Title: Greatest Anime Series (Voting)
Post by: Dr. Ensatsu-ken on December 27, 2012, 08:27:46 PM
Alright, now to start the competition. The rules are simple. Much like other threads of this sort, I will list 4 series per round at random. Rank the 4 series in order from your most liked to your least liked among the available options (top to bottom). Your 1st choice will receive 4 points, and then your subsequent choices will each get one point less based on ranking (so 3 points for your 2nd choice, 2 for 3rd, and only 1 for 4th/last).

Also, while its not required, I would encouraged to briefly explain your choices a bit if you can.

Without further ado, let's begin!

Round 1, Match 1:

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni

vs.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

vs.

Death Note

vs.

Trigun

My choices:

Death Note (Because it entertains the hell out of me, both in legitimate and completely unintentional ways)
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (honestly a tough choice between this and Trigun, but I didn't want to incur Foggle's wrath)
Trigun (It was really a coin flip between this and Higurashi for me, to be honest)
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (Its OK, but honestly its not really up my alley)

Trigun - One of my all-time favorites
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - A good mystery with well written characters, shame this seems to be a fluke
Death Note - It's a pretty good noir story with a surprisingly good ending
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - ..........

Alright, I'm going to wait a bit more to give Pharass a chance to make his picks. If he doesn't post by tomorrow morning, though, then I'll tally up all of the current votes for this round so that we can move onto the next one.

Lord Dalek doesn't count because he's not actually a person! :>

No, but seriously, I actually thought that he already voted for some reason. Of course I'll wait for him as well, but like I said, I'm moving on by tomorrow morning.

Alright, its time to wrap up this round:

Death Note- 23
Trigun- 22
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni- 21
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann- 12

It was a really close call between Trigun and Higurashi, but it looks as though Trigun just barely made it. Still, Higurashi is a great anime (well, only the 1st season and Kai, anyways), so you anyone who hasn't watched it yet really should. That said, Death Note and Trigun will be moving onto the next round.

Now to move on with the competition.

Round 1, Match 2:

Future Boy Conan

My Picks:

The Big O (Because its Batman with a mecha, and its also the only anime among these that I've actually seen)
Fate/Zero (Because I haven't seen it, but Foggle seems to like it)
Durarara!! (Because I haven't seen it, and I didn't care for Baccano!)
Future Boy Conan (Because I've never even heard of it before)

The Big O (still need to see season 1, though)
Durarara!! (I actually gave up on this, but I've seen some of it, so I guess it should be second)
Fate/Zero (I'm sure it's good, but F/SN still left a sour taste in my mouth)
Future Boy Conan (also not familiar with it)

Future Boy Conan: Not only interesting as a blueprint for Miyazaki's later work (it features several tropes that anyone who has watched a Studio Ghibli film will be familiar with, such as; beautiful flying-scenes, a strong-willed heroine, and morally ambiguous antagonists) but a great series in it's own right.
The Big O
Fate/Zero
Durarara!!: While I enjoyed some of the characters as well as the whole modern-day mythology aspect, I don't think the show itself lived up to it's full potential. For example, the various reveals did not awe me as much as I feel they should have.

Alright, I'm going to go ahead and wrap up this match since I've kept it up all day which should have given everyone who had the opportunity to vote enough time to do so.

Here are the results:

The Big O- 24
Fate/Zero- 19
Durarara!!- 15
Future Boy Conan- 12

The Big O and Fate/Zero will advance to the next round. Pharass, if it makes you feel any better, I may give Future Boy Conan a look soon since I've been looking for a good old-school anime to watch. ;)

Alright, lets move on.

Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit

My Selections:

Great Teacher Onizuka (One of my personal favorite anime ever, and Onizuka is one of my all-time favorite anime characters)
Kino's Journey (Its not entirely my cup of tea to be honest, but I respect the mature subject material and how its handled)
Martian Successor Nadesico (I haven't seen it, but its one of Desensitized's favorites, so its probably pretty good)
Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit (Once again, I haven't seen it before)

Martian Successor Nadesico - I like this a lot as a basic sci-fi story with great characters, and the story takes some really good turns
Great Teacher Onizuka - This type of story has been done a lot, but I think this is one of the best versions of it
Kino's Journey - Pretty good, but a bit too slow for my tastes
Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit - Way too slow for my tastes

Kino's Journey - Desen... :srs:
Nadesico - Seriously, EK. Actually watch a few episodes of each anime before you can make a decent rank.
GTO - It's not that hard to waste 40 minutes on an anime.
Moribito - For example, I watched this. And this sucked.

