Title: Your Top Favorite Animated Shows
Post by: talonmalon333 on October 01, 2012, 11:04:23 PM
What are you guy's top 5 favorite shows in each form of animation? Basically, see if you can make a top 5 for American animation and anime. And if you want, you can also do lists for animated shows from other locations. You can also do top 10 lists, if you want and are able to. I figured that it might make sense to create threads like this for both the general animation, and anime boards. But I thought it might just be better to have this one for both.

I'll try to do lists for them eventually, when I decide on them.

The one with the ambiguously gay characters.

The one with the ambiguously straight characters.

The one with Lauren Tom in it.

The one whose main character had an "A" in their name.

The one where everyone was crazy.

This is way too hard a question for me to answer. For now however, I'll go with these:

1. Gargoyles
2. Batman: TAS
3. The Venture Brothers
4. The Mysterious Cities of Gold (although being a collaboration between the French and the Japanese, perhaps it should recieve an honorable mention in the anime category as well?)
5. Spectacular Spider-Man

1. Legend of the Galactic Heroes
2. Monster
3. Cowboy Bebop
4. Ghost in the Shell: SAC/SAC: 2nd Gig
5. Twelve Kingdoms

I still need to get around to seeing your #1 pick on your anime list, myself, and I've heard good things about your #5 pick as well, so maybe I should get around to checking that out sometime in the future.
Title: Re: Your Top Favorite Animated Shows

Definitely give Twelve Kingdoms a try, since it features both one of the most original and living settings that I can think of in fantasy and a great cast of characters. Youkou in particular is fantastic, possibly my favorite female character in animation. It's not every day that an animated show gives us a main character who is incredibly easy to dislike while also being complex and believable. Her gradual growth throughout the series was great to watch.

Hmm... This is going to be real hard for western cartoons.

1. The Batman
2. Spectacular Spider-Man
3. Justice League/Unlimited
4. Looney Tunes (Toons? It's been so long)
5. Batman Beyond

Despite the criticism's of The Batman I really enjoyed it. Perfect blend of action that I was looking for along with great animation. If only I can get a chance to tune into Young Justice. That might be what I'm looking for when it comes to great action along with great animation (and artwork to boot). The artwork/animation looks exactly like Under the Red Hood and that's probably the best thing I've seen thus far when you consider what I look for (in anime and cartoons)

1. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
2. Samurai Champloo
3. Ghost in the Shell: SAC/2nd Gig
4. Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit
5. Rurouni Kenshin/ Samurai X

The more I think about how Ed annoy's me (in both the 2004 anime and Brotherhood) the more tempted I become in bringing the series down a notch. He's not nearly as bad as he was in the 2004 anime, but his bratty nature really brings the series down a bit for me, but the other characters keeps me from doing so.

You're right. :)

Have you thought about giving Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes or Gargoyles a shot? The former is about as strong as Justice League or Young Justice, and the latter is was made by Greg Weisman, the head writer of Spectacular Spider-Man and YJ, and contains plenty of his best work.

Yep, seen Gargoyles, not in top 5 but definitely top 10. As far as Avengers, much like Young Justice, I haven't had much of a chance to tune in. Are Young Justice and Avengers on dvd?
Title: Re: Your Top Favorite Animated Shows
Post by: Dr. Ensatsu-ken on January 07, 2013, 12:59:17 PM
Avengers has been on DVD for a while. I know that the first season has a box set but I'm not sure about the 2nd season. Either way, I'd prefer a complete series box set if that's ever made available.

I'm also not sure about Young Justice.
Title: Re: Your Top Favorite Animated Shows

Yeah, Avengers is on DVD, as well as Netflix. I think YJ only has singles now though.

For some reason, Warner is the only company that still does singles for its shows, but at least most of their DC shows do eventually come out in season sets.

Well, in my most personal opinion, The Spectacular Spider-Man is a better show than Batman: The Animated Series, and while Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes doesn't necessarily have any episodes that are quite as great at BTAS's greatest episodes, it does have a number of its own great episodes and on the whole is a lot more consistent in maintaining its quality than BTAS (yes, I really didn't have any problems with the 2nd half of season 2 minus maybe 2 or 3 episodes at most). I also like AEMH better than Justice League (including Unlimited), but I do like Justice League quite a bit, on the whole (I'd go so far as to say that I think its on par with BTAS in terms of overall quality, as both series have plenty of hits and misses, but theirs hits are really memorable).

Don't get me wrong, I love BTAS, but I don't think of it as the end all, be all of superhero cartoons like other people do.

Yeah, The Spectacular Spider-Man and Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes are pretty great. I fully recommend watching those if you like BTAS and the DCAU.

From my youth:

Super Friends (1977-onward)
Thundarr the Barbarian
Spider-Man (1967 series)
Arabian Knights (Banana Splits)
Battle of the Planets

Modern era:

Batman: The Animated Series
Justice League/Justice League Unlimited
Gargoyles
Thundercats (1985 series)
Jayce & the Wheeled Warriors

The Spectacular Spider-Man is a show that I've always been interested in. Good to hear you guys think it's quite good. I'll definitely have to check it out now. I see it doesn't have a huge amount of episodes, which sounds a bit disappointing. Though at the same time that might make it easier to get to.

Haven't seen Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes either, but I'll have to keep that one in mind as well.

If I'm not mistaken, TSSM was originally meant to run for a few more seasons (or at the very least a 3rd season was planned), but for whatever behind the scenes reasons, the series got cut short. Its really obvious too, since the show never got a proper ending. I mean, it is an episodic series on the outset, but there is a continuum of events playing out in the background so in that regard its also telling a story arc, but unfortunately the show never got renewed for a 3rd season and ended on a cliffhanger. Still, the reason we love the show is because its the epitome of quality over quantity. Those 26 episodes are great, and there's not one rotten apple among them.
Title: Re: Your Top Favorite Animated Shows
Post by: Avaitor on January 07, 2013, 11:27:07 PM
I think Greg had a 5-season plan for the show overall, plus a couple of DTVs. He at least had some very built ideas set for a third season which never came to fruition.

It was because of the buyout. Which is a shame because a 65 ep run would have been perfect for it.
Title: Re: Your Top Favorite Animated Shows
Post by: Avaitor on January 09, 2013, 12:47:59 PM
Stupid buyout. And it's not like anything has really happened ever since it occurred. Marvel characters are still at Universal, while Disney Stores and the parks just sell action figures and trades you can get anywhere else, Avengers would still have made a shitload of money without Disney's "help", there's been next-to-no merging between the two companies, etc. Hell, Cartoon Network might even get the next Avengers cartoon.

All that has really happened is that we lost one really good show, and a decently promising one, with the merger.
Title: Re: Your Top Favorite Animated Shows
Post by: talonmalon333 on January 09, 2013, 12:53:40 PM
The weird thing about it is them replacing Spectacular Spider Man with just another Spider Man show. And from the sound of things, that one sounds vastly inferior anyway.
Title: Re: Your Top Favorite Animated Shows
Post by: Spark Of Spirit on January 09, 2013, 01:00:56 PM
It's pretty awful. The ratings will probably plummet when EMH vanishes from its tail end.
Title: Re: Your Top Favorite Animated Shows
Post by: Avaitor on January 09, 2013, 01:05:18 PM
That's how the industry works nowadays. Comic book characters normally don't get a show unless they have a movie come out, and they almost always run their before their next movie, so a new show can be made. Even if SSM did survive the merger, it wouldn't still be on today. We might at least have twice as many episodes as we do now, if they didn't get to hit 65, though.

Although I can't help but feel like the cancellation of SSM was in part done by Jeph Loeb, in hopes of having a Spidey to be in charge of since day 1. It would also explain why Avengers: EMH came out and finished its run so early. That was actually in development around the same time as Spectacular, and was only supposed to come out last year. What's even more crazy is you can tell how rushed the show ultimately became while watching season 2.

Post by: Spark Of Spirit on January 09, 2013, 01:07:59 PM
At least now we know what Spidey would be like if Quesada created him.

If that isn't reason enough to want him away from the franchise, then I don't know what is.

Ironically, Legion of Super Heroes is one of those shows that Warner Brothers just seemed to sweep under the rug and forget about right after it ended, like Shaggy & Scooby Doo Get A Clue! and Tom & Jerry Tales, both of which aired on Kids' WB around the same time. The latter at least resurfaces from time to time on Cartoon Network.

Yeah, I was wondering if CN ever showed it. After my jackass network tv station either never showed the final episode or had it on some timeslot I missed, I never saw the show on live tv again. I just got to see the first two DVD volumes thanks to my local library back then and that's it.

Title: Re: Your Top Favorite Animated Shows
Post by: Silverstar on January 10, 2013, 08:23:06 PM
I didn't see remaking Brainy into an android as a necessary move (after all, it's not like possessing 12th-level intelligence isn't a power in and of itself, nor is it like that can't be useful on a superhero team--Tony Stark says hi), but honestly what grated on my nerves was the nonstop trumpeting of "Brainiac 5 is gay for Superman" memes I kept getting subjected to over and over again. I don't have anything gays or slash, when it's canon and genuine and it actually makes sense, that is; when people try to force slash onto something where it clearly isn't is when it bothers me. Those people should have known that Mainstream America isn't ready for an openly gay anything on Saturday morning TV, let alone involving arguably the most iconic superhero of all time. If any of that were really going on for reals, LoS would've immediately gotten labeled "That Gay Cartoon" and been yanked off the air and replaced with reruns of Dink, the Little Dinosaur faster than one can say "Mideseason Replacement".

Hmm, I never heard that; not saying that's wrong, just that I personally have never heard that. I do know that the late Dwayne McDuffie confirmed that Static Shock's Richie Foley was indeed gay (which isn't surprising, since one of the characters he was based on the the Static comics, Rick Stone, was also gay), but on the show the character's sexual preferences were simply never disclosed.

In fact, homosexuality is certainly nothing new in the DCU/DCAU; on Superman: TAS, the character of Maggie Sawyer from the Metropolis Special Crimes Unit was a lesbian, the only sign of this that occurred on the show was in the episode "Apokolpis...Now!" where Maggie was injured in battle, her lover sat by her hospital bedside throughout much of the episode, though obviously she was never referred to as such (I naively thought the lady was Maggie's sister or something until I learned the truth), and IIRC, Batman: TAS' police officer Renee Montoya was outed in the corresponding comic series after the show ended; on TV she was just never shown dating anyone, and of course Brainy's being gay would completely contradict the JLU ep "Far From Home", wherein Brainy and Supergirl fell in love within minutes of meeting one another.

I honestly don't care one way or the other; with my unique sexual wiring (which I've divulged previously, so I won't bore you by parroting it here) I'm hardly in a position to cast stones; Brainiac 5 is a cool character and I'd like him whether he was into gals, guys, robots or sock puppets, I'm just saying that not everyone is enlightened as we are, a good chunk of the viewing public aren't ready for Superman being involved in an openly gay relationship or any kind of mainstream openly same sex relationship on kids' TV, not without it being the subject or satire or a "Very Special Episode".

2: The Simpsons
1: South Park

I'd explain my choices, but it would take a long time explaining why these shows mean so much to me and how they've impacted and influenced me, and I'm feeling kind of lazy right now. Besides, no one else really explained their choices, so I think I'm good.

