Well, if there is one thing that I can say about anime compared to most Western cartoons in a positive light, it's that the former typically tends to put a bit more effort into its music, and many great anime have a wide breadth of well-composed scores, giving their OSTs both variety and also a distinguishable identity. For this thread I want to mainly focus more on OST music, but feel free to talk about your favorite OPs and EDs as well.
For today, I want to get at least some of you guys acquainted with the awesome music from a series that, outside of its own country, is tragically overlooked and is still to this day left unknown to even plenty of hardcore anime fans. Yeah, if there's one thing anime unquestionably trumps american cartoons in, it's better music. Seriously, the ost in any battle shonen anime trumps every superhero cartoon not named BTAS by miles.
Those Ashita no Joe tracks are badass. I'll have to listen to them more to see how much of an impact they stay with me, but it's certainly the kind of music I dig.

I made these lists both top 15 ones because, though I tried, I really couldn't cut 'em down any further since I really love all of these songs. However, because posting lists like this take so much time for some reason, I'll only put up my top 15 opening list right now, and put up my endings list when I'm less busy.
Also, because this thread is solely dedicated to the music of anime, my rankings are only based on how much I enjoy the songs by themselves. I know what you're thinking. A Pokemon opening? CREDIBILITY INVALIDATED. Well, hold on, and actually take a listen to it. This opening is for the original japanese version of the anime. Specifically, it's the first opening of the second series (known here in U.S. as seasons 6-9), Advanced Generation. It's upbeat, full of energy, and lyrically, it's very fitting for the mood of the early AG episodes, and the franchise in general. Reading the subtitle lyrics actually makes me a bit nostalgic for the days of playing the generation 3 Pokemon games on my Game Boy Advance, and for this portion of the anime as well. It's a strong song and always a great listen, and the second best (imo) in Pokemon to date.

There are three anime themes that have been repeatedly used throughout their franchises: Lupin the Third's, Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro's, and Cutie Honey's. I have never actually watched any Cutie Honey series, but I have heard every form of it's irresistibly catchy theme song, and whenever I recall it I find it hard to get it out of my head again. My favorite rendition of the theme and opening is Re: Cutie Honey's, by virtue it sounds the most energetic and jazzy of all them. All the songs are the same lyrically though. They're laughably silly and campy, which is the charm, and at the same time it's what makes it awesome. They really get stuck in my head sometimes, and it's not hard to get pumped up whenever the singer yells "Honey Flash!" I'm not sure if I'll ever get around to watching a Cutie Honey series, but the endless renditions of this song over the years are all the validation I need to claim it as a truly awesome and kick-ass theme.

Rockin' Latin-esque beat? Check. Good, fitting lyrics for the part of the show it covers? Check. Badass? FUCK YES. This song simultaneously pumps me up and get me sentimental over some of the most emotional/intense parts of InuYasha (manga, of course), and I always enjoy listening to it.

....But, no, seriously. I really do think that the original japanese opening for Pokemon is a more kick-ass opening theme. The beat is faster, the lyrics more meaningful and fun ("Even if in fire, in water, in grass, in forests/In ground, in clouds, in that girl's skirt" > any line in the U.S. opening), and there's more energy to it. Don't get me wrong, I am fond of the U.S. opening and it is nostalgic for me, but the original japanese song is just a cooler song, and the one I prefer at the end of the day.

There's both an english version and japanese version for this one. I love them both. "Rock the Planet" is the opening song of Urusei Yatsura that best covers the kind of show it is, in my opinion, even more so than Lum's Love Song. More than that, it's just a kick-ass song to listen to. Rocks the planet indeed.

I just love this theme. I loved it from the moment I first heard it, and I still listen to it regularly now. It's like the embodiment my kind of music, which, as you probably can see by now, is upbeat high-octane adrenaline pumping jazzy goodness. It's also the most iconic anime theme ever, imo. Even alone the song reminds me of the greatness that is the Lupin the Third franchise.

SAY WAH! BOBOBO! SAY WAH! BOBOBO! This is by far the most adrenaline pumping, ass-kicking opening theme for me. If you look at my list, the actual opening isn't that high up, because as much as I like it other songs have better use of both visuals and the song. Alone, however, this song does SO much for me to remind me of the awesomeness that is Bobobo. I can't help but feel pumped up and nostalgic from it. Yeah, I'm probably biased, but this is the kind of anime theme that every other anime comedy wishes they had, and it's on par with the best of the best battle shonen anime themes as well. I love it to death, and probably will until then.

So, even though it was years until I would actually watch the series much less the movie, the song already left an impression on me. :D

And it's strangely nostalgic for me too, which is something I don't know how to explain. I love all the songs I've put on this list, but among them, I can say with most certainty that "Positive" is the one that gives me the most pleasure out of all of them.

It was played when Gon sitting in a field thinking to himself about how he had gotten as far as he did because everyone helped him, and that he couldn't have done it alone. Those are the two scenes that I particularly recognize the songs from. For anyone who knows what songs I'm talking about, can you tell me what their names are?

I have to admit, if you can get into this type of show, it's easy to get attached to the characters in it. And this ending theme really captures that feeling of connection with them (if that makes sense). It also creates a bit of sadness and, in some ways, nostalgia when you listen to it at the end.

