Title: Video Game Music
Post by: talonmalon333 on December 31, 2010, 12:26:57 PM
After much thought I have decided upon my three favorite video game themes.

#3
Resident Evil (GameCube Version): Ending - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnraQ80iUOE&feature=related

#2
Super Mario Galaxy: Good Egg Galaxy - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GurdjJOhsQs

#1
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask: Last Day - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-dor7Fj3GM

Those themes are ones that I think will always stick with me. Especially #1 which I find to be the most powerful game song ever.

David Wise needs to make more VG music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8boRM6xRXg&feature=related)

Nintendo should hire him or something.

Badass songs that I keep forgetting to post in awesome video game musics threads.

The second level of the first House of the Dead, that sounds less sinister and more funky (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EppA0KI49xY&feature=related)

Stage 3-1 of Streets of Rage, with a flavor of nightlife (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K90j2VKSsbY&feature=related)

This mission music in Valkyria Chronicles that plays in suicide missions like luring in a battle tank or outrunning trench warfare (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLW3Gh5bIXI&feature=related)

Lilycove City from the 3rd generation of Pokemon. Proof that the game's soundtrack absolutely eclipses every other gen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2ut8s2hdSc)

I only remember this track because I never finished Breath of Fire II because I suck (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8RldqtvGsE&feature=related)

Sim City on the fucking SNES. A hardcore game because those natural disasters always fucked up your budget (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yev96V2Fipo)

The final boss battle in Mario and Luigi 1. Feel your hope drain away as you face that horribly tough bitch Bowletta (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZoVIWHgPn8&feature=related)

Video Game Music thread I see. Well, let's see what I can pick up for you guys.

Burst In Rock n Roll! Played during one of my favorite moments in Mother 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gl7ih1s0gwM)

I remember this music setting the mood to Lavender Town pretty well when I was a kid. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNJJ-QkZ8cM)

Cynthia's fight theme. An epic theme for such an epic fight. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whX6TVUDF-E)

Aran Ryan's theme. What can I say, I like the Irish rendition of the Punch-Out!! Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6IBoUU7KaI)

One of my favorite themes to Banjo-Kazooie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUgja4wkAO8)

Another case for David Wise being one of the best VG composers is this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hqZ6Gb-J-s&feature=related)...

Taking both the explosive mystic charms of Double Dragon music and applying the hard rocking and tough sound of Battletoads into one style is such a great feat. You can hear both styles in here and they mix together perfectly.

Underground (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eqd79ynlR-Y&feature=related)

What about Sunsoft's NES Games? I LOVE their epic 8-bit soundtracks!  :swoon:

Stuff like Blaster Master (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-Ebsa_Pc9U) and Journey to Silius (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBM-m82Za_0) for example?

How about (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wQChkiDNGA) Ufouria: The Saga (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMSRfRvB3a8)?

Maybe perhaps (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDqtkBRYK4I) Super Spy Hunter (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9N_qPA8wTO0)?

I'll guarantee (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PdW6a77kEk) you that (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OshyhWVquA0) Mr. Gimmick (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qgoGV1TB6k) has the (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWVkM9Ut1O8) most awesome (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URJ7pkk-sNo) 8-bit soundtrack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3xgKKo8TyU) you'll ever hear (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oR_CU_Ru9ZM) (or your patience back) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Knik6QqDJJ0)!  :sly:

I punched myself in the nuts for forgetting to list this track (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jefU3owEAgM) in any of my posts. Easily the best background song from Capcom vs SNK 2, and that game has a godly soundtrack. Plus, it reminds me of high school, back when my friends and i spent our lunch time playing fighting games in the digital media room. The instructor even let us use his projector for these brawls. Shit was awesome.

Fire Emblem usually has fitting BGM for everything, but this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLzQYabEUkc&feature=related) takes the cake. First time I heard it, I didn't want to proceed to the battle because I had doubts about what I was doing.

Replaying Sonic Adventure 2 has definitely made me appreciate the soundtrack a lot more. While I think it became too rock heavy starting with this game and most of the rock themes are the weakest ones here, and Jun Senoue's tracks aren't as strong as a whole over SA1, there are a few standouts.

For instance, while I find this level boring, its theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFTVuLKTnV8&feature=related) won't leave my head.

Thinking about, the best songs in the DKC series are Stickerbrush Symphony, Forest Interlude, Jib Jig, Aquatic Ambiance, and Fear Factory.

Also, I recently played DKC3 for the GBA. Someone here once stated that it's music is MUCH better then the SNES version's and I WHOLLY agree. I especially love Water World in it. It's actually on par with the original version from the first game.

The SNES version also has a good Water World, but not on the same level.

I can't help it. David Wise is one of my favorite VG composers.
Title: Re: Video Game Music
Post by: Spark Of Spirit on May 20, 2011, 05:28:29 PM
Moving off from that, I think I'd like to list and explain my choices for my top 5 VG composers:

David Wise

Wise's career went back to the early NES days where he specialized in taking the atmosphere of a level of a game and putting it to music, making you even more engrossed by what was happening. He was the perfect fit for a studio like Rare that had such a high importance on atmosphere. The man is criminally underused nowadays, and the fact that Nintendo did NOT hire him to do the DKCR music is probably the biggest fault with the game from an aesthetic POV. Listen to any of his tracks and you'll be whisked away to the world he envisioned with these pieces. Easily one of the best VG composers ever.

Highlights:

Hot Head Bop (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlFYSIyAGmA) (or any song from this game)
Stage 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1L41tJI6fq8&feature=related)
Pirate Lagoon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17Q9BJTxPlo&feature=related)

Yuzo Koshiro

I don't really know what to say about this guy except that he is a great songwriter. His main style seems to be taking the explosiveness of 80s pop music, and the seedier edge of 90s underground (sometimes even before the 90s!) and making anthems that will get you moving. Few artists are as natural sounding, yet have an unexpected touch to them like Koshiro's work does, and that's why he's so good. Another composer that is criminally underused these days, get this man behind the mixing boards and keep him there.

Highlights:

Go Straight (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVYx0OgWdbE) (You didn't see this one coming?)
First Step Towards War (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDm9LaJeN9w&feature=related)
Blue Blue Moon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BXMp19AaWc&feature=related)

Hideki Naganuma

Insanity. Naganuma is well knows for his "everything but the sink" style of songwriting which makes him very much a polarizing figure. I'll admit, sometimes his songs have a bit too much going on at once, but for those who can pay attention, your ears will thank you... before they orgasm into themselves. This is frequently dense music, but still manages to remain as simple as all great pop music in the end, every cacophonous noise plays a part in bringing the sound together. This music is best played over something that requires a lot of speed and style, so naturally he has composed for both Jet Set Radio and Sonic. He also does medleys, which is always awesome.

