Title: Animation Revelation's Movie Talkback Thread Collection.
Post by: Lord Dalek on July 02, 2011, 10:39:22 AM
Thanks to the latest TZ redesign fucking up my house style, I'm going to be doing all my movie talkbacks from now on here at Animation Revelation! (and the peasants rejoiced) So in order to keep track of who is doing what (as I'm leaving this open for all to do talkbacks for other movies, hell they can be ones already at Toonzone like the one I just did), I give you this easy directory to find what has been done, and what has not been done. There are some really good and bad movies out there that I have no interest in doing whatsoever. That leaves the well pretty fresh.

And now...

Stickied it for ya.

Maybe I'll make a talkback or two of my own on here. Don't want to do any repeats, though.

If I do any repeats its going to be for classic movies that got lousy talkbacks by either Hanshotfirst or Wanker. They deserve better.

Sounds nice, especially if I'm interested in looking up a movie quickly.

Good idea to do a table of contents sort of post. I think that has inspired me to create a few talkback threads of my own. I think I'll do one for The Untouchables later on tonight, and since I finally got to see it recently, I'll also do one for One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest.

By request I've been asked to make a tutorial detailing how I make a talkback. Its pretty similar to The Penguin's method detailed in the TZ Talkback thread collection. The problem with that though is it was written back in the good ol days of 2002, when 1024x768 resolution was less of a standard and more of a luxury. This means that on a widescreen monitor, if you were to follow the Penguin's directions to the hilt, you'd end up with a talkback the size of a postage stamp.

Coming to this conclusion around 2006, I took those rules and basically reworked them for scratch choosing higher resolutions for my poster images to assist in viewing them. These are works of art, they deserve better than forcing you to pull out a magnifying glass to read them. Some say this is stodgy and conservative and that may be true. But I feel that it makes my tbs pleasing to my eye and I know others agree with me. Furthermore, elementfx does not work the same way as vbulletin so reposting that information would be both inaccurate and an exercise in futility.

But before I begin let me introduce you to an old "friend" of mine...

This is O.G "The Load" Wanker (http://www.toonzone.net/forums/member.php?31658-Old-Guy), a disgusting perversion of all that is good and beautiful in the universe who's crimes against humanity are too numerous to count. On top of several idiotic things he did was make lots and lots of talkbacks, all of which were incompetently done and enough of an eyesore that even a full bottle of clear eyes couldn't heal them. Case in point, this early "attempt" (http://www.toonzone.net/forums/showthread.php?216545-quot-Burn-After-Reading-quot-Talkback-%28Spoilers%29). Notice how there's very little to it: no poster image, no plot synopsis, and no editing of any discernible sort. It is if he copied and pasted a block of text from another site (Dark Horizons, ComingSoon, etc.) and left it at that. I could go further into all of Old Guy's errors and attrocities (such as posting a talkback for Quantum of Solace two weeks before the movie opened, which triggered the "Great Talkback War of 2009"), but I don't have the time. Lesson is... don't be like Old Guy. Put effort into what you're trying to do or else you may end up with a Demi Lovato fetish that's faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar creepier than the one Avaitor has.

And now back to the Tutorial.

STEP 1: Get a Photobucket account, or any other photo hosting site account if you don't have one already. This is a must if you want decent posters and I will explain why when we get there.

STEP 2: Know what movie you want to do a talkback for in advance. Remember to check the talkback thread collection post at the top of the Moving Pictures forum. Happily if you make a mistake you can delete your own thread, but you shouldn't have to. I'm pretty good at keeping up with everything at the moment.

STEP 3: Click "New Poll". NOT "New Topic". "New Poll"

STEP 4: Type your subject in the subject box. The standard format is as follows: "(insert film title here)" Talkback (Spoilers)

STEP 5: Type your poll question in the top typing prompt of Question Box. This can basically be whatever you want but I typically use Rate This Movie as mine.

STEP 6: Create the poll. Now my polls usually consist of 10 options to account for half stars so click the blue thing that says (Add Option) in the bottom left corner of the Question Box until you get to option 10. Don't worry if you over do this, elementfx will simply not post the ones that have nothing in them. Now to adding the stars. I usually go from a scale of ***** to ? *, that way the whole spectrum is covered.

STEP 7: Scroll down to the mainbox and type the movie's tagline, then hit return twice so there's a decent gap in between this and step 8. Now since many movies don't have a tagline this is optional and can be skipped. You can find the tagline usually on the poster.

STEP 8: Get the poster. Now for years I've used the Internet Movie Poster Awards (www.impawards.com) as my main resource. The problem with that is the site does not allow image hotlinking so this is why you'll a photo hosting site account. So use the search prompt at IMPawards to find the movie you want to do, my preference is for posters with a resolution of 489x755 with full cast and rating information. Now ocassionally the site does not have that available so you might have to look on Google. Once you have your poster, right click on it and select Copy Image Location. This will copy the URL of the poster onto your computer's clipboard. Now go to your photo hosting site account and click whatever version of upload from url they may have. Now simply right click/paste or ctrl+V the information into the prompt and click upload. You should now have the poster available to use.

STEP 9: Add the poster to your talkback. Your image hosting site should give you the option of posting an image with [IMG]http://tags. If it does just simply copy and paste. If it doesn't, then copy the image url directly using the same method I described to get the poster from IMPawards and use the img tag function.

In the end it should something like this...

TAGLINE

(img)imgURL(/img)

OPTIONAL STEP: Many movies have a cool quote that's played in the trailer. I occastonally put these under the poster like so..

TAGLINE

(img)imgURL(/img)

QUOTE

Again this is optional.

STEP 10: Highlight all of this and click the center format button (seventh from the left in the top row).

Everything should look like this

(center)TAGLINE

(img)imgURL(/img)

QUOTE (/center) except with these brackets [ ] instead of the ( ). Now hit enter twice.

Step 11: Type the following exactly as it appears:

Release Date:
Studio:
Director:
Starring:

Plot Summary:

Now I also add an extra one for Aspect Ratio in between Director and Starring. I don't expect you to know what an aspect ratio is so this is purely optional.

Step 12: Bold each line INDIVIDUALLY. You only want the subject headers bolded not the contents.

It should look something like this, again with [ ] in place of ( ).

(b)Release Date:(/b)
(b)Studio:(/b)
(b)Director:(/b)
(b)Starring:(/b)

(b)Plot Summary:(/b)

Step 13: Add information into each prompt. There are several ways of doing this. From looking stuff up on IMDB to just simply looking at the movie poster. For a Plot Summary, I usually look for one at IMDB or Coming-soon. If you do get one from Coming-soon though you'll have to clean it up because Coming-soon adds their own tags to people who try to C&P from them. When finished hit enter twice.

Step 14:  Type COMMENTS? And bold it.

Your talkback should now look like this.

(center)TAGLINE

(img)imgURL(/img)

QUOTE (/center)

(b)Release Date:(/b) x/x/xxxx
(b)Studio:(/b) Studio Name
(b)Director:(/b) Director Name
(b)Starring:(/b) Cast

(b)Plot Summary:(/b) Synopsis

(b)COMMENTS?(/b)

Except with [ and ] instead of ( and ).

If you're not sure about it you can click the preview button next to post and then go back and make adjustments but it should be ok.

Good luck!

Ok... after a lengthy and exhaustive process I have completely rebuilt and updated the thread collection. All the links are working again and the movies I never got around to adding are in as well. Enjoy!
