Title: The Greatest Live-Action Movie Ever (Nomination Thread)
Post by: LumRanmaYasha on March 06, 2015, 11:01:03 AM
All right, ALL RIGHT, enough is enough! It's time for AR to finally do a Greatest Live-Action Movie competition. I was thinking about doing another Protagonist tournament or something else first, but no, fuck it, let's just do this one already.

All non-animated movies qualify for this competition. To qualify as a film it has to be at least over an hour in length and generally recognized as a film by most people. Each participant is limited to 16 nominations each. The minimum amount of nominations needed to begin this competition is 64 entries, and the maximum is 128. The maximum limit will not be lifted unless more than 8 people wish to participate, at which point the limit will be raised as seen fit to. The nomination period will last until midnight on March 13th.

That's all I really have to say, so here are my nominations:

Citizen Kane
Casablanca
Black Dynamite
Django Unchained
12 Angry Men
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?
Rashomon
The Seven Samurai
Dr. Strangelove (or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb)
Dial M for Murder
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
The World's End
Clerks
Monthy Python and the Holy Grail
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl An American Werewolf in London

I hope you weren't deterred from doing the anime music competition by what I said. I was only half serious  ...but I will definitely do it after I finish the video game music tourney, like I planned.

Nah, I wasn't planning to do consecutive music tournaments in the first place.  ;) I'm also just kind of tired of running anime/manga related competitions, so I probably won't do one of those again for a bit.

EK, you keep on nominating the past winners of this tournament. :P

Double Indemnity
The Lost Weekend
Sunset Boulevard
Stalag 17
Love in the Afternoon
Some Like It Hot
The Apartment
One, Two, Three

This time, I hope I can just get someone on here to watch a Billy Wilder movie already, though.

I like it more. But if the limit gets raised I'll probably nominate them.

I'm personally confused as to why I had to be the one to nominate Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Yeah, it's John Carpenter's greatest work. ;)

I'm glad Homura nominated Casino Royale. I decided on Goldeneye beforehand since I only wanted to pick one Campbell Bond but now this is perfect. ;D

Goldeneye
Total Recall (1990?)
The Maxtrix (I don't care if I'm the only fan of this film on the site :bleh:)

That is a billion times better than I suspect some here think of it. :D It was my absolute favorite movie years ago but that cooled down. I still haven't seen it in its entirety in years but what I did see last year actually gave me a new appreciation for it. Back then, I loved it just for the action. :D

Title: Re: The Greatest Live-Action Movie Ever (Nomination Thread)
Post by: Dr. Ensatsu-ken on March 06, 2015, 09:44:54 PM
I was always kind of lukewarm to The Matrix. When I saw it as a kid I was impressed by the action but didn't understand the story. Now, I find the story to be pretentious, but in a sort of goofy and entertaining way, so I still enjoy the film, even if for unintentional reasons (sort of like how Batman Returns is a guilty pleasure for me).

At any rate, don't mind people not liking a movie that you do. I feel that films like Forrest Gump and Dances With Wolves are legitimately great movies, but modern day film snubs love to shit on them because they won Oscars over what they feel were better movies, and then proceed to find reasons to call them terrible films. I just stopped giving a fuck about those opinions, myself.

Anyways, I notice that nobody nominated Ip Man. I'd replace KFH with it if it weren't for the fact that I feel that this competition really needs its comedy film representatives.

Also, speaking of Dancing With The Wolves, I like The Last Samurai and don't give a shit what anyone says about it. :bleh:

Post by: Dr. Ensatsu-ken on March 06, 2015, 10:48:46 PM
The last Samurai is one of my favorite movies.

People will bash it like Avatar just because the story is unoriginal, but for me it's all in the execution. Unlike Avatar, the characters here are fully fleshed out and 3-dimensional, and the actors aren't just phoning in their performances.

Post by: gunswordfist on March 06, 2015, 11:04:19 PM
Sweet. It's probably my 2nd favorite Cruise film. I remember Avatar being called a Dancing With The Wolves ripoff now. :D I still have not seen it.

Anyway, criticizing movies for being similar is silly. What's next? Saying Akira Kurosawa movies sucks because he "ripped off" Westerns?

So....does that mean that the deadline was two months ago, or are you saying that we have to wait until next year to start the voting part of this tournament? Or did you just somehow type January when you meant to write March? :sly:

On another note, I count us at 108 nominations, excluding Avaitor's nominations since he abstained. So that leaves us 20 short of thr full limit. Pharass still has 4 votes left, though, and if Lord Il should decide to participate, that will even the total out to its maximum capacity, I believe.

If Avaitor hadn't decided to pull his nominations, I would have seen it fit to raise the max limit of nominations for the competition and allowed people to make additional nominations as well. However, as it stands, I see no reason to. Pharass has 4 nominations he has left to make and Vlord has 15, and that will fill us to 128. I will not start this competition before the 13th no matter what, but if they don't add in enough nominations before the 12th, I will allow other members to make more nominations on a first come, first serve basis until the limit of 128 is reached. However, if any other forum members who have yet to nominate anything decide to do so, such as previous competition participants like Dr. Insomniac, Rynnec, ShadowGentleman, Inkwolf, Lord Il, and talonmalon333, I will do what I would have done if Avaitor had not retracted his votes and raise the max limit for nominations and how many nominations one person can make.

