I wish there was a way for me to watch the 1999 version. I remember liking the animation a lot more than Madhouse's animation. Anyway,

Having finally caught up with where the anime I supposedly ended at and re-watched it up to where the king was born, I will say this is a favorite, but at the same time this could be a honeymoon phase, so I'll give it another week to before I fully commit. Where do I even begin with this? Overall show is goated, and it might be better for me to do another watch and give my thoughts on each arc since I'm going off memory at the moment.

I see where Psyren came from. I remember when I first got into Psyren and was trying to make a comparison of what it was like, all that needed to be said was a cross between HxH and Persona. Anyway, I think all the characters are good, but there's not one in particular that really stands out as a clear cut favorite to me. Characterization on the other hand is top notch. I think the only character I had a problem with is Kurapika and that's only because certain moments during the Yorknew (?) arc he came off as a spoiled brat, almost like Edward Elric, but they are kids so, lol.

As far as the arcs, hmmm, I think Yorknew might be the one I enjoyed the most. Greed Island, I don't know how I feel about this one. I don't think it was weak, but I felt like some things were just off here, especially the villain. He reminds me of a filler villain before that transition to the next baddie. I loved the training. I always love the training portions in this series. Yeah, something about that villain just throws me off lol. Chimera Ant is peak characterization. The election stuff and seeing Ging, meh, but Killua going to get Alluka (sp?) was tugging on the heart strings a bit. I don't know what to make of that arc either to be honest lol. Obviously it's not done, but still.

Jumping around a bit and not saying much lol, seeing and hearing about Nen is probably my favorite thing throughout the entire series. A counter for a counter for that counter is fascinating to me and reminds me of rock x paper x scissors (no pun) aspect in fighting games. The characters abilities are one thing, but the mechanics of Nen and seeing how characters use it in general carries hard.

Like I said, honeymoon phase and we'll see where I'm at next week-ish and closer to the end of the year. Right now, Jujutsu Kaisen > all at the moment. Jokes aside, I do prefer JJK at the moment though.

This time, I hope they actually have the balls to have Trump appear or go the generic president route. Please Trey and Matt, do not rob us of Mr. Garrison by making him the Trump stand-in like he was years ago. That really had to hurt your writing.

Well, looks like we're going to lose Mr. Garrison again for a few years unless SP just decides to ignore the election entirely (possible, I guess).

On the bright side, at least we'll probably get a lot more comedic scenes with The Whites finding new things to bitch about.

Yu-Gi-Oh Master Duel
Still watching a few people for the most part, but I am playing a little bit more. I do believe a reset is needed, but probably on the forbidden list itself moreso than where the game is at. Originally, I thought because the game is so fast with the special summons that it needs to be toned down when most people like those decks. They also like the interaction with the hand traps and board breakers. The one thing most people hate are the floodgates (Skill Drain), and then there's Max C. From my understanding, Max C is the counter for all the heavy special summons (along with Nibiru), but at the same time, it might depend on what format you're playing. If you're playing casuals, YES, BAN THIS MOTHERFUCKER, but if you're playing tournaments/rank/meta, I think Max C is needed. That being said, I think my biggest issue are the boss monsters some of these decks are playing into. Like, you have a trap heavy deck with a board that ends with the boss monsters as a combo deck and that just don't make sense to me. These generic boss monsters like Accesscode Talker, Borreload Savage Dragon, Chaos Angel, Barron de Fleure need to be theme specific. I hate seeing Accesscode Talker in a deck like Yubel or Dragon link just because its so easy to summon it with it's busted effects. With cards like this roaming rampant, you can afford to reset the banlist altogether. And that's just me observing. Playing casually has been "meh". Trying to get cards without spending money is very bothersome.

Street Fighter 6
Easing my way back into it. The noise around fighting games in general is still whatever, but it's getting closed to that time where my friends and family have our little gauntlet.

I just noticed that the actress who played Oz's mom in the flashback also played Lori in The Deuce. And Shades from Luke Cage is playing the role of consigliere again for Sofia.

Spoiler
Yeah, I don't know why Victor was left alive except plot armor. Maybe he told his orphan backstory to Sofia, and she felt sympathy and let him go like she did with Eve Karlo. I assume Oz will end up killing him in the finale to show why the Penguin/Victor dynamic can never be akin to the Batman/Robin dynamic, and they need him alive for that moment. This episode already hammered how much Oz's life is a black mirror of Bruce's, by taking the old "two family members die during a movie night" act (and making the movie Michael Keaton's Beetlejuice just to highlight the irony) we've seen time and time again but making the kid the perpetrator.

Also heard a couple (some joking, some serious) theories that he'll become Zsasz or Mr. Freeze, or any establish DC character named "Victor", and no.

And I know, the show could add some breathing room there for Oz's gang. Feels like something that would've happened if HBO still did 12-episode seasons as opposed to 8-episode ones. What we also know is that Oz can be destructively impulsive throughout the show, since while you can justify it as him being too emotionally on edge to do anything but run, he did neglect to tell his minions to follow him when he found out about the bomb.

I've really enjoyed The Penguin so far, albeit that it's low-key kind of funny to see how super seriously they take a character with such over-the-top roots in his source material.

I do have some criticisms of the most recent episode, though, namely:

Spoiler
It seems strangely convenient that Sophia and Salvatore let Victor live. Unless there's any particular reason for it revealed in the next episode, it doesn't match how ruthless they were with other members of his crew. Maybe they could have put him up to betraying Oz, but I can't come up with any idea without it sounding incredibly convoluted.

Also, Oz's crew being loyal to him which is what gave him the upper hand over Salvatore would have felt more satisfactory and earned had the show spent a bit more time showing why he's a good boss to them. However, we've only ever seen him stab other people in the back (besides Victor), so it comes off as a little harder to buy. That said, I can rationalize that he's the only mobster who gave people from Crown Pointe the time of day (which makes up most of his current crew by the looks of it), so it does at least make more sense to back the guy who is likely to treat them better.

Decided to get this off my bucket list and watch The Deuce. Don't fully know why I didn't watch it when it was airing because it's a David Simon joint. I think it was because of how much of a creative hand James Franco had in it, I never really liked any of his directorial efforts. But yeah, fun show for 80% of its run. Cute to see Frank Sobotka's actor pretty much play Frank Sobotka again, Slim Charles as the diner owner, and Larry Gilliard Jr. on the other side of the law. And then the last few episodes are the most misery-inducing art that David Simon's ever made. Even worse than what happened to the kids in season 4 of The Wire. I was just fucking depressed watching that, but in a good way.

Now trying to look for another HBO show I should watch. Heard good things about Industry. Maybe I should watch more of Young Pope/New Pope beyond the handful of episodes I watched. Or do Enlightened since I remember Avaitor praising it.

Occasionally wondered how weird those 90s Sonic cartoons look to modern viewers since they're very early adaptations. Like showing the DiC Zelda cartoon to people who finished Tears of the Kingdom.