Highlights:

Ethno Circus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMMANIT5v-M&feature=related)
Funk To The Top (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYOsz7tjbsM&feature=related)
Rock It On (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFu7LFlaCCA&feature=related)

Yoko Shimomura

THE RPG composer as far as I'm concerned. While most RPG music bounces from symphonic generics or medieval ambiance, she is able to delve into any style and add emotional punch or uplifting feeling into it. Not confined because of her genre of choice (she has composed for Street Fighter II and Final Fight, by the way), more composers (especially modern composers and their boring movie score aping filth) could take lessons from her in how to truly craft a setting, emotion, and atmosphere. The Live A Live soundtrack alone is exceptional and not only spans many styles of music (it has western AND mecha anime themes!) but the quality remains high throughout. Now stretch this out over a career, and you have one of the best VG composers. Here are some examples of that:

Psycho Killing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqYmGHpTKp4&feature=related)
Urban Noise (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzRNZtj4lC8&feature=related)
Mario & Luigi 3 Battle Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrL96DpBxEc)

Koji Kondo

Nothing else to say.

What are some your favorites?

Couple of my favorites from DKC3:

Treetop Tumble (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjmUCbNk65o)
Water World (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2IXKsYHGJ0)

Eveline Fischer is no David Wise, but I disagree with the notion that the GBA port had "substantially" better music. In my personal opinion, I think she did a great job here. Even though they aren't from Wise (who's become synonymous with DKC), I still love the tracks in this one; they really fit the creepy, almost darker atmosphere that this game presents (in comparison to the previous DKC titles).

I've said it before, and I'll say it again; Treetop Tumble is one of my absolute favorite pieces of video game music ever. Dark, haunting, and totally befitting of the stages that you hear it in. Ripsaw Rage just wasn't the same in the GBA port; Wise's cheerful rendition is a good track on its own, but IMO, simply does not belong in a level of this ilk. The original track fits the dark ambiance perfectly.

Yoko Shinomura is definitely one of my favorite composers. Every game she does has an amazing soundtrack.

Anyway...

Forest Interlude (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IUXyzqrZsw&feature=related)
Welcome to Crocodile Isle/Map Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B65MmySauP8)

Hot Head Bop was already posted, so I'll forgo that, but yeah, it's another good one. Really, you could pick just about any track from this game to make a point. Even the best VGM soundtracks have a dud or two along the way, but not DKC2. IMO, the music in this game is quite simply perfect.

Treetop Tumble (8-bit: Donkey Kong Land 3 edition) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGbgSmsCiJQ)

After giving so much praise to one of my favorite VG tracks ever, I feel it wouldn't be right if I left out its 8-bit counterpart. Pretty cool, I must say; not quite as dark or haunting as the original, but in some contexts, does sound a bit more sinister.

Go ahead and add David Wise as a very close 2nd to Yuzo Koshiro on my list because just a few minutes ago I found out that he was responsible for this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xum1du8aeKc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xum1du8aeKc)

That's because David Wise is the man. He was wasted at Rare since the early 00s, and since games seem to only feature boring hard rock or orchestral soundtracks instead of videogame music, nobody seems to be asking for his services.

More 8-bit love. Couple of my favorites from Pokemon G/S/C. A few of these can be bit repetitive, all things considered, but they still get the job done. The 2nd Gen titles had some excellent cave themes, IMO.

Moonlit Grotto (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRRPvXjwyI0)

One of my favorite dungeon theme's from Oracle of Ages. Keep in mind, though; this is the same soundtrack that gave us that piece they used in the Crown Dungeon, so I guess anything looks good by comparison.  :sly:

Nah, but really... this has always been one of my favorite tracks from this game. Love it.

Was there ever a given reason why David Wise wasn't involved with Banjo-Kazooie? Probably not, I'd imagine. Well... nevertheless, Grant Kirkhope still did an admirable job on the music in his place. IMO, the soundtrack really suits the tone of this game to a tee.

He left Rare in the fall of 2010, and DKC Returns was released mid-November of that year. There was practically no time for him to come on-board and work on it, but hopefully he can get a chance if a sequel is greenlit. The only problem is getting a guy based in Liverpool to relocate to Texas to work alongside Retro Studios.

The music to Returns simply didn't compare in any way.

Hah! Yeah, I thought about that... but honestly, I had MJ's work on S3K pretty much pegged down to Carnival Night/Ice Cap/S3's original end credits. The one I posted doesn't really have his trademark sound bits in it like those other three.

...anyway, good choice on Balloon Park. I love all of the competition tracks myself, and Azure Lake (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHJz228QZ7k) might just be my favorite.

He might have had a hand in Launch Base, too. It sounds a lot like something he would do. As for S3&K as whole, I was always disappointed we never got an ending medley like we got for Sonic 1 and 2 for the entire game. That would have been nuts.

As for underrated Sonic tracks in general, well... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOEOg3Xmtdo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOEOg3Xmtdo)

Yeah, I gotta admit it had a good soundtrack, even though it wasn't on the level of the early main games. Still, I remember often times, as a kid, just turning on the game and going immediately to "Sound Test"... So that should say what I think about the main game. :P

The Alpha Renewal version. For some reason the American version is missing moves, and while the Japanese version is better, the Alpha version is just a bit more polished.

Irem only really made two beat em ups (3 if you count Kung Fu, which I wouldn't argue) but they are easily two of the best in the genre.

Playing the GBA Castlevania games has reminded me of how awesome the music in those games are.

From Circle of the Moon:

Requiem (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uzu5-fsDbuI&feature=watch_response_rev)
Sinking Old Sanctuary (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RaZtKUt4MA&feature=related)

And last but certainly not least, Awake (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPWuK0275Sc&feature=related)

While Aria of Sorrow doesn't seem to be as good as CotM's (from what I've played anyway) it still has some kickass tunes.

Castle Corridor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJAh5NCByWE&feature=related)
Chapel theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzcvtCCM2zU&feature=related)
Hammer's theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1t97c4uLww&feature=related). Why they didn't remake this for Dawn of Sorrow I'll never know.

Kirby Super Star had an amazing soundtrack. In fact, the Kirby series in general tends to have great music that doesn't get the respect it deserves.

A 16-bit remake of GG/MS Sonic 1's Labyrinth Zone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13QtraXaQX0&feature=related)

While not "official" video game music in a certain sense, I just had to share it here. This is absolutely beautiful. It could so seamlessly fit in an official Sonic title on the Genesis; almost makes you wonder why they didn't use something like that.

I've been listening to it for days. It's just great; whoever made this did one heck of a job.
The Master System version has a massively underrated soundtrack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYL_XCmn_78&feature=related)

Also, this is my fave remix of the Genesis version of Labyrinth Zone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvISkQzCLiQ)
Listening to it now and loving it.

Howzabout everyone lists their favorite soundtracks instead of just songs?

My top 5 (in no particular order):
God Hand
Mega Man X
MadWorld
Streets of Rage Remake (the remixes featured here are mind-blowingly awesome... if this is considered cheating, then Streets of Rage 2)
Tekken 3

Mega Man X
Zelda games (in general)
Halo games (in general)
DKC (SNES games)
NG games (in general)

And, uhhhh....Way too many other ones to name.

