ecstatic, because I do remember the old fan in me, that he's finally getting the kind of validation for his success that has eluded him for quite awhile. Though, to be fair, he's had a lot of downtime over the last 12 or so years. And, until now, nothing he's done since "It's All About the Pentiums" has in any way glued itself to the reputation of the song he's chosen to parody. I mean, the old adage is that Al's parodies affirmed the success of a song or artist in popular culture. Which it certainly did when he was parodying Michael Jackson, Madonna, Red Hot Chili Peppers, TLC, Nirvana, and even Puff Daddy (and... how the hell did he remain popular without any actual music for over 15 friggin' years after scoring a few hits? That is just
not right). I have no clue what "White and Nerdy" was based on or who did it, and
South Park kind of beat Al out for exposure and relevance on that R. Kelly parody.
But, finally Al is proving that he's been paying attention. I didn't even know he parodied "Fancy" until I saw the
Kids React episode last night. And the second "Foil" came up, I said "he really should have gone after Iggy Azalea instead. But I guess that song is too new..." Now I have to rush off to YouTube and see "Handy."

Savatage- "Warriors"
So this doesn't really fit into the thread. But tonight, at the music venue I work for, there was a Lorde concert. Now I'm not really the hugest fan of this girl, however, the concert was awesome (at least the parts I heard). It was just really fun, maybe the most fun concert I've worked all summer, and you could really feel the fun in the whole venue.
The Kills- "The Good Ones"
U2 released their new album for free on iTunes today. I got home from work and just found that a random new album had auto-downloaded into my library. I'll take it!
Tom Petty- "Southern Accents"
My uncle saw this tour, and he did use a Confederate flag for the back. Not cool... but it's still a good album.
Other than Kelly Clarkson and, to a certain extent, Carrie Underwood, I feel like I am so over everyone who was ever on American Idol.
How many other people from there besides Daughtry have had much of a career after it?

Clay Aiken did pretty well, though I'm not sure how well he's still doing at this point in time. I also couldn't tell you many radio songs he's done.
Daughtry is good, too.
I remember Clay Aiken doing okay for a while, yeah. I don't know what he's been up to after Spamalot, though.
From what I can tell, Idol stars usually have one successful album, if that, and fade away into obscurity after a little while. Kelly Clarkson, Cary Underwood and Daughtry are the exceptions to the rule that I can think of.
Interpol - El Pintor
Uriah Heep- "Lucy Blues"
Tripping Daisy - Field Day Jitters
This is probably going to go down being one of my favorite track ones.
The Mountain Goats- "You'e So Vain"
This is one of the best covers I've ever heard.
Kinda in a Halloween-ish mood..
Ministry - Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPthevXtAQU) :il_hahaha:
I have to believe that Al Jourgensen decided to have a pissing contest with Marilyn Manson to see who could come up with the creepier version. Manson's cover is more listenable than this by far.
Fantômas - Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diR4dCn0R0s)
Recent news of the series' return made me dig around for music.
This is Mike Patton's re-imagined version of the theme song to the Twin Peaks movie. Kinda creepy. Just kinda. ;D
Tripping Daisy - Our Drive To The Sun/Can A Man Mark It?
The endpoint of '90s alternative. It was a good end, though.
Kurt Rosenwinkel Standards Trio- "Fall"
Childish Gambino- "All the Same"
Okay, this is quite good.
Bump!
Thin Lizzy- "Angel of Death"
Stray Cats - Ubangi Stomp
Never get enough of these guys.
Rush- "2112"
Yeah, it's that kind of night. Great to study with, too!
Megadeth - Peace Sells...But Who's Buying? (album)
Michael Jackson- "The Way You Make Me Feel"
Punk Jazz: The Jaco Pastorius Anthology
That sounds beautiful.
Peter Gabriel- "Lead a Normal Life"
Nine Inch Nails - "Head Like a Hole"
G.O.A.T and Your Mother - "Can You Quack?" (I've been watching a lot of YouTube lately) :oo:
Townes Van Zandt- "Brand New Companion" (Live at the Old Quarter)
Stone Temple Pilots - "Pretty Penny"
Weekend Nachos- "Broken Mirror"
Such a great, heavy album.
