Last time I listen to any of the words that come out of talonmalon's mouth. :srs:

Because I understood something you guys didn't? Go ahead, live in foolishness. :sly:

Seriously, though, overall, MGS4's story just doesn't add up. It's like a bunch of puzzle pieces that don't form a picture in the end. I'll defend the character drama but I can't call the overall thing a good story.

gunswordfist

I can't say what I'd call the story. I only watch the ending via half-paying attention on Twitch and I haven't played the game in like 7 years.

And yet you still praise it as one of the best games ever? Go ahead, live in foolishness. :sly:

To be honest, I think the story is just a mess. A different kind than MGS2, but a mess nonetheless. I almost think the reason MGS3's story worked so well was because it was a prequel, thus it took place before the madness.

Of course, MGS3 also had the benefit of one of the greatest video game endings ever.

gunswordfist

I played MGS3 soon before I beat MGS4 so I already know which game is the better out of the two. :sly:

I just remember how drawn out the cutscenes were.

Something I find funny in MGS4 is that you can hear that, in its main theme, they are trying to capture the spirit of the original series' main theme (particularly the rendition in MGS3). They claim they dropped that theme because of its similarities to a Russian piece, but really, what they ended up doing was trying to retain as much of the theme as they could, while at the same time making it sound different enough from the Russian composition to avoid legal issues. Basically, they wanted to make the theme without making it.

I do understand their issues. But I wouldn't be surprised if they wouldn't have gotten into any trouble if they continued using it. And I can only imagine how much more effective it would have been if the final boss had the original theme instead of 4's.

These are the Metal Gear tracks I speak of...

I remember the second Spider-Man game for PS1 had to be recalled after 9/11 because the final boss was fought on top of the World Trade Center.

I don't know anything about that, but I do remember this:

Notice something in Spider-Man's eye? Needless to say, this posted was banned.

Even bigger is this special shoot trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Txwq7FGtBw

QuoteI agree. But since that only amounts to 5% of the whole game, I just can't put MGS2 above MGS1.
Hmm... I'd say more like 15-20%... and 50% of the total gameplay.

I only just noticed this. :P

Are you referring to how much the Big Shell just feels like padding?

Foggle

Big Shell has some great moments, but the excellent stealth is bogged down by horrible boss fights, swimming, and sniping. The bulk of the traditional Metal Gear gameplay is in the Tanker portion.

gunswordfist

Ugh, swimming...Why does that suck so much in 3D? Also, why am I the only one that didn't mind the boss fight or sniping?

Foggle

Swimming isn't always bad in 3D, but very few games have done it well.

I liked the RAYs and Olga fights, and - to a lesser extent - the Vamp one, but Fatman and Solidus were so awful. I generally like sniping in Metal Gear, but the escort mission is just no fun IMO.

Dr. Ensatsu-ken

But Fatman was hilarious....

Foggle

His fight was so bad, though - on the PS3, at least. The timed pressure-sensitive bomb defusing is tedious as hell and always makes me think I'm going to break my square button.

talonmalon333

If the whole game was similar to the Tanker portion, MGS2 could have been great.

By Solidus, do you mean the final fight? I disliked that one, too (I also disliked the earlier fight when he was in the ship). For some reason, Kojima liked to end his games with gimmick final bosses. MG2 was great, but MGS1's car fight with Liquid was just as bad as the sword fight with Solidus.

MGS3's final boss was awesome for so many reasons, but one of which was that it allows you to utilize every ability you have to fight in various ways. MGS4's was slightly gimmicky, but it still worked very well.
