Title: 5 Greatest Artists/Bands/Performers/Singers/Guitarists (Etc) from Each Decade?
Post by: No-Personality on January 26, 2013, 04:19:02 PM
Decided to start this after seeing the really fascinating "Best Songwriter of the 60s" feud going on in the Unpopular Opinions thread.

I'd love to hear your input. What artists, bands, singers, guitarists, songwriters made each decade what that decade was at its' core in your opinion? (Try to limit your absolute best to around 5, with honorary mentions if you feel your list is packed too hard.

I'm not really qualified to post in this thread because outside of a few things (like Zappa, Parliament, etc.), most of the stuff I listen to influences nothing and could not really be considered "important", but...

I just wanted to pop in and say that I absolutely despise Weezer. :happytime:

Well wait, what are we talking about here, Blue Album-Maladroit Weezer or Make Believe-now Weezer?

I mean, I like it all(at least most of it all), but I can understand if you hate them after listening to Beverly Hills or something.

I'm fine with their first three albums, and actually kind of like the first two. Everything after that I have trouble tolerating, though.

That's pretty fine. Actually, only the first 2 albums were released in the 90's, so don't you think Dalek gets a pass? ;)

I honestly think Hurley's the best album they made. The first one's okay, but I've never gotten why people enjoy Pinkerton so much.

Raditude is the worst one though.

Hurley was released in 2010, right?

Add "Blitzgiving" to the fold, and that was the year of Jorge Garcia.

Yeah. I honestly thought it was a pleasant surprise, after the red album and Raditude. Death To False Metal came out a few months after Hurley, but I don't think much of that one either. I just think Hurley had a higher amount of memorable songs than their other albums.

I've yet to hear all of Make Believe and Maladroit though. I do like "We Are All On Drugs", but I've never heard the rest.

Most people tend to like the first three albums and are pretty indifferent to the rest, but I'm one of the weird ones who just really really likes Maladroit.  It's my second favorite of theirs, right behind Blue.  Pinkerton is alright, but I do think it's rather overrated.

Like I said, I still do like what they put out, but out of Make Believe, Red Album, Raditude, and Hurley I don't think I like any of them more than 3/4's of the way through, even half of the way through on a couple of them.  Weezer's a weird ass band, they can't seem to go for consistency.

I think Weezer's kind of become a singles band as of late. Most of my favorite tracks beyond the first 2 albums have been their singles. "We Are All On Drugs", "Island in the Sun", "Pork and Beans", "Dope Nose", etc.

Not counting bonus tracks, I still think half the songs on Hurley are shit/filler. It just has the most amount of songs I like from a single Weezer album, so I hope I don't sound like I'm championing it as some musical peak.

Weezer's just one of those bands where I tend to only really enjoy 2-3 songs from each album. I think Avaitor's got it right on the singles thing.

Subject to change, but...

90's (Wildly inconsistent but far from suck, just the fact that I felt a 300 singles list adequately fit the 1980's but I couldn't possibly rope the 90's in under 500 proves that - in my opinion, of course)
1. Bjork
2. Beck
3. The Smashing Pumpkins
4. Imperial Teen
5. Bis

The New Millennium (Warning: I'm not that up on this decade, or the one-in progress-after that, so I'm throwing both together)
1. Goldfrapp
2. Rihanna
3. Gorillaz
4. Roisin Murphy
5. Kanye West

The 90's is hard for me to rank, since a lot of the acts I enjoy from then only released one or two albums during the decade, which kind of feels like cheating to add up amongst more loaded discographies.

I can only think of two acts from then that have a few albums I quite enjoy across the decade, so I'm going to have to come back to this.

60s
Beach Boys
The Kinks
CCR
Bob Dylan
The Temptations

70s
The Ramones
David Bowie
The New York Dolls
Thin Lizzy
The Jam

80s
The Replacements
Stray Cats
Fishbone
Run DMC
Megadeth

90s
umm... I'll explain that.

Oh wow, I was not expecting someone to list this.

Also, Clarity by Jimmy Eat World is one of the best albums of the 90s. Goodbye Sky Harbor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dH3PoJ4VIUI) is probably my favorite song of the decade. 16 minutes of goodness. Shame it was co-opted by a terrible genre.

To be honest though, with the 90s it was more about standalone albums than bodies of work. I don't think I listened to any artist that was high quality throughout.

Well, if I had to try this for the 90's, I'd go with:

1- Death
2- Burzum
3- Alice in Chains
4- Megadeth
5- R.E.M.

Death were the first band that came to mind in the 90's. While Spiritual Healing is their weakest album (it only just came back into print in the US for a reason), every album from then on is a massive improvement and progression from the last, in a very well-mannered, intelligent way that more artists don't seem to take their music into any more. It's a damn shame.

Burzum is... well, it's Varg. The guy is nuts, but he's easily one of the 90's strongest musical geniuses. Besides his work in his own band, which is more than enough to rank him here, he was also responsible for Mayhem and Darkthrone's best albums, which also deserve mention.

