Villains tend to be among the most memorable characters in any work of fiction. Whether they're complete monsters or more morally ambiguous characters, everyone loves (or, in some cases, love to hate) a good villain.
It's with this in mind, that I've decided to start a tournament in which we will decide who the greatest villain of them all is. Basically, any bad guy from any work of fiction you can think of is allowed in this tournament, so don't hesitate to nominate your personal favorites.
Before we begin: There will be 140 villains and each member can nominate 20 candidates of his choice, how does that sound? I may expand either/or both the list of contestants as well as the amount of nominations if there's interest or if it turns out that it's not enough.
So, then, are you ready? I'll start by nominating my first five:

The Terminator (from ummmm....you know, that movie that the Terminator is in....ummmm....I think its called The Terminator :rtard: )
You mean "Deathstroke the Terminator"?
OHNOWAITHOLDON!
---
Speaking of Deathstroke...
-Slade Wilson
-Ganondorf
-The Joker
A few more that deserves to be included:
Frank (Once Upon a Time in the West)
Lady Kaede (Ran)
Rev. Harry Powell (The Night of the Hunter)
Dr. Fu Manchu
Don't forget to keep nominating, everyone.
You seem pretty cool. I can tell that I'll like you already.
We had a game like this back on the old board, but I never finished it, so feel free to do one of your own.
Here's a few of my own nominees:
Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty)
Captain Nemo (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea)
Norman Bates (Psycho)
Phillip Vandamm (North by Northwest)
The Huntsman (American Dragon: Jake Long)
Thailog (Gargoyles)
Toguro (Yu Yu Hakusho)
Magica de Spell
Don Karnage (TaleSpin)
Negaduck (Darkwing Duck)
-The Wicked Witch of the West
-Bowser
That brings up my nominations to 10, so far.
And out of curiosity, these villains aren't being restricted to one appearance, are they? If so then, for Dracula, I'd prefer his appearance in Nosferatu. And Ganondorf is easily at his best in Zelda: The Wind Waker. ;)

Thanks, Avaitor! It's nice to be here.
To be honest, I actually got the idea to this tournament from you. I used to lurk around on the old board but for some reason I never registered.
talonmalon333: Unless a character's personality and traits varies between each version, all of his/her various incarnations will be lumped together. However, if you specifically want the Ganon from "Wind Waker" and the Dracula from "Nosferatu" to be in this tournament than I can just add those titles after said characters' names.
By the way, wasn't Dracula in "Nosferatu" called Orlock for legal reasons?
The Cybermen (Doctor Who)
The Weeping Angels (Doctor Who)
The Smiler (Transmetropolitan)
Norman Osborn (Spider-Man, Thunderbolts)
Quote from: Avaitor on January 09, 2011, 02:50:20 PM
Thailog (Gargoyles)
I was actually meaning to nominate him, but for whatever reason I forgot to do so.
QuoteToguro (Yu Yu Hakusho)
Just for clarity, you should probably specify if you're referring to the younger or older brother, though I can assume that you are referring to the younger one. ;)
Anyways, as for some more choices of mine:
The Green Goblin (The Spectacular Spider-Man)
Sir Crocodile/Mr. 0 (One Piece)
Macbeth (Gargoyles)
Frollo (The Hunchback of Notre Dame)
Yukishiro Enishi (Rurouni Kenshin)
Gauron (Full Metal Panic!)
Colorado (Mackenna's Gold)
Talky Tina (The Twilight Zone)
Frank Fontaine (BioShock)
Ah Jong (John Woo's The Killer)
Hans Landa (Inglorious Basterds)- BTW, this has may more to do with Cristoph Waltz's incredible acting than Tarantino's writing for the character (as in, I'm still not a fan of Tarantino's films, but I do think that this is a great villain from one of this better movies)
Just curious, is there any reason for why Tarantino chose to spell "bastards" with an "e"?
Also, I just realised that I forgot Sgt. Obadiah Hakeswill, so I'm adding him to the list. I haven't actually read any of the "Sharpe" books yet, but Pete Postlethwaite's portrayal of him in the TV-show was magnificent.
Well....
QuoteWhen asked about the misspelled title, director Quentin Tarantino gave the following answer: "Here's the thing. I'm never going to explain that. You do an artistic flourish like that, and to explain it would just take the piss out of it and invalidate the whole stroke in the first place."
Of course, if you want you could just go with Urban Dictionary's reasonings for why the film has that title. I like their explanations for it. :D

Well, since Tarantino is being delibaretly obtuse, I think I'll do just that. ;)

Fantasia. It's still the Devil. ;)

That's true.
By the way, keep nominating everyone. This tournament won't happen without your participation.
Well, I would nominate more, but I've already almost reached my limit of 20 nominations, so I'm thinking carefully about my last 2 since there are a bunch of villains I still want to nominate.

