Quote from: Spark Of Spirit on October 06, 2014, 03:46:37 PMIf we're talking 3D, there's some excellent stuff. I just didn't like how lopsided the gen was. And before you mention I'm lacking NGB and Devil May Cry, they were on there until I remembered a few other games. It was hard pairing them down to 20.

The 16-bit generation will probably always be my favorite, but I can't deny there's been a lot of great stuff since.

I actually always assumed that you just never played that much of NGB since you said that the 3D games are too hard to get into (and you never really talked about any of it, before that). :D

To be fair, I can't blame you, either way. The game is punishing at first and has a learning curve, but I've always found it to be the perfect balance between simple design and nuanced gameplay mechanics, myself, which is probably why it resonated so well with me from the get-go.

Well, the way that I see it, 4th gen was indisputably the best for 2D games, and the 6th gen basically did the same for 3D games. To me they are both qualified to be the best for what they excel at, so it all comes down to which kinds of games that you prefer. Your 4th gen list does make me realize how many gems I need to go back and play, though. Actually, the same applies to you 5th gen list as well. I actually remember playing Tomba!, but it was so long ago. I also need to experience more games from your 3rd gen list.
I played NGB and like it a lot, it just demolished me and was hard for me to wrap my head around. When it comes to 3D third person combat in games, I tend to go stupid in the middle of intense situations. That said, it was a really tight game. Devil May Cry was the same as was Ninja Gaiden II. They're good games, but not my cup of tea, so I don't come back to them nearly as much as I do for platformers or 3D adventure games.

I find the PS2 generation is a lot like the NES generation is to 2D games. So many years later and you're liable to find a good gem in the mix. Last year I played Freedom Fighters for the first time, for instance, and it beats most of the shooters I played last gen. Same with finding the hidden gems on the NES like Gimmick!, Metal Storm, Gremlins 2, or Little Samson. Looking back, they're better than I gave them credit for, for sure.

Yeah, I'm still discovering a ton of hidden gems from both the SNES and PS2 generations to this day, and I still have a ton of stuff to play from the NES generation that I just haven't gotten around to yet.

Speedy

Last page asked favorite games from last generation.  Well, I didn't play as many as some gamers, but for me, here are some that stand out:
-New Super Mario Bros. Wii (and, by extension, NSMB 2)
-Donkey Kong Country Returns
-Rayman Origins
-Mortal Kombat 9
-Sonic Generations
-Street Fighter IV (only downside, besides Seth's cheapness, is that Capcom kept milking the game to death, even really recently with Ultra)
-Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2
-Mario Kart Wii
-Little Big Planet 1 & 2 (no, they're not the hardest games, but they're great eye candy)

Downloadable titles gets into a whole 'nother category (Mega Man 9?).

Spark Of Spirit

Mega Man 9 was excellent. One of my favorite games.

I'm thinking about getting MK9 since it is on sale for 5.99 today.

Speedy, do you mean Super Street Fighter IV or just Street Fighter IV? I used to be able to beat Seth on Very Hard by throwing nothing but special attacks in SF IV but then again maybe I am an anomaly and I did have to get used to his patterns before it got that easy for me. As for Super, yep, he's hard as hell.

Sixth generation is the best of all time IMO. I can name more amazing games on the PS2 alone than I can for other gens across all consoles. And that's not even getting into the awesome exclusives for GC, Xbox, DC, GBA, and PC...
The 6th is my 2nd favorite. SNES/Genesis will always be number 1 for me but with how many good GBA games I've been play, the 6th is now too far behind IMO.

The GBA is my favorite portable system. So many great games, so little attention. It's like a return to the 16-bit generation.

I was thinking the same over the last few weeks - like another SNES generation. You have devs from the past take what worked from that gen and apply new/newer features to the formula, like I just said about Circle of the Moon, plus other games like Mother 3, Mega Man Zero, etc. etc. It's wonderful.

This VC trailer for DKC2 is a good reminder of why the game is so great.

In other news, I decided to make a top 20 list for the GBA excluding ports. (Otherwise this would go on much longer)

I've been thinking, i need to beat mega man games without using auto-fire. i abused them in all the games i've beaten. hmmm, probably why i can't beat 7 and 9.

Good man!

Although, admittedly I'm a bit surprised. I was sure that you'd list a Sonic game for some reason.

QuoteHack'n Slash - DMC 3

Easily my 2nd favorite in the genre, even though I got burned out by playing DMD mode.

I honestly feel like one of the few people who prefers this game to Bayonetta. And don't get me wrong, I love Bayonetta. It's my 3rd favorite game in the genre, and I'd say that it's a "better" game than this game and NGB, but I still just "prefer" those games and the specific ways that they each play to Bayonetta's style, if that makes any sense.
