Title: Pop!
Post by: Spark Of Spirit on June 24, 2012, 02:09:19 PM
No this isn't a thread about that terrible N*Sync song nobody remembers, this is a thread about Bubblegum Pop! Let's list our favorite and least favorite songs from over the years from the humble 1950s, to the bumbling 2010s!

Everybody here knows one of my favorite (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HMcgpjeO48) pop artists. But I'm mostly a fan of her early material before she went more adult contemporary, though her last album was a Blues album so that was alright. But one thing I liked was how varied (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNgk90AdbV8) her material was always great (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EokAXyxfQlw). Her pre-solo stuff was more old school rock n roll with a rockabilly bent, which was also great.

But enough about my favorites, what about you?

I do like to listen to pop on occasion, but I don't know if can name any specific examples.  I have Sirius satellite radio, and on the lower end of the dial they have channels that are dedicated to playing pop songs by decade(40s on 4, 50s on 5, 60s on 6, and so on) and I like to scan these channels.  For instance, right now 90s on 9 is playing "Waterfalls" by TLC and Pop2K is playing "When it's Over" by Sugar Ray.

Oh, I know one.  I really like Bowling For Soup for some reason.

(High School Never Ends is playing right now).

I mentioned this song in another thread, but what do you think about it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UVNT4wvIGY) (before you skip it, I'll just say that it isn't Demi)? You've probably heard it, since it was #1 for a little while, but I'm curious as to what you think of it.

I see people talking shit about it a lot, and I actually change the channel when it comes on the radio(96x plays it a lot), so I never heard it all the way through before

Here's another one I see people talk shit about (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sv6dMFF_yts), but I actually kind of like it.  Even though I can't hear the song and not think about doing a flip in a Chevy.

Gotye is actually a really interesting indie artist that I've slowly been getting into. "Somebody That I Used to Know"'s success was a major fluke, considering how damn unusual it is from regular top 40, but it's a rather good song IMO.

.fun is meh to me though, but it is fascinating how two unconventional indie acts have chart topping songs in a row like this. It seems like every year you have at least one big indie hit in the top 40, like Foster the People last year, Neon Trees in 2010, and Kings of Leon's two big hits in 2009, and we never see said artists chart that high again. It seems like we got our two at the same time this year.

Oh yeah, aside from "Pumped Up Kicks", I do like Foster the People.  "Helena Beat", "Call it What You Want", and "Don't Stop(Color on the Walls)" are pretty cool songs.

Yeah, I don't mind Bowling For Soup, though I prefer their early (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okegPaZRzPs) stuff (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGgMuoqpQuo) more since it's less kitschy.

Oh god... it's my least favorite song of all time. lol

Some songs you hear consistently since your early childhood and you come to love them out of nostalgia. Others you hear even more than that, and they cause your eye to twitch the second they start playing and your hand to violently turn the radio station.

Aww man, I think it's a perfect song myself.

The only thing that really ruins it for my is that Jessica Simpson song.

Yeah, I love the song, but that Jessica Simpson butchering... ugh.
Title: Re: Pop!
Post by: Avaitor on June 28, 2012, 06:45:00 PM
1- Simon & Garfunkel- "Cecilia"
2- Peter Gabriel- "Sledgehammer"
3- The Beach Byos- "Heroes and Villains"
4- Prince- "I Would Die 4 U"
5- TLC- "Waterfalls"
6- Marvin Gaye- "Stubborn Kind of Fellow" (I could fill up the entire list with his work, really)
7- Madonna- "Like a Prayer"
8- Dusty Springfield- "Son of a Preacher Man"
9- Demi Lovato- "Catch Me"
10- No Doubt- "Spiderwebs"

Very tentative top 10.

Post by: Spark Of Spirit on June 28, 2012, 06:52:37 PM
Man, I totally can't get into anything Madonna has ever done. Her music is so boring for the most part and unexciting using shocking images to invoke reactions instead of just making quality music.

Spiderwebs is also a really cool song. Tragic Kingdom as a whole is pretty good, too.

Madonna's music videos are totally like that, but I actually quite like her 80's music.

That's the only Madonna song I like, actually.

And I can't stand "Jack and Diane", even as a kid I hated it.

Would it be better if I picked Paper In Fire?