Kino's Journey (it's pretty slow-paced, yes, but I think it has the atmosphere to pull it off. The episodes with young Kino especially are mindblowing)
GTO (what a hoot this show is, and it made for one of my favorite JO reviews, as well)
Nadesico (I really enjoy this one too, but luck of the draw)
Moribito (aka more burritos. It really isn't that bad, but yeahhhhh, it didn't catch on for a reason. It's just too slow for your average [as] viewer)

I don't have the time to just sporadically watch something on a whim. Usually when I'm going to try a series, I make sure I have enough time to commit to it if its good. If its not, then I probably wasted some time but at least I was willing to give the series a fair shot. Either way, even if I were to watch a few episodes of each anime I didn't know in this competition, I simply wouldn't have the time (and in some cases not even the means) to do so, in which case I either couldn't participate in most matches, or we'd be stuck on a single round forever just so that I could take a day or more to check out every series that I didn't see.

Also, even if I did watch a few episodes of the shows that I didn't see, it wouldn't change much in most cases. For example, I have watched through all of Kino's Journey in its entirety. Even if I watched a few episodes of MSN and liked it, I still couldn't rank it above KJ unless I saw the full thing to know that I liked the full show (unless I downright disliked KJ, which I don't, as I noted that its a good series).

Being overrated implies that a show is really popular. That may have been true at one point for this series, but GTO has fallen into a niche in recent years. I mean, who the hell even talks about it these days (besides me, occasionally)?

Alright, I'm wrapping up this round. Normally I'd wait for Pharass to place his votes as well, however after tallying up the current score I realized that no matter how he voted he couldn't change the results at this point. Also, I'm pretty sure that I won't be able to make any posts tomorrow, so I wanted to get the next match up by then rather than delaying the competition for more than a day. Here are the final results of this match:

Kino's Journey- 21
Great Teacher Onizuka- 21
Martian Successor Nadesico- 17
Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit- 9

Kino's Journey and GTO advance onto the next round. So up yours, Lord Dalek! :bleh: :>

My Picks:

Lupin the 3rd (Alright, I haven't seen all of this series, but I've genuinely liked most of what I have seen of it)
Kaiji (I only watched the first few episodes of it, but I did really like what I saw and I need to go back and finish it soon)
Ronin Warriors (I haven't seen this when I was a kid, but I remember liking it a lot back then....and nostalgia counts just fine)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex/2nd Gig (OK, I've REALLY tried to get into this show multiple times; its just not for me)

My Picks:

Eden of the East (It actually held up quite well to a re-watch, partly thanks to a great dub, but I still haven't seen the movies)
Digimon Adventure (Its a really fun children's show for what it is)
Paranoia Agent (This is another highly stylistic anime that I gave an honest chance but just couldn't get into)
Fruits Basket (Believe it or not I actually haven't seen this one yet....and don't bother asking me to watch it just for this match)

Hunter X Hunter (1999)

My Picks:

Hunter X Hunter (This is still my favorite version of the anime, and its a great twist on standard shonen formulas)
Ouran High School Host Club (One of the few comedy anime that actually somehow worked for me)
Legend of the Galactic Heroes (Yeah, I know, I know....I've only seen the first 17 episodes and its good, but kind of slow)

Cowboy Bebop
Twelve Kingdoms: Probably the best fantasy anime I've seen, it benefits massively from having an extremely detailed and living setting to well-developed characters. My only gripe with it is a subplot that's never properly reserved but that aside, Twelve Kingdoms is pretty awesome.
Darker than Black
Digimon Tamers: Haven't seen it (or any Digimon series, for that matter), but I've heard good things about it.

I don't believe I said that I hated it (or if I did I was just retaliating because I didn't think 02 was as bad as you say, and I still don't, for what its worth), but I do genuinely remember finding it boring as a kid. I didn't re-watch it until I heard JO gush about it so much, at which point I was more grown up and had a lot more appreciation for it. I've had that same kind of reaction to a lot of series, as it is. That includes Cowboy Bebop, in fact, as well as Rurouni Kenshin.