I'm running out of ideas. So if you think of more then two people, feel free to tell me and I'll make them my nominations. ;)
Well, alright, but for now one of my last 2 nominations left will be Claudandus from Felidae.

Claudandus: Evil cat or most evil cat?
You know, I've been thinking of giving everyone unlimited nominations in order to get this list finished. How's that sound to you guys? Everyone in favor, say "aye".
Of course, this could mean that I would have to expand the list, but that's what the "modify" button is for.

Claudandus: Evil cat or most evil cat?
Well, he was only trying to recreate an extinct species of cat at the cost of wiping out every other species that got in the way....so yeah, I'd go with most evil. ;)
And I'm all for extended nominations. I'll try and at least get some other members of the board to put in their nominations, but I can think of at least another 10-20 more villains that I love for varying reasons, myself.
Thanks for nominating One Eye and The Killer which I am sure you did, EK. Ah Jong is technically not a villain though. He's a bad guy but he's the hero of the movie. It's kind of the same thing for Scarface too. I am just giving you shit for when you gave me shit about Saito and Scar. :sly: Speaking of which:
Scar (Fullmetal Alchemist)
Saito (Rurouni Kenshin)
They are villains before the join the side of the hero. More:
Alonzo Harris (Training Day)
Vincent (Collateral)
The Thing (John Carpenter's The Thing)
Two-Face (Batman The Animated Series)
Proto Man (As Break Man in Mega Man 3)
Akuma (Street Fighter)
Hush (Batman)
Vergil (Devil May Cry 3)
Governor (The Walking Dead)
The Thing is the best monster villain ever, for those who don't know.
EDIT: Crap, just saw that EK already nominated Vincent. Stop stealing my nominations!

Actually, as I recall it, I'm the one who told YOU on the last villain thread that Ah Jong was not a real villain, when YOU nominated him on the last villain thread we had. It kind of doesn't work in your favorite when its someone that you nominated before. Nice try, though. :D

I haven't seen "The Killer", but protagonists can be villains as well (for example; Light Yagami or Shakespeare's Richard III) but perhaps Ah Jong is more of an anti-hero?
Not that it matters. For now, let's just concentrate on nominating our favorite villains and if someone makes a choice anypne else disagrees with, we can always sort that out during the actual tournament.
By the way, I've decided to give everyone unlimited nominations, I will also extend the list, should it be necessary to do so.
Also, I'm adding the following ones:
Askeladd (Vinland Saga)
Lord Gro (The Worm Ouroboros)
Satan (Paradise Lost)
Yes, I'm aware that there are those who consider Satan the hero of the poem (note;protagonist doesn't always equal hero) and sure he possesses admirable and heroic traits. In the end though, he's still a self-serving bastard who's willing to basically damn humanity in order to spite God. Sure, I sort of rooted for him during the whole thing, but that had more to do with him being the story's most complex and interesting character than anything else.
I know that I should have some more people to nominate, but I can't think of anything right now.
I'll try to come back later.

Ah Jong is FAR from an anti-hero. He is the complete opposite of someone who is reluctant to be the hero, at least for the cause he fought for in the hero. Oh and one other scene EK would have blurted out loud.
Alonzo is definitely the better villain of the 2, and I would attribute that in big part to him having a better portrayal than Vincent, since Denzel Washington is clearly a far better actor than Tom Cruise. Still, I think Vincent is a great and really memorable villain in his own right, and even though I normally do not like Tome Cruise's acting, this role is one of the only 2 or 3 exceptions for me among his entire career as an actor.
Another nomination of mine:
Gordon Gekko (Wall Street)
In the case of this list lets just completely ignore Money Never Sleeps.
Also:
Max Cady (Cape Fear)
Freddy Krueger (A Nightmare on Elm Street)
Michael Meyers (Halloween)
Biff Tannen and all of his iterations (Back to the Future trilogy)
Michael Corleone (The Godfather Part II)- Keep in mind that I do think this film is overrated, but I'll give good ol' Mikey his dues
Freeza (Dragon Ball Z/Kai/manga)
Ben Wade (3:10 to Yuma 2007 film)- BTW, This is hands down one of the few and only remakes that is better than the original, IMO
Charlie Prince (3:10 to Yuma 2007 film)
Magneto (X-Men)
Angelus (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
Spike (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
Willow (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
Hans Gruber (Die Hard)
I'd like to pick Dr. Robotnik, too.