I was unaware so many people hated that song.
Title: Re: Pop!
Post by: Commode on June 29, 2012, 01:46:35 PM
I'm afraid that I don't know that song, but I like "Pink Houses", or "R-O-C-K in the USA", or "Crumblin' Down", or "Authority Song", really just about any Mellencamp song but "Jack and Diane".  Don't really know why; it's kinda like how I really hated "Losing my Religion" as a kid, except I grew to like that song.

Also, who else likes Eddie Money?  I like to listen to some "Take Me Home Tonight" or Think I'm in Love" every once and awhile.

Post by: Spark Of Spirit on June 30, 2012, 05:31:30 PM
That would be this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myo9wXrNUP4), though I guess that's more classic rock than pure pop.
Title: Re: Pop!
Post by: Avaitor on June 30, 2012, 07:53:03 PM
The first thing that comes to mind when I hear "Paper in Fire" is vintage blues. Not what I'd really consider pop.
Title: Re: Pop!
Post by: Avaitor on July 02, 2012, 09:29:20 PM
Stuff I can't believe I forgot:

"Roxanne"- Easily the Police's best song.
"I Can Hear Music"- A sweet, overlooked Beach Boys track.
ANYTHING by the Buzzcocks- 'nuff said
"Kiss Me Dudely" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70e8_dUvYzI&feature=related) by Torche- Imagine if Dave Grohl wanted to make music like what he actually listens to rather than the safe alt rock he's been putting out for the past decade, but is in tune to the catchiness of the first couple of Foo albums. That's what Torche achieved with this album, and any other song could qualify here.
"We Didn't Start the Fire"- or insert any other Billy Joel classic here
Title: Re: Pop!
Post by: Spark Of Spirit on July 02, 2012, 09:43:24 PM
I'm more of a fan of Message In A Bottle. It was pretty much the only Police single that wasn't overplayed here.
Title: Re: Pop!
Post by: Avaitor on July 02, 2012, 09:45:45 PM
That's a really good one too. I love the first 2 albums but I get progressively more bored with each one after.

I actually own Ghost in the Machine on vinyl, primarily since Demi has a shirt with this very album on it, but I haven't played it once.

Post by: Nel_Annette on July 02, 2012, 09:57:10 PM
I like Synchronicity most. It just has the most amount of songs I love, though I like the well-known songs off the other albums just as much. So in my mind, it's one of those weird instances where a classic band peaked on their final album, as opposed to releasing decade after decade of mediocre material.
Title: Re: Pop!
Post by: Avaitor on July 03, 2012, 12:42:11 PM
Really? I think Synchroncity is as boring as anything. "Synchroncity II" is a cool song, but the rest is forgettable to me.
Title: Re: Pop!
Post by: Nel_Annette on July 03, 2012, 06:02:37 PM
Syncronicity I & II, Every Breath You Take, King Of Pain, Wrapped Around Your Finger... I like those songs. And that's almost half the album. More than I can say for the other four albums, which each have one or two songs I like while the rest won't do anything for me.

I was tinkering around with a one disc compilation for MJ, (The essential makes for a pretty good two disc comp) for when I just want the very best stuff.

1. Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough
2. Rock With You
3. Off The Wall
4. She's Out Of My Life
5. Billie Jean
6. Beat It
7. Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'
8. Human Nature
9. Thriller
10. Bad
11. Another Part Of Me
12. Leave Me Alone
13. The Way You Make Me Feel
14. Smooth Criminal
15. Jam
16. Black Or White
17. Remember The Time
18. Will You Be There?

Whaddaya think? I stuck with the four core albums since those are his best, IMO. They barely fit on one disc, too.
Title: Re: Pop!

That almost looks exactly like Number Ones.
Title: Re: Pop!
Post by: Spark Of Spirit on July 26, 2012, 07:52:08 PM
I wish Number Ones was that good. Missing Off The Wall, She's Out Of My Life, Human Nature, and Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' is lame. Also including Dirty Diana and Man In The Mirror over Leave Me Alone and Another Part Of Me is weak. Black Or White is also the only Dangerous cut which is insulting- HIStory gets more representation than it, for crying out loud, and that's his worst album.

I'm not really sure why he has so few good compilations, but I'm sure the focus on newer material over essential material does it.

Quote from: Avaitor on September 23, 2012, 11:29:05 AMhaha, a 5 star song from a Goliath rec? I'm a little surprised.
I'm not petty, for goodness' sake (I hope). 1-star people can be capable of having 5-star taste. (On occasion.)

