Just trying new stuff with each episode, while interesting, doesn't automatically make a show great, for me at least. I liked some episodes of SD, and the animation and music was nice, but more often than not the execution felt more clumsy than deliberate to me. A big issue that I had, though, is that I could never really become invested in any of the characters. That's really important to me, even in a series as episodic as this and which doesn't take itself that seriously.

Personally, my ideal animated show which encapsulates what I love about animation would be something that can really make me feel whatever kinds of emotions that it's trying to get across, such as humor or sadness or delight. Space Dandy was kind of hit or miss with the comedy, but my bigger issue is that I personally felt nothing when it was trying to get across some of its more dramatic moments like in episode 5 and other parts of the series. Futurama (at least the original FOX run) would be a closer example of a series that both got me to laugh but which I could also find to be genuinely heartwarming or depressing at times, just for the sake of reference.

Foggle: Well, OK, I certainly don't hate any Watanabe show, and I did like some aspects of SD, so I suppose that I don't agree with Dalek after all.

That said, TiR is still more up my alley, and I do personally feel that the second half was superior to the first half, but I also need to give the full series a re-watch, one of these days.

This is actually how I felt about Space Dandy, but I would understand if its humor, pathos, etc. didn't work for most people.

I can certainly understand and respect that it managed to do that for you and Shadow and CX.

For me that Watanabe series was KotS. You could argue that it's a more boring choice thsn SD, but it really resonated with me, personally, though I can't properly explain why.

I actually really like KotS for the same reason, I just never got to finish it. I will, soon.

1. Space Dandy
2. Cowboy Bebop
3. Kids on the Slope
4. Samurai Champloo
5. Terror in Resonance

While I did enjoy SD the first time around, I wasn't really in love with it.  After going to through the series again, I now have greater appreciation for the show.  It has definitely become one of my favorite anime.

Already changing your mind on your favorite so quickly, CX? :sly:
