Anyone saw the premiere episode for "Gravity Falls"? It's on iTunes for free if you haven't.
Anyway, I watched it and it's actually pretty fun. The style and humor is something you'd find in the best Cartoon Network shows (reminiscent of "Flapjack", which the show's creator worked on). In fact, it reminded me of "Regular Show".
I also thought the animation's good, too.
I think I'll check this show out. Hope it has a good run.
I saw it. It definitely stood out from the usual Disney fare of late. I enjoyed it more than Fish Hooks, but that wouldn't take much.
I did like how for once we got an animated series that focuses on humans, not talking animals or things. I also like how this show turned the stereotypical gender roles upside down for the main characters with the boy being sensible and the girl being silly instead of the reverse which is far more common. Also, like Phineas & Ferb, Gravity Falls takes place during a perpetual summer vacation, so it wont get bogged down with any generic school plots or stories. Another plus.
Regarding the main characters, Mabel was cute, I can't imagine why anyone would name give their daughter that name though. I recognized her voice actress (comedienne Kristen Schaal) right away, and she had some good lines in the episode. Dipper was kind of dull, but that's mainly because he was forced into the thankless role of being the straight kid. Also, I didn't like his voice. He sounded like a 30-year-old man.
I think that the monster/oddity/freak-of-the-week premise might get old after a while, but Gravity Falls offers a nice alternative to more P&F reruns.
Just looked at the credits and noticed that Rob Renzetti's working on the show as a supervising producer.
At least we now know where he went after he quit "My Little Pony".
Okay, everyone needs to watch this show right now. It's, quite frankly, the best thing airing on Disney Channel right now. The latest episode even had Thurop Van Orman voicing a psycho child who can read minds, apparently.
I've heard a bit about it, and seen some of the animation from gifs posted online. Don't know if I'm ready to watch DC though.
And of course there's my personal track record with shows that people tell me I simply must watch. I'll probably give it shot I guess.
I've seen a couple of git sets of the show. It looks okay. Better than P&F, but that really isn't saying much.
I'll get to it eventually.
One of the things that kinda turned me off is that apparently the guy who created it was one of the head writers on Fish Hooks. And that show blows.
I dunno, I'll probably get around to it at some point, but my faith in Disney animation (as far as the TV side of things go) is all but non-existent anymore. I tried - believe me, I tried - to make Phineas & Ferb work, and the time I wasted on that show... I'll never get it back.
Trust me, this show is nothing like "Fish Hooks". In fact it hardly resembles a Disney Channel show, it's something you'd normally see on Cartoon Network (alot of people compared this show to "Regular Show")
Not to mention, Jerry Beck gave it a positive review when it came out (http://www.cartoonbrew.com/disney/gravity-falls-sneak-peek-tonight.html), which says ALOT.
At least watch the pilot. I think it's still free on iTunes.

A couple of people have compared
Gravity Falls to
Regular Show, but I don't see it much, myself. RS is more like
Rocko's Modern Life meets
Clerks: TAS and
Megas XLR. To me,
Gravity Falls is more reminiscent of the late NBC show
Eerie, Indiana, only in cartoon form.