Yeah, picking favorite game soundtracks is personally just as hard as picking favorite individual video game music for me.

Well, that should be easy. But I'll have to count out the Smash bros series, because that would clutter everything up badly. But as for soundtracks filled with my favorite themes:

Sonic 3 & Knuckles (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wo_4R17gYSY) - My all time favorite platformer soundtrack. It has a wide scope of musical range and yet still manages to stay perfectly Sonic.
Double Dragon II (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnS0mCFebk0) - Every time I play this game, the soundtrack gets stuck in my brain as I cream thugs and hop chasms.
Mega Man X (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sayGb0MMS_k) - This is the perfect soundtrack for an action game. Seriously, use custom soundtracks while playing anything with action in it, guarantee this will sink up perfectly.
Rival Schools: United By Fate (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tmRjXml6fM&feature=related) - So good that Capcom apparently doesn't even own it somehow!
Donkey Kong Country 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_wTAw9L4Fo) - David Wise is the man. (This theme should be in Smash)
Kirby Superstar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVGoY-yixAs) - Pretty much EVERY great Kirby track is in here. (Also should be in Smash)
Jet Set Radio (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4bmLkpG-VM) - It'll blow your ass off.
Live A Live (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcSBYw_ycms) - For a SNES game, the sound scope is insane. Sci-Fi, fantasy, traditional Japanese, western, medieval, and 80s pop. By far the best RPG soundtrack on a whole, IMO.
Yoshi's Island (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6afS8Hwfx3g) - Of course.
Streets Of Rage (Anything not 3) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVYx0OgWdbE) - I can't pick one.
Super Mario Bros. 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jah7qo4riA) - Just listen to the video.

As a bonus, this is my all time favorite RPG theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELbULj1mENc&feature=related)... Easily the best I've ever heard.

Yeah, that's eleven, but I don't care. I still couldn't fit Mother 3, Sonic Colors, Godhand, or tons of others in despite all that. That's how awesome those are.

Soundtracks: (in no order)
Streets Of Rage
Sonic 2
Mega Man 2
Devil May Cry
Contra Hard Corps ()

And:
Einhander
Astro Boy Omega Factor
MGS4

Let's see if I can narrow this down:

Blazblue/Guilty Gear
Sonic The Hedgehog (series)
Bomberman 64: The Second Attack!
Megaman (entire franchise)
Mario (entire franchise)

Honorable mentions go to The Legend of Zelda, Chrono Trigger, Metroid, and Persona 4.

Obviously this is not counting games where I've heard the music, but haven't actually played the game.

New Super Mario Bros. DS -- Overworld (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GK41pLUuP0)

So I finally got around to adding the little Mario soundtrack CD (the one that came bundled with the 25th anniversary edition of All-Stars) to my mp3 player the other day, and I was surprised how great this sounds with headphones on. Makes me kinda appreciate what this game has to offer in terms of music. I've already declared my love for the kickass desert theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81QYlX-ml8Q) in the past, but there are some other pretty good tracks here as well (that I never quite gave the time of day to before).

Since I've been playing a lot of Hard Corps Uprising, I'd have to list Stage 4 - Capital Highway (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVxpC86zaMk&feature=related) as being my favorite non-remixed theme in the game. It nails everything right about Contra, the epic battles, the frantic pace, and it basically sounds like a chiptune played with "real" instruments like all great modern videogame music should.

Instead we're getting Dead Souls. The one Yakuza game I wanted nothing to do with. :p

On another note, I was playing the Game Boy version of Duck Tales (which is actually surprisingly good) and remembered that the soundtrack as a whole is pretty underrated next to the Moon theme.

We got some cool themes for the African Mines (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIeQBFgBQ1U), the Himalayas (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cT_Y3WzrqkQ&feature=related) and the Amazon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Zg1Wu1kOUA&feature=related) (which is probably a theme that could probably be in the show itself)... Just great stuff. The Game Boy's versions are a little rougher, but they're still ace tunes.

While Sonic Generations is full of remixes and classic tunes, I have to say my favorite by far was this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsCdyOtiTKo).

It makes me want Stardust Speedway to appear as DLC just so I can hear the music in a full on level instead of a boss. Oh yeah, and I love how the cutscene before the boss is timed so that the actual boss begins when the intro ends. Great stuff.

My top 5 video game songs of the year:

Sonic Generations - Stardust Speedway (JP) (Bad Future Remix) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzG6g11_Mzc)
Absolutely makes the boss fight it's used during. Great track.

Catherine - It's A Golden Show (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wL99WTvJ91Q)
Everything from 0:57 on is pure ear sex.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution - UNATCO Theme (DXHR Version) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCGBzrpxpsU)
The best song from the first game remade by the excellent composer of the third. Brilliant.

Yakuza 4 - Theme of Saigoh (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exr36NKOqDw)
Fucking badass.

Saints Row: The Third - Push Play (Sixx John) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OwHWqSrGjQ)
I count this because it was originally recorded for SRTT. Really chill and fun to listen to.

My list would be full of Sonic Generations tracks, but you did pick some really great ones. If rereleases count, then Sonic CD has TWO pretty cool soundtracks included so I'd have to pick my top 5 from that.

Palmtree Panic - Present (JP) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yitJY0Z9MLM)

Also in Generations, you gotta love this first level tune that explodes out of your speakers. While most debate over both soundtracks, there can't be anyone who dislikes this, right?

Wacky Workbench - Present (US) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVogmB2_Pws)

Blowing away the JP version, this funky tune makes a tedious level far more bearable. The fact that some people abhor this tune confuses me, this tune is pure Sonic to me.

Quartz Quadrant - Past (Both) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iuOaU9kWR8)

I believe Lord Dalek already brought this one up before, but I LOVE going to the past and staying there in QQ because this tune is so good. Like some crazy mix of Marble Zone, Starlight Zone, and Palmtree Panic, this tune is basically where tracks like Planet Wisp from Colors came from. Keep this style alive, Sega!

Tidal Tempest - Everything (Both) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yTp6Izalm8)

After Hydrocity, this is my favorite water level tune in the classic games. The JP version is more atmospheric, but the US version has more of a bouncy flair to it. The past is incredible, and the futures are also phenomenal. Easily the highlight of the game music-wise.

Metallic Madness - Good Future (JP) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkvBBMn8hZ4)

Almost like an ending theme, this is really the only track from this zone that I absolutely love and it's pretty close to perfection. Honestly, this should have been the credits tune.

I cannot be friends with anyone who dislikes this song.

Palmtree Panic is amazing. Perfect way to kick-start a video game.

Quartz Quadrant is awesome. Reminds me of SMT music.

Tidal Tempest is also good stuff. The US version reminds me of Mushroom Hill, kinda.