Since everyone else this year has been recommending material from '11, '10, and earlier, I'm going to say my favorite "pop" artist/group right now is St. Vincent. "Cruel" got me to check out her previous work and... well, this should say everything (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1LHX5chlH0). Best song of 2009? If not, it's a fucking good contender. I went through her albums and, as usual, my loyalty is to the songs I like. I'm just not an album person. Anyway: wow again (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3Bi1DKGxuE). And again (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EN3tx-JYPz4). And... well, this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hw7UeOxTGuM) loses me around 3:30, but before that... Just one more (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YNoppwf8Pg). Okay, another one more (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDJWScc0r5w).

As for the rest of the pop scene now, I'm too busy trying to catch up on movies. But every now and then, I do check if there's any news on potential new releases from Rihanna (she's going on tour now so... a new album this year is probably not going to happen), Goldfrapp (god 2010 feels like ages ago), and Ke$ha. Although, I'm not loving the idea that her next album will be rock-oriented. She really has no problem with the whole Gaga-wannabe label, does she? Pity, since I thought Cannibal blew Born This Way out of the water (months before that album was even released).

Meanwhile, in the months of silence from Rihanna, Gaga, and Ke$ha, I'm expecting Kreayshawn to become the next big female star. She's out there, they're not. Or at least, I expect she will be.
Title: Re: Pop!
Post by: Avaitor on September 23, 2012, 12:19:38 PM
Well in regards to Ke$ha, her duet with Alice Cooper wasn't too bad. It was actually kind of promising, I thought.

I also happen to be quite ambivalent to her as a whole. I think a lot of her songs are obnoxious, but I think that's her intention, and that she's a lot smarter than she makes herself out to be. Plus her taste in music is surprisingly very solid. I believe she said that she's aiming for T. Rex-type rock in this album.

I didn't say anything about her videos. Is that how you believe most people connect with an artist/group? That the albums aren't solid resources in themselves?

Because I've definitely heard a lot of arguments that she's a terrible artist based on the fact that she's not attractive, she's too powerful, rude, sexual, immasculating, not "womanly" enough, etc. Nearly all of which were based on her image. And sure, an image can rub people the wrong way about any artist.

That's all I've got. Your arguments are just, literally, that extremely incomprehensible. Unless you're in your 60's or older, a sexist, or have chosen to block out the 80's because you hated that time period, you already understand what's entirely memorable about Madonna's music. You know the impact it had on the culture. You probably even have theories that she's one of the smartest women who's ever picked up a microphone, which is understandable since she's always been wiser than her years, knows music and listeners better than any artist who wasn't a producer, and so brave that no one's ever held her back.

And... you say her music isn't catchy or memorable? That is without question the laziest "criticism" I've ever seen anyone attempt to connect to this artist. But, it could work, if you really didn't like 80's pop that much. Somehow, I have the feeling I'm not meant to make that leap in logic but it's the only sensible one. Otherwise, your problem is with her image.

If you enjoy her music, more power to you!  :) I realized long ago that just because I don't like something doesn't mean that others are somehow lesser for liking it. To be fair I thought that one single of hers from a while back was catchy, even if it didn't stick with me.

But no, I don't really care for her music and I don't really have much of an issue at all with 80s music.

Hey, No-Personality, care to make a rating for this? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZ3cTwI9bIw)

She & Him are usually too poppy and saccharine for my tastes (yes, yes, even compared to Demi), and my interest in Zooey died out the moment New Girl started, but I still love this.

Like I might have said elsewhere, I am so far away from stuff that's trendy that I'll only be aware of the biggest names (and even then, I can only name you 1 Justin Bieber song)... however, I can feel that this trend has been a bit doing itself to death. Of course, I did notice the "2010" note in the video title. I hope we're pushing away from that kind of sound now because - to these ears - Bat for Lashes, Santogold, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, even Katy Perry have already done it. I thought her vocals were dull (very country-ish at times) and the verses were almost non-existent, so... it was unpredictable. But not very satisfying. The piano and guitar were great though:

That sounds about right. I mostly like the song for the video, just to see Zooey do ballet moves one minute, and dance like a Peanuts character the next, but like the rest of S&H, it's not that memorable or strong at all. I like good bubblegum pop as much as the next guy, but this is hardly that.