Garbage - "I Think I'm Paranoid"
Sunn 0))) & Scott Walker- "Herod 2014"
I forget if I put this in my list for last year or not. What a great collaboration.
Soundgarden - "Rusty Cage"
The Divine Comedy- "Here Comes the Flood"
I like this. It's almost as if Brian Wilson and Voltaire collaborated with each other.
Veruca Salt - "Volcano Girls"
Christ, it's like the ultimate 90's kick lately.
Abigor- "Kingdom of Darkness"
Damn, this is great black.
Jurassic 5 - The Way We Do It (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymMnVEgsRwM)
So good; it's like they never left. New album when?
The Guess Who - "Undun"
Elder- "Compendium"
Just started their new album out, and it's solid so far. I hope it keeps up.
Modest Mouse - "Lampshades On Fire"
Awww man, their new album. Just, yes.
It's definitely a grower. I liked Lampshades and The Ground Walks right off the bat, but the rest has been taking a while to catch on.
Tom Petty- "Breakdown" (Pack Up the Plantation)
One of my favorite things at shows is when artists let the audience sing for them for a little- here, Tom lets them sing up to the chorus after he gets the first line down. Awesome.
The Rolling Stones- "Beast of Burden"
So I'm seeing them next Friday. Seems like a good time to get back into their stuff.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCju1qPqPEU (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCju1qPqPEU)
ZZ Top- "My Head's in Mississippi"
BTO - Roll On Down the Highway
Their best song.
Aerosmith- "One Way Street"
As unpolished as the first album is, it's still pretty killer.
Knife Party -"Red Dawn" and "Kaleidoscope"
The Glitch Mob - "Fly by Night Only"
Roger Roger - "Coconut Coast"
My buddy and I saw Yes back in November 2008, second row. We were two of the younger people in the audience, my buddy, a bass enthusiast himself, decked out in his death metal clothing, me in my StS shirt, and my favorite part of that concert... Chris Squire, who had a complete look of concentration all show, spots us, looks right at us, cracks a smile, and plays on. We were both giddy like schoolchildren.
Rest in Peace, sir. Spinning a lot of Yes tonight. :(
It's hard to believe, but wow. RIP
Urge Overkill - Honesty Files
Micki! and I were talking about good hip hop, and he sent me Cars & Shoes, so now I'm listening to The Coup for the first time.
This shit is damn good.
Never Could Have Been Worse from the Trigun First Donuts soundtrack.
Def Leppard- "Rocket"
I'm still not much for Hysteria, but this is one of the better tracks.
The Coup - Me and Jesus the Pimp in a '79 Granada Last Night
This might be the greatest hip-hop song ever recorded. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPr1JLoYLW4
Dio- "Don't Talk to Strangers"
Urge Overkill - Nite and Grey
David Bowie- "Unwashed and Somewhat Slightly Dazed"
The Police - "Message in a Bottle"
Urge Overkill - Back On Me
I always forget how great Saturation is. Definitely one of the best albums of the '90s.
Health's new album Death Magic. Loved their work on the Max Payne 3 soundtrack and this album's pretty great too.
Aerosmoth- "Just Push Play"
This is kind of so bad that it's good. Like, the beat and riff are pretty good, but I have no idea what Steven is trying to say, and the rap sections are... what.
It's also the most rocking song on the album, which says everything you need to know about it.
Jaded was the best song on that album.
I still say Beyond Beautiful's a great song.
Quote from: Nel_Annette on September 02, 2015, 06:04:37 PM
I still say Beyond Beautiful's a great song.
That's easily the best song on the ablu. These are like the only good songs... and then "Jaded" hits. That's when it loses me lol
Iron Maiden- "The Red and the Black"
This album is already top tier for me.
Iron Maiden is one of the few bands that I will drop everything I'm doing to listen to a new album. Loving the fuck out of Book Of Souls.