I'm still not fond of the directions they went in with 02, but I do think it was at least competent despite everybody on staff seemingly wanting to make a different show. And at the very least it didn't almost kill the franchise like Frontier nearly did.

Kemonozume

My Picks:

Same as listed.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is great minus the last 2 episodes. Hellsing Ultimate is basically what you'd get if Michael Bay made an anime about vampires (though thankfully he wouldn't handle any of the cinematography in this case), but its a guilty pleasure of mine. And truthfully I haven't seen Gunbuster or Kemonozume before, so it came down to a coin flip between those 2 for me.

Gunbuster - Feels a bit disjointed at times, but it's still a timeless classic. Plus it's pretty much the precursor to Evangelion and Gurren Lagann, without it we wouldn't have those two.
Hellsing Ultimate - Good mindless entertainment for those who are hungry for gorn.
Neon Genesis Evangelion - Haven't seen it outside the Rebuild movies (which are another beast entirely)
Kemonozume - ditto

Neon Genesis Evangelion and Gunbuster move onto the next round.

Round 1, Match 9:

Yami no Matsuei

My Picks:

Monster (I kind of want to dock it for directly ripping off the manga without much creative input of its own, but I just can't do it)
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo (I still need to finish the last few episodes, but its safe to say that its pretty fucking great)
Full Metal Alchemist (For what its worth, I still personally like this version better than Brotherhood, though I think both are OK)
Yami no Matsuei (I haven't seen it)

Though I probably would rank it over FMA if I saw more of it. The villains are pretty terrible as a whole in that one.

Full Metal Alchemist- 15

We have a tie here, people. Somebody needs to break this tie before we can move on, and as far as I know, Avaitor hasn't voted yet, so somebody tell him to get his ass over here and rank his choices whether he wants to or not. Either that, or we'll have to leave it up to a coin-flip....and you know which anime will win if I flip a coin and no one's around to verify the results. :sly:

Fumoffu is just a series of stand-alone side-story episodes that are there for pure humor. Its a fun series and its actually how most people end up getting into the series (rather than watching the first season, which isn't required viewing to enjoy Fumoffu since it doesn't directly reference any of the main story-line, anyways), but its not a good way to gauge whether you would like TSR or even the first season. The first season is the most disliked but I personally enjoy it for what it is, and its a bit interesting in how it has a good deal of focus on humor as well as the serious part of the story-line. As for TSR, though, its flat-out serious (except for the 2nd episode) from start to finish, and its a lot darker than the previous seasons. If you were to watch the extremely cheerful and light-hearted Fumoffu and then go directly into TSR, you'd probably be shocked at how jarring the transition is. That's not to say don't watch Fumoffu, but just to say don't expect Fumoffu to represent what the rest of the series is like.

Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket - Still the best Gundam series
Hunter X Hunter - Pretty good shonen
Kare Kano - Good until the end
Black Lagoon - Not my bag

Oh good, the best anime series advanced.

HXH
Black Lagoon
All Gundams suck except for one and it ain't this one. Big O and Zoids are much much better.

Look, GSF, I liked G Gundam back in the day as well, but you can't let your nostalgia blind you to how hilariously bad it is. It brings us back to a time of terrible Japanese stereotypes of people from other countries, and its fights operate on DBZ logic. Gundam 0080 actually tells a good story, develops characters, and at its heart isn't even really about the Gundams....well, OK, it actually kind of is, but it puts more focus on good characters, anyways.

Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket and Black Lagoon/The Second Barrage move onto the next round.

Round 1, Match 12:

Baccano!

My Picks:

....Actually, I'm going to have to pass on this round, myself. I haven't seen 2 of these anime, I personally think that Baccano! is overrated (well, OK, I just can't get into it), and I'm pretty "meh" on Sailor Moon, to be honest. For me, this is a boring round.

The rest of you should have fun with it, though....

Title: Re: Greatest Anime Series (Voting)
Post by: Dr. Ensatsu-ken on January 04, 2013, 06:54:04 PM
I did like the first few episodes, but then it just got a bit too over-complicated and contrived for my taste. I don't know how to describe it, but it just seemed too hell-bent on seeming smart and provocative that it almost felt like it was trying too hard to me. After a point, I didn't find any of the characters that interesting, and I didn't find myself really enjoying the show while I was watching it.