Fish Hooks shouldn't be a barometer for anything. The show is pure wasted talent.
I watched an episode and I will say that I loved what I enjoyed. It was that episode with the Wax figures coming to life and trying to kill Grunkle. I will say that does feel like something I would see on CN or Nick more. In fact, feels like one of those shows I would see on an international CN that didn't air on CN proper.
Okay, I just watched a couple episodes. I'm surprised this came out of Disney. There are plenty of moments where I just go, "Uh, what?" It feels like they're being lenient on it just so they can create their own Adventure Time. But that doesn't mean it's bad. Not at all.
And of course, "Now who wants to put on some blindfolds and get into my car?!" hasn't escaped notice.
I downloaded an HD copy of the pilot while it's free. I thought it was cute, even if I didn't get too many big laughs from it. It seems like it has potential, even if it can run thin before long.
I'll have to keep an eye out for it to give it more of a shot. I laughed more during this one episode than I did with all of the P&F I saw put together, so it does seem like a step up.
I watched the pilot too, and while I more or less agree with you, I am annoyed because just like a lot of other popular shows out right now, it panders to the internet. Specifically when the gnome is barfing a rainbow, it's incredibly pandering, and it's something that only the internet would find funny. Making the scene repeat endlessly over the credits made it worse.
This trend in today's cartoons is something I'm rather sick of.
I pretty much agree. The internet is just not funny.
I also thought the show was decent. I'll have to see how it holds up as it goes along.
Yeah, that's very much true. It does pander a bit, but I do feel like there's more heart to the show than in Adventure Time or Regular Show, other series with major pandering issues, if only with the family dynamic. I'll have to watch more to see where it goes with that aspect.
Another fault I have is with the voice acting. Jason Ritter sounds too old to play Dipper, and Kristen Schaal's voice gets on my nerves very easily. She's way more prominent here than she is in Bob's Burgers or 30 Rock, which is going to be a killer for me.
Have to disagree. Mabel is probably my favorite character in this show. She's just adorable.
Oh, I like Mabel. She is adorable. I just don't like her actress.
What don't you like about her? The fact that she's a horse? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lvd6MBsiDBo)
A few episodes in, and the show has been getting better.
The pandering's also been cut back a little since the pilot, too. It's no MLP in that regard.
edit: Err, the coffee scene at the end of episode 3 proves me wrong. But still, not as bad as My Little Pony.
Honestly, I don't have enough good things to say about this show. This is probably the most I've enjoyed a new cartoon in years. Even in its infancy, before I grew disillusioned with it to the point of really not caring anymore (thanks largely in part to the fanbase), I never liked FiM this much.
Everything about it just works. The writing, the characters (HOW CAN ANY OF YOU POSSIBLY NOT LIKE MABEL SHE IS ADORABLE), the animation style, the charming mix of comedy and mystery working hand in hand so well together... it's just great. I'm sorry I ever doubted it.
If I can find more episodes of this show (or watch it at a decent time) I was thinking of doing a review. From all I've seen this show deserves one.
I really liked Lil Gideon and his dad (played by Thurop Van Orman and Stephen Root who were both hilarious and had some great lines) who were great character additions, but the core of the episode was very lacking. I mean, it was pretty stock sitcom outside of the psychic stuff and the new characters (which were the highlight of the episode) and really could have been done by any show. That said, the show is starting to come into its own and I hope it's able to keep it up.
I also really like the opening theme and animation.
Well, I just watched the clone episode and it pretty much went against all my worries in the review. More episodes like this one, and the show should be just fine!
When 4 came out of the machine... man that was creepy.
That's the new episode that's been leaked, right?
I've been trying my hardest to save it for Friday, but it's tough though, especially when you've got nearly everyone unanimously calling it the best episode of the series thus far.
I completely forget to watch things all the time, so I went ahead and watched it ahead of time.
At this point, you should just wait for it to air.
Just watched and holy moly was this great. All the characters shined, Dipper and the clones (the paper jam clone was PERFECT), Mabel's dance off, a little bit about Wendy's childhood, Soos DJ'ing....
Am I the only one who was reminded of Twilight Sparkle when Dipper was freaking out over the list? Like, when Mabel tells Dipper to talk to Wendy like a normal person, imagine Mabel as Spike and Dipper as Twilight.
It should be noted that this episode was co-written by M.A. Larson, one of the more prominent writers for "My Little Pony".
Okay, latest episode in the books... and I do actually have a complaint; small one, but it's something nonetheless. One thing that I'm really hoping that isn't going to be a recurring trend in this series is the presence of Pacifica Northwest. IMO she just might be the first real weak link thus far (which is pretty damn good though, considering it took 7-8 episodes for that to happen). I absolutely hate the prototypical stock "bully" character that only exists for the sake of making life miserable for one of the protagonists (in this case, Mabel), and has virtually no personality otherwise. While I suppose she was useful as a plot device to further things along in this particular episode, which ultimately lead to some great moments, I really hope she's not going to a regular fixture on this cast. As far as established villains go, Gideon is a far more interesting character.
Still, a really fun episode otherwise. I love how they've struck such a good balance between the comedy and adventure/mystery-solving portions of the series, and the formula really worked well in this one. And of course, the writing is top notch once again. "I'm legalizing EVERYTHING!" :awesome:
I saw "Irrational Treasure" last night, and I have to say that this was the best episode of Gravity Falls to date. It's early in the shows' run, but I generally prefer the episodes where the twins work together to the ones where there are 2 separate story lines running simultaneously. However, I likewise hope that this doesn't mean that we'll be seeing more of Pacifica Northwest. One-dimensional bully characters typically rub me the wrong way, especially when they exist solely for the purpose of being an antagonist to one of the main characters, despite their having no reason to actually hate them. I loved it when Mabel decided not to humiliate Pacifica, so Dipper did it for her.
Also, is it just me, or did Uncle Stan pay homage to Dan VS in one scene?
I liked that Sheriff Blubs and Deputy Durland actually played an important role in yesterday's episode. They're useless characters otherwise, a one-dimensional "police are useless" characters, so it was nice to have them do something for once.
And yeah, I'm glad Dipper humiliated Pacifica after Mabel decided not to. I'm surprised, though, that she just didn't rip the documents up. Maybe it's going to play an important role in a later episode.
OK, here's something I noticed in the second episode (The Gobblewonkers). Look at the ad in the back of the tabloid Dipper is reading:
Yes, that's Lil' Gideon, who made a full-fledged appearance two episodes later.
There will be a Gravity Falls marathon next week at 6pm EST, so if you guys are eager to catch up and have a Friday free; here's your chance.
Now I can finally see more of the show.
I enjoyed last night's episode considerably more than I thought I would. The twins constant time skipping was funny, and now we know the name of guy from the future who's been seen in the background for some earlier episodes, Blendin (I get it!).
My only gripe is a fairly minor one; I wish that the shows' writers would just drop the whole "Dipper tries and fails to get anywhere with Wendy" routine. I've never been a fan of characters who continually fail to impress a crush that they have zero chance of actually getting anywhere with. I'm hoping that Dipper's next motivation for doing something with have nothing whatsoever to do with Wendy. Also, I'd really, really like to see the last of Pacifica Northwest. She's such a generic fill-in-the-blank antagonist with no motivation to make the protagonist (in this case, Mabel) miserable other than she just can.
Yeah, Pacifica sucks. She barely serves as anything more than a plot device, and a really bad one at that. Not only is she a totally unlikeable bitch, but she's so uninteresting. I don't really like Robbie either, as he serves basically the same purpose (but for Dipper instead of Mabel), but at least he has had some rather amusing moments and decent one-liners. Three episodes in, and I've never even been slightly amused by anything Pacifica has said or done; she's just "there". She's a really lame character, and I hope they cut down on her presence in the future.
...that aside though, last night's episode was fantastic once again. You know, the more I watch this, the more I just think "how can anyone NOT like Stan?". He has some of the best lines; "take these fake safety inspection certificates, and slap them on anything that looks like a lawsuit". He may be a stock character, but at least he's a good one.
Yeah, Stan's a great character.
I agree that Pacifica is getting on my nerves; at least her screentime was minimal in the latest ep.
I think the best part was Mabel losing her mind and spending a month banging her head on the totem pole. That was extremely sad and really funny at the same time.
The show's on another three-week hiatus again, with the next episode being "Fight Fighters" on September 14. After that, it goes on another two week break, with "Little Dipper" on the 28th.
This show takes too many breaks. :whuh:
I know. It ruins the mood when I have to hear about the latest Austin & Ally.
:wth:
Why? It's not like they have anything better to put on, and if the episodes are already finished...
They're probably trying to stretch first season as long as possible. According to Alex Hirsch, season 1 has 21 episodes.
9 episodes has aired, so we're close to the half-way range.
Stan works a lot better when he is not the focus of the plot, but I am coming around to him as long as he stays in the background and keeps to the one-liners.
I thought the best line was the one about the future laser arm cannon that actually ended up happening at episode's end. There were a lot of clever time jokes and I'm glad they kept it to Dipper and Mabel for it so we didn't get more of Dipper's unrequited love or everyman jerk teenager Robbie.
Robbie is really annoying but I actually liked Wendy's other friends, they should bring them back.

