Title: Let's talk Disney movies!
Post by: talonmalon333 on January 04, 2011, 05:40:52 PM
:whuh:

Alright, here's the deal folks. I'm here to make men out of all you wimps. I'll name a Disney film, talk about it, and you'll give your opinions. There'll be no questions, no complaints, and no time for stragglers. Any comments you have can be directed at me, and if I don't like it, you're out!

ANY QUESTIONS?!

GOOD! The Disney movies will actually be my top ten favorites, starting from the bottom and working from the top. Today I will place #10, but tomorrow will move onto 9. With that out of the way, let us start.

#10

I know not all of you are the biggest fans of this one, but I really like it. It was, if I remember correctly, the beginning of the Disney Renaissance and started the line of their musicals. The animation is also nice.

I love "Part of Your World". It's such a nice song, and Disney seems to think the same. "Poor, Unfortunate Souls" is also a really good one. That's probably one of the better Disney songs. And of course there's "Under the Sea", though I prefer those first two.

Yeah there are some problems with it. Ariel isn't exactly the best character, and some parts aren't very memorable to me. The cover of the VHS is also questionable. LOL. But the good parts are enough for it to be on this list!

But I'm just a single voice in the crowd. What say you all?

It's good, but never been one of my favorites. I'd probably like Ariel more if she was a little smarter. A lot of her decisions ruin it for me at points.

I also don't think that the animation is all that nice. There's a lot of off-model shots, the early uses of CAPS were uneffective, and the water effects were a little lazy.

That said, there's quite a bit of good in the movie. The music is great, Sebastian is an entertaining character, Ursula is a fun villain, and there are some impressive sequences.

I don't think Little Mermaid will ever be a favorite, but I still actively rewatch it on occasions, and I'm usually entertained.

I guess I agree about the animation. There are FAR better looking films. As for water effects, as much as you might find it over rated, you gotta agree that Finding Nemo looks AMAZING. ;)

Well now we're going from hand-drawn to computer animated.

But yeah, the animation in Finding Nemo is great.

I thought the movie worked better than Hans Christian Andersen's original story, with Ariel wanting to be human so she can be like them and be with Prince Eric rather than so she can have a soul and be with the prince, her fate where she turns back into a mermaid instead of dying if Eric didn't  kiss her on the third day and the Sea Witch turned into a far more interesting character. But despite my signature is it one of my favorite Disney movies? Not really. I re-watched it recently and the best parts were with Ursula when she was scheming and plotting against King Triton, the song "Poor Unfortunate Souls" itself a ploy for her to somehow gain control of his throne. While the movie has some other fun parts too a lot of it seems like it would appeal to mostly children. And I agree with Avaitor that Ariel's not the sharpest female protagonist in movies. Hell even Pocahontas is stronger than her.

So yeah good movie but not in my opinion one of the best.

I like the original story. In fact I think it's working title was "Daughters of Air".

But I agree about the Sea Witch though.

For of all, might I mention importance? This was one of the earliest animated films ever, AND it was the first animated feature brought to us by Disney. Many films that came after are better, but this is still excellent. The animation is lovely. Also, the Queen is just plain scary, no matter what form she takes. :gonk:

If I had a problem, it would just be that Snow White herself isn't much of a character. She's a, shall I say, "supporting main character". She's the star, but she isn't much on her own. The seven dwarfs are more interesting.

What do you think of it? I sometimes can't believe it came out in 1937! That was... I think, 74 years ago!

I'm a bit confused about the payment for Ursula's services. Ariel gives up her voice, but only for the duration of that contract? How does that benefit Ursula? Or were all previous contracts nullified after Triton makes his offer?

I re-watched Snow White with my little sister very recently, and while I fully respect it as a classic and all that, I personally don't feel that it holds up that well, at least compared to the other Disney classics of its era. I mean, to be honest most of the Disney classics that were around when Walt himself was still alive kind of have 1-dimensional characters by today's standards, but in that regard I do realize that those characters are meant to be archetypes, anyways. Still, aside from some truly spectacular animation that definitely holds up better than ever even today, I kind of feel spoiled by a lot of the later Disney films that came after Walt's era. I still enjoy the classics for what they are, though.

You like the Disney Renaissance films more then the Golden Age ones?

Yes, I enjoy the Disney tales that try to evolve and flesh out their characters more than the ones that are purely traditional fairy-tales who's only characters are all archetypes without any real personality.

In other words, I prefer something like The Hunchback of Notre-Dame to Cinderella and Snow White. The only golden age Disney films that really hold up for me in terms of enjoyment that well are Sleeping Beauty (mostly because of Malificent) and Fantasia.

I think Pinocchio is one of their best, and the scariest with no doubt. :)

Not part of the Golden Age or the Renaissance. This movie was made during that... awkward period between both. Still, it cannot be overlooked.

Alice is a lovely young child.  And you have to feel bad for what she goes through. Cause this is a VERY wild film. It's about the insanity of the world, but with more taste then shows like, say, Ren and Stimpy or Family Guy.