Recently, I have just finished watching all of Ranma 1/2 and Lupin the Third (2nd anime, dubbed episodes only) start to finish for the first time ever, as well as my fourth run through of Cowboy Bebop. In addition, I have rewatched several episodes of my other favorite anime series and compared how I still feel about them. Hence, my favorite anime list has been changed accordingly:

Favorite Anime List: (ranks 14-25 have remained the same)

13: Lupin the Third (1st and 2nd anime series)
12: Cowboy Bebop
11: The Slayers (Franchise, although my favorite among them is still Slayers NEXT)
10: Baccano!
9: Gun X Sword
8: Dragonball (Still counting the entire franchise, although I still prefer the original Dragonball to the others)
7: School Rumble
6: Yu Yu Hakusho
5: One Piece
4: Ranma 1/2
3: Trigun
2: Bobobo-Bo Bo-bobo
1: Fullmetal Alchemist/Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (although I prefer Brotherhood by a tiny margin)

Making lists of shows you like is hard...

1. Batman: The Animated Series

Gonna update this a bit.

1. The Batman
2. Justice League/Unlimited
3. Legend of Korra
4. Spectacular Spider-Man
5. X-Men (90's)

As corny as I think the 90's X-Men is now, and I don't think it holds up well at all it still holds a place in my heart. If I'm ever going to be nostalgic about an old show from my childhood this will be the one. Legend of Korra was added (despite the ho-hum ending) because I really enjoyed the fights and animation. For Justice League, Superman is really pushing this series through for me. By the time I'm done watching the entire series I can see it coming out with the #1 spot.

1. Samurai Champloo
2. Ghost in the Shell: SAC/2nd Gig
3. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
4. Rurouni Kenshin/Trust and Betrayal
5. Cowboy Bebop

I can easily bump GitS up to #1, and chances are it probably will go back to it when I re-watch it. It just does so many things right for me. When it comes to anime I compare everything to that, especially when someone tells me ______ has the best animation (which is probably unfair on my part, but hey, don't tell me such things). The only reason I have Samurai Champloo at 1 is because of my love for samurai's. I just love me some samurai action, especially when the animation/fights are nice and crisp. There's nothing to really say about Cowboy Bebop, although, I probably could've replaced it with Gungrave, but then again, they're probably tied for me. Spike and Brandon are great main characters.

Watched/Re-Watched a couple of shows recently, so my list has changed a bit and I expanded it to a Top 25 to match the anime list (although I really feel the strongest about the top ten, whereas the reason my anime list was a top 25 in the first place was because I felt really strongly in my appreciation for all the series and couldn't not mention them, but whatevs).

I didn't include Looney Tunes this time because honestly it's not an animated show produced for television but a title under which a collection of theatrical shorts are rebroadcasted on television, which wouldn't be a problem except that the Disney, Fleicher, MGM, and Paramount cartoons are left out on my list as a result because they were never really rebroadcasted on television the way the Looney Tunes brand of shorts were. Consider all of them prestigious honorable mentions, and if Looney Tunes was put in my list, it would be between Daria and The Venture Bros..

25. Sym-Bionic Titan- Yeah it's got it's problems, but I find it highly enjoyable everytime I watch an episode and Octus' character arc really moved me.
24. The Secret Saturdays - A great action cartoon that is sadly underrated.  :(
23. Black Dynamite
22. Megas XLR
21. Ugly Americans
20. Space Ghost: Coast to Coast
19. Harvey Birdman: Attorney At Law
18. Dan VS. - The Hub's best show hands down
17. Dexter's Laboratory
16. The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy
15. The main DCAU shows (Batman, Superman, Batman Beyond, Justice League) - I like all of them about the same, more or less, so I'm just gonna rank them in one spot on the list
14. Batman: The Brave and the Bold
13. Ed, Edd, n' Eddy - Dexter's Laboratory used to be my favorite Cartoon Cartoon, but after going through this show again I feel it is a lot more consistent in it's humor and quality throughout it's run.
12. SpongeBob Squarepants Seasons 1-5 - I have a renewed appreciation for this show after revisiting the early episodes again. Back when it was good, it was REALLY GOOD. There's a reason why this show stuck with kids and adults alike back in it's prime, and it's because it was well written and wonderfully funny with instantly memorable characters. I'm glad I rewatched it at it's best.
11. Gargoyles - My favorite "action" show produced and written in the U.S.
10. Drawn Together - It's hilarious, dammit. H8RS Gonna H8  :anger:
9. The Venture Bros.
8. Daria - Immensely relatable. Glad I finally got around to watching it.
7. Home Movies
6. The Boondocks
5. Futurama
4. American Dad
3. King of the Hill
2. The Simpsons
1. South Park

I had no idea where to post this. I didn't think it warranted a new thread, and I felt that this thread is probably the closest to just being a general animation thread (though if anyone thinks otherwise, feel free to let me know).

Between episodic shows and shows with long running story arcs spanning across multiple episodes, does anyone here think either one can be considered "better", or more rewatachable, or more well written, etc? I've heard this debate elsewhere, but I personally just feel that there is no answer. I guess the better question would be if anyone here has a preference between the two types of shows.
Title: Re: Your Top Favorite Animated Shows

Well I think episodic series have more replay value seeing as I can't just sit down and rewatch an entire arc.
Title: Re: Your Top Favorite Animated Shows
Post by: Silverstar on August 27, 2013, 07:31:02 AM
I prefer shows with stand-alone episodes to ongoing arcs. Episodic shows have more replay value, since they can be watched and re-watched in any order (usually) and you can catch a single episode or 2 without being lost. Also, like Gunswordfist said, it's hard for me to try and re-watch a story arc. I'm lazy and I have a notoriously short attention span, so once I'm done with an arc, I'm truly done with it. Plus I tend to lose interest in plots which take more than 2 or 3 episodes to be resolved.

I don't agree at all with the notion that episodic shows are inherently more re-watchable than shows with story arcs. There are plenty of shows with ongoing stories that I still have favorite episodes in that I can re-watch, even if they are in the middle of an arc. This includes shows like Gargoyles, The Spectacular Spider-Man, Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Yu Yu Hakusho, Dragon Ball, Trigun, Digimon Tamers, and so on. To me, a show with a continuing story can still be really fun and re-watchable in small chunks if it does a good job of still maintaining a nice level of quality and coherency to each individual episode.

That said, I really like the types of shows in which you have episodic plots that can be watched and enjoyed as individual vignettes, yet at the same time you have multiple episodes like these linked together by an overarching plot that comes to a climax in the story arc's finale. To me, that's pretty much the best of both worlds, if it's done right.

I dunno, I like when certain shows have ongoing storylines, but don't have each episode be a direct continuation of the next, and allow for most if not all episodes to be able to be seen on its own without much context of the whole story. Basically like the Cadmus era of JLU is my ideal.

That probably is my favorite type of storyline, since it allows for overarching stories while being easier to watch.

I personally can have an easy time rewatching episodes in the middle of long running arcs based on continuity. YYH is a good example. Many times I have rewatched "Death of a Spirit Detective" and "Attempting Revenge".

Right. Just like in the 2nd paragraph of my previous post, I really prefer these types of stories to anything else. You get the great writing and character development that comes with an overarching story that has more time for development, but you also get the higher re-watch value of episodic shows since each episode still contains a self-contained story that can be enjoyed on it's own terms.
Title: Re: Your Top Favorite Animated Shows

I honestly don't have a preference. Episodic can be just as continuity-heavy as a story arc without being as blatant so I think they can both eventually offer the same level of enjoyment.

It's probably why the space western trilogy was so popular. They were a mixture of both and succeeded at both.

4- Persepolis
5- Dumbo
6- Fantasia
7- Spirited Away

I don't think I could do a top animated show list. My #1 would just be a combination of SpongeBob, Batman, and Yu Yu Hakusho. I really can't rank any one of them over the other because I like them equally for their own reasons. I think I could do a top 10 animated movie list, though. I'll just need time first.

Okay, so my top 3 is mostly a tie. It can flip all around at any moment. But if I decided on an order at the moment, right now I suppose it'd go...

1. The Lion King
2. Fantasia
3. Beauty and the Beast
4. Toy Story 3
5. Pinocchio
6. Bambi
7. Toy Story/Toy Story 2 (don't feel like breaking this tie)
8. Up
9. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
10. Grave of the Fireflies

So much Disney, but that's me.

2. Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo

Edited the order of my list a little bit. The Greatest Animated Series competition has gotten me thinking about all the cartoons I really like, and there are a lot of them. 25 series really doesn't encompass everything I hold dearly, so I'm going to extend this into a Top 50 list instead.
50. Batman Beyond
49. Pani Poni Dash!
48. Superman: The Animated Series
47. Puella Magi Madoka Magica
46. Courage, the Cowardly Dog
45. Ugly Americans
44. Dexter's Laboratory
43. The Powerpuff Girls
42. Space Ghost: Coast to Coast
41. The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy
40. Ed, Edd, n'Eddy
39. Azumanga Daioh
38. Samurai Champloo
37. Black Lagoon
36. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
35. Lupin the Third (the first two series and The Woman Called Fujiko Mine)
34. Case Closed
33. Justice League/Unlimited
32. Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes
31. Drawn Together
30. Harvey Birdman, Attorney At Law
29. Batman: The Animated Series
28. Spongebob Squarepants (seasons 1-5)
27. Batman: The Brave and the Bold
26. The Venture Bros.

50 seems like a lot, but I didn't have to reach for any of them. I really do love that many cartoons immensely, and honestly, there's even more I like that I didn't list here. Guess I'm not so great at being selective, eh?  :il_hahaha:

2. King Of The Hill
3. Batman: The Brave & The Bold
4. Cowboy Bebop
5. Yu Yu Hakusho
6. Spectacular Spider-Man
7. Martian Successor Nadesico
8. Monster
9. Gargoyles
10. DuckTales

Still some missing, though. Just to add, the gaps between the ones next to each other isn't all that big.

10- Cowboy Bebop
9- Yu Yu Hakusho
8- Neon Genesis Evangelion
7- Spectacular Spider-Man
6- Gargoyles
5- Daria
4- Batman: The Animated Series
3- King of the Hill
2- Archer
1- Ed, Edd n' Eddy

EEnE is still my go-to toon of choice, but the only one of its kind that I REALLY seem to come back to. I also haven't been too interested in anime lately, which is why I tuckered those few together in the tail-end. Simpsons was nearly on the list too.

I debated between a few for number 10. Though the rest were all natural picks for me my top 3 especially are pretty rock solid.

I do wish I could think of an idea for KOTH feature of some kind. That's a hard one to peg down, but it wouldn't really work the same as my TB&TB series does. I do think it deserves something, though.

Fuck! You know what movie I forgot to rank among my favorites? The Adventures of Tintin.

Granted that, I'm long overdue for a re-watching of that film, and since it happens to be on Netflix, I'll hit it up soon. If it's at least as entertaining on a re-watch as it was for me the first time, then I think it may just end up bumping Redline off of my top 10 list.

