Title: Jonny Quest
Post by: Avaitor on July 08, 2011, 06:59:16 PM
And just as it earned a slot on the top 10, it deserves it's own thread.

A hugely important series, it's also, IMO, the best thing HB has ever done. Everything I've written about the show I've meant.

This documentary (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gk3zJjD2QB4) (note: it is VERY long. Like, 2 hours+) goes into even more detail than I could ever attempt to as to why it made it on here, but besides that, I'll make a list of some of my favorite episodes very soon.

Just finished watching this thing in whole again. I should try to find the full version though, since two parts were cut out. One with homages from Family Guy and Venture Brothers of the show, and another with various end titles. Even then, I don't think you'll miss too much by skipping those parts.

But yeah, this gets into just about everything regarding the series, from its highs, lows, the development of each character, the limitations of Hanna-Barbera and how the show pushed it's staff to try it's hardest, HB's work prior to and past Quest, television at the time of the show's release and how JQ fit and didn't fit in with standards at the time, the storytelling, music, artwork, lasting impact, and especially Doug Wildey. Some of the past examples of his work that seems familiar to particular characters and events in Quest are quite interesting. This even takes time to mention alleged plagiarism and a collection of pitiful facial expressions, showing that the series wasn't perfect, despite how enthusiastic the narrator is.

As for favorites, if you want to see some of the show again, I'll recommend "Calcutta Adventure" for the more "realistic" aspects of the show. This shows the clan's first encounter of Hadji and how he became a part of the Quest family. It's my most-watched episode overall and hasn't lost its affect on me despite how many times I've seen it. For the sci-fi elements, "The Robot Spy" is eerily awesome and really worth checking out.

Isn't Venture Bros. just an improved version of this show?

I mean, it has comedy!

Jonny's Golden Quest has just been announced for a DVD release. (http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Jonny-Quest-Jonnys-Golden-Quest/15693)

I'll admit that I've never seen this movie before, but I think in this one, what happened to Jonny's mother is revealed, and it introduces Jessie. I am familiar with Jonny Quest Vs. the Cyber Insects however, which came out just before Real Adventures aired. I have that on VHS and thought that it was a very interesting conclusion to the classic Quest stories. If this is as good as that, I'll order it.

I had no idea the current runs on Boomerang and the DVD release were censored. That makes me kinda mad. The DVD should not be censored. Kid's aren't going to be buying it. Though the dialogue cuts bother me a lot less than the violence censorship. Gotta say the violence cuts make the show considerably less bad ass than it probably was without them.

I'd like to see those episodes in their full glory. It's a shame there's no legal way of doing that.

Huh, check this out (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1913243956/jonny-quest-episode-in-stop-motion-animation) Jerry Beck linked to it.

This looks really cool, although I'm not sure if it's entirely legal. If I had the money, I'd send some their way.

Happy 50th anniversary to Quest!

I was hoping on making an article to commemorate, but that probably won't happen. Or maybe it will. For now, just talk about it here if you want!

The best show Hanna Barbera ever created, imo. I really wish the series got a good sort of remake series or something (not like Real Adventures, though).

A few days late to be saying this, but Hanna-Barbera fan Yowp wrote an article commemorating the show's 50th anniversary. (http://yowpyowp.blogspot.com/2014/09/an-11-year-old-turns-50.html)

So the Flintstones/WWE crossover isn't the only exciting thing to happen to non-Scooby HB franchises this year. (http://hkfilmnews.blogspot.co.uk/2015/03/tom-and-jerry-spy-quest-tom-and-jerry.html)

Now that's a cute idea. Some of the recent Tom & Jerry stuff hasn't been half bad from what I've seen, either. Should be interesting.

Dr. Zin? I stopped reading at the sight of an obvious Yellow Peril villain name.

Here is the trailer. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLsHlO8OGTo)

It looks pretty okay. Besides the Mystery Incorporated episodes and cameos/parodies in Venture Brothers and Family Guy, this will be the first new Jonny Quest property since Real Adventures, which was almost 20 years ago. Damn.

A crossover movie with T&J? Hmm. Well, I'm a huge fan of the original series, and new Quest material is better than none after all these years, so I'll take it. Hope it turns out good!

What? WB is doing something other than Scooby-Doo?

Sure, they're still overdoing Tom & Jerry, but I'll take it!

Robert Rodriguez is making a live-action movie. (http://www.toonzone.net/2015/05/sin-city-director-set-direct-live-action-jonny-quest-movie)

A Quest movie has been in and out of development for so long, that at one point Zac Efron was attached to play him.

And I also recall there being a point when Rodriguez was attached to make a Jetsons movie, but obviously that fell through too. Regardless, I'm curious.

Please don't Del Toro, RR.

He also did Spy Kids 3D.

He's really going to have to do better than that here.

The movie is still going on, but Rodriguez has been removed (http://www.toonzone.net/johnny-quest-movie-looking-new-director) (they're supposedly still using his script, though).

Also, Future Quest is quickly becoming one of DC's best-selling titles.

I bought the first issue when I checked out my local comic book shop the other week (Jonny and Hadji cover or bust), but I haven't read it yet. If it's good, then I'm glad for its success.