That's Romney. There's no reason to have Romney on the show that doesn't involve pandering.
Oh, huh, you're right. This show must take place in the 80's or something... didn't recognize him looking so young.
Still not sure how it's pandering to the internet fanbase though. Unless Gravity Falls fanboys are hardcore republicans.
Eh.
I'll reserve judgement until I actually see the clip myself.
...okay, Hirsch trolled me. I feel so ashamed of myself.
Huh.
I think it's time one of us writes an article on pandering on the blog. I might as well take it, unless there are any other volunteers.
I don't see it as pandering regardless. It's not like other kids cartoons never showed political figures before (I remember a few appearing in one or two episodes of "Pinkie and the Brain")
Yeah, use of political figures isn't pandering. Heck, Animaniacs even had "Bill Clinton plays the sax" in the theme song.
It depends on the plot, really.

The crazy thing is, he's probably my favorite big bad, too.
I've been catching up with this show, and it really is a hoot.
The bad news: the newest upcoming Gravity Falls is all about Dipper hating Robbie.
The good news: the episode is about Dipper unleashing a character from a Street Fighter parody game (Fight Fighters) to beat Robbie up for him and the episode is full of retro gaming references.
Sadly, I don't think Robbie (or Pacifica) are going away anytime soon. A lot of the plots thus far have largely centered around their respective rivalries with the main cast, and for some reason I don't see that changing.
...while it's not ideal (Pacifica moreso for me; she is just an awful, awful character), as long as the rest of it holds up, I'm still good.
I feel kind of proud that I helped spread Pinecest. Don't know why.

This episode... my God, this episode...
If you haven't seen it yet, you have my pity. Trust me, it's that good.
Good gags, but the plot didn't do much for me. It was WAY to reference-y for my tastes.
Soos stuck in the machine was hilarious, though.
"Fight Fighters" was a good episode. I prefer the episodes when the twins work together to the ones where they each have a separate subplot, and I'm really getting tired of the Dipper/Wendy/Robbie love triangle (Robbie must be seriously insecure to feel sexually threatened by a 12-year-old) and I really hope that we'll get a break from the romance for a while, but the video game references made this one for me.
"Oh, no! I have no 'look up' animation!"
"This is as still as I can stand!"
"I'm Dipper! I have shorts and determination!"
"It's a-me, Mabel!"
Eh, I loved it, but to each his own I suppose.
This episode will have impossible expectations for me given what I interpreted on Twitter.
"I'm slower but I jump higher!"
Watching it now.
You know, even though Dipper and Wendy's story isn't going to go anywhere, I like how it's the young boy that has a crush on an older girl for a change of pace, instead of the other way around.
That was fun, especially for Street Fighter fans. I like how they even put the bonus round in. Now that's how you do it.
This episode is utter proof that Lil Gideon and his dad need more appearances.

This episode is utter proof that Lil Gideon and his dad need more appearances.
Damn straight. Also, what was up with Gideon's mom?
"Text me a photo? Okay, now you're not even speaking English."
Another amazing episode, once again. This show just never ceases to impress.
Gideon's dad is even better if you remember that his voice actor did Bill in "King of the Hill"
Yeah, Gideon and his Dad is hilarious. They stole the show for me, as well as Stan. So Stan's full name is Stanford Pines? That's what they all keep calling him...
Yeah, there were a couple of instances in this one where Bud sounded exactly like Bill. In the first episode Stephen Root keep the two voices pretty distinguished, but at least a couple of times in his second appearance, it almost felt like I was watching KOTH for a second (not that that's a bad thing, though).
Watching this one again earlier today, it really was a great episode. As much I as loved Fight Fighters and all of the references, I'd say this one tops it. The writing was absolutely top notch once again ("Oh, hi Gideon. I've been looking for someone to try out my new mirror maze-then again, you're an idiot. That's the end of the sentence."), and I really loved the dynamic between Dipper and Mabel; this episode did an especially great job in highlighting that. IMO, it's one of the best things about this show, and it's such a refreshing change of pace from the usual stale sibling rivalry tropes that often muddy up a series whenever a brother and sister are involved.
The Halloween one looks fun; can't wait for that next week. Sadly, I've been told that's the only new episode for the entire month of October. I don't know what Disney's deal is with this show (I mean, NONE of their other stuff, whether it be Fish Hooks or the live-action garbage, ever takes this much time off), but these constant, almost month-long breaks episodes are really getting old.
Yeah, Friday's episode was everything I really like about the show. Weird paranormal stuff and humor that builds off it, a strangely unpredictable plot, and a nice sibling bond on top of it.
Even I will admit Stan was funny here, but I think he's always at his best when he's paired up with Gideon.
More episodes like this and Double Dipper would be appreciated.
No thoughts on last nights episode?
Probably not as good as last week, but still a lot of fun. I loved the loser candies especially; for some reason, I'm really craving a "Mr. Adequate-Bar" right about now.
It was cute, but I preferred the past 2 episodes. I dunno, this one just didn't do it for me as much.
The following isn't about last week's episode of Gravity Falls specifically, but about the series in general:
Of the twins, I definitely prefer Mabel over Dipper, primarily because Mabel is the "wacky" twin who's unashamed of who and what she is and she's brave enough to just be herself. I want to like Dipper, but my main problem with his character is that he's too "normal". Dipper is the "average every boy" who typically falls into the average, every boy trappings (wanting to accepted socially, getting the girl, etc.) To this, I say "Blah." I'm really getting tired of this particular character type, with young boys especially. I get that GF's producers and writers want Dipper to be the sane, sensible twin, but my feeling is why does the show need to have a straight character at all? Why can't both of the twins be silly, just in different ways? I would love to see a young male protagonist on a TV show who isn't motivated solely by being popular or impressing a neighborhood girl.
The way I see it is that Gravity Falls itself is about pre-pubescence, portraying the life of a pair of 12-year-old twins, possibly during the summer before middle school.
By having the main characters be the exact same age, they can make a contrast between this stage of life, by having Dipper be the kind of boring, somewhat whiny kid who's ready to grow up and embrace this phase of his life, while Mabel is more reluctant to grow up, and acts so goofy in contrast. GF isn't the first show to do something like this with its main characters, but it does explain why Dipper seems so much less fun in comparison.
I personally like having the male be the more mature and subdued one for a change, but I do see what you mean.
Quote from: AviatorI personally like having the male be the more mature and subdued one for a change, but I do see what you mean.
Oh, I'm with you there. It's a nice change of pace to have the male half of a duo be the more laid back and sensible one and the female being the goofy one, but Mabel's episodes aren't typically about her wanting to change something about herself in order to gain acceptance, be it from Wendy or society in general. For the most part, Mabel is content with just being herself, which is why I like her more than Dipper.
I just saw a commercial for this show that featured nothing but the internet meme shots of the pig in the costume followed by the title of the show.
That was worrying.
That falls on Disney by choosing to market the show as such, though.
A one-off credits gag is not a sign that the show is falling into some cheap, pandering trap. If they start running away with memes during the actual episodes, though? Then I'll be worried.
It's just not how they should be advertising the show since it has nothing to do with the actual show.
Really, I liked the episode, but that was my least favorite part of the episode.
I thought it was a cute as a one-off, but no, I don't want to see them head down *that* direction either.
Really, I'm surprised Disney is marketing the show like this. It's not like that was even an overly memorable gag anyway. Strange.
Disney flat-out doesn't know how to make decent ads. They know that Gravity Falls is popular with the older crowd, so they obviously think they're being clever with the whole meme thing.
As for the episode itself, it was alright. These Wendy episodes can be a real drag, mostly because Wendy herself isn't even really a character. She exists to give Dipper motivation and doesn't actually do anything herself.
Hurr hurr, Candy dressed as a piece of candy :hayguyz:

