Title: Greatest Live-Action TV-Show Tournament
Post by: Pharass on December 05, 2011, 10:38:20 AM
The time has come to chose the greatest TV-show among sixty contestants. The rules are pretty much the same as in my last tournament:

There will be 4 shows in every match and you'll rank them all in terms of preference with 1st Place= 4 points, 2nd= 3 and so on. Ready? Here we go.

Round 1, Match 1

The Prisoner (http://watchseries.eu/serie/the_prisoner_%28uk%29)

(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwhatculture.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2009%2F01%2Fmr_six_original.jpg&hash=bbf6465662b6e1f036b4214246c54d5201f13094)

Vs.

Prison Break (http://watchseries.eu/serie/prison_break)

(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.tvqc.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2009%2F02%2Fprison_break_ver6.jpg&hash=e4f37c4e0d6780531d16ab875337589e80934faf)

Vs.

Burn Notice (http://watchseries.eu/serie/burn_notice)

(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstevenmw.files.wordpress.com%2F2010%2F01%2Fburn-noticepic.jpg&hash=c56ee04a5c4d883d4c181efa0643f84bd2f761ad)

The House of Cards Trilogy (http://watchseries.eu/serie/house_of_cards)

(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F1.bp.blogspot.com%2F_l2VT7bYUEaY%2FTL-gFgEHo-I%2FAAAAAAAAJps%2Ff9QQf33avVs%2Fs1600%2Frichardson460.jpg&hash=125f15e8b71038a069e1a14c650f723998f0ccbf)

Ladies and Gentlemen, you may start voting. Personally, I'm going to wait until I've seen an episode each of Burn Notice and Prison Break.

If the moderators want me to remove the links for each show, please let me know.

Since I've seen none of these shows, I'm going to go with order of preference of how I want to watch these shows.

1- The Prisoner
2- Burn Notice
3- House of Cards
4- Prison Break

Although I should probably put Prison Break higher, since Demi was in an episode when she was like 12.

You just had to put both of my favorites together in the first round. >:(

1. Burn Notice (Favorite show)
2. Prison Break (I already know Dr. Insomniac would love this. I'd put this as the #1 rec for him.)
3. House of Cards (never heard of it.)
4. The Prisoner (barely heard of it.)

Yeah, we're not doing the "Put stuff in last place because you've never seen it" anymore. We want people to actually at least see some YouTube clips of the show before actually voting. So go watch some Patrick McGoohan.

Note: The link for Galactica goes to the 2005 series since I couldn't find episodes of the 2003 miniseries anywhere online. If anyone knows where to find them, feel free to post a link. No Hulu though, since not all of us will have access to it.

Thank you.

Here are the results:

King of Queens = 8 pts
Boardwalk Empire = 16 pts
Downton Abbey = 13 pts
How I Met Your Mother = 13 pts

As you can see, Downton Abbey and HIMYM is currently tied. I'm going to need one more vote for one of these shows in order for the tournament to move on. First come, first-served.

My Votes:

That 70's Show: Well, considering that so far, it's the only show that I've seen more than one episode of, it was bound to take the top spot. Although, I have a feeling that Six Feet Under may surpass it when I've seen more of that show.
Six Feet Under
Parks & Rec
Night Court

Buffy (Need to read more of Season 9)
Misfits (Has done more for superheroes than any recent comic has)
Arrested Development (Smart, edgy, and very good at using continuity to its advantage. Damn shame that 2/3rd of the characters were under-characterized bastards though)
Married With Children (Al Bundy's great, but I think it gets overestimated)

Firefly
Boy Meets World: Has potential, but I need to see more episodes.

By the way: You'll need Veoh to watch the Edge of Darkness. My apologies for any inconvenience, but complete episodes of this show is not easy to find and I'm not sure how the moderators feel about torrents.

Yeah, the RTD era hasn't aged well. For you, I'd suggest watching the classics like Talons of Weng-Chiang, Deadly Assassin, or the recent ones like The Doctor's Wife.

I propose that in the final round, we write down a short essay elaborating on why the two remaining series deserve their acclaim and what makes them stand out from the rest. If you have not been a witness to either of the shows despite how this match has lasted for 9 months, then torrent that shit immediately or I staple your tongue to your testicles.

-----------------

The Prisoner: Tough choice between this one and Tinker, Tailor but in the end I decided to go with McGoohan's masterpiece. Personally, I think of The Prisoner as the ancestor to shows like Lost: It was a weird, enigmatic and utterly compelling show that was clearly a head of it's time and although there are some shows in this tournament that I like more, it's my opinion that out of the shows in this match, The Prisoner is the one most deserving to end up in the finale.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
The Twilight Zone

I'm prepared to write something for my choice in the finals (not an essay though). You should be warned though that it will probably come of as me rambling more than anything else. At least, that's what most of my longer posts seem like to me.

The Prisoner - A powerful display of what defines identity in society
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy - It's a great shame that people only remember Alec Guinness for that guy who awkwardly swang a lightsaber and not as George Smiley.
The Twilight Zone - While I admire it, I do feel that it holds your hand more than the above two shows. Rod Serling pretty much tells you what to think instead of allowing you to make sense of the stories for yourself.

The Prisoner - One of the greatest stories ever broadcast on television. Beginning, middle, and end are all superb.
The Twilight Zone - Defines brilliant in terms of TV.
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy - Definitely amazing, but not quite as perfect as The Prisoner or legendary as Twilight Zone.

That's pretty much the extent of what I can write about these.

And now, the moment of truth. We're down to two shows and only one of them will be crowned the champion. Ladies and gentlemen, it's time for:

----------------

Both these shows are magnificent in their own ways and deserve all the praise that has been heaped upon them over the years. However, in the end my vote for the greatest TV-Show goes to The Wire.

Ah, The Wire, truly one of the finest jewels in HBO's crown. For five seasons it invited us to Baltimore and allowed us to meet some of the richest, most complex characters ever to have graced the small screen: Freamon, McNulty, Omar, Bubbles and the rest are all characters who will never be forgotten by those who have made their acquaintance. Are there others shows worthy of being called the greatest? Definitely. Is The Wire worthy of this title? To quote, Mr. Little: "Oh, indeed."

Indeed it is.

Title: Re: Greatest Live-Action TV-Show Tournament
Post by: Dr. Insomniac on September 28, 2012, 07:19:02 AM
I have once heard The Wire described as "Ghetto Shakespeare". And I thought, "Well, that's one way of putting it." Let's be honest. This is not an easy show to watch. You can't just pop in an episode and let it run while you make dinner, it's not like that. It's the kind of show that demands that you treat it with just as much respect as it does to you. And this is what it is: A series that absolutely refuses to talk down to you, to guide you, or to come up with the conclusions for yourself. Moral ambiguity's like a dime a dozen in this show, and it makes no doubts that you can figure it out yourself.