It's a little darker then many others. I can't pick a favorite part cause I love it all. But the ending is quite memorable. I also like the scene where she is unable to get a cup of tea. This film is just a great wide!

There'll be differing opinions on this one. I think it's awesome!

Bambi tells a nice little story. And I have to admit, it was a big part of my childhood. Plus, the places in it always looked lovely. Especially... that scene... you know, the saddest moment in the history of Disney?

Disney is awesome, and this movie proves it. I find it to be one of Walt's finest. When was it made? 1942? They don't make 'em like they used to!

To be honest, I'd say Mufasa's death is way more dramatic and sad. Since Simba actually saw his dead father and was begging him to "wake up".

Though I will say that gunshot is a very chilling sound.

I'd say a lot of Bambi's mother's death just has to do with the atmosphere. It's... so sad.

Now, now, before you start questioning me, nowhere in this thread did I say the list would only consist of Disney's main animated canon. Pixar is part of it and, to me, feels like Disney just as much as anything else you've seen here.

In case I need to say it again, I see the Toy Story series as the heart of Pixar. Nothing else they've done comes close. This movie is just wonderful. I love Woody and Buzz. Over the course of the film, you grow a serious attachment to all of the characters.

I honestly hate the fact that this isn't in the top 5. But oh well. There's no way anything you've already seen on the list can top it in my book. It's an incredible, and very important, achievement!

Hopefully it's clear as to why I had to keep Toy Story out of the top 5. Cause this here is pure awesomeness. ;D

It's great the whole way through. My only problem is that it peaks immediately when the film starts, with "Circle of Life", so the rest isn't quite as good. But it's still awesome! And I love the other songs, too! This movie has some of the best music.

I'd also like to mention that the final fight between Simba and Scar is COOL. Seriously. Though it's still true that Simba would have had an easier time if Scar didn't cheap shot him.

ANYWAY. What say ya'll?

I don't know. I don't consider the Circle of Life to be the peak of the movie at all. Its just a great opening, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it the true peak of the movie. Honestly, when it all comes down to it its just an opening song. Its nice to see its message of how all living things work in unison in one way or another, but it wasn't so great that it made me enjoy the rest of the movie less. On the contrary, it wasn't even my favorite song in the film, as that honor goes to Be Prepared. I like how this is one of the few Disney films that made its villain smart enough to successfully kill off an important character. If anything Scar killing Mufasa was the peak of the film for me.

That's fine. Personally, I think it's Disney's best song ever. I can't pick what I like best about it between the beginning or the end of the song.

Yeah, that whole stampede scene is amazing. The music works perfectly with it, and it's just so intense. They really shined with the animation there.

And as for Toy Story, after re-watching it recently, I can say that it really is a great movie. Maybe it's because I'm an "adult" now, but the movie really made me nostalgic. The characters were wonderful as well, like you said.

While my friends and I were watching the first Toy Story together before we saw 3, they noted how clever the script was in pretty much all regards. The Buzz Light Beer line is one joke you wouldn't even think about on your first few views, for one thing. It's a simple but very well done kids movie that I think can appeal to anyone at any age, and the sequels greatly expand on it.

And I still think that the animation in The Lion King is in a class by itself. Combined on top of the atmosphere and Zimmer's excellent score, and the stampede scene probably has the best use of CAPS in the studio's history.

Picking a favorite scene from the movie is impossible, since even brief seconds of it have enough to gush about for ages, but that entire sequence was brilliant.

It takes quality like this to surpass The Lion King! ;D

I find this to be one of the best, easily. The whole film is wonderful. "When You Wish Upon a Star" is such a nice song, and is probably on par with "Beauty and the Beast" as the most known Disney songs.

One thing I'll always note is that this, by a country mile, is Disney's scariest film. First you have Stromboli, who's REALLY scary, especially in the scene after the play. And then you have all of the children on the island being bad. Remember what happens to them?

But in my opinion, the part that takes the cake as the scariest is the Monstro scene. I STILL find it to be scary? Not sure what part of the whole scene is scariest though. A notable part is when you just see it lying on the bottom of the ocean. Then there's the part where it's enraged... UGH, this whole movie is scary. And that makes it all the better in the end! :)

I could say a few things, but I'm just going to copy and past what I said on another site. SPOILERS AHEAD.

"Well I feel like giving a summary of my experience with this movie since the end of Toy Story 2. Let me start by saying I loved the first two movies, although I've almost always liked the first one more, mostly due to the competition between Woody and Buzz. But anyway, after seeing the second movie back in 1999, a third movie was expected. But then we heard nothing about it for years. I believed for the longest time that it was canceled, although I heard a few times that it was still scheduled.

Then a few years back we heard official news about it (I think it might have been 2007). To be honest I was really worried that they'd blow it, considering most Disney sequels are usually unworthy. However I was intrigued by the plot of Andy leaving for college and having to do something with his toys. That's what Toy Story 2 was leading up to, after all.