Yeah, Denzel did do a better job.
Let's see, I have ten and I'll add:
Vicious (Cowboy Bebop)
Knives (Trigun)
Dr. Robotnik (Sonic)
Legato Bluesummers (Trigun)
Yujiro Hanma (Baki The Grappler)
Commander Rehalt Guou (Guyver)
EDIT: Just saw that talon nominated Eggman. Someone naming for Freeza reminded me to nominate for Cell (DBZ)
I've added three more to the list:
Captain Vidal (Pan's Labyrinth)
Eddie the Dane (Miller's Crossing)
Purple Tentacle (Day of the Tentacle)
I'm also thinking of extending the list to 140 entries instead of the previous number.
Did anybody already nominate these obvious Shakespeare choices?:
Claudius (Hamlet)
MacBeth (MacBeth)
Because if nobody else did, then....you know....there you go.
Also:
Makoto Shishio (Rurouni Kenshin)
Sakyo (Yu Yu Hakusho)
Kazuo Kiriyama (Battle Royale)
Tony Wendice (Dial M for Murder)
Eneru (One Piece)
Rob Lucci (One Piece)
Keyser Söze (The Usual Suspects)
Eric Cartman (South Park)- He might as well count as a villain, IMO

Considering all the horrible things he has done (the "Scott Tenorman Must Die" episode, for example) I'd say he definitely counts as a villain.

MacBeth (MacBeth)
*These choices get the talonmalon333 seal of approval.*
Come to think of it, Lady MacBeth should be in this tournament as well. I'm adding her to the list.
Oh, and Colonel Bozzo from "The Blackcoats", one of the first criminal masterminds in litterature and a damn fine villain.
Porky Minch (Mother 3)
Fassad/Yokuba (Mother 3)
Cyrus (Pokémon Diamond and Pearl)
Geechisu (Pokémon Black and White)
Demon King Piccolo (Dragon Ball)
I'm going to try to breathe some life into this thread with a few more nominations:
Char Aznable (Mobile Suit Gundam franchise)
Littlefinger (A Song of Ice and Fire)
Graham Reid Malett (The Lymond Chronicles)
I've also just realised that I've nominated several villains I can't fi hnd any pictures for. I guess I'll have to put what little art skills I have to use, just don't expect anything spectacular.
WHAT HOW COULD I FORGET CHAR
Oh, I'll make up for it by nominating Haman Karn.
My last 5:
Enzyme (Guyver)
Thunderleg (Drunken Master)
Shin (Fist of the Northstar)
John (Drunken Master II)
And my favorite martial arts villain from the '00s and favorite one since John: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4b9-Ng5OpU&playnext=1&list=PLA392BBE5B8312D3D&index=3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4b9-Ng5OpU&playnext=1&list=PLA392BBE5B8312D3D&index=3)

Indulge me; what's the guy's name (or whatever monicker he's known by)?
Sy (The Rebel)
They say his name at the end, which is where I checked to see what his name was, lol
I added Rasputin from "Corto Maltese" and Shodan from "System Shock" to the list. I'm currently in the process of playing "System Shock" and I can safely say that Shodan is among the more memorable villains I've seen in a game.
So, does anyone want to just fill in the last few spots so that we can get the voting started? If nobody else can, I can probably think of a few more entries, myself. Let's see....
Atinous (The Odyssey)
Eurymachus (The Odyssey)
Friend (20th Century Boys)
Right, now that the last few spots have been filled, there's not much left to do but to start the tournament. Although, before doing that I humbly request a moderator to lock this thread and if any of you want to replace a character with another one, feel free to send me a pm (or email) with your new choices. However, you'll only have until tomorrow to do so, because I want this show on the road before the weekend. Ok?
