So, Adult Swim is premiering its newest original series on Mondays at 10:30PM. You can watch the pilot here on YouTube. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMq3ozw7VME)
In case you missed the 20 million promos that AS kept airing the past couple of weeks, it's about a crazy Doc Brown-esque scientist named Rick who brings his grandson on wacky adventures through time and space.
Frankly, I think this has the potential of being another reason to tune into Adult Swim every week, which has been pretty rare in recent years. I just finished watching it, and it's certainly leaps and bounds above the standard AS pilot. Can the premise manage to maintain a decent level of quality for at least a season? I guess we'll just have to see about it.
Alright, second episode thoughts...
MUCH BETTER than the pilot. I was worried that the pilot might make an interesting single-episode premise that wouldn't carry an entire series. Turns out I was wrong. The writing is much tighter here and Rick isn't as big of a jackass as he was in the pilot.
If they can keep this up, this could be one of Adult Swim's best original series in a good long time.
This is Dan Harmon's new show, right?
I see ads for this on TGWTG, and it looks pretty terrible.

Clearly someone doesn't watch
Children's Hospital,
NTSF:SD:SUV, and
China, Il. :humhumhum:
Rick and Morty is alright so far, but not
that appealing to me somehow. I'll see if it improves in a few more episodes and then make my call on whether I want to invest in the show for the long haul.
I'll give you Chinal IL, but the two live action shows you mentioned are horrible. And Rick And Morty is awesome.

I'd rather watch a show that doesn't hurt my eyes.
So you haven't actually watched it then? Alright. ::)
Though are you sure you aren't confusing it as another Superjail? They may look kinda similar but China, Il is nothing like that show at all in terms of mood/feel and doesn't have any chaotic scenes as the former either. I also think the art design is pleasingly simple myself, but to each his own I suppose.
Quote from: Cartoon X on December 10, 2013, 09:29:53 PMThough are you sure you aren't confusing it as another Superjail?
Those two shows are alike? :whuh: I don't see it.
Superjail is reminiscent of the MTV cartoons of the early 90s.
China, IL's designs are bland and unimaginative.
Hmm, yeah, I guess they aren't that alike. They've just always looked kinda similar to me, though admittedly Superjail's designs do have a "wild" feel to them while China's doesn't. Maybe it's just because I used to watch them right next to each other for a while. Anyway, I just don't find the designs of China to be that bad, and I care more about the humor/writing in the show anyway so it does it's job for me.
Quote from: Cartoon X on December 10, 2013, 10:04:25 PMAnyway, I just don't find the designs of China to be that bad, and I care more about the humor/writing in the show anyway so it does it's job for me.
I used to feel the same way back when Adult Swim was still young. Flash was still an experimental thing, especially for TV productions, and I was used to growing up with Hanna-Barbera on syndication and CN, so I was more forgiving to the limitations of the block back then.
However, the moment
Tom Goes to the Mayor premiered, my patience started to grow thin. Flash was making improvements, yet the guys behind the block were doing very little to improve their aesthetics. It was around the time when schlock like
12 oz. Mouse and
Assy McGee premiered where my patience had run out. I could no longer accept "writing over animation" as an excuse--I couldn't bear to look at these ass-ugly aesthetics anymore. If the creators behind Show X didn't make any attempts to at least make the show look in the least bit decent on the eyes, I wasn't bothering. End of story.
I'm generally a patient guy, but I was pushed past the breaking point years ago, and I'm a lot more selective on what I watch on AS nowadays.
(FYI,
Superjail didn't really bother me that much.)
I guess I like China IL more because I had seen some of Brad McNeely's stuff on YouTube beforehand.
"Washington, Washington, 6 foot 7 fucking killing for fun." :humhumhum:
I really hate that "GET YOUR BACK TO SCHOOL, BACK TO CHINA IL" ad.
I saw the pilot for Rick & Morty. I didn't care for it myself. None of the characters were particularly likable. It was too mean-spirited and the story seemed to go on forever. The only bit that I chuckled at was when the bully got frozen to death. Some people on TZ have said that episode 2 was better than the pilot (which wouldn't take much, since the pilot wasn't good at all), but honestly, I'm not sure if I'm interested enough to keep watching this.
The art seems more reminiscent of something you'd see on FOX's Animation Domination.
For the record, I like China IL. It's one of the very few shows that I watch on Adult Swim, which continues to be one of the worst late night blocks on TV.
Renewed for a second season. (http://splitsider.com/2014/01/adult-swim-renews-rick-and-morty-for-season-2)
Good. It's easily one of the best things to come from AS in a while.
No surprise. It's been getting great ratings. Rick and Morty just gets better and better with each episode, so I'm very happy to see it renewed so quickly. Hopefully the wait between seasons won't be long.
Can't wait until Monday for the newest episode? Well, [adult swim] has posted it (in 110 separate parts) on Instagram! (http://instagram.com/rickandmorty)
Oh man, I just watched it, and I think it was the best one yet, and that's what I thought of the last episode too! I think they completely improvised the tv show/commercial bits that Rick and Morty were watching, and it came out awesome. And there were some real strong emotional scenes in this episode too. The entire cast has come together really well and all of the family feel well-characterized already. I think I can safely say with these last few episodes, with certainty, this show is damn awesome. I'm so glad it got a second season. Depending on how season 4 of Boondocks turns out, this may very well be the best [adult swim] original series on air right now, as well as one of the best cartoons currently airing in general.
Justin Roiland posted the pilot for Dog World (joked about in the "Lawnmower Dog" episode). It's in animatic-only format, but it's free to watch.