I can respect the anime and see why its such a big hit, but personally I may need to re-watch it again in full to get some more appreciation for it. For what it is, though, I just didn't like it that much my first time watching it.
Title: Re: Greatest Anime Series (Voting)
Post by: Avaitor on January 04, 2013, 07:03:55 PM
That's fair. Like a lot of anime I've only watched years before, my memory on the show becomes a little more fuzzy each day, but I strongly remember Isaac and Miriam and that sick score. Everything else, not so much. I should probably rewatch it myself.

Assuming I tallied the scores up right (and if I didn't, consider it Lord Dalek's fault), We have a tie between Sailor Moon and City Hunter. Once again, we are in need of a tie-breaker, and I doubt anyone new will be voting for this round.

Baccano!- 10
City Hunter- 8
Sailor Moon- 8
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha- 4

You have the power to make one move on if you want. Just alter your rankings to give either Sailor Moon or City Hunter 1 less point. Otherwise, we'll probably be stuck on this round all night, and for quite a while after that.

The Super Dimensional Fortress Macross

My Picks:

Outlaw Star (It can at least boast itself as being the funniest of the space western anime trilogy)
Kids on the Slope (Am I the only one who actually bothered to finish this show past the first episode? Its actually pretty good)
The Super Dimensional Fortress Macross (I did actually try this one, but like most mecha anime, its not really my cup of tea)
Bubblegum Crisis (Once again, this is another one that I just haven't seen before)

This is a tough one since they're all good.

Kids on the Slope - Yes, I watched beyond episode 1, it's really good.
The Super Dimensional Fortress Macross - I'm not big on most mecha anime, but this is one of the best.
Outlaw Star - This has sort of gotten overshadowed in recent years.
Bubblegum Crisis - This will probably lose, but I do have a soft spot for it.

Macross- Easily one of the best of its kind
Outlaw Star- Solid, but not a major favorite

Bubblegum Crisis- But it sure looks good!

I can't say I agree with that logic. If you haven't seen a show, you can't just assume that it meets your own criteria for quality. That's something that you'd actually have to watch the show for to see for yourself. But, whatever, its your vote.

Anyways, I'm going to tally up the rankings soon.

I feel that it is a more polite gesture than giving a show I haven't seen the last spot.

Fair enough, but unless I absolutely hated a certain show that I have watched, I can't see myself ranking a show that I haven't seen above it. If its something like Inu-Yasha, then yes, I would know that there are certain shows that I haven't seen which I would definitely like better than that show without a shadow of a doubt, but in this case most of the anime nominated for this thread are good titles in their own rights; that much goes without saying. I'm just ranking the ones that I love and are among my favorites higher because I have seen and like them. I can't help the fact that I haven't seen everything in this competition (and really, who has?), but that's also a good way for me to discover new shows. For now, though, I just think of this thread as there for having fun. Its all about trying to see how far your favorite series will make it. Just because something doesn't make it to the next round doesn't mean its not still an amazing show (I mean, hell, some of my favorite series either barely made it through or didn't even make it through at all). At any rate, though, I'm not discrediting your opinion, just questioning how you could rank a show as the best in a certain match with the lack of an actual opinion on its content. Its no problem that you did, of course.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Space Runaway Ideon move onto the next round.

And now we move onto the final match of the 1st round.

Round 1, Match 16:

Akagi

My Picks:

I'm going to pass on this round as the only one of these anime that I've seen anything of is Samurai Pizza Cats. I did see some random episode of Tank Police as well, but yeah, that's hardly enough to go on for ranking a series, especially when I flat-out haven't seen the other 2 of them.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes (The only anime in this match that I've seen exactly 17 episodes of)
Kino's Journey (The only anime this round that I've seen 1 time)

And in case Dr. Insomniac or Lord Dalek have any more bitching to do about my placement of LOTGH because I haven't watched enough of it yet, I only have 2 words to respond with: tough shit.

And for the record I do plan to finish the entire series, so don't whine to me that I need to complete it.

One Piece is. But FMP isn't even that popular anymore. Overrated implies that something is popular and well-liked overall when it doesn't deserve to be (in at least a few people's views). Way to show that you don't understand basic English terminology.