And the last three is where it gets difficult and controversial.

AIC loses points for self-titled, but man, I never tire of Dirt or Jar of Flies. Facelift and Sap still get decent play from me as well.

Megadeth did become more commercial and a little less fun with each passing album, but they started the decade out with Rust in Peace. That's a hell of a way to start things up, and while each successive album has less songs that I fancy, up until we get to the shitfest of Risk, I just like seeing Dave have a consistent band for once, and they did last throughout most of the decade. A lot of their best stuff comes from this period as well, such as "A Tout Le Monde", "Trust", and "High Speed Dirt".

And I lose interest in R.E.M. after Monster (in hindsight, their last album isn't so bad, though), but those first 3 albums of the decade are enough to put them on here.

Post by: Spark Of Spirit on February 04, 2013, 06:11:33 PM
Yeah, I wouldn't argue with any of them. There was a lot of good music in the 90s but I don't think any one artist had a ton of consistency through it. The Brian Setzer Orchestra kind of did, but they have a lot of covers so that's sort of cheating. Even Fishbone started out strong with Reality then fell off the planet by the end of the decade. Even one of my favorite albums from the decade, Tripping Daisy's Jesus Hits Like The Atom Bomb (no, it's not a Gospel/Christian album) was hurt by the fact their prior albums were generic and their last album came out in 2000 after the guitarist died.

I'm also not that big on Pinkerton outside of the obvious songs, I prefer the Red Album and many of the songs that have leaked out from the post-Pinkerton 90s era more.

As for the last decade, this was probably my favorite:

(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fcps-static.rovicorp.com%2F3%2FJPG_250%2FMI0002%2F415%2FMI0002415137.jpg%3Fpartner%3Dallrovi.com&hash=c3df0e995f52ea0487f4676c07f09c01f921cef0)

It leans more on Rockabilly and Jazz than Big Band, but it works for the noir atmosphere and every song is excellent. I can't bring myself to skip any of the tracks either, as a whole this is one of his best works.

This is gonna be tough

00's/10's:

1- The Mountain Goats
2- The Kills
3- Agalloch
4- Opeth
5- Silversun Pickups

Each act here have displayed a wide variety and extreme virtuosity and merit over their frequent contributions in the past 13 years. This can change at any time, but I think this is fine.

Going off what I said before, Brian Setzer was probably my favorite act of the previous decade to now. He had a fantastic solo album that was his best since his second solo album in the 80s (and it was better than that one), a Classical meets Big Band album, an incredible instrumental album, a lovely tribute to Sun Records, and the one I posted about one post before. He also had a fantastic live album with the Stray Cats and an excellent double live album with the Orchestra.

As far as old school acts go, I think he's doing the best by far.

Let me try the 80's barring Maiden

1- Prince
2- Tom Petty
3- INXS
4- The Cult
5- Dead Kennedys
6- Queensryche

What a great decade. I always think that Damn the Torpedos is an 80's album for some reason. If it was, that might edge him up to the top.

00's:
Got bored? I've finally started working on my Top 100 Singles of the Aughts. As in...about a month ago. Whenever I do this, I usually rush over to MUBI and post it as a list but... right now, I think I've realized that my heart isn't in this decade. I mean, I never really go into why I think some of these songs are so great. Not only that but I really didn't pay attention to the past 13 years in popular music. I can't name even one song by - though nobody ever cared or really paid much attention to them except to mock 'em, still - My Chemical Romance. Even though they were one of the biggest bands for about 18 months. I did somehow pick up on The White Stripes, enough to at least have heard "Seven Nation Army," "Hardest Button," and "Fell in Love with a Girl" and of course since my last year in high school was 2002 (I didn't graduate but I stayed 4 years nonetheless), I caught a few of the Gorillaz tracks. Even though I've been on the internet all ten years of the last decade and was still a teenager for 3 years out of the 00's... I really did tune out of popular culture entirely when Dubya was elected- even though, ironically, I didn't know shit about politics it seemed that was almost really spooky timing like it was fated. What I did instead was practically live on message boards which broadcast articles and news about new DVD releases. My attention turned entirely to, ya know, when were Friday the 13th fans finally gonna get those uncut DVD's? And why we never did. Which was actually something that translated into MONTHS worth of speculation before the 2004 boxset came out. Just so you get an idea that it was possible for me to not be paying attention to Mtv or wherever people were getting their information about what was going on in music. Every now and then, I tuned in to find out Gwen Stefani was going solo. And I got the album. That year.