I was randomly looking at old threads over on ToonZone and came across this:

Quote from: Cartoon X on 11-13-20091. One Piece- Great characters, epic battles, a perfect mix of comedy and action, and great pacing. Heck, even its Fillers are good!
2. Looney Tunes- No words can describe how great it is.
3. King of the Hill- One of the most underestimated cartoons of all time. KOTH is a great show with funny characters and some great story arcs.
4. SGT. Frog- I'm addicted to it! It's so funny you can't stop watching! The dub might add some unnecessary jokes at times but.. too funny!
5. Bo^7- I really was into it for the first 35 episodes, but kinda lost interest at Halekulani. Still, it is one of the funniest anime's of all time!
6. The Simpsons- Even if it has lost some of its charm, The Simpsons continues to be funny (or at least it tries) and no one can deny how great it was in the Golden age!
7. American Dad- A great comedy that has never failed to entertain me.
8. Yu Yu Hakusho-The greatest fighting anime there evere was.
9. Powerpuff Girls- I like the villans primarily, especially Mojo and Him.
10. Case Closed- I can never figure out who the murderer is, and its just a great show overall.

It's funny how much and how little opinions can change.  Nowadays, Sgt. Frog would barely make my top 65, The Powerpuff Girls my top 50, and Case Closed my top 40, and One Piece is my top 20. The other stuff is still in my top ten, though, so I guess I am somewhat consistent after all. But Sgt. Frog over Bobobo and my fourth favorite cartoon? It's been a looong four years.  :il_hahaha:

So I think my favorite cartoon blocks were

1- Cartoon Cartoon Fridays (peak years- probably 2000-mid 2002)
2- Toonami )morseo the classic era- peak years probably being 2001-2004 ish)
3- Disney Aftenoon (peak years- 1990-1991, 1993-1995)
4- Kids WB! in the 90's

And that might be it. ;)

Cool idea! Those are some great choices. My personal favorites are:

5. Kids WB! (mid-2000's - 2002-2006)

I watched Kids WB! only in the mid-2000's, but at that age I enjoyed quite a lot of it. I loved watching Pokemon, Yu-Gi-OH!, Jackie Chan Adventures, and X-Men Evolution, Xiaolin Showdown, and Megaman NT Warrior on weekdays AND early saturday mornings. I mean...the only two of those shows I actually still like are Jackie and X-men (well, I'll always be able to watch the first 5 seasons of Pokemon out of nostalgia...), but still, as a kid, those were some fun hours to pass the time with, and the bumpers were funny and creative (I loved the yu-gi-oh card game they did one time between various characters from their shows. Seeing Charizard playing yu-gi-oh was amazing). I have lots of recordings of the block from that era on many vhs tapes, and one of these days, I might try and capture that footage digitally and share them.

4. Fridays (peaks years - 2003- early 2006)

While I was sad to see CCF go at the time, I enjoyed Fridays. Tommy and Tara were fun hosts, the puppets were hilarious, and they kept every week fun to watch even when the shows were only reruns or mediocre. I have fond memories watching many Foster's and Duck Dodgers episodes on the block, as well as seeing Spirited Away for the first time there. It is to my everlasting chagrin I didn't tune in the night they premiered the first episode of Bobobo on the network before it's official premiere on Toonami the next day, but alas. I honestly have about as much nostalgia fro Fridays as I do Cartoon Cartoon Fridays, and if nothing else, it's intro was amazing. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-a6mxNvfsM4)

3. Cartoon Cartoon Fridays

I loved how a different CN character hosted the block each week, and the fact the shows were awesome helped make Fridays nights a real event for me back when I was a kid. My favorite moments were probably the night the Mayor hosted and talked about walkie-talkies, and the night Mojo took over...only to have to co-host it with Blossom and Courage. "Looks like there's a scheduling conflict. Who did the schedule anyway?" "I think Bravo." - classic. I wish CN would do this something like this again. Instead we have Pizza Steve and Mr. Gus. I like those characters just fine, but they don't run no CCF, I tell you what.

2. Toonami (2005-2007)

I didn't start watching Toonami regularly until 2007. The anime that got me into anime was Dragon Ball GT (yes, I know, but cut me some slack I was 9!), and I cried for two days when the last episode aired 'cause I was completely not expecting it (I had only started watching the show regularly with #61, how was I supposed to know it would end with #64?). Anyway, I learned about "The Lost Episodes" and was overjoyed. That's when I started paying attention to the rest of the block as well. I was already watching Megas XLR, Justice League/Unlimited, and Teen Titans outside the block, so it didn't take much for me to tune into them on saturdays too, and I found Duel Masters amusing (who couldn't with that gag dub?). I saw the promos for Zatch Bell! and so when it premiered I checked it out and really got into it. After that, I slowly came to watch most of the block and would do so until things really turned bad in 2007, where the only shows I watched were DBZ reruns, FUNi One Piece, and, of course, Bobobo.

I think I have fonder memories of Jetstream. It was really cool to me that they were premiering new shows online, in addition to streaming older and current titles, and I watched and rewatched shows on Jetstream very frequently. I have fond memories of waiting for the new episodes to update every Tuesday, chowing down on some fast-food we picked up from BK or somewhere while watching MAR or Hikaru no Go. I fondly remember the short-lived dub of Eyeshield 21 that premiered on there, and when they uploaded two DBZ episodes every weekday for weeks until they got to the end of the Namek arc, finally seeing the end of the Millennium Mamodo arc of Zatch Bell! (since the series went off air before it finished), watching premiere episodes of Megaman Starforce (I might dislike NT Warrior nowadays, but I still love Starforce. I wish they dubbed it fully, and gave it a home video release...),  being able to rewatch Megas XLR, Samurai Jack, Genndy Clone Wars, Dragon Ball, and of course, Bobobo, which I especially appreciated since CN NEVER reran any episodes of that series when it was running nor did it rerun when ended, so I finally had the chance to see the episodes I missed and rewatch old favorites. I must have rewatched episodes 6, 16, 21, 22, 23, 25, 26, 27, 29, and 30 in particular each a score or more of times.

While not every Jetstream-exclusive show holds up for me, Hikaru no Go, Megaman Star Force, the remainder of dubbed Zatch Bell, and the streams of older great shows still make me wistful for it when I think of Toonami. That said, I love Toonami the tv block a lot. Most of it is retroactive, though, for the promos, intros, and shows I didn't ever actually see when they aired them but really think are neat and cool and wish I did. As for current Toonami, I think the effort they put into it is applaudable and I love their bumps, music videos, and trailers, so I'm fond of it even though few of the shows actually appeal to me and I barely watch it. Still, Toonami brought me a lot of great memories, some of those memories happen to not hold up to my present tastes, but even so it was responsible for getting me into anime, and I wouldn't be posting here if I never watched Dragon Ball. Still, there's one block I'm still much more fond of...

1. FUNimation Channel on Colours TV

I'm not going to say it was perfect, but it was a far better programming block than Toonami was back i watched them both (re: 2005-2008), since most of what they aired actually hold up! Just look at their schedule at it's peak:

Weekdays:

8:00 - Kodocha - Hilarious but capable of sweet drama as well. A fun show that I always got a kick out of, though my memory of it is hazy nowadays. A priority on my re-watch list.
8:30 - Fruits Basket - What is there to say? A well-crafted excellent romance and drama series.
9:00 - Case Closed - Incredibly entertaining and addicting mystery and detective series. There's a reason why this is still running in Japan, y'know.
9:30 - Spiral - Fun mystery and action show at the end of the day, even if it didn't have a good ending. Honestly my memory of it is in the same boat as Kodocha, so I'll need ot re-watch it some day.
10:00 - Dragon Ball - Classic, and as a HUGE DB fan I was ecstatic to be able to watch it every weekday at a good time like this.
10:30 - Yu Yu Hakusho - I never saw the show on Toonami, so it was Colors that introduced me to it. The first episode I watched was "Genbu the Stone Beast," and immediately I was hooked. The rest is history.
11:00 - Slayers - One of the best adventure anime ever created. It's a shame Colors never aired NEXT or TRY, but the original is a fucking blast and has limitless rerun value alone as it is. A definite classic I'm glad I was exposed to early on when I was starting to become a "fan" of anime.
11:30 - Negima - Okay...this show wasn't good, but hey those first 3.5/4 hours is still a pretty damn great lineup.

Weekends - Okay, I never watched much of the saturday lineup because of Toonami and whatnot, but I've heard good things about Baki, Kiddy Grade, and Blue Gender, and you can't go wrong with Lupin specials/movies.

8:00 - Movies, most commonly FUNi's Lupin the Third ones
10:00 - Baki the Grappler
10:30 - Kiddy Grade
11:00 - Blue Gender
11:30 - Tenchi Muyo GXP

I loved the weekday lineup. How diverse it was! A goofy comedy, a less goofy drama, two mystery series, two pure-fun adventure series, and an ass-kicking battle shonen...that was 3.5 hours of pure gold right there. And it was on every weekday. That was amazing. I didn't care that the shows reran so many times nor did the long runners air past the first 50 or so episodes (it's not like I could actually watch it everyday, anyways), it was a pleasure to watch whenever I sat down and I looked forward to it whenever I could watch it. The trailers and bumpers let out an aura of coolness that said (yes, you are watching this tonight, and it will be awesome), and oh my god do I have so many fond memories of all the trailers for FUNimation shows they played on there:  Black Cat, Galaxy Railways, Yu Yu Hakusho, FMA Conqueror of Shamballa, Mr. Stain, and so many others, lest I not forget that Radon warning commercial, those Star Wars video game commercials, and the He-Man dvd set commercials. Of all the programming blocks I watched as a kid, the FUNimation Channel has left me with the most fond memories, and the fact it introduced me to three of my favorite anime, two more I really enjoy, and aired one of my favorite animes at the time more than makes me fond of it after all these years.

Hmm...looking back, it's been six months since I last posted my favorite cartoon list, and it's changed a fair bit. Might as well update. I'm not divorcing anime from the list, so here's my top 20 animated series as of right now. (EDITED June 8th 2014)

1. South Park
2. Ashita no Joe 2
3. Maison Ikkoku
4. King of the Hill
5. American Dad
6. Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo
7. Trigun
8. The Simpsons
9. The Spectacular Spider-Man
10. Gargoyles
11. Futurama
12. Dragon Ball
13. Yu Yu Hakusho
14. Urusei Yatsura
15. Ranma 1/2
16. Batman: The Brave and the Bold
17. Batman: The Animated Series
18. Home Movies
19. Daria
20. Cowboy Bebop

For comparison, here's my list from six months back.

Quote15. Cowboy Bebop
14. Ranma 1/2
13. The Boondocks
12. One Piece
11. Monster
10. Yu Yu Hakusho
9. Dragonball
8. Maison Ikkoku
7. Futurama
6. American Dad
5. King of the Hill
4. The Simpsons
3. Trigun
2. Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo
1. South Park

SP stays the same, of course, a lot of the stuff remains, but has moved around a bit. Gargoyles has gone way up from where it was previously, as the more I rewatch episodes and think about it, the more I find myself engrossed with it. I also finally finished Spectacular Spider-Man and suffice to say I damn loved it. Maison Ikkoku is yet another show that I'm increasingly more enamored with the more I rewatch episodes and reflect on it, and while Trigun is the same, I do think I like those other 8 series more than it if I were to compare. Similar deal with AD and Futurama (though my attachment to all these shows are neck in neck close honestly). AnJ2 has cemented its high place for many well-deserved reasons and is my favorite story I've seen in anime/manga to date. I've spoken much about why I love the UY anime, so I don't need to explain it's inclusion here now either. Monster and One Piece went out because the Monster anime is just a carbon-copy of the manga, so I took it out of my top ten anime list, and my opinion on the One Piece anime has lowered upon reflection of it's uneven quality past episode 206, so that's out.