I'm glad to see your enjoying the show! Just keep watching, it gets better with every episode. I've said before, but I'll say it again; this is easily the best show on [adult swim] right now.
Glad you're loving it, Avaitor. I recently introduced my friend to it as well, and we were in hysterics the other night watching it. Perfect thing to go to after introducing him to all of Community.
The dynamic is just perfect. I understand not really liking the pilot, since it gives you a samey feel, but the show is beyond that. I haven't been this excited about getting into a cartoon since I fully dove into Archer.
I finished season 1 earlier, and I absolutely loved it.
I haven't got my Rick impression down yet, but I can do a pretty okay Mr. Meeseeks.

If the second season is even better than the first, then this series will be the best animated series currently running, no doubt.
You weren't wrong about every episode being better than the last, either. The more that Rick and Morty started to integrate the rest of the family into their adventures, the stronger it became.
Yeah, I actually really like how Summer took Morty's spot in about two of the episodes. She interacts with Rick just as well as Morty does, I think. So I'm glad they're using her more than I thought they would.
The first season will be out on dvd and blu-ray on October 7th. (http://tvshowsondvd.com/n/20042)
Fantastic!
That's right before my birthday, so it's a perfect release date IMO.

Wow. I was really thinking the second season would start later than that, like in the Fall or even 2016. AS originals (at least the high-quality ones) usually take longer gaps between seasons than this.
I'm totally excited! :swoon:

I wonder if Flanders' appearance was the last voice over Shearer gave to the show. I know that there are still a few holdover episodes left with his voices, but I'm not sure in which position the couch gags are done.

Not an easy question to answer. But if were a betting man, I'd figure that stuff like this was on the planning table and finished several months ago before Shearer even knew what he'd be doing now.

New promo for season 2! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y23LCrlGQiQ)
Season 2 begins tonight at 11:30!
Fantastic premiere! I really liked Summer's addition to the later episodes from last season, so it's nice to see that not only was she not forgotten as a part of Rick's entourage, but this addresses whatever issues Morty might have with her teaming up with them. On top of that, the multiple frame concept was great. The more it went out of synch, the more fun it became to watch.
I feel like the show hasn't missed a beat here, so I can only hope it continues from there.
Third season greenlit! (http://www.toonzone.net/2015/08/rick-and-morty-renewed-for-third-season)
Great news! Season 2 is off to a pretty good start so far, even if the premiere is still my favorite episode thus far.
Well, that fucked me up.
Pray for Mr. Poopy Butthole!