New episodes coming early 2013.
New episodes were coming either way; Season 1 has 21 episodes in the bank, and they've only aired 12.
Just hope this means we get a Season 2. And 3. And 4. And... and...
After four long months, it's finally back (https://twitter.com/_AlexHirsch/status/291022513654341632). Well, almost.

That's because they order, like, 30 episode seasons in advance, and have a LOT to air and plan.
I'm glad to see there's finally a set date for this show's return. My first reaction to seeing an episode of this show: "Finally, a reason to watch Disney Channel again!"
Alright, new episode tonight!
Let's hope this keeps up for a while.
Boss Mabel was a nice return. The plot was wrapped in a clever way and I really liked the way "what would happen if Dipper just brought in a real monster?" was handled.
Good to see this show back on the air.
The poor monster became what he never wanted to be.
That was a pretty good one. It's nice seeing the show back on.
Man, it's been a long time. Honestly can't believe they pushed it back over four months between episodes, considering that (from what I hear), they had at least 3-4 of these finished and ready to air way back in October.
Whatever though. Just glad it's finally back. Tonight was a good return to form, too. We're 13 episodes in, and still not a misstep to be found.

Yet another week off until the next episode (March 15th).
Man, Disney Channel blows. I don't know how this show can possibly sustain any kind of viewership momentum with scheduling this fucked up.
There's a new episode every 2 weeks, apparently. And I thought Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network's half premieres was bad. I suppose that it could be worse, but since GF is literally the only thing that I watch on Disney Channel anymore, you would think that Disney would try to keep as many new viewers as possible.
It is kind of disturbing that the only thing I watch on a channel was postponed for several months and now only comes on every two weeks. At least it gets good ratings and has a large fanbase, which is more than I can say for the other Disney show I care about (Tron Uprising).
At least they're pushing it. P&F is the only other animated show they push at all. (But given how it has effort put into it unlike Fish Hooks, it's better than the alternative)
They seem to at least now they have a quality show.
Yeah, Disney seems to know that they have something here, and the show is a perfect compliment to P&F in terms of its following, even if it is clearly better.
Oh, and I've been enjoying the past couple of episodes. I just wish they'd come out at a somewhat faster pace.
Oh yeah, I should have mentioned that the last episode was pretty good.
It's like when Futurama remembered Anthology Of Interest was a thing.
Just found out that Mermando (merman in the latest episode) was voiced by Matt Chapman of Homestar Runner fame.
I miss Strong Bad Email. :(

Cool.
Chapman also played a guest villain in the
Aquabats episode "Cobra Man!". As soon as I heard his character talk, I thought, "Hey, that's Strong Bad!" And he was wearing a Luchador mask to boot!
Does Homestar still exist?
Cute episode, btw.

Nope. The brothers have to deal with raising children and TV work now. They don't have time for making Flash cartoons on the Internet.
I hope I'm not rocking the boat here, but this episode is pretty awful.
Eh, I kind of agree. It felt like it was being to much of a tribute to the creators sister, which I know it was. Pretty subpar.
Yeah, there's been far too much attention devoted to romance on Gravity Falls as of late. It's starting to bring down the show. I really hope we've seen the last of the Dipper/Wendy/Robbie triangle for a while, as this is easily my least favorite aspect of the show. There were a few decent jokes, but overall, this one was pretty "blah". Even Mabel's sweater design wasn't very imaginative this week.
Eh, I got some chuckles out of the episode, but I'm tired of romantic plots being the focus in the show in these recent episodes. Gravity Falls established itself with a focus on supernatural mysteries. Let's get back to that, shall we?
While we're at it, I'd like to get less stories with Dipper and Mabel each having separate plots. The better episodes (IMO) are the ones which the twins work together on a single plot as opposed to the ones where they split off into their own little bits of business.
On the up side, we haven't seen Pacifica Northwest since "The Time Traveler's Pig", so there's that. (Well, we saw her from the back in line at the Sev'ral Timez concert, but thankfully she didn't say or do anything.)
I hope this leads to less appearances of Robbie in the future. I really can't stand that asshole.

Ditto. I am hoping that Wendy is smart enough to be "Enough is enough."
I do agree that this probably my least favorite episode so far, but if Wendy breaking it off with Robbie is going to be permanent, I can be OK with this.
Yeah, Robbie's kind of been a reason why I haven't been keeping up with the show. He just kills the fun of every scene he's in.
Have Wendy's other friends even reappeared since their first appearance? They were way more enjoyable than Robbie was, yet he got all the focus since.

To be fair, this is the first episode with him in a little while.
I'm not done with the episode yet, but Mabel has been incredibly unlikable for most of the episode. I got a kick at the boy band's line about how their music is for you, and not just any girl, you in particular, though. That's pretty much all of One Direction's music in one line there.