Here's some Mario Kart goodness. My top 5 Mario Kart tunes:

Mario Circuit (SNES) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlo_2NOPS7o)
Waluigi Pinball (DS) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7dHnWUVaFI)
Wario Colosseum (Gamecube) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_PbrkETbXE)
Coconut Mall (Wii) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOlV-LdvZxM)
Luigi Circuit (Gamecube) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aidl1ZrFwfQ)

Part of the reason I like to race on most of those courses is the awesome music that plays on them. And Waluigi Pinball is the best thing Waluigi related by far.

Check out the OST for Mutant Mudds (http://renegadekid.bandcamp.com/album/mutant-mudds-ost) for the 3DS e-shop (out tomorrow!), it's surprisingly awesome.

It sounds like a Game Boy soundtrack without trying to sound like a Game Boy game, if you know what I mean. That's a hard thing to accomplish. Check out the V-Land theme especially.

My favorite theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4QsMNo-bWc&feature=related) from the SNES Power Rangers Game.

I also have to give props to the Boss Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6-une2PLU4) for being all kinds of kick-ass.

Oh, and another theme that's really grown on me is the classic Sonic version of Crisis City (http://crisis%20city%20classic%20sonic%20theme) from Sonic Generations.

And speaking of Sonic music, I was just thinking about the theme for Flying Battery Zone in Sonic and Knuckles. Its a great theme, but it also stands out because it really has a very Mega Man-esque vibe to it. Am I the only who got that kind of feeling out of that stage's music? I just felt like bringing it up to see if anyone else thought the same about that.

This track from Muramasa frequently pops up in the game (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOag5g4y5sA&feature=related). Its a very ambient theme that really brings out the setting of the game. It's as breathtaking as the games visuals.
This one from MvC2 really captures the feel of the game (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmpr91beVkg). It's very funky and upbeat. That particular stage is also my favorite just for how flamboyant it is.
This one from Pikmin 2 gives me all kinds of feelings (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIQzfS1qmh4&feature=related). It feels mysterious, soothing and nostalgic at the same time. It also happened to be stuck to some of the hardest dungeons in the game.
This one from Corpse Party reminded me of a certain other horror series (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXB1uraZgXY&feature=related). The beginning did at least. No janitor with a wig and latex mask ever shows up though.
Finally, this one from the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers game is a great blend of the title theme with a video game soundfont (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6-une2PLU4). Reminds me of the Mega Man X soundtrack.

I'm in the mood to post my favorite Donkey Kong songs. Why? Cause that series has awesome music. Keep in mind that they're not in order though. All I know for sure is Stickerbrush Symphony is my overall favorite.

Stickerbrush Symphony (DKC2) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73n7HTcmb5g
Aquatic Ambiance (DKC) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDvKwSVuUGA
Water World (DKC3 GBA) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFDcu-hy4ak
Jib Jig (DKC2) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGHQ5iBJkzA
Forest Interlude (DKC2) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IUXyzqrZsw
Life in the Mines Returns (DKCR) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQMmMxr605o
Fear Factory (DKC) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNKsL_Gr1qY
Staff Role (DKC) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaCW3iaJG7U
Hot Head Hop (DKC2) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTEuL3jltQ0&feature=related
Stilt Village (DKC3 GBA) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cevlCkU8wJU

Life in the Mines is possibly the only song I like better in DKCR than in the original. Also, I might've been a little generous to Stilt Village, putting it on this list. It's awesome, but I might have been more concerned with giving DKC3 some credit.

There are some other songs I would've liked to have had, such as Gangplank Galleon. But their exclusion should serve as a testament to how awesome Donkey Kong's music is.

So if you have an iPod, iPhone, iWhatever product you might want to check out this app called SnesMusic. It's a free app that plays the actual music files from SNES games (NES, Game Boy, etc. support can be purchased for 99 cents each). It's a great way to have a bunch of classic game soundtracks and they hardly take up any space at all.

If there's a way to make the sound where Mario gets on Yoshi in Super Mario World my tone for receiving text messages, that'd be awesome.  I've wanted that to be my text tone for quite a while now.

edit: this is awesome, downloading a shit ton of SNES music now.

HAHAAAAAAAAA, figured out how to make the Yoshi Mount sound my text tone!  I also have the Pokemon Center healing sound from Red and Blue as a standby option.  And my ringtone is now the Underworld theme from Super Mario Bros, which even speeds up to the "hurry up you only have 99 seconds" after a certain amount of time.

I love being a nerd.

Yeah, I've been thinking about that. It is better the any of the original games. Almost would make it hard for me to go back to another of them (BK3 already ruined SOR3 for me) Now I just got to get the XBLA version of Streets Of Rage 2 so I can play online and my collection will be complete.

Great choices! I would personally put this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6gW975XDwA) as either the first or last track, but I just love that theme.

And this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0t_eshhdrQ&feature=related) is one of the reasons I prefer the SNES version of TiT to the arcade.

My top 10 NES game themes- one from each series:

Double Dragon II Final Boss (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1x1Ao6CxyA) - Epic and unstoppable
Contra - Jungle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UqXbEwqwF8) - The most iconic action game theme
Journey To Silius - "Space Colony Ruins" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjG2ZjPqzzE) - Game music at its peak
Ninja Gaiden - Act 4-2/"Ryu's Determination" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CN3JvaCLol0&feature=related) - THE NG theme, IMO
Duck Tales - Himalayas (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aP1hasWEG4&feature=related) - This track feels like the show to me
StarTropics - Cave (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5mK2SV7Dws) - Tropical Zelda, amazingly catchy
TMNT III - Scene 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUobNX53E5s) - This game is underrated in general
Batman - Streets Of Desolation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mmvYvsN32Q&feature=related) - I miss old Sunsoft
Mega Man 2 - Wily Castle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFKtYCcMWT4) - Probably the most obvious one for obvious reasons
Super Mario Bros. 2 - Overworld (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9Ee4TevHfA) - Yep, I like this more than the tracks from 1 and 3!

I might do one for other systems later, there's just so much goodness in game music.

Best DS music:

Hotel Dusk - Hangover Blues (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcXfPaz5t7w&feature=related) - I've always loved the noir-ish atmosphere this game pulled off. I wish we could have got the sequel here.
Contra 4 - Vile Red Falcon! [Stage 1] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIVbuA1oo8E) - GAMING IS BACK, LADIES
Henry Hatsworth & The Puzzling Adventure - Shammerdoodle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3QTsDrYnG4) - GET DOWN! Hugely underrated soundtrack
Sonic Rush - Ska Cha Cha (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fu00ahhmejY&feature=related) - Jet Set Radio + Sonic = What do you think?
Monster Tale - Scratch Pit (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNBqxQrlQFw&feature=related) - Feels very Wonderboy
Shantae: Risky's Revenge - Day Travel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozWulAEqh8k&feature=related) - Not much to say
Phoenix Wright - Cornered (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdIlP488n14) - Whenever this pops up, you just KNOW things are getting crazy
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story - Battle Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leCx-K8eLG0) - Think platformer meets RPG... Just like this series!
Mario Kart DS - Waluigi Pinball (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crc1Wn59nog) - Natch
Mega Man ZX - Green Grass Gradation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Srlhmt2JVT0) - Not my favorite game, but great music

Not really, most of the "themes" play during certain areas of stages whether they be swimming areas, mini-boss gauntlets, or set pieces. For instance there isn't really a "rainy" area, but it's called that to separate it from the other water themes. This game has a lot of good music.

