Anyone watched the sneak peek last night, after Kids Choice Awards? I thought it was decent, personally.
Official debut is tonight at 7 PM Eastern.
I have literally no idea what it's about but I might check it out.
It's from the same guy who made Chowder.
Here's a preview. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgBUo2eFUXY)
I just saw the preview episode last night, it was OK. Nothing groundbreaking or world-rocking, but OK. I liked it more than Nick's other recent animated comedies, though that's not saying much 'cause I'm not a fan of either of them (I'm not even going to say that Breadwinners or Sanjay and Craig are bad shows, they're just not for me).
When I first started seeing promos for this show and I scoped out the cast, my initial thought was "more anthropomorphic animals. Yay." :unimpressed: But at least they're still recognizable forest animals in a fairly close-to-nature forest setting, they're not mostly human man-freaks like the characters on Arthur, so there's that. (I still prefer human leads overall, but oh well.) The characters were engaging enough, again, no earth shattering characters in the bunch, but fairly amusing creations. Harvey himself and Fee seemed likable and appealing, Foo not so much: he appears to be one of those 'LOL random' character types that I've never been crazy about, plus I'm not wild about his design, he's got that weird growth coming out of his head that makes him look like a Pikmin, but it's only the first episode, maybe we'll see more to Foo's character as the show progresses.
The other characters were a tad one-note, but still appealing enough: Princess seemed like Lumpy Space Princess fused with Eric Cartman and I kind of liked Technobear, but I'm a bit of a fan of techno music myself; I admit to getting a mild chuckle out of him hitting on Harvey's mom.
I'm kind of surprised that so far no one's touched upon the fact that Harvey's dad and Baymax have the same voice actor, Scott Adsit.
Overall, it wasn't bad by any stretch, but it lacked that special something that puts comedies like Gravity Falls and Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse over the top for me. Or maybe I'm just being overly cautious, as I've backed C.H. Greenblatt's work previously and was later burned by it: I was a big fan of Chowder when it debuted, and was one of those gullible suckers touting it as the next big thing in animated comedies only to have to take a HUGE drop in quality after a season or 2, so Greenblatt's gotta work hard to earn my trust again.
Again, my world wasn't rocked by Harvey Beaks, but depending on when it airs, I could see myself watching it as an alternative to nothing.
Well, I'm sure it's a step up from Breadwinners, in any case.
I'll have to wait on this and see how it turns out. The last time I got invested in a Greenblatt show it fell off a cliff and exploded at the bottom.
Hey, a non-action show on Nickelodeon that doesn't make me wanna jam my eyes with a fork! :joy:
It's been a long time since I've been able to enjoy a comedy cartoon on Nickelodeon. Outside of their action shows, barely anything has really grabbed me on the network since I fully jumped ship to CN in 1998. It's refreshing to see something that actually seems appealing.
I don't know if I'd call this a classic, but it's decent enough that I might check it out once in a while, and that's hard for me to say about Nickelodeon shows these days.
The 2nd show aired today. Both were touching and fun. It really is like a punk version of Winnie the Pooh (that's how the creator described it).
And, yes, it's nothing like "Chowder" at all.
I don't think it would have been a bad thing if it was like first season Chowder. In any case, I quite like the feel and tone of the show. Rather relaxed and refreshingly not reliant on absurdity like other cartoons these days tend to, and the backgrounds and color in the show are just gorgeous. It's not the funniest show in the world, perhaps, but it's charming enough to want to follow, and that's more than I can say about anything else on Nick these days.
Just wondering if anyone caught the "Garfield" reference. Harvey was shown reading in his room, and he said something like "Boy, that cat sure loves lasagna"
Anyone think the rabbit has a crush on Harvey?

Yes, Yes I do. Even I'm feeling some vibes from that rabbit liking Harvey since the first episode I saw.
I knew kids like that. They idolize another kid to an absurd degree because they envy them too much and want to be them. The rabbit reminds me of them.
So far I'm enjoying the show, but I'm still keeping my guard up.