You know, if you guys always hype up Madoka to be the end all be all anime (or even the end all be all magical girl anime), then you're just going to turn people off from the series more than anything else. Hell, that almost turned me off from the series but I tried it anyways and enjoyed it. Its still not among my personal favorite anime, but one of the objectively better anime that I've seen in the last few years.

I'd only give it like a 7-8/10 myself, and I've never hyped it up at all, but I just don't see how someone can say that Sailor Moon is better. That's all.

Because I don't like deconstructionist stories and I enjoy the canon story of Sailor Moon better.

See, I gave a reason.  ;)

I was referring to a lot of its fans in general, rather than any single person.

But really, I think its a good series. I just didn't like it when I saw fans hyping it up as the best thing ever to obnoxious levels, but that really goes for ANY series that's popular, including ones that I like (such as Death Note back when it was at its most popular).

I can't rank what I haven't seen above what I have, and it's not like Sailor Moon is the worst thing on earth itself. Filler SM does little for me as an adult, but I can at least get a chuckle or two from it in moderation.

Madoka Magica isn't deconstructionist. I don't care for deconstructionist stories myself, so I could tell you if it really was one. Its just a magical girl anime that has a darker take on the aspects of the genre.

I should mention though that I DO typically prefer more straightforward, positive, and upbeat series that are most focused on being entertaining to watch rather than anything else. I just found Sailor Moon too redundant from what I had watched of it.

That said, all of my personal favorite series reflect my tastes in that regard. That means, one could argue that Madoka Magica is a "better" constructed anime than most of the anime that make up my top 10 favorites, if one did do that, I'd respectfully explain why I enjoy my favorite anime more and then kindly tell that person to go fuck them-self as, quite frankly, I don't give a rats ass what's considered better or not.

Careful, Dr. Insomniac. That's what I was talking about earlier. I know you love Madoka Magica, but you mustn't forget that other people are allowed to have opinions too. :>

And this is coming from someone who genuinely liked the series.

But I will say that I don't think I view the series in the same vein as Desensitized does. I watched the whole thing and didn't seem like it was meant to be be all down and depressing of a series. It just had a darker take on the genre and came with its own set of morals, namely:

Spoiler
how teenage girls shouldn't blindly trust a magical creature that comes to them with promises of wishes and fantastic magical powers, and also how they shouldn't jump into big decisions blindly as it could ruin their lives. Also, they have to make sure to ask for details such as if making a contract with said magical creature would cause them to have their souls removed from their body and put into external gems. I find it to be very informative stuff, myself.

Yeah, I mean I read it up and I know everything that happens because I was curious to see what the fuss was about- but it's not something I actually enjoy reading or watching regardless of how well it's done. Which is more of what I use to judge things on.

I never said it was bad or terrible, I said it's not something I'm into.

Wait, by read do you mean that you read the manga adaptation of the anime or did you just read a summary of the show to see what it was like?

If its the latter, then THAT I cannot agree with. There are a lot of shows where that method would do them no justice at all.

We are not entitled to our opinions; we are entitled to our informed opinions. Without research, without background, without understanding, it's nothing. It's just bibble-babble. I watched a few episodes, didn't like it, then read the plot to see what would happen for when a fan would inevitably call me an idiot for not watching the whole thing to disqualify be from being able to have an opinion on it.

I tend to do that with any series I start to watch and don't like, because I'm not going to force myself to watch hours of something I won't enjoy because I dislike being bullied out of having an opinion.

Again, I never even judged this show on quality, so I don't see the problem. I don't like it better than Sailor Moon, Outlaw Star, or 0080, but at least I said why.

I'm tired of talking abut this, though. Is this round almost done?

Well, I had assumed that Desensitized actually tried a few episodes of the series or the manga adaptation or even one of the movies when he stated that he didn't like this kind of series. Of course I'd expect someone to have seen or read at least a small bit of what they are basing their opinion off of. He says he did so that's good enough for me.

Anyways, your post brings up another issue that I just remembered. Dr. Insomniac, has anyone told you that you take this stuff WAY, WAY too seriously? :humhumhum:

I was so busy getting ready for going back to college in the past few days that I completely forgot about this thread. Sorry about that. I'll go ahead and tally up the scores and then we can move onto the final match of this round.