The boy band was the episodes saving grace.
"We're not threatening!"
Finally got around to watching it today, and... yeah, that one was really weak. I generally sing the praises of this show more than most, but I think I can safely say that was the first truly bad episode up to this point. But hey, it was a good run. It took until, what, episode 17 until we got our first real stinker? That's a pretty damn good ratio for a new series.
...and man, fuck Robbie. He's actually worse than Pacifica at this point.
Pacifica had what, 2, 3 episodes? Robbie isn't as present as he's made to be seen, but he's definitely had a lot more time to suck up the fun in the show.
The relationship stuff (and bully stuff) really takes away from the show and makes it very generic at times. They didn't need a character like Pacifica in the show either, nor did they need to thrust Dipper's Wendy obsession further than one-off jokes. But then I guess they figure Wendy would then be totally useless.
The show is at its best when it's focused on Gravity Falls itself and not normal sitcom cliches. I really hope they don't forget that. It's probably why I didn't enjoy the video game episode as much as others. Because game stuff aside the plot was very throwaway.

Actually, the video game episode was more important than you realize. Can't say I'm surprised, honestly (at this rate, with four episodes to go, it'll have taken them an entire calendar year to air one season), but still. Kinda sucks too that this weaksauce episode is all we're getting for at least another month.
I find it distressing how so many of you don't realize that Pacifica is designed to be a parody of popular girl tropes rather than an actual antagonist. Mabel doesn't even care about her.
As for Robbie, he a douchy teenager. For what he is, he's fairly realistic.
Just because they're supposed to be asses doesn't mean that they can't be interesting ones. As for realism, most douchey teenagers I've seen usually ignore little kids or make passing remarks than go out of their way to antagonize them on a regular basis. Especially when there's company.
There's a Regina George gif I could use here, but I can't think of one.

This.
If characters like these are going to be a constant influence on the series (in the case of Robbie, anyway; Pacifica hasn't been a factor for ages, so I'm kinda hoping they got the message and gave her the hook), give them at least
one redeeming quality; whether it be a couple of good one-liners every now and again, a sweet, humanizing moment...
something. Don't just make them as bland and unlikeable as possible simply because they're a parody of a particular stereotype.
Yeah, stereotypical school-age jerks can be entertaining. I name-dropped Regina George, but besides her, I've been able to laugh at characters like Jimbo, Kevin, and Sarah, for just a few examples, just fine, even if they're not people I'd want to be friends with. They're funny and have each contributed enough strong storylines and dilemmas to justify their existences.
Robbie and Pacifica don't add anything but unnecessary conflict to already packed and defined episodes in the latter's case, or drag down the rest of an episode with the former. I think it's fair to call them low points in an otherwise fine show.
Quote from: Spark Of Spirit on April 22, 2013, 04:13:26 PM

They had cameos in Double Dipper and Boss Mabel, but not any speaking roles.
To be honest, I found all of her friends to be nothing more than obnoxious bit-players best suited for a one-off. Shame though that, of anyone in the group, they decided to stick with Robbie as a regular.
On another subject; once again, I'd like to point out that we still have four episodes left in Season 1, and we're only less than two months away from the show being a year old (and we're not getting anything this month at all). Has that ever happened before? Has it ever taken a network an entire calendar year (or longer) to air a single season of a television series? I honestly cannot recall.
Young Justice.
Welp, I stand corrected.
Still bullshit. That ultimately doesn't surprise me though, given CN's general treatment to non-toyetic action series for about as long as anyone can remember.
And Invader ZIM.
It took over a year for season 2 of American Dragon to air, but that was extended.
Oh, season 5 of Ed, Edd n' Eddy. That took a couple of years for it all to air, IIRC.
According to /co/, we're only getting one new episode next month. "Land Before Swine" airs on June 28th.
Now that's a wait!

So we're only getting a single new episode of Gravity Falls per month now? That can't be good for the shows' ratings.
Yeah, this one was way better than the last episode. I'm always a sucker for adventure episodes.
Now THIS is why I love this show. Great character interactions and adventure. And yes, this is much better than the last one.

Still, I did kind of like how Stan said that Dipper kind of reminds him of himself when he was younger. I felt like that this was stuff they were building up to in the show earlier on, kind of with having Stan and Dipper bond from time to time and showing that those two really aren't that different.

The season finale is tonight! And it's happening half an hour earlier (8:30 instead of 9:00).
What a fucking finale!
I really liked the fight between Dipper and Gideon inside the Gideon Mecha, along with moving Dipper's character of him growing up. Also, I guess this is the first time Soos being Hispanic was confirmed, I had a feeling since I thought his nickname was based on the Hispanic pronunciation of Jesus. I do wonder how they'll bring back Gideon, maybe he'll break out of jail or something.
That was okay.
It was a pretty good season all-together.
I'd be interested in seeing them apply what they learned for the next season. They seemed to learn a lot as it went on.
A DVD is coming out of the show. (http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Gravity-Falls-Six-Strange-Tales/18800)
But not a season set. I usually don't go for singles or assorted releases, but I might make an exception for that journal.
Eh, I only go for season sets these day. Much more bang for the buck.
Six new episodes on October 14-18. (http://www.nickandmore.com/2013/09/11/disney-channel-announces-monstober-2013-programming-highlights)
Those aren't going to be full episodes, it's just a new short series called "Dipper's Guide to the Unexplained." The shorts will only last like, 5 minutes, much like the new Mickey Mouse cartoons and other short animated series they've done over the years.
Episode confirmation on the DVD set. (http://tvshowsondvd.com/n/19008)
So basically, just the first six in chronological order. Eh.
The week of Gravity Falls shorts starts tonight on the Disney Channel!
So I caved and bought the DVD set. Walmart had it marked down to $10, which, for six episodes still isn't an overly great deal... but given that it's Disney and all, this is probably the best we're going to get when all is said and done. I mean, when was the last time they actually released a full season set for anything?
Anyway, the adventure journal that came with it is a neat little trinket, but nothing spectacular. It's basically just a small collection of exerts from Dipper's journal in the show, a couple of postcards from Dipper and Mabel to their parents, and a map of Gravity Falls. It's cute, but I was honestly hoping there'd be a bit more to it. Ah well, it's still nice to own at least some of the show on hard-copy.
Five more short episodes (http://www.toonzone.net/forums/disney-pixar-forum/312163-february-2014-premieres-disney-channel-disney-xd.html) on February 3-7!