That specific music usually plays during intense areas with lots of combat.

Hell yeah. Great music right there, too! I haven't played Warioland: Shake It. Is it worth picking up?

If I ever get a chance to design a video game, it'll be a combination 3D platformer and beat 'em up (or hack 'n slash) with a soundtrack composed entirely of funk, surf rock, and psychobilly. Someone needs to start asking me for ideas, already. :P
Title: Re: Video Game Music
Post by: Spark Of Spirit on March 18, 2012, 09:16:23 PM
The game's somewhat of an acquired taste. If you just run through the levels, it's quite an easy game. But if you find all the hidden treasures and complete all the missions and secret levels, then it's really hard. But the game is fun, and the bosses are amazing some of the best in a Nintendo game since Yoshi's Island, IMO. If you like platformers, you'll have a fun time.

And because it's the music thread, here's another track from the game (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fZ_hU0da0k&feature=related).

Well, since we were talking about a bit the other day, here are a couple of my favorite Kirby 64 tracks. In addition to the usual Kirby classics, this game has some great original music.

Boss (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5DOCc5-Qug) (slight remix of Dreamland 3's boss theme, but different for the most part)
Desert (Main Theme) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWKqIqFkBOI&feature=relmfu)
Factory (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_jkGeHgrF8&feature=relmfu)

Ruins (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ql9tqgq2YBM)
SUGAR RUSH (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26O9rY3pp1c&feature=related)
Underground Theme #2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-PPSw_cjWQ&feature=related)

...and last but not least, something so un-Kirby like, you can't help but love it. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enejjKpMtgU)

A lot of Nintendo games have this odd thing where the rest of the game will have standard music ranging from fantastic to meh, but the final battle music is all kinds of awesome while sounding like it's from a completely different series. Like Zero-Two.  ;D The Mario & Luigi games come to mind also.

You know what this thread needs? More Pokemon.

Let's start at the beginning. Some of my favorite Red/Blue/Yellow tracks:

Cinnabar Island (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBby1E3tWwo&feature=relmfu)
Final Battle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5I3Cm9necF0&feature=related)
Gym (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biLeC5D4S48)
Route 4/Main Overworld Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLcJois9yTs&feature=related)
S.S. Anne (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGJglX2t5YM&feature=related)
Unused Track (Yellow) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbQUwiLJZ5o)

In particular, the unused track from Yellow is pretty cool. You can't help but wonder why this one didn't make the cut; such a shame they just let it go to waste.

Pokemon Tower (Red/Blue/Yellow) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEgk3luItjY) (still creepy as ever)
Lavender Town (Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_411G29lfy4) (even creepier)
Normal Duel (Pokemon The Trading Card Game) (http://youtu.be/zfDxSEc5mDw) (I won't lie, I want this in a Smash Bros.)

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games have a surprisingly fantastic set of soundtracks.

I also quite enjoy the Abandoned Ship music from R/S/E, and Route 113. Also, the Desert Palace music from Black/White.

So, I only JUST realized that the main theme in Skyward Sword is actually just the theme for Zelda's Lullaby in reverse.

Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fN1vFESbfZk&feature=related) is the main theme, and here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDDAXsgoc5s) is the theme played backwards, and just for comparison here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qPtuOfQbyI) is the OoT version of Zelda's Lullaby.

That kind of just blew my mind when I first realized it. Anyways, I just thought I'd bring that up, but I'm pretty sure that most people already noticed this before I found out.

I always hear people talking smack about this soundtrack. I just don't get it. It might not be the all-time best soundtrack, but it's IS really good.

Japonesque (Stage 1-1 and 5-1) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hf2eEjdDNNU&feature=related) - THE ninja theme to me.
Idaten (Stage 2-1) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADC0G_7CsYw&feature=related)
Whirlwind (Stage 4-1) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjaW4ZYzVHI)

In keeping up with my previous trend of Pokemon tracks, here are some of my favorites from Gold/Silver/Crystal:

Bicycle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fPuyF7QhgU&feature=relmfu) (my FAVORITE bike theme from Pokemon; yes, I like this even more than the RBY version)
Dance Theater (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzy3XxgtjXU&feature=relmfu)
Dragon's Den (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hoyb0tI5NrQ&feature=relmfu)

Gym (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFnJ-UN48vU&feature=relmfu)
Kanto Gym Battle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xf6mv7BWWME&feature=relmfu)
National Park (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymP7ZryS3bg&feature=relmfu)

Route 38/39 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMZ_8tL9TxM&feature=relmfu)
Sprout Tower (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mu7jJYESDok&feature=relmfu)
Title Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7t_EYg4VIgY&feature=relmfu)
Trainer Battle (Kanto) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxnLebaVh-0&feature=relmfu) (quirky remix, but I like it)
Union Cave (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdmcXhXUJjs)
Vermillion City (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQ0HXv7NqHY&feature=relmfu) (a lot of people don't seem to like this version, and I don't get why; I think it sounds great)
Victory Road (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQOVRQQGA0U&feature=relmfu) (another fine remix)
Wild Pokemon Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQLd39r12Bk&feature=relmfu)

Man, I absolutely love the soundtrack to these games. I could probably post every song here if I really wanted to; not a weak track to be found.

...and just for the heck of it, here's an updated version that was made for Ruby and Sapphire, but never used (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxDQmBZQ-ak&feature=related). Kind of a shame they didn't use this in FR/LG when you encounter the Legendary Dogs there, but whatever.

I may not like the direction the series has taken story-wise, but the series' soundtracks have always been beautiful to me. One of the few that I actually by physical copies of.

The entiere N64 trilogy is underrated (though, at least Bomberman 64 is acknowledged on occasion) sadly. And out of all 3 of them, Hero seems to get the least attention, either due to the gameplay change/lack of multiplayer, or the fact that it has little to do with the other 2 games.
Title: Re: Video Game Music

I always refer to Bomberman Hero's bgm as the most awesome elevator music ever. That the thing that comes to mind. But it really is great. Also always loved the music that played when you fought Artemis, Regulus and Orion in 64. Spent years trying to find that track afterward.

Bomberman Hero is great. Some sites (like Nintendolife) looked down on its VC re-release, but it's actually quite the cool little game. The only thing it needed was some classic Bomberman multiplayer.

I still think its single player is the best in the series, though.

Love that track. The Second Attack version  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6cGv2pngOo) isn't quite as good, but its still an awesome track.

Of course, being composed by Yasunori Mitsuda, it's only natural that TSA! has (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOvzz9aKD9g) an awesome (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTcTUYYdrHA&feature=BFa&list=PL5CB2ECE673024266) soundtrack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwcfpAT448w&feature=channel&list=UL).

