Because they're suckers for cute girls doing cute things and are emotionally effected by forced drama and random sad scenes.

Nah, much as I like Kanon, I'm still trudging slowly on watching this series, but if you can recommend some romance drama anime shows besides RomeoXJuliet, I'd gladly put those in front of Clannad on my must watch list.