Welp, that's my updated list. Wonder how it'll look in another six months. Probably'll be completely different, considering how inconsistent I am.  :P

I miss Baki The Grappler on Colours TV.

Adding to Avaitor's list but in no order, I'd say [as] when I believe they had FMA, Big, Lupin and Case Closed on one lineup. Such a great amount of variety. Only one of those shows is in my top 5 but I love the diversity.

That's a cool list, CartoonX! I never got to experience the Funimation channel, but that looks like a nice, diverse lineup, like Toonami at its peak.

I did still watch the later Kids WB! block myself as well. I don't think I really stopped watching until I grew tired of Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh!, around 2003-ish, actually. But I remember not being as hot on Fox Kids, probably because I was a little too young to have seen or remembered it at its peak. I definitely did watch Power Rangers, but I associate Batman, Tiny Toons, and Animaniacs more with their runs on other networks or video tapes as opposed to Fox. So my Saturday morning recollections go back to Kids WB! I always did change over to Fox when Digimon was on, though.

I also watched Fridays, which was... okay. Tommy, Tara, and the other lady were okay hosts, but I mostly watched for the shows. Which is obviously why I like these lineups so much, but I still give credit to CCF for its cartoon hosts. I also just usually preferred the CCF lineup. With Fridays I'd bow out when they'd put on Puffy or Atomic Betty or Lazlo, but with CCF, I sat through the whole thing, even KND. The only time I turned the TV is when they'd show the premieres that just aired again. Everything else was mandatory to me, including the repeats.

I didn't watch much of Fox Kids either, actually. By the time I was watching Kids WB, Fox Kids was already past it's prime I think, and not many of the shows really grabbed me over watching Kids WB instead. I did like Kirby, Right Back At Ya! I suppose, though I'm not sure if that show'd hold up for me know.

And yeah, the Fridays lineup was no where near as good as Cartoon Cartoon Fridays'. I honestly can't say I think it'd hold up for me if I were to watch it now, since I don't care much for the CN shows from the 2004-2008 era these days (with the exception of Duck Dodgers and Billy and Mandy, but the latter series was around albeit as Grim and Evil since 2001 anyway). Still, as a kid I enjoyed it and it left me with some good memories, which is why I'm still fond of it. But, even then, I don't think I watched through the whole block nearly as much as I did CCF, and that's probably because I liked the shows CCF aired a lot more to be willing to watch reruns (plus, I was always excited to see which one of my favorite characters would be hosting each week  :D ).

Well, I think how much you like a show compared to another show is gaugeable in how much you revisit it, find yourself thinking about it, how much you get out of it, etc. In those respects, I find it fairly easy to compare the anime and western cartoons and the comedy and action series I like  and put together a list, though admittedly, my problem is that my opinions of a lot of shows swing back and forth all the time, and I can go into periods of obsession and periods of avoidance depending on different factors, which is why my lists sometimes change radically in such short amounts of time. That's why I'm trying to limit myself to only top 10's or 15's, since anything beyond that gets too volatile, and I like so many shows and movies and stuff that it gets to a point where it's meaningless to try and list them all.

Fridays was definitely better than Fried Dynamite. I actually did watch that shit for Eds, Grim, and Foster's (and depending on the episode, Class of 3000. Yes, I liked it. Kind of), but wow, the wraparounds were awful, and it wasn't worth sitting around for Lazlo and Gym Partner.

It kind of sucks that Nick didn't have a decently long-running, solid cartoon block. I know that when their first few Nicktoons started out, they aired together, but I don't believe that was meant to be anything special. I do remember a Friday night block that was supposed to compete with CCF in the early 00's, but that was mostly KC junk that I wasn't hot on to begin with.

And I know that I'm cheating with the Disney Afternoon, since I was too young to really remember seeing it (I wasn't even alive for the first season of it, which is one of my favorites!), but it just looks like a great block and I like a lot of the shows, so I counted it.

Oh god, I hated Fried Dynamite. It's bumps were obnoxious. I don't think I watched it much, outside of the Cartoon Network Invaded event. I pretty much just stuck with FUNi until that block ended in May 2008.

As for Nick, I remember Friday Night Nicktoons, but that wasn't very special in terms of packaging. After that, I remember finding U-Pick Live! pretty fun, but that wasn't exclusively a cartoon block.

I never saw any of the Disney Afternoon, so even though I enjoy many of the shows that aired on it and came out on it, I couldn't really consider it a favorite block of mine. I'm sorry I missed out, since it certainly must have been a fun experience.

I barely remember the first season (and I mean barely) but I remember it being fairly similar to the following few seasons (sans Gummi Bears, of course) so it was great.

Well I mean of 4 shows put together, the 1990-1991 season looks like a particularly strong lineup. So does 91-92, and 94-95. Really, I would've liked it all until the mid 90's hit, but I might've skipped out on Rescue Rangers or Aladdin depending on the episodes that were on.

Oh, and Schnookums and Meat too. ;)

Good lists, guys. I'll try to post mine as well (in the Favorites thread).

1. Fantasia
2. Beauty and the Beast
3. The Lion King
4. Toy Story Trilogy (All these movies would go on this list, and probably all back to back, so I'm grouping them as to avoid cluttering.)
5. Pinocchio
6. Grave of the Fireflies
7. Bambi
8. Up
9. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
10. WALL-E

Clearly a Disney fan.

I'm not sure if I could properly make a list, but #1 for me would definitely be Up. Everything I enjoy about great storytelling is in that one and, in my opinion, is Pixar's peak so far.

Pirates Of The Dark Water was dry (meaning it was BORING) while Swat Kats is still great. SK doesn't have to have the same quality as Batman or Gargoyles quality to be good.

7. Wolverine & The X-Men
6. Superman
5. Batman The Brave & The Bold
4. Batman Beyond
3. Legion Of Superheroes
2. Justice League
1. Batman TAS
Updated list:

11. Teen Titans
10. Static Shock
9. Wolverine & The X-Men
8. Young Justice
7. Green Lantern
6. Avengers EMH
5. Batman Beyond
4. Batman The Brave & The Bold
3. Legion Of Superheroes
2. Justice League
1. Batman TAS

I had to take down Superman since it's been WAY too long since I regularly watched the show. I added in YJ, GL and Avengers, since I watched much, if not all of them, this year. I also added Static and TT. I actually don't love Avengers as much as everyone else here but it's clearly better than Wolvie, YJ and GL. I put some thought into placing WATX and YJ but I remember YJ having more fun episodes. Green Lantern could have possibly beat Avengers if Season 2 wasn't a bit flat and predictable. Again, Season 1's unpredictability made it great. I didn't even have a clue that Razer would join the team. I need to rewatched all of BB (only missed like one episode but watching it all in order would help)...hell all of the top 5, without needing to waste time listing them. I've missed episodes from all and I plan on marathoning through all of them. I wish they would put LOSH on Netflix already...and the rest of the episodes for YJ and GL. I also need to watch all of Superman.

If we're talking just superhero cartoons, here, then this is my list:

8. Superman: The Animated Series
7. Green Lantern: The Animated Series
6. Batman Beyond
5. Justice League/JLU
4. Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes
3. Batman: The Animated Series
2. Batman: The Brave and the Bold
1. The Spectacular Spider-Man

Mine would be:

10. Young Justice
9. Green Lantern: The Animated Series
8. Beware the Batman
7. Superman: The Animated Series
6. Batman Beyond
5. Justice League/JLU
4. Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes
3. Batman: The Animated Series
2. Batman: The Brave and the Bold
1. The Spectacular Spider-Man

I haven't seen Legion of Superheroes, X-Men: Evolution, Wolverine and the X-Men, or Static Shock in a long time, so I don't know how I'd feel about them now. Teen Titans I'm hit and miss with these days, but I still like it for the most part. I put Young Justice on here just to round the list to ten series, but I do actually like it overall, even if the second season was too over-stuffed for it's own good.

3. Batman: The Animated Series

Those are the ones I really like.

I should probably get around to Green Lantern eventually.

1- The Spectacular Spider-Man
2- Batman: The Animated Series
3- Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes
4- Justice League
5- Batman: The Brave & the Bold
6- Superman: The Animated Series
7- Batman Beyond
8- Green Lantern: TAS
9- X-Men: Evolution
10- Wolverine & the X-Men

I should definitely watch some B&TB again, though. I honestly haven't seen any of it since it ended. And it's funny, I used to prefer Beyond to Supes, but I really watch the latter more.
Title: Re: Your Top Favorite Animated Shows

I was re-watching some Beyond and I still don't get the complaints around season 2. Max isn't that annoying, the plots center around more than just a handful of villains, and we get to see more of the world. Bringing Blight back would have been a waste. He went out like Shishio and that's where he should have stayed.

I like all three X-Men series (the 90s one basically on nostalgia), but I don't think any of them are great. It's sort of annoying though, because they have the potential to be but get pulled back by something or the other.

I saw a decent amount of episodes of Static Shock on Disney (oh, the irony) a few years ago, I believe. I felt the same about it like I did when they stopped showing it after its last episode.

I'm not going to bother with X-Men Evolution any time soon. The first season is probably the most boring superhero cartoon show season ever. Almost painful.

I thought Spark already watched GL. I swear he was one of the guys who recommended it to me.

Max isn't annoying. Well a little bit when she insists on tagging along with Terry just because but that's it. I didn't see the show in awhile and kind of forgot the characters so assumed Max was some annoying guy (?!) in a season I haven't watched and was perplexed when I realized it was just her. People need to aim that hate at Katara. :bleh:

And good, shadow knows what's the best.

I think what bothers me about all the X-Men show is that they always get convoluted. Like they have to throw in every famous plot and X-Man/villain and cram them in every nook and cranny.

I realize the X-Men have a long and storied history, but look at Earth's Mightiest Heroes-- they didn't have to reference every single thing about The Avengers' history. No, they focused on a core cast and went the whole nine yards. If they would do the same with X-Men, it would easily be something great. But of course, we all know the sorry state Marvel Animation is in now, so I doubt it will ever happen.

Good point, but at least they were trying for quality at one point. I don't even think there's anyone working on Ultimate Spider-Man who even likes the show.

It's annoying to me because X-Men deserve their own EMH or BTAS, and it's just not going to happen.

I still maintain that W&TXM had the potential for greatness if the second season got made and fixed most of the problems from the first. Granted, Apocalypse was supposed to be a big part of it, but good writers have done better things with bad villains before.

But obviously, that didn't happen. Instead, Jeph Loeb happened.
Title: Re: Your Top Favorite Animated Shows
Post by: Spark Of Spirit on June 23, 2014, 08:14:09 PM
I think my biggest problem with Wolverine was that it started in mid-universe and expected everyone to know what was going on. I know starting from the beginning can be boring, but shows like TSSM and Batman Beyond (starting with Terry, I mean) show that it can be done.

Also didn't like Cyclops in that show. Say what you will about Evo, but I think he was the one character the show nailed perfectly. You can make a boy scout interesting, you just need good writing.

Hence, my pessimism.

I remember watching Earth Mover and wondering exactly how this season was lighter or less serious in tone.

Of all the DCAU shows, I think it's probably the most consistent.

It was an accident. The father was just stewing in his hatred for so long that he probably eventually came to believe he killed him on purpose. Like Terry said, he was just a ghost- sort of a reference to what Bruce said about Mr. Freeze.