That's always my go-to track in Hero as well. I agree that as far as single player goes Hero was the best.

I actually never played The Second Attack but I also don't even remember really knowing it existed. I had never seen it in the store. Was it a limited release or something? I want to say that as far as N64 games go The Second Attack is fairly rare.

It really is actually (Tips & Tricks put it in their "Top 10 rarest N64 games" list). Not sure if it was really a limited release. I had the chance to get it, but passed it up for no reason because I was a stupid, dumbass kid. Me and my cousing did rent it a lot a Blockbuster though.

IIRC, I've never seen it at any of the retro stores here either, so it must be pretty rare.

There's no excuse for the VC not having Yoshi's Island yet. People can speculate it's because of the FX Chip if they want but the fact is Homebrew can run the game without any issues.

Yeah, I didn't even know The Second Attack even existed until years after it came out. Never saw advertising for it, never saw it in stores. I do have the old issue of Nintendo Power that focused on it, so apparently I completely missed that. Always did love Hero's gameplay the most, but my favorite character designs were from 64 with the whole sleek, miniature robot look all the bad guys had. Wish they had kept making characters similar to those. I think the closest we ever got was Max? Once Bomberman started getting that anime look in the Gamecube era, I stopped paying attention entirely.

And then I remembered this was a music topic. Sorry.

I didn't even know about Hero until whatshisname said something.

I barely played any of 64. I played a small bit of the single player on a rom and maybe a small bit back on my old friend's 64 when I was a kid. I do remember somewhat remember how greatly designed the multiplayer stages were. I've played a PS1 Bomberman I had and loved to death and my oldest little brother gave me a controller with a arcade pack disk with Bomberman Live and I played the demo to its sequel and they all feel so uninspired compared to 64's multiplayer. I still love the two BM games I owned and it's Bomberman so it would be just as playable on a Gameboy but I wish they would make the multiplayer that good again.

I also picked up a copy of the Max Anarchy OST with the game. The packaging is really nice! It's all in English, and has two high-quality lyrics books (one with pictures in English, and a plain one with Japanese translations). As expected, the music is fantastic. My ten favorite songs (in no particular order) are:

Sick YG - Soon Enough
Skitz The Samurida - My Town, My City
Doujah Raze - Gotta Get The Cash
muzeONE - Jaw
Theory Hazit - Here We Go
Vstylez - Days Of Old
Wonder Brown - Mortified
Tre-Dot - Rock On
Doujah Raze - Find You
Ox - Kill Em All

Every track is great, though; I love the whole thing (which is fairly surprising for a 32 track release). While I could do without the way Bandy Leggz obnoxiously changes her voice on I Know U Want Me, it's still a fun song, and doesn't annoy me nearly as much as Death & Honour from MadWorld did. Sensational soundtrack.

The Stream of Time from Tales of Phantasia. It plays at the beginning, yet sounds so... final. Sad, somber "end of the world" music in my ears.

Richard Jacques + Shinobi III = excellent (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_f8wfbJ5SY&feature=relmfu)

Mixing in Idaten and Japonesque (the two best Shinobi 3 themes) was a genius move. If only he added Whirlwind to the boating segments it would have been perfect.

So, I found out that the Saturn version of Castlevania: SOTN featured Maria as an exclusive playable character. Since I don't have access to her in the version of the game that I own (which is basically just a direct port of the PS1 version of the game), I decided to check out some footage of her general gameplay on Youtube. I then came to the realization that she has her own version of the "Dracula's Castle" theme from the beginning of the game, which is a really fucking bad-ass remix of the tune that utterly trumps any other track from the game, even the Clock Tower theme which was my favorite tune from the game up until this point. The problem is that I've literally spent the last hour of my time just trying to find a recorded version of that theme on Youtube but to no avail, which is driving me insane. I don't know what it is, but something about that piece of music has me determined to track it down in some isolated form....

I was feeling a little bit nostalgic for some Myst recently. Whether or not you think the games are overrated, the music is still unbelievable--I think it was a real game changer (dur hur, puns) for the way you listen to a game's soundtrack.

I just learned of a YouTube user named Shady Paradox, (http://www.youtube.com/shadyparadox) who recreated the soundtrack for Myst III. Not remixed, recreated. He actually snagged the game's audio files and reproduced them to sound like the original for the highest-quality audio.

Here's the full playlist. (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLC330A61B980F6C92) Here's a few of the tracks I enjoyed:

The Forest and the Swamp (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pd_zyedMiVk)
The Airship Chasm (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThvtzeOn8T0)
Energy Island (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWkOxBBz2u0)
Amateria (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_ZCSrZE2SM)
The Spider Spinner (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8AOpR7IXAk)

Also, be sure to read the descriptions; he goes into great detail on how he made these.

Hmm (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6miaTf1gF4g).

Anyhow, I never really got into video game music, at least not until MGS2. I was always busy trying not to mess up or die whether than pay attention to music. But now that I've gotten into the video game music I will say that there aren't many that stick out. The ones that do stick out sticks out big. MGS, Halo, Assassin's Creed, Final Fantasy, Darksiders 2, and God of war. I can't remember the names of the people that did these soundtracks, but they sound really good to me.

Also, I can't leave out Ryu's theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jrcUSiTj7JY) and Guile's theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLJLyneZGKc). Those 2 theme's really gets me pumped when playing Street Fighter, and they get me even more pumped when playing Street Fighter 4. I think I'm of the few that actually like SF4 theme's more than the originals, but "shrugs".

Mega Man 9 has the best music of the past generation. Let me share my top 8 tunes from it:

Tornado Man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTvjc12new0) (The reveal trailer featured this for a reason)
Hornet Man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7OMF8Yknu3w) (My personal favorite Mega Man track of all time)
Wily Stage 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_UPDQYsGGQ) (Storm that fortress!)
Concrete Man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwQ9iCqtpUk) (Pure Mega Man 2)
Wily Stage 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtEci6KLVt0) (Reminds me of Mega Man 3)
Jewel Man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdLQzZwqVqA) (Like a Mega Man 4 theme if they were good)
Splash Woman (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7qcJwJfyyk) (Almost western-tinged)
Wily Stage 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_K9-SwNBMSY) (How did they make so many good castle themes?)

Yes, I've been on a bit of a classic Mega Man kick recently.

Heh, That brings back memories. We never finished it because I was so busy and kept procrastinating on tallying up the results. I'd be up for doing it again, but it'd probably work better if someone else took responsibility for opening and closing each round, otherwise some rounds would take forever to be completed (mostly because I'd probably completely forget about them  ).

As for GMOW, I also like Kim Jae-Hoon's theme quite a bit, but Rock Howard probably has my favorite fighting game character theme ever. As for the game itself, I still effectively suck at it, though now I can put together some pretty cool combos with Gato, which is the character that I'm best with in that game,  right now.