My Picks:

I'm going to pass on this round. While I have seen 3 of these anime (well, I've only seen the first season of GitS), I only really like 1 of them, and don't much care for the other 2, so I'm obviously not going to have a very insightful opinion, here.

Really? I've read the entire manga, and when the anime isn't being a shot-for-shot adaptation of the original work, it's actually improving upon it.

Eh, By "improving" all I see is that it has cool action scenes every now and then. It doesn't do anything to improve the actual story or writing, which is fine enough for the most part, but when I think of anime adaptations that make significant changes or improvements to the manga, I think of something like more along the lines of Furahashi's anime adaptation of Hunter X Hunter (as one example), where the anime stays mostly faithful to the manga where it counts, but fixes a lot of the gunk and lazy or badly written parts that the manga had contained and replaces it with some more fitting material. Black Lagoon doesn't really do anything along those lines as far as the anime goes (at least not that I can see). With Monster, I can't really think of too much that they could improve on which is why I'm a bit more forgiving with that, though I still down-ranked it in this round because it was still a pretty plane adaptation that didn't really try to do anything new other than animate the manga panel by panel, which is fine, but in that case its not like the staff behind the anime deserve that much credit for making a great work since all of the strong points are still Naoki Urasawa's writing and art; and unlike Black Lagoon the art in the anime for Monster is almost exactly the same as it is in the manga, though to be fair that's a good thing as well.

The "cool action scenes" are part of the appeal of Black Lagoon, are they not? I fail to see how they could make the anime worse than the manga, in any case.

Black Lagoon anime has animated and more action, better artwork, color, voice acting, and extended/altered scenes every once in a while. These extended/altered scenes serve to make the characters more likable at times. For example, (IIRC) in the manga, Revy kills the innocent people on the boat and Dutch scolds her for it. In the anime, Dutch stops her before she can kill the civilians, and she realizes how wrong that would have been. Also, several story arcs have slightly more meat added to them, such as the first and last ones of the first season.

So yeah, the anime is much better than the manga IMO.

I think so, at least. While the second half of the anime lost some strong development for Mello, the staff behind it used the ability of animation and musical pacing to their advantage for Death Note. Moreso than Monster at least, IMO.

I didn't say that it makes it worse than the manga, but honestly only a few of those added in action scenes are really well-animated and fun to watch. There are other times when the action is on budget animation and is just there for padding, so its a mixed bad more than a definitive improvement.

QuoteBlack Lagoon anime has animated and more action, better artwork, color, voice acting, and extended/altered scenes every once in a while.

EVERY Anime adaptation has color and voice acting. You can't just give one anime special points for doing what any adaptation is supposed to do at a very basic level. I already said that I agreed about the art being better in the anime, but I can think of a lot of anime where I prefer the art over the manga, so its not like its a huge advantage for Black Lagoon that it does that. And as with the extended scenes, like I said about the action scenes, its a mixed bag for me. Some of those scenes do help flesh out the characters more and can be seen as improvements. Other times its just padding to make an episode run its length longer without covering too much of the story, or its added in to improve the story but I find the execution to be lacking. These added in scenes also aren't as plentiful as you make them sound. They are definitely there and anyone who has read the manga will clearly notice them, but for the most part the anime follows the manga's story and characters.

As for the scene with Revy, while I'll admit that I like the idea of her being restrained from killing when possible, you can't really ignore that its just part of her character. The anime cut that scene out in the beginning because they didn't want to stir up any controversy, as stuff that's allowed to fly in manga aren't always so easily allowed for anime that are aired on TV rather than released direct to video as OVAs, and this kind of shows as the anime adaptation didn't stay consistent with these kinds of changes. For instance, while the anime stopped her from killing those people in the beginning, it didn't stop her from doing something later along the lines of killing an unarmed guy who had given up fighting against her in cold blood. After all, Revy is meant to be a cold-blooded killer when you really get down to it, and I wouldn't have a problem with the anime trying to stray away from that a little bit to maybe make her somewhat more likable, but it doesn't stay consistent with it at all and by the 2nd season she is just as ruthless as she is in the manga without any real restraint.

QuoteSo yeah, the anime is much better than the manga IMO.

The anime adaptation is a mixed bag in terms of improvements and detractors, IMO. Its all opinions, anyways.