9- Rocko's Modern Life
8- Yu Yu Hakusho
7- Batman: The Animated Series

9- Trigun
8- The Spectacular Spider-Man
7- The Simpsons
6- Gargoyles
5 - American Dad!
4- Maison Ikkoku
3- Ashita no Joe 2
2- King of the Hill
1- South Park

Quote from: Avaitor on August 09, 2014, 01:47:48 PM10- Dexter's Laboratory/Johnny Bravo/The Powerpuff Girls/Sheep in the Big City (I can never choose between them!)

I love all of those, and while it's true that DL, JB, and PPG went downhill in their later seasons, I still think that their prime seasons more than make up for the slack. I need to re-watch Sheep one of these days, though, but in its place I'd probably add Courage, myself.

Quote9- Rocko's Modern Life

Another show that I need to re-watch.

Quote8- Yu Yu Hakusho

As the only anime on your list, I'm glad to see that it's this one. I love this show in a way that it doesn't even matter to me that it's an anime. It's just a great cartoon, and the country of origin doesn't matter when a show is this good, IMO. ;)

Quote7- Batman: The Animated Series

Classic. I may prefer TBATB, but you'll never see me denying this show as one of the all-time greats.

Quote6- The Spectacular Spider-Man

Yeah, I think we pretty much both agree that this is the best superhero cartoon to date.

Quote5- Gargoyles

God I love this show to death. If I wasn't so biased, it'd probably be my favorite cartoon ever, but since I am, YYH is, but this is still ranked as my 2nd favorite (or sometimes 3rd, after Ashita no Joe 2, which I'm also hugely biased for), and it thoroughly stands the test of time.

Quote4- Archer

I only saw the first 2 seasons so far, but it's really grown on me. I could see it being right up there with South Park and Futurama for me when I watch more of it.

Quote3- King of the Hill

I need to watch more of this show as well. Sometimes I let on that I don't really care for it just to puss off Desensitized (for kicks), in case anyone was taking me too seriously, but I do honestly enjoy what I've seen of it.

Quote2- Daria

The only show on your list that I haven't seen any of. I need to change that, eventually.

Quote1- Ed, Edd n' Eddy

A classic. Also, I neglected to mention it, but I finally saw the movie about a year and a half ago, and I thought it was pretty fucking awesome. It felt like an episode of the show on steroids, which if you've ever seen the show is damn insane to comprehend, but it really worked out in a great way. I need to re-watch the show and the movie, eventually.

I haven't watched a whole lot of Sheep in the past bunch of years, but the one or two episodes I find online every once in a blue moon make me fall in love with it all over again. That's a show that REALLY needs a release stat!

Can't do lists in general, because plenty of the shows I like are for different reasons from each other. For instance, I think Fate/Zero and Archer are fine shows, but they're two completely different genres. Same with Blake & Mortimer and Bob's Burgers.

I can combine my lists because I don't really see them as objective or anything like that. I just put them in order of how much I enjoy them overall. I guess my current one would be:

1. Archer
2. Cowboy Bebop
3. Spectacular Spider-Man
4. Gurren Lagann
5. Harvey Birdman: Attorney At Law
6. Baccano!
7. Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid
8. Courage the Cowardly Dog

10. Ed Edd n Eddy

Look, my list is less skewed toward anime this time!

Your list reminds me that I should try to keep up with Gurren Lagann when Toonami starts it this week. I'm not going to have a DVR at my place, but I'll probably be up around that time anyway.

It's the only show on your list that I don't currently like. Or really, love.

I can combine my lists because I don't really see them as objective or anything like that. I just put them in order of how much I enjoy them overall.
Great list. I should rewatch Gurren Lagann when Toonami starts airing it next week, and finally get around to watching FMP! and Higurashi sometime too.

Your list reminds me that I should try to keep up with Gurren Lagann when Toonami starts it this week. I'm not going to have a DVR at my place, but I'll probably be up around that time anyway.

It's the only show on your list that I don't currently like. Or really, love.
:joy: :joy:

I didn't like Gurren Lagann when it first came out, but after rewatching it recently it's grown on me so much. Definitely give it a(nother?) chance when it comes to Toonami! Just keep in mind that the dub isn't the best. It's not bad or anything, but some of the voices can be kind of annoying IMO.

It must be on everyone's list.

Mine, in no particular order:  (though limiting to American series)
-Dr. Katz
-King of the Hill
-Simpsons (classic era)
-Tiny Toons (and, to a lesser extent, Animaniacs)
-Space Ghost: Coast to Coast
-Family Guy (seasons 1-4 mostly)
-Batman: The Animated Series
-Avatar (and, by extension, Korra)
-Ren & Stimpy
-Rocko's Modern Life
-Duckman
-Futurama
-Clerks: TAS
-The Critic
Title: Re: Your Top Favorite Animated Shows

I doubt my list has changed much, and I'm not going back to look, but...

Gargoyles
Spectacular Spider-Man
Batman: TAS
The Venture Bros
Avatar: The Last Airbender (Not Korra!)
Cowboy Bebop
Pinky and the Brain
Futurama
Berserk
Darkwing Duck
ExoSquad
Daria
South Park
Harvey Birdman
Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes (first season and a half only)
Title: Re: Your Top Favorite Animated Shows

If I was to add classics, my list would probably look like this

10- The Spectacular Spider-Man
9- Jonny Quest
8- Daria
7- Gargoyles
6- Archer
5- Rocky and His Friends/The Bullwinkle Show
4- King of the Hill
3- Ed, Edd n' Eddy
2- MGM's animated work
1- Looney Tunes

The toughest part was deciding on my top two, honestly. But I really do think that I'm more of a comedy person overall, as much as I love a great action show.

I'm kind of surprised that you didn't go with ATLA for your letter A entry.

To be honest, quite a few of my choices are more like shows that I casually enjoy rather than love, and some I haven't even seen since my childhood.

Also, your list reminds me that I still need to get around to ExoSquad one of these days.

I liked the second half of season 2 despite it not being as good as what came before it. I was still very entertained for the most part. On top of that, I find that the rest of the show is easy to jump into and enjoy at any time.

Avatar is more designed to be watched from beginning to end, making for more of a commitment to re-watch it, and the first season was personally a bit of a slog for me. I didn't really become a fan until season 2, though for what it's worth it is a great show. I'm not denying that.

I still like book 1 more than most people but i know it's an unpopular view.

I also think the show's best episodes can be rewatched in any order (except maybe multiparters) because the heroes usually go on interesting adventures within an episode and/or one episode flashbacks happen. i can watch zuko alone, the avatar & the firelord, lake laogai and the blind bandit in any order.

I didn't like the second half of the second season at all, but I know about Loeb's executive meddling and micro-managing so I refuse to hold it against what Josh, Chris, and Frank did for the first season and a half. As far as I'm concerned that's like holding "The Goliath Chronicles" against the first two seasons of "Gargoyles".

I did recommend doing it that way, but I do think you should still watch the UY anime. It's just as great as the manga, and actually sometimes better, but it's not quite as consistent. I've been thinking about elaborating more on my thoughts on the anime in comparison to the manga sometime soon.

Understandable. I do need to give the show a rewatch. It doesn't really have anything that I hate and I wouldn't argue with anyone who would say that it has the best cast out of any animated series (or at least best protagonist team in one), I just didn't like it overall as much as most here.

Wow, great list man! I'm really glad to see you love Ashita no Joe, Mushi-shi, Paranoia Agent, Steven Universe, Gankutsuou, and Revolutionary Girl Utena so much, among others. I would have never figured the latter was your favorite animated series either, but it's definitely a damn great show. Though I'm surprised LOGH is fairly low on your list, as I would have expected it in your top ten considering the praise you've given it on the board before. :D

As for LOGH's relatively low placement? You may chalk it up to a certain change in taste. Though I still love it, obviously. Otherwise, it wouldn't be on the list.

On a side-note: Why isn't there any good Ashita no Joe clips on YouTube? Seriously, all the clips I could find were either AMVs or extremely spoiler-heavy.

Awesome list! Some great titles that I love as well, and plenty that I still need to get around to.

It's also nice to see some love for Ashita no Joe. While I personally prefer both the manga and sequel anime to the first, it is still a very good adaptation of the source matetial that's well worth watching.

Basing my list off of what I've seen recently again, my new Top Cartoons List:

10. Wolverine And The X-Men
9. Mike Tyson Mysteries
8. Futurama
7. King Of The Hill
6. Venture Bros.
5. Korra (I haven't seen Book 4 yet, except for like 2 episodes)
4. Avengers
3. Green Lantern
2. Regular Show
1. Batman The Brave & The Bold

Top Ten Anime list:

10. Fate/Zero
9. Hellsing Ultimate
8. One Piece
7. DBZ Kai
6. JoJo
5. Fist Of The Northstar
4. Hunter X Hunter 2011
3. Hunter X Hunter '99
2. Yu yu Hakusho
1. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

I originally made this post to put the two lists together in sequential order (anime, cartoon, anime) but decided against that. I just can't combine the lists. I got to say that I like the anime list A LOT more than I do my current cartoon list.

1999, 2011, Brotherhood, Yu yu Hakusho, Fist Of The Northstar

If I was to add classics, my list would probably look like this

10- The Spectacular Spider-Man
9- Jonny Quest
8- Daria
7- Gargoyles
6- Archer
5- Rocky and His Friends/The Bullwinkle Show
4- King of the Hill
3- Ed, Edd n' Eddy
2- MGM's animated work
1- Looney Tunes

The toughest part was deciding on my top two, honestly. But I really do think that I'm more of a comedy person overall, as much as I love a great action show.
More or less.

Great lists, everyone.

As for me, much like Desensitized, my favorites haven't really changed very much since the last time I posted any lists, mostly because I haven't watched many new shows since then, TBH.

Also, despite your recent appreciation for it, I'm surprised to see that OP made your list. Have you been watching the early episodes online, by any chance (I'm pretty sure that they are up on CR or Hulu)?

I'm also glad to see that you gave HXH '99 some love. I like 2011 just fine, but feel that '99 had the superior direction.

I have not seen any episodes outside of literally anything I've seen on CN or 4Kids, once I think about it, believe it or not. In fact, I've seen about 10 episodes on CN, even less than that fully but the combination of my low expectations being shattered by all the things I've already said I loved about One Piece, the bottom half of my anime list being a revolving door, even if I do really like that half and the fact that I've watched so little shows recently and this being a list about show I've watched (otherwise Champloo, Heat Guy J, Outlaw Star and 2003 Fullmetal would be on there) ..recently, that totaled up into One Piece being in my top 10 anything for the first time ever.

One Piece is on CR and I'll start in some day. Maybe after I'm down with JoJo, Fate/Zero and Parasyte. Maybe before Parasyte.

And yes, I love me some 1999. Such a great anime series. The late '90s were great for anime.

Well, SD-era One Piece is a good show, minus the filler.

After that, the manga is probably the best way to go, though it's probably more convenient to legally watch the anime for free.

Also, just for my opinion on the various DB anime:

Dragon Ball > Dragon Ball Z Kai > Dragon Ball Z > Dragon Ball Z Kai (Majin Buu Saga) >>>>>>>> Dragon Ball GT

Yeah I know how reviled and despised they are, but once you accept their MANY flaws they're okay. Though I will admit I dropped Naruto when it was in filler mode. And I did not like one bit some of the well...spoilery stuff in Naruto. Bleach, when you accept that it doesn't have much of a story to tell, and is just about the fights is pretty decent. Though YMMV on how much you like the action.
One Piece is flawless though. Just putting it out there.
Title: Re: Your Top Favorite Animated Shows

Well, you certainly shouldn't feel ashamed to like what you like. It's no secret that I used to be a fan of both series when they were at their best. It's just that my tastes changed over time, and their best no longer really appealed to me, and after a certain point both series got ridiculously stupid.