Well, it's not subtle. :P
There will be 4 new episodes airing this Saturday.
9:15AM - The Nature of Nature
9:45AM - Princess is Better Than You
10:15AM - Old Fashioned Dade
10:45AM - Someone's Stealing My Stuff
They'll be airing SpongeBob between the episodes, hence the 15-minute breaks.

You used to prefer Nick? I feel sorry for you.
Well to be fair, Cartoon Network didn't have that many originals until around that time. I like Hanna-Barbera better than most, but a channel built on mostly their work could get old fast.

I didn't have CN until the late 90s.
EDIT: Also, what Avaitor said. Nick was churning out quality hits already while CN was still in its "we're still experimenting" stage.
I didn't like many of Nick's hits but yeah, HB could get old after awhile.
At the same time though, I was way more into Dexter's Lab, Johnny Bravo and Cow & Chcken than anything on Nick at the time. And when CN premiered Powerpuff Girls and Ed, Edd n' Eddy within the span of 2 months (yes, really), there was no turning back to Nickelodeon.
But this thread is about Harvey Beaks, which I haven't seen yet. It looks cute, but I'm a little unsure about giving a Greenblatt show a chance after what happened to Chowder. Although the first season and a quarterish are still great...

You can watch full episodes on Nick's website.

EDIT: Crap. It seems they've taken off a couple. :whuh:
Harvey Beaks is absolutely nothing like Chowder.
Like, remember when Mike Judge transitioned from "Beavis and Butt-Head" to "King of the Hill", and how the two shows differed? Basically, Greenblatt transitioning from "Chowder" to "Harvey Beaks" is like that.
Annnnd...is it safe to say that Dade is kinda gay for Harvey?
It hasn't been subtle. :P
"Comet Night" was pretty fun. It was one of those "two episodes that take place in the same time, but with different characters POV" thing, and it was done well.

I hope they make a third part sometime down the road. It would've been interesting to see the whole babysitting skit.
C.H. Greenblatt just confirmed (http://chgreenblatt.tumblr.com/post/122114220102/has-harvey-even-been-picked-up-for-a-second-season) that the show got second season
Glad to hear it.
New episodes start July 18 at 11AM.
I watched a few episodes I missed with a friend last weekend. This is such an enjoyable show. I really hope it doesn't fall off like Chowder did, because I really like it. Though it's already better than Chowder's best as it is right now, at least.
I keep forgetting about this one. It really should be next on my list, especially since I finished catching up with Star vs. the Forces of Evil ( in my book).
Yeah, it's really great. Though, I think it's debatable whether it's better than Chowder's best depending on what you're hoping to get from it. It hasn't produced episodes that have made me laugh as hard as some of Chowder's strongest, nor has it met the same creative heights it had at times. But then again, it really isn't a laugh-out-loud kind of show; the draw of the series, for me, is more in it's strong cast of characters, beautiful art design, and charming innocent tone. It's a very nice, feel-good kind of show, and I really like to have those kind of shows to brighten up my day, particularly ones as well-crafted as HB is. I think I'm enjoying it more than I had Chowder back in the day, and I think the characters are more endearing too. Considering it's different focus as a show than Chowder, I'd like to think that it won't fall into the same trappings. For now, though, I'm content enjoying the show as it is now, and am glad Nick finally has another promising animated series to capitalize on.
I like the show because I feel like I can just sit back and enjoy its lax pace while the characters go through their little adventures. The earlier example comparing it to Mike Judge's two main shows feels apt here. This is a more character based show that works on simple plots and some clever jokes. It's not explosive, but that's why I like it.
Also, no jerk-ass characters helps a lot. Even Princess, who is utterly selfish, does not go out of her way to make everyone else miserable. No one is an unlikeable jerk. Gives me hope that it won't be used as a crutch for jokes later on.
Yup, I agree. And it is quite refreshing to have a cast of characters in a kid's cartoon, especially a Nicktoon, that doesn't have a single jerk or bully in the bunch. That's also a factor in why I don't think any character degradation into obnoxious or unlikable territory will be much of a problem with this series like it became in Chowder.
New episodes on Labor Day! :joy:
Also, it seems like Harvey Beaks will have premieres on Fridays from now on. See TZ's schedule thread. (http://www.toonzone.net/forums/threads/september-2015-premieres.5499561)
Oh cool, new episode tonight. I've been hankering for a new one.
New episodes start this Friday at 8PM.
Season 2 begins in June. (http://nickalive.blogspot.com/2016/04/viacom-reveals-nickelodeon-usas.html)
It's about time! This drought has gone on for too long.