Took them long enough.
They took forever to renew it.
Yeah, I know. Doesn't change the fact the wait has been long. Airing 21 half-hours over a little more than a year is standard for any kids cartoon these days, but because Gravity Falls is a half-hour series and not quarter-hour it had to be spread out very carefully so as not to cause people to be impatient or lose interest. Renewing the shows late was a terrible decision because it has lead to this nearly year-long wait for new episodes, which can only hurt the show's popularity with kids. Disney should really be doing a better job handling GF's production, imo.
Yeah, my interest has died out for the show a little because of how long it's been since a new episode aired. I'm sure once season 2 starts up that'll change, but Disney kind of dropped the ball here.
In case anybody didn't already know, a bunch of new shorts have aired in Mexico and Italy.

I'm not sure if anyone else is reading this thread, but it appears that Disney is moving the show's premiers to Disney XD, if a new promo is to be believed.
It's official, Disney has completely botched their handling of this show and it's not likely we'll see anything beyond season 2.
Damn.
If that's true... well, then that's that.
The promo in question is this. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOg48tQ2Jbs)
All they say is that "this spring, the new home for Gravity Falls and Wander Over Yonder is Disney XD." Not really sure what to make of that. It's too vague a statement. I'm going to wait until they make an official press release announcing that the shows are going to be exclusive to XD from now on before I start getting worried. If they are just going to be premiering new episodes on there first, well, Phineas and Ferb did that for a while too, and it didn't get canceled or stop airing on Disney Channel or nothing.
That may well be true, but the fact that the newest batch of shorts are premiering on XD causes my antennae to go up.
I'll reserve final judgement until the next season actually premieres, but there's no question Disney's handling of this show has been abysmal.
...........and this is why we can't have nice things. Honestly though, it was never gonna last. It's popular on tumblr and what all, but I don't think this show resonates with general audiences like Phineas & Ferb or whatever. Certainly doesn't help matters that Disney markets it as poorly as humanly possible, but it is what it is I guess.
At this point I'll just be happy if it ever ends up on DVD/Netflix/whatever. The episodes we do have are good enough to tide me over for the foreseeable future, especially given that I lost all of my recordings months ago and haven't seen most of these in quite a while.
The strange thing is, from what I've seen Gravity Falls did better in the ratings than P&F was when they were airing new episodes together. I can't tell if that's due to fatigue for P&F, the fact that it was on a half hour later, or that GF was becoming a more popular show, but it's weird to see it get the shaft already.
We still don't know if it actually is getting the shaft. While the shorts premiering on XD first is odd, the promo saying the new home for GF and WOY being XD is vague at best and we've yet to see if the show is going to be taken off Disney Channel, or if new episodes won't air on there at all.
I just feel we're all jumping the gun a bit, since all we have to go on is a 30-second promo that tells no substantial information.
I dunno, I'd say it's highly unlikely it lasts past a second season. You don't kill a series momentum this badly if you intend to keep it around for a while.
...........and wait, wasn't Wander Over Yonder already cancelled? Or am I mistaken?
Wander Over Yonder hasn't been cancelled yet. However, it also has yet to be renewed. It took a year for them to renew Gravity Falls for a second season, so I wouldn't count WOY out, but it's fate is up in the air.
Anyway, I actually found more substantial information on what is going on. According to Craig McCracken, new Wander Over Yonder episodes will premiere first on XD, but later air on Disney Channel as well. (https://mobile.twitter.com/CrackMcCraigen/status/436036678545702912?p=v) This is probably also what's happening with Gravity Falls too. Now, I can't say I can get too worried from this, because this is what happened to Phineas and Ferb when it started it's second season, and that show didn't get cancelled or nothing. I don't know how likely it is GF will get renewed past a second season, but the past evidence doesn't prove conclusively that Disney wont do it.
We may be looking at a Freakazoid scenario in which the show didn't get the audience the network wanted. Except I know for a fact that kids love the show.
The long break they took after Summerwean aired is understandable, because new episodes simply weren't ready. However, there's no excuse for this wait. This is longer than the Young Justice hiatus, and GF isn't exactly demanding in the visual department. My best guess is that Disney simply wasn't willing to give Hirsch the budget he wanted.
I'm sure all the new episodes will air on DC at some point, but their premieres numbers will be much lower than Season 1. Whether that ultimately matters remains to be seen.

That's what happens when you market a supernatural comedy with internet memes. Gravity Falls has had the worst ads I've seen for a show in ages.
I hope it lasts through season 2, but I'm willing to bet it'll be the final one. Unless Disney starts trying, that is.

Just watched the season premiere.
This show just gets better by the minute. A giant bombshell was revealed about the journals.
Yeah, it was a great episode. It also includes Stan finally admitting something to the kids. Anyone else notice that the only two characters not at the party were Robbie and Pacifica? You don't hear me complaining.
I'm really looking forward to more episodes like this.
They did air a new episode on Disney XD. This time it was about Dipper crush on Wendy and visiting a place that's in Dipper's Book. Looks like they're finally gonna drop Dipper's crush with the resolution that happened in the end. Well, at you need to at least acknowledge why it wouldn't work to drop it.
Next week, the Pacifica returns and challenge Mabel to mini-golf.
Wait, XD has already aired a new episode? When did they do it?
Well, at any rate, I'm glad to hear they are dropping Dipper's crush on Wendy. I got tired of that real quick last season.
Like Yesterday. Looks like XD's plan is to air a new episode of GF every Monday night at 9 PM. They aired last Friday's episodes at 9, then the new one at 9:30.
Also, in case you're curious about Robbie, he was only mentioned in this episode. His only appearance was on Wendy's phone, and Wendy was still mad at him after the events of last season.
Looks like the next episode will be a bit more of a breather after the plot-filled premiere episodes. Mini golf with tiny golf ball people. How adorbs.
That Ducktective segment was amazing.
The season has been off to a good start thus far. I do hope that this is the end of Dipper's crush on Wendy though, or at least helps to silence it for a little. She's right- she is too old for Dipper, and it gets tiresome.
I really have to say, Mabel is by far the best character Kristin Schaal has ever played. I can't wait to see what happens with all the UV revealed Journal entries.