That said, I'd never look down on anyone else for enjoying them. After all, I've liked some admittedly stupid stuff, myself (I mean, HXH can get monumentally stupid at times, as much as I still love it).

As for One Piece, by definition it can't be flawless because Fishman Island exists. Pre-time-skip One Piece is still legit good, though. After that, it's a mixed bag.

Recently, the Paley Center compiled a list of whom a collective group of random people consider to be the 30 funniest cartoon characters ever, and since it sucks, I won't share it (heads up- this aired on Fox). Instead, I felt like compiling my own list of the same.

This is entirely personal, and while this isn't a list of my favorite cartoon characters, it might as well be. Just add a few anime and Gargoyles characters, and bam.

30- General Specific and Private Public
29- Dexter's Dad
28- Jeff (Clarence)
27- Homer Simpson
26- Dale Gribble
25- Quick Draw McGraw
24- Ed and Bev Bighead
23- Screwy Squirrel
22- Lana Kane
21- Dudley Do-Right
20- Johnny 2x4
19- Krusty the Clown
18- Summer Smith
17- Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote
16- Tom and Jerry
15- Mojo Jojo
14- Bill Dauterive
13- Foghorn Leghorn
12- Fred Flintatone
11- Yzma and Kronk
10- Rick Sanchez
9- Rolf
8- Sylvester
7- Sterling Archer
6- The Wolf (MGM)
5- Rocket J. Squirrel and Bullwinkle J. Moose
4- Dr. Algernop Krieger
3- Ed, Double D, and Eddy
2- Bugs Bunny
1- Daffy Duck

Looking over that list, there are a few characters that I can't believe I missed, like Coach McGuirk and Elmer Fudd. And I also skipped over a few characters that I really like, because they're not as funny. For example, I'm actually a bigger fan of Barney than Fred, but Fred's superiority complex and uncontrollable anger is where The Flintstones' laughs come from.

But that top 5 is pretty definite for me.

There's a thread on tz asking about your favorite eras for TV channels in regards to animation, and I shared these choices.

Cartoon Network from 1999-2004- The CCF era

I like a lot more of Hanna-Barbera's works than many people my age do, but even I could easily get tired of some of their best works, at least if that's the only thing the channel was showing. But if Cartoon Network's original series couldn't cut the bread, then that wouldn't even matter, huh?

Thankfully, CN knocked it out of the park with their first few originals, as Dexter's Lab, Johnny Bravo, and Cow & Chicken won me over instantly as I started to tune into the network. I was already a fan of what they had to offer when The Powerpuff Girls aired, which only strengthened my dedication to the channel. By the time Ed, Edd n' Eddy eased out of its early awkward phase and started to become one of the great, I was a lifelong devotee of what Cartoon Network offered.

So when an entire block to their winning originals aired, I knew that I had something to look forward to every week, as a grab-all of some of the best things modern animation could be responsible for. A good half dozen or more series would premiere on this block before it molded into the Fridays lineup. Some great, others not so much, and we got a lot of pilot shorts to examine and even the brief appearance of Samurai Jack repeats.

But besides the winning originals, there was a lot to offer from Cartoon Network's schedule. As more hit originals were being made and taking over screentime, we were losing more older series, but a lot of the best still aired handsomely. You could just as easily see The Flintstones on primetime along with something Johnny Bravo, which is crazy to believe now. This is also when the merging of Time Warner allowed for the pre and post-48 Looney Tunes to air together, as they always should. And Toonami was similarly at the height of its power, airing great shonen series such as Dragon Ball and Yu Yu Hakusho with more varied partners like Tenchi Muyo!, Outlaw Star, and various Gundam series. Not to mention a fair supply of the DCAU and Warner's comedy series airing around this point, even giving CN the premiere of Justice League. I honestly feel like there was something for everyone on Cartoon Network at this point.

Besides the end of Cartoon Cartoon Fridays, I think that the reformatting, and later cancellation of Dexter's Lab, Powerpuff Girls, and Johnny Bravo signified the end of this high period for me. At least for originals, but relegating The Flintstones, The Jetsons, and even Looney Tunes primarily to Boomerang, and cutting Toonami to a Saturday-only affair also stung. I still had the Eds to keep me watching, and a few other solid series to focus on, but this will always be my favorite era of CN.

Cartoon Network from 2014-now- Good stuff era

So, let's face it. Ed, Edd n' Eddy and The Powerpuff Girls are just as good now as they were when they were new. If not better. I'm proud to be have caught the majority of their run as they aired new episodes. But I don't really feel sorry for the children who didn't get to experience these, or my other CN childhood favorites.

Why? Because their current slate of originals is more than strong enough to hold their own against the finest of Cartoon Network's history. I'm cheating a little here, as I didn't really start to pay attention to their recent series until the past year or two, but even then, while I do find the greatness of Adventure Time and Regular Show, and also really enjoy Gumball, it's Steven Universe and Clarence which have especially caught my attention, as it feels like with each episode, both shows find something new and challenging to accomplish. We Bare Bears is another good show, and Over the Garden Wall was a fantastic miniseries. Uncle Grandpa and Teen Titans Go! aren't always to my taste, but those also has some good moments, enough for me to check up on them every now and then.

I would have eaten most of this up as a kid, but the important thing is that with most of these, I'm excited to tune in every week. I do wish that some of the CCF era's variety in scheduling was still around, but hey, kids don't really watch television the same way that we used to. If we can just get more DVDs of some of these series, I'd be happy.

Nickelodeon from 1994-1997- Pre-KC takeover era

I'm playing around a little here, but the first Nicktoons aired a month or so before I was born. Not to mention that Doug doesn't really do anything for me now, and I only especially like a handful or so of Ren & Stimpy episodes. But as a kid? I ate them up, as well as the other Nicktoons from this period.

It was around this time that Nick became more cartoon-friendly, as Doug and Rugrats started to air daily around the end of their original runs, which was standard for the channel at the time. Soon, they wouldn't wait as long to air their other series on a frequent basis, and it would become easier to watch Rocko and Real Monsters beyond their main airing dates, and we'd soon get more good series with Hey Arnold! and Kablam!

I did start to lose track of their originals when The Angry Beavers aired and didn't impress me, and even moreso when I felt similarly uninterested in CatDog and The Wild Thornberrys. I was still catching up with the Nicktoons that I was a fan of, but by this time, Cartoon Network was taking up most of my cartoon viewing.

That's about it from the top of my head. I don't really feel right to add in eras that I wasn't exactly able to watch, like the first few years of the Disney Afternoon, and I can't think of much else. But I was, and continue to be happy with each of these periods of cartoon watching.

Do you guys have any similar ones to note?

Also, reading through this thread again was really cool, since it's fun to see how some of the user's tastes have changed over the years.

But some haven't changed that much. A few series come and go in my personal favorites, but I've had a very consistent base overall, and while he has indeed grown as a person, Spark knows what he likes. :)
Title: Re: Your Top Favorite Animated Shows
Post by: Spark Of Spirit on May 03, 2016, 03:31:54 PM
This might not really count for your subject, but my favorite will probably always be:

The Disney Afternoon from 1990-1996 - The Adventure era

I'd always enjoyed Disney beforehand, but I think this block solidified a lot of potential I didn't know at the time they had (not knowing of Barks or most of their live action output) by mixing adventure and comedy in a serial with some surprisingly good animation that kept me hooked every day after school. I included up to 1996 to make sure I got in the full original run of Gargoyles and a bit of wiggle room for Aladdin since, after that, the blog entirely changed focus, lost its original appeal, and ended up dying.

Though I barely remember the first year of the block, I still do remember a good chunk of Gummi Bears and was rather surprised at how much it holds up now. The rest of the shows I remember more because they were on longer, but it was the next four shows that really stuck with me as I watched.

DuckTales was the first show that had almost everything I liked as a kid, and still like now, solidified into one show. Rescue Rangers doesn't quite have the appeal it once had, but it still is quite unique for what it was. Though TaleSpin is probably the most underrated show on the block being both high flying adventure, old-time screwball comedy, and with some great characters. Darkwing Duck was certainly the surprise hit, however, being both a parody of superheroes and incredibly over the top and gag-ish at the same time--it definitely deserves the comic book series it has.

Then there was Goof Troop, which I think has managed to outdo every single modern attempt to blend sitcoms and gag cartoons by never forgetting that it can do both. This wasn't adventure focused like the others, but it was a welcome breath of fresh air in the middle of the others. Though it did subtly change the aim of the block. Bonkers tried to marry Roger Rabbit with a more sitcom format, though the later episodes featuring Lucky managed to hit the mark more than the Miranda stuff did.

I think the block reached its full potential with Gargoyles. A full on action adventure series with a tight lore and ongoing story that went on for 65 episodes until reaching a rather satisfying end. It is still looked on as one of the best animated shows ever and certainly one that has appeared to have more influence outside of the medium than inside it.

But after Gargoyles, the block spun out. Aladdin was competent and fully welcome, but it was the last show to feel anything like what kids tuned into the block for in the first place. Quack Pack's arrival in late-1996 was the beginning of the end. It was no surprise they dropped the block name in 1997, because it lost the plot and never recovered, becoming a footnote by decade's end.

We will never really have a block like it again for many reasons, but I'm glad we got what we got.

Another one which is harder to nail down would be for Toonami.

Toonami from 2000-2005, the Peak era

The beginning of Toonami as a block was humble, but enjoyable. Voltron, ThunderCats and Jonny Quest were nothing to sneeze at, but nothing we hadn't seen before. 1998 and 1999 saw some great additions including ReBoot, The Powerpuff Girls, Ronin Warriors, Robotech, Transformers: Beast Wars, Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z,and, uh, Super Friends, which were instrumental in solidifying the tone for the black until its inevitable decline years later.

Around 2000 was when Toonami became THE block for action cartoons. There had been blocks before on Saturday morning and even on channels like YTV up in Canada, but there was nothing like Toonami at its peak now or then. This was the year they first grabbed shows that would never get aired otherwise on TV here and they blew the doors off of what was possible. Gundam Wing, Tenchi, and the DCAU made their debut on the block and made Toonami into a thing.

After that, the block only got better. There were strange shows (Hamtaro, anyone?) and the random idea that flopped (Ugh, D.I.C.E.) but I think the best way to illustrate my point is to list shows that debuted on Toonami between 2001 and 2005 including specials and one-offs because they still count. Keep in mind, this was the first time a block ever cobbled together a set of shows like this:

Outlaw Star
The Big O (Season 1)
Cardcaptors
Mobile Suit Gundam
Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team
Dragon Ball
Batman Beyond
Zoids: New Century
Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket
Hamtaro
Zoids: Chaotic Century
Mobile Fighter G Gundam
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (2002)
Transformers: Armada
G.I. Joe
Samurai Jack
.hack//Sign
Martian Successor Nadesico
Gigantor
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Dai-Guard
Yu Yu Hakusho
Rurouni Kenshin
Justice League
Cyborg 009
SD Gundam
Immortal Grand Prix (microseries)
Dragon Ball GT
Duel Masters
Astro Boy
Transformers: Energon
Jackie Chan Adventures
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED
Megas XLR
Rave Master
Teen Titans
Justice League Unlimited
D.I.C.E.
Zatch Bell!
The Batman
One Piece
Transformers: Cybertron
Yu-Gi-Oh!
Naruto
Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo
Immortal Grand Prix (regular series)
Dragon Ball Z (Uncut)

Now that's an impressive list of shows by any measure.