Anyway, I've made my Top 100 now. But to do so, I had to actually go snooping around other lists online. Which required me to download a lot of songs I'd never heard before. (If I don't download them, I can't organize them into an easy list on my music player- right now, I'm using J River Media Jukebox 14.) And until I get to the 30's or so, I don't feel passionate about the order. I feel it's pretty much what I'd do if I'd had months of my life to get used to the songs individually but... here it is (as usual, it's ARTIST and THEN the song title in "quotes") (no YouTube links...I'm too lazy, it really takes forever to do that):

As you can probably see, I changed my previous Top 10. After hearing "Frontier Psychiatrist" again, I realize I think it's the best song of the decade. I think most people wouldn't list it because it's kind-of a joke if you try and take it seriously. But then... that's shockingy the Aughts in a nutshell. A big joke. And most of what came out makes you want to rush to the retro stuff.

Also, there's no question Goldfrapp were the best thing in music of the decade. In my - anything but - humble opinion.

* means I've never heard the song in full before putting the list together.

That Gwen Stefani song at 21 is her only solo song that I dig.

Not a bad list! There's some stuff here that I really like, but I feel like I was on another wavelength during the decade.

(Thanks.) I assume that anyone else was paying more attention than I was.

Although, out of curiosity, what wavelength were you on? I'd love some suggestions / recommendations. My list is anything but set-in-stone yet.

You know me. My quota consists of about 90% heavy stuff, with the rest going into jazz and some indie and pop. I can't think of too much to really recommend you, since we're pretty different musically.

Well, I guess I don't know you that well. I mean, I had plenty of "hard" music in my 90's list. I just don't know of the "harder" bands of the last decade and change.

My list was only lacking of "heavy" material I've never heard. It's not lacking because I didn't think it was any good.

Hmm, I think I might send you a PM later. I want to set up a list for you, and need time to figure out the right songs.

In the mean time, I'll check out some of what I've missed here.

Top of the 10's... It's a little early to call it but early enough to make a list that you change a lot (which is fun).

Could change at any time:
1. "All of the Lights"
2. "Somebody That I Used to Know"
3. "Alive (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5UN6k1NG_4)"
4. "S&M"
5. "Telephone"

Also... I'm doing that Top Singles of the 1990's list again. I've got my list of over 1,700 songs and I'm working on that right now. It'll probably take me a couple weeks but the final list will probably be something like 999 (as a gimmick). I might post it here since I'll die before I ever do this again- the amount of discography scouring I had to do was beyond insane. I practically spent all day Tuesday and Wednesday with war paint on chugging through every person on my list and then I just tossed the last 6 or 7 people away (they were: Kylie Minogue, KMFDM, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, Vanessa Williams, Des'ree, and Vanilla Ice). Because I was pulling my hair in "haven't slept in days" insanity. So, aside from that, and that I kinda flat-out ignored most metal and country artists, I'll be pretty happy with the final product. Plus, I can always go back and look them up. Along with Metallica, EMF, The Donnas, and Black Box, all of whom I realized today that I forgot. Until the list is stone-set. Because then, that's my Tombstone-writer. I'm so proud of just being done with my humongous list. Of about 4 dozen artists I wasn't very familiar with - Disco Inferno? Ride? Black Sheep? Primal Scream? Boards of Canada? Actually never heard them before a few days ago.

This is gonna be tough

00's/10's:

1- The Mountain Goats
2- The Kills
3- Agalloch
4- Opeth
5- Silversun Pickups

Each act here have displayed a wide variety and extreme virtuosity and merit over their frequent contributions in the past 13 years. This can change at any time, but I think this is fine.
I wanted to put Ghost somewhere on here, but honestly, I still stand by this list. All I might do is switch #2 and 3 around.

The Mountain Goats have elevated far beyond any other hipster act out there and have truly become one of the most distinctive folk acts in history. John Darnielle was a strong contender to be our poet laureate for a reason.

Agalloch use samples in a way unlike any other non-rap artist out there. From using Bergman soundbites to the tapping of a skull, they rarely ever mess up in the mixing. Not to mention that their music is constantly a depressing side of perfect.

I know some semi-hispterish guy who can't stand The Kills. Nuts to him. They're the best at what they do, by far. The closest thing to the Stones we've got since the Stones started turning to crap, and Alison has one of the most unique voices out there.

Opeth have basically transcended genre at this point. Besides every type of metal imaginable, they've also been able to pull off jazz, folk, but American and traditional Scandinavian, basic hard rock and even hints of R&B. They have very few duds in a surprisingly large discography.

SSPU have become an act who have pretty much surpassed all of their influences, from the Pumpkins to MBV. It's amazing to go back to their minimalist sounds in Pikul to how big and angry they sound in their newest album. One more LP on that level, and they'll definitely have a spot in the rock greats.

As for Ghost, they're more than just a novelty act. Those 2 albums are close to perfect, for metal fans and beyond.

Not to disagree with your words but, New York Dolls, Flamin' Groovies, and several other bands have been doing it better than the Stones since Sticky Fingers.

Welll, I like the Stones up to Some Girls, so I'm biased there.

Also, I'd argue that NYD were so good at doing their own thing that they don't really qualify. Cause they did.

You need a listen to Teenage Head, son.  O0

Supersnazz and Flamingo are excellent, too.
