Spark Of Spirit

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the stories in RPGs these days in their attempts to be deeper than they are. The best RPG stories have always been simple adventure stories with good against evil as the main plot and that's it.

Stuff like Final Fantasy XIII is just... why.

It's like if your game is packed with "edgy" and dark content, takes itself completely seriously, and includes "positive" portrayal of minorities, then consumers and critics alike will eat it up.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - Not my cup of tea

Then it turns out that you have a shitty taste in tea. :>
:D And MGS3 and Rayman Origins advanced and Outrun 2 died a horrible death. How 'bout them apples Spark.

I'm just going to chime in that River City Ransom is an excellent beat em up that deserves a sequel more than about any other NES era game.

Shenmue, Ykuza, Castle Crashers, The Warriors, Scott Pilgrim, Double Dragon Neon, and many other similar games really owe a lot to it.
Which The Warriors?

River City Ransom - Still need to beat the last boss and play the non-GBA version
Revengeance
Pokemon
Mario

NG
Garou
RE4
Star Wars -Because Sweet Home and Phantasy Star IV are better RPGs

I think that description goes beyond RPGs. Makes me feel bad for our medium.

Foggle

Metal Gear Rising - Fantastic game, maybe the best this year so far
River City Ransom - Dated, but still great fun
Pokemon - Yep
Mario 3D Land - Probably the only Nintendo-made Mario game I don't find fun

Resident Evil 4 - Literally perfect
KOTOR - I don't like the combat system, but I love everything else
Ninja Gaiden - Great platformer
Garou - It's probably good, but you know my bias against and inadequacy at fighters :P

Dr. Ensatsu-ken

I love KOTOR's combat system. It's so dynamic in how you can choose to fight. You can either pause the action and strategize the attacks of each of your party members, or you can choose to do things on the fly, and delegate the attacks of your party members to the AI based on priority, while you yourself can focus more carefully on your attacks. I prefer it to the standard type of turn-based combat that I've seen in a lot of older RPGs that are more popular, personally.

For what it's worth, I actually do want to try Sweet Home one of these days. It may be one of the few JRPG's that's actually up my alley. From what I here it's fairly short (by JRPG standards) and doesn't really require you to grind or level up all that much. I think the only major gimmick to watch out for is that once one of your party members die, they stay dead for the rest of the game.

Metal Gear Rising
Pokemon Black and White
Super Mario 3D Land
River City Ransom

Resident Evil 4

River City Ransom- 13
Pokemon Black/White- 11
Super Mario 3D Land- 9
Metal Gear Rising Revengeance- 17

Ninja Gaiden (NES)- 11
Resident Evil 4- 16
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic- 12
Garou: Mark of the Wolves- 11

River City Ransom, Metal Gear Rising Revengeance, Resident Evil 4, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic all move onto the next round. Ha! Nice try Desensitized and GSF, but you just can't keep one of the best RPGs ever down like that. :bleh:

Round 1:

Match 23:

Kirby And The Amazing Mirror

vs.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

vs.

Xenoblade: Chronicles

vs.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

Match 24:

Power Stone 2

vs.

Halo: Combat Evolved/Anniversary

vs.

Darksiders

vs.

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2

My Picks:

Match 23:
Pass

Match 24:
Power Stone 2 (An underrated gem of a brawler)
Halo: Combat Evolved/Anniversary (Easily one of the best modern FPS there is to date)
Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2 (I had fun with it as a kid, at least; though, it's a bit too shallow for me these days)
Darksiders (For what it's worth, I'm still interested in playing the sequel, but I found this game to be really underwhelming)

Foggle

Only played three games total from both matches. Gonna' pass on both.

VLordGTZ

Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (My favorite Zelda game)
Xenoblade Chronicles
Kirby and the Amazing Mirror
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

Halo: Combat Evolved/Anniversary
Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2
Darksiders
Power Stone 2 (Haven't played it)

talonmalon333

1. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (You guys want to talk good RPG combat systems?)
2. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
3. Kirby and the Amazing Mirror
4. Xenoblade Chronicles

Passing on the other match.

[/quote]It's actually hard to die from combat and believe it or not, it's a NES game where you can save anywhere so basically the characters only stay dead if you let them die. The real challenge is solving the Resident Evil style puzzles (Sweet Home is actually a game that influenced RE. Both by Capcom) Also, screw what anyone says, SH is the greatest NES RPG. Mother 1 wishes it was that good.

Match 24: Same as ensatsu-ken

Kirby And The Amazing Mirror- 4
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess- 7
Xenoblade: Chronicles- 4
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door- 5

Power Stone 2- 9
Halo: Combat Evolved/Anniversary- 10
Darksiders- 4
Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2- 7

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Power Stone 2, and Halo: Combat Evolved/Anniversary all move onto the next round.

Round 1:

Match 25:

Pikmin 3

vs.

Super Smash Bros. Melee

vs.

Jak and Daxter

vs.

Contra 4

Match 26:

Mega Man 9

vs.

Half-Life

vs.

Gunstar Heroes

vs.

Goldeneye 007

My Picks:

Match 25:
Pass

Match 26:
Half-Life (I still need to finish this game someday, but what I played of it was excellent)
Mega Man 9 (A great modern 2D action platformer, but I prefer the style of the X games, myself)
Gunstar Heroes (I only played the demo for it, but it's really fun)
Goldeneye 007 (A fun N64 shooter for what it is, but it was never one of my favorites)
