I remember Treme being all right, much more happy than Simon's other shows but not by much. I think the show doesn't get anywhere near as much love is because it's harder to sell audiences, even The Wire audiences, on a show about the history of New Orleans music. While The Wire's a relatively easier pitch since cop dramas are a very popular genre.

Yeah, somebody's been showing me tweets, giving me context, and shit looks bleak.

In hindsight, surprised it took Twitter 15 years. MySpace didn't last that long. Even before Elon, I just remember the site becoming a little shitty and thinking "Why are people I'm following retweeting all these obnoxious assholes?"

No one's really cracking jokes. The userbase is mostly miserable, while the right keeps going increasingly mask off.

It's funny, right before The Deuce started, a friend of mine was telling me about how they'd like to see a series about the porn boom in the 70s, kind of like a more fleshed-out Boogie Nights, and we got more or less that. It's a good show, not as essential as The Wire but captivating for its entire run.

And I really should get to Treme at some point.

I'm finally catching up to Penguin and I am enjoying it, as well. This isn't really the character I'm used to, but his intellect is still there. The main appeal for me, however, is probably Cristin Milioti, who keeps proving her range. Glad to see she survived cancer and Ted Mosby.

Quote from: Mustang on November 06, 2024, 03:41:15 PMGreed Island, I don't know how I feel about this one. I don't think it was weak, but I felt like some things were just off here, especially the villain. He reminds me of a filler villain before that transition to the next baddie. I loved the training. I always love the training portions in this series. Yeah, something about that villain just throws me off lol.

The problem I have with Greed Island is that it feels generic. Hunter x Hunter is known for subverting shonen tropes, yet Greed Island has a straight-forward story with basically zero twists. Gon collects all the cards, fights the bad guy, and wins with a super-charged ki blast. :??: Eh...

I guess with the recent news, Twitter's gonna become a whole lot worse in terms of unfunny memes and assholes who think they're funnier than they actually are. The kind of guys where you're thinking "None of your shitposts or stupid retweets are ever funny. It's all just stupid edgelord shit a 16-year-old would say even though you're over twice that age. I mostly just mute them because I know you're just gonna have a tantrum if I tell you to lay off. You used to be cool to hang out with, and that's why I still follow you. But these days, even hearing you talk is a fucking chore."

How many years has Elon run that stupid "Let that sink in" joke into the ground? Just a whole website of wannabe comedians who have the comedic timing of a corpse.

They'll wind up doing it at least a few times. Trey couldn't help himself and did a Garrison/Trump joke even when Biden was president a season ago.

I listened to a podcast with them and a former Comedy Central president a while back, and Matt mentioned that the 2016 results just threw him into depression for days and how Trey managed to finish the episode that aired that week on time was a miracle.

And I think the issue is that despite what it seems, Trey and Matt said in interviews that they don't actually like doing political satire episodes and would rather do dumb shit with the kids like fans want, but the way South Park's produced means that coming up with entire episodes in a week for 6 to 10 straight weeks is fucking hard, to a point where I remember they said one of the reasons they haven't done another theatrical movie is because the show ends up gobbling up any idea they're brainstorming, so they resort to having to pull a Law & Order and ripping shit from the headlines for material. Because that's easier than thinking "Okay, how can Cartman ruin Butters this time in a way we haven't already done?" And you can tell, since while they've done some great political satire, they've had some glaring blind spots that you wouldn't see in Thick of It, Yes Minister, or even Veep.

Oh yeah, EK mentioning the Whites reminded me that the namesake of their kid did an interview about South Park, and working with Trey and Matt back in college. He hasn't actually worked with them in a long time, and was surprised to find out his character died. He also mentioned that he wished Trey was more like Kevin Smith and did endless sequels to Cannibal the Musical and Orgazmo with the rest of their college friends. And I can't agree on a creative level, but I get why he'd say it.

I mean, they did mostly ignore Biden during his term and the fact that they decided to skip the Election this year, so maybe they don't have to talk about politics if they don't want to. They could always lampoon something else.

They've made it abundantly clear that they hated writing it just as much as fans did watching it after the joke ran it's course only a few episodes in.

While I'm bracing myself for a return to that, I wouldn't be entirely shocked if they find a way to ignore it. I guess we'll see.