I can understand people not liking Dipper's subplot with Wendy because it's obvious they won't get together; but they're only
three years apart. If the writers/creators wanted to, they could let Dipper and Wendy have a relationship.
I'm okay with Gravity Falls not being the one to do it, but I'd love see a cartoon where they actually let a kid be with his or her teenage crush provided of course they're only a few years apart like Dipper and Wendy.
Wait, Wendy's only 15?
Huh. It's still a little weird though, since Dipper's barely going through puberty now. But seriously, I do appreciate how the show acknowledged that Wendy knew about his crush. Kids usually aren't very subtle with their crushes, especially not boys.
Just watched the newest episode.
Dipper is a gigantic asshole throughout the episode, and wants to leave Pacifica to die but Mabel insists on saving her. I just wanted to slap him.
Pacifica is everything Mabel said she was when she goaded her into playing golf with her. I side with Dipper. :immad:

Yeeeep, Disney's annual burial is already starting; once again it's gonna lose traction before it even gets off the ground. Fuck man, just give the show to a network that's actually gonna, you know, care about it. I feel like at this point we'll be lucky if we even get the rest of Season 2 before 2016, let alone a 3rd season (unless I'm just being overly paranoid here and there IS a new ep scheduled in the not-too-distant future; feel free to stop me at any time here guys).
They haven't really been treating any of their animated shows particularly well, so I wouldn't say it means more to Gravity Falls than other shows. That said, it's been a while since a Disney Channel show has run less than three seasons or 65 episodes so I hold out hope for this one to at least make it to one of those milestones.
I hope it does, because so far season 2 has corrected every issue I had with the first one.
Yeah, I haven't been hearing much about Wander Over Yonder lately, and P&F became one of their worst performing shows in the past year or two.
Disney seems lost with their animated work right now, which is a shame, since it seemed like they were stepping into the right direction.
The next episodes are on September 12 and 19.
Looks like the premieres are moving back to Disney Channel. They're not scheduled for Disney XD right now.

Disney XD premieres are scheduled for September 8th and 15th, so they're sticking with the current idea of all their animated series being under the XD brand (if you can call Disney XD a brand).
The newest episode premiered tonight.
Spoiler
Bill is back.
Surprised with how soon they brought Bill back. I like that they have their own version of Mxyzptlk/Q in this show. Wonder if the Author of the journals is what this season is building up to.
I especially enjoyed the Muppet tribute at the end.
Also, Vinylmations are coming (http://themysteryofgravityfalls.tumblr.com/post/96919919189/gravity-falls-is-getting-its-own-vinylmation-set)!

Yeah, that surprised me as well, wasn't excepting to see him return until much later into the season. Not that I'm complaining, Bill is quickly becoming one of my favorite characters in the show.
I liked how they subverted the whole "the audience thinks everything is part of the show"- cliche at the end.

Oh yeah, and this week's episode was pretty good, as well. It was nice to see Soos be the focus for a change. My favorite part was when his date called out how weird it is for him to rely on kids like Dipper and Mabel to save the day.
Did you guys check today's episode? It's one of the biggest spoileriffic episodes for the whole season.
I know this hasn't been posted in for awhile, but I just gotta say it.
Season two has been great. I know we're only halfway through the season, but barring a massive slip-up, I think I'm good with what I'm saying. Any gripe I had with season one was directly addressed and improved with this season and at the same time both the writing and general stories have been far more enjoyable. It really is a shame Disney is sitting on this show-- it deserves more attention.
"Soos and the Real Girl" was pretty unique, and an accurate commentary on guys who prefer animated women to real ones. Plus, I never thought I'd see the dating sim genre referenced in an American cartoon.

And unlike the other video game episode in season 1, this was fairly creepy and character-centric as a whole. Gravity Falls is at its best when it relies on characters and surreal/supernatural stories jokes, which this season has been packed with.
A new episode aired tonight!
Spoiler
They're all fucked.
Glad to finally see a new episode. It's been what, 4 months?
Anyway, tonight's episode did a pretty good job at furthering Pacifica's character. Glad Hirsh and his crew decided not to just have her be a one-dimensional mean rich girl, as we've had more than enough of that archetype in cartoons the past decade. Also, from the looks of it she's going to be Dipper's new love interest. Makes sense since they decided to drop his crush on Wendy. Plus they're the same age. I look forward to any more character development we get this season.
And yeah, like Daikun said things are picking up with the main arc if the very end was any indication.
On the one hand, I'm glad to see Gravity Falls' writers actually developing Pacifica's character further after "The Golf War" and not just hitting the reset button and having the character revert back to being a one-dimensional snooty girl stereotype (this is what the writers of Littlest Pet Shop should be doing with the Biskit Twins, as those characters make no sense as antagonists), but on the other hand, I can hear the shippers gearing up for Dipper/Pacifica fan fiction already. I'm not sure how to feel about that, but at least Dipper is being shipped with someone his own age this time.
That bit with Pacifica's father ringing that bell to keep her in line was creepy. :whuh: Her parents seem like truly awful people.
OH GOD! THAT ENDING! THAT REVEAL! THAT EVERYTHING! What is happening?

The last one is the most important. It's another cryptogram.
Dude that ending was messed up, I still don't know what to make of it all. It's.....I mean I dunno, I feel like it changes the dynamic of the series way too much for my liking. The character development and overall relationship growth from here on out are gonna be very interesting to keep an eye on. I'll give the writers the benefit, they've given me no reason to believe they won't handle this well (we're 31 episodes in and nary a stinker in the lot), but.....man, this really does flip the entire series on its ear.
Good ep though.
I honestly wasn't that surprised by either twist, but I'm definitely am curious to see how the dynamic between Stan and the kids changes because of it and how the story unfolds from here on out.