I think those two openings really do a phenomenal job at giving off the overall feeling of the two seasons. The first season is all mystery and, in many ways, kind of crazy and downright creepy. The opening captures that feeling well. The second opening, on the other hand, has a feeling of just overwhelming sadness that sets the tonw for Kai, which almost has a feel of hopelessness to it.

That, as listed as the show's main theme, is the best in it, I think. Remember that feeling of hopelessness that I mentioned the second season carries? Well that background theme captures it, but in its own, kind of creepy way. I do have to admit though, that for personal reasons which coincide with the time when I saw this series, that theme does make me feel a bit uneasy. But it's really perfect.

I like tracks as well. I was looking for the fight music that first played when Kurapika fought Uvogin and the tense music that played when he chained him and tortured him by punching holes in his stomach. I just finished listening to an 80 track playlist and neither one came up (I did find some new favorites though. :D I'll post my favorites later.)
Okay, I've been thinking about it a lot recently, and I've decided. I think Uchuu wa Daihen da! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOkiPs5HtIY) is my favorite ending theme, if not my favorite anime theme in general.
Wild and crazy, celebrating letting go of all your inhibitions and embracing absurdity and spontaneity, and living life like one big party. The song perfectly captures the wild weirdness of Urusei Yatsura and doesn't fail to excite. It's no wonder they used it to close out the last episode of the series, since of all the songs used for the anime, it reflects the series by far the best (yes, even more than Lum's Love Song). It inspires a diverse amount of reactions and feelings from me listening to it, and probably the only other themes that really do so for me are Positive from Ranma 1/2 and Ai wa Boomerang from Beautiful Dreamer. So, yeah, I think I can safely call it my favorite, for the time being.
But heck, all of the UY ending themes are great, really. I'd say the first two, as well as "Ai wa Boomerang," "Remember My Love," and "Melancholy no Kiseki" are my personal favorites of the bunch.

I miss the days when Geneon USA released anime soundtracks. Those were good times.
Unfortunately, right now in America we're in a transition period when it comes to buying anime music. CDs are dead, but North American distributors haven't jumped on the download bandwagon yet (either that, or the Japanese license-holders don't want to play ball), so we're left with next to nothing. It'd be nice if one could download official anime albums from iTunes, for example, but to my knowledge that hasn't happened yet.
Ah, Geneon. I like a lot of music from shows they license so that's a shame.

None of the ending themes this season really grabbed me, except for Parasyte's, which sort of makes up for the fact it's OP was the worst of the season, in a way.
While I don't care for Parasyte's opening, I wouldn't say it was the worst of the season. It at least had good animation going for it. World Trigger on the other hand had shitty music and animation.
It's the worst for me because I LOVE Parasyte and thought it shoud've had an awesome opening. The song also annoys the hell out of me. World Trigger's is lame, but at least the song doesn't make me want to claw my ears out, and I didn't have any attachment to the series in the first place.
I think that the song is pretty bad in World Trigger, myself. You're basing what's worse out of what you were looking forward to more, but even if the song in WT is better shit than Parasyte, it's still shit, so it's a moot point. WT has 2 knocks against it, and Parasyte at least has that animation.
The song in the Parasyte opening is much worse to me than the one in World Trigger, and even though Parasyte's opening has good animation, the song alone makes it much less watchable for me than World Trigger's, which at least I can sit through. In the end, I just found WT's opening forgettable, while I hated Parasyte's, and that why it's the worst for me.
Shit is shit. I don't see why you'd try to differentiate between one piece of shit and another piece of shit with slightly less worse music than that, but still unwatchable. But hey, whatever floats your boat. :humhumhum:

I've been relistening to some of my favorite OSTs in preparation for the Anime Theme tournament (well, trying to when the stupid fucking adobe plugin doesn't up and crash on me), and dammit, there's way too much good stuff from too many series that I'd want in. And I still have a heck ton of OST's left to comb over too....when the time comes, I honestly might just end up nominating mostly Urusei Yatsura music alongside some other token choices and call it a day. :sweat:
I'll help you a bit. The limit will be 35 with a possibility (50/50, maybe less) chance of adding a few more and an impossibility of infinite nominating.
Once I think about it, yesterday marks me finishing the entire playlists for 3 different series and in a week. I need to do one more..once I think about it. This thread has already did the work for me with other OSTs so I'm not in too bad of shape.
Only 35 nominations and not 50 like in the Video Game Theme competition? Urk. That just makes it even tougher, especially considering I have, like, 30 more series' OSTs to plow through.... :sweat:

My favorite ED this season is definitely the one for Haikyu. The Spyair OPs and Nico Touches the Walls EDs are always fun to listen to in this show. The other bands they use are fine, but those two are always the most fitting for the series.

I did like the second DiU opening's visuals, but the actual song just didn't compare to the others.
I fucking love Chase as a song, but the visuals don't live up to the usual JoJo standards.

There was a lot of others I really liked that I left out. This was a good year for anime ops and eds.
That Gintama ED was easily my favorite of the year. It manages to sum up the story quite well and is quite effective emotionally. Not sure if they'll be able to top it, but we'll see.

Yeah the song itself is just average, it's the opening itself that makes me wanna gouge my eyes out. And then you watch the actual show and it's even worse