Talking Heads- "(Nothing But) Flowers"
MGMT - "I Found a Whistle"
Cream- "Sweet Wine"
MGMT - "Brian Eno"
Their second album is way better than people give it credit for.
Urge Overkill - Tequila Sundae
Have any of you heard of that little indie folk band called Of Monsters and Men?
I like them. Second album's a bit uneven to me, but I really like "Crystals" and "Human".
They are one of the few modern day bands that I care about, actually. As for the second album, it might be a bit uneven, but Crystals is probably my favorite song they've ever done.
Nick Cave & the Black Seeds- "Black Hair"
Slayer- "Piano Wire"
I'm listening to the new album, and it's pretty samey. It's not their worst, but we're far from the band's glory days of the first five albums. This is the last song they used of Jeff's, and it's probably the best on here.
Electric Light Orchestra - "Fire on High"
I love the creepy start to this song. Think I read somewhere that Jeff Lynne did this in response to the ignorant criticisms he was getting about having "satanic messages" in some of his recordings. The album title "Face The Music", coupled with the eerie album picture of an empty electric chair was pretty much him giving the finger to such critics.
Backwards lyrics are always fun. ;D
(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/15/QueensrycheConditionHuman.png)
Finally gave it a proper listen all the way through. I love it. I freaking love it. This is what I wanted. The self-titled was good, but Condition Human is the comeback. Bulletproof is my favorite here. Just Us is a really good light song. All There Was is a great rocker. Pretty much every track is worth a listen. We have our long song at the end, we have a longer album length, the production doesn't irritate my ears as much. Combine this with that Dream Theater-esque album art, and yeah, I do believe we have a winner. This will probably be in my top ten of 2015 for sure.
Not sure there's anything on this I'd rank a masterpiece, but I'd easily rank this among the classics. I certainly enjoyed it the same way I enjoy the early stuff. And I can happily say "they're back".
I should get to the new Queensryche. Their previous album was good, but not the 5 star comeback it could have been.
Rory Gallagher- "Overnight Bag"
If the last one was like an old machine creaking back into motion, this one is basically the machine restored to its former glory and firing on all cylinders. That self-titled album was a good way to say that they still had fire in them after Tate basically ruined the band, but I honestly didn't think they'd put out something as good as their early stuff again. Check it out if you get the chance! :joy:
Slayer- "Seasons of the Abyss"
Ellie Goulding is such a shame. She has a really cool sounding voice, but I don't like literally any song she's ever done.
Minor Threat- "Good Guys"
I love her song "Lights". Whoever wrote that, she should have stuck with. I like parts of the first and second albums, but a lot of the tracks are really inferior. Will give Delirium a listen to tomorrow.
The Mountain Goats- "The Mess Inside"
Motorhead- "Keep Us on the Road" (Peel Sessions version)
Inspiral Carpets - Saturn 5
Steely Dan- "Deacon Blues"
One of the most beautiful songs ever made, IMO.
Prince- "Sometimes it Snows in April"
Death - Crystal Mountain
Def Leppard- "Hysteria"
I'm not really a fan of this album, but this is probably my favorite song of their entire discography. It reminds me of a Smashing Pumpkins song (you know the kind I mean, more "1979" than "Zero"), but with an extra touch of beauty to it. Doesn't sound like any other ballad from that era at all.
In honor of Rohan Kishibe's entrance into anime, Bob Dylan - Knockin' on Heaven's Door (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJpB_AEZf6U)
The Edgar Winter Group- "Rock 'n' Roll Boogie Woogie Blues"
UFO- "Oh My"
Wow, we haven't used this board in months!
Type O Negative - Red Water (Christmas Mourning)
It's that time of year again.
fun. - Carry On
Witch- "Soul of Fire"
This is J Mascis' doom band, and they're pretty good. They're not too traditionally doom- this song has a very Sonic Youth/Dino Jr-esq beat, and Mascis shreds a bit harder than you'd expect another guitarist in the genre to. That doesn't mean they're bad at all- on the contrary, I think this is a cool album.