While I can't deny others the right to nominate if they haven't already done so, I kind of hope that the list doesn't get too long. While there are tons of great movies (and believe me, I've had to make tough decisions in leaving off some of my favorites), I feel that these games are more interesting with just the right amount of nominations involved. Just look at The Greatest Villain tournament. It's super interesting now that it has boiled down to the "worst of the worst," but honestly the first 2 rounds weren't that interesting for me since just about any half-way decent villain was on the list. Forcing a limit on these kinds of tournaments forces each of us to pick and choose the films that we feel the most passionate about, and thus the competition is all the stronger and more interesting for it.

Of course, don't misunderstand me. I'm not suggesting anything, here. Should others choose to nominate, they deserve to have their input taken into account just as much as anyone. I'm simply stating my opinion that these kinds of games are more fun when we already start off with the best of the best, as opposed to taking a few rounds to get to that point.

I actually liked the Greatest Villains the most at the beginning. It was nice seeing all those different villains, a lot of them were among my favorites. Now the list is more like what you expect to see at any site where people like villains from multiple forms of medium.
Title: Re: The Greatest Live-Action Movie Ever (Nomination Thread)
Post by: Dr. Ensatsu-ken on March 07, 2015, 08:52:04 PM
How many sites pit villains like Tywin Lannister against villains from a completely different medium and culture like Meruem? Simply having more villains isn't more interesting, IMO, because you'll have clear, easy answers as to who you think is better in a given round. When there's less to choose from, your choices become much tougher as your favorites go head to head, and that to me is more interesting.

Videodrome
The fact that someone brought that '80s title up which many (at least that I've spoken to about it) haven't heard of.. I'm almost in awe. That movie freaked the hell out of me. O_o David Cronenberg's movies are disturbing as they are brilliant. Highly doubtful it would make it far in the competition, but it's a fun nomination to have.

I can't really add too much more (in case I can). But I would like to entertain Labyrinth as another nomination. Such a fun movie when I was a kid and equally as enjoyable today.

And since talking about Cronenberg, how about The Fly remake he made as well. Creepy and very memorable, Jeff Goldblum's performance was fantastic.

Maybe, idk.

I've heard of Videodrome, I just haven't gotten around to seeing it yet. I thought it was a pretty well-known 80's film thanks to a strong cult-following built over time, much like movies such as Return of the Living Dead, Night of the Creeps, and They Live.

Also, I love Cronenberg's remake of The Fly. I even ranked it as one of my favorite Sci-Fi movies of all time on an earlier list that I made.

I thought the same as well and I still do believe that to be correct. It's just weird when I bring it up to people and they look at me like I have two heads because they've never heard of it. :e_confused:

With Avaitor's picks, we have now reached the original maximum of 128 entries. In light of other forum members who are still capable of nominating material or those who may still want to add something in while they still can, I will raise the maximum limit of nominations to 160. In addition, I will now allow everyone to potentially nominate up to 20 films total. These will be the only extensions. Once 160 nominations have been reached, this thread will be closed.

Rear Window
The Host
They Live
To Kill A Mockingbird

Just to avoid confusion with any other films that may share that name, I'm talking about the 2006 Korean film with "The Host." At first I was going to nominate Ip Man, but we already have a solid representation of martial arts films in this competition thanks to GSF, whereas we could always use another monster movie for some variety, IMO.

Ip Man
Robocop
Starship Troopers

Edit: Thinking about making my last pick Rush Hour, Saving Private Ryan or Halloween.

While I enjoy Rush Hour, I doubt that it'll make it past the first round because....well, Bret Ratner.

The other two have a chance, though.

Also, speaking of John Carpenter films, have you seen "They Live" yet, GSF?

I have. Probably in my top 10 for scifi movies but not one of my favorite favorites. I'd nominate Escape From New York before it.

It's my second favorite Carpenter film, personally. After that is Big Trouble In Little China, then Escape From New York, then Halloween. I love them all, though.

In fact, screw it, I'm switching from Argo to They Live. That film is great, but JC films are so underrated outside of the core cult fanbase, so I want this one to get some more exposure.

Fuck it, I nominate Rush Hour. :bleh: I don't care if people hate on him for no good reason. :bleh: He directed Rush Hour 1, 2 and Prison Break. That's better than anything 99% of American directors have done in the last 17 years.

I wouldn't go that far, but I will say that I liked the first 2 Rush Hour movies, and I don't mind Chris Tucker that much in them. They are fun movies for what they are, though I'd say that Police Story is a better comedy and action movie than any Rush Hour film.
Title: Re: The Greatest Live-Action Movie Ever (Nomination Thread)

I think Rush Hour is funnier (from what I remember) but Police story is of course the better action movie.

I think that some of the humor is dated, but it mostly holds up. I just love Police Story's blend of slapstick and situational humor, though. That court scene where Chan plays that misleading but suggestive recording of Selina (which she tampered with) at the trial (with his girlfriend in attendance) had me laughing so hard.