But in 2005 we first began to see the cracks. D.I.C.E. was a misfire, IGPX flopped and floundered, and Naruto began to overtake the block. Shows were disappearing and either not being replaced or were being replaced by outright bad decisions.

In 2006, we got Wulin Warriors, a show so bad it was canceled after its second episode. We began getting Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and unsuccessful experiments like Fantastic Four and Prince of Tennis everywhere. About the only smart addition in 2006 was that of M.A.R. and it was only mildly well received. Within the last two years the block (2007 and 2008) didn't get anything worth mentioning and shriveled up and died.

But everyone was more or less fine when it ended. It had passed its peak and wasn't likely to return there anytime soon. That said, Toonami was a great block at its best, and I daresay it was one of the best around. I don't think we will ever see an action block reach those peaks again.
Title: Re: Your Top Favorite Animated Shows

Yeah, I kind of meant to lump Toonami in with that period of Cartoon Network, as well as the first couple of years of [adult swim]. There was such a great range of series that aired on the block at that point, which they'd never dare to match today, even with a longer block and less censorship required.

Although to be fair, apparently we were pretty close to getting Fujiko Mine, but even that's a little too much in terms of content for [as].

And as I mentioned in my post, I couldn't really count the Disney Afternoon, since I wasn't really able to watch it during its peak. But many of those shows still have plenty to offer today.

Does Aladdin still hold up? It seems like a "Only good during its era" type of shows for me. I did really like it back then though.

Naruto did pretty much kill Toonami.

Aladdin was okay, never much more. If you're in the camp who thinks the its sequels were among the least offensive of Disney's DTV onslaught, then it's worth checking a few episodes out of. But I'd never call it essential by any means.

I definitely liked the sequels. I haven't seen them since I was like 10 though.

I decided to list out my favorite animated shows from this decade so far (starting or ending from 2010-present):

Archer
Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes
Batman: The Brave and the Bold
ERASED
Green Lantern: The Animated Series
Gravity Falls
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
Kids on the Slope
Level E
Mr. Osomatsu
My Hero Academia
Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu
South Park
Tiger and Bunny
Ushio and Tora

Plenty of other great ones, but these are my personal favorites.

Quote from: GregX on May 16, 2016, 09:50:43 AMGargoyles
Spectacular Spider-Man
Batman TAS
Avatar the Last Airbender
Pinky and the Brain
South Park
Venture Bros
Simpsons
Moral Orel
Young Justice
Star Wars Rebels
TMNT 2K3 (the first four seasons only)
Transformers Animated
Beast Wars
Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes
Batman the Brave and the Bold

I'm surprised to see Star Wars Rebels on there. I thought that you weren't a fan. But it's inclusion does remind me that I need to get around to it. I also need to re-watch Tranformers Animated, Beast Wars, and a few other shows on your list, get back to TMNT 2K3, and catch up with The Venture Bros. Great choices all around, though.

On the subject of Marvel and DC superhero shows, while I fully agree with the sentiment that on the whole DC's animated output is generally far superior to Marvel's (although none of DC's recent outings have enticed me, to be honest), I feel rather disheartened when I notice stuff like The Spectacular Spider-Man and Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes being rather overlooked these days. I hardly ever see anyone talking about it, especially when on the subject of how much Marvel Animation sucks. You'd think that people would at least point out that these two series are stand-outs in their own right, but they seem to be rather forgotten these days despite not being that old.

It helps when Marvel's TV department is doing their best to bury both shows. They pretend they don't exist.

Great stuff, yourself, Avaitor.

Adventure time is sort of like the FMA of western cartoons for me, in that I think that it's generally pretty good, but have never been able to bring myself to truly love it like everyone else does.

I really need to watch more of Clarence. And I need to start Steven Universe one of these days.

Fate/Zero is awesome, but it's due for a re-watch from me.

Hunter X Hunter 2011 is good stuff, but I'm in the minority that prefers the 1999 series.

I've read a decent amount of the manga, but oddly enough I still have yet to get around to the OPM anime. I'll fix that soon.

I also still need to get around to some of those other shows.

As for the ones from my list which have cracked my top list, they'd be (not including ones that have already been featured on my previous lists):

Archer
Mr. Osomatsu
Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu
Ushio and Tora

Ushio & Tora
Blood Blockade Battlefront
My Hero Academia
Erased

Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes
Green Lantern: The Animated Series
Batman: The Brave and the Bold
Gravity Falls

Batman is my current favorite show of any kind. I'd even say the gap between it and my current favorite anime, HXH 1999, is kind of big.

I honestly haven't heard much about Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjo, but reading about it makes the series sound pretty promising. I definitely need to give it a shot.

And I forgot about Green Lantern! What a nice show.

As for Adventure Time, it's never been the funniest or most engaging show out there for me, but what makes it stick around in my mind is its ability to experiment. Not every breaking of the show's mold works, but I rarely feel like I'm watching the same episode twice, which I honestly can't say about many of my other favorites. Even when the show is at its most drab, or picks less-interesting characters to focus on, I like tuning in because they always seem to find something new to do with the show.

Also, I need to watch past the first 2 episodes of Kids on the Slope.

Green Lantern doubly hurt because it was canceled due to the movie bombing, but it was such a great space opera that really made me care about everyone involved. I hope it is looked back on as one of the best superhero shows with Spectacular Spider-Man.

I should have also included Tiger & Bunny, but let's just say that's at #11.

Cool lists, guys! Lots of great stuff that I like in there. So many great shows have come out of this decade. We're definitely in a renaissance when it comes to television animation.

My Top 20 Animated series of the decade would be as follows. Like Avaitor, I'm only counting shows that started after 2010, though I'm counting distinct seasons/sequels to some series as separate shows. I'm also highlighting shows that have broken into my all-time favorite animated series list.

Adventure Time
Archer
Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes
Blood Blockade Battlefront
BoJack Horseman
China, IL
Clarence
Gintama'/Gintama°
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
Kill la Kill
Lupin the Third: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine
Lupin the Third: Part IV
Major Lazer
Mr. Osomatsu
Mushi-shi -Next Passage-
Regular Show
Rick & Morty
Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu
Space Dandy
Steven Universe

Obviously, there's more that I like. But these are the shows that have left the biggest impression on me and I revisit the most.

The series couldn't even get a toyline to bomb, since distributors didn't want to hold shelf space for something tied to as big of a dud as the GL movie. Which is a shame, since it's a good series that deserved more.

I haven't really heard about Major Lazer- is it really worth a look?

I'm a fan of both shows, but since I limited myself to only 20 series, I had to leave them off. While Black Dynamite is still one of my all time favorite movies, I haven't really revisited the animated series since it ended. As for Mike Tyson Mysteries, while it's been consistently great, I still haven't really formed a real connection with the show itself that makes watching it more of a personal experience for me like most of my other favorites provide. That could change in the future, though, especially considering how strong it's been this season.

I don't know if it's for everyone, but I really, really enjoy it. The show blends psychedelic imagery, creative takes on familiar pop culture topics, homages to 80's cartoons, the sensibilities of a stoner comedy but with stronger wit and narrative flow than most [adult swim] fare, dynamic animation, and eclectic and memorable music rooted in electronic/dance music culture in one thoroughly enjoyable, unique package. It's one of my favorite animated series currently running, and I think it's a shame that it's been so overlooked. The first episode in particular, "Bad Seed," would rank amongst my all time favorite animated episodes period. If season two is as strong as the first, it'll crack my favorites list easy.

I know GIR was the face Lol Random type humor for the longest time but tbh you could always sorta guess what types of things he would say. Ed's dialogue from EEnE was far more amusingly authentic in how nonsensical it was like the line "Shhh. My yeast is rising" straight up mystifies me to this day.

This is from tumblr, but it's 100% true. I still enjoy Zim, but Gir is probably my least favorite part of it. Ed, however, is a hell of a character.

There's a science to Ed, especially when you realize that he's smarter and less nice than he leads on to be (notice how he never apologizes for the damage he does to everyone).

Gir is just random for the sake of random. And he's rarely ever that clever about it.

You know, it's funny, the 2010's are a decade where I can just take from what started in the decade, and leave it there. There are a few good leftovers from earlier that didn't air too many episodes in the decade to really count, like KOTH, and it feels like the only quality series that I'd be leaving out if I stick to just what started from this decade are TB&TB and South Park. It's more tough to do that for the aughts, since some of my favorite series started late in the 90's, and had a lot of their best material in the new millennium.

It's especially weird for something like Batman Beyond, which released a fair amount of good episodes at the tail end of the 90's, as well as some very early in the 00's. I can't get a feel for that one at all. But I guess it doesn't matter, since it's easy to distinguish it as a good show.

Anyway, here's 20 of my favorite cartoons from the 2000's again bolding my favorites.

American Dragon: Jake Long
Avatar: The Last Airbender
Batman: The Brave and the Bold
Black Lagoon
The Brak Show
Courage the Cowardly Dog
Death Note
Ed, Edd n' Eddy
Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid
Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law

Higurashi no Naku Koro/Kai ni
Home Movies
Invader Zim
Justice League
King of the Hill
Ouran High School Host Club
Sheep in the Big City
The Spectacular Spider-Man
The Weekenders

People who say that the 00's were a dry age for cartoons don't know what they're talking about. There's a lot of good variety here.

Edit:

Honorable mentions to The Venture Brothers, TMNT 2k3, and the original Clone Wars. Oh, and W.I.T.C.H.

Also, I swapped out PPG for Courage. I might ultimately prefer it, but Powerpuff was marred by the post-movie episodes, but Courage was nothing but enjoyable during its run.
Title: Re: Your Top Favorite Animated Shows
Post by: Avaitor on May 31, 2016, 09:55:01 PM
I'm bored enough to write about my favorite 2000's series a little, and now I'll update it to a top 25.

American Dragon: Jake Long- Yes, the show's use of slang was obnoxious early on, but I feel that was a part of the fun that the show exemplified. It seemed like the cast, which was already full of voice acting greats, enjoyed their work here a lot. Dante Basco even seemed to have fun dressing up as Jake in the Nostalgia Critic's Top 11 A:TLA episodes. The show had a good sense of humor that made it easy to enjoy, but it also wasn't afraid to pause this for good stories and action, which it balanced pretty well. It's a mix that I never felt Kim Possible did as well, which was a show that I always felt overstayed its welcome in more than one way.

Avatar: The Last Airbender- I'm still not the biggest fan in the world, but it's hard to deny just how good and important the series was. The mythology and character development is incredibly rich, and it has some of the best action sequences in any animated series. This is due for a rewatch in the near future.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold- As much as a salute to the silver age of comics as it is a welcome embrace of modern comic's weirdness, this is among the best of its kind, with too many great moments to name. And it's definitely one that I'm planning to rewatch soon.