For what its worth, the fact that I said its great kind of shows that I don't really have anything against it in particular. I just feel that GTO and Death Note do more things in their respective anime adaptations that make the experience really interesting for me despite having read the manga (with Death Note it takes an intentionally over-the-top stylistic approach compared to the manga that I actually really enjoy, and it also cuts out a lot of needless fluff from the 2nd arc). As for Monster, I wouldn't say that its any better than Black Lagoon as an adaptation. But in this case I feel that Monster is just a flat-out better and more interesting story than Black Lagoon, and it just so happens that there wasn't enough stuff that the Black Lagoon anime did in its adaptation for me to rank it over Monster. For what its worth, Monster is flat-out better than GTO and Death Note as well, but in those 2 cases I feel that both of those anime made quite a few more significant changes that I personally enjoyed in terms of adapting their respective source material than Black Lagoon did with its source material. That's really all that there is to it. I still like all 4 of these anime, anyways (the fact that all of them are among my top 10 favorites should tell you something about that ;) ).

QuoteAlso, there's a difference between killing civilians and killing a Nazi who just put his gun down.

I wasn't referring to the Nazi. I was referring to one of the hoodlums that were among a group attacking Rock and Revy in the Yakuza arc. There was one dude who dropped his weapon and said "I give" once his friends were dead. In this case, you could tell just by looking at him that he was a punk for hire who didn't know what he was getting into. The Nazi that you are referring to who she killed would have clearly just stabbed her in the back the moment he got the chance if she let him live, whereas some punk kid would just run away with his tails between his legs. One she needed to kill, and the other wasn't really necessary, so I see it as a pretty big difference in terms of circumstances.

The 5-episode OVA isn't bad for what it is, in terms of adapting select portions of the manga. But, yeah, its no substitute for a proper adaptation. Unfortunately that'll never happen since old-school delinquent manga are not very popular among the modern shonen audience in Japan. I wouldn't mind if the author at least went back every now and then and did a few Shounan Junai Gumi short stories. He already ran GTO into the ground with the mediocre sequel that he produced (which takes place in Shounan, but misses a big opportunity by hardly bringing back any of the original characters from SJG).

My point is that he was a punk kid who clearly didn't know any better. Not a real trained killer like the types that Revy usually kills. She also toyed with him by mocking him a bit before killing him, if just flat-out killing him in cold blood wasn't enough.

Exactly the opposite order as listed.

Well, OK, now we have to wait for someone to break the tie before we can move onto this match! :whuh:

Black Lagoon
Death Note
Monster
GTO

Well....crap, you just posted this right after I tallied up all of the results. :(

I can still factor in your rankings, but addings things up, Monster would still go through with the lead and Black Lagoon would effectively be tied with GTO at 22 for each. So, now somebody has to break the tie before we can move onto this match....

So, is nobody going to break the tie? I sure as hell ain't switching out any of my votes, so the only 2 options that we have here are to wait for somebody else among us who is willing to switch up their votes to either favor GTO or Black Lagoon to make it through to the next round, or to wait for Pharass to post on this thread again and break the tie with his own rankings. The latter option may take a while, though.

Well, you could either give Black Lagoon or GTO one more point to break the tie by changing the order for your rankings. That said, if you're like me and you are pretty satisfied with the ranking that you made and don't really want to change it just to break a tie, then don't worry about it. I'm just seeing if anyone is willing to change up their ranking a bit to either put Black Lagoon or GTO over the edge, since the tie between those 2 is what's currently causing me to put the round on hold.

Monster

My Picks:

Trigun
Cowboy Bebop
Monster
Legend of the Galactic Heroes

So, basically, with this round the series with the most votes will take the top spot, and subsequently we will rank the reaming series as 2nd, 3rd, or 4th place corresponding to how many votes they received.

Ditto.

So what would happen if I reversed my own rankings and in the process made you guys essentially double my original rankings? You should be careful of how you word your posts. :sly:

Zerochan.net is a really good anime. Should've won first place, tbh.

Anyway, yay for Bebop and stuffs. :joy: :joy:

Cowboy Bebop is the greatest anime of all time. Truly, this is an astonishing revelation.

In all seriousness, I need to rewatch Bebop when I'm finished rewatching Trigun.

I have no problem whatsoever with Bebop winning, it wasn't my choice for first place, but it's a great show and deserves it's victory.
See you, space cowboy.
