Title: Opening & Ending Themes
Post by: Spark Of Spirit on May 23, 2011, 04:37:00 PM
So does anybody got any favorite anime OPs or EDs they want to talk about? There are a lot of really good ones, and a lot of really bad ones, of course, but which do you like best?

EDIT: Links are all dead.  :(

Desensitized mentioned some ones that I would have mentioned myself, such as YYH (obviously). But I have some other favorites of my own. For one thing, I do love a good English dub of an already good Japanese opening. I think one of my favorites is Vic Mignogna's version of the first One Piece opening (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0ov2ZIgC88) as well as his version of the third opening (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5svxuS3L9_s&feature=related) as well.

Speaking of English dubbed openings, has anyone seen this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uw7IKUd6WZ4&feature=feedlik) fan dub video of the first 5 Digimon season openings? Don't just assume it sucks because its a fan dub, because to my own surprise it was done extremely well (IMO). Check it out for yourselves.

As for some other openings that I like:

Bleach (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTv_LorOv5s) (Opening 1)- Don't make any mistakes, I do pretty much hate this series, now, but I won't ever say that I dislike this opening, because I still think its really addictively good, with some pretty good animation and stellar visuals. It actually feels a bit creative in its own right.

Bokurano (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QROzjQfA8nc)- I haven't seen the anime for this series yet (and I still need to finish the manga, now that I think about it, especially since I only had a few chapters left), but I did check out this opening and its pretty brilliant, as it really does seem to perfectly capture the feeling and tone of this series.

Level E (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gi4US7iRc6k)- Consider this the most recent opening that has me addicted.

And, as for my classic pick, I personally have to admit that I love this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=neldKRXo-YI) particular version of the Lupin III opening.

And also, this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHy--NKdSnA)....It may be my favorite opening for any shonen series ever, personally.

I've heard it a gazillion times but I still watch the entire first opening for Higurashi
Higurashi no naku koro ni (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRtsIJXrhqc)

I still prefer the regular single video over the anime opening for FMA:
Rewrite - Asian Kung-Fu Generation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2vblPWGaDg)

This one's cute from Boys Be..., probably since it doesn't have anime characters in it.
Daijoubu - Aki Maeda (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6591H3ViEA)

I like the visuals for the first Soul Eater opening song
Resonance - T.M. Revolution (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMK_xzkYM8s)

FMP Fumoffu's opening is one of my all time favorites both video and music
"Sore Ga Ai Deshou (I Guess That's Love)" by Shimokawa Mikuni (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmGqoT3izgk)

Excel Saga but of course
"Ai (Chuuseishin)" by Excel Girls (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K50l-9RNBo8)

Closing theme for Le Portrait de Petit Cosette
Houseki - sung by Marina Inoue (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_l1JiWt7MMo)

Here's her more popular song used on FMA Brotherhood
I like the full album version but couldn't find it among the youtube covers. Closest I came was this video that was attached to a rhythm game, so the drums were added.
Again - Yui (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rm4AbPEhfPk)

Right now, I'll have to go with the opening to Armored Trooper Votoms (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8hwDQJRU7E) . It's one of those openings that I find, sets the tone for the show perfectly, one determined man struggling against an overwhelming power. Awesome.

Big bump, I know.

Most of my links are dead now, but has anyone else heard this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2A_Xwg-KWg&feature=related) before? Really well done fan work.

Also, I'm surprised this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=887C9HKY5yY) didn't show up in the thread. The first OP and ED are perfect, IMO.

While its too early for me to consider it a favorite (after all, some stuff that I initially like gets boring for me to listen to after just a few weeks), I REALLY like the new opening of One Piece so far. Its called "We Go (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGCBAxYpVxA)" which is obviously showing that its the successor to the series' first and main opening theme song "We Are (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NokxznEqHk)" and its also sung by the same singer. I like how reminisicent it is of that opening while also adding in a lot of new flavor since it represents the Straw Hat pirates going into the new world. At the same time, it clearly shows elements of the older parts of the series, so it has this very intertwined feeling that makes this opening feel like it could fit the whole series in general rather than just a specific arc of the series like how some songs feel (if that makes any sense).

I guess I'll give this a shot for now. Here are a few that I've enjoyed

Zudadan! Kinnikuman (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjjkLZsKOf8) I just like how it showed off Suguru's progression from being a bumbling idiot coward to this great fighter that will help his friends. Just compare it to the first opening (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYpfr62ZJcg&feature=related) where Suguru is coward and an idiot.

Baka Survivor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocdJrcVMKjY)- I enjoyed it more than the first opening to Bo-Bobo. Survival of the idiots. Kind of a shame that they didn't play this during the Toonami run.

Outlaw Star's opening. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDwd4KK1SUQ)  The one song from the Toonami era that stuck out the most for me before

Makafushigi Adventure (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPvVdsrqTeo&feature=channel_video_title) Truly a great theme that caught how whimsical the first Dragonball series was.

Also, echoing EK's pick for We Go being a great opening.