Yeah, the downside of "going big" the way that the show has is that there's no way to return to the status quo afterwards, unless everyone's minds were to be erased somehow, which would just have all of the fans yelling "COP OUT!". However, it seems evident that Alex Hirsch (sp?) never intended for
Gravity Falls to go beyond 2 seasons, as few Disney cartoons do.
In the scene where the government agent told Dipper and Mabel that they'd be sending them to child services, I was waiting for one of the twins to point out that Stan isn't their legal guardian, that they have parents, both of whom are still alive and that they're only staying with Stan for the Summer, but it never happened. It means nothing, these are just the kinds of things that I notice now.
I think he originally had a 4 season plan but because of Disney being wishy-washy about renewing it so late for season 2, he revised it to 3 seasons to make sure it reaches the end.
He planned well, because these days all Disney shows only go 3 or 4 seasons and rarely less. Never more.
Oh, and as for my opinion, I liked it. I've been very impressed with season 2 so far, and this continues the streak. The revelation wasn't that surprising given everything we know about Stan, but the reveal at the end is a twist I didn't see coming at all.
Definitely interested in seeing where the back half of this season goes now. There's no going back on this.

The only ep that I've downright hated thus far is "Boyz Crazy", everything else has had at least one thing or another redeeming about it, even if it wasn't a classic from start to finish. Probably the next closest for me would be "Irrational Treasure", only because it had
so many bad Pacifica moments (who at that point was just a one-note character that hadn't been developed yet like in Season 2), but for the most part it was still funny enough to look past.
What other ones were you thinking?

You named one of them. The other was the Dipper Manliness one. There are a handful of others from season one I'm not a fan of, but I won't say they were bad, just not my cup of tea, like the first video game one.
As a whole I've really liked season two, though.
New episodes start on July 13. (https://twitter.com/_AlexHirsch/status/609398074234945538)
Looks like a prequel episode is up next.
I guess the season will end on August like last time?
Hopefully it gets renewed soon.
There's about 9 to 11 episodes left. I'm pretty sure Disney is going to drag the show out until early 2016.
Looks like this episode will be a full 30 minutes without commercial breaks. (https://twitter.com/_AlexHirsch/status/617032408655761408)
Kinda curious to see how this will play out for reruns.
Any thoughts on the latest episode? Personally, I liked it. This is pure speculation, but it seems to me that the series is drawing closer and closer to some sort of finale. At any rate, it will be interesting to see where things go from here.
Also, was that Tara Strong voicing Mabel's unicorn-doll in the beginning? It sure sounded like her.
I'm a bit behind, so I haven't seen it yet.
But I believe the series original plan was four seasons, but because he wasn't sure it would go that far, he dropped it down to three seasons. So I think whatever happens from this point on is going to be sharper than the earlier stuff.
The series has definitely been delving a lot more into the overarching mythology in recent eps, to the point where I'd tend to agree; it feels as if they're working a lot faster towards a conclusion of sorts than in the past.
Of course, if Disney wasn't so flippant on their handling of the series, I'd say we're at least good for one more season in spite of this (there's plenty to work with here in regards to these characters
beyond that mythology). It's just too hard for it to get any kind of traction at this point though; like, the episode where.....
Spoiler
Grunkle Ford is revealed
.....had pretty decent ratings, but everything since hasn't been so great. You combine that with almost no merchandise to speak of, and it's hard to imagine this show being around much longer.
Not to say you're wrong, but these days Disney has an unwritten rule that all their shows run 3-4 seasons. Go back a couple of years and you'll see that none of them ever fall short of that mark. Their XD shows are also given a lot of leeway with the ratings. I don't think this will be any different.
I would say Gravity Falls has a three season lock at this point, but don't expect a fourth.
This season does feel like 2 little mini-seasons mixed together. I read that was Alex Hirsch's plan after how season 1 was handled and he was worried about getting canceled in season 2. "Not What He Seems" feels like it would have made a spectacular season finale worthy episode, while "A Tale of Two Stans" would have made for an interesting season opener, along with having episodes with Ford in them testing the dynamic between Dipper and Mabel. Doesn't help that Disney put a long hiatus between those episodes.
I can see season 2 ending with them somehow defeating Bill and setting it up with facing his boss or something. Bill really doesn't feel like an end game villain and other supplementary material has implied that he is working for someone.
It's a happy ending. :happytime:
I for one welcome our new Dorito overlord. All hail the magical flying Dorito chip!
fuck
Yeah, the shit really hit the fan this episode, didn't it?
Also, Ford is clearly projecting his own unresolved issues with his sibling onto Dipper. Otherwise, I don't see why he couldn't take on Mabel as an apprentice as well.
Quote from: Pharass on October 14, 2015, 06:06:03 AMAlso, Ford is clearly projecting his own unresolved issues with his sibling onto Dipper. Otherwise, I don't see why he couldn't take on Mabel as an apprentice as well.
Nerdy science stuff isn't really Mabel's thing. She's wacky and is Dipper's opposite in every way. There's no way Ford would take her under his wing.
True, Mabel's not into science, but presumably being Ford's protege would involve more adventurous pursuits as well and I think she'd be into that.
Still, I'll concede that the point is moot, since Ford is laboring under the belief that the only way for Dipper to realize his potential is to strike out on his own. Here's hoping that he and Stan manages to patch things up between them at some point.

Finally watching Weirdmageddon right now. Man, that intro........
It's all ogre. This is the final season of Gravity Falls. (http://shmalexsmirsch.tumblr.com/post/133619326491/goodbye-gravity-falls) Man, even when the show is on hiatus, Alex sure does have a habit of setting the fanbase ablaze.
So they're ending it by choice.
Oh well, I can't complain. Season 2 has been amazing. I will definitely be interested in seeing what he does next.
I figured as much. I'm perfectly satisfied with what we've gotten out of the show, so I'm not disappointed to see it go. I'm glad they're ending it on their own terms, and it's going out on a high note. Hopefully whatever Hirsch works on next will prove just as good.
Not a terrible surprise or anything, just not at all how I was expecting it to go down (as far as Hirsch choosing to end it himself, rather than it being cancelled). Sucks though, it definitely still has some gas left in the tank.
It leaves behind kind of a strange legacy though; I mean, has a show ever taken nearly four years to air only two seasons worth of content? Off-hand, I honestly can't think of one.
I'm okay with it. Had Disney XD not schedule the show like and old man with ADD, it probably would have had its third season finished already. I can understand if Alex Hirsh wants to end it partly because of that. Not to mention he more than likely wants to do other work that thanks to Gravity Falls' schedule his hands have been tied to. At least the show is going to have an epic finale no matter what.