Chuck Berry- "You Never Can Tell"
RIP
Anderson .Paak- "Milk 'n' Honey"
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers- "California"
So I haven't listened to the She's the One soundtrack all that much. I'm very familiar with "Walls", but didn't go much further in. I love the beauty in this one's brevity. It's a nice little track, and has me curious to check out the rest of the album.
Tegan and Sara - "Walking with a Ghost"
Man this entire album is great. And it's 13 years old, which I didn't realize it'd even been that long. And that makes me feel old.
I forgot to mention this, but I did find a country artist I like- Luke Combs.
He's probably best known for "Hurricane", which is pretty good, but I like his next hit (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXyxFMbqKYA) even better. My taste in country for the longest time has been more angsty stuff like Cash and Townes, but in truth, I don't really want to find modern versions of them. I also really don't like the current bro country trend or Taylor and Carrie wannabes that are still around. Something like this, which has a little more weight, but you can still pull a beer to and enjoy, is way more my speed.
When it Rains it Pours is a GOAT song.
Death Cab for Cutie - "Title and Registration"
It's Everyday Bro by Paulpuko and Paulpimi. (https://youtu.be/TKLxQrQS41I)
The new At the Gates single does not disappoint. It swings so damn hard.
KONGOS has been one of my new favs lately. You've undoubtedly heard this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bs3nH8bE1AE) - if only because every brand in existence was using it advertising for about a year or so and basically beat the life out of it - but their last album was really good and definitely deserves a look. Extremely my shit here. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wpxXODaSdo)
I put off buying Helmet's Aftertaste for many years since most reviews I read of it were bad and said it paled in comparison to Meantime and Betty. Well, I finally decided to give it a shot and it's actually a pretty good album. Sure, it's no Meantime or Betty but it has some underrated Helmet songs like It's Easy To Get Bored and (High) Visibility. Sometimes the reviewers get it right but it's ultimately better to listen to something yourself. Bad Religion's The Grey Race and No Substance get looked down upon but they are actually some really good albums with some of the band's most solid songs. I feel the same about Napalm Death's mid and late 90's era.
Made In Heights - "Murakami"
One of my new favorites; can't believe this has been out for three years and I'm just now hearing it. Great for getting work done at 3am.
Been binging through a lot of Sex Pistols recently. It makes me want to read some books about the punk rock scene and Sid Vicious' life.
Aretha Franklin - Respect (R.I.P.)
Well, truth be told I've listened to quite a bit of her today. Being a native Detroiter, we've seen it coming, but still it sucks. Michael Jackson is my favorite artist and I respect Prince but neither of their death's hit me. Aretha passing stung a little bit.
Yeah, Aretha is a massive loss. Granted, I recall there being a scare for her sake a few years ago, but the real thing happening makes it hurt all the same. Her library is incomparable.
Last night, it was some Evanescence since I was trying to see how I felt about them nowadays. The verdict being that while I think Amy Lee can still carry a tune, something about the songs I re-listened to just felt so... flat. I can't listen to them anymore.
At least I still have Within Temptation, though. They still rock.
YOB- "The Screen"
Not sure if I can do a list this year, since there's so much that I liked, limiting myself to 10 or even 20 might hurt. But this would definitely be near the top.
The Darkness- "Why Don't the Beautiful Cry?"
I forgot to check out their last album when it came out- it's pretty good!
Motorhead - Line in the Sand
I'm not into metal at all, but my goodness WWE/WCW has some good tunes back then. Makes me go down memory lane (4 horsemen theme is epic).
NF
I don't know if any of you heard of him, and I didn't know he was from Michigan, but at the moment he got me about ready to get rid of the majority of the rap and r&b music with no content I used to listen to (even 90's - early 2000's) that's on my phone. The guy doesn't curse at all and he's putting all of his emotions into every song.