Black Lagoon- I've seen the series before, but seeing Toonami air it was a treat, even if it didn't get the greatest reception. This is a solid to explosive action movies, with a strong cast of characters that are given fair development throughout. Rock's turn from shy guy to true badass wasn't as surprising as you'd expect, nor was the breaking of Revy's character that intense. It all works out for a good time.

The Boondocks- I can't believe that I forgot this earlier in my list! If we're only talking the first 2 seasons, which aired in this decade, it definitely deserves mention. The hiatuses were tough, but the animation always came out a little stronger than the previous year, and the commentary fresher. Until that disastrous last season, which I can ignore here. Still, I wish that McGruder would do another season, so he can give the characters their say on Black Lives Matter and Ben Carson, among other topics. I wonder what Ruckus would think about him.

The Brak Show- Of [adult swim]'s initial lineup, this seemed to do the weakest of all the other series, and it was the first of their originals to be cancelled. Which is a shame, since I always liked the unfiltered absurdity of the show. More Brak and Zorak time is always welcomed, while Brak's Dad is one of the all-time great inventions. Mom and Thundercleese were hardly slouches, either. But yo, "We Ski in Peace" is among the funniest 10 minutes ever.

Courage the Cowardly Dog- I've mentioned before that I wasn't a big fan of the show as a kid, but now that I'm older, I appreciate it a lot, and picking up the DVDs allow me to enjoy its varied range of emotions. At any given moment, the show can be legitimately frightening, downright heartbreaking, and yes, fucking hysterical. In its best episodes, it can be all of the above at once, and maybe even more.

Death Note- I had a bit of an anime drought for a year or two, and Death Note's airing on [adult swim] Action is what got me back into digging Japanese animation. I kept on hearing good things, so I checked one of the earliest episodes, but not the first. I didn't understand everything yet, but I was already hooked, especially after catching up on what I missed. I didn't miss an episode after, and the show's level of suspense still appeals to me today. The manga is great too, especially as the second half delves into Near and Mellow's characters more, but the anime is still my go-to for the story.

Ed, Edd n' Eddy- I was a fan since day one, but the series that I love didn't really find itself until the second season, when Antonucci and crew started to experiment more with the show's form, gave the rest of the Cul-De-Sac more time to shine, and especially when the Eds started to expand as characters. I'm still picking little things up from them and the other characters even today!

Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid- Really, each series is worth checking out. The first part has some rough patches, but does a great job at introducing the characters, and has Gauron! Fumoffu is fluff, but it's undeniably fun fluff that's too enjoyable to skip. But TSR is a hell of a ride from start to finish that it deserves special mention. It's still funny, but has some of the most imaginative fight scenes and tightest tension that I can think of in an anime, all made before Kyoto went south. If the new series can live up to this, then I'll be extremely happy.

Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law- Barring the original Space Ghost (whose glory days was in the 90's), this is probably my favorite of the original Williams Street batch. This did a great job of lampooning the Hanna-Barbera library, mostly out of love and with a sick, but smart sense of humor. Much of their output had a tough time living up to this, and I feel that few of their series ever really did.

Higurashi no Naku Koro/Kai ni- I was happy to see Parasyte air on Toonami, especially to a strong reception! It's a good horror anime series, but this is still one of my favorites, and watching (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zt26CSwCNao) both openings (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GZgzc3_-eA) again remind me of the many subtleties that they hide for the series. They're different beasts, but each do a good job of world and character building to freaky psychological effects. Although the animation in both leaves a lot to be desired.

Futurama- HOW DID I FORGET FUTURAMA? Well, really, I need to give it a rewatch sometime soon, but it is a great show, which aired just at the right time, as The Simpsons was on its decline. But it's cast is nearly equal to that show's strongest, which is a hell of a compliment that I'm not making lightly. And it does sob moments just as well as Groening's other show, too.

Home Movies- This is everything you can ask for in a comedy. Incredibly well-defined characters tackling realistic feeling situations with an endless supply of killer lines. I know that Bob's Burgers has more fans, but this sticks out to me more, and I'd strongly suggest to anyone that enjoys BB's handling of childhood to give this a watch, as well.

Hunter x Hunter (1999)- We may call it HXH 99, but the vast majority of it aired in 2000 and early 01, so this definitely deserves mention. The 2011 series may have covered more of the manga, but this series does have better pacing, and a particularly killer Yorknew City adaptation. I think both are worth a watch, but this is ultimately the stronger of the two series.

Invader Zim- I was just talking about how Gir annoys me nowadays, but there's still a lot that I do like about Zim nowadays. I really dug the show's darker sense of humor when it was on, and Nickelodeon was full of Klasky-Csupo lameness, and I still kind of do, even when it feels like Vasquez is trying too hard. Oftentimes, he strikes a nerve that still feels rare to hit today. But really, the show's constant struggle between Zim and Dib is what keeps it appealing. They're both idiots, and it's fun to see how far their pissing matches go. Also, Gaz.

Justice League- As a whole, Justice League is pretty uneven. The first season is hard to sit through, it takes a little for the show to find its grounding when it goes to Unlimited, and the last season feels extra. But at its best, primarily the second season and the Cadmus arc, this feels like a culmination of everything Timm and crew had learned from their decade of making super hero cartoons, and makes for a fitting end to their run.

King of the Hill- This is one of the few shows that could easily make it on a favorites list for the 90's and 00's. But even though I'd gladly concede that seasons 3 and 4 are the show's peak, there's far too many highlights from the whole decade to ignore. That middle point where character development was all but dropped was awkward, but Mike Judge coming back into full swing for the last few seasons is one of the best thing to happen to the series.

Ouran High School Host Club- You could make a case that Ouran celebrates shoju/harem tropes as much as it mocks them, and honestly, it wouldn't matter much to me at all. The show is so constantly enjoyable no matter how you spin it, and gives us a varied and great cast. Now that the manga is long finished, I'm awaiting the announcement for a new series already, be it a continuation, or a redo that doesn't write out what makes this adaptation endure.

The Powerpuff Girls- This is here primarily for the half of season 2 that aired in 2000, as well as 3 and 4. The show did lose its track when McCracken left after the movie to focus on Foster's, but at its best, there's little topping Powerpuff. The show's likable, skewing sense of humor is often duplicated, but rarely matched.

Sheep in the Big City- This show deserved much more. This is the closest thing that we've had to a spiritual successor to Rocky & Bullwinkle, and while it doesn't have the strangely timeless Cold War-induced sense of humor that makes that endure, Sheep makes up for that with fourth-wall breaking that would make the Looneys proud; commercial parodies that Ren & Stimpy would be jealous of; and character bending that made it fit in with the Cartoon Cartoons. With comparisons like this, I hope I entice you to (re)discover the series.

The Spectacular Spider-Man- This is everything that I could ask for in a Spider-Man series, and more. Josh Keaton is the perfect Spider-Man, melding wit and intensity better than Tobey Maguire ever bothered to, AND a perfect Peter Parker, filling in the angst that Andrew Garfield didn't nail (the jury's still out on Holland, who had a good start, but is still below Keaton in my eyes). And thanks to Greg Weisman's fanboyisms, a great Spider-Man series was brought to screen that allowed for amazing arcs before leaving the world all too soon. I'm really just glad that he didn't write Mary Jane like Gwen Stacy, and similarly gave Gwen a little extra depth than she initially received in the comics.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle (2003)- If anything, this might be too tad of a serious adaptation of Eastman and Laird's original comics, but it's definitely a more worthy take than the original 80's show, nostalgia be damned. At least the first four seasons, before 4Kids went too batshit trying to keep the toyline on the shelves. But when it worked, the turtles were each well-defined, and the main arcs were worth sticking around for. That said, I should probably give the recent series a watch. From what I've heard, it's a good balance of the original show's goofiness (which can be fun in small doses), and this one's seriousness.

The Weekenders- This was my favorite of the One Saturday Morning cartoons, but I'll acknowledge that some of them were also pretty good. But The Weekenders is still special to me for how it built on its four characters, and gave each a wide range of depth in between plenty of great lines. As a child of divorce, I could relate to Tino feeling left out by not having his father around, while I could also relate to Tish's feelings of being the odd foreign kid, Lor's happiness despite her insecurities, and Carver's mixed feelings of being a fuck-up. The supporting cast was also fun, and I still want to try some of those pizza places out.

Courage really is so good. I think that's one of the most inspirational shows for my writing ever since my childhood. It's aged beautifully.

Harvey Birdman is way better than a Williams Street series has any right to be. It's consistently hilarious and perfect for re-watches.

I've often forgotten about Futurama these days too. I think it's because the revival seasons, while not terrible, didn't leave a particularly good impression on me aside from the first one, which was also slightly below par. But those first four are as close to perfect as it gets.

Jhonen Vasquez has turned "trying too hard" into an art form. I don't really like his comedy that much anymore, but he's a master of his craft, and I have a lot of respect for him.

It's gotten to the point where I hate thinking about Spectacular Spider-Man. I want to watch it again, but I feel like it would hurt too much. To think that we could have seen so much more of that rich character development by now is maddening. I wish Marvel would at least let them start a new comic series to continue where season 2 left off.

I want to pick my Blu up and finish rewatching SSM and write about it, but yeah, it hurts knowing that we'll never get to see more of Greg's take on the characters. Especially after hearing about some of his ideas for season 3.

What are some of your favorites from last decade, Foggle? Or this decade, for that matter?

Honestly, aside from a few series I haven't seen much of, my list would look extremely similar to yours! ;) I haven't really kept up with TV in general over the past few years, but my favorite 2010's cartoons are definitely Archer, Fujiko Mine, and Space Dandy. All three of those are very close to my heart. I really need to start watching stuff again...

South Park has had an insanely good run over the past three seasons. It's probably my favorite long-running animated series that's still going.

Really cool lists, guys! There's a few series listed that I want to see or rewatch, but I will say that Billy & Mandy nearly made my own one. Although I do need to see some more of that again, as well.

Great movie list, Avaitor! Most of those included among my favorites if I extended mine past ten. I really do need to finally watch Walt with Bashir sometime, though.

You know, I was going to make a list of my favorite 90's series, but hot damn, there were a lot of good ones then. Enough to fill a database up.

In many ways, the industry has only improved, but there are so many gems from the 90's.

Edit: Also, I forgot to put Sita Sings the Blues in my 00's movie list. Such a cool one, too.

Waltz with Bashir is one of those movies that I really should get around to at some point. That and The Fantastic Mister Fox.
Avaitor also reminded me that I should re-visit Sita Sings the Blues and Coraline as well. I remember both of them being great and actually preferring the movie-adaption of the latter over the original novel.

Anyway, no point in putting this of any further. Here are my favorite animated shows of the decade (out of the ones I've seen), so far:

Adventure Time
Archer
Concrete Revolutio
The Eccentric Family
Gravity Falls
Katanagatari
Mawaru Penguindrum
My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic
Over the Garden Wall
Ping Pong the Animation
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Rick & Morty
Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated
Shirobako
Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu
Steven Universe
The Tatami Galaxy

Honorable mentions to Bojack Horseman, Erased and a few others.
Thinking of making a favorite characters of the decade list as well.

Nice list! Can't believe I forgot Over the Garden Wall - that really should be on mine. I really need to see a lot of the anime you have on your list though. Especially Shirobako, which which is definitely right up my ally based on what I have seen of it.

Yeah, Shirobako is great; one of those shows where I felt really invested in the characters' struggles and wanted them to succeed.
Also, I just realized that I forgot Young Justice, adding that to the list.