Tonight's was honestly the weakest of the season (heck, probably the series) for me. I enjoy hearing Keith David and Kurtwood Smith, but nothing in the A plot or the B plot was uproariously funny to me. Not the worst thing, but if R&M had a dud, I'd consider this it.
Yeah, it stands out as a step down for a season that until this point has topped itself each passing week. I thought it was a good ep, but nothing really got me laughing or surprised me with it's twists, gimmicks, or emotional moments like the rest of the episodes in this season have.
Finally caught up on season 2, and saw today's episode. I thought it was better than the last one. The battery plot with dimensions within dimensions had me laughing, especially Morty hating the tree people, and once they got out of it, having him flip everyone off.
That said, I thought Summer's subplot was more funny, though. I was wondering more about how that story was going to end. The ship cloning the cop's dead son, then melting, is one of the best examples of black comedy ever.
On another note, anyone got a "Turbo Teen" vibe when Morty turned into a car in the post-credits scene?
Yeah, that scene with the ship producing a clone of the son was so dark, I couldn't help but cackle. And considering the third scientist killing himself, all around the episode was pretty morbid. Funny though. Much better than last week.
Damn. Can't say I was expecting any of that from this show. That was great.
Yeah, this is not a show to go for a feelsy moment, but damn, they pulled it off.
Who wants to bet that this will be disregarded in the continuity when season 3 hits, though?
So, um... Regarding tonight's episode (and season 3)... (http://www.toonzone.net/2015/10/rick-morty-creators-speak-about-season-finale-third-season)
Here's the tl;dr version to save you a moment...
-The season finale was meant to be a 2-parter, but instead was smooshed into a single episode (hence the completely different stories between the two parts).
-Season 3 will be scripted by a lot of female writers.
-Mr. Meeseeks returns in season 3.
I don't know if I want Meeseeks back. He really seems like something that can't be topped after his first appearance, and should be left alone.
Yeah, Meeseeks worked as a one-shot character. He'll get old and grating fast if they over-expose him.
Season 3 won't be out for a while, so here's some sponsored content in the meantime.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zre9FhhxR7k
Pretty cute!
I think I saw that the third season is going to have a bigger episode count than the previous ones. Nineteen episodes, I believe.
So, am I the only one who thinks that the second season's finale will be forgotten when the third starts up? The series has had a mixed response in its decision to stick to continuity, and it is in Harmon and Roiland's style to only acknowledge the mindfuck of a season closer in a passing, yet direct, way.
But maybe I'll be wrong here. Who knows.
A friend of a guy I know is making Rick and Morty vlog reviews. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=rmat-m6GcLI) He's not exactly won over.
Season 3 will be out before the year is up. (http://www.avclub.com/article/rick-and-morty-will-return-year-more-episodes-than-233253) This season will also be longer than the first two.
Season 3 update! (http://www.vinereport.com/article/rick-morty-season-3-spoilers-production-team-teases-progress-currently-in-recording/12073.htm) Can not wait. ;D

Season 3 premiere's on right now if you want to watch. Took me by surprise.
Now THAT's what I call an April Fools stunt!
RIGHT????
So my initial thoughts that the premiere would ignore the season 2 finale was off.
I didn't really want that to happen, anyway. This is a great premiere.
They solved the whole thing in one episode while keeping it from feeling rushed. That takes skill.
Rick's final rant about his true motivations and the Mulan sauce was so damn funny I almost threw up laughing.
What a nice surprise.
And it was great. I've really missed this show.
So I take it a marathon of this is this year's April Fools? Fine with me if so, much as I'd love to see Samurai Jack I've heard nothing but good things about this show. Anything that helps AS's only good comedy at the moment is fine in my book.
Though to be fair, a few new shows they have planned for this year actually look decent.
The show hasn't lost it's footing, and the way they resolved last season's loose ends was amazing. I wonder if Beth and Jerry being divorced will really be status quo permanently or if they'll get back together before the season is done. And I totally want [adult swim] to renew the show for nine more seasons until Rick finally gets his Mulan dipping sauce. :D

Cause Dan Harmon is an ass. I love how he was on board for that, but the moment the promotion went south he started shit talking it. At least Justin's response to the matter was very mature with it boiling down to them having no part and to not blame the minimum wage workers. Seriously, I know it's Polygon and all, but in that interview I saw on that website where he was judging the promo art for the sauce felt very condescending like, HOW DARE YOU USE OUR ART STYLE AND NOT LET US IN ON THIS? Everything about that poster from the promo was more inspired from Rick and Morty and not really as much as other nerd culture shirts I've seen where the character is used blatantly but in a different art style. That and the references as well as being as tame as most other references on other shows as well.

The worst part of that tweet is the replies from actual McDonalds workers telling him he's being a jackass, and his reaction is to belittle them for working at Mickey D's and blocking them for daring to challenge his claim.