So, back in the summer of 2018, Zach Callison (voice of Steven on Steven Universe) released an album called A Picture Perfect Hollywood Heartbreak. Finally got around to listening to it the other week, and I thought it was pretty good. It has a mid-2000s alt rock vibe in the vein of My Chemical Romance that I shamelessly enjoy, and is also host to this loose rock opera narrative that I feel flowed well enough. My favourite song is either She Don't Know or Interlude IV, the latter of which is admittedly more slam poetry than a full-on song. My least favourite, though it has started to grow on me after repeated listens, is War. It has a different feel than the rest of the album (feels less emo, for lack of a better in-the-moment descriptor), so it sticks out on the track list. It also happens to be the last track on the album, meaning the entire thing ends on a weak note. But like I said, I found it an enjoyable listening experience overall.
I've also been listening to the Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts Season 1 OST while working on a soapstone sculpture for class.
I haven't done one of these in a while!
Dynfari- "3rd Door: Madness"
I've been listening to the albums that were meant to be played in full at this year's Roadburn Festival, and thus far this is a favorite of the ones that are new to me. It's a concept album melding the theories of author Patrick Rothfuss and poet Jóhann Sigurjónsson. While it gets close to meandering bullshit, what makes it work for me are the compositions. It's a similar blend of post rock's bitterness and black metal's beauty, into a one-of-a-kind sound.
Not exactly music, but I've been listening to Liam Gallagher interviews. He sounds like a complete dick, but he's fun to hear. Kinda like John Lydon. Even when John got old, and turned out to be a sellout (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mSE-Iy_tFY), his interviews are always funny to watch.
3 years and some change.
I haven't changed much from what I usually listen to (r&b, rap, gospel, jazz), but I have added a bit of rock into the rotation along with lo-fi. I wish I had given lo-fi a shot way back when Samurai Champloo first aired. I could've used it to try and go to sleep to. And then it just calms me down.
Now in terms of new folks in the industry. I've listened to some of these younger and up and coming rap artists. Without trying to be too harsh on them, the talent is there. Some of these 19-25 year olds can actually rap-rap. It's just too much street/gang culture involved and you can see it's becoming stagnant. This "Drill" music is out of hand and it can't be supported or marketed. They only got YouTube reactors going for them which is cool but at the same time, sad, because these YouTubers are condoning the music unintentionally. Like I said, some of them can actually rap-rap, but Drill is literally, going out and killing "ops", which is what the younger generation is rapping about and actually doing. Unless they change it up, they're in a no win situation.
I've also tried listening to Drake for the first time. Still don't like his music. I'm not one of those that listen for "bars" and lyrics like some of your hip hop heads. I'm more of a cadence, flow, and substance kinda guy. Sure, if you can actually do schemes, double/triple entendres that's a plus, but flow first for me. That being said, J.Cole and Kendrick has been added to the playlist.
Anyway, anymore music heads still around?
Kendrick vs Drake
Just about everyone will tell you that we were witnessing history this past weekend when it comes to hip-hop. Personally, I'm not so sure. It could've been great had this whole concept of "receipts" not been brought into the picture. These idiotic fans made it no better because if any of what either is saying turns out to be true (Drake is a accused of being a pedo and Kendrick, a woman beater) could be career threatening (good riddance if true), but the fans were just egging it on. Luckily this didn't escalate as well, because of these allegations on both sides this could've turned left real quick.
That being said, I'm still not a fan of Drake and while I got Kendrick winning the overall battle, Drake did hold his own. I'll give him that. If this was kept within the music, meaning better bars, flow, making me have that stank face, etc, Kendrick no question.
One more thing I've noticed from the fans. They were treating this like Battle Rap, and that's a huge mistake. Battle Rap is a competition where people are paid (nowadays) to put on a show dissing the opponent. Beef is legitimate a back and forth between folks that don't like each other (and they clearly don't like each other). Nothings off limit in both, BUT things can escalate and turn left real quick with Beef. Tupac vs Biggie, 50 vs Ja/Game.
Was this battle needed? Not really, but it did get hip-hop a spark again. To me, neither be considered this generation GOAT, nor J.Cole. I'd probably give that title to someone like King Los or Cyhi the Prince, but both are past 40 so I can't call them this gen GOAT. Now if only we can get away from this Drill stuff.
