I would rather play a bad collectathon platformer over another mediocre cinematic shooter, yes.
Not me. Bad collectathons are soul-sucking while mediocre cinematic shooters are merely boring.

I probably would agree if I've even played a collectathon platformer recently. There hasn't really been one in a long time.

I like Geometry Wars. Whatever happened to that one?
Life is not about the second chances. It's about a little mouse and his voyage to an exciting new land. That, my friend, is what life is.

Sir, do you have any Warrants?
I got their first CD, but you can't have it, motherfucker!

How come?

The creator of Braid is a pretentious ass who thinks that his game is the embodiment of perfection, and looks down on other games that he considers to be "less intelligent" then his own (and I'm not exaggerating here, just look up some interviews with the guy; he's clearly way too full of himself). Most of Braid's fan-base, likewise, are people who only appreciate the "artistry" of the game (and this game is NOT high art, by any means), and consider it better than almost any other platformer while completely neglecting how bland the gameplay really is (and its not even that original; the resetting time thing has been done to death before in video games).

To be honest I don't know too much about the creators of Limbo, but I do hate its fan-base, mostly for the same reasons as I hate Braid's fan-base. Honestly, Limbo is just a mediocre puzzle-platformer at best. Its only about an hour long with absolutely NO replay value. Nothing changes. There's no alternate paths or cool secrets. Its just a linear game that has a very overrated and honestly boring art design. It looks cool at first, but what would work as the gimmick for a level or two, gets really old over the course of an entire game.

Fez's creator is the biggest dick of them all. Granted that, I'm pretty sure that he purposely made a lot of outrageous comments to attract more attention to himself and thus is own game, but really his game is nothing that special, yet he acts like its a masterpiece of the genre (and so do fans). Its supposed to be reminiscent of classic 8-bit platformers with some modern twists, but it doesn't get the first thing about the classics. The music is bland, limited, and forgettable, the puzzles get old fast, and the lack of enemies is obnoxious, not artistic (like I've seen some people claim), as it just makes an already bland game even more boring by being piss-easy other than the occasional genuinely tough puzzle.

I getcha, then. I do respect games trying to push the envelope in artistry (by video game standards), as I suppose it's necessary in the medium's growth. But yeah, the creator's acting like that, and the fanbases, has got to be pretty annoying. I really can't speak for all those games cause I haven't played them, but judging from what you say here, I have a feeling games like Silent Hill 1-3 and BioShock do it better than the games those guys did, as they have genuinely great gameplay for the "artistic quality" to accommodate.

Spark Of Spirit

The problem is that they're just puzzle-platformers with a visual gimmick. Once you look past the surface you just have a decent game.

Games like Silent Hill have the gameplay and story at the same level and don't use shiny graphics to hide what it really is.

Hell yeah, Geometry Wars was the shit.

DKC3 is like the Return of the Jedi of Donkey Kong.

It's great, but not as good as the previous two, and you can see the early signs of N64 Rare appearing (in terms of aesthetics, collectables left and right, etc.).

I've always found DKC 3 better than DKC 1.

I suppose there are also some who like Jedi more than New Hope. :P

Well, it did have a cooler looking Death Star.  8)

It also has the best part of the entire trilogy. I, of course, speak of this sequence.

I'm actually not a fan of most 'Faux-retro' music. The only exceptions for me are the Mutant Mudds soundtrack and when WayForward goes retro. Mostly I prefer 'real' 8-bit like Mega Man 9 which understands that it's the simplicity that makes old school VG music so good and not the 'sounds'.

Jedi's my least favorite and I still agree with Comeau.

My point wasn't that everyone who favors DKC3 to DKC also favors Jedi to New Hope. :oo:

Am I the only one who doesn't go for 100% (or whatever their equivalent are) in the DKC games? I usually go for full completion in 2D platformers unless they involve time trials (I have never had fun with a time trial) but in these games there's usually something preventing me from wanting to. The first game has some really stupid bonus placement and the third game has the banana birds and those caves that wear out their welcome and DKCR has time trial medals which I will never go near. There's also the fact that the added bonus for full completion doesn't usually give you anything worth getting anyway, though the secret DKC2 ending is pretty cool.

I know, but I just thought I would get behind DKC3 a little more.

Recently playing through it again on my GBA was still fun.