And this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9THf5QlXuyo) is still one of the best end boss battle themes of all time!

I think I may have even posted this before myself, but yes, I agree with you 1,000% about this. The theme is just so intense and the boss battle itself is easily the most epic boss fight that I have played in any game in the Mario franchise. And, of course, anyone who knows me knows that Yoshi's Island is one of my favorite games of all time in general. The game does recycle a lot of themes, but it helps that virtually all of its music is great and memorable. Its easily one of my favorite Mario game soundtracks.

One reason (one of several, actually) why I'm sorry that there was never a revival of Konami's SunsetRiders is that we've never had a remix of this gem (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3md8rJBDUkk).

Actually, there are so many good tunes in SunsetRiders that it's difficult to choose. Here are some more of my favorites:

Stage 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLOPRdxgqAI)
Stage 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raklDJ28OCE)
Stage 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RB232rlrt2g)
Bonus Stage (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhb2Ev39Xhk)
Chief Scalpem (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJwTcoVzJKg)
One of Konami's best games fullstop. It's their best arcade game, for sure. The SNES music was pretty close to the arcade (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmM6Mew_48Y)

I would totally love a sequel or a re-release of it.

Let's force...erm ask Spark to open and close the rounds.

Speaking of Metal Gear music in general, I do think it's a real shame that we will no longer hear the main theme in any future games. I can't blame them, though. It does sound like the main theme was very much based off of that Russian classical piece.

But still, an orchestrated updated is just what that song needed to be perfect.

Let me set the stage. The game is Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millenium Girl. Though a remake of the first game in the series, this particular section is only in the new story mode. In one of the final areas of the game, a doomsday machine is ready to go off, and you have fifty "turns" to get across the dungeon map to the control panel. Every move over one space of the map counts as a turn. Every round in a random battle counts as a turn. So you can choose which way you go around the map, looking for the fastest route. And then you reach the control panel, and the computer's A.I. (who was an ally for most of the game) uploads itself into a machine as a final defense against you. The boss battle starts, and so does this track, as you realize "Oh crap, this is a major boss battle, and the timer is still counting down." How you did getting there determines how many moves you get to kill the machine, and it's intense. Loved this section. The track fits the situation perfectly.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RS6FPBwR58Q

Oh, and for good measure, here's the best battle theme in the series, courtesy of Etrian Odyssey IV.

It doesn't play enough; IIRC you only hear that at the end of the 2-player stages.

But yeah, it's definitely a good track. I think in the beta version that IS the original menu music but idk it's been a while since I've toyed with that.

I must be one of the only people on the entire planet who not only thinks Resident Evil (Dual Shock Edition)'s soundtrack is something other than terrible, but that it's even better than the original, non-Dual Shock Resident Evil's soundtrack.

Here's some of the songs I like more in the Dual Shock version, alongside the original songs for direct comparison.

Original Mansion Theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BAN7a8VvWY
Dual Shock Mansion Theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wft07hr6D2c

Original Forest's Dead Theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jrAFcwH_rfg
Dual Shock Forest's Dead Theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AS3jsWW2o_A

That Forest theme is a bit of a close call, but I really like the Dual Shock version, particularly when heard in-game on the balcony along with the sound of the wind.)

Original Save Room Theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vb_Bb8JA2pg
Dual Shock Save Room Theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jiKienmRiQ

Original Rebecca's Theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIjMpvve6ms
Dual Shock Rebecca's Theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRdNJ3k0L14

Original Where's Wesker Theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhq5iKRZG-U
Dual Shock Where's Wesker Theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmkA8icRS78&list=PL97D643FDC344E67D

Original Completed Picture Puzzle Theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDhJenh7Bzg
Dual Shock Completed Picture Puzzle Theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vw_yl7oVyA

The Picture Puzzle theme is nearly a tie. The original version is so spooky. But there's a strangeness about the Dual Shock version makes me slightly prefer it.

Original Guardhouse Theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6A5shcu7Vg
Dual Shock Guardhouse Theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ror3YUrQw90

Original More Rooms Theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kl2PEcXllxY
Dual Shock More Rooms Theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZ3ambGpUa4

That "More Rooms" comparison in particular is no contest. Dual Shock's atmospheric, almost depressing theme over the original's standard, repetitive "eerie" music. In fact, this YT comment, surprisingly, captures the feeling of the Dual Shock's version:

QuoteThis theme represents feelings of loneliness and hopelessness. You are trapped inside a giant mansion. You are surrounded by Zombies, Zombie Dogs, Hunters, Giant Snakes, Giant Spiders, and other horrors in the mansion and the howling Zombie Dogs that fill the night air outside in the woods. And your S.T.A.R.S. teammates are getting killed. And it feels like this nightmare will never come to an end.

Original Guardhouse Basement Theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGMWITl9_KQ
Dual Shock Basement Theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyUUeUgCsSs

Original (Second Visit) Mansion First Floor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nesv2emCoyM
Dual Shock (Second Visit) Mansion Second Floor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFO0XeQUiTI

Original (Second Visit) Mansion Second Floor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttsZ7UfLqcw
Dual Shock (Second Visit) Mansion Second Floor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4g8tnVtzyRY

Original Laboratory Theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xz_pG8R8E5c
Dual Shock Laboratory Theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyjxJRwigas

Original Tyrant 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MyX9XEuqbQI
Dual Shock Tyrant 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kzj1pBsBjyI

Love how all the Tyrant music in the Dual Shock version sounds like superhero movie.

Original Ending Theme (Still Dawn): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PZeBN1wLxM
Dual Shock Ending Theme (Tempest): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpRbAEbm3Bo

I actually hated Tempest as a child and always skipped the credits. But it's really so much better than Still Dawn. Classical orchestrated piece versus the massive cheese ball that sounds like it came straight from an old sitcom opening or a Sonic Adventure game.

Would I like the Dual Shock soundtrack more if it wasn't the one I grew up with more (I didn't hear the original soundtrack until I re-purchased the game a few years after its release)? I don't know. Maybe not. It does have some pretty weak songs. But I think it's more atmospheric and effective. THe original's soundtrack is good but a bit more stereotypical in my opinion, plus it has some awkward rock-style music thrown in there.

Both soundtracks are still better than the GameCube remake's soundtrack. That soundtrack seemed to be trying to sacrifice sound quality for atmosphere but ended up being too quiet and ultimately just weaker versions of most of the original RE's music. The remake does have the best credits theme, out of the three.

The DKC series has some great music, but what about Donkey Kong Land? Some fantastic renderings here that deserve a mention:

Boss Bossanova (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWxWDZPT7cA)
Cascade Capers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2l2oFfqUz1Q)
Gangplank Galleon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Bdd4RDtVlY)
Island Swing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCmw1Lc06a4)
Lockjaw's Saga (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-28E9uTmW0)
Rocket Run (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Ac8Ru3u91w)
Treetop Tumble (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhIdNGqdW3M)
Welcome to Crocodile Isle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmA60F8bPkY)

A lot of these really turned out great on chiptune, and some of them (like Gangplank Galleon) I honestly like more than the original. I was surprised to see that two of these (Boss Bossanova and Rocket Run) also ended up going unused in the final game; that's a shame too, they both turned out pretty good.