I didn't think a whole lot about Toy Story 3 until we got the first trailer, either in 2008 or 2009. Just seeing that the trailer had the same feel as the classics gave me hope that this movie would be good. Then, towards the end of last year, Toy Story and Toy Story 2 were re-released in theaters in 3D together, plus a real preview for the third movie. It was then when I was truly really optimistic about this movie. Up until it hit theaters this past 2010 summer, I felt that it didn't have to be as good as the first two movies to satisfy me. Because back then, I apparently knew that it wouldn't be as good as Toy Story and most likely Toy Story 2.

And then I saw it in June. Well, let me say this. Soon after seeing it I realized that it was surely better then Toy Story 2, an incredibly impressive feat already. And after thinking about it more, I ultimately decided that I liked it even more then the original, something I never imagined and told myself wouldn't happen. It just blew away my expectations. It was funny, but also emotional. I think my favorite part was the scene where they believed they were going to die. I was really on the edge in those moments. But the ending is a close second. At first I expected Woody to leave with Andy and the others to go up to the attic. I felt that was a nice little goodbye between Woody and Buzz, along with the others. However, the ending we truly got was better. As I said in another thread, it's the only movie I can think of that made me feel like this..."

(Except now that I think about it, I prefer the ending slightly over the incinerator scene.)

The Little Mermaid? The Lion King? The Little Mermaid?
Totally.

Alright everyone. Now we get down to the TOP TWO! I know it's early, but it's now Wednesday, so I'm fine putting this up now. NOW, announcing #2!

Beauty and the Beast. Ahhh, what a lovely film. This is easily my second favorite. :)

I could talk about it for hours. First of all, this is such a classic story, a "tale as old as time". And is has somewhat of a... mysterious aura to it. I don't know. Maybe it's cause of the stain glass windows. Either way, I love it.

The animation is also great, mostly during the film's signature piece, "Beauty and the Beast". My personal favorite, though, might be "Be Our Guest". Such a well written song it is, from the choral parts, to the instruments, it's awesome, especially the key change at the end. The music in general is amazing in this film, tied with The Lion King for my favorite.

And the characters are also wonderful, people that you grow attached to. I often have trouble really calling Belle the lead in the show, cause in some ways, it's the Beast's story. But anyway, I'd like to mention this: Belle is the greatest Disney female character. To me she doesn't get a whole lot of competition, the only one being the lovely Giselle from Enchanted.

Then there's Gaston. I love this guy. He's such a jerk, but he's completely human and you understand what he's doing, as cruel as it may be. I consider him one of Disney's best villains. Also, the voice for him is perfect, especially his bass singing voice. Awesome. 8)

Anything else I need to cover? ... I think I got it all, and I don't want to keep you for too long. Just know that it'll take something BIG to take the crown, considering how much I adore this one! :)

I'll probably post #1 in an hour. In the meantime, does anyone have anything to say for #2?

Ta-dah! My number one favorite Disney film! The classic! The masterpiece of artistic expression! FANTASIA! ;D

The film is about the music. Picking a favorite part of this is always incredibly challenging. However the first piece, "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor", is wonderful. Instead of using regular images such as animals, this piece is abstract, stimulating the images one imagines when listening to the music. It's an amazing piece given such delicate care.

"Night on Bald Mountain/Ave Maria" is another favorite. Honestly, this was always one of the scenes I remembered most. The animation is amazing, probably better then in the rest of the film. Also, the choice to pair "Night on Bald Mountain" with "Ave Maria" was an amazing idea. They are complete opposites, yet they work off of each other marvelously. "Ave Maria" is so... beautiful. And once it ends, the movie ends. There are no closing words or credits. It's just... perfect. :)

"The Sorcerer's Apprentice" holds a lot of nostalgia value for me. In fact, the whole movie does, too. I used to watch it as a child. But until recently, there had to have been at least a 10 year period where I never saw the whole thing again. And when I saw it again, it... didn't disappoint. :)

This is easily the most under rated Disney film. It lost money initially, and I completely understand why many wouldn't like it. However, I truly believe this is Walt Disney's greatest work.

Considering that my brother recently got a Blu-Ray player, I'm half tempted to get the Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack for Tangled.

So Fox and the Hound is getting a Blu-Ray release later this year.

Here's the funny thing: for bonus features, instead of making new ones, Disney is just going to package the sequel alongside with it, so this way you have to buy them together.

Classic Disney stratagem, am I right? :sly:

Have they done that yet, or is this the first?

This is not a trend I want to carry on.

Well they did combine the Fantasias together, but 2000 is an actual DAC, doesn't completely suck, and both movies have new bonus features as well as Destino.

I can guarantee that all FATH is getting on it's release are ports from the last DVD and the sequel without knowing anything else so far.

So Bambi comes out on Tuesday. I have about $50 saved, got my coupon printed out, and had a game plan.

Then I officially got Maiden tickets for April, so I now have to wait to get it for later. Maiden comes before anything, sorry.

Anyone else getting Bambi, though?

Oh, and on another note, I love this image.

Got Bambi, but wow if they're putting out a Lion King pack like that, it should come with a no-scratch warranty.