Season 4 begins in November. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIdk61KN1to)
So we got 70 more episodes of this, which I'm assuming we'll get in seven more 10 episode seasons. Let's hope the show doesn't wear off too soon, because [as] really needs this to be as big as it is if they want to survive without the Fox shows.
Yeah, I'm worried that R&M's popularity will wane before they finish getting through all the episodes they've ordered. Hopefully ordering 70 episodes upfront will help them reliably have new episodes to air every year now, and not take a couple years off like is the case with so many [as] shows between seasons.
Season 4 starts tonight.
Now with less talking pickles and Szechuan Sauce!
That was okay. It felt a little too familiar, really, almost like the show playing safe.

Was just about to post this.
Okay, so do we think that the show will make it to the 10 seasons it's contracted for, or will they drop it sooner?
I think we'll get to Season 10, but anything after that feels like it's up in the air at this rate. I do wonder who they'll get to play the titular duo.
I see a lot of crew members on Twitter are distancing themselves and insisting that Roiland only voice acted and did nothing else in the last 3 seasons. And it's hard to tell if that's true, since some of the recent episodes still have those meandering improv scenes.
Yeah, unlike Family Guy where you can kinda tell that Seth MacFarlane has basically checked out of the series outside of voicing his characters & taking the check for being the creator/executive producer, you can still feel Roiland's influence in certain scenes & such. I still remember when adult swim did premieres for episodes, they would do these behind the scene moments & while the other writers would choose some deep/though provoking/emotional scene as their favorite, Roiland would just pick whatever was funny.
I still find it interesting that he lost not only his role on Rick & Morty, but also Solar Opposites & his own game studio, Squanch Games. Said game studio also went under a sexual harassment lawsuit as well. I know innocent until proven guilty, but this gives me "Oh damn, he really did do it" if this is happening.

I think I get why the show lost me after the first few seasons. The production described here is too split-personality, unable to stay in one area and actually breathe before going to the other zone, instead of finding a way to fuse both the "Let's re-invent the monomyth!" shit Harmon was doing and all of Roiland's toilet humor.

Roiland's Domestic Battery Charges have been dropped. (https://twitter.com/JustinRoiland/status/1638629789258100737) I'd still be surprised to see this man get work after he lost everything. I mean, he lost all his shows, his game studio & all his roles. Not to mentioned that there's still the creepy DMs, the accusations of how much of a prick he was to work with & his general behavior that does make me go "You know he isn't all that innocent" & he was probably able to buy his way out of this.
Maybe if Lazzo was still around, he might come back. Now, I strongly doubt it.
I think it depends on whether or not Roilandless R&M does as well as the last few seasons, and even then, things would have to get really bad (like extremely bad where multiple writers and producers on the show are outed for worse acts) on that front to even consider a rehiring.
The trailer for season 7 is out, and the replacements for Rick and Morty do pretty solid impressions of Roiland's characters.
If I didn't know better, I'd say they actually kept Roiland. They're a little off in places, but I imagine in a season or so they'll finally find their groove where it won't be noticeable.
Ian Cardoni: Rick
Harry Belden: Morty
Well, there you have it.
Watched a bit of the recent episodes, and to their credit, I don't notice anything different without Roiland. But on the other hand, the show still reeks of feeling like it took as much time to write an episode as it does to watch it.
Season 8 will not be coming this year. We'll be getting R&M: The Anime instead.

The anime premieres Thursdays at midnight starting August 15.
Toonami gets the sub premiere on Saturdays.
So after watching an episode of the Rick and Morty anime, why did AS make a cheap, non-union bootleg of their own show?
I haven't watched the anime yet, but I have heard nothing good about it. Is it really that bad?
I'm not even exaggerating on the "bootleg" aspect. It looked like if those Dingo Pictures guys made a Rick and Morty knockoff. Someone I follow on Twitter thought the shitty production values and recasting everyone with Sentai actors was supposed to be an ironic joke. It's like DeMarco really wanted Yuasa but was too cheap to get him, so he hired some random director and told him to do an impression of Yuasa.

The director of this series also did
Tower of God and
Lupin III, so he clearly CAN do better than harping the
Shin-Chan art style and applying it to
R&M.I was never interested in this anime to begin with, and now that it's being ripped to shreds by fans and critics alike, I don't intend to watch it anyway.
