Title: The Flintstones
Post by: Avaitor on December 27, 2010, 11:00:58 PM
Been watching season 2 quite a bit lately. Still mighty funny stuff in my opinion.

I can go on with some of my favorite episodes if you want me to?

The Flintstones is really funny to watch when you're high. Try it.

No, Blues Clues is funny when you're high.

Flintstones is cool though.  Saw my first episode in several years a few days ago on Boomerang, despite the fact that I have the first couple seasons on DVD.

I appreciate it and how important it may be. But I honestly have to agree with the opinion that it has not aged well. Not saying it's bad though.

The later seasons especially haven't aged well, I'll grant you. The increasing reliance on gimmicks and guest stars are pretty awkward to sit through now, although some are in a funny way.

I think the first few seasons are still quite entertaining, and I even like Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm. Some jokes are a little corny and forced, but the Flintstones and Rubbles are good characters and there are some great lines in there.

Still a great Stone Age classic to watch, even though times have changed greatly.
Before I end this post, let me bring on the... Yabba Dabba Doo!

So in case you guys haven't heard, Seth MacFarlane is helming a Flintstones reboot that will air in 2013.

I honestly think it could work. Seth seems to be a big fan of the show, it could use some recent recognition like the Looneys and Scooby are getting, and his early Hanna-Barbera work is quite good. I just really don't like that it's airing on Fox. I know it's MacFarlane and all, but I don't think it's the right place for the show. I really would prefer it if CN or even ABC got it.

Still, it's far too early to make a claim like this, since the show isn't airing for a couple of years, and we know very little about it right now.

I'm not really excited because all of his projects have the exact same writing and animation style. I have no reason to believe this will be any different.

Hmm, would I rather watch this or a live-action Jetsons movie? (seen Yogi Bear movie already)

Was just doing some digging around on the internet, and I found this (http://www.filmthreat.com/features/1187/).  I really want to watch it now, and there's a copy of it on YouTube, but the ship's internet isn't fast enough to load the video.  I've already seen all the Winston Cigarettes videos and shit, but this seems much more interesting to me.

MacFarlane might just be the most polarizing figure in animation. Seriously; the news of this reboot broke, what, 2-3 days ago, and already the original thread on TZ has over six pages of response (mostly complaining)?

Eh... myself, I don't really see this as being such an overly big deal. He's not the greatest talent in the industry by any means, and I find his political preachiness to be a little overbearing at times, but still; he's not the talentless hack that everyone is making him out as. I'd be lying if I said Family Guy and American Dad didn't make me laugh. Sure, Cleveland sucks, but they can't all be winners.

I think he can pull it off; as others have said, I'm more inclined to believe he'll make this as faithful an adaptation as within his means. After all, he is a fan of the original series; one would think he'd try not to screw it up that badly.

Oh man, I've got to see that. Sounds like a trip.

And as for the new series, it's still way too early to make a call. We have at least 2 years for the show to air, and people are already crying fowl on it. Can we at least wait to see some clips or even early artwork before we decide whether this will be good or not? I'm interested, but come on.

Edit: Here's part 1. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6TI2dkk2MA) The second is in the suggestions bar. Really interesting so far.

I found this in one of Jerry Beck's FB groups. (http://www.scribd.com/doc/161810714/The-Flintstones-First-Fourteen-Episodes-Complete-Uncut) These are scans for a booklet made for a LaserDisc set of the first 14 episodes of the show. There's some great tidbits in here to read if you're a fan, and even if you're not, John K and Earl Kress didn't really keep some of the commentary safe for kids.

Apparently George Nicholas was HB's horniest animator.

Warner Bros. developing a new animated Flintstones movie. (https://www.amctheatres.com/movie-news/2014/05/warner-bros.-developing-animated-flinstones-movie-with-will-ferrell)

Okay. At least it's animated. Could be good.

Who wants to bet it'll be CGI?

There's nothing wrong with it being CGI so long as it's well done CGI that does a good job of rendering the characters in that format.

I was about to say that I hope it's not CGI.

Remember the WWE crossover movie that was announced a while ago? Here's a trailer. (http://blogs.indiewire.com/animationscoop/trailer-the-flintstones-and-wwe-stone-age-smackdown-20141201)

I actually think this looks pretty okay. The designs take a little getting used to, but I think they look good in motion, even vibrant in some parts. And the voice acting shows promise in some parts (Tress MacNeille as Bamm Bamm is an inspired choice), but others, not so much. Barney in particular sounds way off. But I'm still at least partially interested.

Also, I like seeing Hoppy again. I always found him to be a cute companion for Dino, but he's often forgotten.

CM Punk is still in the movie, despite not being part of the company anymore. OK.

The trailer honestly makes me a fairly interested in watching it. It looks like it could be a fun flick. Barney's new voice rubs me the wrong way, though.

The movie is out today, and the reception seems pretty decent. Fans of the franchise are happy, even if it is nothing special. It also comes with HD restoration of two classic episodes, which is even more of an incentive for me to buy it, which I'm considering.

I've been seeing previews for this during commercials while watching wrestling. Honestly it didn't look all that great to me. Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know. I'm not a fan of the original show, though.

I finally got around to watching this, and I liked it. Not loved, obviously, and you do have to be a fan, or at least appreciate the franchise to get into it. Also being a fan of wrestling helps, but that's never been my thing (I recognized everyone here, but that's about as far as I go), and I got a kick out of it.

This wasn't a laugh riot, and there are some corny gags in there, but enough jokes worked. It also gets the core dynamic down pretty well, as the characters are nailed almost perfectly. Fred in particular has that perfect balance between jackass and sweetheart that could make or break the show if done unevenly. The designs aren't exactly how I would have liked to see the characters again, but they fit pretty well (Barney mostly aside) and look strong in motion. The only real roadblocks in animation tends to come from the backgrounds, which are a little too rubbery to really fit.

And the voice acting is pretty solid, again excepting Barney. I give Kevin Michael Richardson credit for trying Mel's original voice for Barney, but that doesn't really fit the character anymore. But Jeff Bergman is a great Fred, Tress and Grey find the right tone for Wilma and Betty, and even the wrestlers all do pretty well. The most surprising thing in terms of voice acting was hearing John O'Hurley as Mr. Slate, and it took until he did a decent take on the "FLINTSTONNNNNNNNNNNEEEEEEEE" yell before I could hear him as anything but J. Peterman. It's a little sad to hear someone else as Slate, especially as I checked to see that not only is John Stephenson still alive, but this is the first time that he didn't voice him, but he is in his 90's, so I understand.

Pretty much, I don't regret buying this, even if it's hardly a five star production. It's still nice to see The Flintstones again, and I hope that this isn't the last time we'll see the characters (we'll see if that feature film is made). This wasn't even an hour long, so despite feeling rather tightly paced, I can't really recommend buying it unless it's on sale, but if you do like the show and want to see more of Fred and Barney, go for it.

Besides, I don't mind the purchase, because I still have the classic episodes to check out in HD! I'll get to those soon.