Harvey Beaks returns tonight at 5:30! Three whole weeks of new epsiodes!
According to an interview with Greenblatt (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fY9xhUFpf7k&t=32m55s) on the Pizza Party Podcast, they're already working on the finale.
Well, I guess that's it. :'( Damn you, Nick, for not treating this well.
Also, there'll be a whole week of premieres on September 26 at 5:30.
Two seasons and that's it.
Boy, if I had a show to pitch, I can't see any reason why I would take it to Nick. There's really no point.
Dang, haven't even started watching it yet. Is it really over after this season?
Jeez, feels like more than ever Nick isn't even trying anymore. Only show they really have besides SpongeBob still going is TMNT. I haven't even heard anything about FOP which makes me think that last dumb season with the little girl is it.

If you need something else to watch on the network,
The Loud House has been gaining a lot of traction lately.
I keep on seeing things for The Loud House, but I still can't get behind a show from the guy who ruined Dexter's Lab and Powerpuff Girls.
I haven't got around to this one yet, but it sounds like it was Greenblatt's decision to end it soon, but it also seems like Nick wasn't really pushing it to begin with.
I watched a few Loud House episodes and thought it was all right. I can understand the appeal when you realize it's secretly a harem show.

I meant that they don't have that many longer running cartoons. Loud House I've heard nothing but good things about and I want to check it out too, but its still brand new and that may not be a guarantee Nick will renew it for another season.

Yeah, that's pretty much the problem.
Nick didn't outright cancel it, EDIT: Never mind. They cancelled it themselves. but Greenblatt was working on that show for years (he'd been developing it while
Chowder was still airing), and watching Nick practically shove it in the backburner likely deflated his interest to continue producing it.
The show might not end after all. (http://chgreenblatt.tumblr.com/post/150841510387/breaths-in-breaths-out-slowyhi-greenblatt) It's up in the air whether or not Nick picks up a new season. If it does, though, Greenblatt might not be involved.
It would be a shame for the show to end after only two seasons, but then again, who knows if it would still be as good without Greenblatt's involvement. I guess we'll see what Nick decides.
New episode this Saturday at 11:30AM.
Turns out that the final episodes of Harvey Beaks are gonna air on Nicktoons now. Guess who isn't happy about that news.[url] (http://chgreenblatt.tumblr.com/post/152842056197/im-so-sorry-something-you-poured-your-whole-heart)
It's well known that Nick has absolutely no idea what they're doing. If it isn't an already established franchise, they simply don't push it. The show could have done really well if only it had been given any sort of focus, and there really isn't any argument that it got any. 15 hours of total airtime is abysmal.
Personally, I was surprised it even got a second season.
Nick needs to rethink their programming and promotional decisions when it comes to their cartoons, otherwise they'll never be able to find or nurture the next Spongebob-level hit.
I feel really bad for Greenblatt. This is the second time a network has cancelled his show after a promising start, this time before it even had a chance to truly take off. Based on his comments, it doesn't seem like he'll be working with Nick again. Wherever he goes next, I hope the next project he works on will be treated better.
At least it got to 52 episodes and never fell off a cliff. I'd definitely be more interested in his next show after this one. It was a real surprise.
In his other Tumblr asks, he did mention that most of his problems are with the network itself rather than the animation studio. He can still be bitter about Chowder all he wants, but at least Cartoon Network promoted the series end, unlike Nick that decided to shove it to Nicktoons Network, where it feels like all the shows they don't like will die on there. Being CH Greenblatt is suffering.
This news does kinda make me worry about The Loud House, but I did hear that they renewed it for a 3rd season.