Why do a lot of people dislike Double Dash and call it the worst Kart game?
The most common complaints are:

-The game is slow.
I don't see it, the game is about as fast as any MK game to me. It might be the heavier weight of the karts that throw people off, but that makes sense to me. The game should feel heavier because you're carrying more weight AND more ammo.

-The tracks are boring.
Again, I don't see it. They're not as gimmicky as a lot of the Wii tracks, but they are far better designed than most of the MK64 tracks and are all very different in design from each other. I mean, no MK game has tracks as diverse as Luigi Circuit, Baby Park, DK Mountain, and Wario Colosseum in the same game outside of retro tracks.

-The controls are bad.
Common generic complaint for a game. I had no problem with the controls at all, it controls like most every other MK game.

-The two man kart gimmick is dumb.
Fair enough, but it's really the only gimmick until the gravity one to seriously impact the game and make Mario Kart really different from all the other kart clones out there. Plus, it adds much strategy to the game and even adds two player to one kart mode which is one of my favorite co-op experiences.

-It's not as "magical" as Mario Kart 64.
I see this complaint with every post-MK64 game in the series and I don't get it. MK64 was not that good. It was slow (unlike DD, it has framerate issues), the tracks were fairly unimaginative, and it wasn't even the best kart game of its generation. I think people just wanted Mario Kart 64 with new tracks and hated that Double Dash was entirely new.

Years later and it's still my favorite Mario Kart game to this day. I will never get the hate. I still hope for a sequel.

Actually, I wouldn't mind a HD re-release like they did with Wind Waker that adds new characters and 16 retro tracks to the game. That would be more than enough for me.

Very nice. It's much better than the Rainbow Road theme from Mario Kart Wii, which was apparently somewhat inspired by Galaxy but ended up being kind of average, not to mention it didn't utilize the classic Rainbow Road melody.

The slowest is Mario Kart 64 because of how needlessly long and wide those courses are.

I don't think they are necessarily as good as, say, Super Mario Kart's tracks, but they are still fine for the most part. I love Double Dash's Rainbow Road.

That's similar to how I felt with Mario Kart 64. I had already loved Super Mario Kart at the time, but when I played 64 it just never fully clicked for me. And when I was young, I didn't really know why, but now I do.

Honestly, Super Mario Kart is still arguably the best in the series.

I remember Mario Kart 64's tracks boring me. I ended up going like, "Is that it?". I had all the chances in the world to really like it since we used to play it a lot but it never really got beyond just being a time passer for me. I have always preferred Crash Team Racing. Doctor N. Gin's stage is still my favorite kart or racing level period. Hell, CTR is still my favorite kart game and only 2nd to Burnout Revenge when it comes to racing games.

Revisiting Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando, and this game has a much better soundtrack than I've given it credit for. It's not as fun as the first game's, but it still has some really memorable tunes. I like how a lot of them are based around the commando/spy motif. This is how you do themed music for a game!

Chainblade & B2 Brawler Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PZbQDo3vfg)
Chemical Factory (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nd7yig9spfw)
Crystal Desert (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MT0rmOwDFek)
Megacorp Armory (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1DG9M-V_JY)
Warehouse (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nhlfz0O3arc)

Truth told, all the R&C games have pretty great music, but outside of the groovitron I can really only remember any of the songs from the original trilogy.

1. Super Mario Galaxy
2. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
3. Chrono Trigger
4. Super Mario Galaxy 2
5. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Interestingly, those are all Nintendo. Guess the guys behind those soundtracks are just that good. I could have put the more recent Fallout games on this list for their radio tunes. But those songs are real, so I can't count them.

But here are some non-Nintendo honorable mentions.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Castlevania: Rondo of Blood
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles
Resident Evil: Director's Cut - Dual Shock Ver.
The Curse of Monkey Island

Many RE fans would kill me for listing the Dual Shock soundtrack, as 99.9% of them say it's garbage. Maybe it's because I heard the Dual Shock soundtrack first, but I think it's scarier and more atmospheric, lacking that awkward rock vibe in the original version's soundtrack.

Also, I would mention Silent Hill 1, but decided not to count it as its completely different, more about atmosphere than being a song that's good to listen to.

5. Super Mario Galaxy 2
6. Yoshi's Island
7. Super Mario Bros. 3
8. Jet Grind Radio
9. Double Dragon Advance
10. Deadly Premonition

That was really hard.

Besides the ones already mentioned:

Ninja Gaiden I and II (NES)
Halo (Bungie's Series Run)
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
Shinobi (PS2)
Asura's Wrath
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Kirby Superstar
Sonic Adventure
Garou: Mark of the Wolves
Super Castlevania IV

I wanted to include DOOM and DOOM II, but am a bit weary to do so considering that more than half of its themes are directly ripped off from classic albums. It's very much a case like DB Kai, where I love the soundtrack, but feel awkward about praising it since it is still plagiarized.

That one's bad. The Dual Shock soundtrack certainly has more duds in its soundtrack. But on the other hand...

I think it's highs are higher, and it generally has more highs than the original. I also think the original has its share of weak links.

There's another song from the original that I think is kind of weak, but can't find it and don't know its name. It plays when the cerberus'  break through the windows in the hallway on the east side of the mansion.

There are people who unironically post that are their argument for the Dual Shock soundtrack being bad, while never having heard any other of its songs. :srs:

My favorite after Dual Shock soundtrack is either the original RE1 soundtrack (I do still love that one) or RE2's. I'm also a big fan of 0's, and 3 and CV's are fine too. REmake's is solid, too, but I think it's not quite as good as the soundtrack its based on. Its songs almost seem really... quiet.

RE4's is more like Silent Hill. Great, but it's more about atmosphere than memorable music.

The NES was stretched really hard when it comes to the soundchip. Check out games like Gimmick! to see something you would hear on the SNES.

I was in our local video game shop last year when they sold a Little Samson cart for $550.  Was amazing, but I settled for paying $80 for a Demon's Crest cart.

Just found this; someone on Youtube uploaded a version of Cascade Capers without the wind noise, and it's even more haunting than the original (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SG-Rue593rM).

DKC3 has such an underrated score.

A lot of "faux retro" music completely misses the mark.

8-bit music was attempting to recreate pop songs from the 80s in order to hook people in. Most modern "retro" music just uses synth for bland compositions that are quite soon forgotten.

If you're composing music for a "retro" game, then it has to sound like this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecAg_34Rtws) in at least some part. Wouldn't sound that out of place in a Sonic game, huh? Well that's the point.

Honestly, besides the whole faux sprites that don't look anything like video games before the Neo Geo, it's the lousy music I really find disappointing with a lot of indie games. Stop using the 8-bit and 16-bit eras as a crutch. They deserve better.
