I've read One Piece and a good chunk of Black Jack, but I need to check out the other 2 before I can make a proper ranking, here. These matches are open for up to a week, right? In that case I figure that'll be enough time for me to check out the first volumes of the other 2 series to give them a fair shake.

Zatch Bell (Probably one of my favorite series from a guy that doesn't get enough recognition. For a series that has a lot of character, the author does make good use of them and make sure they have their time in the limelight. Also, that ending still makes me cry every time.)

Excel Saga- Volume 1 was good, and I plan to read more as soon as I'm done with college by next week
Full Metal Panic! Sigma- A surprisingly good adaptation of the light novels in light of a new anime that we'll never get
Kaiji- Insanely addicting for what it is, though admittedly it does use a lot of cheap writing tricks, but I still enjoy the fuck out of it
Psyren- Pretty decent shonen from what I've read of it, but so far I haven't read enough of it just yet to rank it over the others

Rurouni Kenshin
Monster
Shonan Junai Gumi
Yu Yu Hakusho

My god, this is an amazing round, and it was so tough to pick.

I love Yu Yu Hakusho to death, but at the end of the day I'm more of a fan of the anime for its improvements over the manga, even though the manga was still excellent up until the end of the Chapter Black arc. I still would have put YYH higher, to be honest, but since its already a very popular series on the whole with tons of recognition, I wanted to show some more support to SJG, a very underrated series, even if I know it won't win.

At the end of the day, though, I think that most people can agree that all 4 series in this round are excellent manga in their own rights.

I admit that my high ranking of Dragon Ball in this match is based solely on nostalgia. I'm not sure how much I'd like it if I read it today, but it was the first manga that I was genuinely into. Plus, I still need to read more of Hunter and Recca (I've watched all the episodes of the original Hunter X Hunter anime, but that shouldn't really count for this tournament).

I read a bit of Ichi the Killer and its pretty good. I should read more of it when I get the chance. Its probably a "better" series than the shonen stuff on here on the whole. That said, I should also mention that I'm extremely biased, so my ranking is:

Dragon Ball
Hunter X Hunter
Ichi the Killer
Flame of Recca

I should also mention that I think Recca is a good manga, but it was up against tougher competition this round. Overall, though, this was another great round with some really tough picks (at least for me), being that it featured 2 classic shonen and possibly one of the only few good contemporary shonen series out there. And of course it also features a highly renowned seinen manga, so of course that adds some stiff competition as well.

It's been over ten days and this thread has seen little update or activity. Since I like this idea and don't want to see it die, I decided to read the first chapter of each of these manga in order to vote this round, if only so that maybe they'll be enough points to move onto the next (more interesting to people perhaps?) round/s.

Wow, another great round!

Hunter X Hunter - In my top ten favorite manga list. Inconsistent as a whole, unfortunately, but nonetheless it shines at it's best in terms of story and character development, and I'd say you'd be hard pressed to find smarter fights than the ones in this in any other manga in the shonen demographic.
Rurouni Kenshin - I've been loving the story so far, but I've only read ten volumes, and while I do like what I've read, right now I wouldn't say I feel stronger about it than Hunter X Hunter.
Hikaru no Go - I've been re-reading it after many years, and am honestly a little underwhelmed at the beginning volumes. Still, I know where things are going, and the journey is still great, but whether I'll consider it a favorite of mine ultimately remains unsure.
Apollo's Song- Tezuka's manga are awesome, but I haven't read this beyond a couple chapters yet, so I have to put it last by default.

Excel Saga - 2nd Favorite Manga. I dare you to find a smarter, well-crafted, and well-cast manga comedy. :e_hail: :h_hail: :el_hail:
Dragonball - 3rd Favorite Manga, and the single most influential work of fiction on my life ever.  :cyborg:
Great Teacher Onizuka - Onizuka is one of the greatest manga characters ever.  8)
Cromartie High School - Hilarious...but I've only read a few chapters, whereas I've read the full runs of all of the other three mangas (well, not completely with Excel Saga, of course, since the last volume hasn't been released in the States yet).  :sumi_drop:

Dragon Ball (Classic)
Excel Saga (Just started reading volume 3)
Great Teacher Onizuka (It's great, though the last 3rd of the manga dips just a little bit in quality)
Cromartie High School (Pretty amusing from what I read of it)

This was a tough round. I'm sure Cromartie is great, but I haven't read enough of it yet to properly compare it to the other 3 entries, admittedly, but those other 3 entries are some of the best manga I've ever read (even Excel Saga, which I'm still early on in), so it was hard to rank one over the other, but I decided to go with how I felt about them at this given time.

Same as VlordGTZ and Foggle! But I'll write it out anyway...

20th Century Boys - Not even a third way done with the story, and it's already becoming one of my favorite manga. Urasawa really is a master story teller!   :shakeshakeshake:
Akira - A masterpiece in terms of storytelling and artistic detail in comics...but I don't like the characters all that much. Which is why 20th, with it's great and memorable characters, wins out for me.  ;)
Slam Dunk - Basketball has never been more interesting, epic, and cool in fiction.  8)
Ode to Kirihito - I love Tezuka and all, but tough competition this round don't ya know. Besides, I've barely read much of it, and it's no Black Jack or Dororo...