There's a lot of openings I like, but I pick:

Opening part:

Tsubasa Tokyo Revelations - Synchronicity http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYY5WCXPHOU (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYY5WCXPHOU) . The opening is so upbeat yet, have a slight amount of sorrow.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai - Naraku no Hana http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kk3Nmu8Kq6Y (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kk3Nmu8Kq6Y) . I love the tone of this song.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica (or Puella Magi Madoka Magica either way) - Connect http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btNSYi2QMTM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btNSYi2QMTM) .  :swoon: I LOVE THIS ONE! So sweet and nice.....

Cardcaptor Sakura - Platinum http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQjCFvaNwJQ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQjCFvaNwJQ) This one is also soft toned and nice to me.

Bleach - Rolling Star http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5-Gocgpu5M (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5-Gocgpu5M) and Change http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5qaCj6ihlo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5qaCj6ihlo) Hard to decide which since I liked both :rtard:

Lucky Star - Of course, it's Motteke! Sailor Fuku http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zJXi-FU7sA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zJXi-FU7sA)

Ending part:

Cardcaptor Sakura - Honey http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-eVrtXR22I (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-eVrtXR22I) Listening to this makes me sleepy.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai - Taishou.a http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-u1088pVo-o (//http://)
So calming....

Eyeshield 21 - A Day Dreaming and Flower.

and more....

Maybe I'll post links later, when I'm not in school and am less lazy.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (Kai) - Both the original and the Kai opening are brilliant! The original is just twisted and strange, while Kai's is sad sounding and overall beautiful.

Yu Yu Hakusho - Need I say more?

Hunter x Hunter - The original opening isn't really THAT special, but it's nice.

Romeo x Juliet - Best opening ever.

Monster - The opening is great, but I REALLY like the first ending theme. Kind of iffy about the second one currently.

Pokemon - The first opening is kinda cheesy, but it's AWESOME. I will stand by that forever. B)

Let me go old-school with this, an opening to "Dokonjo Gaeru", a 1970s show produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha (at the time they were simply known as "Tokyo Movie")

Title: Re: Opening & Ending Themes

So, it looks like the version of that One Piece opening that I posted before was an incomplete version of the opening since Toei hadn't finished animating it all in time for the premiere of the new arc. Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLC5lBXaMqs) is the complete version of that opening, though it only has about 10-20 seconds of alternate footage (replacing the part where Luffy was just running for that amount of time), but its still pretty cool because it shows off the other Straw Hat pirates which I felt was an element missing from this new opening.
Title: Re: Opening & Ending Themes
Post by: Daxdiv on October 17, 2011, 11:31:08 PM
With that new element they added, the opening does feel like a true spiritual successor to We Are! One of my favorite parts of We Are was that part where you saw the other members kick the asses of the random pirates.

I consider this to be in my list of best theme songs of all time.

"Pyunpyun Maru" (doesn't translate to anything, it's the name of the main character) is an anime that ran on 7/3/1967-9/18/1967 (12 episodes) and 12/29/1969-3/30/1970 (14 episodes).

All 26 episodes were actually made at the same time but the network cancelled it after only a dozen due to poor ratings, as well as the fact that the premise was freaking insane (the show's an early example of non-sense anime). But few years later they needed a show in one of its timeslot so they dug out the unaired episodes and broadcast them.

It was produced by Toei Animation, one of their early shows.

The more I think about it, I think this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukorWvykHn4) is one of my favorite OPs. Not exactly sure why, but it never fails to get me pumped up.

Oh yeah, and huge bump.

I didn't know you've seen Slayers.

The NEXT OP is awesome; just a great combination of quick scenes and a great song to accompany it (I especially love the part with Gaav where it flickers between his human and demonic forms). That said, my favorite Slayers OP is still the first one, which has a lot to do with how much I used to rewatch the first season since that was the only season Colors TV ever aired (though, I still never got tired of watching it back then). It's hence the opening I most associate with the series and get a rush of memories and excitement over.

The first opening with the full guitar solo at the end was great, and I liked it quite a bit. Next's opening just hits all the marks for me for favorite openings. Also helps that there's a few good shots of Xellos and Zelgadis in it.

You can actually pinpoint the moment Naruto fell off a cliff by the OPs. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JD9U0purdr8)

They get boring starting with #5 and outright forgettable beyond it. Looks like Pierrot got bored with the series around the same time Kishimoto did.
Title: Re: Opening & Ending Themes
Post by: LumRanmaYasha on May 17, 2017, 04:22:37 PM
I actually like a lot of Naruto's openings. Opening 5 "Youth's Rhapsody" is easily my favorite of the original Naruto openings and I still regularly listen to the full version of the song. The ones after are lame, yeah, but it's no surprise considering those were the openings for the 85 episode stretch of pure filler material.

As for Shippuden, the first opening "Heroes Comeback" is by far the best and I wish I could find the full version of the song on youtube that's not a dumb nightcore remix so I can listen to it more often. I also like the third, fifth, sixth, seventh, and fourteenth openings even though I don't care much for the arcs they're representing. The rest are either just okay or forgettable, especially most of the ones after the Pain arc (besides 14, which I found stylistically cool and the song quite catchy).

The other night, I clearly had nothing better to do and went through all of Shippuden's OPs. Ones like 14 were catchy but I don't think any of them really ever beat out "Heroes Comeback" for me. And the less said about "Distance" or "Sign" (Ops 2 and 6), the better...