Yeah, I think that show will be fine. They promoted the hell out of it just for its premiere alone, giving it a whole month of premieres as soon as the show started.
Like it or not, I'm gonna support the hell out of
TLH. If this is what it'll take to get the network's focus off that damn sponge (hey, it got 3 seasons greenlit in half a year), then so be it.
It really is time for Nickelodeon to have a hit that isn't the sponge or the turtles. They can't rely on those forever.
The story made Cartoon Brew. (http://www.cartoonbrew.com/tv/nickelodeon-forced-harvey-beaks-creator-c-h-greenblatt-apologize-cartoon-brew-144630.html)
They live off franchises made back in the 50s, 80s, and 90s. Nick hasn't had an animated hit they built themselves in almost 20 years. That's beyond pathetic. Just like the fact that they even bother to continue making FOP episodes.
Is it any wonder they went back to the Arnold and Rocko well? I'm surprised they've been all but ignoring Rugrats during all this too. It's still their only classic show sitting unreleased without any rights issues.

What's really pathetic is how they managed to stay on top this long, when they could have fizzled out in ratings a lot sooner. If CN started in the 80s first before Nick came along, they would be getting slaughtered with their current model.
So CH Greenblatt leaked something pretty big. (http://chgreenblatt.tumblr.com/post/152920504832/what-if-you-and-jhonen-vasquez-got-to-make-a) Though someone else is denying it. (https://twitter.com/JhonenV/status/796188834874523649)
Based on what I've been seeing, I don't think Greenblatt is doing all that well, and considering how Nickelodeon screwed him over, I don't blame him. I hope that he gets some help.

Looks like he deleted it. Doo doo do! He salty as fuck, I don't remember him being this pissed since Chowder getting shafted by CN's midlife crisis known to the public as CN Real.
I wonder if he'll try Disney next.

As in pitch a show, maybe. He did work on Fishhooks for a while IIRC.
Tbh, I'm worried Greenblatt might have trouble finding work after this debacle, much less get to create another show in the future. There's a difference between the way he handled the cancellation of HB and the way McCracken handled that of WOY; one made sure at the onset not to decry the network they were working on. Greenblatt is probably not going to be welcome at Nick after this nor is he likely still welcome at CN, and with how Cartoon Brew has publicized his discontent and fueled the fire, other networks might be wary with working with a guy who might openly bash them in the future.
It's possible, but I doubt Disney cares about such things. Craig McCracken did not mince words about CN's treatment of Foster's and they still took his new show. Then there's Netflix who seems to buy anything that looks good to them. Nick is fast becoming known as the network to avoid when pitching shows, and that's not a good place for them to be.
I'm just hoping that if Greenblatt gets another chance to make a show, he doesn't suffer the heartbreak of watching something he's worked on for years be mistreated again. Two times is enough.
Next episode airs December 9 at 8PM. (http://nickalive.blogspot.com/2016/11/nickelodeon-usa-to-premiere-brand-new_9.html)
I've finally got around to watching this show, and I'm enjoying it. This is a cute little thing that feels useful and unique on Nick, right when the network needs something like that.
Not sure if I have a favorite character yet, but I'm only about 6 episodes in so far.
Holy crap! The Christmas episode is quite a treat!
Spoiler
No dialogue! :swoon:
I paused the show after I finished the first season to watch The People vs OJ, so I'm getting back to it now. I'm already 6 episodes in.
This really is a cute show. I like how genuinely nice Harvey is, and that he's still imperfect. Harvey can get impatient and has a temper, moreso than a good amount of nice and energetic leads. and thankfully the rest of the cast is tight, as well.
The only character that I'm not crazy about is Dade, who's a little too much. Just, he's too much.