Whoa, looks like another tough one. All those manga have amazing reputations...(quickly goes to read the first chapters of Lone Wolf and Cub and Beck because he hasn't gotten around to reading them yet)...so I wouldn't mind which of these moved on myself, but as far as I'd rank them right now:

Berserk - Of all the manga here, I've read this the most at 11 volumes, and it's all been really, really good so far, and the Golden Age arc is now of one my favorite arcs in manga, even if I don't feel like the series is one of my most favorite manga ever, yet.
Beck -  One of the choice manga (or stories in general) I've read that's impressively addicting straight out of the bat while still being in a "set-up" mode. Plus, it's simply incredible for making a story about music work in the soundless medium of manga. It takes real skill to pull that kind of schtick off, and that's a testament to the quality of the characters and story. Art's a little weak though...
Lone Wolf and Cub -  I really need to read more of this...
Fruits Basket - Luck of the draw. I've only ever read a few volumes, and haven't read more of it in over two years. At this time, I can't in good conscience say I like it better than the rest of the manga in this match, which I've read recently, despite how much I like it and it's anime. Sorry, Tohru...

There will be an odd number of manga in round three, right? Is one match going to have 5 entries, or will they be divided up some other way?

In any case, Round 3 is gonna be a toughie. I'm expecting a lot of cruel rounds...

EDIT: After some thought, and more reading, I've decided to change my vote to Samurai Executioner.
Title: Re: Greatest Manga Series
Post by: gunswordfist on September 30, 2013, 01:35:43 PM
Samurai Executioner. A manga that's:

drawn more realistically than many other manga and has aged perfectly

has no annoying manga tropes

has tons of great stories that give new secondary characters a good spotlight

doesn't have action as a replacement for a good writing (the hero goes multiple volumes until he has his first real fight)

A main character that uses his wits and experience he gains over the series to solve many difficult situations.

This has to make it to the next round. SE is the first manga I've ever read and what got me into manga. : )

With the next round we're down to 17 titles, so you're correct about the odd number.

"I would have also nominated Hunter X Hunter to get a Togashi manga in here, but going by the anime thread, only about 3 people on this board give a shit about that series, so I doubt that it would make it past the first round, anyways."  - Ensatsu-Ken, Greatest Manga Series: Nomination Thread.

Well, E-K, aren't you glad you nominated it after all?  :il_hahaha:

Anyway, my picks for this round:

Dragonball - Cause I LOVE it, and I'm biased as hell.  :awesome:
Monster - Cause I LOVE it, just not quite as much as Dragonball.
Black Lagoon - Cause I love it, but prefer the anime.

Monster
Dragonball
Black Lagoon

I LOVE Monster and Dragonball, so it was hard picking between them for me. I really like Black Lagoon, but personally I don't consider it to be on the same level of quality as those other 2 series; it's not nearly as good at dark story-telling as Monster, nor does it have the wit and charm of something like Dragonball (though, to be fair, it's not supposed to). I feel bad, because in almost any other round I'd probably rate this manga higher, but overall that's what happens when you pit 3 excellent manga against each other.

Monster is obviously going to move on anyway. The only other person who'd put Excel Saga first this match is Foggle.  ;)

Then I am adding insult to injury. That's even better.

Time to wrap this up. Here are the results:

Monster: 22 pts
Excel Saga: 14 pts
Pluto: 12 pts

And now, without further ado, I give you:

The Final Match

20th Century Boys

Vs

Monster

Tough choice, but in the end I have a slight preference for Monster. However, seeing as both of these titles are among my favorite manga I'll be satisfied regardless of the outcome.

Didn't we already do a best villain tournament just a year ago or so?

Pharass expressed interest in doing another one.

It ended in June 2011. I, for one, would be down for another Villain Tournament since I never participated in it (before I joined dontcha know).  :humhumhum:

Sorry for dragging this out, I just wanted to make sure that everyone who was interested had gotten a chance to vote before I wrapped this up. Anyway, here it is, the winner of the coveted title of Animation Revelation's Greatest Manga Series:

Monster

(https://animationrevelation.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs14.postimg.org%2Fimtk2smch%2Fnaokiurasawa_monster.jpg&hash=cc8904b1b681f6a2582f0373428ef4356c20466a)

A well-deserved victory, indeed. I should probably write something in detail about the winner, but at the moment I'm not sure what to write. Is there anything I can say about this comic that's not stating the obvious? It's Monster, one of the finest tales that the ninth art-form has given us and the magnum opus of a genius storyteller. Thank you, Naoki Urasawa. Thank you.

And thank you to all of you who participated in this tournament. I hope you enjoyed it, I certainly did.

It's my 2nd favorite manga of all time, and yeah, it deserves its victory. I'm still glad to see that 20th Century Boys made it to 2nd place, though.

Like there was any doubt who would win.  :awesome:

No, really, Monster does deserve that title. It's not my absolute most favorite manga (it's 7th), but it's definitely the most well-crafted and well-written story the medium has seen, or at least I've seen from the medium. This was a fun competition, and it actually got me to check out a lot of manga I had never read before, which is a plus. With this done, though, it seems we are back to just one competition after all this time...

It's still my favorite manga and one of the very best. A win well deserved.
